ANDAMAN ISLANDS, INDIAN OCEAN]. [Two Original Watercolours of the Andaman Islands, Titled on Verso]: 1) Ross Islands from the Aberdeen District Officers' House, Port Blair; and 2) Government Rest House, Mount Harriet - Port Blair.

1890 - Ca. 1890s. Two watercolours on paper, each ca. 14x22,5 cm (5 ½ x 8 ¾ in). Period manuscript captions in pencil on verso. Later matting. A very good pair. Interesting original watercolour views of Port Blair, the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands (India) and the centre of the infamous penal colony during the British rule. Apart from an unsuccessful attempt to establish a colony on the islands in 1789, Britain hadn't risen territorial claims to the Andamans until the 1850s. In 1858 a British penal colony was set up for dissenters and independence fighters from the Indian subcontinent. Since 1972 the Andaman and Nicobar islands were administered by a chief commissioner at Port Blair. The infamous Cellular Jail was constructed in Point Blair in 1896-1906. Drawn in the midst of the colonial period, the watercolours present interesting views of the Andaman Islands, including "Government Rest House" - summer headquarters of the British administration located on a beautiful Mount Harriet, the third highest peak of the islands. Another watercolour is taken from the Aberdeen District Officers' House and has a great view of the Ross Island where the British administrative headquarters were settled. The artist, Sir Hastings Hadley D'Oyly, 11th Baronet of Shottisham (succeeded in 1921) lived and served in the British India. He gained the rank of Captain in the service of the Bihar Light Horse and later served as a deputy commissioner of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

        Oeuvres Choisies de Massillon

Paris - Garnier Freres, 1890. Paris - Garnier Freres, 1890 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Leatherbound volume with marble paper covered boards and marble paper pastedowns. Jean Baptiste Massillon (June 24, 1663 - September 28, 1742) was a French Catholic bishop and famous preacher, Bishop of Clermont from 1717 until his death. His popularity was probably because in his sermons he lays little stress on dogmatic questions, but treats generally of moral subjects, in which the secrets of the human heart and the processes of man's reason are described with poetical feeling. He has usually been contrasted with his predecessor Bourdaloue, the latter having the credit of vigorous denunciation, Massillon that of gentle persuasiveness. Besides the Petit Carme, a sermon which he delivered before the young king Louis XV in 1718, his sermons on the Prodigal Son, on the small number of the elect, on death, for Christmas Day, and for the Fourth Sunday in Advent, may be perhaps cited as his masterpieces. His funeral oration on King Louis XIV is only noted now for the opening sentence: Dieu seul est grand. But in truth Massillon is singularly free from inequality. His great literary power, his reputation for benevolence, and his known toleration and dislike of doctrinal disputes caused him to be much more favourably regarded than most churchmen by the philosophes of the 18th century. This volume is in French. Condition: The binding is tight and firm with both covers and all pages securely attached. There is some wear to the extremities including fading to the spine and rubbing to the boards. Internally the pages are slightly age-toned with the occasional handling mark and odd spot. Overall the volume is in good only condition..

        The Tragic Muse

London: Macmillan and Co., 1890. London: Macmillan and Co., 1890 First English edition. Three volumes. One of 500 copies. Publisher's dark blue cloth, lettered in gilt, black coated endpapers. About near fine, with some light wear to the extremities, bright gilt, former owner's inscription to the front pastedowns, scattered spotting, otherwise bright and fresh pages, upper covers have evidence of bookplate removal, spines slightly starting at front hinge of Volume I, otherwise sturdy and intact spines. Overall, bright and attractive, in unsophisticated original cloth. Edel & Laurence A34b. Originally published serially in seventeen installments in the Atlantic Monthly from January 1889-May 1890, The Tragic Muse was Henry James' longest novel to date. The plot tells of two aspiring artists, painter Nick Dormer and actress Miriam Rooth, who endeavor to find both artistic and commercial success. The large cast of characters that encounter Nick and Miriam throughout the text comprise a panoramic view of nineteenth century English society. James originally offered The Tragic Muse to Macmillan, but was dissatisfied with their offers. Accordingly, the first edition of this text was published on June 7, 1890, by Houghton, Mifflin, and Co., and was followed by this first English edition on June 28th of the same year. Notorious for heavily editing his serialized stories before book publication, James naturally made many revisions to The Tragic Muse, and his dual publication lead to slightly different revisions in the American and English editions. Notably, the use of punctuation, specifically commas, varies significantly in the Atlantic Monthly, Houghton, and Macmillan editions, with the heaviest use in the Atlantic Monthly and lightest in Macmillan. As James was known for using commas sparingly, this first English edition most closely mirrors the author's natural writing style.. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine.

According to the introductory Apologia by the author, "These vignettes of travel are painfully extracted from some letters sent to one who always loves me behind my back (my sister), and to an invalid friend who has since then solved the great mystery." Bottom of title page reads: "New York - In the years before the Grasshopper became a burden" - a reference to Ecclesiastes 12:3-5 and the onset of old age. Contents includes short dramatical vignettes and essays on travels in India, Japan, China, Florence, Napoli, Sicily, Columbo and various other locations in Europe and Asia. Although there is a slight colonial tone in places, the writing is vivid and evocative. Unpaginated, 28cm. Subjects: Asia -- Europe -- India -- Japan -- China -- Sri Lanka -- Italy -- Description and travel -- 19th century -- 20th century.

        The Vicar of Wakefield

London - The Walter Scott Publishing Co., 1890. London - The Walter Scott Publishing Co., 1890 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A smart copy of Oliver Goldsmith's classic novel, The Vicar of Wakefield. In literary history books the Vicar of Wakefield is often described as a sentimental novel, which displays the belief in the innate goodness of human beings. But it can also be read as a satire on the sentimental novel and its values, as the vicar's values are apparently not compatible with the real sinful world. It is only with Sir William Thornhill's help that he can get out of his calamities. With prize bookplate to front pastedown. Condition: In an armorial prize calf binding. Externally smart, though with some light rubbing. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are mainly bright and clean, save for some spotting to the first and last few pages. Overall:VERY GOOD INDEED..
