Black Forest Photo Album with An Unusual Relief Depicting Putti, One Blowing Bubbles, the Other, Playing Cymbals

Berner Oberland, Switzerland - N.d., circa 1890. The front board is quite elaborate, with a beveled perimeter of a richly painted wood grain. Within is an oblong piece of walnut in the quintessential Black Forest, or in actuality, Swiss Brienzerware, style. By this is meant the delicate foliate relief vignettes which rest on lightly pitted wood. But this frames a light walnut oblong oval with the putti relief that bespeaks more eighteenth century rococo than standard Brienzerware, except that the stones and vegetation at the base are consistent with Brienzerware. The rear board of the album has a pyrographic bouquet such as was practiced by the Swiss carvers later in the nineteenth century. The album, now empty of photos, has 25 thick card leaves, and it is kept closed with a brass clasp. The spine is of brown morocco.

        Eigenh. Brief mit U. ("B. v. Suttner").

Harmannsdorf bei Eggenburg, 7. XI. 1890.. 2½ SS. auf Doppelblatt. Gr.-8vo..

Firenze Queen of the Turf 1890 by Glenelg dam Florida. Owned by J.B. Haggin Esq

Boussod Valadon & Co, successors to Goupil & Co, New York, Paris, London and The Hague 1890 - A fine hand-coloured portrait of a filly whose prize money totalled $112,471 between 1886 and 1891. She won 47 of her 82 starts during this period. "Firenze was a small filly bred by Dan Swigert in 1884. She was sired by Glenelg out of the mare Florida, by Virgil. James Ben Ali Haggin purchased Firenze for $2,600. Small in stature, she grew to only 15 hands, but her racing presence was large. At 3 Firenze won all the major stakes for fillies and at 4, 5, and 6 she was named Champion Handicap Female. As champion filly or mare for four consecutive years, Firenze raced against colts 69 times and beat them regularly over all distances. She beat the mighty Hanover at 1 1/4, 1 1/2, and 1 3/4 miles; beat Kingston twice, and gave The Bard his only defeat of 1888. Rider, trainer, racing official, and Hall of Fame member James McLaughlin knew such great fillies as Miss Woodford, Imp, Beldame, Artful, Pan Zareta, and Regret, but claimed that Firenze was the best of all." (National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame). Photogravure, coloured by hand, by Goupil & Co., after Stull.

The new census of the United States—the electrical enumerating mechanism

1890. [Hollerith Machine.] The new census of the United States—the electrical enumerating mechanism. Wood-engraved illustration. In Scientific American 63, no. 9 (August 30, 1890): 122 [front wrapper]. Whole number. [122]-142pp. 395 x 277 mm. Original self-wrappers. Stab-holes in gutter margin (not affecting image), small marginal tear in one leaf mended with tape, but very good. First Edition of this large and remarkable early illustration of the Hollerith punched-card tabulator, which adorns the front wrapper of the August 30, 1890 issue of the Scientific American (the accompanying article, titled “The census of the United States,” is on p. 132). The image shows male and female workers using card-punch machines, tabulators and counting machines, while a group of clerks manually sorts and ties the printed data sheets. The punched-card tabulator and its accessories, which reigned as the primary large-scale data-processing system until the advent of the electronic digital computer, was invented in the 1880s by Herman Hollerith, a onetime clerk at the United States Census Bureau. Acting on a suggestion by John Shaw Billings, the Bureau’s head of vital statistics, Hollerith perfected a system that used punched cards for recording statistical data; the cards were read by electrical sensors and the results tabulated by machine. In 1890 the Census Bureau contracted with Hollerith to use his tabulator in the 1890 census, an event that has been described as “a milestone in the history of modern data processing” (Cortada, Before the Computer: IBM, NCR, Burroughs, and Remington Rand and the Industry they Created, 1865–1956, p. 48). Hollerith’s machines, which could tabulate data for as many as fifteen thousand people a day, cut the time needed to complete the census by nearly eighty percent over manual methods; they also enabled the Census Bureau to process a larger variety of data than ever before. The age of mechanized data handling had begun. In December 1896 Hollerith incorporated his business under the name of the Tabulating Machine Company, manufacturing and leasing his tabulators to government agencies and, increasingly, to commercial users such as banks, insurance companies and department stores. Hollerith sold his company in 1911 to industrialist Charles R. Flint, who merged it with several other manufacturing companies to form C-T-R (the initials stood for Computing, Tabulating and Recording). In 1915 Thomas J. Watson became president of C-T-R; nine years later Watson changed the name of the company to International Business Machines (IBM).

        ALBUM DE BOTANIQUE.

N.P., (France) 1890 - The album paper is embossed, "Secail Fils" "Paris". A lovely and elegant album of embossed oblong sheets, highlighted in gold, and featuring original painted illustrations, designed as an exercise in instruction or self- instruction in botany. Although we only have initials to go by, this has quite a feminine feel to it and was probably a young girl's student work, such as was often produced in 19th century France. Each leaf is framed with decorative embossing, partially gilt on verso and recto. The versos contain ink manuscript text instructing in botany - the first page begins with the title, " Notions de Botanique" and includes the sub-heading, " Organes de nutrition: racine - tige - feuilles." The pages opposite, recto, contain original drawings with inked captions for the lessons opposite. From cellular tissue and basic root, we move on to various types of roots, such as Racine Bulbeuse. Various types of stem are described and illustrated in color. Then leaves, flowers, and various classifications of vegetation from truffles to lichen and ferns. The study concludes with text and illustrations of fruits and seeds. The original colored drawings are petite and range from 9 to 22 per page. Both the handwriting and the little drawings are done with grace and great care. Oblong album (23.5 x 34 cm.); 14 ff. with gilt title, all leaves with gilt and blind embossed borders; with 209 small hand-colored botanical illustrations on 13 rectos and penned manuscript description on versos. Original leather backed pebbled cloth album with the decorative intials , M.P. embossed on upper cover; covers scuffed, soiled and faded; some evidence of old damping on covers NOT affecting interior; original moire endsheets; manuscript in ink on versos, watercolor or gouache illustrations with penned captions on rectos; with original blue cloth ribbon marker; album leaves very clean, with just some dusting at edges.

        Fete Foraine

Paris: A. Capendu. Wraps. Very Good. Scarce juvenile title celebrating French carnival. N.d., circa 1890.Small folio-sized, 31 by 25 cm. 16 pp., including wraps. Vivid chromolithographs, whose artful juxtapositions aid in transporting us back to the nineteenth century carnival and to see the kinetic energy and color of such occasions through a child's eyes. Here is the wonderment without the grime and sordidness that was surely the underside of peripatetic productions. The illustrations bring to life "les Animaux Savants", the wild animals, the organ grinder, the souvenir vendors, Punch and Judy, the minstrel band, the jugglers, the balancing acts, Indianqs, the monkeys, balloons, and then such innocent fun as cycling. No copies located on OCLC. Light soling scattered.Minor roughness by the spine.

Privately assembled album of natural history drawings and lithographs from the library of the natural historian Francis Day

Kenilworth House, Cheltenham: circa, 1890. Quarto, a privately assembled album of 123 engraved and lithographic plates of which 23 are skilfully hand-coloured, front pastedown endpaper with label of the Day family bequest to the Cheltenham Public Library; a very good copy indeed in later nineteenth-century half calf, expertly rebacked. Private album of Francis Day. A remarkable volume of 123 natural history illustrations, many unpublished, from the personal collection of the ichthyologist Francis Day (1829-1889) with his working notes on many of the images. Most of the images are proofs before letters, and in the absence of descriptive text it would require a good deal of further research and specialist knowledge to accurately identify all of the species; however, given Day's interest in the subcontinent and the Indian Ocean, no doubt many are from the region. Several of the ornithological proofs are signed by the accomplished engraver Charlotte Gray (daughter of the respected conchologist Maria Emma Gray and step-daughter of prolific naturalist John Edward Gray, the zoological keeper at the British Museum who worked with Charles Darwin and many others). The album reflects the wide interests of Day, appointed as Inspector-General of Fisheries in India and Burma in the mid-Victorian era, who was widely respected as for his knowledge of the natural history of the subcontinent. The album includes mammals, quadrupeds both familiar and exotic, birds, fish, insects, crabs, arachnids and insects. Of special interest are highly detailed lithographs detailing the highly unusual nests built by tropical birds. Significantly, a good number of the plates in the collection are by the eminent London based natural history publisher Treuttel, Wurtz and Company. Some of the plates are published as early as 1822, but Day evidently used them as the basis for his own observations, with frequent annotations in his hand regarding habitat and differences between specimens, making this an interesting working archive. The plates include five magnificent lithographs of Australian birds, some of which are beautifully hand-coloured. The Australian ornithology plates comprise a magnificent raptor (here captioned the 'Australian Fishing Eagle') followed by three magnificent hand-coloured lithographs illustrating an Australian owl, a frogmouth and a brush-turkey. Also hand-coloured in warm coppery tones is the unfortunately named Troglodyte Beach Rail, a native waterbird of New Zealand. In this collection both the brush-turkey and Troglodyte Beach Rail are included in duplicate (as coloured and uncoloured plates). The Australian lithographs were produced for the Transactions of the Linnean Society, but some are certainly Day's own proofs of the published images (were these plates in fact ever published?). A ticket on the front paste-down notes that this album was presented to the then Cheltenham Public Library by the "Misses Day, as a memorial of their late father". A full listing of the contents of the album is available upon request.

Heberle, 12.03.1894. Vergleichsliteratur: C. Bantzer: Hessen in der deutschen Malerei. Hrsg. Von A. Baeumerth.
