Zum Zeitvertreib fur brave Knaben & Madschen Ein Ziehbilderbuch

Verlag Braun & Schneider, Munich 1890 - Unpaginaged. 33 x 25 cm. Cover title, a pop-up book with eight full-page chromolithographed plates, each with a movable tab to set the scene in motion. The poems describing each plate are captioned: Die Gouvernante, Der Billardspieler, Der Schmetterlingsfanger, Der Gratulant, Der vergessene Hausshlussel Der durstige Kasperl, Der genfangene Turko, and Der Apfeldieb. "There is little doubt that the most elaborate and ingenious movables ever produced were those of the German Lothar Meggendorfer (1847-1925) made during the 1880s and 1890s.the mechanisms and operations of Meggedorfer's books - not to mention the originality of the figures -- are far superior to any others published before or since. The devices that operated the various figures in his books consisted of a series of inter-connecting cardboard levers sandwiched between the coloured illustration on the front of the oblong leaf and the dummy pasted behind it. The animated limbs and heads were cut-out models on the front of the picture, and moving the tab set the whole scene in motion [see: HAINING, Movable Books, pp.65-73]. Overall a clean copy with all tabs functional. Orig. publisher's pictorial boards colored in red, black and blue with cloth backstrip renewed. Very good. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Cabinet Portrait Gallery Reproduced from Original Photographs by W.&D. Downey

Cassell and Company 1890-1892, 1894, London - Hardcover. Four volumes of a five volume series. This set is missing Volume 3. Nonetheless, the remaining volumes hold a fascinating array of photographs of many of the luminaries of the time. Each volume contains 36 black and white portraits accompanied by a brief, adulatory biographical piece. Subjects are drawn from many spheres of British society and culture, with an emphasis on royalty, the aristocracy, the stage, and the arts. Among those included are Oscar Wilde, the Prince of Wales, Thomas Hardy, Sarah Bernhardt, Frederic Leighton, G. Bernard Shaw, and Czar Nicholas II. These are ex-library volumes with the bookplate of the City of York Public Library affixed to each volumes front pastedown. In what was probably an effort to discourage readers from taking photographs, the library applied an unobtrusive but visible embossed stamp to the margins of the photos, not affecting the portrait itself. Despite these factors the photographs are still interesting and attractive. Bound in brown cloth with floral borders to front boards and titles in gilt to front and to spines. Some bumping and rubbing, remains of small white stickers at spine bottoms, but otherwise in quite good condition. Some hinges are loose but holding. Save for the small embossed stamps, the photographs are in very good condition. Each volume is 95-96 pages. PHOTO/092608. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Autograph manuscript notebook of field experiments, 1890-91, 1891-92, and 1892-93. 130 leaves.

1890-93 1890 - Raulin, Jules (1836-96). Champ d’expériences. Manuscript notebook. [130]pp., with diagrams and charts. N.p., 1890-93. 214 x 172 mm. Original embossed boards, cloth backstrip, some wear at spine and edges, a few leaves loose. Minor fraying at edges but very good. Scientific notebook written by plant physiologist Jules Raulin, who studied under Pasteur at the École Normale Supérieur and served as Pasteur’s first laboratory assistant at the school. Raulin collaborated with Pasteur on the latter’s investigations of fermentation, oxidation and silkworm disease; he also pursued his own research on the chemical role of minerals in plant nutrition, which led to important advances in agriculture. In 1876 Raulin was appointed professor of chemistry at the Faculté des Sciences in Lyon, and in 1883 he founded the École de Chimie Industrielle (School of Industrial Chemistry), where he spent most of his research time on agronomy and silk production. He was the first to identify the role of zinc in plant nutrition, and his experimental studies of the mold species Aspergillus niger led to the development of the nutritive medium known as Raulin's fluid. The present notebook contains extensive notes and diagrams detailing Raulin’s agricultural researches in the early 1890s, including information on soil chemistry, fertilizers, pest control, etc. At the end of the notebook are several pages devoted to silkworm culture.         The Great East River Suspension Bridge

New York: Currier & Ives, 1890. A MARVELOUS BIRD'S EYE VIEW OF NEW YORK FEATURING THE BROOKLYN BRIDGE Frame size: 381/2" x 34" | Window size: 211/2" x 26" No city surpassed New York as a symbol of growth and optimism. The city's rapid rise towards becoming an international power was, to many, capped by the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge, which linked Manhattan with the borough of Brooklyn, from which many made the long ferry commute every working day. The bridge meant that life could move faster, increasing productivity and success. In many ways, the utilitarian function of the bridge signaled what would make New York the preeminent world power: efficiency, ingenuity and progressive thinking. . Book.

(vlg. dazu Brockhaus, 19. Aufl. XIII, 509).

Finely bound by The Chelsea Bindery in red morocco, gilt titles and decoration to spine, raised bands, single gilt fillet rule to boards, twin rule to dentelles, dark green endpapers, gilt edges. Very occasional spot to text leaves, an excellent copy in fine binding. With frontispiece by Charles Kerr. First edition. This copy has both internal issue points, "138" on the contents page is incomplete and appears as "13" and "wishes" is misspelt on p.56 as "w shed". However, these issue points are present in both the first and second issue of the first edition, the only way of determining between the two issues is by the binding. The second issue was reissued by Griffith Farran and Company, with the original title page. The covers are also the same except for the imprint at the foot of the spine which reads "Griffith Farran and Cos/ Standard/ Library". As this copy has been rebound it is not possible to distinguish whether it is a first or second issue of the first edition. This copy is bound without the publishers' catalogue found in some first edition copies. [Attributes: First Edition]

Southern California and the Santa Fe Route.

May 1890 - Oblong 8vo., (3 4/8 x 5 4/8 inches). 17 fine pen and ink sketches, and one watercolour drawing of striking views in and around California and the Santa Fe trail through Arizona and New Mexico, each captioned and dated by the artist. Original maroon paper boards heavily embossed in gilt, inscribed by Brownell on the front free endpaper (a bit worn at the extremities). Brownell a landscape and still-life artist born in Providence, Rhode Island "sketched and painted some of the most distinctive scenery of any American artist, he had a natural scientist's curiosity for the minute details of nature, and made voluminous sketches in both pencil and watercolor of specific nature studies as well as more complete landscape compositions. He kept meticulously detailed notes of his surroundings, both as inscriptions on individual sketches as well as in a series of picture diaries [as here]. Brownell's pictures broadly follow the style of the Hudson River School; he painted many oils and watercolours of the same New England views popular with other landscape artists of the time, as well as subjects drawn from the vicinities of his family's properties in Connecticut and Rhode Island. Brownell's most significant contribution to American landscape painting, however is his body of landscapes of the island of Cuba, which he first visited in 1853. Free from financial worries, Brownell traveled extensively throughout his life, and seems never to have stopped sketching. In all his works, there is a strong sense of place, of a particular location sensitively recorded at a specific moment in time. Brownell's sketches are souvenirs of the many places he visited. They were intended as such; each is annotated careful in clear script, with date and location generally recorded along with vantage point, common and botanical names of plants, and other relevant information. Brownell kept these sketches to remind himself of precisely what he saw at various times and places as, in effect, a visual diary that could rekindle his memory. Bound by the artist into books, these sketches were kept in his possession until his death" (Zachary D. Ross "Charles de Wolf Brownell: A Decade of Travel, 1856-66" pages 5-6). The sketches in this album are: San Diego, Cal. From Florence Heights May 4.1890; Meru - Old Spanish Mission - near San Juan, Cal. May 9.1890; Santa Ana May 9. 1890; View North, from near San Borodino May 9. 1890; Mojave Desert May 9. 1890; Mojave May 9.1890; Mojave Indians at the Needles - on the Colorado River May 10.1890; At the Needles - course of the Colorado River May 10.1890; Dum Palms - Arizona. Indian huts May 10.1890; Across the Colorado River: the old bridge - the Needles May 10-1890; New Bridge, over the Colorado River - at the Needles- May 10.1890; Doum Palms - Arizona May 10.1890; Arizona May 10. 1890; Arizona - or New Mexico May 10.1890; Arizona or New Mexico May 11.1890; Arizona or New Mexico May 11.1890; New Mexico May ii.1890; New Mexico Mayy.1890 (watercolour).         Two Years Ago &

London - Macmillan and Co., 1890 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A late nineteenth century edition of two of Charles Kingsley's novels, attractively bound together in leather with gilt lettering, decoration, and spine label. Yeast: Fourth Edition. Bears the insignia of the School of St John the Divine on the front board. Charles Kingsley (18191875) was a novelist, Church of England clergyman, and controversialist. In 1848, despite his interest in the problems of urban workers, Kingsley turned to the plight of agricultural labourers when his novel Yeast appeared serially in Fraser's Magazine. The Crimean War and the outbreak of cholera in 18534 were invoked in his novel Two Years Ago (1857), his most successful and coherent novel of contemporary life. Kingsley's continuing concern with sanitary reform, which had led him to join a deputation to the prime minister on the subject in 1854, was dramatised in the efforts of his doctor hero to combat cholera and unhealthy housing conditions. However, in the novel hedid express satisfaction with improvements in the conditions of agricultural life since Yeast. Condition: The binding is tight and firm. The rearhinge is just starting, but still firm. The front board and pastedown is attached by the cords only, and may become detached in the post. There is some mild wear to the extremities, with some mild bumping with loss to theleather at the top of the spine, andsome mildrubbing to the edges. Internally the pages are clean with mild browning. Overall the condition is good only due to the damaged hinges, with a very good interior..
