THE MEMOIRS OF COUNT CARLO GOZZI

John C. Nimmo 1888 and 1890, London - 8vo "With Essays on Italian Impromptu Comedy, Gozzi's Life, The Dramatic Fables, and Pietro Longhi". Although this is a four volume, uniformly bound set, it consists of two sets of two volumes: one a limited edition (#473/760) published in 1890, and described as Part 1, and the other an edition showing no limitation and a publishing date of 1888, and described as Part 2. Certainly, it is curious that the second part of this set precedes the first part in the year of publication. Both sets contain illustrations of Italian comedic subjects, drawn by Maurice Sand, engraved on copper by A. Manceau and delicately coloured by hand; as well as original etchings executed by Adolphe Lalauze. However, the 1888 (Part 2) set only contains three etchings and five coloured plates (and lacks a List of Illustrations). The 1890 (Part 1) set has such a List, which calls for a frontispiece portrait and six etchings, as well as eleven hand coloured plates (all present and in fine condition). The crushed morocco 3/4 leather binding is ruled in gilt over complimentary marbled bds., with matching marbled eps. The spines of each volume are in compartments. Each spine is dated and intricately tooled in a semi-pointille style. The top edge is gilt and each book has a slim silk, ribbon, marker. The corners and joints of each volume show minor wear and rubbing. Otherwise, the boards are in very nice condition. There are one or two tiny abrasions to the bands of vol. 1, Part 1, and the top of the spine of vol. 2, Part 2, has been dented. The contents are slightly age-toned at the margins, but are otherwise quite clean and bright. A very good set. Four volume, uniformly bound set in 3/4 dark blue morocco [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Lover or Friend?

London: Richard Bentley and Son, 1890. - Home Life or Work Life? The Eternal Question for WomenThe Victorian AnswerCAREY, Rosa Nouchette. Lover or Friend? In Three Volumes. London: Richard Bentley and Son, 1890. First edition. Three octavo volumes (7 1/8 x 4 1/2 in; 180 x 113 mm). [4], 324; [4], 310; [4], 309, [1] pp. Publisher's original half brown cloth over patterned cloth boards. Gilt lettered spines. Publisher's original design gray printed endpapers. Spines very slightly cocked, otherwise fine.OCLC/KVK record only nine copies of the first edition in library holdings worldwide. ABPC has no auction records for any edition of Lover Or Friend? as far back into the past as 1923.A prime example of "safe fiction" for girls of the 19th century, which is to say highly conservative with an emphasis on the domestic duties of women, which take precedence over all other considerations and responsibilities.A very popular novelist in her time but now long forgotten, Rosa Nouchette Carey's ambition was "to try to do good and not harm by my works, and to write books which any mother can give a girl to read" (as cited by Black, Notable Women Authors). As such, the question Lover or Friend? - a suggestive title suggesting more than it delivers - aims at the latter, safely navigating the young female reader away from potential indelicacies to rest ashore a pure land not without its own difficulties, and it is there that the book still speaks to women stepping into the modern world yet fettered to the old, and frustrated. Juggling the roles of wife, mother, and working woman remains as much a daily struggle for women in 2011 as it was in 1890, though Carey's answer, concentrate on the domestic front, retreat from the other, may rankle 21st century feminists.Carey practiced what she preached. Though she enjoyed writing, she kept it a friend, not a lover."I do not think that I have known any author who has made her writing - the real work of her life - so secondary a matter as has Rosa Carey. She has so consistently lived her religion, so to speak, that family duty and devotion to its many members have always come first" (Helen Marion Burnside, as cited by Black)."Rosa Nouchette Carey (1840–1909), novelist, was born at Stratford-le-Bow, London, on 24 September 1840. As a child she told stories to her younger sister, and in this way created the plot of her first novel, Nellie's Memories (1868). The publisher's advertisements suggest that it sold over 52,000 copies. It was followed by many other novels, marked by pious tone, domestic subject matter, and a large number of rather unmemorable characters, which were staples of the market in safe fiction for girls during the last third of the nineteenth century."Yet, gushing and unpretending as her work is, she does depict the frustrations of such women with some sympathy, exploring the pains of living up to high ideals and the psychic cost of self-abnegation."Carey's literary career got going. in her late twenties. After the death of her mother in 1870 Carey and her remaining unmarried sister went to keep house for a widowed brother and look after his children; after the sister married and went to live in Kirkby Stephen, Westmorland (which provided a setting for some of Carey's fiction), the brother died and Carey was left in charge of the children. "As well as writing thirty-three three-volume novels, she was on the staff of the Girls' Own Paper, for which she wrote eight serials. She does not seem to have moved in literary circles, although she was a close friend of the novelist Ellen Wood (Mrs Henry Wood). The poet Helen Marion Burnside, who also worked for the Girls' Own Paper, lived with her from about 1875, and edited The Rosa Nouchette Carey Birthday Book (1901). When Carey's sister was widowed she returned to keep house for the two authors. Rosa Carey died of lung cancer at her home, Sandilands, Keswick Road, Putney, London, on 19 July 1909" (Oxford DNB) [Attributes: First Edition]

Browne, 24 of the full page plates have been hand coloured.Robert Smith Surtees (1803-1864) was born near Newcastle-on-Tyne, son of a country squire. He was educated and "articled" to become a lawyer, and eventually set up practice in Lincoln's Inn Fields in London. He practiced without great enthusiasm for several years. He began writing and contributed sporting articles to various magazine and in 1831 published a manual on the law relating to horses, The Horseman's Manual. In 1831 his older brother died and he became the heir, and he also started together with Rudolf Ackerman New Sporting Magazine of which he was the editor until the end of 1836. In 1837 he offered himself as a candidate for Parliament but withdrew before polling day. He had given up his practice as a lawyer and also his editorship by this time. His father died in 1838 and he succeeded to the Hamsterley estate and led the life of a country gentleman thereafter. His desire to depict the sporting world he knew in words made him unusual, and the Jorrocks papers had won immediate popularity. The editor of the Quarterly Review had sent a message in 1832 and later wrote directly to Surtees asking to produce a "cousin" and "throw materials into light dramatic form." Most likely this encouragement led to the writing of Handley Cross which appeared in New Sporting Magazine during 1838 and 1839.Tooley said: ". no finer series of Sporting Novels exists in the English language. As is so rarely the case in colour plate books, the text is as important as the illustrations".         DUNEDIN 1860 [cover title].

[Dunedin, New Zealand: Frank Coxhead, ca. ]. 1890 - Ten album cards, each with a vintage albumen photograph mounted on recto and verso, for a total of twenty photographs. Each image measuring 8 3/4 x 6 3/4 inches. Oblong quarto. Contemporary green cloth, rebacked with original backstrip laid down, gilt-stamped title on cover. Moderate spotting on cards, affecting a few images. Photographs captioned on images. Very good, with small promotional bookplate of Frank Coxhead on front pastedown reading: "We invite inspection of our superior collection of Photo Views of the West Coast Sounds, and other Views, before purchasing elsewhere." A wonderful assemblage of New Zealand views. Despite the assertion made on the cover, the present images were taken over a three-year period, from 1860 to 1863. Coxhead was one of Dunedin's best early photographers, active in Dunedin ca. 1870 through ca. 1893, operating his business on Princes Street from 1885 through 1893. Most likely the present images were reprinted ca. 1890 from the original negative plates. The images, which depict the port, mercantile areas, and certain residential districts, are listed below: 1) Bell Hill (1860). 2) Maitland Street. 3) Princes Street (1860). 4) N.E. Valley. 5) Dunedin (1861). 6) Maclaggan Street. 7) Dunedin from Bowling Street. 8) High Street. 9) Bell Hill (1861). 10) Rattray Street. 11) Dunedin from Canongate. 12) Dunedin from Bell Hill. 13) The Octagon. 14-17) Princes Street (1861-63). 18) Dunedin (1863). 19) Empire Hotel. 20) Gabrial's Gully. In 1861, gold was discovered in New Zealand, and the rush that followed prompted a rapid change in the physical environment. These images provide an excellent record of this early boom phase that vaulted Dunedin to the status of New Zealand's leading economic center by the end of the 19th century. Among the earliest attainable New Zealand photographic albums and exceedingly scarce. There is no reference work devoted to New Zealand photography, but, by comparison, the standard bibliography for Australian photographic books lists its first entry as 1864.

Baku: Bakinskii Dok imeni Kniazia Aleksandra Mikhailovicha Dudunkova-Korsakova [The Docks at Baku, dedicated to Prince Alexander Mikhail Dondukov-Korsakov]

Baku: , c.1890. Folio (420 × 335 mm) brown sand-grained cloth portfolio, titled as above in gilt to the front board within panel in gilt and blind, flaps of white moiré card, black cloth hinges. 11 albumen prints by "Zhorzh" (from 210 × 275 mm to 250 × 390 mm), all on card mounts (325 × 415 mm), all but of them one pink with decorative gilt borders. Just a little rubbed, but the joints all sound, the largest of the prints with some light wear at the edges, the mounts lightly soiled, but overall very good. Extremely uncommon series of photographic views of the new dock development at Baku, no other copy traced on OCLC, this copy with printed presentation, in Swedish, to the chief engineer on the project, Harald Fernström; "To the constructor-builder of Baku Docks … from the grateful owners of the same, Baku 1890". By the late nineteenth century Baku was fast becoming the global centre of the oil industry, a development which was accompanied by a commensurate surge in seaborne trade. Before the Bakinskii Dock was built the port lacked the deepwater docks required to service increasingly large vessels. Many of the technological and infrastructural advances in the region were made during the governorship of Prince Dondukov-Korsakov, a veteran and hero of the Caucasian, Crimean and Russo-Turkish Wars, the dedicatee of this collection. Images include general views of the site, and a number of views of the machinery and pumps used to control water levels in the dock. Laid in is a two-page autograph letter, in French, to Fernström from the Gwynne Company regarding representing the company in Baku; together with a sixteen-page printed catalogue of Gwynne pumping machinery; and five smaller, later photographs relating to dredging operations. A fascinating visual document of the development of the Baku oil-industry.

        THE SIGN OF FOUR

Spencer Blackett, 1890., 1890. First edition. Second state with Griffith Farran & Cos, Standard Library at bottom of spine. Lightly spotted on rear cover else a very good, tight copy. Housed in a quarter leather and cloth clamshell case with titles stamped in gold gilt on the spine. In 1888 a client, Mary Morstan, comes with two puzzles for Holmes. The first is the disappearance of her father, British Indian Army Captain Arthur Morstan in December 1878. According to Mary, her father had telegraphed her upon his safe return from India and requested her to meet him at the Langham Hotel in London. When Mary arrived at the hotel, she was told her father had gone out the previous night and not returned. Despite all efforts, no trace has ever been found of him. Mary contacted her father's only friend who was in the same regiment and had since retired to England, one Major Sholto, but he denied knowing her father had returned. The second puzzle is that she has received 6 pearls in the mail from an anonymous benefactor once a year since 1882 after answering an anonymous newspaper query inquiring for her. With the last pearl she has received a letter remarking that she has been a wronged woman and asking for a meeting. Holmes takes the case and soon discovers that Major Sholto had died in 1882 and that within a short span of time Mary began to receive the pearls, implying a connection. The only clue Mary can give Holmes is a map of a fortress found in her father's desk with the names of Jonathan Small and three Sikhs named Dost Akbar, Abdullah Khan, and Mahomet Singh.

        The Derby Day at Flemington

Pfaff Pinschof & Co, Melbourne 1890 - A fine copy of this lively view of the winner's enclosure for the 1886 Victoria Derby held at Flemington racecourse, Melbourne, Australia The Victoria Derby has been held at the Flemington course in November every year since 1855. The first race was won by Rose of May. The present scene, painted by Austrian-born artist Carl Kahler, shows Trident, the winner of the 1886 race, in the winner's enclosure surrounded by many of the most prominent citizens of Melbourne and the Australian racing world. Trident foaled in Australia in 1883, by Robinson Crusoe (an Australian stallion), from Coconut (an imported mare from Great Britain). Trident went on to win six major races in 1886 (including the Australian Derby) and a further eight in 1887. Kahler went on to spend some time in San Francisco (some reference works suggest that he died there during the earthquake of 1906, but the most recent information is that he was still alive and living in New York in 1926. Photogravure, on India paper, mounted onto thick wove paper.

        Zonen-Bilder

Stuttgart: Julius Hoffmann, circa, 1890. Oblong folio, 20 tinted lithograph plates; some restoration, general embrowning, and signs of use, but good in later cloth with original pictorial label, endpapers renewed. Dramatic hunting scenes. A rare nineteenth-century German colourplate natural history of the world for children. Each of twenty countries throughout Europe, Asia, America and Africa is described with two pages of text and a large colour plate by the noted nineteenth-century German artist and book illustrator Heinrich Leutemann (1824-1905). Most of the plates depict highly dramatic hunting scenes: either man hunting the animals, such as Indians on elephant back hunting tigers, or animals hunting and devouring other animals, such as lions eating buffalo and bison attacking bears. The final plate depicts three Australian Aboriginal hunters hiding from two rock wallabies which are pursued by a pack of dingoes. Their catch of a lyrebird, a platypus, a black swan and an emu are portrayed in the foreground.

Extensive Photographic Archive of her Travels in Italy and Egypt

1890-1. 374 large-format photographs are housed in a total of 9 folio red pebble-grained cloth book-style boxes with gilt lettered spines, moiré interiors and marbled edges, titled: Eight of them (340 ×280 mm) relating to Egypt and carefully categorised "Egypten: Cairo"; "Egypten: Moskéer och Koptiska Kyrkor [Mosques and Coptic Churches]"; "Egypten: Pyramider, Tempel och Obelisker [Pyramids, Temples and Obelisks]", 2 boxes; and "Egypten: Landskap och Folkstyper [Landscapes and People]", 2 boxes; together with a larger box (460 ×370 mm) containing 25 of the Queen's own photographs; and two matching boxes containing the 102 Italian views, titled "Italien". The boxes are slightly rubbed, with minor signs of wear; three with short splits on front hinges, and three others neatly rebacked with the original spines laid down; a couple of photographs with minor chips to the corners, but overall the collection is in excellent condition and handsomely-presented. An important collection of 374 large-format photographs of Egypt and Italy made during the travels of Victoria, Queen of Sweden (1862-1930), the collection includes 25 photographs (250 × 300 mm) of Egypt taken personally by the Queen in 1890-1891, together with a large portrait photograph of a Turkish officer (365 × 220 mm) captioned on verso "Zeki Bey/ Uppvaktaude has de kunliga [introduced to the king]", taken by the studio of O. Schoefft "Photographer de la Cour, V. Giuntini & G. Khoskantz Successeurs, Caire", this is possibly the Zeki Bey who served at Gallipoli, was borther-in-law of the last sultan Mehmed VI and accompanied him into exile; and 348 large photographs 200 × 260 mm or slightly smaller. Of these, 246 are Egyptian views, landscapes and street scenes, taken in Cairo, Karnak, Medinet Habu, Luxor, Ibsamboul, Medamut, Aswan, Giza, Abu Simbel, Alexandria, Heliopolis, Suez - offering high-quality panoramic views of temples and pyramids, the Nile itself, streets and squares of the major cities, mosques and Muslim tombs, Arab houses, souqs, and various genre scenes and "types", street-vendors, barbers, soldiers, cameliers, women and children; scenes of Arab meals and pastimes - in short, a vividly touristic and high-Orientalist view of Egypt. Of this group over a hundred photographs are from the studio of Antonio Beato; and more than 140 from the studio of Pascal Sébah, many signed in the negative. All of the photographs are mounted on stiff cardboard leaves, loosely inserted in the impressive custom-made boxes, with around a third of with neatly inked captions in Swedish. A unique and exhaustive collection of photographic views of Egypt, its great monuments, portraits of her people and their everyday life, from the collection of Queen Victoria of Sweden. As Princess of Baden, Victoria had married Gustaf V of Sweden in order to strengthen ties between the German and Swedish courts. Despite the birth of three children, it was not a happy marriage - Gustaf was rumoured to be bisexual - and the couple's summer trip in 1890-1 may have been arranged in an attempt to rebuild the relationship. Victoria was a strong-willed and independent woman, as well as being highly artistically accomplished in a range of media. She was an skilled amateur photographer and painter, and she also sculpted. During this trip she both photographed and painted extensively, experimenting with various developing techniques, and producing some genuinely impressive photographic work. The trip triggered her interest in archaeology and collecting antiques, and Victoria's impressive collection of Egyptian antiquities was later donated to the University of Uppsala, where it is still housed today. This superb photographic archive was clearly assembled by a person close to the Queen during her travels, possibly her attending personal physician, and, as noted, includes 25 large photographs taken by Victoria personally. Accompanying the collection is a copy of Victoria's highly attractive, and extremely uncommon, privately printed account of her Egypt travels, Vom Nil (Karlsruhe, 1892), just six copies on OCLC, all in Germany; together with first and second editions (Stockholm, 1923 and 1931) of her biography "Drottning Victoria", similarly uncommon with just a handful of copies of both. All three feature images from the Egyptian expedition made by the Queen herself. The print of the picture of the renowned Cairo Mena House Hotel is inscribed by her on the mount "Till minne af NyÃ¥rsdagen 1891 pÃ¥ Mena House/ frÃ¥n/ Victoria [In memory of the New Year's day 1891 at Mena House/ from Victoria]" this image being reproduced at p.78 in the second edition of the Queen's biography. Fifteen of the Queen's photographs are captioned in Swedish on verso, with four specifically noted as "Foto taget 1891 af Kronprinzessin". Six further photographs from the group were reproduced in the Queen's Egyptian book; the reproduced photographs are "Bedouin girls" (p.21), "Cameel mit Zuckerrohr" (p.24), "Chephren-Pyramide" (p.52), "Cataracten-Landschaft" (p.102), "Bellal" (p.103), and "Ammontempel von Karnak" (p.141). Other of the Queen's images offer well-composed and accomplished views of the banks of the Nile, Philae, Karnak, the Pyramid of Cheops and Great Sphinx of Giza. Loosely inserted in the box containing this group there is an elaborate Arabic document, part-printed in gold, and completed calligraphically, together with the original decorated envelope with the annotations "Dr. Lundberg", and "Ordensbref Osmaniéorden", which would appear to the official letter conferring the Order of Osmanieh, the second highest order of the Ottoman Empire, on Victoria's doctor.

        Lutetia. Paris.

1890 - Paris: c.1890. Coloured lithographic map on nine sheets conjoined, total 1350 x 1390mm. Laid on canvas. A full-size facsimile of the first geometric plan (as opposed to a bird's-eye view) of Paris, showing the city as it was in 1647. Orientated with north to the right, it shows the layout of the streets in detail, although the major buildings are still shown n profile. In the top corners are a prospect of the city from Montmatre and a view of the Louvre. In the bottom corners of the plan are two neoclassical pedestals containing elevations of the Royal palaces and other country houses, surmounted by trophies and armorials. At the bottom, outside the oak-leaf border is another strip of elevations. Jacques Gomboust, Louis XIV's 'Ingénieur du Roi', compiled this plan from a number of smaller surveys he undertook, publishing it in 1652 with a dedication to Louis XIV and a text describing the problems he had constructing the map. He wrote that 'without extraordinary help, how do you think that an individual could leave this labyrinth? Consider the quantity of streets, the number of churches, convents, hospitals, schools, hotels, bridges, embankments and other public places that are on this map. And imagine how many observations would be necessary to create the map and projection of each one in its correct measurements of length, width and height since the plan and contour of a citadel causes much trouble. We have even judged it necessary not to represent the bourgeois homes whose size and dimensions we could not have given correctly without an infinite amount of time'. The original engraved version of this plan very rarely comes on the market. PETERS: Mapping Discord, p. 75-7.
