Eigenh. Brief mit U. ("Johann Orth").

Birstein, 20. II. 1890. - 4 SS. auf Doppelblatt. Gr.-8vo.

Shortly after getting married, Theodor Herzl writes to a friend undoubtedly regarding his work regarding "Die Dame in Schwarz" for which he teamed up with Hugo Wittmann

Theodor Herzl writes to a friend from Hamburg on October 24, 1890. The letter reads in full, "Dearest friend! Your letter has been forwarded to me here where I took refuge one day ahead of the annoying matter of the scheduled rehearsals. My plans are to return tomorrow morning. So far, Hasemann did not contact me and I purposely did not call on him either before receiving your message. Now I shall definitely approach him to bring the matter to a conclusion, if possible. I do think that he is the most suitable individual for that. I intend to work on the "couplets" during my trip home. At the moment, there are too many other issues mulling around in my head. Do write to me to my Berlin address "4 Jahreszeiten" where I will be residing again tomorrow. Eight days from today I expect to be in Vienna. Cordial greetings from your devoted, Herzl."         Autograph letter signed ("Johann Orth").

[London], 1. II. 1890. - Large 8vo. 2 pp. After renouncing his ties with the Imperial family, Johann Orth purchased a captain's license and bought the British barque "Saint Margaret" in January 1890. Together with his recently wedded wife and the entire crew, he got caught in a storm while sailing along Cape Horn on the night of 20 to 21 July and sank; neither he nor the crew was never heard from again. This fine letter (addressed to Anton Weissenböck, the manager of Castle Orth) gives detailed information as to which objects had been found aboard the "Saint Margaret": "all the silverware, china and glasswares, as much kitchenware as strictly necessary for the preparation of fine dinners for eight persons, 3 tablecloths for 12 persons, 8 tablecloths for 6 persons, 9 tablecloths for 4 persons; 20 small, grey napkins, 17 sheets, 18 pillowcases, 32 towels; bottles of wine: champagne 31, Hochheimer Dechantei 6, Hochheimer 10, Issan 10, Johannisberger 8, Madeira 3, Sherry 10, Muskat 4, Julien 14, Chablis 10, Rücksheimer 8, Vöslauer 42, Grinzinger 74, Larose 4, Julien 3, Oporto 1, Runkelsteiner 2; liqueurs: all; my white flannel trousers; my gun with bullets (green paper cartridges - not the brass ones) [.]". - On stationery with printed letterhead "Morley's Hotel, Trafalgar Square"; adhesive tape in the centerfold.

Norwegische Tänze für Pianoforte zu vier Händen von Opus 35 für Pianoforte solo vom Komponisten.

Leipzig: C.F. Peters, n.d. c.1890 - Quarto. Original printed card wraps, spine reinforced with linen. A little soiled, a few minor chops from the edge, but overall very good. Ownership inscription of Thomas "Fats" Waller to the upper wrap. Waller impressed early on with his keyboard skills, playing alongside his mother in the church where his father was a preacher from the age of 10, and accompanying the movies on the organ at the Lincoln Theater, Harlem, when just 14. He later became a pupil of the stride legend James P. Johnson, and also received classical tuition from Leopold Godowsky, his friend George Gershwin's sister's father-in-law, but his reputation rests upon his natural pianistic ability and his outrageous swing. However, like so many jazz musicians he sought "a more serious scope for his music" (Pollack, George Gershwin), and it is unsurprising to find his signature attached to this Grieg piano score. In fact, in Viper's Drag, his tea-tinged stride extravaganza from 1934, he quotes the theme from Grieg's The Hall of the Mountain King in the left hand. On the lower wrap Fats has pencilled the Broadway address of Edward I. Brown, the "rep" for the Robert Morton Organ Co. A wonderful piece of jazz ephemera of great immediacy, to hand on his piano it was used to jot down a 'phone message [Attributes: First Edition]

Lowell (1819-1891) author, teacher, magazine editor [The Atlantic Monthly, The North American Review], and public servant, produced a formidable canon of prose during his long and venerated career. This Presentation Copy, contains a long, signed inscription on the front fly leaf of Volume I, from Lowell to Thomas Francis Bayard, Secretary of State under Grover Cleveland and the first U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain. Bayard. J.R. Lowell 31st Dec. 1890" SIGNED BY BAYARD. Additionally signed by Bayard: T.F. Bayard, Nov. 7th, 1890. & & Lowell was considered primarily a poet, but his essays and literary criticism proved him to be an apt humorist and political satirist as well. His early career showed him deeply involved with the abolitionist movement. “Thus at twenty-nine, he had made his challenge in all the fields of production in which his ultimate place among American writers must be determined.” His Bigelow Papers [1848] satirize and criticize America’s involvement in the Mexican War, especially in regards to the possible extension of slavery. A later series of Bigelow Papers readily conveyed his sentiments on the Civil War and had a visible effect on public opinion at that time. In 1877 he was appointed Minister to Spain and the minister to the Court of St. James in 1880.&

Two Original Photographs of Vancouver Looking Towards the North Shore, circa 1890. With A Panoramic Photo Type Postcard of Vancouver Looking Towards the North Shore, circa 1900.

Vancouver: circa 1890-1900. - Two Photographs measuring approximately 10 x 18cm (4 x 7 inches) and a Photo Postcard measuring approximately 8 x 53cm (3 x 21inches), mounted with recent archival matting. The photographs and the postcard are in very good condition. These images give an interesting depiction of the early development of Vancouver. "The settlement which came to be called Gastown grew up quickly around the original makeshift tavern established by "Gassy" Jack Deighton in 1867 on the edge of the Hastings Mill property. In 1870, the colonial government surveyed the settlement and laid out a town site, renamed "Granville" in honour of the then-British Secretary of State for the Colonies, Lord Granville. This site, with its natural harbour, was eventually selected as the terminus for the Canadian Pacific Railway to the disappointment of Port Moody, New Westminster and Victoria, all of which had vied to be the railhead. A railway was among the inducements for British Columbia to join the Confederation in 1871, but the Pacific Scandal and arguments over the use of Chinese labour delayed construction until the 1880s. The City of Vancouver was incorporated on 6 April 1886, the same year that the first transcontinental train arrived. CPR president William Van Horne arrived in Port Moody to establish the CPR terminus recommended by Henry John Cambie, and gave the city its name in honour of George Vancouver. The Great Vancouver Fire on 13 June 1886, razed the entire city. The Vancouver Fire Department was established that year and the city quickly rebuilt. Vancouver's population grew from a settlement of 1,000 people in 1881 to over 20,000 by the turn of the century and 100,000 by 1911"(Wikipedia).
