        SUSPENSE. In Three Volumes

London: Richard Bentley, 1890. Merriman, H. S. [Hugh Stowell Scott]. SUSPENSE. In Three Volumes. London: Richard Bentley, 1890. First Edition. An excellent copy in original publisher's deep blue cloth, decorated in both silver and gilt with a fancy sword design to the front boards, characteristic of Bentley's late Victorian penchant for super elaborate and eye-catching triple-decker novel design. The volumes are slightly cocked, there is a tiny bit of abrasion and some smudging to the edges but Very Good indeed. H. S. Merriman (Hugh Stowell Scott) died rather suddenly at the age of 41 but had already becomes one of the best-selling English authors of the 1890s. According to John Carter & Michael Sadleir in their 1947 classic exhibition catalogue, Merriman was the creator of "the strong, silent hero" of Victorian Fiction and they found it a suspenseful mystery in itself why Hollywood didn't adapt his fantastic plot-driven adventure tales. EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE. Sadleir 1729, Wolff 4772.. First Edition. Decorative Cloth. Very Good.

Silver Collars 2 for 25 cents. "Gold" and "Silver" shirts - Original Wall Display Mirror advertising Silver Collars & Gold Shirts, in the original oak frame

Troy, NY: George P. Ide & Co.,, c.1890. Beveled glass mirror (13.5 x 17.5 ins.) mounted in original quarter-sawn oak decorative frame, with carved details around mirror edge, decorated in silver paint (18.75 x 22.75 ins.), with the advertising slogan reverse painted in silver at upper and lower edges of the mirror. Some minor damage to the mirror mercury-based finish at lower fore-edge with some bubbling, very minor damage to the frame, still a very well-preserved example, archival foam core now mounted against the reverse of the mirror, beneath the original fir backing, to prevent further degradation. A wonderful advertising display for Ide Silver shirts and collars, which originally came out of the downtown Vancouver, WA Store, which at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century catered to men's clothing, accessories, and shoes. George P. Ide & Co. was founded in 1865 by George P. Ide and S.V.R. Ford as Ide & Ford. Ide was one of the pioneers in the shirt & replaceable collar industry in Troy, NY which along with Arrow Collars, and others, grew by providing women with an easier way to clean their husbands' stained shirt collars without having to wash the entire shirt. In addition, the collars wore out a much faster rate than the rest of the shirts, so these replaceable collars would extend the life of the garments. In 1884, the company became George P. Ide & Co., and within the next 2 decades opened branch factories in Albany, Mechanicsville, Newburgh, Port Henry, and Keeseville, as well as a laundry plant in Petersburg. At the end of the 19th Century, they were one of the largest manufacturers of removable collars for men, and their line of Silver & Gold Shirts was marketed extensively. Their advertising usually emphasized a subtle play on Silver. See Men's Wear (Semi-Monthly), Vol. 24, p. 59 (1908); The Troy Daily Times, 1899, p. 17.

        Caesar Cascabel

New York: Cassell Publishing Company, 1890. First American Edition. Cloth. Very Good. George Roux. George Roux. First American Edition. iv, 373 pages. 8vo. (6 x 8 3/8 inches; 15 x 21.3 centimeters) Publisher's olive green binding with black and gilt pictorial embossed decorations. Minor wear at the corners and extremities. Small stain affecting frontis, title page and a few pages afterward. Two signatures proud, just starting to loosen up. A touch of browning throughout. Still pleasing face out or on the shelf. Cloth. "The list of books that will be appropriate Christmas presents is long and tempting ... Jules Verne's new work, to be entitled 'Caesar Cascabel', will be a stout octavo, profusely illustrated, describing a travelling show consisting of the hero, an acrobat and his family, together with horses, dogs, parrots and mokeys, who traverse the American Continent and go back to France by land and ice via American Russia." Taves and Michaluk further note an oddity - Cassell copyrighted this work long after it was offered for sale. Originally advertised as costing $3.00, it was released at $2.50. Myers notes an example in pictorial blue cloth. Colleagues have seen this book in other colors (including the olive green noted here), with no priority yet established. The first English edition was by Sampson Low, Marston & Co. in 1891. The plates are printed on one side only (later Cassell editions the illustrations were printed back to back to save costs). Bleiler (1948), p. 273. Myers 7. Taves and Michaluk V037.

The Origin of the Aryans: An Account of the Prehistoric Ethnology and Civilisation of Europe

New York: Scribner & Welford. 1890. Second American edition (originally published in the US in 1889). Front hinge amateurishly restored, although not particularly offensively, corner bumped and rubbed, near very good. Front fly, and rear pastedown stamped: "Personal. Morris (Moe) Berg." Signature of "E. Berg," almost certainly that of his sister Ethel Berg, with whom he spent a substantial part of his life, and who later wrote a very scarce and desirable biography, My Brother Morris Berg. The Real Moe. The first half of the book is extensively underlined by Berg in pencil, with occasional notes in his hand. Berg is a remarkable figure, a lower middle class Jewish boy born in New York who was a Princeton and Columbia Law School graduate and professional baseball player who spoke seven languages (and who inspired the remark, "and he can't hit in any of them"). He appeared on the quiz show Information, Please! and put on a dazzling performance, belying the image of the knuckle-headed ballplayer. He used his time on a barnstorming tour of Japan to film Tokyo Harbor, the footage of which proved important to the eventual American war effort, and later was a spy for the US both during and after WWII. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which he refused (but which Ethel accepted on his behalf after his death). His baseball card is reportedly on display at CIA headquarters. His life inspired several books, among them Nicholas Dawidoff's 1995 biography The Catcher Was a Spy: The Mysterious Life of Moe Berg. .

As a youth Hutton trained in the fence under Henry Angelo Jr., and after ten years in the Army became a "pupil and friend of McTurk, Angelo's successor at the school of arms in St James's Street [devoting] himself to the practice of modern fencing with foil, sabre, and bayonet, but chiefly to the study and revival of older systems and schools … In 1890 he published Fixed Bayonets, in which he insisted that a competently wielded bayonet should beat a good swordsman, but his views of bayonet fighting were regarded in the army as too theoretical for modern practical instruction. He retorted by deploring military reliance on Italian theories of swordsmanship to the exclusion of effective French practice." (ODNB) He was the first president of the Amateur Fencing Association, and promoted the beginning of national championships for men from 1898 and for women from 1907, the official historian of the AFA considering that; "The revival of interest in, and the development of, fencing in Great Britain during the first decade of this century were undoubtedly due chiefly to his enthusiasm and untiring work." A very nice copy of an uncommon work.

Venice, circa 1890. A catalog of 58 large albumen photographs of lace mounted to coated linen pages. The image size averages 9 x 8 inches ( 229 x 203 mm.), though there are 6 folding photographs, measuring 12 ½ x 10 inches ( 318 x 254 mm.). Folio, 13 ¼ x 9 ½ inches ( 337 x 241 mm.). Leather backed pebbled cloth with gilt text on cover; old repairs to spine and tips; light wear. Splendid examples of lace (merletti in Italian) in the form of bed and chair canopies, parasols, fans, tablecloths, bed coverings, trims, and accessories are illustrated in the catalog. Using large negatives and contact printing, the photographer presents the ornate lace segments in sharp and crisp detail. Most of the subjects are displayed flat against a dark background, though a few, such as a parasol and a fan, are shown as complete objects. The Testolini company was a large retailer of Italian textiles and lace in Venice during the late nineteenth century. Expanding into Venetian glass, in 1910 his firm absorbed the Compagnia Venezi - Murano (CVM). In 1920 Testolini merged with Pauly & Co., which is still in business.
