        Götzen-Dämmerung (Twilight of the Idols).

C.G. Naumann, Leipzig 1889 - TP + [i]-[iii] = Vorwort + [v] = Inhalt + [1] - 144, Octavo. First Edition, First Issues (Schaberg 56a).Nietzsche had 1,000 copies of this work privately printed. Nietzsche began to write Twilight of the Idols at the end of June of 1888 and was finished by early September-another lightning-quick production that he claimed to have been the "work of so few days that I am hesitant to mention exactly how many." His hesitancy becomes even more understandable when one remembers that part of July was devoted to the preparation of the final typescript of The Case of Wagner and that during August he produced two "Postscripts" and the "Epilogue" and then proofed the entire work. In the final analysis-when the book was finally completed-Nietzsche bragged to Gast that "I could hardly have used ten days more efficiently for it certainly took me no longer to write the book." Yet another ten-day wonder! The new book was originally entitled A Psychologist at Leisure when Nietzsche mentioned it to Naumann on 7 September:I am about to give you a nice surprise. You probably think we are finished with printing but even now the cleanest manuscript I have ever sent to you is on its way. Regarding layout and design, this new work should be a twin to The Case of Wagner. The title is A Psychologist at Leisure. It is imperative for me that we publish this now because by the end of next year we will have to begin the printing of my main work The Revaluation of All Values which will be a stern and serious book and I will not be able to publish anything cheerful and winsome right after it.This book, though not very large, may cause a few ears to be opened so that the main work will not be greeted with silence like my Zarathustra. The manuscript was mailed two days later and the single-page first draft for the Preface came three days after that. Nietzsche thought of this book-in conjunction with the Wagner book-as a light and brief respite before the publication of his masterwork: "In the final analysis, both of these works are only recuperations in the midst of an immensely difficult and decisive task which, when properly understood, will split humanity in two." Unfortunately, Nietzsche never recovered from these "recuperations" and The Revaluation of All Values was never completed Even as the book was being printed, Peter Gast pleaded with Nietzsche to change the title:When I consider how other people will respond to this title, I think A Psychologist at Leisure is much too unassuming. You have dragged your artillery to the highest mountains, you have guns such as have never existed, and even if you shoot blindly you will inspire terror all around. The stride of a Giant which can make the mountains shake to their core is hardly leisure . . . and so I plead-if an incompetent may make such a request-let us have a more resplendent, a more radiant title!Nietzsche immediately agreed and changed the title to Twilight of the Idols, and three days later, he penned the final version of the Preface, which was dated 30 September 1888.(Schaberg, The Nietzsche Canon, pp. 166-167). Recent period-style ¾ black leather with blue and tan marbled boards. The spine with 5 raised bands, and gilt decorations on the bands. Gilt title the second compartment, gilt authors name in fourth compartment. The interior is clean, tight and bright. A really gorgeous copy of this important work by Nietzsche.         WEE WILLIE WINKIE and Other Child Stories

1889. [in the scarce first state] Allahabad: Messrs. A. H. Wheeler & Co., n.d.[1889]. 2 pp preliminary ads plus 7 pp ads, undated. Original grey-green pictorial wrappers. First Edition, first state, of the sixth volume of Wheeler's "Indian Railway Library," and the last of Kipling's initial series (one more of his works would be added a few years later -- THE CITY OF DREADFUL NIGHT, No. 14 in the Library). This volume contains his early collection of four tales for children -- the title tale, plus "Baa Baa Black Sheep," "His Majesty the King" and "The Drums of the Fore and Aft." (The first three had appeared in an Indian periodical, but for "The Drums" this is its first appearance anywhere.) Per Kipling's Preface,~This is the last book of the series, and it naturally ends with the little children who always trot after the tail of any procession. Only women understand children thoroughly but if a mere man keeps very quiet, and humbles himself properly, and refrains from talking down to his superiors, the children will sometimes be good to him and let him see what they think about the world...~1500 copies were printed in March 1889; as they were bound up and issued, four discreet changes were made to the front wrapper (designed by Kipling's father, head of the Mayo School of Art in Lahore). This copy has the wrapper in the very scarce first of the four states: the periods are NOT present in "A H Wheeler" (in the second state they are present), and below the design it reads only "Mufid i am Press Lahore" (in the third state would be added "Moyo School of Art, Lahore," and in the fourth this would be corrected to "Mayo...").~This is a very good-plus copy, with a bit of the almost-unavoidable edge-chipping of the very delicate wrappers (atypically, however, the spine is intact). Richards A19; Stewart 54; Livingston 43. Housed in a morocco-backed slipcase with inner chemise.

Edwin Arnold's Poetical Works [Signed 2X]

Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1889. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. A Very Good copy of Edwin Arnold's Poetical Works, presented in two volumes, with EACH VOLUME SIGNED, CONTEMPORARILY DATED, AND PLACED BY EDWIN ARNOLD on the second front free endpaper (spine ends worn and showing so loss, modest shelf wear, board corners rubbed); being a complete edition of Arnold's then-existing Poetical works. [Roberts Brothers published an earlier collection of Arnold's works in 1880, the Preface to which earlier, less comprehensive, edition, is included in this edition, as is, of course, the Preface to this larger 1889 edition.] Arnold is best-known for his "Light of Asia" (1879), an Indian epic dealing with the life and teaching of the Buddha, an important work which introduced the Buddha to the west, was quite popular both in England and in America, is included in Volume I of this set, and which constitutes his primary work in his effort to render the life and philosophy of the East in English verse. In our experience, signed copies of Light of Asia in any edition are exceptionally difficult to find. A Very Good copy, CONTEMPORARILY SIGNED, LOCATED, AND DATED BY ARNOLD IN EACH VOLUME. QUITE SCARCE INDEED. [PLEASE NOTE: International shipment must be by Priority Mail.]

        Illustrated Catalogue of Portrait Miniatures

ondon- The Burlington Fine Arts Club 1889 - A beautifully illustrated catalogue of the collection of portrait miniatures at the Burlington Fine Arts Club. With 36 full page photographic plates. The Burlington Fine Arts Club was a London gentleman's club based in Savile Row and established in 1866. The Club had its roots in the informal Fine Arts Club, a gathering of amateur art enthusiasts that met in Malborough house in 1856. In 1866 they formalised the new club. The club aimed to evoke the atmosphere of a typical gentlemen's club for those interested in art, as well as to provide a showcase for amateur artists. Part of the clubhouse doubled as a regular exhibition venue, the location having been selected for its proximity to Mayfair art dealers. Condition: In a cloth binding. Externally, a trifle rubbed with bumping to extremities. Wear to head of spine. Some marks to boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages foxed to first and last but otherwise clean and bright with just the occasional spot and handling mark. Overall: VERY GOOD [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Holy Land in Three Divisions: Jerusalem and Galilee; Jordan and Bethlehem; Idumea and Petra

Cassell, Petter, Galpin & Co, [c. 1889]. All parts bound in one volume Half folio (approximately 10 x 14 inches exclusive of margins) Illustrated with 120 tinted lithographs by Louis Haghe from original drawings by David Roberts. (all present.) Plates slightly larger (32 x 24 cm) than in the earlier quarto edition and are also identified outside the image original scarlet padded morocco, heavy gilt decorations, spine with raised bands, extra gilt, lettered in gilt, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers David Roberts, R.A. (24 October 1796 - 25 November 1864) was a Scottish painter. He is especially known for a prolific series of detailed lithograph prints of Egypt and the Near East that he produced from sketches he made during long tours of the region (1838-1840). These and his large oil paintings of similar subjects made him a prominent Orientalist painter. He was elected as a Royal Academician in 1841. In 1838, Roberts embarked on a journey that would shape Europe's perception of the Middle East and then Roberts worked with lithographer Louis Haghe from 1842 to 1849 to produce the lavishly illustrated plates of the Sketches in the Holy Land and Syria, 1842-1849 and Egypt & Nubia series. He funded the work through advance subscriptions which he solicited directly. The scenery and monuments of Egypt and Holy Land were fashionable but had hitherto been hardly touched by British artists, and so Roberts quickly accumulated 400 subscription commitments, with Queen Victoria being subscriber No. 1. Her complete set is still in the Royal Collection. The timing of publication just before photographs of the sites became available proved fortuitous Spine ends, edges and corner a little rubbed, spine a tad darkened (gilt very bright), preliminary and terminal leaves with some brown spotting rarely affecting the image area of the plates [

Chicago, 1889. Colored folding map, 36 1/4 x 51 inches. Closed splits along several folds, but with no loss in map image. Two tears in left margin, with some paper loss. Good overall. One of the first maps of South Dakota published after it became a state in 1889. This is a handsome large folding map, with the eastern portions and the Black Hills region highly subdivided. The region west of the Missouri is quite open, with many Indian agencies located, including Standing Rock, the Cheyenne Agency, the Lower Brule Agency, the Rosebud Agency, and the Pine Ridge Agency. The location of Fort Randall on the Missouri is shown, and a long narrow vertical strip in the north central portion of the state is identified as "not in any county." This map is copyrighted 1889 but dated 1890 in the upper left margin. The scale is eight miles to the inch. An impressive South Dakota state map.       1889. first edition. My Prison Has Its Pleasures?"Beautifully Bound by Captain C.E. GladstoneGLADSTONE, Captain C.E., binder. BLUNT, Wilfrid Scawen Blunt. In Vinculis. London: Kegan Paul, Trench & Co., 1889. First edition, Large Paper copy limited to fifty copies signed by the printer of the Chiswick Press, Charles Whittingham, of which this is No. 13.Octavo ( 7 13/16 x 4 15/16 inches; 198 x 127 mm.). [2], viii, [1, contents], [1, blank], [1]-63, [1, imprint] pp. Etched portrait frontispiece.Bound by Captain Gladstone ca. 1900 (stamp-signed "C.E.G." on front turn-in) in full green crushed levant morocco, covers richly hand-tooled in gilt with an all-over vine and leaf design. Smooth spine with similar gilt tooling and lettering, gilt ruled board-edges, wide and elaborate gilt vine and leaf design turn-ins, pink watered silk liners and end-leaves, top edge gilt. Spine faded otherwise a very fine example of a 'signed' Captain C.E. Gladstone binding. In the 1880s, the book's publisher (Kegan Paul, Trench & Co.) developed "a solid reputation in London for serious literature, especially poetry, for religious books and for science" (Howsam 26). To understand the context from which In Vinculis [Sonnets written in an Irish Prison] was written, a brief summary of the current political climate of Victorian Britain in the 1880s is required. The formal beginnings of the Irish "Home Rule" movement in support of domestic political autonomy started with the creation of the Irish Home Government Association by Isaac Butt, an Irish MP at Westminster, in 1870. In 1873 the group was re-branded as the Home Rule League. In 1880, the growth of the "Home Rule" movement was becoming a significant political force within the British Parliament. The Liberals under William Ewart Gladstone were the ruling party for much of the decade, but the party had to walk a fine line between implementing liberal political reforms (such as the Married Women's Property Act in 1882 that gave married women the same rights over their property as unmarried women, and the Corrupt and Illegal Practices Act in 1883 that attempted to limit bribery and intimidation in elections and allow poorer candidates to run) and appealing to the conservative elements within the party that were essential to maintaining rule. The number of Irish MPs within the Home Rule League grew to the point that in 1885 under new leader Charles Stewart Parnell, they held the balance of power within subsequent minority governments (a short-lived Conservative minority in 1885, followed by a Liberal minority in 1886). Failure of Gladstone's first Home Rule bill in 1886 led to the Liberal's defeat as a contingent of Liberal MPs opposed to Home Rule broke away from the party (forming the Liberal Unionist Party) and supported the Conservatives.Wilfrid Scawen Blunt (1840-1922) was a poet, hedonist, diplomat, Middle Eastern traveler, Arabian horse breeder, political activist, and notorious lover. As a poet Blunt is known best for his love sonnets (initially published under the pseudonym "Proteus"), which described his amorous encounters with more explicit detail than was typical for the Victorian period. He also became politically active during the second half of his life, staunchly anti-imperialistic and supportive of political independence for nations still under the colonization of the British Empire, including Egypt, India, and Ireland. His support of the Irish nationalists in their quest for "Home Rule" (self-governance for domestic issues while remaining part of the United Kingdom) led to his incarceration by the British parliament's Chief Secretary for Ireland in 1888, setting the stage for writing his prison sonnet sequence, In Vinculis.Captain Charles Elsden Gladstone, RN, (1855.1919). Very little is known about Captain Gladstone other than he was born in Salford, Lancashire and lived in London, Hertfordshire and then Broadstairs in Kent. According to the 1891 census of England & Wales his occupation was listed as "Commander Royal Navy" and then in 1901 as "Commander of H.M.S. Eagle". We believe that he, like the Irish finisher Sir Edward Sullivan (who signed his books "E.S. Aurifex"), had his books bound by a local bookbinder - possibly John Smith of Maidstone, and then did the hand-tooling (finishing) himself. Apparently he was also a talented photographer - there are mentions of him in The British Journal of Photography (1889), the Journal of the Microscopic Society (1893) and he was an officer of the Lantern Society from 1890-93. His bindings with their very distinctive decorations are very often, but not always, signed in gilt "C.E.G." on the front turn-in.

A Doll's House: Play in Three Acts

London: T. Fisher Unwin,, 1889. Translated by William Archer. Square octavo. Original japon vellum, gilt lettered spine and front cover, publisher's device in gilt on back cover, top edges gilt, others untrimmed. Half-tone portrait frontispiece of Ibsen, 6 half-tone plates of actors in various roles. Binding showing general signs of handling, slight cockling to covers. A very good copy. First edition in English, number 7 of 115 copies signed by the publisher: scarce. Ibsen's groundbreaking drama was first published in 1879 and in the same year premiered at the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen on 21 December. This translation is by the theatre critic and journalist William Archer (1856-1924), who first met Ibsen during a tour of Italy in 1881 and their friendship became "an enduring relationship of mutual respect, fostered by Archer's translations and productions of Ibsen's plays... he helped direct his translation of Ibsen's A Doll's House, staged at the Novelty Theatre on 7 June 1889 for twenty-four performances. He was meticulous in his attention to expressive details, concerned always at achieving thoroughly realistic effects... His pioneering advocacy of Ibsen in England cannot be underestimated (he wrote more than 175 pieces about Ibsen), although his other contributions to the theatre are equally valuable" (ODNB).
