The Nursery Alice First Edition, 1889 by Lewis Carroll

In an interesting preface Lewis Carroll comments that he wanted to have an edition of Alice in Wonderland that was read, or rather, "to be thumbed, to be cooed over, to be dogs-eared, to be kissed" by children aged from "Nought to Five". This edition of The Nursery Alice was complied with simpler and larger text. It also contains coloured mechanical enlargements of twenty of the original John Tenniel illustrations. The original 10,000 copies were printed by Edmund Short but were rejected by Dodgson as they were 'far too bright and gaudy', so were reprinted. 12 copies were specially bound unpriced as samples for the American market. 4000 were sent over to America (known as the 2nd state). 6000 then overprinted with 'People's Edition' and priced 'two shillings'. Finally the few sets of sheets left over were 'sold off cheap' priced one shilling. This edition is known as the 4th issue and is very scarce. Illustrated glazed paper boards with cloth strip spine. Pictorial design of Alice asleep and dreaming beneath a tree signed E. G. Thompson. The rear cover has a picture of the March Hare in the center and the initials E. G. T. Cream endpapers with owner's inscription dated "1898" on front free page. Coloured frontpiece with tissue guard. Title page has One Shilling overprinted with an ornamental bar over the earlier price of Three Shillings. Therefore noted as the 4th 1897 issue. A Nursery Darling poem. Preface and Contents with 16 chapters. A few pencil marks within the text. Otherwise colours and pages are clean. An Easter Greeting, Christmas Greetings and 2 pages of other works of Lewis Carroll advertised at the end of the book. 10 x 73/4". 4to. 56 printed pages of the story.

        THE MASTER OF BALLANTRAE

1889 - [fine in yellow wrappers] A Winter's Tale. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1889. 2+8 pp undated ads. Original printed yellow wrappers. First American Edition (published on the day after Cassell's London one). Stevenson freely acknowledged that his inspiration for this book was Robert Marryat's THE PHANTOM SHIP (1839), which he had recently read. RLS began writing BALLANTRAE in Saranac Lake in 1887 but did not finish it until his first South Seas voyage in 1889.~This copy is in yellow wrappers; others were in red cloth (no precedence, just two options at different prices). Condition is remarkably fine: there is essentially no soil or wear, except for a short (closed) tear at a fore-corner of the first few leaves. This American edition is much scarcer than the English edition -- especially in the delicate wrappers, and especially in this condition. Furthermore -- tipped onto the half-title is a slip with "With the Author's Compliments" in printed script. See Beinecke 488 (in cloth -- curiously the Beinecke collection does not list a copy in wrappers); Princeton 41C (in yellow wrappers). [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

1889. An album of 25 albumen prints (vintage), measurements usually c. 200 x 270 mm, one a double-page spread, many captioned in English. Bound in contemp. giltstamped auburn full calf (378 x 280 mm; spine rebacked). All edges gilt. Photographic record of a journey begun in Australia and taken, via Aden, through the Suez canal and to the Mediterranean (and then on to England). While the first image shows the steamship R.M.S. Ormuz in the port of Sydney, three images (including a double-page spread) show the port of Aden in Yemen, the famous water tanks, and a native of the Southern Arabian region in a studio portrait. The majority of the album is dedicated to Egypt, showing Arabs on their camels, the Khedive's Ismailia Palace, the Suez Canal, Port Said, and members the local population, as well as the famous pyramids. The last few photographs show the final leg of the journey: Naples, and ultimately Gibraltar. Among the studios identified in the photographs are those of Hippolyte Arnoux and the Zangaki brothers, based at Port Said. A slightly later inscription on the flyleaf identifies this album as that of Edith Elkington: "Aunt Edith's voyage home to England about 1889". - Some foxing and waterstaining, but prints largely clean.

The author and three unnamed friends started for the Northwest in August, 1888, for a glorified hunting and fishing trip in the mountains and lakes of Montana. The narrative describes the settlements and settlers encountered, including the Indians, principally Blackfeet. The narrative was first printed serially in the Troy Daily Times and subsequently printed in this very small edition, illustrated with original photographs, for presentation. The remarkable photographs represent a vivid and important photographic record of Montana at the time. Included are photographs of towns, ranches, Indian agencies, Indians (including Cree, Blackfoot, and Piegan), portraits, landscapes, camp scenes, and other fine views. "The photographs are by the author himself and constitute an immensely important record of the Far Northwest, its towns, ranches, Indians, agencies, etc. The narrative is one of surpassing interest, describing the outfitting at Great Falls; the Baker Massacre; Trapper Bill Weaver; Piegan Indians; the Big Horn; Starvation Camp; western horses and Indian ponies; horse thieves; Blackfoot Agency; life among the Indians; cattle ranges and ranches; Great Falls, its mushroom growth, future, etc. The volume is a veritable 'book of the plains' -- a home-made production in make-up and appearance, and one of the most sought of all books relating to Montana (Eberstadt). This example a presentation copy, inscribed and signed by the author on a front blank: "Mr. John Boetcher, with the compliments of Charles S. Francis. Troy, Aug. 15, 1889." A great Montana rarity, and one of the finest of 19th-century photographically illustrated books of the West. Traduction par J. Dautremer. 9 volumes.

1889 Original Paperback Wisden but with Facsimile Spine.

Hi, This lot is an Original 1889 Wisden Paperback with facsimile spine. This is in Good condition, the main concern is that the covers are quite dark to front and back and corners have been touched up. The covers are tall with these new corners but nice to see an 1889 with covers as it is usually the ugly baby (on the first page) that greats you on a rebind. Internally it shows some signs of wear but generally it is nice with a nice photoplate, the first photoplate produced. Hard to find year. Strange wear to the top cm of the rear cover. New spine professionally added which makes the book readable and stops it falling apart.

Collection of 19 Vintage Cabinet Card Views of the 1889 Johnstown Flood

Group of 19 cabinet cards by a local photographer, R.Y. Nice of Williamsport, Pennsylvania, depicting the aftermath of the famous flood and subsequent damage in the town of Williamsport, including Nice's studio and other local commercial buildings partially underwater, townspeople navigating the streets in rowboats, birds-eye views, and scenes of destruction and debris, some with captions incised into the negatives. Cabinet cards with mounted albumen prints measuring 4" x 6 1/4", numbered 2 through 20 in the lower left corners, some with Nice's name printed on the mount. Williamsport, Pennsylvania 1889. The Johnstown Flood was the worst flood to hit the United States in the 19th century, causing the deaths of 2,209 people and the destruction of 1,600 homes. The flood was one of the first major disaster relief efforts to be handled by the newly-founded American Red Cross, under the leadership of Clara Barton.
