New Italy: A brief sketch of a new and thriving colony founded and established by the Italian immigrants who were sufferers by the Marquis De Ray's New Ireland colonization scheme.

      - Sydney, Govt Printer 1889. Large octavo publisher's flush cut roan, front cover titled in gilt; [6],30pp & folding map. The title is headed: 'Richmond River District of New South Wales'. As foolishly indulgent as it may seem for such a slender book the edges were marbled. Mackaness copy with his bookplate. This settlement in north east New South Wales must be the first concentrated settlement of Italian agriculturalists in this country. Until recent years this particular aspect of the aftermath of the Marquis de Ray debacle was neglected in most things on the affair - Niau, the daughter of a French survivor, pretty well ignores the Italians in her history 'The Phantom Paradise'. Irregardless of the appalling adventure that led the Italian survivors to the district, New Italy was possibly the most successful semi-utopian communal settlement in Australia. Clifford, who came across the isolated settlement by chance, gives the background, a good account of their virtues and achievements (extolled as models), and their names. His particular interest in viticulture and fairly prolonged discussion of it also makes this necessary for any serious collection of Australian wine books. Journalists who followed Clifford to New Italy were less enthusiastic about describing a thriving success but their criticisms were directed at the authorities, not the settlers.

Illustrated with seven original photographs tipped in as issued, including a frontispiece portrait of Ibsen. A little foxing on the boards, a near fine copy. Copy number 99 of 115 copies Signed by the publisher. The photographs were executed at the Cameron Studio, taken by the son of pioneer photographer Julia Margaret Cameron. A lovely copy of this classic, perhaps the best known play by one of the world's greatest dramatists.         Pen and Ink Drawing of woodcock

n.p., n.d.. 5 inches in diameter. Pen and ink on paper, signed in pencil. Framed and glazed . Edgar Burke, MD (1889-1950) successfully combined the vocation of medicine (he was a member of the American College of Physicians and Surgeons) and the avocation of sport. He was an enthusiastic wildfowler and upland gunner, and expert angler and fly tyer (he designed the flies "Doctor Burke" and "Family Secret") and was interested in pigeon racing and cock fighting (it was he, in the Jersey City cock-fights of the 1930s, who sewed up the wounds of the injured birds). He was also a celebrated sporting artist, illustrating two Derrydale Press classics, Feathered Game (1929) and Upland Game Bird Shooting in America (1930), and producing front cover vignettes for seven more, including Grouse Feathers, and De Shootinest Gent'man. He was, notes Siegel, a childhood companion and lifetime friend of Derrydale proprietor Eugene Connett--a relationship that paid large dividends for readers of the Press

Autograph musical quotation signed ("G. Verdi") from the composer's opera Falstaff

2 measures with text "Tutto nel mondo è burla," comprising the beginning of the theme of the fugal finale from the end of the opera, dated "Milano 8-3-93." Attractively double-matted and framed with a bust-length postcard photograph of the composer. Overall size ca. 305 x 460 mm. & & Slightly browned; one small spot to right-hand margin not affecting quotation. . Verdi's last comic opera, Falstaff, in 3 acts to a libretto by Boito after Shakespeare's The Merry Wives of Windsor and King Henry IV, Parts 1 and 2, was composed in 1889-1892 and first performed in Milan on February 9, 1893. & & "A common view of Verdi's last works sees them as divorced from everyday concerns, a trope often used in discussing an artist's final creative stage: as one commentator put it, Otello and Falstaff are ‘the old man's toys’. The image chimes well with those famous pictures of Verdi in the 1880s and 90s: the felt hat, the simple frock coat, the all-knowing, gentle smile. So far as Falstaff is concerned, Verdi himself encouraged such interpretations, frequently reiterating in letters and interviews that ‘in writing Falstaff I haven't thought about either theatres or singers. I have written for myself and my own pleasure’. It may be comforting to nurture this picture of serene old age, and it is indeed true that neither of Verdi's last operas much resembles any other work, whether by Verdi or by anyone else. However, there is much evidence suggesting that the composer was far from serene about the political and artistic direction his country was taking, and that the last operas in some ways reflect this dissatisfaction."         Picturesque Palestine, in Three Volumes. Volumes I-III [COMPLETE]

London, Virtue, (1889).. Three volume set. Complete. Royal quarto (32 x 27 cm). Pp. x, 240 plus 10 steel-engraved plates; vi, 240 plus 12 steel-engraved plates; vi, 240 plus 11 steel-engraved plates and a double-page engraved map of Palestine, printed in orange and blue, with inset plan of Jerusalem. The total number of 33 plates includes four different steel-engraved frontispieces and four different, large steel-engraved title vignette, all printed on heavy paper bound-in, with tissue-guards. The three volumes are illustrated with a total of 429 wood-engraved illustrations, many of which are full-page, all with explanatory captions. Index to each volume. Titles printed in red and black. Hardcover, uniformly bound in the original publisher's richly decorated green cloth, gilt panelled and lettered, spine gilt, bevelled boards, all edges gilt, yellow endpapers. In about fine condition (occasionally some spotting; slight wear to spine ends.) A very handsome set, very well preserved. ~ Second edition, published in three volumes. It does not differ from the first edition, in four volumes, which was published in 1881. The publisher, James Virtue, seeking new marketing opportunities, substitute the line ?In Four Volumes? with ?In Three Volumes? and did not reissue the fourth volume, devoted to Sinai and Egypt. Other editions followed suit. Appleton of New York has published a two-volume version, rather crowded in comparison with the original, and indeed one that could not match the exceptionally fine, two large folios of the German edition that was published in 1833 under the direction of Georg Ebers and Hermann Guthe. Although it is Wilson who receives all the credit for this monumental work, it is the contribution of the authors whose work he edited that makes this three-volume opus of value. Distinguished Palestine explorers such as Canon Tristram, Charles Warren, M. Rogers, and notably Major Claude Reignier Conder, R.E. (1848-1910), as well as several others created the necessary balance between image and word. The superb steel engraved plates are printed here with fine, crisp detail, subtlety and elegance. Noteworthy are the artists who produced them. Most of the original paintings were made by J. D. Woodward and Harry Fenn. Born in England in 1838, Fenn came at the age of 18 to the United States where he has achieved great success as an illustrator of books, was one of the founders of the American Watercolor Society, and has been one of its exhibitors nearly every year since its organization. Some of his best work is contained in ?Picturesque America,? ?Picturesque Europe,? and ?Picturesque Palestine?. A keen traveller, Fenn has travelled extensively through the United States, Canada, Europe, Egypt, Palestine, and the Sinai Peninsula. Other artists include C. Werner and H. A. Harper. The engravings were executed by numerous outstanding craftsmen, noteworthy among them are C. Bertrand and E. Brandard. The numerous lovely and lively wood-engraved illustrations complete this celebration of word and image. A fine set. [Total weight: 10 kg].

The Plantation Negro as a Freeman

New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons. 1889. First. First edition. Octavo. 262, [4]pp. Modern period-style full calf with black morocco spine label gilt. From the library of T. Thomas Fortune, bound with a frontispiece-type engraved portrait of John Mercer Langston, and Inscribed by Langston to Fortune: "To Mr. T. Thomas Fortune, with fraternal regards, John Mercer Langston. Oct. 11, 1883." Both the frontispiece and blank leaf on which the inscription is written are narrower than the other pages in the book. The book came to us without boards with other books from Fortune's library (in similarly poor condition), but with the portrait and inscription clearly integral and previously bound together, presumably Fortune had it bound as such. A major association, the Florida-born Fortune was an important journalist and radical black activist who studied law but did not graduate from Howard University. Langston was a Virginia-born freeman, an abolitionist, an important activist, the first Dean of the Howard Law School, the first African-American to be elected to Congress from Virginia, and was the great-uncle of Langston Hughes, who was named for him. Presumably, Langston presented this book by the important Virginia historian Philip Bruce to Fortune, and Fortune embellished it with this portrait of Langston. .

La seconda spedizione svedese nella Groenlandia. I ghiacciai dell'interno (l'Inlandsis) e la costa orientale. Eseguita a spese del signor Oscar Dickson. Versione italiana autorizzata dall'Autore per Adolfo Massoni.

Fratelli Treves,, Milano, 1889 - In-8°, pp.VIII + 528. Brossura editoriale. Route Map of the Mormon Pioneers from Nauvoo to Great Salt Lake, February 1846; with Guide to the Route Map of the Mormon Pioneers

Salt Lake City, UT: Millroy and Hayes, Map Publishers, 1889. First Edition, First Printing . No Binding. Very Good. Double Elephant - over 25" - 50" tall. A vibrant pictorial map of the Mormon exodus from Illinois to the state of Deseret. Offered with the accompanying "Guide to the Route Map of the Mormon Pioneers." Both are unusual, especially offered together. The guide and map are based on diaries of the journey written by Orson Pratt, and occasionally his brother Parley P. Pratt. Both were members of the original Quorum of Twelve. The map and guide have corresponding daily progress along the route. The map shows dates and mileage, as well as scenes along the route. We're a bit amused that the Moab area looks so watery and verdant. Two versions of the map were published; this is the original, larger printing. A later version was distributed by the New Wilson hotel in SLC. Little information is available about Millroy and Hayes as publishers; OCLC yields no further results on their collaboration. J. J. Millroy on his own was known for several early maps of Alaska and BC, designed for use by would-be gold prospectors. Map has been stored rolled, very little wear except for some creasing and small tears along edges. Free of stains and markings, some light toning with age. 14" tall x 42" long. The accompanying guide shows some enthusiastic penciling by a young one, with a few ink splotches and underlinings to the interior. A few tears to edges, one corner of rear is missing. Graff 3585, Flake 5411.
