        Arbuckles' Illustrated Atlas of the United States of America

      Arbuckle Bros.. 1889.. Booklet, 48 chromolithographic pictorial maps, one representing each state, 4 per page with text describing each state on verso of previous page, 7 x 11 inches, color pictorial wrappers (softbound). Chipping / small areas of paper loss and light foxing /soiling to covers, light bump to upper right corner not affecting images, interior in very good condition. These attractive images were issued as individual trade cards for Arbuckles' coffee, and here gathered as an atlas of the United States, wonderful advertising for this inventive company. On the front cover is an illustration for the District of Columbia, with a large image of the US Capitol and an emblem including a map, the stars and stripes with an eagle. A card for Alaska is on the back cover. The illustrations bordering the maps represent the industry and agriculture of individual states. The booklet was a unique advertising concept for an American company dealing on the world stage and a companion piece to Arbuckles' Illustrated Atlas of Fifty Principal Nations of the World. .

Details the mountains, valleys, lakes, rivers, hot springs, deserts, and other wonders of the "Eastern Slope" of the Sierras. Much on mineral and agricultural resources including towns, settlements, mining and reduction works, railways, lumber flumes, pine forests, systems of water supply, great shafts and tunnels, and the many improvements and industries of Nevada. Paher 2221 says "As an introduction to western Nevada for the tourist, the author compiled this handy guide stressing its geographical features and its industries. There is an informative history of the initial Comstock discovery and the "rush to Washoe," other historical events, routes and distances, a directory of western Nevada towns with interesting historical summaries of each, a sketch of Lake Tahoe and its bays, and Nevada's resources, especially mining and agriculture. Once common, this paperback is becoming scarce in the first edition." A tiny closed tear to fore-edge of front cover and a bit of light pencil markings in the margins throughout the text that is easily erasable, else a near fine, tight, clean copy housed in a clamshell case with titles stamped in silver on the spine. Considered rare today.

Complete with Gilbey's tipped in slip printed red explaining the purpose of this publication and 3 inserted revised price lists for 1889. Boards slightly soiled with a few small light stains, 1 tiny ink stain to upper cover, 1 partial dark cup ring stain to lower cover, corners slightly worn with board showing at tips, spine slightly worn and slightly stained, small dusty mark to a few margins, fore - edge of page 15 very slightly worn, at rear a tipped - in leaf with a Supplementary List of Agents is chipped at inner and lower edge with loss of first letter of a few names of places but all easily legible. A good plus copy of a scarce publication on the wines and spirits imported by a major British firm in the late 1800s.         Photograph album.

      Yemen, Egypt and other places, c. 1889.. An album of 25 albumen prints (vintage), measurements usually c. 200 x 270 mm, one a double-page spread, many captioned in English. Bound in contemp. giltstamped auburn full calf (378 x 280 mm; spine rebacked). All edges gilt.. Photographic record of a journey begun in Australia and taken, via Aden, through the Suez canal and to the Mediterranean (and then on to England). While the first image shows the steamship R.M.S. Ormuz in the port of Sydney, three images (including a double-page spread) show the port of Aden in Yemen, the famous water tanks, and a native of the Southern Arabian region in a studio portrait. The majority of the album is dedicated to Egypt, showing Arabs on their camels, the Khedive's Ismailia Palace, the Suez Canal, Port Said, and members the local population, as well as the famous pyramids. The last few photographs show the final leg of the journey: Naples, and ultimately Gibraltar. Among the studios identified in the photographs are those of Hippolyte Arnoux and the Zangaki brothers, based at Port Said. A slightly later inscription on the flyleaf identifies this album as that of Edith Elkington: "Aunt Edith's voyage home to England about 1889". - Some foxing and waterstaining, but prints largely clean.

Original light green cloth pictorially decorated in green, black and pale yellow. First Edition. This is an anthology of nineteen "new and original" children's tales, by such authors as R. M. Ballantyne ("A Gallant Rescue"), George Manville Fenn ("How the Starling Caught Cold"), G. A. Henty ("True to her Charge") and Charlotte Yonge ("Neighbour's Fare") -- the majority of them being by women. Dartt says that the preface precedes the title page in Skeffington copies, and follows the title page in Dutton ones -- but in this Skeffington copy (like another light blue copy we have had) the preface follows the title page.~This copy is in near-fine condition, with little external wear.       London, Her Majesty's Stationery Office, 1889.COLOURED FLAGS OF THE NATIONS 1889. 4to, approximately 280 x 210 mm, 11 x 8½ inches, chromolithograph additional title page, 121 chromolithograph plates numbered 1 - 121, 20 additional chromo plates numbered 32a, 32b, 39a etc, plus 43 inserted illustrations of flags and badges colour printed on thin paper, mostly half page size, some larger, 31 pages plus 12 errata leaflets (1891 - 1902) bound in after the title page, a total of 30 pages, giving instructions on where the additional plates and inserts are to be placed, these have all been carried out correctly, except that the insert which should overlay plate 65 is missing (mentioned in Errata 2). In the original half leather binding, cloth sides with gilt crest and lettering to upper cover, rebacked at some time in leather with the original backstrip laid on, gilt rules and gilt title, inner hinges strengthened. Original backstrip worn and chipped, corners worn and covers slightly marked, round library ink stamp at foot of title page, another on reverse, no stamps to contents which are bright and clean with no foxing, closed tear to lower margin of plate 52, neatly repaired on reverse and not affecting image, small onlay of cross of St. George on unnumbered chromo plate showing make up of Union flag in the text section secured long ago with small piece of sellotape. Binding tight and firm. A very good copy complete with all additional and substitute plates published up to 1902 except 1 as noted. First published in 1875. Gilbey, 1889.. 1889, 4to, 275 x 215 mm, 11 x 8½ inches, coloured frontispiece of Cabernet Sauvignon Grapes, 6 engraved plates on cream tinted ground showing stores, distilleries of Gin and Whiskey, bringing in the wine, Chateau Loudenne, the various departments in the Camden headquarters, a few small views and illustrations of bottles in the text, plus a map of the Medoc, pages: 49, (1 - blank), bound in the original cloth backed illustrated boards which have a total of 4 vignette illustrations of Gilbey buildings in London, Dublin, Edinburgh and Medoc on upper cover, and 11 depictions of vineyards and wine making on the lower cover, new pale yellow endpapers. Complete with Gilbey's tipped in slip printed red explaining the purpose of this publication and 3 inserted revised price lists for 1889. Boards slightly soiled with a few small light stains, 1 tiny ink stain to upper cover, 1 partial dark cup ring stain to lower cover, corners slightly worn with board showing at tips, spine slightly worn and slightly stained, small dusty mark to a few margins, fore-edge of page 15 very slightly worn, at rear a tipped-in leaf with a Supplementary List of Agents is chipped at inner and lower edge with loss of first letter of a few names of places but all easily legible. A good plus copy of a scarce publication on the wines and spirits imported by a major British firm in the late 1800s. Contemporary tan polished calf by John Bumpus, spines gilt-lettered direct and with floral motifs in compartments, board edges gilt with dotted roll, turn-ins gilt, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. With the half-titles. A little occasional rubbing to extremities, a very good copy. First complete translation into English from the Russian, the work of the American editor and translator Nathan Haskell Dole (1852?"1935). This English issue omits the preface to the American edition but retains Dole\'s editorial footnotes. Walter Scott reissued the work in two volumes in 1897. The English translation was preceded by Vizetelly\'s truncated version and by Clara Bell\'s translation from the French, both 1886. Dole was the editor of Tolstoi\'s Collected Works (20 volumes, 1899).
