THE MARBLE FAUN. Or the Romance of Monte Beni. Illustrated with Photogravures in two volumes. Large - Paper Edition.

Riverside Press 1889 Testo inglese. Opera in due volumi. Cm.22x14,6. Pg.VIII, 530 complessive. Esemplari in barbe. Vistose bruniture. Riportiamo integralmente il "Publishers' Advertisement", che illustra la particolare cura della presente, rarissima, edizione in tiratura limitata: "Ever since the first publication of The Marble Faun, travellers and lovers of Rome have used the book as a souvenir, and have found in its pages a most agreeable record of impressions created by the Eternal City and by the works of art preserved there. So satisfactory is the book in this regard that it early became the custom of visitors to Italy to collect photographs of the statues, paintings, and buildings referred to in the romance, and to interleave the book with them; and this has become so common that dealers in Rome and Florence make it their practice to keep such photographs arranged and ready for the traveller. Nevertheless, photographs are unsatisfactory pictures for such a purpose, and the volumes in which they are interleaved are apt to be displeasing to a fastidious collector. The publishers of Hawthorne's works have therefore taken the hint from this well - established custom, and have prepared the following edition, by printing the work in two volumes and adding to the text photogravures of fifty subjects. Great care has been taken by the publishers in the choice of photographs, and their selection is not a mere repetition of the dealer's choice. Every traveller knows that there is a wide difference between the best and the poorest of these photographs, and no pains have been spared to obtain the best made directly from the objects themselves. The publishers trust that they have thus given Hawthorne's classic a presentation more acceptable, not only to travellers but to all lovers of art and letters, than would have been possible had they resorted to the ordinary method of employing artists to illustrate the story. Some of the buildings illustrated have disappeared since Hawthorne saw them and wrote of them; others are likely to be altered or removed in the rapid change which is passing over Rome, and the work thus becomes a valuable record of the past as well as a pleasure to the eye".

Two Original Unsigned but Dated Watercolours Titled:] "Old Fort in the Amazon near Para, Feb. 1889" & "On the Amazon - Para, Feb. 1889."

      - Feb. 1889. Watercolours ca. 11x20,5 cm (4 ½ x 8 in) & 12x24 cm (5 x 9 ½ in). Recently matted, overall very good watercolours. Two attractive watercolours of Belém, the capital and largest city in the state of Pará, Brazil and the gateway to the Amazon. "Founded in 1616 by the Kingdom of Portugal, Belém was the first European colony on the Amazon but did not become part of Brazil until 1775." (Wikipedia). Little is known about the artist however from the photograph and watercolour of the clipper Sobraon found with these watercolours one can assume that the watercolours were created on a voyage from the United Kingdom to Australia. The Sobraon was used as an immigration ship between the England and Australia between the years 1866 and 1890.

(Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana:5223) First edition. George Henry Mackenzie was born on March 24, 1834 in North Kessock, Scotland. In 1862, he defeated Reverend George MacDonnell in a match in Dublin, Ireland (+6-3=1). In 1863 he emigrated to the United States and enlisted in the Union Army. In 1864 he rejoined the Army and fought with distinction in three battles. However, he was arrested again on the previous desertion charges and imprisoned. He was released in May, 1865 where he moved to New York and started playing chess. In 1866, he won a tournament in New York. In March 1866, Mackenzie defeated Gustave Reichelm in New York in a match (+5-0=2). In 1867, Mackenzie defeated Reichhelm in Philadelphia (+7-0=2) for the title of U.S. Chess Champion.         Palingenesia Iuris Civilis. Iuris Consultorum reliquiae quae Iustiniani digestis continentur ceteraque Iuris Prudentiae Civilis fragmenta minora secundum Auctores et libros disposuit Otto Lenel.

Leipzig, Bernhard Tauchnitz, 1889.. 2 Bde. 4to. (I:) Tb., 3 Bll., Titelblatt, 1308 Spalten; (II:) Tb., 1264 Spalten. - NDB XIV,204f. (E. Bund); Kleinheyer-Schröder, 2.A., 1996.

3 vols.

Fagerstrand pr. Høvig, Bibliothek for de tusen hjem, (1889). 8vo. 3 vols in later printed full cloth. Bindings with light soiling and miscolouring to spines. All three volumes with ex-libris (Olga Siegfried Wagner). A fine set. (Frontispiece), 445, (1) pp.; (Frontispiece), 456 pp.; (Frontispiece), 488 pp.. The rare first Norwegian translation of Darwin's "The life and letters of Charles Darwin, including an autobiographical chapter" - being the first translation of any of Darwin's works into Norwegian ("Origin" was translated into Norwegian in 1890).A complete Danish translation of the work has never been published and the first Swedish translation did not appear until 1959. Due to the similarities between Danish, Swedish and Norwegian, this edition in effect introduced Darwin's letters and autobiography to Scandinavia.Martin Simon Søraas is listed as translator on all three title-pages whereas Freeman lists Peder Jacobsen Ulleland as having translated vol. 1. and Martin Simon Søraas as having translated vol. 2 and 3. Ulleland is listed in Freeman as having translated vol. 1 because he initiated a translation but only finished volume 1. Sørensen (the publisher) quickly discovered that Ulleland did not have the required skills as a translator and Sørensen fired him. Eventually Søraas was hired and he translated all three volumes. In the latter half of the 19th century, Pope was part owner of the Dorchester-based brewery Eldridge Pope; Barnard's letter to him briefly discusses the publishing of Barnard's work as well as the breweries mentioned in the series. Also included is another letter and a small hand-written note, both addressed to Pope, as well as a small advertisement for Gudgeon & Sons.

Du sang et de ses altérations anatomiques.

Paris, G. Masson, 1889. "The greatly increased knowledge of the chemistry of hemoglobin was complementary to the studies of Hayem on erythrocytes and hemoglobin in chlorosis." (Wintrobe, p. 173). Dans la drépanocytose (sickle-cell anemia), "Hayem described many real and artifactual distorsions of red cell shape." Garrison & Morton, 883 et 3130 ; Wintrobe, p. 22, 64, 82, 173, 320, 552-553, 620, 639 ; Dreyfus, pp. 38-40 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Australia Twice Traversed

London: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle & Rivington, Limited, 1889. Two volumes, octavo, with 21 plates, six folding coloured maps and illustrations in the text; in the fully pictorial grey-green cloth boards, lettered in gilt, untrimmed; spines a bit faded and rubbed, slightly loose, corners and extremities slightly frayed; the F.G. Coles copy with bookplate. "The last of the Australian explorers..." First edition: 'arguably the most handsomely produced of late nineteenth-century Australian books' (Wantrup).Giles, with some justice, called himself 'the last of the Australian explorers', and was the first to attempt the crossing from the Telegraph Line to Western Australia. In 1872 he set off from Chambers Pillar with two companions on a modest expedition, financed largely with the help of Ferdinand von Mueller. Failing to cross Lake Amadeus, he turned back, but not before he had traversed some 1000 miles of hitherto uncharted territory. Giles cherished the hope of making a successful crossing, and although 'forestalled by Peter Warburton and John Forrest, Giles succeeded in his cherished aim of making an overland crossing from South to Western Australia in 1875. Equipped with camels by Thomas Elder, he set out from Beltana and went for supplies to Port Augusta whence he proceeded first north-west and then west along a string of waterholes, Wynbring, Ooldea, Ooldabinna and Boundary Dam, until he reached the Western Australian border.' (ADB)Australia Twice Traversed represents the collected narratives of Ernest Giles's five expeditions through the centre and the west of Australia from 1872 to 1876. Giles struggled repeatedly to find an overland route to Western Australia, but it was not until his expedition of 1875-6 that he achieved the extraordinary feat of crossing the continent from South to Western Australia, via the Great Victoria Desert, and returning via Gibson's Desert (which he had earlier named after one of his men). This is among the most handsome of nineteenth-century Australian books, and one of the most popular of all Australian exploration accounts.
