The Extermination of the American Bison

Washington: Smithsonian Institution 1889, 1st Edition. () 548pp. Very good. Octavo. Original dark brown cloth boards, blind stamped. With gilt lettering on spine. Inscription on front free endpaper. Twenty-one black and white plates. One fold-out map. Hornaday was an American zoologist and taxidermist. He is cited with being a pioneer of early wildlife conservation in the USA. While working for the United States National Museum, he undertook a census of bison in America and came to the conclusion that the extermination of the bison was already inevitable. He mounted a buffalo for the mueum collection that stayed from 1886-1950, and later was restored again in 1996 and placed in the Museum of the Northern Great Plains in Fort Benton, Montana. His research had a lasting effect on him, and he later went on to become President of the Wild Life Protective Association, and to co-found (with Theodore Roosevelt) the American Bison Society. He helped with the passage of legislation that extended protection to all manner of species: birds, game, bison, and seals to name a few. This copy is inscribed from Hornaday to "Col. R.D. Dodge, with compliments and thanks of the author". Dodge was a well respected Colonel that held a long career in the United States Army from 1844-1891. He became linked to a distinguished military and political family in 1858 through marriage to Julia Rhinelander Paulding. Julia was the grandfather of General William Paulding, of the War of 1812 and a former Mayor of New York City. Jame Kirk Paulding, the author and Secretary of the Navy, was her great-uncle, and John Paulding, captor of British Spy John Andre, was a cousin of her grandfathers. This is a very nice copy with interesting associations and would make a great addition to any collection..

BOUDOUSQUIE'S REFERENCE MAP OF MOBILE AND VICINITY.

      T. Fitzwilliam & Co., Lith.; Paul C. Boudousquie, C.E., Del., Mobile, Ala., New Orleans, LA 1889 - Matted, glazed, and framed. 50 x 30 cm. map, within a slightly larger border. Map is lightly creased from folding, printed in pale yellow and blue, showing Mobile Bay at the center, and the growing port of Mobile on its western bank. Legend in the upper right corner contains the title, and a promotional paragraph: "The magnificent system of water ways with the fully equipped railroads centering in Mobile, the only natural outlet for the vast agricultural and mineral products of the State of Alabama, entitles this section of the United States of America, to its geographical importance, acknowledged by the commercial world. As a Summer or Winter Resort, Mobile is unsurpassed; her soil is porous and the surrounding balsamic forests absorb readily the moisture from the Mediterranean of the New World. With religious and educational institutions unexcelled, her countless social attractions invite the attention of tourists, invalids and investors for whom this Map has been especially prepared, from all recent obtainable data, by Paul C. Boudousquie, C.E., Mobile, Ala." Railroads, projected railroads, County roads and drives, and points of historical interest are delineated, plus hotels, race courses, mills, etc. Verso of the map prints a few short paragraphs on "The Gulf City. The only Free Port in the Union and the only outlet for the Rivers of Alabama. Mobile, Mobile County, State of Alabama." extolling its extensive offering for commerce and culture. OCLC lists two copies [both are photocopies] at the Univ. of Alabama. One is smaller in size, dated 1872 & 1889; the other is similar in size to this copy, but is a modern reproduction, dated 1982. According to the collector from whom we purchased this item, the Mobile historian Caldwell Delaney, head of the Museum of the City of Mobile for 40 years and Howes US-iana author, called this the rarest of maps delineating Mobile.

Facsimile-Atlas to the Early History of Cartography with reproductions of the most important maps printed in the XV and XVI centuries. Translated from the Swedish Original by Johan Adolf Ekelof and Clements R. Markham

Stockholm: Norstedt, 1889. Large folio, 510 x 340 mm, with 170 maps on 51 plates, many of them double-page, and a further 84 illustrations in the text; neat library stamps of Forbes Library (Massachusetts); a very good copy in half red cloth over the original brown cloth boards. "Man's growing acquaintance with the form and disposition of the globe" Original edition of an extraordinary resource: this tremendous book was the first really systematic approach to the study of cartographic history. Altogether 169 of the most important maps printed before 1600 are reproduced here, including the complete contents of the 1490 edition of Ptolemy and finishing with the Flemish and Dutch cartographers of the Age of Discovery. It is an absolutely essential reference work. As Bernard Quaritch pointed out in 1899, offering this and the Periplus (see following item) for ten guineas, it brings together 'all the rare and remarkable maps which have recorded man's growing acquaintance with the form and disposition of the globe. It is a treasury of important maps, many of them so rare as to be practically inaccessible to most students of the subject; as no collector, and no museum however rich and old, could boast possession of all the originals...'.Nordenskiold was himself a great explorer; among other achievements, it was under his command that the Vega made the first complete crossing of the Northeast Passage.

        Götzen-Dämmerung (Twilight of the Idols)

Leipzig: C.G. Naumann, 1889 TP + 3 leaves + [1] ?" 144, Octavo (Schaberg 56) FIRST EDITION.Gotzen-Dammerung includes some of Nietzsche?s most direct and scathing attacks on many decadent "idols" within the history of philosophy. In classic Nietzsche style, he probes the psychological landscapes of these "declining" types whose thinking originates in a place of weakness rather than strength. Many identify Gotzen-Dammerung as both a summary and introduction to Nietzsche?s overall philosophy.Nietzsche wrote The Twilight of the Idols (originally entitled "Mussiggang eines Psychologen" or "A Psychologist at Leisure") between the end of June and September, 1888, and sent the manuscript to Naumann in early September, with his final additions to the text being sent October 4th. Naumann finished printing the 1,000 copies by November 13th, shortly after which advance copies were sent out to Nietzsche and others. The book appeared in book stores on January 24th, for sale in wrappers for 2.25 marks and bound for 3.50 marks. Two weeks earlier the now-demented Nietzsche had been transported to a clinic in Basel, never to regain his sanity. (See Schaberg, pp. 166-169 for complete details.)Rebound in contemporary, marbled paper-over-boards, cloth spine, very light wear. Title and author hand-tooled in gilt along spine. Renewed endpapers. Internally clean and free of markings. Very good+

THE ARMY AND NAVY OF THE UNITED STATES

1889 - WALTON, William. THE ARMY AND NAVY OF THE UNITED STATES, 1776-1891. Philadelphia: George Barrie, 1889-1895. Edition de luxe, number 164. Two folio volumes in 12 parts: Army; Navy, and a register of the Army and Navy from 1775-1865. [2], 128; 38, 171 pp. Housed in publisher's cloth portfolios, while the 12 parts are present, one of the portfolio folders is missing. Illustrated with 44 hand-colored plates and with numerous black & white illustrations tipped-in to text leaves. Plates and text are printed on paper watermarked with the title. The plates are beautfully colored and fresh. The text leaves and plates were originally glued into paper wrappers, which were then glued into the portfolios; the glue has disintegrated and the sheets are now loose in the portfolios. The title- page is lacking. There is marginal dampstaing to many text leaves, with some dust-soiling at edges, and the portfolios are soiled. This is truly a de luxe edition, with printing and paper of the best quality, but the condition is problematic. However, the color plates are all fine. The set is offered as is. (Howes W79).         The butterflies of the Eastern United States and Canada, with special reference to New England.

Cambridge, published by the author, 1889. 3 volumes. 4to (280 x 200mm). pp. xl, 1958, with 3 portraits, 3 (2 folded) coloured maps and 89 lithographed plates, of which 36 are partly or fully coloured. Contemporary red half morocco, gilt ornamented spines. Samuel Hubbard Scudder (1837-1911) is to be regarded as one of the greatest systematic entomologists so far produced in America and as the founder of insect paleontology. He was a leading specialist in the orders of Orthoptera and Lepidoptera and described many new species. His most famous work is the above offered publication, which is still a standard work on the subject. "The plates in Scudder's book were produced by chromolithography. Trouvelot and Poujade were the artists for the original paintings, but the stones were prepared by a skilful lithographer, Thomas Sinclair. Ten different stones had to be used to accommodate all the colours in this plate and great care was needed to align and print all the colours' (P. Gilbert. Butterfly Collectors and Painters p. 50).

Das Differenzierungsproblem blieb also ungelöst. ENGLISH ODES

London: [Printed by Charles Whittingham at the Chiswick Press for] Kegan Paul, Trench, & Co, 1889. n. Hardcover. 165 x 105 mm (6 1/2 x 4 1/8"). xxi, [i], 259 pp. VERY PRETTY TURQUOISE CRUSHED MOROCCO, ELABORATELY GILT, BY RIVIERE & SON (stamp-signed on front doublure), covers with wide, swirling gilt frame featuring flowers and broad-leaf plants on a thick bed of stippling, raised bands, spine gilt in densely stippled compartments with tulip and acanthus leaves stamped in relief, INTRICATELY GILT MAROON MOROCCO DOUBLURES with large strapwork mandorla and curling azured leafy vines, maroon moiré silk endleaves, top edge gilt. With wood-engraved frontispiece with tissue guard. Spine slightly darkened, just a hint of wear to front joint, edges of leaves faintly browned, one leaf with light dampstain to fore margin, but all of these imperfections trivial, and otherwise a fine copy--clean and fresh internally, and in a glistening binding showing almost no signs of use. This is a fine piece of work by Riviere that is appropriately tooled in light of its contents, a collection of English odes selected by Edmund Gosse. Just as the works included here represent a traditional poetic form that finds its roots in the classical world, everything about the gilt embellishment on the binding suggests the archaic--from the acanthus leaves (so prevalent in the decoration of Medieval manuscripts) on the cover to the azured vegetation and strapwork panelling (so frequently seen in 16th century bindings) on the striking doublures. Although he never attended university, the English poet, author, and critic Sir Edmund William Gosse (1849-1928) began his career as assistant librarian at the British Museum. From 1884 to 1890, he lectured in English literature at Trinity College, Cambridge, and in the former year, his successful lecture tour in America earned him considerable fame. A collection of works by Spenser, Milton, Dryden, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Shelley, Keats, and others, "English Odes" was originally published in 1881, was met with approval, and was reprinted several times.
