        THE BLACK ARROW

1888. A Tale of the Two Roses. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1888. 8 pp undated ads. Original printed yellow wrappers. First Edition, published about six weeks before the London edition. Unlike the English one, the American edition is illustrated; it was also issued, at a higher price, in red cloth (no precedence). Stevenson wrote this entire novel in the Spring of 1883, for serial appearance in "Young Folks" (where TREASURE ISLAND had then just appeared). He wrote not only rapidly but also carelessly: proofreaders had to alert him to inconsistencies in his plot and characters. Stevenson derided the work as "tushery"; neither he nor his British publisher considered it worth publishing in book form. However, in 1887 the American publisher McClure sought it out for American serialization, which in turn prompted Scribner's to publish it, and then Cassell in London.~This is a good-to-very good copy, which for these fragile wrappers is quite collectible condition (some edge-wear, mainly at the foot of the spine and at a rear fore-corner). In our experience the American edition is scarcer than the English one, even on this side of the Atlantic -- especially in the yellow wrapper binding. Beinecke 480; Princeton 40 (copy 3).

The Journal of Indian Art, Vol. 2, Nos. 17-24

London: W. Griggs, 1888. Hardbound. Contents are VG or better, Front cover is stained, defective and warped, but could be restored by a skilled binder, minor wrinkling to first few sheets at top only. There is light off-setting from each colored plate onto the facing page (usually a blank page, so no text is marred). The volume is ex-library from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, with a stamp on the title page, a sticker on the back free end paper, and the remnant of a pocket inside the back cover. In addition, each color plate is library-stamped on the reverse. A personal bookplate of William Sturgis Bigelow, Boston surgeon and collector of Asian (especially Japanese) art. He donated his entire collection of 25,000 works of art to the MFA. The front hinge, although sturdy, is beginning to separate. There is a 4-inch vertical tear to one page, close to the hinge. No plates have tissue guards, but there is a loose tissue guard with bw illustration laid in at a random place (VG condition; could be framed). The contents are bound consecutively but without original covers, as various "chapters" of a book. The original paper covers are bound together, in order, at the back of the volume.. Green gilt embossed publisher's cloth. Unpaginated, and filled with over 100 breathtaking colored chromolithographs and other two-tone plates and images. The book contains 45 single color plates, almost all with multiple (2 or 3) images on each plate. There also are 3 double-page plates, so the total number of color IMAGES is about 130. The majority of the illustrations are bw or sepia duotone. A bit heavy at 6 pounds and will require extra postage. Scholarly literature on the decorative arts in India is scanty and mainly in learned journals. The Journal of Indian Art and Industries (1886-1916) is the most important and contains numerous pioneering studies. Original front and rear wraps from each issue are bound in at the rear. These covers have the contents of each issue printed on them. This is the exceedingly rare second volume of this seminal and Influential periodical on Indian arts. See article by Peter H. Hoffenberg entitled "John Lockwood Kipling, W. H. Griggs and The Journal of Indian Art and Industry" written in 2003 for a complete description of this periodical. He states: "...Kipling's and Buck's vision encouraged use of the latest photographic and reproductive innovations to ensure accurate and attractive illustrations of lasting quality. Griggs and his editorial staff took advantage of that encouragement and of the most current technology to produce exquisite color chromo- and photo-lithographs bound in leather. Black and white illustrations were also included...No doubt the publisher applied chromo-lithographic technologies from Britain and the continent, but the pages of the Journal also included illustrations resulting from innovative work in the heliogravure and collotype sections of India's own Revenue and Agriculture Department, particularly the offices devoted to the Survey of India. " The first 4 or 5 volumes of this publication seem exceedingly scarce.

Our Memories. Shadows of Old Oxford.

Oxford: Edited and printed by H. Daniel at The Daniel Press, 1888 - 1893. A full set of the First Series in a special presentation binding by Morley of Oxford. A complete set of the 20 numbers in the First Series, bound together with a title page. Pp. [4], 148, [12]. Printed in small pica roman leaded type. Sm. 4to., specially bound by Morley of Oxford in a decorated presentation binding from Cuthbert Shields to Charles Coleman Laing for Christmas 1894 in full blue morocco with gilt decoration and obrders on both covers, spine in compartments with borders and gilt decoration in each panel, gilt borderd and tooled turn-ins with marbled endpapers. Headcaps worn with rubbing and splitting to the joints but the binding is still strong. Madan refers to this as 'the most readable and amusing of the Daniel books'. It comprises twenty 'numbers' or sections written by senoir figures at Oxford University all of whom give fascinating personal reminiscences therby giving a real insight into nineteenth century Oxford. The numbers were issued separately between 1888 and 1893 and only for private circulation, each being printed in 100 to 110 copies. Here we have a complete set of the First Series. A second series was begun in 1895 but only two numbers were published. Cuthbert Shields, who had this bound, was an Oxford historian and eccentric, a Fellow of Corpus Christi College. He was originally named Robert Laing and spent some time in an asylum in Fulham in the 1870s. Shields presented this book to his relative Charles Coleman Laing, a stockbroker who was a keen angler, privately publishing a book about fishing on the Rivers Bure, Ant and Thurne in 1895.

The Jubilee History of Tasmania : with which is incorporated the Early History of Victoria, Biographical Sketches, & "Australian Representative Men". Copious papers by James Fenton.

Melbourne: Wells and Leavitt. [1888]. Two volumes. 4to. Each volume in four parts: [iv], 56, 94, 32, 69, 84, [84] & [iv], 50, 40, 156, [224]pp, many plates & illustrations. Original blue cloth over bevelled boards, gilt and black-stamped rules and title lettering on upper boards, lettered in gilt on spines, blind rules on lower boards; the corners a little rubbed but the covers are bright and clean. The gilt title on the spine of the first volume has been double-struck slightly off-centre, giving it a mildly out-of-focus look. The endpapers have been replaced; because of glue-staining from a previous covering rather than any fault with the binding, which is firm (this covering, though unfortunate in its effect on the endpapers, is responsible for the nice condition of the cloth). All edges gilt. The first few leaves in each volume have a little light spotting, otherwise nice and clean inside. A very good set. ***Effectively a Tasmanian edition of Leavitt's Jubilee History of Victoria and Melbourne - the Tasmanian content (by James Fenton) comprises about a third of the work. .

Lengthy autograph endorsement and a note signed ("L. P.") on a letter from Dr. G. Rauch. Lisbon, 8. IX. 1888.

1888. Small folio (267 x 210 mm). 3 pp. In the present letter, Dr. Rauch requests permission to visit Pasteur's laboratories to examine the discoveries made by one M. Gamaleia in hopes of making a contribution to his work and that of Pasteur. Rauch explains he has had extensive experience with diseases in warm countries, citing two cholera epidemics in Toulon and Algeria and proceeds to list his medical qualifications. He notes he would particularly like to participate in M. Gamaleia s experiments in the endemic field and feels confident that the Minister of the Navy will release him to do so, if accepted. At the foot of the third page of the letter, Pasteur replies in full from Arbois on 12 September 1888: "Honored Sir and Doctor, As soon as Monsieur Gamaleia has returned to Paris I will hasten to communicate your interesting letter to him. The latter is dated from Lisbon; are you returning on the Brest route, and when? Would you be able to come and see me on your way to Paris where I would perhaps have already returned? We could talk without too much inconvenience to you, about your wishes. Yours truly, L. P." (transl.). A further note in Pasteur's hand is found at the head of the first page of the letter: "To be shown to M. Gamaleia as soon as he arrives. L. P. 12 September 1888". - A fine letter demonstrating Pasteur s great willingness for collaboration between doctors and scientists.

Pedigree of the Family of Darwin

      H. Furnham Burke, London 1888 - Original, unrestored, cloth boards. Large (4to)thin volume -285mm x 220mm (11" x 9"), 23pp, original photograph of Darwin and 8 plates of coats of arms/bookplates. 1st and only Edition. [Freeman: A163]. A sound, unrestored copy of this very rare Darwin item. Some minor wear to extremities of the binding. Cloth lightly soiled only, with no serious marks. Gilt bright. Internally very good. Browing to title page and a light tide mark to the upper margin of the frontispiece. Otherwise excellent throughout. A presentable copy. One of only 60 printed. Sir Henry Farnham Burke, (1859 – 1930) was a long serving Irish officer of arms at the College of Arms in London. He was a son of Sir Bernard Burke (who was Ulster King of Arms from 1853 until his death in 1892) and grandson of John Burke (1787 - 1848) the original compiler of the Peerage and Baronetage, the compilation of which Bernard took over. Henry Burke was appointed Rouge Croix Pursuivant of Arms in Ordinary in 1880. In 1887, Burke was promoted to the office of Somerset Herald of Arms in Ordinary. On 26 October 1911, Burke was promoted to Norroy King of Arms to replace Sir William Henry Weldon. In 1913 he was given the additional appointment of Genealogist of the Order of the Bath. On 22 January 1919, he was promoted to the office of Garter Principal King of Arms on the death of Sir Alfred Scott-Gatty. He held this office until his own death in 1930. This book, the first and only ever full pedigree of Charles Darwin's family has never been reprinted and comes up for sale very rarely. A facsimile edition was printed by R.B. Freeman in 1984 and in his Preface he outlines the book's scarcity. "There is a copy in the British Library and another in the Bodleian Library at Oxford, but the Cambridge University Library, the greatest repository of Darwin Literature in the world, only holds it in photocopy. In America, the Library of Congress National Union Catalogue records only one copy, their own. No detailed seach of other British libraries has been made*, but no copy has ever appeared in Book Auction Records and I have never seen a copy offered for sale by a bookseller." COPAC currently shows the British Library copy and the Bodleian copy (Oxford), along with a copy now held at Cambridge (acquired since 1984?) and one further copy at the National Library of Wales (just 4 in total).         Meiji Kaisei Tokyo Zenzu. (Revised Meiji Map of Tokyo).

Koshodo. Tokyo. Meiji 21. 1888. - Copperplate engraved map with woodblock color, 20 x 28 1/2 inches on sheet 20 1/2 x 29 inches, folding to 6 3/4 x 3 1/2 inches. Several small repaired worm holes, a few without repairs, light wear, overall clean and bright. A particularly appealing Meiji Japanese map of Tokyo, apparently geared to the tourist trade as well as to the Japanese visitor, with names of the districts marked on the map and the legend in both kanji and English. There is an unusual inset (6 x 8 1/2 inches) of Yokohama at upper left. The map is surrounded by small vignette scenes. Most interestingly, contained within the yellow border between the images and the map is the description (in Japanese) for a 4 day walking tour of Tokyo. To the right of the compass rose is a schedule for trains leaving from Ueno and Maibashi. The inset at lower left corner shows the train schedule Tokyo - Yokohama, and the price for each stage of the journey. The inset at the lower right corner is a listing of municipal and rural districts. Beneath the map at lower right is the publisher Koshodo, followed by the characters for copper engraving (dosen). A wealth of detailed information! The Imperial Palace is misspelled as 'Emperil Palace.'

ROBERT ELSMERE. In Three Volumes (Fine Original Condition)

Smith, Elder, 1888. Ward, Mrs. Humphry. ROBERT ELSMERE. In Three Volumes. London: Smith, Elder, 1888. First Edition. A NEAR FINE set in original publisher's dark blue-green fine-diaper cloth, only the slightest wear to the extremities, simply superb for this title. ROBERT ELSMERE, now mostly familiar only to the Victorian Fiction specialist, was one of the single most important novels about religious faith and doubt published in the late Victorian era. It presented an uncanny and minute psychological analysis of its central character, creating a vision of Christianity based on social concern and not pure theology. Mary Augusta Ward (1851-1920) is sometimes chided by those with rear view mirrors for being part of an anti-suffrage movement in her later years but writers of the times such as Thomas Hardy recognized her subversive pro-woman subtext and she was much admired. Her charitable work was equally celebrated; she is not a writer to be forgotten. To quote John Carter in his landmark 1947 exhibition catalogue: "It is hard nowadays to realize how deeply Mrs. Ward's novel stirred the thoughtful public of the day." We've never seen a nicer copy of this important High Spot, one of the triumphant achievements of Victorian Women's Fiction and, in terms of faith questioned, one of the most important novels of the times.         Eigenh. Brief mit U. ("P. Verlaine" und "P. V."). Paris, 9. IV. 1888.

1888. 2 2/3 SS. auf Doppelblatt. 8vo. Venez donc me voir. J'y suis tous les Mercredis n'importe quand. P.V.

Adam, and others, double-page lithographed map after and by J. Bartholomew on japan paper. 1 vols. Folio. A book of almost legendary beauty, rarity, and importance, recounting the author's adventures at Camp Harmony on the Restigouche River in New Brunswick, and drawing upon his long experience fishing the river. Dean Sage's contributions to angling literature are few in number but profoundly influential: "Ten Days' Sport on Salmon Rivers", published in the Atlantic in 1875, is a classic account. His library catalogue (2 vols., 1896, 1904) remains an important document in the history of angling bibliography and collecting. Sage's section on "The Atlantic Salmon," in Salmon and Trout (1902), is a synthesis of his own first hand knowledge as a fisherman and his assessment of the extensive literature. The Ristigouche and Its Salmon Fishing remains the work for which Sage is best known. One of the pinnacles of nineteenth century fishing book design and production, with the notable provenance of financier Jay Gould. Sage, who lived in Albany, would have known Gould from equestrian circles, as both men maintained stables of trotting horses and bred Morgan horses.
