        Le rêve

First edition.Half deal-colored shagreen over marbled paper boards, spine in six compartments, blindruled fillets to bands, marbled pastedowns and endpapers; printed library stamp of Julia-Alphonse Daudet to first endpaper.Inscribed by Emile Zola to Alphonse Daudet.A little foxing.Whether they'd met before or not, Zola only really discovered Daudet in 1873 after reading his Monday Tales:  "a continuous enchantment", of "irreproachable purity", as he wrote in L'Avenir National. These short stories inspired by the Franco-Prussian war affected Zola deeply: "All the disasters of 1870 are here, in six pages." A foreshadowing, according to Henri Mitterand, of Evenings at Médan and looking even further, of The Downfall (cf. Zola, volume II, p. 157).From this initial article on, Zola maintained a stormy but indefatigable friendship with Daudet, based on mutual admiration, to which their numerous studies in the press, published all throughout their lives, bear witness. From then on, the two Provencal writers formed a literary circle around their mutual publisher Charpentier, which included the older Flaubert, Goncourt and Turgenev, and which was to dominate the French novel in the second half of the century. Their "dinners for five", initially known as "the booed writers' dinners" in reference to their debacles in the theatre, formed the basis of a fidelity and solidarity which, despite being shot through by artistic rivalry and ideological disagreements, lasted their entire lives.Beyond friendship, there was a real brotherhood in arms that united these two authors, for whom literature was much more than an aesthetic adventure. As Zola noted in his homage to Daudet:"If I had to assign a definite place to Daudet, I would say he was at the very head of the phalanx that had fought the good fight for truth in this second half of the century. The triumph of this century will be having marched towards truth by the heaviest labor any century has produced. And Daudet was with us, among the hardiest and bravestHis workis part of our generation's huge ongoing search, and will stand as a decisive witness - the logical and solid follow-up to the social testimony Stendhal and Balzac, Flaubert and the Goncourts, have left behind." A number of writers in their turn reinforced this need for truth, which gave writing a mission, that of constraining literature into adhering to the modern world and bringing forth its raw material.Aware of this responsibility, several of the five formed their own circles. For Zola, this consisted of the Evenings at Médan, while for Goncourt and Daudet, it was le Grenier and later the Académie. But the true heirs of this school of modernity were above all to be Proust and Céline. The first was direct heir to Daudet, while the second was the spiritual son of The Drunkard and The Downfall. This struggle for influence between Zola and his peers was not without its consequences. A year before the publication of Rêve [The Dream], the 'Manifesto of the Five', a virulent anti-Zola tract written by some of the regulars of le Grenier and most likely inspired by Goncourt and Daudet, must have got the better of their friendship. It was with a friendly inscription in La Terre [The Earth], the novel attacked in the pamphlet, that Zola evinced to Daudet his desire for a reconciliation (cf. Mitterrand, v. II, p. 861). A few letters and dinners later, this second friendly inscription in Le Rêve really marks the end of the final quarrel between the two writers. Ten years later Zola, final witness of the naturalist adventure they had begun together, wrote for his "dearly beloved friend's" eulogy a moving homage to "the writer who worked so hard, the man who suffered so much, doubly my brother by grace of genius and of pain!"      Charpentier Paris 1888 11x18cm relié

Reports of the Meetings of the British Association for the Advancement of Science, 1887-98

1888 - The reports of the annual meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science from 1887 to 1898, missing the year 1892, attractively bound in half calf. The British Association for the Advancement of Science was founded in 1831 by Reverend William Harcourt, following some dissatisfaction with the conservative ethos of the Royal Society. It was modelled on the German Gesellschaft Deutscher Naturforscher und Artze. The first meeting was held at York, with numerous scientific papers being presented in the following days. From that time an annual meeting was held at a different place, chosen during the previous meeting. These summaries of the meetings, along with the scientific papers presented and the topics of seminars and lectures etc. , were generally published the following year. Included are numeroustables, diagrams, and drawings. Many tables et alia are fold-outs. At the rear of each volume is a separately paginated List of Officers, Council, and Members. The main body of each volume reproduces the huge variety of papers and hypotheses presented at the meetings. An unparalled collation of late 19th century science, these work allow the reader to follow the development of scientific thinking at what was the contemporary cutting edge. Collated: no precise collations available but appears complete. Condition: In half calf with gilt titles and detailing to the spines. The 1896 volume has the original cloth covers bound in at the back. Externally the volumes are smart, though rubbed at the extremities and with some fading to the spines. The 1893 and 1891 volumes have some marking to the boards. All volumes have a personal bookplate to the front pastedown. Internally, all volumes are very mildly age-toned but otherwise generally clean. Generally firmly bound. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED [Attributes: Hard Cover]

(Bogousslavsky, Following Charcot, pp.27-28)

Bilder-Atlas zu Mekka. Haag, Nijhoff, 1888-1889.

1888. Folio (284 x 378 mm). One volume of plates: 4 chromolithogr. plates (conjoined as 2), 6 (1 double-sized) toned lithogr. plates, and 65 mounted photographs on a total of 40 plates; 1 letterpress leaf of contents. Contemp. half cloth portfolio with cover title. Without the two text volumes; instead includes the English translation in its first edition: Mekka in the Latter Part of the 19th Century. Leyden & London, E. J. Brill & Luzac, 1931. 8vo. VI, 309, (3) pp. With 20 half-tone plates, folding plan of Mecca, and plan of the Haram. Original blue cloth. Remarkable set issued in merely 100 copies: the rare plate volume to accompany the author's two-volume "Mekka" but usually lacking from the text volumes. (Here, these are present in the first English edition.) A respected Dutch orientalist and scholar, Snouck Hurgronje was a key figure in the early history of the photography of Mecca, one of the first non-Arab photographers of the Hijaz. In 1884, Hurgronje was given leave of absence from his teaching post in Leiden in order to travel in Arabia. After an initial five months in Jeddah, he moved on to Mecca, arriving there in February 1885. Hurgronje stayed in the Holy City for approximately six months, during which time he converted to Islam, adopted the name Abdul Ghaffar and generally immersed himself in local customs and traditions. However, in August 1883, Hurgronje was accused of attempting to steal the Tayma Stone and was banished. On his return to Leiden, he published numerous works on Mecca and its inhabitants, including this important photographic monograph. The images, taken by himself and an Arabic physician, are among the earliest to show Mecca and its pilgrims. - Stamp of the "Indische genootschap" (Indies Society of the Netherlands) on index leaf and upper cover of portfolio. An edge tear to the mount of plate XXXVI. The vintage photographs, much sought as the earliest photographic documents of the city, its dignitaries and its pilgrims, are preserved in perfect condition. Macro 1239, omitting mention of the Atlas (& 1238 for the English text). Henze V, 177. Dinse 443.

The Gospels and Acts in the Low (or Bazaar) Malay dialect of Malay: The text is in Roman character and is based on Hillebrandus Cornelius Klinkert's 1863 New Testament with some changes in orthography. Malay is an Austronesian language spoken in Malaya. The first printing of any portion of the Bible in Malay was the 1629 printing of the New Testament in High Malay. The first printing of any portion of the Bible in Low Malay was the ca. 1815 printing of Matthew's Gospel, with the Medhurst and Lenting1835 translation being the first N.T. in that dialect. Klinkert's fresh translation of 1863 was the second. Provenance: The Howell Bible Collection, Pacific School of Religion (properly released).         Grass of Parnassus

London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1888. A Fine Signed Captain Gladstone Binding GLADSTONE, Captain C.E., binder. LANG, Andrew. Grass of Parnassus. Rhymes Old and New. London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1888. First edition, Large Paper copy limited to one hundred and thirteen copies of which this is No. 76. Octavo ( 8 7/16 x 5 3/8 inches; 214 x 136 mm.). [2], xii, [1, Grass of Parnassus], [1, blank], [1]-124, [1, The last Chance], [1, blank], [1, The last Chance], [1, printers imprint] pp. Bound by Captain Gladstone ca. 1900 (stamp-signed "C.E.G." on front turn-in) in full dark blue crushed levant morocco, covers richly hand-tooled in gilt with an all-over vine and flower design, each cover featuring four 'Parnassian' flowers inlaid in green morocco and decorated in gilt. Smooth spine with similar gilt tooling and lettering, gilt ruled board-edges, wide and elaborate gilt vine and leaf design turn-ins, gray paper liners and end-leaves, top edge gilt. A very fine example of a 'signed' Captain C.E. Gladstone binding. Captain Charles Elsden Gladstone, RN, (1855.1919). Very little is known about Captain Gladstone other than he was born in Salford, Lancashire and lived in London, Hertfordshire and then Broadstairs in Kent. According to the 1891 census of England & Wales his occupation was listed as "Commander Royal Navy" and then in 1901 as "Commander of H.M.S. Eagle". We believe that he, like the Irish finisher Sir Edward Sullivan (who signed his books "E.S. Aurifex"), had his books bound by a local bookbinder - possibly John Smith of Maidstone, and then did the hand-tooling (finishing) himself. Apparently he was also a talented photographer - there are mentions of him in The British Journal of Photography (1889), the Journal of the Microscopic Society (1893) and he was an officer of the Lantern Society from 1890-93. His bindings with their very distinctive decorations are very often, but not always, signed in gilt "C.E.G." on the front turn-in. "Many of the verses and translations in this volume were published first in Ballads and Lyrics of Old France (1872). Though very sensible that they have the demerits of imitative and even of undergraduate rhyme, I print them again because people I like have liked them. The rest are of different dates, and lack (though doubtless they need) the excuse of having been written, like some of the earlier pieces, curing College Lectures. I would gladly have added to this volume what other more or less serious rhymes I have written, but circumstances over which I have no control have bound them up with Ballades, and other toys of that sort. It may be as well to repeat in prose, what has already been said in verse, that Grass of Parnassus, the pretty Autumn flower, grows in the marshes at the foot of the Muses' Hill, and other hills, not at the top by any means. Several of the versions from the Greek Anthology have been published in the Fortnightly Review, and the sonnet on Colonel Burnaby appeared in Punch. These, with pieces from other serials, are reprinted by the courteous permission of the Editors. The verses that were published in Ballads and Lyrics, and in Ballades and Verses Vain (Charles Scribner's Sons, New York), are marked in the contents with an asterisk." (Preface).

[Schwabenkrieg] Supposita pictura regie maiestatis Helvetiorumque conflictum insinuat quo quisque loco victoria positus sit terga prebuerit hosti oculari demonstratione in qua quicque Helvetiorum loco S. Lra. ppnoitur. Reproduktion der Schwabenkrieg- oder Bodenseekarte des Monogrammisten PW (PPW) in Kupferlichtdruck. Hrsg.: Internationale Chalkographische Gesellschaft - International Chalcographical Society - Société Internationale Chalcographique.

[Berlin, Reichsdruckerei, ca. 1888]. . - Selten.

AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED ON HOUSE OF COMMONS LETTERHEAD, and manuscript leaf from his novel "Lady Lee's Widowhood"

[London, U.K.]: 22 June 1888. - [London, U.K.]: 22 June 1888. 1888. Very good. - Letter: small octavo [7-3/8 inches high by 4-3/4 inches wide]. 128 words penned in black ink on all 4 sides of a folded, 4-sided sheet of House of Commons letterhead with the Commons seal at the top of the first side. Signed "Yours sincerely / Edward Hamley". There is occasional very light foxing to the letterhead & 2 pieces of mounting tape adhere to the right margin of the 4th side where the letter has been removed from an album. Folded once for mailing. Very good.Manuscript leaf: small quarto [9 inches high by 7 inches wide]. 83 words penned in black ink on one side of a sheet of cream watermarked paper. Folded 3 times with slight darkening down the top end of 1 vertical fold. 2 small pieces of tape adhere to the verso of the sheet where it has been removed from an album. Very good. The letter addressed to "My dear Mrs. Ford" expresses his regret that he missed her when he called on her. He congratulates her on becoming "the Mistress of Pencarrow", her family's estate and her childhood home. He goes on to complain about the House of Commons workload, though "we are not quite such slaves as we were last year." The manuscript leaf is from Hamley's novel "Lady Lee's Widowhood" and is headed "Chap. II." The page, which ends in mid-sentence describes the morning toiletries of two women characters. The first sentence of the extract reads: "Rosa, constitutionally an early riser, used to be always up before Orelia in the morning, until the latter took it into her head to have a shower-bath fitted up in the closet that opened from their room."Sir Edward Bruce Hamley [1824-1893] served in the Crimean War. He was professor of military history at the Staff College, Sandhurst from 1858 to 1877 and was Commandant of the College from 1870-1877. He was chief of the commission for the delimitation of the Balkan and Armenian frontiers [1879-80] and commanded a division in the Egyptian war of 1882. He was promoted to General in 1890. Hamley was Member of Parliament for Birkenhead from 1885 until his death in 1893.In addition to works on the Crimean War and his military manual "The Operations of War", Hamley was a short-story writer and poet, a translator of French verse, and the author of a novel "Lady Lee's Widowhood". He was a valued contributor to Blackwood's Magazine, wherein the novel first appeared in 1853. It was subsequently published in two volumes by William Blackwood and Sons in 1854. [Sadleir 1103; Wolff 2949].Both the letter and the manuscript come from the autograph collection of Mrs. Mary Ford, widow of Richard Ford who wrote the popular "Handbook for Travellers in Spain". The autograph collection [known as the Pencarrow Collection] was formed from the 1850s onwards, largely by Mary Ford in her long period of widowhood. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
