Reichenbachia. Orchids Illustrated and Described. Imperial Edition. First and Second Series.

London: H. Sotheran and Co., and F. Sander & Co. of St. Albans, 1888-1894. Four vols., imperial folio, 675 x 495 mm, illustrated with 192 chromolithographs mounted on thick card, most finished by hand, with text in English, French, and German. Volume one bound in contemporary deluxe full crushed brown morocco, gilt extra on covers and spines, volumes 2-4 bound in three-quarter brown morocco by Bumpus of London. Some minor staining or discoloration to boards. Some foxing throughout, mostly on the mounts. Series 1, vol. 2, plate 49 has a corner of the board missing. Series 2, vol. 2, plates 50, 51, 52, 53, and 54 are reattached to their mounts. The rare "Imperial Edition", of which only 100 sets were made, each volume weighing over 40 pounds (18.15 kilos). One of the two monumental works devoted to orchids published in the nineteenth century, the other being Bateman's The Orchidaceae of Mexico and Guatemala, which was illustrated with only 40 plates, and is not nearly as rare. In terms of size and scale Sander's work is to flower books what the elephant folio edition of Audubon is to bird books. Henry Sander was born in Bremen in 1847 and moved in 1867 to England where he worked in nurseries in Forest Hill before starting his own independent business in St. Albans. With the immense success of his nursery Sander felt encouraged to publish a massive set of orchid illustrations. In 1885 he commissioned the artist Henry Moon to produce life-sized illustrations, which were printed in coloured lithography by his own firm's presses. Moon was responsible for a majority of the 192 plates, with W.H. Fitch, A.H. Loch, George Hansen, Charles Storer, J.Watton, and J.L. Macfarlane contributing the remainder of the plates, some not completed until 1890. In the introduction Sander explains that "the growing popularity of orchids, and the ever-increasing demand for information respecting them, is sufficient reason for issuing the present work. It will be our aim to represent truthfully the natural aspect of the plants, which will be drawn life size... Some of the plant portraits will be coloured by lithography, others will be hand painted when found expedient. It is our intention to illustrate all classes of the orchid family." "By modern standards the work was of a monstrous size... Where the orchid was concerned, Sander never spared himself, but even so, the care lavished on Reichenbachia still provokes astonishment. Apart from the elegance of Moon's drawings, the technical standards would have been a tribute to any large printing house. The blocks were hand-made, out of wood; and the chromolithographs were produced by the use of as many as twenty inks. The cost to Sander was enormous, and it is said to have been well over £7000... It is no wonder that Sander often remarked in later years that the project almost ruined him" (A. Swinson, Frederick Sander: the Orchid King, 1970). PROVENANCE: Lionel Phillips and Cynthia Johnson, with their ex-libris. BM(NH) IV, 1800. Great Flower Books (1990) 135. Nissen, BBI 1722. Stafleu and Cowan 10.219 (4).

A RUSSIAN PRINCESS AND A RUSSIAN GHOST STORY. TWO HISTORICAL AND PERSONAL NARRATIVES DEPICTIVE OF RUSSIAN ARISTOCRATIC SOCIETY AT THE CLOSE OF THE LAST AND THE COMMENCEMENT AND MIDDLE OF THE PRESENT CENTURY ..

London: The Hansom Cab Publishing Company, n.d. [1888?].. Octavo, pp. [i-xiii] xiv-xvii [xviii] [19] 20-208 [209-216: blank] [note: first four and last four leaves are blanks], inserted frontispiece (portrait of the author), original pictorial blue bevel-edged cloth, front and spine panels stamped in black, white and gold, top edge untrimmed, slate coated endpapers. Probable first hardcover edition of the combined text. Collects two novellas. The second novella was first published in 1873 as CHRISTMAS TALES FOR CHRISTMAS CHARITIES. N0. 2. TWO NIGHTS IN A HAUNTED HOUSE IN RUSSIA. Locke (A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 215), gives the publication date of this present edition as "about 1888." The copies at the British Library and Cambridge University also have "Fifty-First Thousand" on their title pages. The Eaton Collection at UC Riverside has two copies, both labeled "Fiftieth Thousand" at top of their title pages, one in original wrappers, one rebound with another book. The dating of the book seems to derive from a statement at the bottom of the frontispiece, "From a photograph by Karoly, Leamington, 1888." The first novella in this present volume, "A Russian Princess," is a story of crime, preceded by a brief statement by the author averring its authenticity as a found manuscript. The second is as its title indicates, a haunted house ghost story. A postscript by the author admits the dark tone of his two tales but makes clear his good wishes towards Russia, a country with which he was quite familiar. We believe this is the first edition in hardcover (of which 1000 copies were printed), preceded by the paperbound printing or printings. It also appears to be the first edition to print Turnerelli's postscript, pp. [191]-208. Turnerelli's two ghost novellas, A NIGHT IN A HAUNTED HOUSE IN IRELAND (1859) and TWO NIGHTS IN A HAUNTED HOUSE IN RUSSIA (1873) were among the best known Victorian ghost stories, and both were highly regarded by Charles Dickens. Bleiler (1978), p. 196 (citing date of 1890 but "not verified"). Reginald 14345. Spine a bit leaned, cloth spotted and rubbed, inner rear hinge repaired, a good copy of a very scarce book. (#148001)

Expéditions scientifiques du Travailleur et du Talisman pendant les années 1880, 1881, 1882, 1883. Poissons.

Paris, G. Masson, 1888. 4to (33.0 x 25.3 cm). Half title and title page, [i], 406 pp.; 28 fine lithographed plates. Contemporary half calf over marbled boards. Spine with four gilt-bordered bands, gilt ornamental bands at head and foot, and gilt title. Speckled edges.l The ichthyological results of a famous deep-sea expedition to the northeastern Atlantic and Mediterranean. The paddle steamer Travailleur sailed on July 17, 1880 from Bayonne and surveyed the Bay of Biscay. She returned to port on August 1st. Among the scientists on board were Alphonse Milne-Edwards (who leaded the scientific expedition), Léopold de Folin (1817-1896), who wrote a narrative of the expedition and described several new molluscs, and the ichthyologist Léon Vaillant (1834-1914). The main objective of this short survey was to test the equipment. Longer expeditions followed to the same region (1881, 1882), the coastal region of Portugal (1881, 1882), the Mediterranean (1881) and the eastern Atlantic from Bayonne to the Canary Islands (1882). In 1883 the Travailleur was replaced by the Talisman, a more modern and larger vessel, which was used on a final expedition to the Sargasso Sea. The fishes collected were studied by Vaillant, who published the results in this volume, which was the first of a larger series of zoological publications. Because of the extensive dredgings in deeper water, many new and undescribed species were caught, and illustrated here for the first time. Small old library stamp on first blank recto, half-title and title. Some very light, mostly marginal foxing on some text leaves and a few the plates; most plates, however, clean. A very good copy. Dean II, p. 571; Nissen ZBI, 4209.

l'Ornement polychrome.

Paris, Firmin-Didot, 1888. In two volumes. Folio (40.3 x 28.7 cm). Titlepages in red and black, halftitles, 60, [vi] pp. (introduction, index, etc.), and 220 (volume I: 100; volume 2: 120) chromolithographed plates, many hightened with silver and gold, each with unnumbered explanatory text pages with numerous engraved headpieces and line illustrations. Uniform contemporary black half morocco over polychrome marbled boards. Spines with five raised and gilt-stippled bands; compartments rich gilt with floral patterns, gilt titles and volume numbers. Marbled endpapers.l An extremely fine copy of this wonderful work on polychromatic art and design. Copies are almost always found incomplete (the plates are very attractive to book breakers), or in different and/or poor bindings. This one is superb. Some earlier editions have only 100 plates, with 2,000 figures. The captions are in English, French, and German. The text is in French. Some light foxing to titles, as always, plates bright and mostly clean. A real treasure.

Bau- und Kunstdenkmäler Thüringens. 7 Abteilungen (41 Lieferungen) in 14 Bänden. Vollständige Reihe des gesuchten thüringischen Inventars.

Jena, Gustav Fischer, 1888-1917.. Quart.

Binding title:] Recueil d'estampes Collaert Wierix and Galle.[Antwerp], Adriaen Collaert, Antonius Wierix II, Theodore Galle, Cornelis Pinssen & anonymous, [ca. 1595-ca. 1610]. 9 print series plus 5 separate prints. Large 4to album with mostly 8vo prints. An album containing 7 complete devotional print series (together 109 prints), a (complete?) set of 3 town fortification plans (each with a madonna and child and patron saint or other local saints), 5 portraits and 6 illustrations from a book, making 123 engraved prints in total. Dark green gold-tooled morocco (ca. 1890), gilt edges.

      - John Thomson, Descr. cat. lib. Clarence H. Clark, Philadelphia, 1888, item 423 (pp. 255-256: the present album, with descriptions of ads 1-9). A remarkable collection of very rare print series and a few equally rare separate prints, all dating from the period ca. 1595-ca. 1610, mostly by Adriaen Collaert (ca. 1560-1618), but also with series by Antonius Wierix II (ca. 1555/59-1604) and Theodore Galle (1571-1633). For most of the prints, the literature mentions no variant states of the plates, but when variant states are noted in the literature they are all in the earliest states and those with no known variant states appear from their watermarks to be very early printings. Ads 4, 5, 6 and 9, and possibly 4 of the portraits in ad 8 may be unique, and ad 1 is the second copy recorded. With the engraved bookplate on paste-down. With one portrait mounted on an older piece of paper, with the mounting paper and the other prints tipped in, with only the left edges pasted to the album leaves. The binding is slightly worn at the hinges and extremities, with a few minor scuff marks, but still very good. A remarkable collection of ca. 1600 Antwerp print series, almost half with no other complete set known. The album contains the following 10 groups of prints:Ad 1) Virginis Mariae vita. .Antwerp, Adriaen Collaert, [ca. 1600]. Small 8vo (14.5 x 8.5 cm). Title-page printed in red and black. Later marbled wrappers.

      - Ferchl, p. 224; KVK & WorldCat (1 copy); cf. Brüning 1331; Ferguson, Some early treatises on technological chemistry (1888), pp. 24-34 . Second copy located of the 1660 edition of a popular and influential practical manual by Andreas Helmreich, on the preparation of black, coloured and metallic writing ink and dyes (the metallic inks especially for writing on wood), the etching of marble and metals (copper, brass, tin, iron and steel, with special reference to etching armour and weapons), gilding and silvering (including the gilding of the edges of books), colouring parchment, paper and feathers, making sealing wax and glue, and other materials used for art and writing, including recipes and minute details of the preparation of the materials. Books of a similar nature with the title Kunstbüchlein appeared already in 1499 and reappeared in a new form by 1535, but Ferguson notes that Helmriech's work owes little or nothing to them, has only two or three recipes similar to those in Boltz's 1547 Illuminirbuch and is largely original. All editions are rare and we have located only one other copy of the present 1660 edition, in the library of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. With some minor restorations to the gutter margins of the title-page and with several small stains, and the whole somewhat dog-eared, very slightly browned and with occasional foxing and a marginal chip at the head of the dedication (perhaps removing an owner's name?), but the book is complete including even the 2 final blank leaves, and nearly all the leaves are in good condition. A rare and important work, giving a detailed account of the preparation of inks and of etching, as practiced in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Covers lightly rubbed and surface soiled with minor bruising at spine tips and lower corners of upper board; endpapers lightly tone. No annotation or inscriptions. An unusually bright copy. Queens Quorum number 13. ".the thin, fragile book with the 'rainbow' stamping which is seldom found even in the so-called complete collections of Eden Phillpott's work. Modern readers will undoubtedly agree that My Adventures in the Flying Scotsman is an old fashioned tale of theft and attempted murder, relying a bit too strongly on the long arm of coincidence, but peopled with richly Victorian characters caught in the fell clutch of melodramatic circumstance" Q Q No, 13. Published in several editions, the plates are extremely attractive. Studer (1840-1904) was born in New York City, and would become a printer and lithographer. He was also an ornithologist, and seems to have been active in this field in the Columbus, Ohio area after the Civil War. However, it is believed that the plates were based on drawings by Theodore Jasper. The plates while very attractive, are believed to be designed to help with identification. Size of book will require extra postage. online Cornell library website. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Two albums of original botanical watercolours. 2 volumes. Large folio (500 x 390mm), c. 1790-1820.

Comprising: GRASSES, 1 page manuscript index and 99 original watercolours mounted within watercolour borders & CLASS V. ORDER 2 TO 6, 1 page manuscript index and 84 original watercolours mounted within watercolour borders. Contemporary uniformly Russia, blind-tooled decorative borders around blind-stamped central coat-of-arms of the Earl of Aylesford to covers, gilt greek key turn-ins, uniformly rebacked, richly gilt decorated spines in 7 compartments, with red gilt lettered label, gilt edges. An interesting pair of volumes featuring highly accomplished and detailed watercolours by Louisa, Countess of Aylesford, from a set of twenty-seven volumes originally sold from the Aylesford Library at Christie's in 1888. She was born at Longleat in Wiltshire, the eldest daughter of Thomas Thynne, 1st Marquess of Bath, she married Heneage Finch, 4th Earl of Aylesford. The volume on grasses has a caption below each image giving the English and Latin nomenclature of the plants, the exact date as well as in most cases the name Packington (the Aylesford estate at Packington) where the plants were probably collected and drawn. The second volume pictures plants as Chenopodium, Gentiana, Pimpinella, Oenanthe, Caucalis, as well as a number of Umbelliferous plants. The fine drawings show Louisa to have been not only an accomplished draughtswoman but also a keen student of botany. Two mounts empty and some sheets missing from the numerical sequences.

        A New English Dictionary on Historical Principles;

Oxford: Clarendon Press,, 1888–1928. Founded Mainly on the Materials Collected by the Philological Society. Edited by James H. Murray. 10 volumes bound in 20, large quarto (340 x 263 mm). Publisher's dark red straight-grain quarter morocco, red cloth sides, titles and university crest to spines gilt, top edges gilt, dark red endpapers. Typical light variation to spines, a couple headcaps expertly restored; an excellent, handsomely bound set. First edition in book form of "the greatest treasure-house of any language in the world, unrivalled for its comprehensiveness and ease of consultation as well as for its reliability and scholarship" (PMM). "The scheme of 'a completely new English Dictionary' was conceived in 1858… Herbert Coleridge and after him Dr. F. J. Furnivall, were the first editors. Their work, which covered 20 years, consisted mainly in the collection of materials, and it was not until Dr. J. A. H. Murray took the matter up in 1878 that the preparation of the Dictionary began to take active form…. The essential feature of the Dictionary is its historical method, by which the meaning and form of the words are traced from their earliest appearance on the basis of an immense number of quotations, collected by more than 800 voluntary workers. The Dictionary contains a record of 414,825 words, whose history is illustrated by 1,827,306 quotations" (Drabble, 728). The Dictionary was originally issued in fascicles which were then gathered into book form. After Murray's death the editing was entrusted to his colleagues Henry Bradley, W. A. Craigie, and C. T. Onions. "The scale of the OED was astonishing by comparison with that of any English dictionary published before the end of the nineteenth century. Murray had revolutionized the whole process by which the English language was mapped" (ODNB). These volumes are titled "The Oxford Dictionary" to the spine, whereas the trade binding was bound as, "A New English Dictionary". The University Press had used "The Oxford Dictionary" as the title in its catalogues and advertisements from at least 1904. The dictionary was officially renamed "The Oxford English Dictionary" in 1933 on the publication of the first supplement, edited by W. A. Craigie and C. T. Onions.

JEWISH HYMNS FOR SABBATH-SCHOOLS AND FAMILIES

Cincinnati : Bloch Pub. Co.. 1888. Hardback. Period Boards with Original Paper Wrappers on Cover. 8vo. 55 pages ; 19 cm. In Hebrew and English. A scarce 1888 edition of Simon Hecht's book of “Jewish Hymns for Sabbath Schools and Families. ” "The ready sale of my hymn-book proved that my opinion of the influence of Music in religious schools was correct. Since the first edition appeared this subject has been repeatedly discussed and an offer was made by the Union of American Hebrew Congregations of a prize for the best Jewish Hymn-book for the use of Sabbath Schools. I have done my best to meet this want more completely in this edition. If on examination it shall be proven that some one else has done better, I shall be sorry for myself, but very glad for the schools in whose interest I have toiled. The favorable reception of my first edition has induced me to spare no pains nor expense to improve and enlarge the present one [to fifty-two English and German hymns with music] ... As my chief design has been to meet the wants of the children who need easy and pleasant melodies I have avoided all musical pomp and sought to keep the tunes within the range of their voices ... The reader will not only find here pieces of a purely religious character, but also such as treat Universal Moral Subjects. I also thought it proper to insert some patriotic hymns, for while we are Jews, we are also Citizens of America finding beneath the protection of stars and stripes equal rights and liberty with all ... (Other Editions Include…) Cincinnati: Bloch, 1888 [Wachs #376]…” (Goldman, 289) OCLC lists no copies of this edition worldwide. Paper browning slightly, and cover has some wear.
