      Libraire de Firmin-didot Cie, Paris 1888 - FIRST EDITION, first printing. Six volume set complete. The title page gives a mere hint of the opulence of the plates in this work. The statement that there are 500 plates, of which 300 are chromolithographic color with metallic accents, and another 200 plates in two color cameo, do not begin to give the reader any indication of the treasure trove of visual information that is about to be encountered. Many of the plates fold out to double size. The vast diversity of different clothing sttyles used throughout history, and in all geographical areas of the world are illustrated. From ancient Egypt to Medieval, Samurai controlled, Japan, and from Renaissance France to the harems of the Ottoman Empire, this is just the beginning of the long list of styles and cultures that are shown, described, and catalogued. Overall the condition is virtually mint. It wouyld be hard to imagine a finer set. The tips of the corners of the boards are rubbed, minor scuffs to the leather here and there. Top edge gilt. Contents all in excellent condition, especially the plates which appear bright and colorful. Text in French. A considerable number of the plates are printed with the use of gold and silver metallic inks, in addition to the brilliant colors. 1/2 leather and marbled boards and endpapers. 8 INCHES BY 9 INCHES.       Various 1888-1921, London - Condition good to very good. A few volumes with inner hinges split at the gutters. "Island Nights' Entertainments", which is lacking the leaf with the list of the author's works preceeding the half-title page, otherwise all volumes complete with all plates and endpapers present. Three of the titles by Stevenson are first editions: "Catriona" (1893); "Island Nights' Entertainments" (1893); and "Memories" (1912). The remainder of the titles are early reprint editions. "A Lowden Sabbath Morn" has a signed inscription from the illustrator, A. S. Boyd. Provenance: From the collection of New Zealand book collector, journalist, and author Pat Lawlor (1893-1979). 8 of the titles have one of Lawlor's ex-libris bookplates, in 3 different styles. Lawlor wrote about his Stevenson collection in his book "Books and Bookmen" (1954), pages 20-21: "Until recently he was with me entire in the Tusitala Edition which edition never appealed to me. I sold them and am now rebuilding my Stevensonia in the best manner - first and special editions. In such quests I am fortunate. Soon I had illustrated editions, with those appealing maps of Treasure Island, Kidnapped and The Island Nights' Entertainments [. . .] The special edition of the poems published by the Florence Press in 1913 is in its binding a perfect combination of white and gold. George Saintsbury and his father before hime were not so fastidious in their choice of wines as I am in the format of my bookish favourites. I now have my favourite Jekyll and Hyde in three editions including [. . .] a 'near first' published by Longman's in their quaint school-book style - the sailing ship monogram in the left hand corner [. . .] The uniform or even definitive editions become monotonous after a while. KEMBLE, SIDDONS, CHARLES KEAN, BETTERTON, and others, are names that would ennoble any profession, and if many of equal ability with those mentioned failed to rival their virtues, the very delinquencies that their names recall, but add to the never failing interest with which we read of PEG WOFFINGTON, KITTY CLIVE, SAMUEL FOOTE, EDMUND KEAN, COLLEY CIBBER, and a whole host of names classic on the boards of Old Drury. Under ???riple heading of "Actors, Authors and Audiences," Dr. DORAN leaves no corner of theatrical history unvisited that could add to the completeness of his picture of the drama in England. Containing a collection of humorous anecdotes and poems intended to parody popular tourist literature of the time, the book beings: "What this country needs, aside from a new Indian policy and a style of poison for children which will be liable to kill rats if they eat it by accident, is a Railway Guide which will be just as good two years ago as it was next spring — a Railway Guide if you please, which shall not be cursed by a plethora of facts, or poisoned with information — a Railway Guide that shall be rich with doubts and lighted up with miserable apprehensions. In other Railway Guides, pleasing fancy, poesy and literary beauty, have been throttled at the very threshold of success, by a wild incontinence of facts, figures, asterisks and references to meal stations. For this reason a guide has been built at our own shops and on a new plan. It is the literary piece de resistance of the age in which we live. It will not permit information to creep in and mar the reader's enjoyment of the scenery. It contains no railroad map which is grossly inaccurate. It has no time-table in it which has outlived its uselessness. It does not prohibit passengers from riding on the platform while the cars are in motion. Small repair and erasure on half title. Crease on leaves 2/4 and 7/4, without loss of text in either case. Overall in good to very good condition. ---- FIRST EDITION of Olavo Bilac's first published book: Veríssimo describes it as "talvez o mais acabado exemplar do nosso parnasianismo, tanto pelas qualidades formais como de inspiração" (@História da literature brasileira [1969], p. 243). Bilac, Raimundo Correia, Alberto de Oliveira, and Vicente de Carvalho were the four major poets of the Brazilian Parnassian school, which reacted against the excesses of Romanticism beginning in the 1870s. Of these four, the critics preferred Correia, but the public favored Bilac, and he was often referred to as the "Prince of Brazilian poets." In the years immediately following his death, before Modernism took hold, Bilac was the most widely read and imitated Brazilian poet, and even the Modernists?reacting in their turn against precisely the sort of things Bilac stood for?could not condemn his work completely. Jong wrote that "His impeccable poems are fluent, brilliant and full of passion.? Previous owner's name at front, a number of illustrations colored-in (probably by a child). A few pages torn, creased or lightly wrinkled. Hinge at front splitting. Letter in nice shape with creasing, small stain. Quite rare thus.

AN IMPORTANT TEXAS LAND GRANT 43 ¼" x 33 ¾" Texas, without gold mines or fabulous cities, was rich with abundant and affordable pubic land, which attracted a steady stream of visitors during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Lured by the dream of land ownership or profit from land speculation, many left their homelands for the Texas wilderness. It would be difficult to find better illustrations of this migration than the county survey maps charting the boundaries of tracts and names of grantees. These early maps, contemporary with the arrival of new settlers, provide a fascinating visual history of Texas land policy and the settlement of the Lone Star State. While Texas remained a Spanish dominion, land grants were granted to Spanish subjects only. Authority to grant land rested with the viceroy of New Spain in Mexico City until 1767 when the governor of the province of Texas was invested with the authority to issue grants. In 1820 Spain passed a law allowing foreigners to settle in the empire. The government of the now independent Mexico, which controlled the vast public lands of Texas, followed its colonial predecessor's example and in the proceeding years thousands of Anglo Americans undertook the arduous journey across the continent to take advantage of the opportunity to become Texas landowners. Large land grants were also awarded to colony leaders called empresarios, the most famous of whom are probably Moses and his son Stephen Austin. With no central land office, each colony appointed a land commissioner to issue titles to settlers. In 1830 the Mexican congress outlawed further immigration from the United States, sparking the Texas Revolution in the fall of 1835. Upon the establishment of the new Republic in 1836, Texas secured ownership of more than 200 million acres of public land. The Republic of Texas continued the land policies of Spain and Mexico and under its constitution awarded first-class headright to land to all single men and heads of families residing in Texas on March 2, 1836. The first congress of the Republic also established a General Land Office and during the years of independence a total of 36,876,492 acres was parceled out. The pioneers who settled this land helped defend Texan borders from both Indians and Mexico, the latter of which was eager to regain its lands. They also provided valuable tax revenue for the new nation. Texas became the twenty-eighth state of the Union in 1845. With the exception of the thirteen colonies, it is unique among the states because, upon its admittance, it retained its public lands thus providing for its economic strength and success. The new state used some of this land to settle its debts and make public improvements. Under the terms of the Compromise of 1850, Texas ceded its claim to 67 million acres of land to the west and northwest of its current boundaries in exchange for a payment of $10 million. After the settlement of its $7.75 million of debt, Texas used the remainder of the payment to establish a permanent school fund, build a new capitol and governor's mansion, and create a hospital for the mentally ill. The settlement of this public land remained an important part of state policy. Many of the Spanish community property and homestead laws were retained through the era of Mexican rule and the republican period and remained in practice after Texas became a state. Among these, property was exempt from forced sale and land grants extended only as far as the riverbank and not to the middle of the stream, as dictated by Anglo-Saxon common law.
