        Their Majestie's Servants

London: John C. Nimmo, 1888. - English TheaterDORAN, [John]. "Their Majesties’ Servants." Annals of the English Stage from Thomas Betterton to Edmund Kean. By Dr. Doran, F.S.A. Edited and revised by Robert W. Lowe. With fifty copperplate portraits and eighty wood engravings. In three volumes. London: John C. Nimmo, 1888.Limited to 300 numbered copies (this being #222) printed on fine deckle-edge Royal 8vo paper. Three large octavo volumes (9 7/8 x 6 5/16 inches; 251 x 161 mm.). Engraved frontispieces and plates and wood-engraved text illustrations, including fifty portraits in duplicate, one on Japanese and the other on plate paper, as India proofs. Descriptive tissue guards. Wood-engraved tail-piece vignettes.Bound ca. 1970 by [Sangorski & Sutcliffe] for Aspey in three-quarter green crushed levant morocco over green cloth boards, ruled in gilt. Spines decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. A fine set."Readers are indebted to Dr. DORAN in these pleasant volumes, for the first history of the English acted Drama, fitted for ordinary perusal by its moderate length and the amusing nature of its contents. It is sure to become a popular book, as long as the great names of the golden age of the Theatre retain their attraction The actors -- those "diverting vagabonds" -- (as Dr. JOHNSON somewhere called them,) stand indeed a better chance to be remembered than most of their graver cotemporaries. There are many among them whose talents might adorn, and their virtues reflect credit on any sphere of action. GARRICK. KEMBLE, SIDDONS, CHARLES KEAN, BETTERTON, and others, are names that would ennoble any profession, and if many of equal ability with those mentioned failed to rival their virtues, the very delinquencies that their names recall, but add to the never failing interest with which we read of PEG WOFFINGTON, KITTY CLIVE, SAMUEL FOOTE, EDMUND KEAN, COLLEY CIBBER, and a whole host of names classic on the boards of Old Drury. Under ???riple heading of "Actors, Authors and Audiences," Dr. DORAN leaves no corner of theatrical history unvisited that could add to the completeness of his picture of the drama in England. This is traced from its origin, when the players were merely an appendage to regal state, acting by virtue of a royal patent, under the regulation and supervision of an officer of the King's household, the Lord Chamberlain, to the year 1843, when "their Majesties servants" became a formality only, and free trade in the drama was established. Dr. DORAN'S style is objectionable as being too obtrusively vivacious; he is nothing if not piquant, and can scarcely repeat the witticism of another without barbina the arrow and sharpening the point."         Ranch Life and the Hunting Trail

New York:: The Century Co,. 1888.. First edition. Hardcover. "I wish I were with you out among the sage brush, the great brittle cottonwoods, and the sharply-channeled barren buttes," wrote Theodore Roosevelt to his friend and the illustrator of his first important work, Frederic Remington. This is the first issue of the first edition, in the original light tan buckram with green and gilt stamping. & & This work focusses on the period in the 1880s when Roosevelt lived and worked his ranches in the Bad Lands of the Dakota Territory, following the death of his wife Alice Lee. Roosevelt had lost both his wife and mother on the same day in 1884; he left politics for a period and built a ranch (Elk Horn) in North Dakota. While there, he wrote about frontier life and published three books, including this title. & & Roosevelt's environmental and conservation interests were evident in his organizing of ranchers to address issues such as over grazing, and in the formation of the Boone and Crockett Club, with the goal of preserving large game animals and their habitats. As president, Roosevelt played a large role in the formation of the National Park System. In 1906, he signed the Antiquities Act which authorized presidents to proclaim landmarks as national monuments, which had the effect of protecting about a quarter of the places currently in the National Park System. & & Folio, 186pp, beveled boards, all edges gilt. A bit sunned at the spine, a few marks internally, early pages, otherwise a very pleasant copy. Howes R432. OCLC: 7410498.

Mercantile Marine Insurance Rotating Officers Chart

[Boston. circa 1888]. Framed chart of the officers of the Mercantile Marine Insurance Company in Boston, Massachusetts. The original wood frame measures approximately 11" x 13.5" and houses an intricately hand-drawn pen and ink chart with slots for the names of various corporate officers. The acting directors slot at the top features a rotating wheel, open at the rear of the frame, to easily change names. The frame shows moderate chipping while the chart is somewhat soiled, with all but three of the slots containing the original names and the original backers and spacers made from a contemporary calendar contained under the chart in the rear, very good. The Mercantile Marine Insurance Company was a firm established in 1823 and located on 58 State Street in Boston. Despite adding fire coverage to its business the year before the Great Boston Fire of 1872, it still managed to turn a tidy profit and continue doing business for more than a decade. It was one of only two such firms in Boston at the time to offer both marine and fire coverage. An interesting item of 19th Century business decor and utilitarianism. Further details available upon request. .

It is still an invaluable reference, but it functions fabulously well simply as visual entertainment, and the plates contained herein have found their ways to many a print shop where they have been framed and later hung on walls as decoration. As not uncommon among costume books, Racinet also serves up a healthy helping of accessories and interiors throughout the ages. Like Racinet's other masterpiece, "L'Ornement Polychrome", the chromolithography of this work is exceptionally brilliant. Morocco spines with five bands, four of which are raised. Brown morocco has scuffs and sunning with some uneven coloration but still attractive, and impressed gilt lettering is clear. Considerable wear along marbled board edges, with paper overlay worn through along these edges, and in a few spots there is minor denting, but overall boards are attractive and not a serious issue. Marbled endpapers. All volumes tight. Other than a few light pencil marks, the pages are crisp and clean. [Attributes: First Edition]

        The Unknown Horn of Africa:

London: George Philip & Son, , 1888. An Exploration from Berbera to the Leopard River, Octavo. Original dark olive cloth on bevelled boards, title gilt to spine, brown surface-paper endpapers. Hand-coloured lithographic frontispiece heightened with gum arabic and 9 other similar plates, 9 tinted photogravure plates, 4 plain botanical lithographs, numerous tinted vignettes in the text, folding map in an end-pocket. This copy with the ownership inscription of Abel Chapman, the "prolific sporting author", dated in the year of publication, verso of the front free endpaper. Minimal shelf-wear, offset from one of the botanical plates, but overall a truly superior copy of a book often found in calamitous condition. First edition. "While primarily a work of exploration and adventure in Somaliland, the author does partake in a few hunts for kudu, lion, and assorted antelope near the River Webbe. Once while stalking rhinoceros, he came within a few feet of one but was unable to see it due to the heavy growth of mimosa before it made its escape. The coloured plates of birds in the more scarce first issue are especially handsome. James was killed by an elephant in west Africa in 1890" (Czech). While not in the red pictorial cloth, all other signs are that this is a first issue; the colouring of the plates is particularly skilful.

        UBER STRAHLEN ELEKTRISCHER KRAFT

1888 - HERTZ, H[einrich]. UBER STRAHLEN ELEKTRISCHER KRAFT. (Berlin: Gedruckt in der Reichsdruckerei, 1888.) Offprint from Sitzungsberichte der Koniglich Preussischen Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Berlin, 1888, No. 50, pp. 1297 - 1307. The text of a lecture on electric waves delivered 13 December 1888, it relates qualitative experiments undertaken by Hertz, at the Karlsruhe Polytechnic, on the analogy between electric and light waves. Passing electric waves through huge prisms of hard pitch, he showed that they refract exactly as light waves do. He polarized electric waves by directing them through a grating of parallel wires, and he diffracted them by interrupting them with a screen with a hole in it. He reflected them from the walls of the room, obtaining interference between the original and the reflected waves. He focused them with huge concave mirrors, casting electric shadows with conducting obstacles. This is the first print appearance, preceding its appearance in Annalen der Physik (36, p. 769) because, at this point in his career, Hertz was sending his papers to Hermann von Helmholtz to communicate to the Berlin Academy for quick publication before sending them to Annalen der Physik. It was later collected with Hertz's other experimental and theoretical works on electricity in Untersuchungen uber die Ausbreitung der elektrischen Kraft (Leipzig, 1892), which expanded and clarified the electromagnetic theory of light that had been put forth by the British Physicist James Maxwell in 1884. Hertz's experiments with electromagnetic waves led to the development of the wireless telegraph and the radio. (D.S.B.) 11 pp. Octavo, orange paper wrappers, with title information printed to front. Ink ownership stamp of physicist and noted socialist Leo Arons ("Dr. LEO ARONS | Strassburg i. E."), whose scientific work was primarily focused on the empirical research of electrical phenomena that governed Maxwell's theory. Pamphlet is creased vertically. Covers are nicked along edges and show general light dust-soiling. Front cover is detached and has a couple of light pencil markings. Hertz offprints are rare. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
