The History of Ballarat, from the first Pastoral Settlement to the present Time ... Second Edition: With Plans, Illustrations, and original Documents.

8vo. Original blue-green pictorial cloth blocked in dark green and gold; pp. xx, 362, very large folding chromolithographic birds-eye view, large folding colour lithographic plan, ten facsimiles and 20 lithographic plates (6 tinted), many different historiated initials comprising mostly mining scenes; hinges reinforced; large plate and plan with repaired, tears; evenly a little browned, as usual, otherwise very clean and fresh; provenance: presentation plate, printed in Ballarat for Mr James Oddie, 'Ballarat's Pioneer Digger,' inside front cover. Substantially enlarged, lavishly illustrated edition of a monograph on all aspects of the short history and rapid modernization of Ballarat, established just half a century before the publication of this book. This work tells us everything knowable about the town, the mining industry, architecture, violent upheavals (including the Eureka Stockade Riots), illustrates a Chinese restaurant, reprints old documents and proclamations. Provenance: James Oddie (1824-1911) was a Ballarat pioneer who emigrated in 1849 from England. 'James conducted a foundry in Geelong until August 1851 when gold fever lured him to Buninyong. On 1 September he moved to Golden Point, Ballarat, where as a diggers' representative he protested against the miners' licences. He joined the rushes to Mount Alexander and Bendigo and after varying luck opened a store in 1853 at Smythesdale, where he was among the first to oppose the £50 store licence. He was probably the author of the pamphlet, Laughing a Crime (Melbourne, 1853). In 1854 he moved his store near the Eureka stockade, attended many protest meetings and witnessed what he described as 'the massacre of innocent diggers'. A friend and admirer of Peter Lalor, he later erected his statue at the cost of £2200 in the main street of Ballarat' (Australian Dictionary of Biography). He expanded his local business empire and became first chairman of the Ballarat Municipal Council in 1856-58, remaining true to his liberal and democratic convictions.

Picturesque New Guinea. With an historical introduction and supplementary chapters on the manners and customs of the Papuans; accompanied with fifty full-page autotype illustrations..

London: Longman's, Green, and Company, 1887. Joints and spine ends rubbed, but a very good copy preserved in a custom slipcase.. Octavo, autotype photographic plates; original gilt decorated cloth, recased with new endpapers; slipcase. First edition of this famous work, probably the most outstanding example of expedition photography undertaken in the Southern Hemisphere. This is an unusually good copy of this scarce book, more often seen in poor condition or in later binding, or both. Lindt, an accomplished professional photographer, accompanied the expedition that established Sir Peter Scratchley as the first British administrator of Papua New Guinea. Lindt's photographs are beautifully reproduced in this volume by the autotype process, probably still the most effective process for the mechanical reproduction of photographic images. The text of Lindt's volume includes his detailed account of the expedition and other material on Papua and the native population, including a section by G.S. Fort. From an ethnographic perspective, this book is a lasting visual record of coastal Papuan cultures now irrevocably changed. Longhouses, tree-houses and native sailing craft are all amply illustrated.

Die Radiolarien (Rhizopoda Radiaria). Eine Monographie. Zweiter Theil: Grundriss einer allgemeinen Naturgeschichte der Radiolarien & Dritter und Vierter Theil: Die Acantharien und Phaeodarien oder Actipyleen und Cannopyleen Radiolarien.

Berlin, Georg Reimer, 1887-1888. 3 parts bound in 2 volumes. Folio (360 x 275mm). pp. xvii, 248, with one large folding coloured map and 64 (some coloured) lithographed plates; pp. (8), 31, with 12 (some coloured) lithographed plates; pp. (8), 31, with 30 (many colourerd) lithographed plates. Contemporary half cloth with publisher's printed boards. A complete copy consists of 4 volumes with 141 plates of which we offer volumes 2-4. The above work is Haeckel's greatest achievement in systematic zoology and at the same time it is his rarest work. The fine plates are after the author's own drawings, who besides from being a famous biologist, was a very gifted artist. "In his 'Radiolarien' Haeckel used Darwinian concepts in his discussion of the relations of the families of this order, in his consideration of a genealogical table, and his speculations regarding the original primitive type form of the order; and he emphasized the evolutionary significance of transitional forms" (R.C. Stauffer. Haeckel, Darwin, and ecology). The plates also appeared in the author' s radiolarian volumes of the 'Challenger-Report'. A fine copy.

Histoire des Ballons et des Aéronautes célèbres.

Portrait of the author (in two states) & many photogravure plates (some in color & some double-page). xxiv, 156 pp., one leaf; 2 p.l., v, 161 pp., one leaf. Two vols. Large 4to (300 x 215 mm.), orig. printed wrappers bound in embroidered bindings designed by Marius Michel (detailed description below), t.e.g., others uncut. Paris: H. Launette, 1887-90. [bound with at the end of the second volume]:--. Bibliographie aèronautique. Catalogue de Livres d'Histoire, de Science, de Voyages et de Fantaisie, traitant de la Navigation ou des Aérostats. Decorative head-pieces. 62 pp., one leaf. Large 4to, orig. printed wrappers bound in. Paris: H. Launette, 1887. The author's own set, so stated on the limitation page, assembled in the most luxurious state from the issue limited to 25 copies printed on Japan paper, bound in two highly important embroidered bindings by Marius Michel. This set of the Histoire contains a double suite of all the photogravure plates and text illustrations in different states. The Bibliographie aèronautique is numbered "1" of 25 copies on Japan paper. Chemist, meteorologist, author, and aviator Gaston Tissandier (1843-99), and his brother Albert were the most famous balloonists of their time. They were the first to successfully power an airship using an electric motor. Gaston's history of ballooning was the standard work for many years and his bibliography was the first to be compiled on the subject of aviation. It is hard to imagine a more elaborate and luxurious set of these two works: the author's own copies, printed specially on Japan paper and limited to 25 copies each, with double sets of illustrations in different states, and bound in two superb and important embroidered bindings designed by and executed for Marius Michel. These works were exhibited at the magnificent and ground-breaking exhibition "Livres en Broderie," organized by Sabine Coron and Martine Lefèvre in 1995 at the Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal. The bindings are described as follows: original brown morocco, spines in five compartments & lettered in gilt; inset panels on each cover with elaborately embroidered floral scenes with pale green silk backgrounds, framed with alternating shades of brown & silver wire, flowers in various hues ranging from pale blue to dark red, each flower also framed with silver wire; each upper cover with a balloon ascending in the upper right hand corner, the balloon on Vol. I with the legend: "Sic itur ad astra," the balloon on Vol. II with a different design; the lower covers both having the same design but each employing different ranges of colors. The embroidery is very fine and fresh. Doublures with quintuple fillets in gilt and red silk endpapers. Morocco chemises and slipcases. Top edges gilt, others uncut. ❧ BnF, Livres en Broderie. Myerson D138; BAL vol. 3, page 68. 2 vols, 8vo, original blue cloth, gilt lettering, t.e.g. Frontis portrait. A substantial memoir of Emerson that includes previously unpublished selections from his letters, journals and manuscripts. This is one of a few advance copies ("probably no more than 50" - Myerson) with the following printed note from the publisher tipped in both volumes: "This advance copy of Mr. Cabot's Memoir of Mr. Emerson is sent to you in accordance with the author's desire that, as a personal friend of Mr. Emerson, you may have it on the latter's birthday, May 25; but as the work will not be issued till September next, you are respectfully and earnestly requested to regard it as confidential, until its formal publication, and especially to guard against its being reviewed in the press before that time. Houghton, Mifflin & Co." On the front blank of this copy is the following inscription: "James Russell Lowell / from J. E. Cabot / May 25 1887." Lowell made a few annotations in the margins ("But what a different traveller was Montaigne!") and on the front free endpaper is the signature of his descendant Francis Lowell Burnett.

Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There

London: Macmillan and Co.,, 1887. Fifty-Seventh Thousand. Octavo. Original red cloth, title to spine gilt, triple gilt rules to covers, gilt roundels with "Alice" motifs to covers, black coated endpapers, all edges gilt. Housed in a custom red quarter morocco and buff cloth solander box. Frontispiece with tissue-guard and 49 illustrations by John Tenniel. Spine rolled, some minor bubbling to cloth, covers lightly finger-marked, shallow nick to head of rear panel, hinges split, fore edge of front free endpaper nicked, text block shaken. Third edition, presentation copy to the child actress who appeared in the first professional stage performance of "Alice". Inscribed on the front free endpaper: "Presented to Georgina Martin by Lewis Carroll as a memento of her having taken part in the DreamPlay 'Alice in Wonderland' written by H. Savile Clarke and first produced Christmas, 1886." Following a few amateur stage versions of Alice, Dodgson was convinced that his story had theatrical possibilities and he tried unsuccessfully to engage Arthur Sullivan to write some songs for a musical production in 1877. "Ten years passed, and Charles was still looking for an appropriate way of mounting Alice in the West End. Then, on August 28, 1886, he heard from Henry Savile Clarke, playwright, drama critic, and newspaper editor, requesting permission to make an operetta of the Alice books" (Cohen, p. 435). After agreeing to a few of Dodgson's conditions (including insisting that Clarke not give any publicity to his real name), permission was granted and Alice in Wonderland, "A Musical Dream Play, in Two Acts, for Children and Others," opened on 23 December 1886 at the Prince of Wales Theatre. Dodgson's twelve year-old friend Phoebe Carlo was cast in the lead role of Alice, and the play was both a theatrical and critical success. Georgina Martin (b. 1876) and Edith Martin (b. 1880) were the two youngest children of David Martin (b. 1839), a domestic servant and groom, and his wife, Laura (b. 1842), of 15 Castle Street East, Marylebone, London. Dodgson presented both children with copies of Alice for performing in the Alice in Wonderland play (Diaries, Vol. 8, note 629). [Laid-in:] Christmas Greetings [from a Fairy to a Child].
