Kurt Schwitters Catalogue raisonné Band 1 1905-1922 / Kurt Schwitters Catalogue raisonne Volume 1 1905-1922 [Gebundene Ausgabe] Karin Orchard (Autor), Isabel Schulz (Autor) Sprengel Museum Hannover No

Januar 1948 in Ambleside/Westmoreland verstarb. Kurt Schwitters was one of the most influential, groundbreaking, and forward-looking artists of international Modernism-yet only certain areas of his immensely diverse oeuvre have been thoroughly investigated and catalogued. His has now been properly and fully documented for the first time, in a landmark three-volume catalogue raisonn, which is particularly notable for bringing to light many of Schwitters' previously unpublished pictorial work, including collages, drawings, and paintings. This first volume covers the artist's early years, with little-known works form the period prior to World War I, as well as the earliest MERZ pieces he created between 1918 and 1922. Schwitters' works are here organized chronologically and, within years, according to genre, and the book also features a detailed illustrated biography of the artist 997 Abb., 104 farb.         The Game of Logic.

London: MacMillan and Co, 1887. First trade edition. Octavo, original publisher's red cloth. Inscribed by Lewis Carroll to his nephew, on the half-title in purple ink, "Bertram J. Collingwood with the Author's love Mar. 87." The volume contains the original envelope containing the playing board, with six of the nine rare counters. In very good condition with some rubbing to the extremities and a small repair to the spine. Uncommon signed and inscribed. The native acuteness and ingenuity of [Carroll's] intellect led him to devote much attention to formal logic, in whose intricate puzzles he delighted, and he almost seemed to have convinced himself that it was an engine for the discovery of new truth, instead of a means of detecting error--that more could be got out of the premises than was put into them" (DNB). This first published edition was preceded only by an extremely small private printing in 1886 that Carroll suppressed.

Otello Dramma Lirico in Quattro Atti versi di Arrigo Boito... Riduzioni di Michele Saladino Canto e Pianoforte (A) netti Fr. 20. Pianoforte Solo (A) netti Fr. 12

Milano: Tito di Gio. Ricordi [PN 51023], 1887. First Edition, earliest issue, preceding Hopkinson's 63A "first issue." The main differences between the present issue and Hopkinson's first issue is the absence of reference to the date of first performance on the title and the presence of St. Petersburg agent "M. Bernard" instead of "E. Mellier to the foot of the title." Crawford p. 604. Otello, to a libretto by Arrigo Boito after William Shakespeare's play Othello, or The Moor of Venice, was first performed in Milan ad the Teatro alla Scala on February 5, 1887. "That Otello, give the composer's age and eminence, should be hailed by the majority as the greatest Italian opera of its day as well as the composer's crowning achievement could be taken for granted. Has time upheld these judgements? The first of them, most certainly. Indeed no opera of the 1880s comes within leagues of it except for Parsifal. While the 'veristic' melodramas, Tosca and Madama Butterfly included, which shocked and thrilled the Europe of the fin du siècle, are still very much of their period, Otello remains as fresh, as challenging, as essentially modern as the day it was written. To detractors of Italian opera it remains, together with Falstaff and The Requiem, the composer's passport to immortality. Indeed, many have come to a full understanding of Verdi's genius by starting from Otello..." Budden: The Operas of Verdi, p. 412.. Quarto. Original publisher's full purple cloth with decorative stamping and titling gilt, decorative endpapers. 1f. (recto half-title, verso blank), 1f.

4 (3 autogr. and 1 typed) letters signed. Mostly London, 1887 to 1915.

1887. Small 4to and 8vo. Altogether 10¼ pp. To various addressees, on appointments and non-appointments: "It is with sincere and keen regret that I find myself unexpectedly disabled by the call of public duty from being present with you this evening. I had looked forward to the opportunity of hearing what Lord Haldane had to say on the subject of our National duty in these critical times, and of paying such tribute as I could to the signal service he has rendered, and the splendid example he has set, to the Empire. As I cannot be with you, I should be glad if you would convey my message to your meeting. Lord Haldane is the oldest personal and political friend that I have in the world. For the best part of 35 years we have been associated in close and unbroken intimacy. We have worked together, and fought side by side, through many vicissitudes of fortune, in the pursuit of what we have believed to be great and worthy causes, without (so far as I can recall) more than a passing shadow of difference in opinion, and always with the same ideals in view [...]" (from the letter of July 5, 1915; to Mr. Lincolnshire).

A very good copy. First edition, deluxe issue, number 105 of 250 large-paper copies, also published in the United Kingdom sometime the same year under the title American Yachts and Yachting, the American edition with likely priority, and preferred on the basis of the author's nationality.         Kan'yu nikki [trans.: Journey around the World]

Numerous plates & maps (some folding & in color). Three vols. in two. 8vo, orig. sheep-backed cloth (extremities rubbed), spines lettered in gilt. [Tokyo: Privately published],1887. First edition and privately published. Kuroda (1840-90), served as the second Prime Minister of Japan in the years 1888-89, during which he oversaw the promulgation of the Meiji Constitution. During the early 1870s, he had travelled widely: Korea, China, America, and Europe. In 1874, he was appointed director of the Hokkaido Colonization Bureau and invited many American agricultural experts to visit Hokkaido to provide advice on which crops would be the most successful. Unfortunately, in 1881 he became caught up in the Bureau's scandal which caused him to resign from public office. As a result, he again travelled in Europe and the United States during the years 1886-87. The present book is a detailed account of Kuroda's travels, including a vivid account of his crossing Siberia from Vladivostok to St. Petersburg. He gives careful and full details of Korea, Russia (including Moscow and St. Petersburg), Istanbul, Italy, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Amsterdam, Brussels, Scotland, England (including London), Paris, New York (where he carefully studied the Brooklyn Bridge), the Erie Canal, Niagra Falls (of course!), Chicago, and San Francisco (including the fish canneries). Throughout he provides many observations on agricultural practices, industrial methods, foreign trade, the manufacture of steam engines, political and educational systems, public safety, transportation and communication systems, Chicago slaughter houses, military education, taxation, the punishment of criminals, and much statistical information. Very good set.

Mother Lifting Child, Plate 214 from Animal Locomotion

1887 - MUYBRIDGE, Eadweard. "Mother Lifting Child," Plate 214 from Animal Locomotion. [Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania, 1887]. Single large folio sheet, measuring 23-1/2 by 18 inches (colotype image measures 14-1/4 by 7-1/4 inches, apart from letterpress); mat size: 25-1/4 by 20-3/4 inches. $3500.Original "Author's Edition" collotype of multiple sequential studies of a mother lifting her child, from the most significant photographic work on the natural motion of animals. To settle a $25,000 bet that a galloping horse leaves the ground completely, former governor of California Leland Stanford hired photographer Eadweard Muybridge to determine whether or not his claim might be true. Muybridge designed an elaborate photographic system that combined batteries of multiple cameras with rapid shutter mechanisms, in an effort to capture the horse with all four feet off the ground. Stanford won his bet. These were the first successful sequential photographs of rapidly moving objects, and Muybridge would devote the rest of his life to similar photographic studies"" with the help of painter Thomas Eakins, who successfully persuaded the University of Pennsylvania to subsidize Muybridge's further experimentations. Between 1884 and 1886 Muybridge and his team produced 20,000 negatives of various animals and humans in motion, which were then arranged on 781 plates and printed in 1887 as Animal Locomotion. This magnificent sequence of a mother lifting her child is plate number 214, with penciled caption in bottom corner, "Lifting child from ground and turning. Same model as last." See Frizot, 244ff.; Grolier, Truthful Lens 123. Professionally cleaned, archivally matted. A historic piece. Scarce. [Attributes: First Edition]

Histoire des Ballons et des Aéronautes célèbres

Portrait of the author (in two states) & many photogravure plates (some in color & some double-page). xxiv, 156 pp., one leaf; 2 p.l., v, 161 pp., one leaf. Two vols. Large 4to (300 x 215 mm.), orig. printed wrappers bound in embroidered bindings designed by Marius Michel (detailed description below), t.e.g., others uncut. Paris: H. Launette, 1887-90. [bound with at the end of the second volume]:-. Decorative head-pieces. 62 pp., one leaf. Large 4to, orig. printed wrappers bound in. Paris: H. Launette, 1887. The author's own set, so stated on the limitation page, assembled in the most luxurious state from the issue limited to 25 copies printed on Japan paper, bound in two highly important embroidered bindings by Marius Michel. This set of the Histoire contains a double suite of all the photogravure plates and text illustrations in different states. The Bibliographie aèronautique is numbered "1" of 25 copies on Japan paper. Chemist, meteorologist, author, and aviator Gaston Tissandier (1843-99), and his brother Albert were the most famous balloonists of their time. They were the first to successfully power an airship using an electric motor. Gaston's history of ballooning was the standard work for many years and his bibliography was the first to be compiled on the subject of aviation. It is hard to imagine a more elaborate and luxurious set of these two works: the author's own copies, printed specially on Japan paper and limited to 25 copies each, with double sets of illustrations in different states, and bound in two superb and important embroidered bindings designed by and executed for Marius Michel. These works were exhibited at the magnificent and ground-breaking exhibition "Livres en Broderie," organized by Sabine Coron and Martine Lefèvre in 1995 at the Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal. The bindings are described as follows: original brown morocco, spines in five compartments & lettered in gilt; inset panels on each cover with elaborately embroidered floral scenes with pale green silk backgrounds, framed with alternating shades of brown & silver wire, flowers in various hues ranging from pale blue to dark red, each flower also framed with silver wire; each upper cover with a balloon ascending in the upper right hand corner, the balloon on Vol. I with the legend: "Sic itur ad astra," the balloon on Vol. II with a different design; the lower covers both having the same design but each employing different ranges of colors. The embroidery is very fine and fresh. Doublures with quintuple fillets in gilt and red silk endpapers. Morocco chemises and slipcases. Top edges gilt, others uncut. ? BnF, Livres en Broderie. Reliures françaises du Moyen Age à nos Jours, item 124-(with illustration in color).

        Applicazioni geometriche del calcolo infinitesimale

Fr.lli Bocca, 1887. In 8, pp. XII + 334 + (1) + (1) di errata con ill. n.t. Legatura in mz. pl. coeva.
