        THE WOODLANDERS

, 1887. 1887. In Three Volumes. London: Macmillan and Co., 1887. Original dark green cloth. First Edition of this novel involving a faithful suitor, a flashy rival, and a heroine who makes a fatal choice -- reminiscent of FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD a decade earlier, which in fact was when Hardy first conceived of this story.~The first edition consisted of 1000 copies, of which 860 were initially bound up in dark green buckram-grained cloth (and were undoubtedly sold primarily to the circulating libraries). The 140 other sets of sheets were subsequently bound quite similarly but in pebble-grained cloth (and without the Vol I ad leaf); the present copy is such a set. As Purdy observes, the pebble-grained binding "is distinctly less common than the buckram-grained binding", as one would expect; however, since most of the buckram-grained copies were "read to death" by fortnightly borrowers from the circulating libraries (whereas no ex-library copies of the pebble-grained binding have ever been noted), Hardy collectors have learned that the secondary binding is their best hope of procuring a nice copy of THE WOODLANDERS.~Such is the case here: this set is in bright, near-fine condition (scarcely any external wear other than a faint crease in one board; a couple of the original chocolate brown-coated endpapers cracked). Hardy three-deckers are very uncommon in this condition. Purdy pp 54-57; Muir POINTS I p. 120 (& facing plate); Wolff 3002a.

Most Pleasant and Delectable Tale Of the Marriage of Cupid and Psyche, The

London: David Butt, 1887. A Fine Arts and Crafts Style Inlaid Binding by Alfred De Sauty [DE SAUTY, Alfred, binder]. ADLINGTON, William, translator. The Most Pleasant and Delectable Tale Of the Marriage of Cupid and Psyche. Done into English by William Adlington Of University College in Oxford. With a Discourse on the Fable By Andrew Lang, late Of Merton College In Oxford. London: David Nutt, 1887. Limited to five hundred and fifty copies. Octavo (7 5/8 x 5 inches; 193 x 125 mm.).[ii], [lxxxvi], [1,], [1, blank], 65, [1, blank]. With a Pre-Raphaelite engraved frontispiece, a wonderful etched engraving of Venus and the Sea-Gull by Scottish Artist Vereker Monteith Hamilton (1856-1931), and a small engraved vignette on the last leaf. Original front wrapper bound in at end. Bound ca. 1910 by Alfred De Sauty (stamp-signed "De Sauty" in gilt on front turn-in) in an Arts and Crafts style binding of full dark green morocco. Front cover with double gilt ruled border surrounding ten floral clusters with maroon morocco inlaid bouquets and fine pointillé, all joined together by a decorative gilt bordered inlaid dark blue morocco gilt decorated branch. In addition there are fourteen inlaid red morocco butterflies and two small gilt decorated inlaid red morocco circles. The center of the front cover is lettered in gilt "Cupid and Psyche". Rear cover with double gilt ruled border surrounding four similar 'corner-piece' floral clusters with maroon morocco inlaid bouquets. There is a central rectangular panel surrounded by a double gilt border enclosing four small gilt decorated inlaid red morocco circles. Spine with five raised bands, decoratively paneled and lettered in gilt in compartments with five decorative gilt butterflies, gilt ruled board-edges, triple gilt ruled turn-ins, top edge gilt, others uncut. Spine ends expertly and almost invisibly repaired. A superb and understated example of the genius of Alfred De Sauty. Alfred de Sauty (1870-1949) was a bookbinder who produced tooled bindings of exceptional delicacy. De Sauty was active in London from approximately 1898 to 1923 and in Chicago from 1923 to 1935. His finest work is thought to be have been accomplished between 1905 and 1914. Many aspects of his life are poorly documented. For instance, scholars are unsure whether, when in London, de Sauty worked independently, for the firm of Rivière & Sons, or both. While in London, he may also have been a designer for the Hampstead Bindery and a teacher at the Central School of Arts and Crafts. When he lived in Chicago, de Sauty worked for the hand bindery of R. R. Donnelley & Sons. He signed his work at the foot of the front doublure, if present, and at the center of the bottom turn-in of the front upper board, if not. Works he produced in London are signed "de S" or "De Sauty." Works he produced in Chicago are signed with his employer's name, 'R. R. Donnelly'" (Bound in Intrigue, Harvard Botany Libraries Online Exhibit) William Adlington (fl. 1566) was one among the host of translators that made the Elizabethan era the "golden age of translations". His Englishing of Apuleius' 2nd century CE novel Metamorphoses, better known by its English title The Golden Ass (1566, reprinted 1571, 1582, 1596) was its first appearance in English and has been steadily reprinted into the 20th century. His prose is bold and delightful, though he does not stick as close to his source as a modern translator would be expected to do, in part because he had probably translated from a French edition of the text alongside the original Latin. The book was a favourite source of Shakespeare's. The Most Pleasant and Delectable Tale of the Marriage of Cupid and Psyche is an excerpt from it.

Tatowiren. Narbenzeichnen und Korperbemalen. Ein beittrag zur vergleichenden ethnologie.

      - Berlin, Asher 1887. Folio publisher's cloth backed printed boards (recased and rebacked preserving the original spine, edges somewhat rubbed and scraped); [2],viii,128pp, one plain and 11 coloured lithograph plates, illustrations through the text. Some browning and spotting but a very presentable copy. There are no common tattoo books of any age or consequence and this ranks high among the most desirable and hard to find. Born a rich kid, Joest was a fieldworker - a traveller, collector and ethnologist of enormous range - and quite properly he died of some fever in the New Hebrides at the age of 45. His collections form the core of the Rautenstrauch Joest Museum in Cologne. His thesis, that despite whatever religious rituals surround tattooing the wellspring is vanity and sexual preening, was discounted by later researchers (who reached absurd levels of Freudian gobbledygook by the nineteen sixties), but his research - historical, from other travellers and ethnologists, and first hand - remains impecable. New Zealand, Melanesia and New Guinea, south-east Asia and Japan are particularly well covered. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Signed Photograph to Leone Sinigaglia

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Superb signed photograph of the great Italian composer who takes a place among the most influential figures in the history of opera and whose works, including such classics as Rigoletto, La Traviata, and Aïda, are a cornerstone of the genre. Original cabinet photograph by Pagliano e Ricordi (Milano), signed and inscribed in ink to fellow composer Leone Sinigaglia "Al Sr. Leonino Sinigaglia...G. Verdi / Milano 9 Feb 1887." <br><br><br />Born in Turin into an upper-middle-class family, Sinigaglia knew the leading figures of thought, arts and science that lived in the city at the time. In 1888 Sinigaglia began to travel: after spells in several European cities, from 1894 he lived in Vienna, where he associated with Johannes Brahms from whom he developed a taste for so-called absolute music, studying with Eusebius Mandyczewski. In these years he wrote several Lieder and the Concerto for violin and orchestra, opus 20. From 1900 he worked in Prague with Antonín DvoÃ…?ák (whom he possibly met through his friendship with the Bohemian Quartet in Vienna). His productivity diminished progressively in the following decades, during which European music underwent far-reaching changes. He died during the Second World War, in tragic circumstances: his Jewish origins made him subject to the persecutions of the Nazi police who occupied Turin during 1944; despite his 75 years he was to be sent to Germany as slave labour, but suffered a fatal heart attack at the moment of his arrest.

Otello Dramma Lirico in Quattro Atti versi di Arrigo Boito... Riduzioni di Michele Saladino Canto e Pianoforte (A) netti Fr. 20. Pianoforte Solo (A) netti Fr. 12

Milano: Tito di Gio. Ricordi [PN 51023], 1887. First Edition, earliest issue, preceding Hopkinson's 63A "first issue." The main differences between the present issue and Hopkinson's first issue is the absence of reference to the date of first performance on the title and the presence of St. Petersburg agent "M. Bernard" instead of "E. Mellier to the foot of the title." Crawford p. 604. Otello, to a libretto by Arrigo Boito after William Shakespeare's play Othello, or The Moor of Venice, was first performed in Milan ad the Teatro alla Scala on February 5, 1887. "That Otello, give the composer's age and eminence, should be hailed by the majority as the greatest Italian opera of its day as well as the composer's crowning achievement could be taken for granted. Has time upheld these judgements? The first of them, most certainly. Indeed no opera of the 1880s comes within leagues of it except for Parsifal. While the 'veristic' melodramas, Tosca and Madama Butterfly included, which shocked and thrilled the Europe of the fin du siècle, are still very much of their period, Otello remains as fresh, as challenging, as essentially modern as the day it was written. To detractors of Italian opera it remains, together with Falstaff and The Requiem, the composer's passport to immortality. Indeed, many have come to a full understanding of Verdi's genius by starting from Otello..." Budden: The Operas of Verdi, p. 412.. Quarto. Original publisher's full purple cloth with decorative stamping and titling gilt, decorative endpapers. 1f. (recto half-title, verso blank), 1f. (recto title, verso publisher's statement and device], 1f. (recto named cast list, verso blank), 1f. (recto index, verso blank), 364 pp. Title, cast list and index leaves printed in black and red inks. Preserved in a custom-made olive green cloth slipcase edged in dark red morocco. Cast includes Tamagno as Otello, Maurel as Iago, Paroli as Cassio, Fornari as Roderigo, Navarrini as Lodovico, Limonta as Montano, Lagomarsino as the Herald, Pantaleoni as Desdemona, and Petrovich as Emilia. With publisher's small oval corner blindstamp dated "1 (January) 1887" to lower inner corner of first several leaves. Facsimile signature handstamp of former owner to lower portion of title. Binding slightly worn; faded at spine and edges. Browned; occasional minor foxing; some leaves slightly creased at lower outer corner.

        Shokaizu [Various sea charts]

Japan Hydrographic Office, Meiji 20-30 [1887-1897]., Tokyo, - Japanese Admiralty Charts 52 large folding lithograph maps (lacking Kyushu-Shikoku and Manchuria) including large world map, four large folding key charts and explanation of terms and topographical features. Following on from the Meiji Restoration of 1868 the government established the Japan Hydrographic Department in 1871 in order to undertake detailed surveys of Japanese coastal waters as well as areas that were deemed crucial to their national interest. During the 1870s and 1880s the British Navy was regarded as the model for the development of the Japanese Navy. The Douglas mission of 1873-1879 laid the foundation of Japanese naval officer training and a British naval lieutenant John M. James, who had been surveying Japanese coastal waters, was hired to advise the Naval Ministry. British Admiralty Charts had a high reputation for accuracy and their maps were copied by the Hydrographic Department during the late 1880s. Many of the hydrographic surveys in this period were in fact operated by British surveying vessels who then supplied the information to Japan in order to build good relations. Of particular interest are the maps of Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the China Coast. Map 34 includes the now disputed islands of Senkaku (Diaoyutai) claimed by both China and Japan, and map 41 shows the Liancourt rocks, claimed by both Korea and Japan. The present set of maps is accompanied by a manuscript title, ?Äòvarious sea charts?Äô, which states that it belonged to the Army War College (Rikugun Daigakujo) where it was kept for ?Äúeducational use?Äù. Sets of these maps are extremely rare.

Autograph Letter to Carl Reinecke - "I want to give up composing"

      - An interesting autograph letter from the great Russian pianist and composer to the composer Carl Reinecke, thanking him for sending him a copy of his overture "Zenobia," and confessing that he wants to give up composing himself.  Rubinstein writes, "I wish I could return the favor, but. I want to give up composing -- I have written a great deal and my compositions actually only please me, and that is, after all, not a good enough reason to write more." Writing in 1887 at the age of 58, Rubinstein was slowing down, but was in fact quite far from the end of his prolific compositional output: before his death in 1894, he would still publish a significant number of stage and orchestral works, piano pieces and songs.Dated St. Petersburg, April 14/26, 1887. 1 p. of a bifolium; one slight crease, overall in very fine condition with a beautiful and bold signature. 4.25 x 7 inches (11 x 17.5 cm).Text and translation below:Dear Reinecke,Many thanks for the touching inscription and kind delivery of your overture "Zenobia" -- I wish I could return the favor, but .because I want to give up composing -- I have written a great deal and my compositions actually only please me, and that is, after all, not a good enough reason to write more. -- So many thanks again and best wishes to you and your wife.Yours,Ant. "Magia blanca y magia prieta" - Color Woodcut Print

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Striking color woodcut proof for the cover of a magic book, by the great engraver known as the "Printmaker to the Mexican People." Titled "Magia blanca y magia prieta" (White magic and dark magic), the image shows a magician, an angel, a fearsome devil and many more symbols of sorcery. The name of the printer, Antonio Vanegas Arroyo, who published many of Posada's works, appears at the lower right. Printed in black, red, and brown inks. Overall toning, light ink smudging on parts of the print, slightly irregularly trimmed, with light wear and one chip to the lower edge; otherwise in fine condition for a proof. 8.75 x 6.75 inches (22.1 x 17 cm).<br style="">The artist, engraver, folk illustrator, and political cartoonist José Guadalupe Posada came out of poverty to become one of Mexico's most important artists, a creative mouthpiece of the common man and an influence on later artists such as muralists Diego Rivera and José Clemente Orozco. <br style="">"In 1887, he joined the Antonio Vanegas Arroyo Publishing House, doing illustrations for a wide variety of printed publications, many of which had editions in the thousands... Posada knew his intended audience well; most were poor, illiterate and enjoyed the sensational aspect of any story. Using well-known symbols, and with an uncanny journalistic sense, Posada was able to identify a hierarchy of interests for the common man: family, work, neighborhood, government, disasters, religion and the supernatural. His illustrations, which were always linked to a story, were graphic reports that read from left to right. Posada was a master of composition and chiaroscuro (dark/light) and his prints always convey a feeling of action and movement...His political drawings reveal a deep social consciousness; Posada was a moralist whose criticism was aimed at everyone, not just the obvious government officials. His personal and artistic integrity were well-known, even though he worked for much of his life in complete obscurity. He died in 1913 and was buried in a common grave."         Artistic Cookery. A Practical System for the use of the Nobility and Gentry and for Public Entertainments

London: Longmans, Green & Co, 1887. Large quarto, 244 pages. Illustrated with eighty steel engraved plates. The second edition in English of Urbain-Dubois' extraordinary portrait of grand French Cuisine at the end of the 19th Century. The Franco-Prussian War encroached on the plan for the book's original French publication, so the work was translated into English and issued in London in 1870. Only after the end of the war was the French edition issued, with additional plates and text. But the English release played a great part in introducing Russian service to the English (the book offers menus for both Russian and French service). Urbain-Dubois was a pupil of Careme's, chef de cuisine to the King and Queen of Prussia, Chef for Prince Orlov of Russia and the German Emperor. Tissue guards are browned, a very light bit of foxing throughout, otherwise internally fine. Small closed cut to spine of original gilt-titled brown cloth. Wear to head and foot of spine. [OCLC cites only two copies of this 1887 printing; not in Bitting, Cagle, or Oberlé].
