Rapport van de ingenieurs der 2de klasse van de marine H. Cop en J.S. van Veen, betreffende hunne reis door Engeland tot het bezoeken van eenige marine- en particuliere etablissementen van scheepsbouw in 1885. [Amsterdam and Hellevoetsluis, December 1885]. Small folio (33.5 x 21.5 cm). With 5 numbered lithographed folding plates showing plans of ships, the first a very large lithographed plan of the Japanese cruiser "Naniwa-Kan" built by the firm Armstrong, Mitchell & Co (on 2 sheets, measuring ca. 32 x 135 cm as assembled). Original half black cloth, printed paper sides with the printed letter "F.", word "Geheim" (secret) and "No." with a stamped "8" (apparently meaning this is copy number 8 of a very small press-run).

      - NCC (1 copy); WorldCat (same copy); not in Cat. NHSM. Second copy located of a report by the two marine engineers Cop and Van Veen, on their trip inspecting various types of cruisers at the marine department of the International Inventions Exhibitions at London, and various shipyards including that of the well-known Newcastle-based firm Armstrong, Mitchell & Co. An introduction to the trip is followed by more information on cruiser ships in general and detailed information on various types of cruiser and individual cruisers, including the Japanese cruisers "Naniwa-Kan" and "Takachiho-Kan" and the torpedo cruisers "Scout" and "Fearless".The trip and its report was made by the marine engineer H. Cop, who was to be appointed professor of naval architecture at the Polytechnic School in Delft in 1887, and the marine engineer Jacobus Simon van Veen (1859-1935), who published several technical works and wrote more polemical articles on naval policy. This copy comes from the "Bureau van den Inspecteur o.d. stoomvaartdienst" (office of the inspector for steamshipping). Text with some minor foxing. Very good copy.

New of Pom and Song The English and Japanese. è‹±å’Œå ¾è æ–°ä½"é‹å‹•æŒ [Eiwa Taiyaku Shintai Undoka].

      - Tokyo, 1887 [Meiji 20]. Small octavo publisher's illustrated wrapper; [2],32,[2]pp. A bit used, rather good copy for such a vulnerable thing. A christmas gift inscription on the front to 'Father' dated Dec 16, 1887. A pioneering Japanese foray into English poetry and poetry in English which I can't find anywhere but the National Diet Library. Elsewhere I found two references to this. One is Basil Chamberlain's 'Things Japanese', the other 'Japan for a Week' by Alexander M. Thompson who clearly never saw this booklet but, misreading Chamberlain, requotes a poem from 'Things Japanese' which isn't in this. Chamberlain, in the chapter 'English as She is Japped' quotes two poems without explicitly stating they are from this; they aren't. Did he see the book? What is here is a mix of what seem to be poems by English and Japanese writers, things that are more aphorisms and morals than poems and an intriguing excerpt from Tennyson's Charge of the Light Brigade. This isn't a production for western tourists or export of the pretty sort that became popular through the 1890's. This is a modest first step of the Japanese setting out - as they did with all things western - to learn, encompass and digest a new form.

        SOME CHINESE GHOSTS

, 1887. 1887. Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1887. Original bright red cloth decorated in brown. First Edition of Hearn's second book -- but his first book of "original" work (since his earliest, STRAY LEAVES FROM STRAY LITERATURE (1884), was a collection of folk tales he had "reconstructed"). This volume presents as a similar volume -- half a dozen supernatural tales from the Far East -- but is in fact from Hearn's own imagination. Written while a resident of New Orleans, SOME CHINESE GHOSTS is "a series of brilliantly polished but static sketches" [K&H] that had first appeared in Harper's Magazine. After this book was published, Hearn accused Roberts Bros. of robbing him of royalties, and the book (save a few hundred copies already sold) and printing plates were destroyed. It was not until 1890 that Hearn left for Japan, where he would settle, become a Japanese citizen, marry, and ultimately be appointed chair of English Literature at the Imperial University of Tokyo.~This copy is in bright red cloth, one of several colors used without priority; the endpapers are decorated with a pattern of leaves and flowers in olive brown, again one of several used without priority. It is in remarkably fine, bright condition -- essentially as new. Blanck 7916; Bleiler 787. Housed in a cloth slipcase, this copy bears the small leather "Blairhame" bookplate of the noted collector Mrs. J. Insley Blair.

First edition of one of the rare early anatomical works of one of the most important German anatomists, later also known for his introduction of vaccinations against smallpox soon after Jenner's 1798 publications on the subject, his work on fossils and sunspots, and his 1809 invention of an electrical telegraph. The present work discusses the anatomy of the human brain and spinal chord, carrying on from the author's doctoral thesis a decade earlier on the neural organization of the brain.

DSB IX, 552. Poggendorff, IV, 1034. First published between 1887 and 1890, this multi-volume chronicle of Maori history and culture was one of the first books to record the oral narratives of the indigenous people of New Zealand. The project was commissioned by the New Zealand government in 1879 when it was observed that, due to the introduction of European culture and education, tribal lore was diminishing. The material was collected and recorded by John White (1826-91), an ethnographer and public servant who had been well versed in Maori language and customs from an early age. The stories were printed in both Maori and English. Volume 6, published in 1890, contains additional narratives about the Tainui migration and describes wars both between Maori tribes and against Europeans. It concludes with detailed genealogies of gods, ancestors that were traditionally recited in ritual contexts such as births or burials. This set also includes a later printed (often absent) volume of plates. According to 'Bagnall', publication of 14 volumes was planned, but for reasons unknown, not continued beyond volume 6.. First Edition. Illustrated Cloth. Vg/No Jacket. 8vo. Hard Cover.

        THE WOODLANDERS

1887. In Three Volumes. London: Macmillan and Co., 1887. Original dark green cloth. First Edition of this novel involving a faithful suitor, a flashy rival, and a heroine who makes a fatal choice -- reminiscent of FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD a decade earlier, which in fact was when Hardy first conceived of this story.~The first edition consisted of 1000 copies, of which 860 were initially bound up in dark green buckram-grained cloth (and were undoubtedly sold primarily to the circulating libraries). The 140 other sets of sheets were subsequently bound quite similarly but in pebble-grained cloth (and without the Vol I ad leaf); the present copy is such a set. As Purdy observes, the pebble-grained binding "is distinctly less common than the buckram-grained binding", as one would expect; however, since most of the buckram-grained copies were "read to death" by fortnightly borrowers from the circulating libraries (whereas no ex-library copies of the pebble-grained binding have ever been noted), Hardy collectors have learned that the secondary binding is their best hope of procuring a nice copy of THE WOODLANDERS.~Such is the case here: this set is in bright, near-fine condition (scarcely any external wear other than a faint crease in one board; a couple of the original chocolate brown-coated endpapers cracked). Hardy three-deckers are very uncommon in this condition. Purdy pp 54-57; Muir POINTS I p. 120 (& facing plate); Wolff 3002a.

Sühring`s plastisch-mechanisches Volks-Museum.

Lauban, printed with Carl Goldammer, s.d., but around 1887. - Typographical wall bill with a xylographic illustration advertising a travelling museum of wax works. The illustration shows the booth. Size: 18 x 8 inches. two soft horizontal fold, but in fine condition. Rare wall bill of a little known exhibitor, touring northern Germany in the late 1880s. The ‘popular museum’ as Sühring calls his exhibition display, consisted of a large variety of mechanised wax-works of historical, contemporary or mythical characters, scenes and figures: An indian snake charmer, the innocent girl at the pillory, little red riding hood’s encouter with the wolf in the forests, a scene from the persecution of jews in czarist Russia, a fire in North American virgin forests, the northpol expedition of the Swedish explorer Nordenskjöld including the hunt for polar bears and whales and more. Rear cover with double gilt ruled border surrounding four similar 'corner-piece' floral clusters with maroon morocco inlaid bouquets. Spine with five raised bands, decoratively paneled and lettered in gilt in compartments with five decorative gilt butterflies, gilt ruled board-edges, triple gilt ruled turn-ins, top edge gilt, others uncut. Spine ends expertly and almost invisibly repaired. A superb and understated example of the genius of Alfred De Sauty.Alfred de Sauty (1870-1949) was a bookbinder who produced tooled bindings of exceptional delicacy. De Sauty was active in London from approximately 1898 to 1923 and in Chicago from 1923 to 1935. His finest work is thought to be have been accomplished between 1905 and 1914. Many aspects of his life are poorly documented. For instance, scholars are unsure whether, when in London, de Sauty worked independently, for the firm of Rivière & Sons, or both. While in London, he may also have been a designer for the Hampstead Bindery and a teacher at the Central School of Arts and Crafts. When he lived in Chicago, de Sauty worked for the hand bindery of R. R. Donnelley & Sons. He signed his work at the foot of the front doublure, if present, and at the center of the bottom turn-in of the front upper board, if not. Works he produced in London are signed "de S" or "De Sauty." Works he produced in Chicago are signed with his employer's name, 'R. R. Donnelly'" (Bound in Intrigue, Harvard Botany Libraries Online Exhibit)William Adlington (fl. 1566) was one among the host of translators that made the Elizabethan era the "golden age of translations". His Englishing of Apuleius' 2nd century CE novel Metamorphoses, better known by its English title The Golden Ass (1566, reprinted 1571, 1582, 1596) was its first appearance in English and has been steadily reprinted into the 20th century. His prose is bold and delightful, though he does not stick as close to his source as a modern translator would be expected to do, in part because he had probably translated from a French edition of the text alongside the original Latin. The book was a favourite source of Shakespeare's. The Most Pleasant and Delectable Tale of the Marriage of Cupid and Psyche is an excerpt from it.
