The Bar-Tender's [Bartenders] Guide; or, How to Mix All Kinds of Plain and Fancy Drinks

Fitzgerald Publishing Corporation, Successor to Dick and Fitzgerald, Publishers New York (1887) - "Entirely New and Revised Edition". Original yellow wrappers (printed in black and red), 130 pages, 7 by 4 1/2 inches. Full title continues: "Containing Clear and Reliable Directions For Mixing All The Beverages Used In The United States, Together With The Most Popular British, French, German, Italian, Russian, and Spanish Recipes; Embracing Punches, Juleps, Cobblers, Etc., Etc., In Endless Variety. By Jerry Thomas, Formerly Principal Bar-Tender at the Metropolitan Hotel, New York, and the Planters' House, St. Louis." Jerry Thomas and publishers Dick & Fitzgerald introduced the first cocktail mixing guide in America in 1864 bound with Schultz' Manual for the Manufacture of Cordials which is dropped for this edition. This third edition is notable for containing numerous cocktails that gained popularity in the 1880's and for its inclusion of the Martinez, recognized by cocktail aficionados, as a prelude to the Martini (made with gin, vermouth, bitters, two dashes of maraschino, and ice). Also very likely debuted in this edition is a variant of the Manhattan, (made with vermouth, rye whiskey, bitters, two dashes of curacao or maraschino, and ice). A important work of American bar tending and extremely uncommon in wrappers, more commonly found (when found at all) in cloth. An unlikely survivor given its fragile construction. Very Good, about a centimeter of loss at top spine end, nicked at lower spine end, wear to spine edges, some fading at spine, tiny nick and closed tear at top front wrap. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

ENGLISH: Worth seeing and most instructive for Gentlemen, Ladies and Children! To be indentified by the mechanical sun: W. Sühring?s plasto-mechanical popular museum. W. Sühring`s plastisch-mechanisches Volks-Museum.

The illustration shows the booth. Size: 18 x 8 inches. two soft horizontal fold, but in fine condition. Rare wall bill of a little known exhibitor, touring northern Germany in the late 1880s. The ?popular museum? as Sühring calls his exhibition display, consisted of a large variety of mechanised wax-works of historical, contemporary or mythical characters, scenes and figures: An indian snake charmer, the innocent girl at the pillory, little red riding hood?s encouter with the wolf in the forests, a scene from the persecution of jews in czarist Russia, a fire in North American virgin forests, the northpol expedition of the Swedish explorer Nordenskjöld including the hunt for polar bears and whales and more. Most of the displays appear to involve automatic motions, as for example: ?Mademoiselle Blanche, the world famous dancer of the Paris opera, here shown with natural motions of her breasts?.

A fine copy. ----Dibner Heralds of Science 71; See PMM 377; Norman 1060. - FIRST EDITION of Hertz's first paper on electromagnetic waves, with the second journal publication of his second paper. "When Hertz entered physics in the 1870's, electrodynamics was in a disorganized state. Theories had multiplied in its fifty years of development, and each had its own following... To encourage... the experimental decision between electrodynamic theories Helmholtz proposed through the Berlin Academy of Sciences in 1879 a second prize problem, this one in connection with the behavior of unclosed Circuits in Maxwell's theory... Although at the time Hertz declined to try the Berlin Academy problem... he kept the problem constantly in mind; and in 1886 shortly after arriving in Karisruhe he found that the Riess or Knochenhauer induction coils he was using in lecture demonstrations were precisely the means he needed for undertaking Helmholtz' test of Maxwell's theory... By the end of 1888 he had gone beyond the terms of Helniholtz' problem and had confinned the existence of electromagnetic waves in air... He published a total of nine papers from his electrical researches in Karlsruhe. They drew immediate, widespread recognition.." (DSB). -- In his first paper Hertz described the apparatus that he had devised for the detection and measurement of electromagnetic waves, the key to his later successes. To prove that electrical waves can be projected though space it was necessary to devise a means of both producing the waves and, more difficult at the time, of detecting them once produced. For this Hertz used "an effect as old as the discovery of electricity itself-the electric spark. By inducing the waves to produce an electric spark at a distance, with no apparent connexion between the oscillator and the spark gap, and by moving the sparking apparatus so that the length of the spark varied, he proved beyond question the passage of electric waves through space" (PMIVI). "Hertz's proof was the result of his experimental inventiveness... He regarded his detection device as his most original stroke, since no amount of theory would have predicted that it would work" (DSB). In his paper on ultraviolet light Hertz showed that UV light is alone responsible for the photoelectric effect, an effect which he foresaw as having "profound theoretical meaning for the connection of light and electricity" (op.cit.). The volume also includes papers by Max Planck, W C. Rontgen, R. Bunsen, and others. Near Fine.

Lady Noel Byron and the Leighs: some authentic records of certain circumstances in the lives of Augusta Leigh, and others of her family, that concerned Anna Isabella, Lady Byron, in the course of forty years after her separation. [Edited by Ralph Gordon Noel Milbanke, Earl of Lovelace.] Strictly Private. FIRST EDITION.

Printed for the descendants of Lord & Lady Byron, by William Clowes & Sons. 1887 Half title/limitation leaf; occasional neat pencil notes & underlining. Uncut in orig. pale blue boards, drab spine, paper label; spine a little darkened & hinges a little weak.Wise (Byron) pp111-112. 36 copies printed, of which this is number 2. Inscribed on half title, 'John C. Fox, Goring on Thames. Given to me by Mary Countess of Lovelace, 14 September 1922', and with a further inscription beneath: 'Given to C. Draper by Miss Elsie Fox 1961'. This exceedingly scarce piece of Byroniana (Wise describes it as 'hopelessly unobtainable', noting that 'the larger proportion' of the 36 printed copies were destroyed) belonged, until 1922, to Mary Caroline, Countess of Lovelace. She was married to Ralph Gordon Noel Milbanke, son of William King-Noel, 1st Earl of Lovelace, and Ada Lovelace, Lord Byron's only legitimate daughter. It was given by the Countess of Lovelace to James C. Fox, the noted Byron scholar, and subsequently passed to his daughter, Elsie, who in turn gave it to C. Draper in 1961. A brief letter, paper-clipped on to the leading f.e.p. advises "Christie", i.e. C. Draper, that 'as she [Elsie Fox] gave you the book some years ago it is still yours to do with it as you like best.'. Draper had evidently offered to return the book to the Fox family following the death of Elsie, and this note from Mary Theophilus, Elsie's sister, assures him the book remains his. Milbanke's work forms an attempt to debunk the myths surrounding his grandmother Lady Byron and her sister-in-law Augusta Leigh, and show that their relationship remained one of mutual trust and cordiality.

China. No. 2 (1887). Despatch from Her Majesty's Minister at Peking, Forwarding a Report by Mr. H. E. Fulford, Student Interpreter in the China Consular Service, of a Journey in Manchuria.

London. Harrison and Sons. June1887. Large colour folding map of Manchuria, 20pp, original wrappers, some foxing, quarto. This Report was submitted by H.E. Fulford (later Consul-General, 18 60 -1929) then a young student interpreter, who had been authorized to make a journey through Manchuria and requested to pay special attention to certain subjects, including the cultivation of native opium. As shown on the map attached to the report, his travels from May to December 1886 were extensive, ranging from north to south and east to west and taking in much of the then insufficiently known country. Though not directly stated, he made the journey in the company of H. E.M. James, a senior officer of the Indian Civil Service and author of "The Long White Mountain, A Journey in Manchuria" (London, 1888) who, with Captain F.J. Younghusband of the British Army in India, had wished to travel in China. Fulford had been authorized to join them, since he could speak and write Chinese.Fulford encountered Russian officials along the northern frontier, and many Korean immigrants in the south. He found that the Manchu government and its soldiery (all Manchu Bannermen) was ineffective in some areas, to the point where, from necessity, a Chinese Hunters Guild had been formed to administer a large forest tract that was otherwise without law and order, and that Chinese officials were being introduced to manage the large number of Chinese immigrants who formed the bulk of the population. Opium cultivation was proceeding in the face of the ineffectual proclamations he saw in various places, and was clearly well-established. He pays some attention to trade and industry, noting the resources and products of the country.Fulford's report was considered to be of value by the British Minister to China, who besides sending it to London, had also forwarded the sections on opium to the Viceroy of India. It should be read in conjunction with James' book which, by reason of its length, would have more to say on this and other subjects covered in the report. As it happened, Younghusband too (later Sir Francis) would provide a short but useful account of their Manchurian travels in his book, The Heart of a Continent (London, 1896). He includes an interesting photograph of the three travelers who seem to have been well suited to each other on this lengthy, and sometimes arduous, journey.

The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire.

London: John Murray, 1887. Eight volumes, octavo, single portrait frontispiece, 14 maps (12 folding and 5 coloured); understated half brown morocco, gilt spine with raised bands. A most attractive set of Gibbon's opus, first published in 1776 and here re-issued with notes by Dean Milman, M. Guizot and William Smith. The first volume includes a portrait frontispiece of Gibbon by Sir Joshua Reynolds. The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire remains an intriguing work; although in some respects superseded by the following century of (primarily German) classical scholarship, Gibbon style is fresh and intriguing, and the historiographical questions he raises are effectively timeless.

Rapport van de ingenieurs der 2de klasse van de marine H. Cop en J.S. van Veen, betreffende hunne reis door Engeland tot het bezoeken van eenige marine- en particuliere etablissementen van scheepsbouw in 1885. [Amsterdam and Hellevoetsluis, December 1885]. Small folio (33.5 x 21.5 cm). With 5 numbered lithographed folding plates showing plans of ships, the first a very large lithographed plan of the Japanese cruiser "Naniwa-Kan" built by the firm Armstrong, Mitchell & Co (on 2 sheets, measuring ca. 32 x 135 cm as assembled). Original half black cloth, printed paper sides with the printed letter "F.", word "Geheim" (secret) and "No." with a stamped "8" (apparently meaning this is copy number 8 of a very small press-run).

      - NCC (1 copy); WorldCat (same copy); not in Cat. NHSM. Second copy located of a report by the two marine engineers Cop and Van Veen, on their trip inspecting various types of cruisers at the marine department of the International Inventions Exhibitions at London, and various shipyards including that of the well-known Newcastle-based firm Armstrong, Mitchell & Co. An introduction to the trip is followed by more information on cruiser ships in general and detailed information on various types of cruiser and individual cruisers, including the Japanese cruisers "Naniwa-Kan" and "Takachiho-Kan" and the torpedo cruisers "Scout" and "Fearless".The trip and its report was made by the marine engineer H. Cop, who was to be appointed professor of naval architecture at the Polytechnic School in Delft in 1887, and the marine engineer Jacobus Simon van Veen (1859-1935), who published several technical works and wrote more polemical articles on naval policy. This copy comes from the "Bureau van den Inspecteur o.d. stoomvaartdienst" (office of the inspector for steamshipping). Text with some minor foxing. Very good copy.

New of Pom and Song The English and Japanese. è‹±å’Œå ¾è æ–°ä½"é‹å‹•æŒ [Eiwa Taiyaku Shintai Undoka].

      - Tokyo, 1887 [Meiji 20]. Small octavo publisher's illustrated wrapper; [2],32,[2]pp. A bit used, rather good copy for such a vulnerable thing. A christmas gift inscription on the front to 'Father' dated Dec 16, 1887. A pioneering Japanese foray into English poetry and poetry in English which I can't find anywhere but the National Diet Library. Elsewhere I found two references to this. One is Basil Chamberlain's 'Things Japanese', the other 'Japan for a Week' by Alexander M. Thompson who clearly never saw this booklet but, misreading Chamberlain, requotes a poem from 'Things Japanese' which isn't in this. Chamberlain, in the chapter 'English as She is Japped' quotes two poems without explicitly stating they are from this; they aren't. Did he see the book? What is here is a mix of what seem to be poems by English and Japanese writers, things that are more aphorisms and morals than poems and an intriguing excerpt from Tennyson's Charge of the Light Brigade. This isn't a production for western tourists or export of the pretty sort that became popular through the 1890's. This is a modest first step of the Japanese setting out - as they did with all things western - to learn, encompass and digest a new form.

        SOME CHINESE GHOSTS

, 1887. 1887. Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1887. Original bright red cloth decorated in brown. First Edition of Hearn's second book -- but his first book of "original" work (since his earliest, STRAY LEAVES FROM STRAY LITERATURE (1884), was a collection of folk tales he had "reconstructed"). This volume presents as a similar volume -- half a dozen supernatural tales from the Far East -- but is in fact from Hearn's own imagination. Written while a resident of New Orleans, SOME CHINESE GHOSTS is "a series of brilliantly polished but static sketches" [K&H] that had first appeared in Harper's Magazine. After this book was published, Hearn accused Roberts Bros. of robbing him of royalties, and the book (save a few hundred copies already sold) and printing plates were destroyed. It was not until 1890 that Hearn left for Japan, where he would settle, become a Japanese citizen, marry, and ultimately be appointed chair of English Literature at the Imperial University of Tokyo.~This copy is in bright red cloth, one of several colors used without priority; the endpapers are decorated with a pattern of leaves and flowers in olive brown, again one of several used without priority. It is in remarkably fine, bright condition -- essentially as new. Blanck 7916; Bleiler 787. Housed in a cloth slipcase, this copy bears the small leather "Blairhame" bookplate of the noted collector Mrs. J. Insley Blair.

      - August Hirsch, Biogr. Lexikon . Aerzte (1887), pp. 453-455; cf. VD18 (1792 ed.). First edition of one of the rare early anatomical works of one of the most important German anatomists, later also known for his introduction of vaccinations against smallpox soon after Jenner's 1798 publications on the subject, his work on fossils and sunspots, and his 1809 invention of an electrical telegraph. The present work discusses the anatomy of the human brain and spinal chord, carrying on from the author's doctoral thesis a decade earlier on the neural organization of the brain. In very good condition. The backstrip is slightly damaged, but the binding remains good.
