THE MAYOR OF CASTERBRIDGE (The Exceedingly Fine Estelle Doheny Copy of the First Edition, Two Volumes in Original Cloth)

London: Smith, Elder, 1886. Hardy, Thomas. THE MAYOR OF CASTERBRIDGE: The Life and Death of a Man of Character. In Two Volumes. London: Smith, Elder & Co, 1886. First Edition in original publisher's dark blue cloth, decorated in black, gold-lettered on spine. Ads in both volumes as called for. A FINE, bright set in original untouched condition from the famed libraries of Estelle Doheny and Frank Hogan (bookplates). Both volumes show minor abrasion and blemish to the boards but, remarkably, the dark blue cloth is unfaded making this particular set a condition rarity, one of the finest examples of the first edition that we've handled or seen in thirty-five years of specializing in Victorian Fiction in general and Hardy in particular. Only 650 copies of the first edition were printed and bound in 1886, the rest of the print run of 758 copies left unbound or remaindered. And of these 650 bound copies, those few that survive today generally do so in rebound state, or bearing the ravaged signs of lending library abuse. No so, this superb example. THE MAYOR OF CASTERBRIDGE is often lauded as Hardy's most perfectly plotted novel and Michael Henchard holds pride of place as Hardy's best drawn, most complex male character within the author's 14-novel canon, a protagonist worthy of a Shakespearean tragedy. Purdy pp. 50-53. Housed in a matching slipcase. . First Edition. Decorative Cloth. Near Fine.

        The Shrine of Death

London; Routledge. 1886, 1886. First edition. 8vo. Publisher's black buckram cloth titled and decorated in gilt to spine and front board. Light rubbing and cuffing to extremties, bumping to spine ends with a little trivial fraying to head. Very Good indeed. A rather elusive collection of strange and weird tales, this copy made more distinctive by virtue of having been inscribed by the author to the title page.

        Alice's Adventures Under Ground

London: Macmillan & Co., 1886 Illustrated by the author. First edition, first printing. One of 5,000 copies. Publisher's red cloth, boards lettered and decorated in gilt, all edges gilt, black coated endpapers. A fine copy with extremely bright gilt, small sticker to the rear pastedown. A stunning copy. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson wrote the nonsensical story Alice's Adventures Under Ground under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll for Alice Liddell, who was a frequent subject of Dodgson's revolutionary portrait photography. The text was first published in a suppressed edition by Macmillan in London in 1865 and then by D. Appleton in New York in 1866 as Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. This volume contains a facsimile edition of the original manuscript text Carroll wrote for Alice Liddell. In his preface, Carroll explains that he published this manuscript twenty years after the first edition of Alice "wholly an afterthought, pressed upon me by the 'perhaps too partial friends,'" and decided to donate the proceeds it generated to hospitalized children. He avers, "I can truly say that no praise of theirs has ever given me one hundredth of the pleasure it has been to think of the sick children in hospitals (where it has been a delight to me to send copies) forgetting, for a few bright hours, their pain and weariness." Notably, while Alice in Wonderland and the subsequent Through the Looking Glass would be illustrated by John Tenniel, Alice's Adventures Under Ground contains Carroll's own illustrations - the earliest depictions of the now iconic characters.. First Edition.. Hard Cover. Fine.

According to a note from the "Globe" (printed on the verso of the half-title to volume I), Castellane "[at 17 went to Algeria] enlisted as a simple private in a Zouave regiment, and won each stripe at the point of the bayonet, earning his epaulettes as a subaltern in the field whilst fighting under Colonel MacMahon. Some graphic accounts are given of the campaigns in which he took part and of the manners and customs of the troops out there". Gay 801 for the French first.

Large Format Photos Encased in Portfolio with Gilt Title in German - Dutch Tobacco Plantation in Sumatra Indonesia

Sumatra, 1886. Bekala Estate, near Medan, Sumatra, 1886-1888. Portfolio of photographs containing 20 rare, large format albumen views of one of the earliest tobacco plantations in the Dutch East Indies, taken and preserved by one of its administrators, 12 being dated and captioned in manuscript in Dutch. Photographs vary in size. Eighteen measure approximately 27 x 36 cm, are mounted with onto heavy cardstock leaves, and show the plantation, its workers and administrators. One further duplicate print is included. Two measure approximately 17 x 22,5 cm, are mounted onto gilt outlined grey photograph mounts, and illustrate a sojourn to a nearby missionary house. The lot housed in a purpose-made portfolio with folding overlaps, a double elephant folio measuring approximately 40 x 50 cm, maroon cloth boards with gilt title to front in German "Erinnerung an Sumatra" [Memories of Sumatra]. Minor wear at extremities of portfolio, slight age-toning, otherwise in Very Good Condition, exceedingly rare primary source photographic material. Paramount to any tobacciana collection, photographs of a sizeable and foremost Dutch East Indies tobacco plantation - producing the world's best tobacco at the time - are exceedingly scarce. This portfolio of views compiled by an administrator who was involved in overseeing the daily production operations and who evidently lived on the Bekala Estate. Situated in the Deli Serdang Regency in Northeastern Sumatra, it was only eleven kilometres south of the city of Medan which ultimately developed into a prosperous colonial city due to neighbouring plantations such as this one. The large colonial images show Indian workers engaged in the fermentation house, men preparing for a day's work with field implements in hand, young children engaged in the grinding or pounding process. A vast estate, rows upon rows of tobacco plants flourish, while trees are felled in surrounding hills for further expansion. Especially striking is a group photograph of Indonesians in the village of Buah Nabar who appear most perplexed by the man behind the lens. As well, an indigenous community on the estate is illustrated and captioned "Haus des Pengulus... Kampung... Bekalla Mai 1888," loosely translated as the private house of the community chieftain. [Buah Nabar is in the Sumatera Utara province, Deli Serdang] Administrators Mr. van Beuningen, Mr. van Helsdingen, Mr. Jacob Weil, and others, pose in front of their principal cottage. Gatherings also take place on the verandas of their individual exquisite estate residences, providing them all the comforts of Europe in the deforested jungles of Sumatra. Weil names his residence "Maison Riau." The photographs from this collection are taken in May 1888, exceptions being two from the autumn of 1887, and the earliest dated 1886. The Tropen Museum in Amsterdam holds the same photograph of the men working in fermentation house, theirs being captioned "Koelies bezig in de fermenteerschuur op de tabaksonderneming Bekalla van de Deli Maatschappij Oost-Sumatra." In 1895 a sample was taken from the Bekala Estate near Medan, Sumatra, by the United States Department of Agriculture, describing it as follows in the report published January 1896, "This sample is from the Bekala estate of the Deli Maatschappij. The soil is loamy and easily cultivated, and produces the very best kind of Sumatra tobacco imported into America, known as the "bull eye speckled" tobacco. The sample is from a depth of from 4 to 12 inches." Still today people flock annually to the Bekala Estate, albeit not for its tobacco, but to celebrate the Hindu festival of Thaipusam at the Sri Mariammam temple built there in 1876. This is one of the few places in the world still participating in the traditional Theemithi ritual - walking on fire. From humble beginnings as a small kingdom on the Deli River delta, Medan became a booming plantation town and administrative centre in the early 1900s , attracting wealthy Europeans and rendering great fortunes as Sumatra's tobacco, rubber, palm oil and tea fetched high prices on the world markets. The Deli district tobacco was considered the best in the world and the Deli wrapper leaf for cigars rapidly became famous. The modern history of the Medan area begins in 1862 when Dutch entrepreneur Jacob Nienhuys recognised the potential of the rich volcanic soils of the area. Backed by several other Europeans keen for a fortune, Nienhuys persuaded the Sultan of Deli to grant a concession of land for the growing of tobacco, consequently annexing the lands predominantly inhabitanted by the Karo people and alienating them as a result of deforestation. The chief (datuk) of the Kingdom of Sunggal in Deli was strongly opposed and took action against the Dutch, resulting in the Sunggal War of 1872-1897. The Karo people were supported by the people of Aceh and Malay, and although the foreigners suffered significant losses, the Karo were defeated by the Dutch military. From the late 1870s, major international investments in plantation agriculture flooded into the area. Medan grew from a tiny village to a prosperous colonial city.. Very Good.

Danton's Tod. Ein Drama in 3 Akten.

Im Verlage von W. L. Rosenberg (Wilhelm Ludwig Rosenberg),, New York, 1886 - Erste Separatausgabe. New York, Im Verlage von W. L. Rosenberg (Wilhelm Ludwig Rosenberg), 1886. 12°. 92, (2) Seiten. Original Softcover / Originale Titelbroschur. Wilhelm Ludwig "William" Rosenberg (1850-unknown, 1930s) was a German-American teacher, poet, playwright, journalist, and socialist political activist. He is best remembered as the head of the Socialist Labor Party of America from 1884 to 1889. Wilhelm Ludwig Rosenberg was born in Hamm, Westphalia, Germany in January 1850. Rosenberg was university educated, and worked as a teacher of Latin and French in Frankfurt am Main. Rosenberg was politically radical from an early age and was a contributor to Die Neue Welt (The New World), a German socialist newspaper. Rosenberg was forced to emigrate from Germany in 1880 under the pressure of the Anti-Socialist Laws of 1878, landing in America. Rosenberg resumed life as a teacher in Boston and joined the fledgling Socialist Labor Party of America (SLP). Rosenberg subsequently moved to Chicago, where he served as editor of a succession of politically oriented newspapers, including Die Fackel (Sunday edition of the Chicagoer Arbeiter-Zeitung, 1881-1884), the SLP's official organ, Der Sozialist (1885–1889), Der Tramp (New York, 1888), and Vorwärts, (New York City, from 1892). (Wikipedia) While in Chicago, Rosenberg wrote politically charged plays to be performed in the several working-class theatres of the city.[7] One of these dramas, Die Nihilisten (The Nihilists), was performed in honor of the Paris Commune in 1882 and featured three future defendants in the 1886 Haymarket affair — Michael Schwab, August Spies, and Oscar Neebe — playing leading roles.[7] The play dealt with legal proceedings against a group of Nihilists in Tsarist Russia, who were sentenced to exile in Siberia, and finally freed by their comrades following the overthrow of the Tsar.[8] In the May 18, 1882 performance in North Side Turner Hall, the role of the liberators was played by members of the local Lehr-und-Wehr Verein (Education and Defense Society), an armed workers' militia movement sweeping the German-American radical community in the Chicago area at the time.[8] The implications of this casting could not be missed. Another play by Rosenberg, Die Tochter des Proletairiers (The Proletarian's Daughter) was performed at the 1883 celebration of the Paris Commune in Chicago.[8] This play dealt with the daughter of a class-conscious worker who fell in love with the son of a factory owner and was subsequently repudiated by her father.[8] By 1883 the membership of the SLP had fallen to an estimated 1500 members in just 30 Sections, a depressing atrophy which had led to the abandonment of the organization in April of that year even by its nominal head, Corresponding Secretary Philip Van Patten.[9] Two individuals filled the role on a temporary basis for the rest of the year, culminating in the party's 4th National Convention in December 1883. There the 16 delegates, in an effort to forge links with non-party revolutionary socialists in an effort to keep them out of the camp of the rival anarchist movement, decided to steer the organization on a leftward course, curtaining the authority of the governing National Executive Committee and abolishing the centralizing post of Corresponding Secretary altogether in an ef [Attributes: Soft Cover]
