Liberia: The America-African Republic. Being some impressions of the climate, resources, and people, resulting from personal observations and experiences in West Africa

Edward O. Jenkins' Sons, New York 1886 - 107 pages plus an ad; with a number of engravings in the text. With an introduction by G. W. [George Whitefield] Samson critical of the U.S. government's failure to assist the former slaves who settled in Liberia with few resources. Stewart was born a free black in antebellum South Carolina, attended college, was ordained a minister of the African Methodist Episcopal church, passed the bar, and held a never-ending string of influential positions in whatever community he found himself in. This book was written based on his experiences in Liberia as a professor in the early 1880s. He offers a history of the country, from its earliest founding as a colony for former slaves and free American blacks. Stewart was skeptical about Liberia's chances without support from the United States or some other power. He was equally critical of white attitudes, observing that God 'has stationed the climate there [in Tropical Africa] as a gloomy, watchful sentinel, with special orders against white men (p. 44).' The bad climate (which occupies several chapters of the book), caused much suffering among the residents of Liberia, but at least white men stayed away. Stewart also writes extensively on the relationship between 'Liberians' (American blacks and former slaves who relocated to Africa) and the native peoples they were displacing. He observed that many Liberians adopted Southern attititudes for work, believing the native Africans should do it (p.72). The solution would be 'fusion' between the natives and the American new-comers (p. 83). He concludes that the best hope for Liberia is the spread of Christianity. An important and widely-cited book, by a leading African American stateman and activist of the 19th century. Uncommon in commerce; many holdings in WorldCat, very few east of the Mississippi. A lovely copy in the publisher's original blue boards. Minor wear to extremities; previous owner's address stamp on rear pastedown, else a fine copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Handbuch des Französischen Civilrechts.

Freiburg i. Aufl. Hrsg. von Heinrich Dreyer. 4 Bde. 8vo.

1886. First edition. One of 200 copies, this being number 111 of 170 printed on Hollande paper. Elegantly bound in full red morocco with gilt titles to the spine and simple border and leaf design to the upper and lower board. A fine copy. Considered to be one of the hallmarks of French symbolist poetry, these prose-poems inspired many authors and artists, including the Surrealists, the counter-culture Beat Movement and musicians Bob Dylan, Jim Morrison and Patti Smith. Many were written in London whilst living in self-exile with Verlaine, the relationship coming to an abrupt end when, soon after returning, Verlaine was arrested and imprisoned for firing a shotgun at Rimbaud whilst drunk. The collection is notable for the inclusion of "Marine" and "Mouvement", which are vers libre, the first free verse poems written in the French language.         Grundzüge der anatomischen und klinischen Chemie. Analecten für Forscher, Aerzte und Studierende von Ludwig J.W. Thudichum.

      - Berlin, Verlag von August Hirschwald, 1886, 8°, VIII, 348 pp., Halbledereinband der Zeit; St.a.Tit. First Edition! Liberia: The America-African Republic. Being some impressions of the climate, resources, and people, resulting from personal observations and experiences in West Africa

New York: Edward O. Jenkins' Sons, 1886. First Edition. Hardcover Hardcover. Near Fine. 107 pages plus an ad; with a number of engravings in the text. With an introduction by G. W. [George Whitefield] Samson critical of the U.S. government's failure to assist the former slaves who settled in Liberia with few resources. Stewart was born free in atnebellum South Carolina, attended college, was ordained a minister of the African Methodist Episcopal church, passed the bar, and held a never-ending string of influential positions in whatever community he found himself in.

Louis Agassiz His Life and Correspondence.

1886 - 8vo. 2 vols. Original blue cloth, gilt lettering to spines; pp. xi, 400, [8, pubs. list of works by Agassiz] & ix, 401-794, [6, pubs. list of works by Agassiz], 8 plates, frontispiece in each volume; near fine. Provenance: presentation copy, inscribed to front blank of each volume to Sara P. Lowell Blake from Mrs Agassiz, and with her calling card pasted at front of vol. I with the message “My dear Sally - I have wished to bring these vols. to you myself - I leave them with a great deal of love from your old friend, and am so sorry dear not to see you & to hear that you are ill, Your loving E.C.A.” Sara Putnam Lowell Blake was the daughter of John Amory Lowell, the founder of the Lowell Institute where Louis Agassiz was a celebrated guest lecturer. It was probably at the Institute that Eliza first met Sally. Second edition. A biography of the naturalist and geologist Louis Agassiz (1807-1873) by his second wife. Elizabeth Agassiz accompanied her husband on his visit to Europe in 1859, and also on his expeditions to Brazil (1865-6) and to the Strait of Magellan (1871-2). Her biography first appeared in 1885, and presentation copies of any edition are uncommon. Agassiz's views are expressed trenchantly throughout, not least his opinion of Darwinism: "My recent studies have made more adverse than ever to the new scientific doctrines which are flourishing now in England… I trust to outlive this mania also" (p. 647).

Cm.35,5x25,7. Pg.XX, 396. This novel was the basis for numerous stage productions including one by Burnett.Fillm versions were made in 1921 and 1936.
