        Bibliography of South Australia

Adelaide: E. Spiller, Government Printer, 1886. Octavo, 118 pp., lithographic title-page and wrappers, an outstanding copy in a navy quarter calf bookform box with gilt lettering. Scarce bibliography bearing the bookplate of Sir Henry Ayers, the successful colonial entrepreneur and longstanding premier of South Australia after whom Ayer's Rock was named. The bibliography was prepared by Thomas Gill, a South Australian resident and book collector, for distribution at the London Colonial & Indian Exhibition of 1886. This copy is beautifully preserve in the original lithographic wrappers featuring a bushland scene with native flora and fauna. Gill was a keen collector of Australiana, with a considerable personal collection reflecting his interests in geography, exploration and Aboriginal life. This bibliography was principally compiled from the publications in the author's library, and some years later in 1903 he published a bibliography of the Northern Territory.

SUMMARY: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain is an 1876 novel about a young boy growing up along the Mississippi River. The story is set in the fictional town of St. Petersburg, inspired by Hannibal, Missouri, where Twain lived. Tom Sawyer lives with his Aunt Polly and his half-brother Sid. Tom dirties his clothes in a fight and is made to whitewash the fence the next day as punishment. He cleverly persuades his friends to trade him small treasures for the privilege of doing his work. He then trades the treasures for Sunday School tickets which one normally receives for memorizing verses, redeeming them for a Bible, much to the surprise and bewilderment of the superintendent who thought "it was simply preposterous that this boy had warehoused two thousand sheaves of Scriptural wisdom on his premises—a dozen would strain his capacity, without a doubt." BACKGROUND: Samuel Langhorne Clemens (November 30, 1835 – April 21, 1910), better known by his pen name Mark Twain, was an American author and humorist. He wrote The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and its sequel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885), the latter often called "the Great American Novel". CONDITION: Condition is Good/Very Good.         A Monograph of the Genus Crocus.

London, Dulau and Co., 1886. 4to (310 x 250mm). pp. viii, 326, xx , (10), with 1 double page coloured map, 81 fine handcoloured lithographed plates after drawings by the author and numerous woodcut vignettes of views. Contemporary olive green morocco, covers with gilt border and fleurons at corners, richly gilt spine in 6 compartments, gilt edges, inner dentelles (lower corners a bit pumbed). A beautifully bound copy of the finest work ever published on the Genus Crocus. "George Maw (1839-1912) was the industrious author and illustrator of his great 'Monograph of the Genus Crocus' (1886). A many-sided and remarkable man, Maw was not a botanist by profession but a chemist and geologist, a manufacturer of encaustic tiles at Broseley, Staffs. His monograph, the result of ten years of inquiry, was the most complete work of its kind that has been published on any genus. The plates of this work are marvels of comprehensive detail and put to shame those of many more skilled draughtmen. From a botanical point of view this work is a landmark..."(Blunt & Stearn p. 277 & 279). Maw collected in the Near East and North Africa. Plate 17 was never published.//An interesting association copy. On free endpaper the following has been written: "To Charles Maw from his affectionate cousin. The author. Benthall, Kenley Surrey Oct. 1886"//Nissen BBI, 1316; Stafleu & Cowan 5721.

        Anna Karenina

Boston and New York : Thomas Y. Crowell & Company , 1886 First English Language Edition and First U.S. Edition, Translated by Nathan Haskell Dole. Copyright date 1886 with no later dates or printings indicated. The general bibliographic consensus is that the other Tolstoy titles opposite the title page determine the book's issue [i.e. the fewer the earlier]. This edition has NO titles opposite the title page. A scarce collectible copy of this literary classic. Bound in full leather, all page edges gilt, purple marbled end papers, raised bands on spine, gilt titles with elaborate gilt foliate decoration. Frontispiece is a photographic portrait of the author. Leather covers have some shelf wear especially at corners, with some scuffing to spine panel. Gilt titles are bright and clean. Binding is square and solid. Interior pages are clean with no markings and no foxing. The corner of the last blank page, pp.769/770 before a 3-page glossary, is bent and cut at the bottom corner, without impinging on the text. Frontispiece is a photographic portrait of the author. ***When he first read this novel, Dostoyevsky wrote: “Anna Karenina is sheer perfection as a work of art. No European work of fiction of our present day comes anywhere near it.” First issued serially in Russia in 1873; and first published in book form in Moscow, 1878; this translation was issued simultaneously in an English issue.*** Several binding variants were released, including brown, blue, and red cloth, though no priority exists. I am uncertain whether this is a deluxe binding or a rebinding at a later date. A celebrated classic and a significant book for any serious literature collection.

        Autograph, signed letters.

1886 - JOHNSTON, General Joseph E., CSA. Two Autograph, signed letters, dated 1/27/1886 and 3/13/1891, to a young lady. The first thanks her for her letter "in the stile of a young lady, from you who were a little girl in the days when I saw you often," and promises her a framed picture of him. (With traces of glue and a tear with small loss to back page, not affecting text. 2ff., 8x5"). The second assures her that both uniform buttons he has sent were intended for her. "Will washing them with gold hide the dirt of six or eight and twenty years? I am afraid not." (Fine. 2ff., 7x4.5"). Like Lee, Johnston (1807-1891) was a Virginian of Revolutionary ancestry, who attended West Point. He distinguished himself against the Indians in Florida, and during the Mexican-American War. When Virginia seceded he resigned his commission as Brigadier-General and joined the Confederate Army. According to the DAB he was famous for remaining undefeated: "he disliked risks." His pessimistic, or perhaps realistic, view of the strength of the enemy led him to propose an armistice in 1865. After the war he served one term in Congress, the Commissioner of Railroads.

Grundzüge der anatomischen und klinischen Chemie. Analecten für Forscher, Aerzte und Studierende von Ludwig J.W. Thudichum.

. Berlin, Verlag von August Hirschwald, 1886, 8°, VIII, 348 pp., Halbledereinband der Zeit; St.a.Tit.. First Edition! - - Drabkin No. 162
