        Albemarle Sound to Cape Fear

London: Published by the Admiralty, 1886. Engraving. Printed on wove paper. In excellent condition with the exception of some expertly mended tears along the edges of the sheet. Image size: 25 1/4 x 38 1/2 inches. A superb admiralty chart of the North Carolina coast, produced by the British Hydrographic Office. The British Hydrographic Office was founded in 1795 by George III, who appointed Alexander Dalrymple as the first Hydrographer to the Admiralty. He immediately set to work but it was not until 1800 that the first Admiralty chart was published of the waters around Quiberon Bay in Brittany. Unlike the U. S. Coast Survey the Hydrographic Office was given permission to sell charts to the public and they produced a great number of sea charts covering every corner of the globe. Most of the Admiralty charts produced by the Hydrographic Office delineated coastline as well as high and low water marks and record depth of water as established by soundings. In addition these charts included information on shoals, reefs, and other navigational hazards that plagued mariners across the world. Thanks to the innovations of Sir Francis Beaufort, who developed the Beaufort Scale of wind strength, the British Hydrographic Office became one of the leading producers of sea charts. This large chart covers the Albemarle Sound to Cape Fear in North Carolina. Water depths and sand bars are all carefully recorded, as are the various lighthouses along the coastline. There are two inset maps of Hatteras Inlet and Ocracoke Inlet on the left edge of the sheet, as well as three compasses to the right. This is an important sea chart of this area and a wonderful example of the maps produced by the British Hydrographic Office.

        Autograph letter signed in full

      - The "committee" of which Chausson speaks was likely composed of members of the Société Nationale de Musique. Becoming the Société's secretary, in 1886, allowed Chausson to become more closely involved in Parisian intellectual and musical circles, and as a result, to develop a more "elaborate and intensely dramatic style." The Société was founded in 1871 by Camille Saint-Saens, Cesar Franck, Alexis de Castillon, and Romain Bussine. 1 page. Small octavo. Dated "Saturday evening" [between 1886-1899]. In black ink on letterhead of the Société Nationale de Musique. In French (with translation). Chausson would like his correspondent to come to his home to inform committee members of works to be performed on a forthcoming orchestra concert."Would you please take the trouble to come to my home next Monday at 2 o'clock to let the committee know which works you are presenting at the orchestra concert."Creased at folds and slightly overall.

Sketch of the Career of Richard F. Burton

1886 - RICHARDS, Alfred Bates, WILSON, Andrew, and BADDELEY, St. Clair. A Sketch of the Career of Richard F. Burton. London: Waterlow & Sons, 1886. 12mo, original half brown cloth, stiff glazed decorated card boards; pp. [4] 96. $1500.Second edition of this contemporary biography of “the celebrated Eastern traveler, author and linguist,” with photographic frontispiece portrait. This copy from the library of Alfred Kinsey’s Institute for Sex Research, with its bookplate and Kinsey’s ownership inscription (“Alfred C. Kinsey, 6-18-45”).Three different authors trace the life, travels and adventures of a "very extraordinary man, who has toiled every hour and minute… distinguishing himself in every possible way. He has done more than any other six men in Her Majesty's dominions, and is one of the best, noblest and truest that breathes" (page 37). "This is a curious little book, often overlooked in studies of Burton, but it deserves closer attention. Of special note is the frontispiece, pp. 84-96, which prints a scrap of Burton's autobiography and pages 79-82, which contain a 'List of Captain Burton's Works'" (Casada 369). With Woodburyprint photographic frontispiece, bearing Burton's printed facsimile signatures in English and Arabic. This edition reprints and updates A Short Sketch of the Career of Captain Richard F. Burton by "An Old Oxonian" (1880). Penzer, 305-06. Decorative monogrammatical bookplate of C.J. Peacock. Owner signature of Alfred C. Kinsey, with bookplate of the Institute for Sex Research. Kinsey founded the Institute in 1947, in part, "to create the most complete and most scientific data bank on human sexuality ever compiled… Kinsey hired and carefully trained a team of interviewers to gather more case histories… and he also collected a staggering cache of books, 'how to' manuals, primitive artifacts and implements of an erotic or sexual nature; these were housed at the Institute's library" (ANB). Considering the translated erotica he published through the Kama Shastra Society, Burton likely would have appreciated Kinsey's work. Kinsey had an interest in Burton's: in 1948, in fact, he enlisted Gershon Legman (best known for his scholarly studies of erotic humor) as a bibliographer to "help locate such obscure rarities as… the 16 original volumes of Richard Burton's Arabian Nights with their complex and lengthy footnotes on Levantine sexuality" (Mikita Brottman, Funny Peculiar). Title and library marking written on spine in white ink.Interior generally clean, with foxing mostly confined to free endpapers; Kinsey's inscription still easily legible. Front joint tender, small, old repair to foot of rear joint; boards with light edge-wear, mild toning to decorations. An excellent copy of a scarce work in near-fine condition, with a notable and intriguing provenance. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde

London: Longmans, Green and Co., 1886., 1886. FIRST EDITION, octavo, pp. 141; [1], blank; [1], advertisement; [1], blank. Handsomely bound in recent full black Morocco, gilt titles to spine, marbled endpapers. The first hardbound issue, with the salmon cloth bound in at rear. Internally very clean. An attractive copy. The classic mystery crime novel/ horror story (or Crawler as Stevenson called it), inspired by the case of the Edinburgh body snatchers Burke and Hare, was written in just three days, although it was shelved by the author for three years as he considered it too disturbing for publication. Jekyll and Hyde is a chilling masterpiece work; a brilliantly suggestive, resonant study of human duality by a natural storyteller.
