La Cuisine Creole: A Collection of Culinary Recipes, From Leading Chefs and Noted Creole Housewives, Who Have Made New Orleans Famous for its Cuisine

New York: Will H. Coleman, 1885. Octavo, 268 pages. First edition, state "A" according to BAL. A classic American cookbook, and one of the great classics of Creole cuisine. The first book on the subject, it was anonymously printed in 1885, but it is generally accepted that Lafcadio Hearn is the author. This work has been almost continuously in print since this original issue. Some light wear to textblock at edges, a bit shaken. Some scuffing and edgewear to the brownish-green cloth with gold and black title and decorations to front board, dusty pink endpapers. Overall, a near very good copy. This copy comes from the extensive Hearn collection compiled by Grinnell Jones and contains a receipt dating from 1945 from Goodspeed's Book Shop selling the book to Mrs. Grinnell Jones for $60, as well as the original Goodspeed's price in pencil to the front pastedown. [Perkins, Lafcadio Hearn, A Bibliography, page 10; Johnson, American First Editions, page 94; BAL 7913; Bitting, page 221; Cagle 348; Uhler 115 (later edition)].

        Pl. 17 Pukala

published in London by Sampson Low, Marston, Searle and Rivington 1885 - An extremely detailed hand-colored lithograph of a native Hawaiian flower by Mrs. Francis SInclair, published in London by Sampson Low, Marston, Searle and Rivington in 1885. Overall this print measures 10.4X14.5". This print is of superior quality, and in good condition with bright crisp paper and radiant coloring. Isabella McHutcheson moved to Hawaii after her marriage in 1863 to her cousin Francis Sinclair. Their family were the first European settlers to live on the island of Ni`ihau. Isabella was the niece of Elizabeth McHutcheson Sinclair who had famously bought the island of Niihau from King Kamehameha IV for $10,000 in gold in 1864. Isabella was born in Stirling, Scotland in 1840 and from a very young age she showed a real artistic proclivity. Part of her childhood was spent in New Zealand where she first acquired an interest in botany as well. During the years that her husband Frank ran the family ranch, Isabella Sinclair occupied her time collecting botanical specimens, painting watercolor sketches of the plants, and preparing a collection that eventually became a book: "Indigenous Flowers of the Hawaiian Islands." She took a specific interest in the plant life of the Waimea and Olokele regions which she compared to the New Zealand species she was familiar with. She painted a series of watercolors and identified each specimen with its botanical name (provided by Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker), natural habitat setting, Native Hawaiian name and blossoming period. This book was the first in existence to feature color plates of Hawaiian flowers and plants. With 44 color plates in all the book was an exquisite cross section of Native plants. Some foxing/staining and creasing. Some residue from tape and additional marks in margins.

Adventures of Huckleberry Finn: (Tom Sawyer's Comrade)

New York: Charles L. Webster and Company, 1885 New York: Charles L. Webster and Company, 1884. First trade edition, first printing, first state. (The first in cloth, following sheep binding and salesman's dummy issues. All definitive points present: frontispiece has table with tablecloth visible under bust, Heliotype Printing Co. imprint; pg. 9 has "Decided" instead of "Decides"; Pg. 13 lists phantom illustration on pg. 88 "Him and another Man"; Pg. 57 error "with the was" 11 lines up from bottom of text; pg. 155 missing last digit of page number-- unstamped, technically the true first state. Correct trade issue straight fly on pg. 283 [sorry, no bulge!]. BAL's third state of the title page, not a cancel; 1884 date on copyright page. Pg. 143 has "l" in "Col." missing, broken type "b" in "body." No signature mark on pg. 161.) About Very Good condition. A restored copy with sturdy binding but spine rebacked patchily, new endpapers. Pen scribbles on frontispiece and first page of text. A few stray smudges and light stains to pages but overall in nice shape. Corners bumped with exposed tips. Gilt lettering fairly strong. Cloth mottled, a bit stained, and rubbed. Faint tidemark along bottom margin of pgs. 289-304. Wear near head. A nice copy of a masterwork of American literature.

The Birds of Haiti and San Domingo

Boston: Estes and Lauriat, 1885. First edition.. The rear side (verso) of some plates show a touch of faint foxing, all of the text and hand-colored plates are very bright and clean, the recent half-morocco binding is very attractive; a tight and clean copy in near fine condition.. Pp. (2), 7-198; with 22 hand-colored plates and 1 monochrome map, 2 text-figures. Recent one-half straight-grained green morocco leather, spine with five raised bands titled in gilt on black leather and red leather labels in two compartments, over English pale green marbled boards with pale green endpapers (original printed green wrappers bound in at rear), 4to (287 x 225 cm). This volume provides the synonymy, description of plumage, and notes for each species. The hand-colored plates in this copy are particularly bright and clean. This work was issued in four parts dated 1844 (parts 1-3) and 1885 (part 4); the edition was limited to 300 copies only. There is no limitation page in the volume but the front wrapper of each part is labeled with a small red number of 291 (part 1), 245 (part 2), 168 (part 3) and 256 (part 4). Since the highest of these numbers is 291, it seems to confirm an edition of only 300 copies. The wrapper of part 1 has been slightly trimmed with no effect to the text. The title page bears the small name-stamp of ornithologist Ed N. Harrison. There are no other ownership marks of any kind. See also Fine Bird Books (1990), p. 87, Wood, p. 300 and Zimmer, p. 138.

        KING SOLOMON'S MINES

Cassell & Company Ltd, London 1885 - the very scarce first edition, first issue with the diagnostic textual missprints - page 10: "Bamamgwato", page 122: "let twins to live"; and page 307: "Wrod". The catalogue at the back is dated 5G. 8.85 (i.e. August 1985). 2,000 copies were printed of the first edition but only 1,000 were initially bound up with the Cassell catalogue for August at the end - and this is copy is from that first binding. Another 500 copies were shipped to the American publishers for issue there, with the remaining 500 copies bound up in October 1885 with the publishers catalogue for that month. Pp. vi, 7-320 + 8 adverts folding frontispiece map. This is a good solid copy, seemingly "restored" at some time; the end papers are of contemporary Victorian patterned paper, but are probably not original. The catalogue bound in at the end of the book consists of only 8 pages and it would appear that the central 8 pages i.e. 2 double leaves in the centre of the gathering are missing: whether they were never bound is unknown. Dated 5 G.8.85 Original red brown cloth binding with black lettering and and decoration, dulled gilt lettering to the spine. Binding good with some general wear and rubbing, cloth somewhat marked, spine slightly scuffed at head/tail. Contents good and tight, folding frontispiece with a professionally repair to closed tears using Japanese tissue paper to the reverse, some general reading wear, slight red mark to the lower corner of the first few pages, little spotting and a few pages, no inscriptions. A good copy of the first edition, first impression. Despite the few faults a very rare first edition, first issue and at a realistic price. Size: 8vo [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Circa 1885 Japanese Erotic Apparatus Catalog, hand-colored illustrations, circa 1885

Unknown, unknown 1885 - (Place not known) Japan, circa 1885, by our estimate; possibly as early as 1827, by others. Octavo, 17 pp, light brown wraps, wraps and pages probably of rice paper. Stitched binding. Creasing of covers, some peripheral wear, some apparent light soiling to covers. About very good. Text in Japanese; therefore I'm unsure of the exact vintage or character of this piece - but it is striking in its two pages of hand-colored illustrations of what are apparently erotic apparatus articles for sale. A singular piece for the erotica collector. Please see scans. L38n [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        Zalacca Edulis [Salak Palm]

      C. Muquardt, Brussels 1885 - A fine example of the spectacular botanical work by Berthe Hoola Van Nooten, from 'Fleurs, Fruits et Feuillages Choisis de l'Ile de Java'. Similar to the sago tree, the Salak Palm is native to Indonesia, and its edible spherical fruit is covered by a prickly, lizard-like epidermis. It belongs to the order of Palmaceae , which, as Hoola Van Nooten remarks, was regarded by the renowned English botanist John Lindley as "the most interesting of the vegetable kingdom; as well as on account of the majestic aspect of their towering stems, crowned with foliage still more gigantic, as from the character of their grandeur which they impress upon the landscape of the countries they inhabit; their immense value to mankind as affording nourishment, clothing and numerous objects of economical importance, and the prodigious development of their reproductive organs." Hoola Van Nooten had accompanied her husband to Jakarta (Batavia), capital of Java, where he died. She was left with debts to pay and a family to support. With great ingenuity, she managed to get a selection of her paintings chromolithographed and published under the title Fleurs, Fruits et Feuillages Choisis de l'Ile de Java Peints D'Après Nature , the first edition of which appeared in 1863-4. "Van Nooten was clearly more than competent, for the splendid tropical plants? have been depicted with great skill. She managed to accentuate the splendour of each species by adopting a style that combined great precision and clarity with a touch of neo-Baroque exuberance, revelling in the rich forms and colours of the tropics." (L. Tongiorgi Tomasi An Oak Spring Flora p.330) Cf. Nissen BBI 931; cf. Stafleu & Cowan TL2 3025; cf. L. Tongiorgi Tomasi An Oak Spring Flora 87. Chromolithograph, by P.Depannemaeker. Very good condition apart from some very minor foxing and a small orange spot in the lower right corner of the sheet. [Attributes: First Edition]

Original playbill for the P.T. Barnum's circus spectacle, featuring Jumbo

Merrihew Print, J. Spencer Smith, Chestnut Street, circa 1882, Philadelphia 1885 - Original circus playbill measuring 395 x 142 mm, printed on both sides, split at central fold, very good condition. Barnum and Bailey bring Jumbo to Pennsylvania. Scarce and highly ephemeral playbill from the golden age of the Barnum and Bailey circus, featuring woodblocks of P.T. Barnum and Jumbo, as well as the Roman hippodrome races. A collision of different typefaces amidst four woodblocks, the playbill was printed locally to advertise the week of shows commencing 30 April. Jumbo was purchased from the London Zoo in 1882 and Barnum's partnership with fellow showman James Bailey ended in 1885, providing a three-year timeframe for the printing of this playbill (the three owners - Barnum, Bailey and Hutchinson - are clearly indicated). And what a spectacle it must have been, filling the broadmeadow below Dickinson street in Philadelphia. In addition to Jumbo the elephant, the playbill boasts a further another 29 trained elephants and no less than 10 giraffes. In fact, the circus boasted an entire zoological exhibition within its boundaries, here spruiked as "2 Mighty Menageries Containing every notable Wild Beast, Bird and Reptile known to Naturalists". The reverse of the handbill boasts the brilliant street parade, Roman hippodrome races and over 1000 rare and curious freaks. Of special interest is an "ethnological" exhibit including so called Aztecs, the last of the Montezumas, a wild girl, giants and midgets, and the wild man of Borneo. This bill proclaims the exorbitant costs of staging the circus, compared to the relatively modest admission price of 50 cents for adults and children half price.

First scientific survey of Maui, and the First official map of the Island commissioned by the U.S. Government following Hawaii's annexation.By far the largest and most detailed antiquarian map of Maui, it represents the first accurate survey of the island, the product of exacting trigonometric surveys. The present edition of the Alexander map depicts Maui during an especially critical and eventful period in its history, shortly after the Hawaiian Islands were annexed to the United States in 1898, and the map acted as the authoritative geographical source on the island for the next generation.
