Beiträge zur Kenntnis der Nervenfasern. (Diss.).

. Abh. k. bay. Akad. Wiss., 15/2. Selten - Erstdruck! - Theodor Boveri's (1862-1915) Dissertation "Beiträge zur Kenntnis der Nervenfasern" (Contributions to the Study of Nerve Fibers). - siehe - DSB II, pp. 361-365

LOVELY CONTEMPORARY CRIMSON CRUSHED MOROCCO, RICHLY GILT, BY M. LORTIC (stamp-signed on front turn-in), covers framed by gilt French fillets accented at sides and corners with filigree tooling, central panel semé with 15 horizontal rows of either six or seven roses; raised bands, spine gilt in compartments with central rose and with curling tools at corners and sides, DEEP BLUE CRUSHED MOROCCO DOUBLURES with gilt fleuron roll frame, crimson watered silk endleaves, marbled paper flyleaves, all edges gilt. Original printed paper wrappers bound in. In a matching felt-lined, morocco-lipped marbled paper slipcase. With 66 etchings by Jules Adeline, including 34 images, 32 of these in two states. Verso of marbled flyleaf with leather bookplate of Laurent Meeus; verso of front flyleaf with morocco bookplate of Suzanne Courtois. Wittock "La Bibliothèque de Laurent Meeus," 533 (this copy). Small, faint smudge to tail of title page, otherwise A CHOICE COPY, clean, fresh, and bright internally, and IN AN ABSOLUTELY SPARKLING BINDING. This autobiographical novel set in the world of porcelain collectors was sumptuously bound by Marcellin Lortic (1852-1928), scion of a family highly regarded in the trade. The Lortic name was made famous in the history of French binding by Marcellin's father Pierre Marcellin Lortic (1822-1892), a leading Parisian binder for 40 years, working at the same time--and producing work as highly regarded--as Trautz-Bauzonnet and Capé. Our binder established himself independently in 1884, and soon developed an elaborately panelled and richly gilt style. His work became, at its time, a contentious dividing point between traditionalists and modernists, both among binders and collectors; Duncan & De Bartha notes that his admirers and detractors were styled, respectively, "Lorticophiles" and "Lorticophobes." The present binding shows off Lortic's considerable skill as a gilder, almost dazzling the eye with gold, and the brilliant state of the morocco indicates that the binder used only the highest quality materials. The art critic and novelist Jules François Félix Husson, called Champfleury (1821-89), was a porcelain expert who curated the collection at the famed Sèvres porcelain factory. This story of a violin made of faience (a type of glazed earthenware) gently mocks the mania of collectors like himself. It was illustrated by his friend Jules Adeline (1845-1909), who captures the beauty of both the faience and of his native Rouen, which was the most frequent subject of his art. Our copy was once in the impressive library of Belgian bibliophile Baron Laurent de Meeus (1872-1950), one of the founders of petrochemical giant Petrofina. Auction records indicate that our previous owner Suzanne Courtois was a bookbinder as well as a collector of fine bindings.

        The Battle of Gettysburg.

New York: Joseph A. Joel, 1885. - Single sheet, mounted and framed, (25 ½ x 39 inches). Fine engraving (slightly toned). First edition. Engraved by Sartain after the painting by Rothermel. "In the years after the Civil War, Pennsylvania's Thomas Hovenden and Frederick Rothermel became famous for their vast historical canvases. The world imagines the Battle of Gettysburg primarily through Rothermel's monumental depiction of the battle that sits on the floor of the Pennsylvania State Museum (it was too large to hang on the wall), although it is a composite of several scenes from that epic three-day struggle rather than a literal depiction of any one moment" (Pencak, pp. 73-74). "Artist Rothermel had his canvas photographed in four sections, then pieced them together, doing 'requisite touching along the lines,' for the engraver to use as a model for the plate. Still, it took Sartain four years to complete it. The central figures, highlighted by their white shirts, were painted hatless, allowing Rothermel to emphasize their humanity and individuality - something not easily done with faces shadowed by the visors of kepis or the brims of soft hats" (Neely and Holzer, p. 211). Willam Pencak, "Historic Pennsylvania: An Illustrated History." Mark E. Neely and Harold Holzer, "The Union Image: Popular Prints of the Civil War North."         "Wyanoke Coaching Club, September 13th 1885"

New York: Long & Heppner, 327 East 34th Street, New York, 1885. (COACHING) Photo image 10 x 14 inches, 14-3/4 x 20 inches overall. Albumen print, made on the occasion of the group's journey "From Slevin's Snug Hotel, 211 and 213 Bleeker St., to Boulevard Hotel, College Point, L.I.". Faint waterstain to upper corner of mount, away from photograph, else fine . A technically superb and imposing time exposure (some movement in the tree branches overhead), showing close to a hundred elegantly-attired Club members, a handsome four-in-hand behind them, at, presumably, their destination at the end of this Sunday excursion. Not surprisingly, they appear to be a prosperous and fairly young crowd: all are men, and one holds a banjo, although the prevailing atmosphere appears to be a serious one, perhaps a result of their successful exertions. An engaging and important historic record of New York coaching in its glory days

Inocybe rimosus. Bull. ( Inocybe de patouillard ?). Très belle aquarelle originale (30 x 41 cm) datée 12 octobre 1885. Exceptionnelle aquarelle : 4 + 2 + 3 + 1 champignons. (in Souvenirs entomologiques, Tome X). Original watercolor depicting 10 mushrooms. Very nice watercolor with inscriptions by Fabre himself (names of mushrooms and date). "In Sérignan, my final step, mushrooms lavished me their seductions, as they abound in the surrounding hills, forests of oaks, arbutus and rosemary. In recent years, such wealth has inspired me a crazy project: the effigies of collecting with this it was impossible to keep in kind in an herbarium. I started to paint life-size, all species in my neighborhood the largest to smallest. The art of watercolor is unknown to me. Anyone, I've never seen it, I would invent .         DAPHNIS AND CHLOE, A PASTORAL ROMANCE

London: Vizetelly & Co, 1885. n. Hardcover. 220 x 156 mm (8 5/8 x 6 1/8"). xii, 155, [1] pp. Translated into English by Rev. C. V. Le Grice. ELEGANT CONTEMPORARY CERULEAN BLUE CRUSHED MOROCCO, GILT, BY M. RITTER (stamp-signed on front turn-in), covers with complex lobed frame composed of plain and dotted gilt rules and curving olive branches accented with small floral tools, tiny birds, and bow-and-quiver ornaments; raised bands, spine compartments with the same bow-and-arrows tool as centerpiece, SCARLET MOROCCO DOUBLURES adorned with a field of 11 horizontal rows of four or five kissing gilt turtle-doves, patterned silk free endleaves, marbled flyleaves, top edge gilt. In a (faintly used) blue morocco-backed chemise and slipcase. WITH 82 DISTINCTIVE ENGRAVINGS, comprised of five decorated section titles, nine plates (as called for), one of these plates with three extra states: black and then cyan on China paper, another reduced and unlettered; and eight with two extra states: black and cyan on China; eight head- and tailpieces with two extra states (black and cyan on China); and 25 EXTRA ILLUSTRATIONS, seven of these after Charles Eisen.Spine just slightly sunned, one plate with minor marginal smudge, otherwise A VERY FINE COPY, clean, fresh, and bright internally, with rich impressions of the engravings, and in a lustrous, virtually unworn binding. This is a handsomely bound edition of Longus' classic pastoral romance enhanced by engravings from two important editions of "Daphnis," along with seven additional engravings by Rococo master Charles Eisen (1720-78). The full-page engravings are from the designs of Prud'hon (1758-1832) and Gérard for the edition of the Amyot translation published by Didot in 1800 (Ray 76), and the head- and tailpieces are reproductions from the plates designed by the Prince Regent, Philippe d'Orléans (1674-1723), for his edition of 1718 (Ray 2). The Eisen plates, which feature mischievous putti, appear to be among those done for Dorat's "Epîtres Héroiques et Amoreuses," published in 1766 (Ray 29). Ray asserts that "the harmless sensuality of first love has never been so winningly conveyed" as in Prud'hon's designs, and although he indicates that Philippe's work is not at the highest level, he says that the plates "do tell the story in their halting way, and the background landscapes in some of the larger plates have a naïve appeal." They are actually better than that, and while one can readily distinguish Philippe's plates from the elegant decorations of the professionals, the former have undeniable appeal because of their animation, expansive design, and wealth of skillfully realized and absorbing detail. Our luxurious Belle Epoque binding was expertly done by Parisian binder Michel Ritter (1853-98), who studied with and worked for Engel of Paris. His short-lived career in the late 1880s and early 1890s produced work of very high quality that is now seldom seen.

A well above average copy of an uncommon book rarely. found in nice condition. (#75573). First edition. According to Miller and Matthews, only about 1000 copies were printed, and some were for the American market. This copy has an inserted publisher's catalogue dated April 1885 (the earliest catalogue is dated March 1885). This unjustly neglected novel by a popular late nineteenth century English naturalist combines Jefferies' remarkable power of observation and his application of these observations into a philosophy based loosely on the Darwinian theory of evolution. Brian Aldiss (in Trillion Year Spree) observed that AFTER LONDON gave "memorable expression" to "the theme of nature reasserting its dominance," a theme which has achieved greatest popularity in our century. "AFTER LONDON stands with the works of Hudson and William Morris in rejecting modern, scientific times long before any disillusionment caused by the First World War set in." - Clareson, Science Fiction in America, 1870s-1930s 450. "AFTER LONDON is a first-class example of Victorian sf and proved very popular at the time; its influence can be traced through W. H. Hudson's A CRYSTAL AGE (1887) to John Collier's TOM'S A-COLD (1933) ..." - Clute and Nicholls (eds), The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction (1993), p. 642. "Unequal, but still a minor masterpiece." - Suvin, Victorian Science Fiction in the UK, p. 27. "... a remarkable book that deserves reading." - Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 1184. Anatomy of Wonder (1981) 1- 108; (1987) 1-53; (1995) 1-53; and (2004) II-567. Bailey, Pilgrims Through Space and Time, pp. 76- 77. Clarke, Tale of the Future (1978), p. 11.
