The introduction begins “In the preceding volumes of this series we have dealt with the structure, growth, and habits of the lower forms of life; in the present one we are to study Anthropology or the Natural History of Man. Philosophers have often endeavored to draw hard and fast lines separating the human race from the brute world, but with slight success; man differs from the rest of the animal kingdom, not so much in structure as in his mental superiority, and even here the differences, immeasurable great though they be, seem to be chiefly those of degree.” The Conclusion begins “Our wanderings, beginning at Australia and the South Seas, extending thence over both Americas, next through the Dark Continent, and lastly over Asia, have at length brought us to Europe, the home of the most cultured peoples, and here we must stop.” This volume is beautifully illustrated – and it definitely reflects the prejudices current in the late 1800s, including those of an “enlightened” author.

The Life of Samuel Johnson, LL.D. and the Journal of His Tour to the Hebrides

George Routledge and Sons, London 1885 - Five volumes, Quarto. Illustrated with mezzotint plates and hand coloured frontispiece and other plates after portraits by Sir Joshua Reynolds. This set extra-illustrated with the insertion of 108 portraits and thirty-four views (of these forty-nine are hand coloured). One of 500 numbered sets. According to Boswell's bibliographer Pottle, this "is the only edition which reprints the preface to Chalmer's edition (the ninth) - a book not commonly met with. It includes all the prefaces down to, and including, Croker's, with the sole exception of Walsby's (1826), adding biographical notices of the different editors. It is thus a very useful scondary source for a study of the various editions. The text of the Tour is apparently that of the fourth edition; the Life seems to follow the sixth . Johnson's own account of his early life is included, as well as London, The Vanity of Human Wishes, and the Drury Lane Prologue . The chief attraction of this edition was supposed to be the fine typography and the mezzotints from Sir Joshua Reynolds's portraits. . Only 500 copies were originally printed. It was, however, re-issued in 1891 in a cheaper edition, much inferior in appearance". [Pottle 97] Spines a little faded, else a fine set full brown crushed levant morocco, covers with geometric gilt patterns which are repeated on the spines, gilt board edges and turn-ins, brown-orange silk endpapers, all edges gilt, by Bayntun of Bath. Cloth slipcase with silk ribbon pull (case a little rubbed at edges) [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Three vintage photographs documenting the detonation of Flood Rock in the East River, October 10, 1885

[New York], october 10, 1885 - An extraordinary photographic record of the controlled detonation of Flood Rock in the narrow tidal straight called Hell Gate in New York City's East River. The detonation was part of a nearly 70-year project to improve the navigability of the Hell Gate channel - found at the meeting of the East River, Harlem River, and Long Island Sound. The explosion of Flood Rock, which was some nine acres in area, required 300,000 pounds of dynamite. It was one of the largest man-made explosions in the pre-atomic era - the blast was felt as far away as Princeton, New Jersey and created a geyser of water 250 feet tall. Fifty thousand spectators lined both shores of the East River to view the spectacle (NEW YORK) 3 vols., Each 6-1/8 x 9-3/8 inches (visible). Three vintage albumen prints on mounts, captioned beneath the image in type, "Raab, Photo. / 1536 3d Ave, N.Y." each dated Oct. 10th 1885 and titled "Before the Explosion -," "Explosion of -," and "After the Explosion of Flood Rock". Matted and framed, some light spotting to images and matte

        Auf dem Lande

Braun & Schneider, München 1885 - Achte auflage. A rare Meggendorfer panorama presented on leporello folds, with 10 panels [possibly the last two panels are missing]. The continuous scene that runs across the panels starts with families arriving on trains to pick berries in a forest. The scene then moves on to the animals in the forest and then the farmers working their fields at the edge of the forest. Then it goes on to show the children working at the farm, gathering kindle wood, and then on to the farm animals and to the river bank where the children are fishing and playing with their toy boats. With a large riverboat in the background [that says Bavaria on its side] there are the fishermen in the deeper waters of the river. The scene progresses to the other side of the river where there is more fishing and basket traps for fish and lots of ducks leading up to the shore where there is another farmyard. There is a verse, in German, running along underneath all 10 panels. The book was printed by Meisenbach, most likely using his newly invented halftone process. On inspection I believe that the main images were printed from screened halftone blocks and the colour added with several line blocks - giving a hand coloured look. One of the cloth backstrips between two panels has been replaced. There is some chipping to the upper board edges along the backstrip. Some of the joins are loose but all are intact and the panorama can be quite safely fully opened to be viewed in its full glory of over 3 metres! As mentioned above, I think that there should be 12 panels. Each panel: 19x31 cm. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Providence: What Cheer Print, [nd, but ca. 1885]. - Broadside, 29 1/4 x 10 1/2 inches, with 6 1/2 x 8 1/4-inch wood engraving, signed by Jackson's Print, of Prof. Reynolds onstage with flying demons, a cauldron, and various displays on a table. Printed on inexpensive advertising paper, now a light brown tone. Three minor holes, one barely affecting the image. In very good condition. A marvelous and extremely rare example of late 19th- century American advertising ephemera for Prof. H.B. Reynolds, "the world renowned sorcerer, necromancer and magician." The wood engraving shows the Professor on stage with a few of the elements to be seen during his performances. These include demons, birds, and cards in various stages of flight, a boiling cauldron, two separate card displays, and a table with three objects used in the act (including an additional demon's head). Measuring nearly two and a half feet in height, the text of the broadside details the wonders the audience will see. These include "original and more marvellous illusions than was [sic] ever performed by the Ancient Egyptians or the Necromancer of India. The wonderful power of producing realities from nothing and commanding articles to be constructed from the ashes of the earth. His marvellous power of conjuring is manifested by merely asking for or moving his hand that his desires are complied with." Reynolds also claimed to be "cabalistic in his superiority of multitude of mankind, allowing himself to be bound with 100 feet of cord in the hands of the most expertitious in knot tying; when in a moment of unseen gesture he frees himself from the cords that bound him and is found within the silent enclosure of a structure whose walls have been permanently secured with screens and nails, locked and sealed, and bound with ropes." Although much detail is provided regarding Reynolds' skills and attributes, the actual place of performance is not indicated. Space was intentionally left blank for the name of the venue to be added when available, but the price of admission ("15 and 25 cts., Children under 10 years, 15 cents") and performance times ("Doors open at 7 p.m. Oracles 8 p.m.") are noted. Printed in Providence, the name of the printing house, What Cheer Print, is derived from the Narragansett Indian's greeting to Roger Williams in June 1636 ("What cheer, Netop" [friend]). A fascinating example of late 19th-century American advertising ephemera. Extremely rare, not in OCLC, but one copy in the Smith Magic Collection at Brown University.

      J. Rothschild, Paris 1885 - Quarto. Illustrated with 510 drawings. With an extensive index. This work was first published in 1868 in two small volumes. He had published "Les Promenades de Paris, 1867 - 1873" a sumptuous work on public gardens and parks. The first part of "Les Jardins" is a history of ancient gardens in Greece, Rome, Egypt and Asia, and also of gardens in the Middle Ages, in the Italian Renaissance, French gardens in history to the present [1880s] etc. The second part "Theory of the Art of the Garden" is more theoretical with discussions of principles of formal gardens, public gardens, modern [1880s- requirements for city squares, bridges etc. and discussions of trees and plants to use. In Chapter V some considerations for some French parks: the Bois de Boulogne, the Bois de Vincennes and others, as well as some public walkways in Turkey, Egypt and India. Some rubbing to edges, slight browning throughout rebound in full green morocco, extra gilt, spines with raised bands, lettered in gilt, inner morocco pastedowns with extra gilt, silk free endpapers, top edges gilt.       London, Paris, New York & Melbourne: Cassell & Company, Limited, 1885 - Octavo, pp. [i-v] vi-vii [viii] [1] 2-442 [443-444: ads] + 8-page publisher's catalogue dated "4.85" inserted at rear, original bevel-edged ochre cloth, front panel stamped in black, spine panel stamped in gold, rear panel ruled in blind, top edge untrimmed, other edges rough-trimmed, brown floral patterned endpapers. First edition. According to Miller and Matthews, only about 1000 copies were printed, and some were for the American market. This copy has an inserted publisher's catalogue dated April 1885 (the earliest catalogue is dated March 1885). This unjustly neglected novel by a popular late nineteenth century English naturalist combines Jefferies' remarkable power of observation and his application of these observations into a philosophy based loosely on the Darwinian theory of evolution. Brian Aldiss (in Trillion Year Spree) observed that AFTER LONDON gave "memorable expression" to "the theme of nature reasserting its dominance," a theme which has achieved greatest popularity in our century. "AFTER LONDON stands with the works of Hudson and William Morris in rejecting modern, scientific times long before any disillusionment caused by the First World War set in." - Clareson, Science Fiction in America, 1870s-1930s 450. "AFTER LONDON is a first-class example of Victorian sf and proved very popular at the time; its influence can be traced through W. H. Hudson's A CRYSTAL AGE (1887) to John Collier's TOM'S A-COLD (1933) ." - Clute and Nicholls (eds), The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction (1993), p. 642. "Unequal, but still a minor masterpiece." - Suvin, Victorian Science Fiction in the UK, p. 27. ". a remarkable book that deserves reading." - Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 1184.         William T. Sherman Talks Politics, Religion, and Princeton-Yale Football with a Suitor

1885 - Five Autograph Letters Signed to Mrs. Mary Audenried, widow of Sherman's former Chief of Staff. 18 pages, April 21, 1885 - February 8, 1887. "Rachel went to Princeton last week. Thanksgiving Day - to witness the ball play - the day was horrid and she has been under the weather ever since having taken cold."Sherman, during an affair with a young widow, advises her on handling her teenage daughter: "Let her play her own game.Tell her to take her own way and you choose yours. If she becomes a nun she can do no harm and is dead to the world" while criticizing the power of the Catholic Church. He also muses about his own mortality, complains that he "shall not stay long" at his Senator-brother John's home because "there is too much politics there to suit my taste," and relates that his daughter caught a cold at the Yale-Princeton Thanksgiving Day football game. Historic BackgroundWilliam T. Sherman (1820-1891), a West Point graduate and Mexican War veteran, served as a corps commander under General Grant in successful Union campaigns down the Mississippi and in Tennessee, then took command of the western armies when Grant was reassigned to the Virginia theatre of war. His capture of Atlanta and subsequent "March to the Sea" through Georgia, was followed by a swift campaign north through the Carolinas to force the surrender of the last major Confederate army. He was Commanding General of the U.S. Army from 1869-1883.In 1850, 30-year-old William T. Sherman married 26-year-old Ellen Boyle Ewing (1824-1888); they had four daughters and four sons. Mary Colket was 18 when she married 24-year-old Joseph C. Audenried in 1863. In 1867, they had a daughter, Florence. Audenried was a staff officer with General Grant at Vicksburg and General Sherman to Atlanta and on the "March to the Sea." He remained with Sherman for the rest of his life, in the Indian Wars in the West and then on to Washington when Sherman became Commanding General. Col. Audenried was 41 when he died in 1880. In "Citizen Sherman: A Life of William Tecumseh Sherman" (Random House: New York, 1995), biographer Michael Fellman writes of an affair between Sherman and Col. Audenried's widow, 25 years younger than the General. The earliest of these five letters was written by the 65-year-old married General to the 40-year-old widow in 1885. Sherman's wife was 64 when she died in 1888.1. "With Catholics the church is Greater than God himself and they will abandon Father & Mother if the Church Commands."Autograph Letter Signed ("Affectionately / W. T. Sherman"), 3-1/2 pages, 5-1/4" x 7-3/4. St. Louis, April 21, 1885. "I have read your letter carefully and now write to repeat my advice of this morning that you allow Florence [her 18-year-old daughter] rope. Let her play her own game.Tell her to take her own way and you choose yours. If she becomes a nun she can do no harm and is dead to the world. Natures God intended all women to be mothers but if all breed too fast, wars, pestilence and famine come to destroy the surplus.I confess that I feared Florence would err on the other side, but if she has been indoctrinated let her go her course - you keep up your house ready & willing to afford her at all times a safe refuge.I remember well my feelings when Tom [29-year-old son, Thomas Ewing Sherman, his eldest living son] left me, his sisters & all for the Church and my judgment remains the same that it was an awful crime against nature for I had a right to depend on him in my old age to look after those dependent on me. I hope Cump [18-year-old son, Philemon Tecumseh Sherman, his youngest child] will take his place but even in that I have not absolute confidence."2. "Nearly every body agreed that St Louis was looking up - surely it is time, for ever since 1861, it has been behind."Autograph Letter Signed ("Most affectionately / W. T. Sherman"), 4 pages, 5-1/2" x 9-1/4". Army Building, on Houston & Green, New York, November 2, 1886. "I got b. (See website for full description)

Two Items Relating to General Gordon Including: Printed Pamphlet]: SULLIVAN, Edward. The Truth About Gordon; [With: Signatures of Gordon's Sister ('M. A. Gordon') and Sister-in-Law ('M. F. M. Gordon').

      - Pamphlet: [London: National Union of Conservative and Constitutional Associations, 1885]. Series A. - No. 1.]. 1885. Octavo (ca. 21,5x13,5 cm). 4 pp. Paper worn, with creases, stains and tears on extremities. Overall a good pamphlet. The signatures are cut from letters, and laid down on part of an octavo leaf from an autograph album, ca. 17,5x15 cm. The signatures are captioned in a contemporary hand. Both aged, but in good condition. The very rare pamphlet is by Sir Edward Robert Sullivan (1826-1899), Lord Chancellor of Ireland, with only one electronic copy found in Worldcat. The pamphlet is a sharp criticism of the government of William Gladstone which is blamed for the death of Gordon. The initial paragraph reads: 'Before the British Elector makes up his mind as to whom he will entrust the honour of his country at the General Election, it will be well for him to "read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest" a plain, unvarnished history of the betrayal and death of one of the noblest heroes of this or any other age - GENERAL GORDON.' The text consists of several paragraphs, namely: 'Why he was sent', 'What he demanded', 'The hope that ended in despair', 'The end', 'Interest before duty' and 'Our duty and interest'. The autograph note by Gordon's sister is on a slip ca. 4x10,5 cm, and reads 'Believe me yours very truly - M.A. Gordon'. The autograph of his sister-in-law (the wife of his brother General Samuel Enderby Gordon, 1824-1883) is on a slip ca. 4,5x7 cm, and reads 'Believe me Truly yours M. F. M. Gordon'. "Gordon withstood a siege of 317 days supported by two white officers with native troops wasted by famine and disease. Then, on 26 January 1885, a fall in the level of the Nile enabled the Mahdists to succeed in a final assault on Khartoum. Gordon was speared by dervishes in his palace, and his dissevered head was displayed in the Mahdists' camp. Wolseley's river steamers came in sight of Khartoum on 28 January, then withdrew. Gordon's body was never found" (Oxford DNB).
