Autograph Letter, signed ("SL Clemens"), to his British publisher, Andrew Chatto, regarding the plans for publication of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

Hartford, Ct, april 1, 1884 - Important letter from Samuel Clemens to his British publisher Andrew Chatto at Chatto & Windus -two brief pages dense with early instructions regarding international aspects of the forthcoming publication of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Hartford Apl 1/84 Dear Mr. Chatto: Good - that settles Hughes! Now you can settle Tauchnitz - I enclose him. Chas L. Webster (my nephew by marriage and future publisher) will write to you about this time. I will send him your present letter so that he may take note of the early sheets suggestion. We can easily send the early sheets if we don't forget it, for we shall have this book in type & printed many months before we issue it. I shall secure Canadian copyright. Truly Yours, S.L. Clemens Chatto had begun corresponding with Clemens in March 1884 concerning Huckleberry Finn, and matters concerning translation and foreign publication, with a request for early sheets. William L. Hughes, in Paris proposed to put out French translations of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn, and Chatto had vouched for him. Twain also instructs Chatto to make arrangements with Tauchnitz, the famed Leipzig publisher of continental editions of English-language authors, for an authorized edition. The letter also introduces his nephew Charles L. Webster to Chatto. "Charley", as Clemens called him, undertook the logistical work connected with publication of Huck Finn. Chatto had requested early proof sheets so that he could begin typesetting, with the aim of publishing British editions simultaneously with the New York edition. "Charley" did not forget, and "advance sheets" were sent to Chatto by Webster on 19 September 1884. It was only in November, when the defaced plate was discovered, that the intended publication schedule came apart. The Chatto & Windus edition (London) and Dawson Brothers (Montreal) edition were published on 10 December as foreseen. Clemens was in Toronto on publication day to establish legal domicile for these editions and Webster applied for foreign copyright in the author's name. The Tauchnitz (Leipzig) edition was published in printed wrappers dated January 1885. Production issues connected with replacing the offending page resulted in publication of the Charles L. Webster (New York) edition being delayed until 18 February 1885. This is one of only two known letters from Clemens to Chatto discussing Huck Finn (a note dated 3 March 1884 informed Chatto that "I am keeping Huck Finn back till next fall"). Webster, as Clemens' publisher, handled subsequent correspondence (transcripts of several related letters accompany this letter). This letter serves to indicate that Clemens' intention, from the beginning, was for the British edition to be derived from the American printing of the book 22.5 x 14 cm. (9 x 5-1Ú2 in.). 26 lines, in pencil, on both sides of a single sheet. Fine condition, in cloth folder. Provenance: Paul Bonner (Sale in Feb, 15, 1934 lot 71); James S. Copley Library. Mark Twain Project ID UCCL 11941. For the publishing history, see Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (2003), eds.         FOUR WORKS: HISTORY OF OUR OWN TIMES. THE FOUR GEORGES & WILLIAM IV. THE FRENCH REVOLUTION. THE REIGN OF QUEEN ANNE

Chatto & Windus, London 1884 - 222 x 143 mm (8 3/4 x 5 5/8"). 15 volumes. FIRST EDITIONS of the last three works. Pleasing contemporary dark blue three-quarter morocco by Bickers & Son (stamp-signed on verso of front free endpaper), raised bands, spine gilt in single-ruled compartments, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt. Tiny chip to top of one spine, three joints with short cracks at head, minor dulling from leather preservative, first volume with hinge open at rear (but the volume quite sound), one leaf with older tissue paper repair to head-edge tear (into text, but legibility not lost), other trivial defects, but still quite an attractive set in excellent condition, clean and fresh internally, and in bright, solid bindings showing little wear. This is an appealing group of four scarce works, three of them first editions, by a father and son who also wrote novels, and brought the same engaging, readable style to their non-fiction. Justin McCarthy (1830-1912) was a journalist and novelist whose major work "History of Our Own Times" (1878) was an enormously popular account of Britain during the reign of Queen Victoria, written from a Liberal point of view. It went to a number of editions, and our 1901 edition of his major work covers the accession of Queen Victoria to the General Election of 1880 in four volumes, with a fifth volume supplement updating the history to the queen's Diamond Jubilee in 1897. McCarthy began publishing "History of the Four Georges and William IV" in 1884, but failing eyesight and ill health forced him to hand the work over to his son for completion; volume II appeared in 1890, and volumes III and IV in 1901. Justin Huntly McCarthy (1859-1936) penned two histories of his own, included here: "The French Revolution" (1890, 1897; four volumes) and "Queen Anne" (1902; two volumes). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Voyage en Angleterre. (Juin 1884.). Notes. -

o.O. o.V. [Compagnie des Chemins de Fer du Midi] 1884,. 1 Bl., 73 Seiten Text (hektographierte Handschrift), 1 Tabelle als Falttafel, 13 Tafeln (meist als Falttafeln), einfacher HLnbd. (steife Broschur), 31 x 21,5 cm. - In französischer Sprache. - Etwas bestoßen; der Einband gering fleckig, einige wenige Tafeln etwas unpräzise gefalzt. Sonst und insgesamt gutes, gepflegtes Exemplar. [This unpublished account of a French railroad engineer's study trip to England was mimeographed for an obviously small number of readers within the French Compagnie des Chemins de Fer du Midi. Deharme's account goes deep into technical aspects of railroad-related engineering. Topics covered are railway stations in London and Liverpool and the Mersey tunnel. The plates - mostly folding plates - show technical details of constructions. One of the plates depicts in detail the tunnel boring machine for the Mersey tunnel. A signature and dedication from Deharme's own hand is on the front fly leaf - the dedication being for a fellow railway engineer. A second signature from Deharme's own hand is on the first text page at the end of a printed dedication for Ernest Blage - then director of the Compagnie des Chemins de Fer du Midi. - This manuscript-like publication is not listed in any major railway library - nor to my knowledge in any library whatsoever. - Despite of some minor chafing to the boards and some rather unprecise folding of the folding plates this is a lovely and very attractive book]..

Diary of Ten Years of an Early Settler in Western Australia ; and also A Descriptive Vocabulary of the Language of the Aborigines

London: M. Walbrook, 1884. Octavo, joints a little rubbed yet fine overall in original gilt lettered publisher's blue cloth. With an important West Australian vocabulary. A detailed first-hand account of pioneering days at the Swan River settlement. The author, an Irish candidate for the Bar, was attracted by the lure of large land grants in Western Australia and travelled to the colony in 1830. This book publishes Moore's correspondence with friends, family and colleagues in Britain; so forming a valuable account of day-to-day life interspersed with gossip, natural history observations and other details. Diary of Ten Years of an Early Settler is a significant record of interpersonal contacts between early colonists. For example, a rambling account of some 16 pages describes an expedition by Moore and other settlers with a view to inspecting their grants. The party was guided by 'Mr. Dale, an officer in the 60th regiment, the first who had penetrated beyond the Range, was selected to point out the most practical route'. Lieutenant Robert Dale, explorer and draughtsman, is today best remembered for his magnificent lithographic panorama of the Swan River settlement. Much of Moore's book records his personal contacts with Aboriginal tribes, and a descriptive vocabulary exceeding 100 pages forms and appendix with a separate title-page and preface. From the collection of Robert Edwards.

An Archive of Over 100 significant Letters and Documents in the Period 1907-1919 of One of the Earliest Telephone Companies In Ohio

      - The collection contains 125 pieces of original correspondence including both TLS (Typed Letters Signed) and ((LS) Letters Signed. What began as a small electrical shop for the repair and manufacture of telephone equipment in 1884 as the north Electric Works grew to become the North Electric Company in 1889. By the early 20th Century the company became one of the most prominent manufacturing business in Ohio employing over 300 workers. After being in business for over a century, the business first was taken over by Ericsson and the by IYTY. These letters pertain to the problems stemming from a patent for the automatic ringing mechanism, switch boards and operators as well as dealing with their manufacture under Canadian Parents which became know as the Telechronometer Co. The big change ended the flat-rate system and introduced meters which could measure the length of calls and, of course, increase the cost to the consumer. For the next sixty years, the telephone company became a monopoly enforced by patent, licenses, bonds, under the Bell and AT&T trademarks. Size: Quarto

        Under the Palisades

Charles Scribner's Sons, New York 1884 - Frederic Cozzens was one of America's greatest marine artists. Like nearly every other great marine artist, he was thoroughly acquainted with every aspect of ship construction and the art of sailing. He is best known for his paintings of great American yachts of the latter half of the 19th century, which were commissioned by many of New York's leading yachtsmen. In 1884, he expanded his audience by making a series of lithographs of his paintings. The first and most brilliant series was American Yachts, Their Clubs and Races from which this print comes. Under the Palisades shows three steam propelled ships, the most prominent of which is Jay Gould's steam yacht Atalanta , a 236 foot iron screw boat, in front of the Palisades on the Hudson. Jacobsen, Frederic Cozzens. Marine Painter , New York: 1982. Colour-printed lithograph, mounted on card.

A second signature from Deharme's own hand is on the first text page at the end of a printed dedication for Ernest Blagé - then director of the Compagnie des Chemins de Fer du Midi. - This manuscript-like publication is not listed in any major railway library - nor to my knowledge in any library whatsoever. - Despite of some minor chafing to the boards and some rather unprecise folding of the folding plates this is a lovely and very attractive book]. 902 Gramm.         Journals of Australian Explorations

Brisbane: James C. Beal, Government Printer, 1884. Octavo, a fresh bright copy in the original blind-embossed and gilt lettered green cloth, bookplate. The Gregory brothers, inland exploration and the search for Leichhardt. Remarkably fine copy in original condition of the complete edition of the journals of eight expeditions undertaken by the Gregory brothers in Western, Northern and Central Australia between 1846 and 1861. This was the first comprehensive publication of the Gregory journals, many of which had not been printed before in their entirety. The Gregory brothers played an important role in the history of exploration in Western Australia, and Augustus also led expeditions further afield into unmapped regions of the continent. In 1855, on Governor FitzRoy's recommendation, Augustus Gregory was selected by the British Government to lead the North Australian Exploring Expedition. The party of eighteen included his brother Henry as second-in-command, the botanist Ferdinand von Mueller, and the naturalist and artist Thomas Baines. Starting from the mouth of the Victoria River in August 1855, Gregory covered over five thousand miles in his sixteen-month expedition opening up vast areas for pastoral settlement. He was awarded the gold medal of the Royal Geographical Society on his return and is one of the greatest inland Australian explorers. In 1858 Gregory made one further expedition in search of Ludwig Leichhardt and his party, but was forced by drought to abandon the search. This book includes material related to the search. Francis Gregory served his apprenticeship under his brother Augustus in Perth. His exploration with the North West Australian Exploring Expedition of 1861 was to become the basis for later pastoral settlements on the north-west coast.
