REDWOOD AND LUMBERING IN CALIFORNIA FORESTS.

San Francisco: Edgar Cherry & Co., 1884. - [2],107pp. plus twenty-four albumen print photographs, each on an individual thin card mount within a purple printed border, twenty- one with purple printed titles, the other three with no printed title. One photograph with an additional pencil note identifying one of the loggers as "Billy Russel." Quarto. Original blue cloth, title stamped in gilt on front board, neatly rebacked with original spine laid down. Neat repairs to corners and edges of binding. Very clean internally, the images very clean and crisp, and the text quite clean as well. Overall, a very good copy. In a cloth clamshell case, leather label. An important early Californian photographically illustrated work, and an "impressive verbal and pictorial description of the logging industry on the northern coast of California" (Kurutz). The photographs are amazing and must have shocked eastern audiences by showing men standing before redwood trunks thicker than the man is tall. Other photographs show logging trains, felled timbers, groves of redwoods, and logging methods utilizing the steam- powered "donkey engines." In the preface Cherry complains that the "almost constant fog that hangs over the Redwood belt makes it difficult also to obtain good views of the forests and logging camps," but that he wanted to illustrate the book with photographs rather than engravings "to set aside all doubt as to the enormous growth of the Redwood, the number of feet per acre, and the superior qualifications that will recommend it to builders and others. In as much as engravings are usually cut from sketches, drawn perhaps by enthused artists, perfect satisfaction is not given; but with photographic views, which cannot lie, argument as to truthfulness is unnecessary." The pictures in the book vary from copy to copy, and it appears that no two copies are identical in the pictures included or the order in which they are presented. The photo captions were applied manually with an ink stamp, but some of the captions in this copy are blank (as is often the case). The volume was prepared to promote the use of redwood, the superior qualities of which are emphasized. The brief history of redwood lumbering is recounted, and the processes by which the trees are felled and cut are related in great detail. There is also an article by Kellogg on the relationship of the redwoods to other cedar trees. COWAN, p.525. KURUTZ, CALIFORNIA BOOKS ILLUSTRATED WITH ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHS 7; p.16. GOLDSCHMIDT & NAEF, THE TRUTHFUL LENS 135. HOWELL 50:361. FRITZ, CALIFORNIA COAST REDWOOD 1209. MILES & REESE, CREATING AMERICA 74.

        Over the Cape May Course

Charles Scribner's Sons, New York 1884 - Frederic Cozzens was one of America's greatest marine artists. Like nearly every other great marine artist, he was thoroughly acquainted with every aspect of ship construction and the art of sailing. He is best known for his paintings of great American yachts of the latter half of the 19th century, which were commissioned by many of New York's leading yachtsmen. In 1884, he expanded his audience by making a series of lithographs of his paintings. The first and most brilliant series was American Yachts, Their Clubs and Races from which this print comes. Over the Cape May Course depicts a tense moment during the Regatta of 1873 in which the schooners Clio, Enchantress, Dreadnaught , the working schooners Sharpshooter and Reindeer , and the pilotboat Negus race neck and neck down the Cape May Course, south of the Jersey shallows. Beginning off Owl's Head, New York Harbour, continuing around the lightship in the Five Fathoms Bank off Cape May, New Jersey, and finishing at the Sandy Hook lightship, the Regatta was a spirited 300 mile race from which the Enchantress emerged victorious. Jacobsen, Frederic Cozzens. Marine Painter , New York: 1982. Colour-printed lithograph, mounted on card. Very good condition apart from a 3/4" loss in the right margin.

Royal Order of Kapiolani: Companion (Knight) Cross

Paris: Kretly, 1884. Red and white enamelled silver badge, approximately 40 mm. width, incorporating a red enamel Maltese cross, surmounted by a silver Hawaiian crown, with smaller silver crowns between the arms of the cross; central roundel of red enamel with a gold double-K monogram, surrounded by a white enamel band lettered in gilt "Kulia I Kanuu" ["Strive to Reach the Summit"]; small round gold portrait of Queen Kapiolani above the roundel; the reverse is similar but without the portrait and the roundel is lettered "Kulia"; with original yellow and red woven silk suspension ribbon; in very good condition. Rare Hawaiian Royal order. The Companion (Knight) Cross of the Royal Order of Kapiolani: a very good example of this attractive order, complete with its original ribbon. The order was instituted by King Kalakaua on 30 August 1880 to recognize services rendered to the kingdom, including in science, the arts, and the humanities; it was named by Kalakaua in memory of his wife Queen Kapiolani whose portrait appears in the small gold roundel above the monogram on the face of the badge. There were various grades of the Order, which was awarded a total of 177 times in all grades during Kalakaua's reign, and three more times by his successor, Queen Liliuokalani, ending in 1892. The Companion Order was awarded only during 1884, and given to a total of just sixty recipients along with a $50 annuity. This very order, in this exact class with identical ribbon, was used by Hawaii Post as the illustration for the $5 postage stamp in 2003. This is a rare order on the market, with Bonhams New York 6 January 2012 (lot 1259, $6435.00) the only recent sale that we have identified.

        Two Page Autograph Letter Signed

Two page Autograph Letter Signed ("Booker T. Washington"), on both sides of Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute stationery, dated 10 December 1884, to Mary C. Shannon of Newton, Massachusetts. Washington expresses his appreciation for the kind words of Shannon, refers to his meeting with Shannon at her Summer home, and mentions sending Shannon some "little books." He also mentions that "The school is very full of earnest and promising young men and women; and our work never looked more encouraging than now." Old folds from mailing, else fine. Washington was, and needed to be, a relentless fundraiser for the school, founded in 1881 with only $2,000 provided by the state of Alabama. His letters, especially on fundraising issues, are not uncommon, but letters written out fully by him (as opposed to secretarially) are scarce. Shannon was a wealthy New England woman who, in one form or another, financially supported African-American education efforts for forty years, dying in 1887. Despite some increasingly revisionist history about Washington's perceived role as an accommodationist, few individuals of any race or time period compiled such a record of accomplishment in the face of more concerted opposition. A nice letter handwritten relatively early in Washington's thirty-four year tenure at Tuskegee. .

Recherches sur la conductibilité Galvanique des électrolytes. [Parts] I, II.

Stockholm: P.A. Norstedt & Söner 1884 - 2 parts in 1 vol., with 1 lithographed plate, pp. [i, general title/wrapper], [1-3] 4-63; [1-3] 4-89 (the last leaf, verso blank, forming the rear self-wrapper), original printed wrappers, uncut and unopened, slight cracking to spine and a hint of browning round the edges, otherwise fine The rare offprint issue of Arrhenius’s landmark discovery of the theory of electrolytic disassociation. Arrhenius was awarded the 1903 Nobel Prize in chemistry ‘in recognition of the extraordinary services he has rendered to the advancement of chemistry by his electrolytic theory of dissociation.’ By 1880, ‘it was known that solutions of certain compounds conduct electricity and that chemical reactions could occur when a current was passed. It was thought that the current decomposed the substance. In 1883 Arrhenius proposed a theory that substances were partly converted into an active form when dissolved. The active part was responsible for conductivity. In the case of acids and bases, he correlated the strength with the degree of decomposition on solution. This work was published as Recherches sur la conductibilite galvanique des electrolytes and submitted as his doctoral dissertation. Arrhenius sent his work to several leading physical chemists, including Jacobus van't Hoff, Friedrich Ostwald, and Rudolf Clausius, who were immediately impressed’ (Biographical Encyclopedia of Scientists). The dissertation only gained Arrhenius a fourth class degree: Professor Sven Otto Petterson remarked ‘There are chapters in Arrhenius’ thesis which alone are worth more or less all the faculty can offer in the way of marks’ (quoted in DSB).

        The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

London: Chatto & Windus, 1884. 8vo, xvi, 438, (2), 32 pp. Illustrated. Original red cloth with gilt titles, pictorially stamped in black. Small booksellerÕs ticket on front pastedown, inscription dated December 22, 1884 (month of publication) on half-title. Small faint dampstain on upper cover, equally faint spotting on rear cover, printing flaw on page 132, a handsome copy. First English edition, first state (with the October 1884 publisherÕs catalogue), preceding the American edition by four months. This copy is bound with staples, while others were bound more conventionally with string. While there is no priority between the two, it is quite difficult to find staple-bound copies in desirable condition today as the ill-conceived English experiment with staples proved very unsatisfactory. The English Chatto & Windus edition was published during the first week of December 1884, with copies then being advertised as available and for sale. The copyright for the American edition was filed at about the same time, but copies were not actually issued until four months later. BAL 3414.

Houghton Mifflin, (Riverside Press), Boston 1884 - Octavo, 12 volumes. Three quarters leather. Complete set of Hawthorne's works. Gilt tooling and titles to the spine, top edge gilt. In very good condition. A nice set. The widely celebrated author has been revered not only by the public but by his literary contemporaries as well. Edgar Allen Poe said, "[t]he style of Hawthorne is purity itself. His tone is singularly effective-wild, plaintive, thoughtful, and in full accordance with his themes. We look upon him as one of the few men of indisputable genius to whom our country has as yet given birth" (McFarland, 1988). Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote later that "Nathaniel Hawthorne's reputation as a writer is a very pleasing fact, because his writing is not good for anything, and this is a tribute to the man" (Nelson, 1981). Henry James praised Hawthorne, saying, "The fine thing in Hawthorne is that he cared for the deeper psychology, and that, in his way, he tried to become familiar with it" (Porte, 1969). Lastly, the poet John Greenleaf Whittier wrote that he enjoyed the "weird and subtle beauty" in Hawthorne's tales (Woodland, 1985). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

NARRATIVE AND CRITICAL HISTORY OF AMERICA

Houghton, Mifflin and Company, Boston and New York 1884 - 279 x 191 mm (11 x 7 1/2"). Eight volumes. Edited by Justin Winsor. FIRST EDITION. Simple but pleasing contemporary black half morocco over marbled boards, raised bands accented with gilt rules, gilt titling, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt. With more than 1,000 in-text illustrations, maps, and charts. With the bookplate of Samuel Nelson Sawyer in each volume. Minor wear to raised bands, faint darkening at edges of leaves, otherwise an excellent set, the attractive bindings very sturdy, and the fresh, clean leaves with few signs of use. Compiled by the prominent librarian-turned-historian Justin Winsor (1831-1897) and published over a period of six years, this ambitious work covers the history of North and South America, including the history of the Spanish, Portuguese, and British on the continent. Winsor gathered 39 scholars and contributors for the work but, in the end, wrote roughly half of the eight-volume publication himself, including most of the critical and bibliographical essays. Credited for his influence in professionalizing the field of librarianship, Winsor is probably best remembered for his role in founding the American Library Association in 1876, and for serving as its first president for 10 years. As the Librarian of Harvard College, a position he held for the rest of his life, he made crucial changes that are taken for granted in today's model of the university library: open stacks for students and a unification of campus libraries. His interest in history led him to write numerous books, the "Narrative and Critical History" being among his most successful, having attained the honor of being a standard reference source in its time. Our former owner Samuel Nelson Sawyer (1858-1939) served for almost 20 years as a trial judge in the Supreme Court of New York and two years on the appellate bench. He was very active in the Masons, achieving the title of "Most Worshipful Grand Master.". [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        AN OLD MAN'S LOVE

1884 - A Novel. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1884. Original wrappers. First American Edition, published as Number 373 in Harper's "Franklin Square Library." This was Trollope's last novel, published after his death. John Gordon heads off to South Africa to find his fortune, in order to be able to wed Mary Lawrie, and returns with it three years laster -- only to arrive on the day after Mary had accepted the proposal of the elderly bachelor William Whittlestaff, who had become her benefactor.~AN OLD MAN'S LOVE was not serialized but was published in two volumes by William Blackwood of Edinburgh in November or December 1883. Harper published this edition on April 11, 1884, paying ten pounds to Blackwood for sending them a set of advance sheets.~"The Cheapest Publication in the World" according to the Philadelphia Press, Harper's Franklin Square Library had been founded to deserve that description -- tabloid-sized, printed in triple-column (later double-), with no illustrations, priced at ten (later fifteen) cents.~The Franklin Square Library was intended to. present works of some of the most popular authors to American readers "who may not find it convenient to encumber themselves with books or periodicals too costly to be cast aside after perusal." This new series and its advertising logic sounded the death knell for collectors. Their fragility, format, and ephemeral makeup discouraged most buyers from keeping them. Despite the thousands of copies printed of each title in the series, few have survived. Trollope editions in the series are of the utmost rarity and those that have survived are generally defective. First editions published in newspaper format after early 1878. are rarely seen for sale and are usually found only in private collections and in certain research libraries. [W. Smith]~This copy is complete in 40 pages of double-column text (the front page serving as self-wrapper, its top half devoted to series and novel headings). This copy does have an additional outer (advertising) wrapper. Condition is very good (a bit of archival mending along the spines of the dual wrappers, but otherwise just minor edge-wear). Smith 58. Housed in a custom clamshell case with inner four-flap wrapper. The first copy we have seen in our thirty years in business. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
