HISTORY OF IDAHO TERRITORY SHOWING ITS RESOURCES AND ADVANTAGES; WITH ILLUSTRATIONS DESCRIPTIVE OF ITS SCENERY, RESIDENCES, FARMS, MINES, MILLS, HOTELS, BUSINESS HOUSES, SCHOOLS, CHURCHES, &c.

San Francisco: Wallace W. Elliott & Co., 1884. - [9],20-304,[1]pp. plus maps and numerous unnumbered leaves of lithographs. Folio. Publisher's cloth, tooled in blind and gilt. neatly rebacked in red leather stamped in gilt. First few leaves with light wear at edges, some light soiling. Some light wear and soiling to text, a few scattered edge tears. Final advertisement leaf with one marginal loss, not affecting text. Very good. The first "full-scale history of Idaho" (Howes). This work contains illustrations of Idaho Territory's prominent citizens and their homes, including many specific ranches and farms; many of the buildings in Boise as well as street-scenes and views of other towns; mines, mills, and other industries of the territory; and a map of the territory with an inset of Old Faithful Geyser. The frontispiece is a view of Shoshone Falls on the Snake River. The introductory remarks indicate that the text has been divided into twenty-six sections for easy reference, including a history of the Northwest Territory; missionaries and immigration; a description of Idaho Territory's physical features, climate, soils, and natural resources; the "state of society in the Territory," biographical sketches of prominent citizens, and public schools; the native peoples and animals; and "miscellaneous historical matters." In the section entitled "Primitive Inhabitants," the native tribes of the area are listed, with a brief description of each: "The Pend d'Oreilles are peaceable, industrious, and, in the main, self-supporting. Many of them have adopted the dress, and, in a measure, the customs and habits of civilized people. The Kootenay's are an indolent, thriftless people, too cowardly to fight, too indolent to work, and many of them too lazy to hunt. The Shoshones are well supplied with good horses, and warmly and decently clad, with the single exception, dirt." And so forth. There is an extensive section on the Nez Perce, encompassing the Nez Perce War and efforts to relocate the tribe to a reservation. This work contains a remarkable group of lithographs illustrating ranches, houses, and properties in the Territory, making it a tremendous visual resource for the American West. HOWES I2 "aa".         Raven, The

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1884. - "Once Upon a Midnight Dreary, While I Pondered, Weak and Weary "The First separate American and first edition illustrated by Gustave Doré Probably the Finest Example Extant in the Plain Dust Jacket and Publisher's BoxDORÉ, Gustave, Illustrator. POE, Edgar Allan. The Raven. Illustrated by Gustave Doré. With comment by Edmund C. Stedman. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1884. First separate American edition and first edition illustrated by Doré. Large folio (18 1/4 x 14 3/8 inches: 463 x 365 mm.). 14, [2], [19]-23 pp. Title-page illustration by Elihu Vedder. Twenty-six magnificent full-page plates by Gustave Doré, all but the first and last with captioned tissue-guards. Publisher's gray cloth pictorially decorated in gilt and black, spine decoratively lettered in gilt and black, rear cover with pictorial design in black. Al edges gilt, brown coated end-papers. An absolutely mint and pristine copy. Probably the finest example extant in the exceptionally rare plain paper dust jacket and the publisher's blue paper printed box (slightly worn at edges) housed in a blue cloth clamshell case.Gustave Doré's final work.In 1884, Doré produced 26 steel engravings for an illustrated edition of Edgar Allan Poe’s gloomy classic "The Raven." Like all of his illustrations, the images are rich with detail, yet in contrast to his earlier work, particularly the fine lines of his Quixote, these engravings are softer, characterized by a deep chiaroscuro appropriate to the mood of the poem. We can see in the plate depicting the first lines of the poem, the haunted speaker, "weak and weary," slumped over one of his many "quaint and curious volume[s] of forgotten lore." and also the raven tapping, "louder than before," at the window lattice.By the time Doré’s edition saw publication, Poe’s most famous work had already achieved recognition as one of the greatest of American poems. Its author, however, had died over thirty years previous in near-poverty. A catalog description from a Penn State Library holding of one of Doré’s "Raven" editions compares the two artists:The careers of these two men are fraught with both popular success and unmitigated disappointment. Doré enjoyed phenomenal monetary success as an illustrator in his life-time, however his true desire, to be acknowledged as a fine artist, was never realized. The critics of his day derided his abilities as an artist even as his popularity soared. One might say that Poe suffered the opposite fate—recognized as a great artist in his lifetime, he never achieved financial stability. We learn from the Penn State Rare Collections library that Doré received the rough equivalent of $140,000 for his illustrated edition of "The Raven." Poe, on the other hand, was paid approximately nine dollars for his most famous poem.

A Modern French Master Illustrator Fine, attractive copy of this beautifully illustrated book, masterfully incorporating his drawings with the text, in style of Johannot. Leloir (1853-1940) was one of the true professionals in the history of French illustration. Books with his designs appeared over five decades. Working by preference with stories set in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, he was at pains to make his costumes as accurate as possible. It was his celebrity in this field, indeed, which led Douglas Fairbanks to bring him to Hollywood as artistic director of The Iron Mask (1929). His illustrations are abundant, precise, and objective ... With 12 full-page photogravure plates ("by the Goupil process") and numerous sketches throughout the text by Maurice Leloir. 1 vols. 4to. A Modern French Master Illustrator. Fine, attractive copy of this beautifully illustrated book, masterfully incorporating his drawings with the text, in style of Johannot. " -Ray, French Illustrated Books. As for A Sentimental Journey, one of his masterpieces, Ray observes that "every episode in Stern's short text finds its appropriate visual commentary ... "

        The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

      - London: Chatto & Windus, 1884. 8vo, xvi, 438, (2), 32 pp. Illustrated. Original red cloth with gilt titles, pictorially stamped in black. Small booksellerÕs ticket on front pastedown, inscription dated December 22, 1884 (month of publication) on half-title. Small faint dampstain on upper cover, equally faint spotting on rear cover, printing flaw on page 132, a handsome copy. First English edition, first state (with the October 1884 publisherÕs catalogue), preceding the American edition by four months. This copy is bound with staples, while others were bound more conventionally with string. While there is no priority between the two, it is quite difficult to find staple-bound copies in desirable condition today as the ill-conceived English experiment with staples proved very unsatisfactory. The English Chatto & Windus edition was published during the first week of December 1884, with copies then being advertised as available and for sale. The copyright for the American edition was filed at about the same time, but copies were not actually issued until four months later. BAL 3414. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Erste Ausgabe! - James Friedrich Ludolf Hobrecht (31. Dezember 1825 in Memel - 8. James Hobrecht (1825-1902) was responsible for the construction of the Berlin sewers. - - Garrison & Morton No.1624 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

An Archive of Over 100 significant Letters and Documents in the Period 1907-1919 of One of the Earliest Telephone Companies In Ohio

The collection contains 125 pieces of original correspondence including both TLS (Typed Letters Signed) and ((LS) Letters Signed. What began as a small electrical shop for the repair and manufacture of telephone equipment in 1884 as the north Electric Works grew to become the North Electric Company in 1889. By the early 20th Century the company became one of the most prominent manufacturing business in Ohio employing over 300 workers. After being in business for over a century, the business first was taken over by Ericsson and the by IYTY. These letters pertain to the problems stemming from a patent for the automatic ringing mechanism, switch boards and operators as well as dealing with their manufacture under Canadian Parents which became know as the Telechronometer Co. The big change ended the flat-rate system and introduced meters which could measure the length of calls and, of course, increase the cost to the consumer. For the next sixty years, the telephone company became a monopoly enforced by patent, licenses, bonds, under the Bell and AT&T trademarks.. Quarto.

An indispensable guide for ships navigating the southern coast of China at the end of the nineteenth century. The decades worth of data compiled here describe coastlines, depths, island formations, anchorages, tides, weather etc. We can find no bibliographic record for previous volumes and OCLC lists only one copy of both this edition and the 1874 edition. Some scattered foxing, overall a very nice copy of a book that most often would have found itself used to pieces on board a ship.
