Fine original portrait drawing of the composer in half-profile by the Viennese artist Benedikt Dolbin (1883-1971)

      - Signed by the artist with initials and with the composer's name to upper right corner. Undated, but most probably Vienna, ca. 1920. Executed in black pencil on the blank side of a sheet of stationery carrying the letterhead of Universal Edition in Vienna. 286 x 222 mm. "[Milhaud] was associated with the avant garde of the 1920s, whose abundant production reflects all musical genres. A pioneer in the use of percussion, polytonality, jazz and aleatory techniques, his music allies lyricism with often complex harmonies. Though his sources of inspiration were many and varied, his music has compelling stylistic unity." Jeremy Drake in Grove Music Online.Dolbin (pseud. Fred Pollack, 1883-1971) was born in Vienna and educated there. Trained as an engineer, he subsequently studied musical composition with Arnold Schoenberg and became a member of the Viennese group "Die Bewegung." He commenced drawing portraits of leading artistic personalities from ca. 1917 onwards for Viennese newspapers and journals. Because of his Jewish origins, Dolbin's work was banned in Austria in 1935, at which time he emigrated to the United States. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

First edition. Large 8vo, pp [8], 686. Generally considered the best book on the subject of the Mexican-American War (known as the Invasion Norte-Americana in Mexico) from the Mexican point of view. This is the first edition in book form, having first appeared in a newspaper. Bancroft praised the book, as it evidently shows that Roa Barcena had studied the sources both Mexican and American. Other scholars have praised it for its more favorable defense of Mexican resistance. He included a section on the history of the Texas conflict, which was the original cause of the war A fundamental text for the study of this war. Original calf over green mottled boards. Extremities of boards rubbed, but a very nice copy overall.

STORIELLA D'AMORE.

> Schickling, "Giacomo Puccini. Catalogue of the Works", 40, "As indicated in Kaye 1987, the beginning of the song is slightly similar to a passage in Mimi's aria in Act I of "La Bohème". Codice libreria 117292.

Fine large etching and drypoint of the guitarist, seated, by Félix Bracquemond (1833-1914)

1883. Béraldi: Les Graveurs du XIX Siècle 18, iv/iv. Bosch, born in Barcelona, settled in Paris in 1853, and became known as "Le Roi de la Guitarre." "He was a close friend of the painter Édouard Manet and posed for him many times, one portrait being used as illustration for one of Bosch's publications, Plainte Moresque op. 85, which is also dedicated to Manet. Besides many original compositions he wrote a Méthode de guitare (1891...) and an opera (Roger de Flor, 1868)... In Paris, Bosch was much praised at the aristocratic salons and had a large number of pupils, including the brothers Alfred and Jules Cottin... His best-known piece was to be his song collection Dix Mélodies, which was praised by Felipe Pedrell as a "true model of what a composer's inspiration may create in this genre"... Wikipedia Bracquemond was a prolific printmaker, active in Paris in the latter part of the 19th century. He received the "Grande Medaille d'Honneur" at the Universal Exhibition in 1900. He was in the circle of Manet, Degas, Fantin-Latour, and Auguste Rodin.. 450 x 325 mm. + wide margins. A fine impression on laid paper with printed titling below image. Signed in ink by the artist at lower right just below platemark. Slightly browned; margins slightly soiled with a few chips and small tears; lower outer corner creased; remnants of hinges to upper corners of verso.

YOUNG JAPAN: Yokohama and Yedo A Narrative of the Settlementand the City from th

New York 1883, Pratt. Black cloth, very good, neatly reback-. ed using the old spine, edges & corners worn, 2 volume set,. 418+522p., index, contens very clean, co-published by Kelly,. Yokohama, 14 x 23 cm. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION. A MOST IMPORTANT EARLY BRITISH PRIMARY RESOURCE ON JAPAN An important primary source, written by the former editor of the "Japan Herald," the "Japan Gazette," "Far East," "Nisshin Shinjishi" among several other publications, the author was especially qualified in reporting the news. This current work is his most exhaustive account of both foreign and Japanese activities in Yokohama from its early opening in 1858 back to 1789. * During this 21 year Period, history was made, for Japan was now open to the West, and the flow of ship and goods made Japan aware of her backwardness. Printed in Yokohama at the author's private printing office, this work covers the author's personal observations of the arrival of Lord Elgin, Mr. Alcock, Japanese experiences with foreigners, murdered Russians, assassinations of foreigners, the murder of Mr. Henry Heusken, Mr. Oliphant and rebel Satsuma forces, Ohara Mission, account of Choshu forts cannon attacks upon foreign vessels, Sir Harry Parks, life in Yokohama, trade, start of "Japan Times," Chamber of Commerce, &c. * This work also covers "The King of Liu-kiu's own Story. * Perhaps the most comprehensive early resource on Yokohama & foreigners there done during this period. * All editions were identical in this aspect, and the contents are identical. A contemporary insight to Yokohama life. ALWAYS RARE ! * NOTE ON THE PUBLISHER, PRINTING LOCATION OF THIS WORK: On the verso of the title page it states: Vol.1: "Printed at the Private Printing Office of the Author, No.16, Yokohama, Japan." . Vol. 2: "Printed at the "Japan Gazette" Office, no.70, Main Street, Yokohama, Japan." . While the title page states at the bottom, "London, Trubner & Co., Yokohama, Kelly & Co 1880, 1881" this book was only published in Yokohama, but distributed by Trubner in London. The publisher "Kelly" is referring to a later change in that publisher's name to "Kelly & Walsh." . Regardless of the above irregularities, the book was clearly privately printed in Yokohama at John R. Black's office. A very rare and early Yokohama printing in English. *** Color scans can be sent by email. Images displayed may not always be the exact photo of the copy in stock for sale at any given time. Frankfurt/M., Bokelmann, 1883. Gr.-8vo. (ca. 26 : 18 cm). Mit gest. Titel mit Vignette und 47 Ansichten in Stahlstich. 4 Bl., 247 S. Hellbrauner Orig.-Leinenband mit reicher Gold- u. Schwarzprägung; Vorderdeckel mit kl. Fleck (Aufhellung). Milano (Milan): Ditta Gaetano Brigola, 1883. First Italian edition, hardback rebound in half-leather with marbled paper covered boards. The spine has four raised bands and gilt titling, and possibly with Giovanni Verga's initials in gilt to the foot of the spine. 18 × 11cm, 308pp + index. Italian text. This copy has been signed twice by Luigi Capuana to Giovanni Verga. Firstly to the ffep, "A Giovanni Verga, affectionamente Luigi Capuana, Roma, 22 giugno 1885", and again to the portrait frontispiece. Both inscriptions are in ink. A rare first edition collection of short stories from Luigi Capuana, comprising Mostruosita, La Mula, Povero dottore!, Don Peppantonio, Evoluzione, Lo Sciancato, Raffinatezza, Comparatico, Bagni di sole, Maestro Cosimo, and Nota. This is an important book as it is signed from one of the most important advocates of the Italian Verist movement to another. Verismo was an Italian literary movement that started in the 1870s and lasted to the first years of the twentieth century, Capuana's novel Giacinta is regarded as the manifesto of Verismo. Condition: This book is in good condition but with some wear. The binding is rubbed to the spine ends and boards edges, and the pages are comprehensively foxed throughout. The inner binding is in good order but the rear hinge is starting. The book remains in good readable condition and comes with a remarkable literary provenance. PLEASE SEE THE COX AND BUDGE WEBSITE FOR FURTHER DETAILS AND TO SEE OUR FULL RANGE OF BOOKS. We welcome direct contact. MANY THANKS. . Signed by The Author. First Italian Edition. Half Leather.         Nuevo Mapa de Mexico.

New York: G. W. & C. B. Colton, 1883. - 4 sheets joined, (35 ¾ x 50 ¾ inches). Fine folding lithographed map with original hand color in full (some separation at corners of folds, some darkening from glue where sheets are joined). Original publisher's brown cloth gilt (extremities a bit rubbed). Provenance: From the important cartographical library of Warren Heckrotte, his sale, Rare Cartography, Exploration and Voyages, Part II, December 3, 2015, Lot 118. Later issue, first published in 1866 with "Nuevo Mapa del Imperio de Mexico" on the cover. Large-scale, detailed and quite rare folding map of Mexico, in Spanish, at a time of increasing U.S. investment, with railroads, both completed and projected, shown, with indication by color whether narrow or wide gauge, as well as roads, settlements, state boundaries, drainage, etc. with prime meridian at Mexico City. Includes Borderlands and Texas, running east from San Diego to Mississippi. This map was published in the midst of great railroad expansion in the region: the Southern Transcontinental Railroad was constructed between 1879 and 1881, and the Southern Pacific Railroad's "Sunset Route" was built from California to New Orleans by way of Yuma, Tucson, El Paso, and San Antonio. Farther north, predecessors of the Santa Fe Railroad were completed across New Mexico and Arizona by 1881 and 1882. This map seems to be based on Colton's map of the Empire of Mexico of 1866. Not in Phillips. Orozco y Berra 618 (1871 printing). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Story of an African Farm

London: Chapman and Hall, Limited, 1883. First edition. Full leather. Olive Schreiner (1855-1920) was a South African author, the ninth of twelve children born to a missionary couple. The Story of an African Farm is regarded as an important feminist novel, published by the author under a male pseudonym. "The tale centres round an ordinary Boer farm and depicts the hard, coarse, unlovely life of some of the Afrikander peasant farmersÂ…the work is certainly the most notable volume of fiction relating to South Africa undertaken up to this period by any writer of South African birth and education." (Mendelssohn, p.281). This first edition was published in an edition of 300 copies. Since it caused a sensation, first edition copies were often widely read and circulated, with expected wear and loss to the books. Here is the 2-volume first edition uniquely and fabulously rebound by renowned Sangorski & Sutcliff. The publisher's original cloth binding prominently featured ostriches on the spines of both volumes. In a nod to the original binding and a truly striking piece of craftsmanship, this set is rebound in full black ostrich skin with gilt top edge and hand-marbled endpapers. The condition of the binding is virtually as new. The contents are remarkably crisp, clean, and bright with no spotting or previous ownership marks. Even the untrimmed fore and bottom edges are clean and bright.

William Tecumseh Sherman on the Army’s Role in Building the Northern Pacific Railroad

Washington, D.C. 1883 - Autograph Letter Signed, April 5, 1883, to E.V. Smalley, Washington, D.C., on Headquarters Army of the United States. 3pp. Sherman comments on the close cooperation of the Army and the railroads. Key to the development of the American West, this was arguably the Army's most important role during Sherman's post-Civil War service. Partial TranscriptHeadquarters Army of the United States, Washington, D.C., Apl 5, 1883E. V. Smalley EsqNorthern Pacific Railroad New York CityDear Sir,"I beg to acknowledge your letter of April 4, and am gratified to know that the officers of the Northern Pacific Railroad recognize the fact that the Army has in all its stages aided in the location and construction of that most important highway, and desire some authentic statement of what those services have been. I know that the standing order and instructions from Army Head Quarters have been to afford any possible protection and assistance. But the details of the word have devolved on department and local commanders. In order to reach the conclusion you desire I will cause a copy of your letter to go out to Generals Terry and Miles with instructions to return as early as possible their statements. Which will be consolidated with any other official matter of record at these headquarters and sent you for your information. Meantime I am with great respect Your friend W.T. ShermanWilliam T. Sherman (1820-1891), a West Point graduate and Mexican War veteran, served as a corps commander under General Grant in successful campaigns down the Mississippi and in Tennessee. He then took command of the western armies when Grant was reassigned to the Virginia theatre. He was both recognized and criticized for his tactics of "scorched earth" and "total war," evidenced by his capture of Atlanta and "March to the Sea" through Georgia. This was followed by a swift campaign north through the Carolinas to force the surrender of the last major Confederate army. Sherman served as Commanding General of the U.S. Army from 1869-1883, during a period of Westward expansion and Indian Wars.
