        Nuevo Mapa de Mexico.

New York: G. W. & C. B. Colton, 1883. - 4 sheets joined, (35 ¾ x 50 ¾ inches). Fine folding lithographed map with original hand color in full (some separation at corners of folds, some darkening from glue where sheets are joined). Original publisher's brown cloth gilt (extremities a bit rubbed). Provenance: From the important cartographical library of Warren Heckrotte, his sale, Rare Cartography, Exploration and Voyages, Part II, December 3, 2015, Lot 118. Later issue, first published in 1866 with "Nuevo Mapa del Imperio de Mexico" on the cover. Large-scale, detailed and quite rare folding map of Mexico, in Spanish, at a time of increasing U.S. investment, with railroads, both completed and projected, shown, with indication by color whether narrow or wide gauge, as well as roads, settlements, state boundaries, drainage, etc. with prime meridian at Mexico City. Includes Borderlands and Texas, running east from San Diego to Mississippi. This map was published in the midst of great railroad expansion in the region: the Southern Transcontinental Railroad was constructed between 1879 and 1881, and the Southern Pacific Railroad's "Sunset Route" was built from California to New Orleans by way of Yuma, Tucson, El Paso, and San Antonio. Farther north, predecessors of the Santa Fe Railroad were completed across New Mexico and Arizona by 1881 and 1882. This map seems to be based on Colton's map of the Empire of Mexico of 1866. Not in Phillips. Orozco y Berra 618 (1871 printing). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Story of an African Farm

London: Chapman and Hall, Limited, 1883. First edition. Full leather. Olive Schreiner (1855-1920) was a South African author, the ninth of twelve children born to a missionary couple. The Story of an African Farm is regarded as an important feminist novel, published by the author under a male pseudonym. "The tale centres round an ordinary Boer farm and depicts the hard, coarse, unlovely life of some of the Afrikander peasant farmersÂ…the work is certainly the most notable volume of fiction relating to South Africa undertaken up to this period by any writer of South African birth and education." (Mendelssohn, p.281). This first edition was published in an edition of 300 copies. Since it caused a sensation, first edition copies were often widely read and circulated, with expected wear and loss to the books. Here is the 2-volume first edition uniquely and fabulously rebound by renowned Sangorski & Sutcliff. The publisher's original cloth binding prominently featured ostriches on the spines of both volumes. In a nod to the original binding and a truly striking piece of craftsmanship, this set is rebound in full black ostrich skin with gilt top edge and hand-marbled endpapers. The condition of the binding is virtually as new. The contents are remarkably crisp, clean, and bright with no spotting or previous ownership marks. Even the untrimmed fore and bottom edges are clean and bright.

William Tecumseh Sherman on the Army’s Role in Building the Northern Pacific Railroad

Washington, D.C. 1883 - Autograph Letter Signed, April 5, 1883, to E.V. Smalley, Washington, D.C., on Headquarters Army of the United States. 3pp. Sherman comments on the close cooperation of the Army and the railroads. Key to the development of the American West, this was arguably the Army's most important role during Sherman's post-Civil War service. Partial TranscriptHeadquarters Army of the United States, Washington, D.C., Apl 5, 1883E. V. Smalley EsqNorthern Pacific Railroad New York CityDear Sir,"I beg to acknowledge your letter of April 4, and am gratified to know that the officers of the Northern Pacific Railroad recognize the fact that the Army has in all its stages aided in the location and construction of that most important highway, and desire some authentic statement of what those services have been. I know that the standing order and instructions from Army Head Quarters have been to afford any possible protection and assistance. But the details of the word have devolved on department and local commanders. In order to reach the conclusion you desire I will cause a copy of your letter to go out to Generals Terry and Miles with instructions to return as early as possible their statements. Which will be consolidated with any other official matter of record at these headquarters and sent you for your information. Meantime I am with great respect Your friend W.T. ShermanWilliam T. Sherman (1820-1891), a West Point graduate and Mexican War veteran, served as a corps commander under General Grant in successful campaigns down the Mississippi and in Tennessee. He then took command of the western armies when Grant was reassigned to the Virginia theatre. He was both recognized and criticized for his tactics of "scorched earth" and "total war," evidenced by his capture of Atlanta and "March to the Sea" through Georgia. This was followed by a swift campaign north through the Carolinas to force the surrender of the last major Confederate army. Sherman served as Commanding General of the U.S. Army from 1869-1883, during a period of Westward expansion and Indian Wars.

1883. Béraldi: Les Graveurs du XIX Siècle 18, iv/iv. Bosch, born in Barcelona, settled in Paris in 1853, and became known as "Le Roi de la Guitarre." "He was a close friend of the painter Édouard Manet and posed for him many times, one portrait being used as illustration for one of Bosch's publications, Plainte Moresque op. 85, which is also dedicated to Manet. Besides many original compositions he wrote a Méthode de guitare (1891...) and an opera (Roger de Flor, 1868)... In Paris, Bosch was much praised at the aristocratic salons and had a large number of pupils, including the brothers Alfred and Jules Cottin... His best-known piece was to be his song collection Dix Mélodies, which was praised by Felipe Pedrell as a "true model of what a composer's inspiration may create in this genre"... Wikipedia Bracquemond was a prolific printmaker, active in Paris in the latter part of the 19th century. He received the "Grande Medaille d'Honneur" at the Universal Exhibition in 1900. He was in the circle of Manet, Degas, Fantin-Latour, and Auguste Rodin.. 450 x 325 mm. + wide margins. A fine impression on laid paper with printed titling below image. Chir., 29, 254-337. , 1883) in which he "coined the term "cachexia strumipriva" to describe the myxedema following total extirpation of the thyroid. His work on the subject led to a better understanding of the cause of myxedema." [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Rhyme? And Reason?

London: R. Clay, Sons, and Taylor for Macmillan and Co.,, 1883. Octavo. Original vellum, titles to spine gilt, triple rules to covers gilt, black coated endpapers, all edges gilt. Housed in a custom cream cloth slipcase. Frontispiece with tissue-guard, illustrated in the text throughout, 24 full-page. Vellum toned, boards bowed with some light spotting, some light marks to contents, front hinge starting, rear hinge slightly sprung; a very good copy. First edition, one of only five known copies in the rare vellum presentation binding, inscribed by the author on the half-title, "Lady Maud Wolmer with the sincere regards of the Author. Feb. 9, 1884." Lady Maud Wolmer (née Cecil) was the elder daughter of future Prime Minister Robert Cecil, 3rd Marquess of Salisbury. She first met Dodgson in 1871 on a visit to Hatfield House when she was a little girl: he spent three nights there to help celebrate a birthday, and described the visit as "one of the pleasantest visits I have ever spent" (Diary 6, 2001, p. 165). Dodgson returned the following year, and again at the end of the year, when "he took up the ritual of spending New Year's Day at Hatfield. Dodgson's story-telling became very much a part of his visits, and Dodgson invented some of the early chapters in Sylvie and Bruno expressly for the Cecil children" (Letters p. 212n). This copy is inscribed to Maud just a few months after her marriage to William Waldegrave Palmer, future 2nd Earl of Selborne, on 27 October 1883; he was styled Viscount Wolmer between 1882 and 1895. Dodgson remained friends with Lady Wolmer after her marriage: in the summer of 1889 he took his child-friend the actress Isa Bowman to lunch with the Wolmers and their daughter Mabel, nicknamed "Wang". One of an unrecorded but evidently small number of copies bound in vellum; this is the only such copy recorded by ABPC having sold at auction in the last 30 years. Dodgson's preference for a white binding for presentation dates back to the first Alice, but vellum is a difficult and expensive material to work with and Macmillan's binders more often supplied paper textured in imitation of white morocco (see following item).

        CHILDISH AFFECTIONS - Alma-Tadema.

Prijs: € 1.250,- (incl. lijst).

H.H. Hardesty & Co.,, 1883 Hardesty's Historical And Geographical Encyclopedia, Illustrated. [Atlas]. Special Virginia Edition, Giving a History of the Virginias with outline maps of Berkeley and Jefferson Counties, West Virginia.. Folio size book. Biographical Sketches of Eminent Virginians, written by R.A. Brock. Published: NY/Chi/Toledo: H.H. Hardesty & Co., 1883. 270 pages ( stated in the front.), the book is complete. Original half leather & cloth covers. 66 maps most being double pages. 12 maps of the Mideast (mostly Biblical). Plus there are 25 illustrations one of which is shown. VERY RARE BOOK Condition:The pages are clean and supple. There is no foxing nor folds other then some corners. There are no other stains due to handling. There are some minor edge tears; and the Berkeley/Jefferson County outline maps are on the same page back to back with a tear on the corner now repaired with archival book tape. Some of the maps are browned due to newspaper articles inserted between the page. If you have a specific map you want to see, please write and I will post it. The pages are firmly bound to the binding material. However, the leather and cloth covers are worn out. The covers are attached to the binding by an old cloth tape repair which is failing. The spine covering is missing. The book should be rebound but we decline to do this because we have found that often old map books are disbound and the maps individually framed or sold. Re-binding is often therefore counter-productive. We leave it to the buyer.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Good. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall.

        The Silverado Squatters.

London: Chatto and Windus, 1883. - 8vo., (7 ¾ x 5 ½ inches). Half-title, list of books by the same author. Sepia-toned frontispiece (occasional spotting and browning throughout). Original sage-green cloth decorated and lettered in sepia and gold (extremities bumped, spine lightly faded). Provenance: With the bookplate of Michael Sadleir to the front pastedown. First edition, first issue, with the word "His" omitted on next to last line of page 140, but without the publisher's catalogue. Stevenson rashly immigrated to America to be reunited with his lover Fanny Van de Grift Osbourne in August of 1879. "For the sake of economy and to collect material for a book he sailed from Glasgow to New York by the emigrant ship "Devonia," describing his experiences in "The Amateur Emigrant," part 1 (abridged, 1895; unabridged, 1966). He made a nightmare journey by emigrant train across America to San Francisco and then down the coast to Monterey, where Fanny was living with her children; it is described in part 2 (published in "Across the Plains," 1892). The hardships of the journey and the poverty that he endured wrecked Stevenson's health, and he was ill for much of the time. He broke down completely in March 1880 and came very near death, having the first of the haemorrhages from the lung that plagued the rest of his life. Fanny, who had obtained a divorce from Osbourne in December, took him into her home and nursed him devotedly. Stevenson and Fanny were married in San Francisco on 19 May 1880. They spent their honeymoon in an abandoned mining camp on the slopes of Mount St Helena, overlooking the Napa valley, experiences later described [as here] in "The Silverado Squatters" (1884)" (Ernest Mehew for DNB). Cowan, p. 615; Howes S980. Emily ("Emmie") Wyper née Draper first met Dodgson with her two sisters, Minnie and Ella, and their parents on a railway journey in 1869, beginning a close friendship that lasted for 25 years. On the free endpaper, Emmie has re-written in beautiful calligraphy an acrostic that had been written for one of her sisters on 6 April 1876 in her copy of The Hunting of the Snark. Since the acrostic features all of them, Emmie apparently wanted the acrostic in a book she owned. The first letters of each line spell out their names.
