        MR. SCARBOROUGH'S FAMILY

1883. In Three Volumes. London: Chatto & Windus, 1883. 32 pp Vol I ads dated March 1883. Original blue-green cloth decorated in brown. First Edition of this novel about a man who valued his estate above his honor, and who accordingly tried to have his cake and eat it too...~John Scarborough, owner of a large landed property in Hertfordshire, resented the restrictions of the law of entail [predetermined succession of estate]. He accordingly devised a scheme whereby he was able by a double marriage, one before and one after the birth of his eldest son, to declare him illegitimate or not, as the future might make desirable... [Gerould]~It is not hard to imagine the subterfuge and treachery this scheme creates between father, elder son and younger son.~MR. SCARBOROUGH'S FAMILY first appeared serially in "All The Year Round," running weekly from May 1882 to June 1883, during which span (December 1882) Trollope died; this three-decker was published posthumously in May 1883. As with most Victorian three-decker novels, it was priced at 31s. 6d.: most people could not afford to buy it, but would rather have to rent it from the lending libraries (which could buy the volumes at a steep discount).~This is an unusually bright, near-fine set (Vol I has a trace of wear at the spine ends, slight cracking of its endpapers, and minor bubbling of the cloth near its front joint -- just like the one other close-to-fine copy we have had). The bindings are clean, and the gilt is bright -- highly remarkable for a novel that was produced for lending libraries to be rented out fortnightly and "read to death." Sadleir (Trollope) 66; Wolff did not have a copy. Housed in a handsome felt-lined clamshell case with leather labels.

LETTERA AUTOGRAFA FIRMATA.

1883. 3 p. (mm. 210x134), datata: St. Agata 18 nov : 1883, di 31 righe. "Egr. Sig. / G Verdi".         Autograph Letter Signed about the Early Progress of the Red Cross

South Framingham, Mass.: Reformatory Prison for Women. May 18, 1883. Two pages, written on the stationary of the Reformatory Prison for Women in South Framingham, listing Barton as Superintendent. Barton served as the president of the American National Red Cross for two decades with the exception of a brief term of service as the Superintendent of the Reformatory. Old folds from mailing, else a fine example. In a letter to a Mrs. Fowler, Barton begins a bit testily: "I have no time for a formal synopsis of the Red Cross and its progress..." However, Barton offers to send two publications about the organization, and mentions progress by the Red Cross, speaking specifically of state affiliates: "These societies have worked in all the great disasters since first, the Michigan fire - all through the Mississippi Floods. The Ohio Floods and the late cyclone are still fields of labor. In the former we are distributing a German Fund sent by Berlin, and the Emperor & Empress of Germany to Pres. Arthur and by him handed to the Red Cross." Further, "In the cyclone in the South the Red Cross has taken the lead in relief and is doing a most noble work." She mentions the concluded International Treaty: "The Treaty is long accomplished. No better Treaty exists under our government and our International [word indecipherable] is permanent and all that it could be." The American Branch of the Red Cross was founded in 1881, with Barton as President. The Michigan Fire in 1881 was the first disaster that the newly minted American Branch of the Red Cross contended with. The Treaty that Barton refers to was almost certainly the Treaty of the Geneva Convention, which was ratified by the United States in 1882. An interesting letter addressing the progress of the Red Cross, in the very early days of its inception. .

Proceedings of the First Convocation of the Colored Clergy of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of America. Held at the Church of the Holy Communion, 6th Avenue and 20th Street, New York City, Sept. 12th, 13th and 14th 1883

Newark, N.J.: Starbuck & Dunham, Book and Job Printers, 165 Market-St, 1883. First edition. 24 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Removed from bound collection; text clean and crisp. First edition. 24 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Black Episcopalians Organize. Following swiftly on the heels of the Sewanee Convention of Southern Bishops in late July of 1883, a large gathering of clergy and layman met in New York to organize the work of the Afro-American clergy of the Protestant Episcopal Church. It was a historic moment, and "of the forty-two Colored Clergy of the United States only four had responded to the call in the negative, and three others had failed to respond." A Committee was formed, chaired by Alexander Crummell, to draft a statement to the Church in America. The Committee calls attention "to the moral disasters which have come to our race through slavery -- how family life, parental authority and marriage integrity, have been broken down by servitude," and issues a call for "an extraordinary effort for the erection of Churches throughout the South" especially in the large urban centers.         Life on the Mississippi

624 pages with frontispiece and over 300 black and white illustrations. Royal Octavo (9" x 6 1/4") Issued in the original brown cloth with gilt lettering and pictorial on spine and black and gilt lettering with pictorial on cover. Lacks the illustration of Twain's head in flames on page 441, and the corrected "St Charles Hotel" on page 443. Simultaneously published in 1883 in the United States and Great Britain, the book is the first submitted to a publisher as a typewritten manuscript (BAL 34II) Second state of the first American edition. Twain once remarked that he considered this book his masterpiece, the book that would outlive his other works and endure as a classic. Of course, Twain once defined a classic as a book everybody talks about but nobody ever reads. At first glance it seems to be a travel book, but it is really a highly readable discursive autobiographical account of Twain's boyhood and his region, and of a culture that radically changed since he left home 30 years earlier. It makes good reading as background for Huck Finn. The only thing that is known of the printing history is what Twain wrote in 1891: that 50,000 copies were printed and bound, but only 32,000 sold. Implication is that the unsold copies were reissued by Charles L Webster between 1884 and 1891 when he took over Osgood's stock. Copies are found with Osgood's sheets and Webster cancel title-page, in Webster bindings, dated 1888 and 1891. As a subscription book, this book was similar in size to the hefty tomes of the American Publishing Company, but the handsome pictorial brown cloth binding ranks with the binding of Huck Finn as one of the best on a Twain first edition. It could be ordered with gilt edges, in full sheep, three-quarter morocco, and three-quarter calf. (MacDonald: Firsts.)This is a memoir by Mark Twain of his days as a steamboat pilot on the Mississippi River before the American Civil War, and also a travel book, recounting his trip along the Mississippi River from St. Louis to New Orleans many years after the War. The book begins with a brief history of the river as reported by Europeans and Americans, beginning with the Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto in 1542. It continues with anecdotes of Twain's training as a steamboat pilot, as the 'cub' (apprentice) of an experienced pilot, Horace E. Bixby. He describes, with great affection, the science of navigating the ever-changing Mississippi River in a section that was first published in 1876, entitled "Old Times on the Mississippi". Although Twain was actually 21 when he began his training, he uses artistic license to make himself seem somewhat younger, referring to himself as a "fledgling" and a "boy" who "ran away from home" to seek his fortune on the river, and playing up his own callowness and naïveté. In the second half, Twain narrates his trip many years later on a steamboat from St. Louis to New Orleans. He describes the competition from railroads, and the new, large cities, and adds his observations on greed, gullibility, tragedy, and bad architecture. He also tells some stories that are most likely tall tales. In 1980 the book was adapted as a TV movie for American public television, with David Knell performing as Sam Clemens, and Robert Lansing as Horace Bixby, the steamboat pilot who mentored him. The film used many tall tales from the book, woven into a fictional narrative. In 2010, Life on the Mississippi was adapted as a stage musical, with book and lyrics by Douglas M. Parker and music by Denver Casado. It was produced that year in Kansas City, Missouri and Door County, Wisconsin. Condition:Recased in original spine, some occasional foxing and finger soiling, one signature slightly sprung else a very good and bright copy.

Condition: Recased in original spine, some occasional foxing and finger soiling, one signature slightly sprung else a very good and bright copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Estrella de Soria.

Stor romantisk opera i tre akter af Otto Prechtler. Musiken af Franz Berwald. Klaverutdrag af komponisten. Grosse romantische Oper [...]. Svensk-tysk parallelltext.

        Che! Wah! Wah!

1883 - (WEST) STREET, George. Che! Wah! Wah! or The Modern Montezumas in Mexico. Illustrated with photographs taken during the trip by R.D. Cleveland. Rochester, N.Y.: E.R. Andrews, 1883. Octavo, original gilt- and black-stamped orange cloth, watered silk endpapers. $3800.Scarce first edition of a photographic record of an 1882 excursion of railway agents from Chicago across the West into Mexico""one of the rare 19th-century works to include a photograph of Texas""a splendid chronicle of the allure and economic might of the railroad, with folding map of the route, color frontispiece, 32 mounted vintage albumen prints and two full-page illustrations, in original bright gilt cloth. This scarce first edition of Che!Wah!Wah! is one of the rare 19th-century works to feature vintage photographs of Texas and Mexico. One of the period's most unique travel books, it chronicles the journey of over 50 railroad agents who traveled, in late 1882, from Chicago to Mexico on several railroad lines, including the Mexican Central railroad, to Chihuahua. The trip came about at a meeting of line managers of the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy, the Denver & Rio Grande, and the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe railroads, when agents representing eastern railroads were invited "on an excursion to Colorado, New Mexico and Mexico". The magnitude of the proposed trip astonished everyone" (8-9). Che! Wah! Wah!, authored by George Street of Rochester's Blue Line, and featuring 32 vintage mounted albumen prints from photographs by R.D. Cleveland, of the Burlington line, is an exceptional photographic record of that trip""one that was also "a busman's holiday". The party derived a good deal of innocent amusement from the Che! Wah! Wah! joke" (Hanna & Reese, From Train to Plane 43). Che! Wah! Wah! reveals the passion of the age, which embraced railroads "as the epitome of modernity." In a time of rapid economic growth, railroad lines also "actively promoted western railroad journeys as modern journeys into the sublime". The 1879 edition of The Pacific Tourist made the transcontinental trip seem both an inspirational immersion in nature and a journey utterly devoid of physical effort." Che! Wah! Wah! documents, as well, the railroad's looming and powerful impact. The 32 vintage mounted albumen prints in Che!Wah!Wah! offer a rare glimpse into that "innovation," as well as the lives of people in towns across the West and Mexico. Included are images of a train's dining car; depots in Nebraska and Colorado; Denver's majestic Windsor hotel and Colorado's Marshall Pass; a bridge "In the Grand Canon of the Arkansas"; the Colorado towns of Leadville and Trinidad, of Raton, New Mexico and El Paso, Texas; Indian children in Isleta, New Mexico, and views of Chihuahua's magnificent cathedral, its busy plazas and markets. Also included are images of the luxurious hotel, known as "The Montezuma," near the Hot Springs of Las Vegas, New Mexico. With folding map of the train route, color frontispiece of a woodblock print, two full-page illustrations, 32 mounted vintage albumen prints (each approximately 3-1/2 by 5 inches) and numerous in-text illustrations; "Mileage Minutes of the Trip" at rear. Interior fresh with lightest scattered foxing, mild fading to vintage mounted prints, front inner paper hinge expertly reinforced, light edge-wear to bright gilt-stamped cloth.         The Kama Sutra of Vatsyayana.

Benares: printed for the Hindoo Kama Shastra Society,, 1883. Translated from the Sanscrit. In Seven Parts, with Preface, Introduction, and Concluding Remarks. 7 parts bound as one, octavo. Finely bound in contemporary red half morocco, with all the original paper front wrappers bound in, spine gilt in compartments and titles direct, red cloth sides with gilt rule, top edge gilt. The binding lightly scuffed in places but sound and handsome, some trivial spotting internally, but overall excellent condition. First edition, first issues in the privately distributed parts complete with the wrappers bound in and the general title-page at the front. One of 250 copies issued; as early as 1923, Penzer noted that "this edition in parts was soon exhausted, and is now practically unobtainable". The Kama Sutra was first work published by the Kama Shastra Society, which Burton founded with his friend Arbuthnot for publishing Eastern, and chiefly erotic, works. Richard Burton masterminded, edited and published this first complete translation of the Kama Sutra of the Vedic philosopher Vatsyayana (c. third-century A.D.), deemed "the standard work on love in Sanskrit literature" (Preface), but he was not the chief translator; the work was done by a cadre of Indian scholars and British orientalists working together to collate and translate the original manuscripts. As well as being much praised for the accuracy of the translation in communicating the mores of c. third-century India, Burton's Kama Sutra project also has important resonance for its own time; in his preface, Burton makes an urgent plea for this book's importance against the presumed prudishness of contemporary Western audiences, staking a claim for this book's place in the history of sexual liberation: "If all science is founded more of less on a stratum of facts, there can be no harm in making known to mankind generally certain matters intimately connected with the private, domestic, and social life. Alas! complete ignorance of them has unfortunately wrecked many a man and many a woman, while a little knowledge of a subject generally ignored by the masses would have enable numbers of people to have understood many things which they believed to be quite incomprehensible, or which were not thought worthy of their consideration".

[Attentat d'Orsini].

The Hongkong Directory and Hong List for The Far East, for 1884.

Hong Kong.: Robert Fraser-Smith.. 1883.. 566pp + [20] page section of advertisments, light even browning throughout, a little heavier on endpapers, occasional spotting. Bound in original red cloth boards gilt, a little flecked and marked, some fairly minor damp staining upper section lower cover upper section, spine discoloured. Inscription shows a charming family association: "To Carrie Lees, from her affectionate brother Stuart M. Fraser-Smith". An attractive copy. This book is rarely offered for sale and is surprisingly most uncommon in library holdings. This very scarce directory is full of detailed information relating to trade, business and the lives of those involved in Hong Kong, China, Singapore, Vietnam, the Philippines, Taiwan, Borneo and Japan at the end of the 19th century. There are extensive lists of occupations each with name of the current occupant which is further complimented by the advertisments at the rear many of which also list names of directors and others in roles of responsibility. The first section of the book, begins with treaties, rules, guides and rates. This is followed by sections on the countries or regions covered. Usually this consists of a page or two of text describing the place in broad terms and then a directory listing the positions held and the name of the incumbent current at that time. Finally at the rear of the volume are other useful lists for those living in Hong Kong such as the "Ladies Directory for Hong Kong"; "Private Residences of the Principal Government Officials, the leading Merchants, the Consuls, the Professional Men and Justices of the Peace"; "Alphabetical List of Foreign Residents" etc. The publisher of this volume, Robert Fraser-Smith, was the controversial founder of the Hongkong Telegraph of whom it has been written that he was "atrabilious and scandalous". Robert Fraser-Smith was involved in a great many libel suits and spent some time in gaol. A very nice association copy of a scarce volume. .
