An English Version of the Eclogues of Virgil. With Illustrations by the Author. Edited by A.H. Palmer

Folio. London: Seeley & Co, 1883. Folio, (2) xvi, 102pp. Title-page printed in red and black With 14 plates including 5 original etchings and 9 reproductions from drawings by Palmer. Original white vellum over boards, lettered in gilt, a very fine copy extremely rare thus. First edition, large-paper copy limited to 135 copies (#34). The book was unfinished when Palmer died, so it was completed by his son A.H. Palmer. Of the 5 original etchings in the book, only one was completely etched and finished by Samuel Palmer, ?Opening the Fold? or ?Early Morning?: Lister 13.vii. Sophie Schneideman noted of her copy: ?He writes in the introduction that Samuel Palmer was a great admirer of Virgil and that in about 1856 he had begun writing a paraphrase of the Eclogues in English verse so that "those who do not read them in the original should have some version from which the pastoral essence had not quite evaporated". It took him years and he imagined that each Bucolic would have an exquisite etching or woodcut at the head of it. In 1872 he wrote "If Blake were alive and I could afford it, I would ask him to make a headpiece of each". He later began some designs for them himself in ink on cardboard. He wrote to Mr. Hamerton about them "I hope to make them distinctly the best things I have ever done". After some thought Palmer decided that he should go back to his favorite medium of etching for the illustrations. As he son notes, although he had given only 10 etching to the world in almost 25 years, this was not light undertaking by "a labor of love". It wasn't until 1881 that he really got going only to be struck down. He died in May telling his son of his wish that the Virgil should be finished. He used the original drawings and his father's notes on proofs. One plate had been finished by Palmer and others were well advanced and then finished by his son from Palmer's notes but some of the designs had not been etched. So those that had been etched are printed here from the plate and for the other illustrations the drawings have been reproduced using photo-engraving.?         Untersuchungen über die Methode der Socialwissenschaften, und der Politischen Oekonomie insbesondere

Leipzig: Duncker & Humblot,, 1883. Octavo (208 × 131 mm). Recent half cloth and marbled boards, spine lettered gilt. Repeated institutional library stamps (Freiburg University) to half-title, title page and 17 further leaves, with cancel overstamp. Half-title strengthened with tape along gutter, short tear to page vii repaired, tear to page 69 mended with clear tape. Shelf marks to title covered with correction fluid. Occasional pencil underlining and marginalia; a rather worn ex-library copy of a book that has become difficult to find in any condition. First edition, scarce. Carl Menger (1840-1921), economic theorist and founder of the Austrian school of marginal analysis, was both the most influential and the least read of the major figures who gave economic theory the shape it preserved from about 1885 to 1935. In the Untersuchungen, his second major work, he "undertook to vindicate the importance of theory in the social sciences. This was an effort that seemed necessary to him in view of the complete indifference or even hostility which most of his German colleagues, influenced by the antitheoretical attitude of the 'younger historical school' in economics, had shown towards his attempt in the earlier Grundsätze der Volkswirthschaftslehre (1871) to reconstruct economic theory" (von Hayek in IESS).

Report on the Kimberley District, North-Western Australia by the Honourable John Forrest

Perth: Richard Pether, Government Printer, 1883. Folio, 20 pp., two plates and a large folding lithographed map measuring 570 x 863 mm., fine in recent quarter calf with gilt lettering. Baron Forrest of Bunbury on the Kimberley. Enthusiastic report on the vast potential of the Kimberley region by veteran explorer John Forrest, illustrated with a fine map of the country inland from Roebuck Bay and King Sound and two interesting plates.Born near Bunbury in 1847, Forrest had a long career as an inland explorer, sometimes working with his brother Alexander Forrest. Throughout his life Forrest worked tirelessly for the progress of Western Australia, and was the first native-born Australian to be raised to the peerage with the title Baron Forrest of Bunbury. This report summarises an expedition of 1883 to assess the long-term economic value of the Kimberley for pastoral use. Forrest traversed the Kimberley from Roebuck Bay to the Fitzroy River, then surveyed potential country along the May, Meda and Lennard Rivers. The final league of the journey took the expedition from Roebuck Bay to La Grange Bay. Forrest's journal itself is accompanied by two plates etched by H. C. Prinsep from photographs by the author, the "Camp of the Meda River Company on the May River" and "Mid-day camp in sandy bed of the Robinson River". Overall, his assessment is glowing: 'The whole Kimberley District, in so far as it has been tried (excepting the country near Beagle Bay) seems admirably adapted for cattle and horses.'.

Letter and address panel are affixed to cover stock measuring 8.5"" X 11.5"".Soiling to address panel, small loss to page 2 in blank lower corner, otherwise letter and panel are in fine condition. In full, ""Your very beautiful & kind token of good will & remembrance has reached us; & we have great pleasure in feeling & expressing gratitude, & hearty wishes for your welfare. It often is both a comfort & a stay, to remember that kind friends, fairly won, think of us sometimes with goodness. / For my part, I never get half the good will &; kindly consideration from the English public wh[ich] I am proud to have won from the far more sensitive & quick race, across the ocean. And herein I share the experience of many of the English writers. / But as to yourself, I hope (& so does my good wife, who often talks of you) that you are spending as happy a time, as a happy nature sh[oul]d ensure you. And with renewal of thanks, I am, Dear Miss Derby, / Very sincerely yours / (signed) R.D. Blackmore."" Blackmore was thought to be a recluse, as he preoccupied himself with the demands of writing and fruit growing at Teddington. He did, however, have a number of very intimate friends with whom he met regularly. His works had a wide following in the United States and during his life he formed many friendships with Americans. An Autograph Letter Signed, ""A.K.H. Boyd"" was affixed to the verso of the card stock. It is now detached without damage. Dr. Boyd was a Scottish minister who wrote ""The Country Parson"" essays. The signature of Mehemmed [Ali] Pasha, in English and Arabic, is affixed to the verso."

Alles te sien in 't Oude Doolhof tot Amsterdam, op de hoeck van de Loyers-gracht.Amsterdam, Tymen Houthaeck, 1648. Small 4to. With engraved title-page with vignette showing a labyrinth, 1 folding engraved plate, 1 full-page engraved plate by P. Holsteyn after A. Vinckenbrinck and 3 engravings in text. Modern marbled wrappers.

Franken 1375 (note); Meijer, "Het oude doolhof te Amsterdam", in: Oud Holland vol. 1 (1883), pp. 119-135; Spies, De Amsterdamse doolhoven, pp. 70-71. Extremely rare booklet (only one other copy could be traced), the first edition with a description by Jan Vos of a garden, or amusement park, called 'Oude Doolhof' (Old Labyrinth or maze), published as a souvenir or 'flyer'. This first Doolhof, called the 'Oude Doolhof', was founded at the Looiersgracht at Amsterdam by the wine merchant and inn-keeper Vincent Jacobsz. Coster before 1625. In fact it was a kind of combination of a seventeenth-century 'Madame Tussauds' and an amusement park. The garden was composed of a labyrinth in which fountains and automata were displayed, showing historical & biblical figures and spectacles. The illustrations, according to Franken implicitly after C. van de Passe (who lived also at the Looiersgracht at the time), show the sights and spectacles of this labyrinth. The lower corner of the title-page and the first plate gone. Very good copy of this rare souvenir.

The Bakhtyar Nama: a Persian Romance. Translated from a Manuscript Text by Sir William Ouseley. Edited by W. A. Clouston

[n.p.]: privately printed [by William Burns of Larkhall, Lanarkshire], 1883. One of 300 copies. li, [i], 232 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Contemporary olive morocco by J. Leighton, Brewer St., covers with gilt-ruled border with small arabesque cornerpieces, spine in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in the second and third compartments, the others with repeat decoration in gilt centered on a stylized floral sprig tool, gilt turn-ins, all edges gilt (light scuffing to extremities). Provenance: Janey Morris (presentation inscription from Clouston 'To Mrs. Morris / from the Editor' on ffep. INSCRIBED TO JANE MORRIS A fine copy with an important provenance, probably bound for presentation. Ouseley's translation was first published in 1800 but by the 1880s was rare: Clouston, an Orkney-born folk-lorist, took the view that it was worth reprinting. He contributed to Burton's Supplemental Arabian Nights. William Morris's interest in the sagas and Clouston's work on folk-lore would probably be where their circles of interest intersected?

Recollections of the Kabul Campaign, 1879 & 1880

London: W. H. Allen & Co.,, 1883. Octavo. Original red cloth neatly repaired, gilt lettered spine, drab brown endpapers. Mounted photographic portrait frontispiece of General Roberts, 7 lithographic plates (3 folding), folding map. Discreet book label of Maurice F. I'Anson on front free endpaper. Spine sunned, touch of foxing to frontispiece and title. First edition of this uncommon account of the advance of the Kurum Field Force to Kabul, the occupation of the city, and of Roberts's march on Kandahar. The author served in the Bengal medical service during the Second Afghan War. Presentation copy from the author, inscribed on the title page: "Sir Charles Macgregor, with the Author's very kind regards, London June 1883". An attractive association copy: Macgregor (1840-1887) army officer, explorer, and military strategist, played a prominent part in the campaign; "when the second phase of the war began, Macgregor was appointed chief of staff to Sir Frederick Roberts, accompanying the advance from Ali Khel in the Kurram valley across the Shutar Gardan Pass. He took an active part in the battle of Charasia, capture of Kabul, and occupation of the Sherpur cantonment. On 11 December 1879 Macgregor recaptured from the enemy the four abandoned British guns at Kala-i-Aoshar outside Kabul. He took a leading part in the defence of Sherpur and the subsequent fighting in Maidan and Wardak. When Sir Donald Stewart arrived from Kandahar, Macgregor became his chief of staff until the defeat at Maiwand. Macgregor then commanded the 3rd infantry brigade of Sir Frederick Roberts's Kabul?-Kandahar field force during the march to Kandahar, and was present at the final victory over Ayub Khan's army on the banks of the Arghandab" (ODNB).
