        Port Phillip Settlement

London: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle, & Rivington, 1883. Thick octavo, with a frontispiece, a folding map, 5 folding facsimiles of manuscripts (one with old tape repair), 1 double-page plate of facsimile signatures, and 29 plates; good, in old blue half morocco, red spine label. First edition of Bonwick's most substantial historical work and his final statement on the history of the settlement of Port Phillip. It was "not intended as a history of Port Phillip, much less of Victoria; being only the narrative of attempted Settlements, and, ultimately, of the permanent occupation of the territory." The 500-page work includes reproductions of the sketches of the explorer and surveyor, John Hedder Wedge, and long extracts from his exploration diaries, as well as extracts from the reports of surveyor Gellibrand and an early narrative by Angus MacMillan describing his discovery of Gippsland. In most cases this constitutes the first appearance in print of these important manuscript sources.

Autograph Letter, signed, to Mrs. Ord, the widow of General E.O.C. Ord

Havana 1883 - 6 pp., in ink, on letterhead of the Consulate-General of the United States. The Death of General Ord. Adam Badeau (1831-1895), author of several books* and a former Civil War officer who served under General Grant in the Wilderness and Appomatox campaigns, was serving as the Consul-General in Havana when the distinguished Union General, E.O.C. Ord (Oct. 18, 1818 - July 22, 1883), died there of the yellow fever he had contracted while working on the Mexican Southern Railroad - owned, ironically, by Ulysses S. Grant and Jay Gould, In this moving letter of condolence to Ord's widow. Badeau conveys the details of Ord's final hours in Havana, and ends with this fine tribute to General Ord: "I need not say, dear Mrs. Ord, how my heart bleeds for you, struck down as you are by this sudden and irreparable loss. I can only offer you my sympathy, for consolation would be a mockery. But it must be a mournful satisfaction to you to know that here in a strange land his name and services to his own country were recognized, not only by us who had known him personally, and me who had served by his side, and known his military and individual virtues, his patriotism, his distinction, his amiability, his probity, his honor; but by strangers and citizens here. Everyone, official and unofficial expressed the greatest regard and regret for this gallant soldier dying on his way home, and the greatest commiseration for his widowed orphans deprived just when they were expecting his return, of their protector and guardian and dearest friend."*THE VAGABOND, a collection of essays (New York, 1859) MILITARY HISTORY OF ULYSSES S. GRANT (3 vols., 1867-'81) ; and CONSPIRACY: A CUBAN ROMANCE (1885) ; ARISTOCRACY IN ENGLAND (1886); and GRANT IN PEACE (1886). Slight toning, overall, near fine.         THE UNTOWARD EFFECTS OF DRUGS: A PHARMACOLOGICAL AND CLINICAL MANUAL

1883 - LEWIN, Dr. Louis. THE UNTOWARD EFFECTS OF DRUGS, A PHARMACOLOGICAL AND CLINICAL MANUAL. Translated from the German by J.J. Mulheron. Detroit, Michigan: George S. Davis, 1883. Tall octavo, original embossed brown cloth, ornately stamped in gilt; 216 pages plus six-page index. Second Edition, Revised & Enlarged. Dr. Louis Lewin [1850-1929] was a German author of more than 200 major publications on the subject of pharmacology, including 12 books. He was the first researcher to study peyote with the Native Americans and the first to publish a monograph on kava. He directed a private laboratory in Berlin and he was considered the leading toxicologist in Germany. He published the first methodical analysis of the Peyote cactus, a variant of which was named Anhalonium lewinii in his honor. In Berlin, a street and a nearby underground station are also named in his honor. One of Lewin's most enduring tasks was to create a system of classification of psychoactive drugs and plants on their pharmacologic action. His original categories were Inebriantia (inebriants: alcohol or ether); Exitantia (stimulants like Kaht or ampehtamines); Euphorica (euphoriants and narcotics, like heroin); Hypnotica (tranquilizers, such as Kava); Phantastica (hallucinogens or entheogens, like peyote or Ayahuasca). A very rare book and in terric condition. Very Good or better condition (quite nice; minor wear covers with contents clean & tight; gilt-stamping is very bright & unrubbed). $750.00.         Rutherford Hayes makes a cryptic allusion to President Chester A. Arthur: "I have no quarrel with my old adversary that is in the least personal. If he has with me I do not know it."

Fremont, Ohio, September 26, 1883. 5.5" x 8.5". "Autograph Letter Signed, ""R.B. Hayes,"" 1 page, 5.5"" x 8.5"", Fremont, Ohio, September 26, 1883 to noted autograph collector Lewis Jacob Cist (1818-1885). Light folds, very light soling, else fine. ""Your letter of the 15th instant came during my absence. I am now so thronged[?] with matters requiring instant attention that I cannot at once lay my hand on what you wish, or even recall defiantly the fact that I have or have not that document you seek. But I will try to give it to you, to procure it somewhere. The hour[?] strikes me as it does you ?" unless I put in a disclaimer as to the personal sting. I have no quarrel with my old adversary that is in the least personal. If he has with me I do not know it."" Hayes, an early but ultimately unsuccessful champion of civil service reform, had one major victory in his efforts to weed out corruption in the federal workforce: his dismissal of Chester A. Arthur as Collector of the Port of New York. His initial efforts to dismiss the corrupt Arthur and his cohorts met with stiff resistance by conservative Republicans in Congress. Hayes was forced to await a Congressional recess to take executive action to get Arthur out of the lucrative post. "
