        Historia de Mexico

Victoriano Agueros y Comp, Mexico City 1883 - 5 volumes. 495 pages with frontispiece, six plates, plan and appendices; 536 pages with appendices and index; 567 pages with appendices and index; 675 pages with appendices and index; 840 pages with appendices, tables and index. Royal octavo (9 3/4" x 7") bound in quarter calf with marbled boards and gilt lettering to spine. (Palau 4576) Second edition. Lucas Ignacio Alamán y Escalada Alamán studied at the Real Colegio de Minas de la Nueva España, in the Viceroyalty of New Spain (colonial México). He frequently traveled on his credentials as a scientist and diplomat, becoming one of the most educated men in Mexico. At the outset of the war for Mexican independence, in September 1810, Alamán is said to have been an eyewitness of the massacre of Spanish families in his home city of Guanajuato. This experience may have influenced his lifelong devotion to conservative politics and his nostalgia for monarchic rule for Mexico. For most of the 1840s, he devoted himself primarily to writing the history of Mexico from the perspective of a conservative. His three-volume work Disertaciones sobre la Historia de la Republica mexicana (Mexico, 1844¿1849) and his five-volume Historia de México, desde los primeros movimientos que prepararon su independencia en el año de 1808, hasta la época presente (Mexico, 1849¿1852), stand as the major intellectual productions of the Conservative Party in nineteenth-century Mexico, and the only histories produced by a Mexican author of his era to view the Spanish presence in his country favorably. Condition: Early owner's embossed stamps to title pages, moderate wear, some age toning, corners bumped and rubbed, book plates removed from front pastedowns, some chipping to edges else a good to very good set.       Printed by I. C. Bose & Co. and Published by the Author, Calcutta 1883 - A Work, in a Decorative Calcutta Binding, thatSupports "God Save the Queen" as India's National Anthem. 216 x 159 mm (8 1/2 x 6 1/4"). 4 p.l. (the first a blank), 24, 29-32, 25-28 (bound out of order), 33-100 pp. FIRST EDITION. PUBLISHER'S ORIGINAL CALCUTTA BINDING OF DARK GREEN PEBBLED MOROCCO, RICHLY GILT, front cover with a densely gilt frame enclosing a gilt-rolled panel with central vignette of Shiva, (the rear cover with an arabesque at center, but otherwise identical), gilt-rolled raised bands, spine compartments heavily gilt with stippling and vegetal forms, gilt-hatched turn-ins, all edges gilt. Text bordered in red. Slight loss of gilt to vignette, a hint of dulling to spine, but still a fine copy, the gilt very bright everywhere else, and the text remarkably clean and fresh. Something infrequently seen in the West, this is an engaging Calcutta binding, here covering a fine copy of Tagore's essay that supports the adoption of the British national anthem, "God Save the Queen," as the national anthem of India. A member of the cultural elite, our author came from one of the wealthiest and most influential families in Calcutta (poet Rabindranath Tagore was from another branch of the family). His publications were aimed at British and European orientalists both in India and in Europe as well as Calcutta's Bengali intelligentsia. His argument here is that loyalty to royalty has always been a constant in Hindu culture, and so "God Save the Queen" is an appropriate candidate for national anthem of India, the jewel in Queen Victoria's crown. Indian nationalism and the desire for independence did not spread until the post-World War I era, when its Hindu leaders would have thought this book heretical. They nevertheless would have admired this volume as an object: Brahma (God the Creator) is referred to as Hiranyagarbha ("the one born of gold"), and Brahma is obviously in the details of this glittery binding. It will always be pleasant to hold a beautiful object finished with the essence of the Creator, even if the song it sings is a sacrilege to certain modern (in this case, Indian) ears. Walker graduated MD from Leiden University in 1799, and later published his thesis on the function of the heart and blood vessels. He became a licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians, London, in 1812, and was for a long time member of the Physical Society of Guy's Hospital." [ODNB]. The mss volume contanins several mentions of a Dr. Gregory, hence one presumes Walker was, perhaps, a student of Dr Gregory. Dr. John Gregory (1724 - 1773, also John Gregorie), was an 18th C. Fernando Garrido Tortosa, Cartagena, 1821-1883. CCPB000197141. Palau. 100248. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Autograph Letter, signed, to Mrs. Ord, the widow of General E.O.C. Ord

Havana, 1883. 6 pp., in ink, on letterhead of the Consulate-General of the United States. Slight toning, overall, near fine. In brown cloth chemise. 6 pp., in ink, on letterhead of the Consulate-General of the United States. The Death of General Ord. Adam Badeau (1831-1895), author of several books* and a former Civil War officer who served under General Grant in the Wilderness and Appomatox campaigns, was serving as the Consul-General in Havana when the distinguished Union General, E.O.C. Ord (Oct. 18, 1818 - July 22, 1883), died there of the yellow fever he had contracted while working on the Mexican Southern Railroad - owned, ironically, by Ulysses S. Grant and Jay Gould, In this moving letter of condolence to Ord's widow. Badeau conveys the details of Ord's final hours in Havana, and ends with this fine tribute to General Ord: "I need not say, dear Mrs. Ord, how my heart bleeds for you, struck down as you are by this sudden and irreparable loss. I can only offer you my sympathy, for consolation would be a mockery. But it must be a mournful satisfaction to you to know that here in a strange land his name and services to his own country were recognized, not only by us who had known him personally, and me who had served by his side, and known his military and individual virtues, his patriotism, his distinction, his amiability, his probity, his honor; but by strangers and citizens here. Everyone, official and unofficial expressed the greatest regard and regret for this gallant soldier dying on his way home, and the greatest commiseration for his widowed orphans deprived just when they were expecting his return, of their protector and guardian and dearest friend." *THE VAGABOND, a collection of essays (New York, 1859) MILITARY HISTORY OF ULYSSES S. GRANT (3 vols., 1867-'81) ; and CONSPIRACY: A CUBAN ROMANCE (1885) ; ARISTOCRACY IN ENGLAND (1886); and GRANT IN PEACE (1886).
