        Autograph Quotation Signed

1882 - ("Oscar Wilde") in black fountain pen ink. 7 3/8" x 8 1/4", 1 page, on paper watermarked "Royal Irish Linen, Marcus Ward Co." tipped to a gilt edged album leaf. [April 21, 1882]. Very good. Four lines from his poem, "The Garden of Eros." "creamy - meadow sweet whiter than Juno's throat' and odorous as all Arabia - Garden of Eros" Oscar Wilde April 21. Wilde arrived in America on January 2, 1882 ("too too" some reporters said in their account of the event) at the invitation of Richard D'Olyly Carte, to lecture as a spokesman for the Aesthetic Movement. He was 28 years old, but he told the American public he was 26. Ten months of intense media followed his every move. Audiences from coast to coast turned out to hear his sold out lectures. Although there is no year or place noted, this is believed signed on his 1882 American/Canadian tour. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Kgl. Wasserbauinspektion Frankfurt a.M.

Sonst ordentlich erhalten [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        å¤¢æƒ å µè¡›èƒ¡è ç‰ èªž [Muso byoe kocho monogatari - A Dreamer's Butterfly Tale].

      - Tokyo, Haishi Shuppansha 1882 [Meiji 15]. Two volumes 225x155mm, publisher's embossed yellow wrappers; a half-page, ten double page and five full page woodcut illustrations by Yoshitoshi. A tiny bit of nibbling to a couple of pages edges, a good fresh copy. Bakin's imaginary voyage fantasia was first published in 1809-10 and this is, I deduce, the second edition, revised or corrected from Bakin's own copy of the first edition; the first with Yoshitoshi's illustrations. Further editions followed thick and fast but apart from a partial translation in The Chrysanthemum (Yokohama 1882) I can't find an English version exists - particularly frustrating as Yoshitoshi's illustrations are magnetic. The surreal and grotesque are always hard to resist - and Yoshitoshi was a master among masters - and I don't think I've ever seen a better illustration, a better description, of the world of an opium smoker. The best account of the book I've found is in a 1909 letter from Minakata Kumagusu to the publisher Gowans & Gray who had approached him for a translation of a Bakin work of his choice. He chose this, "the only book that ever took me out of bed 30 minutes sooner than I wished to get up", and described it as something like Gulliver's Travels in which a man, decided there is nothing more to learn in his own land, determines to travel the world. He is told the means - a kite - in a vision and sets off to explore the lands of Infancy, Lust (high, medium and low grades), Drunkenness, Greed Trouble, Sorrows, Falsehood and Happiness. Unfortunately Gowan & Gray wouldn't spring for Kumagusu's fee and that was the end of that. At least we have Yoshitoshi.

        Du délire des négations

1882 - 35 pages Paris, V.-A. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Outstanding and historically important ledger book

Territory of Montana 1882 - 478 pages, folio (12.5 x 7.75 inches), original marbled boards (worn) re-backed with maroon linen, designated: "Minute Book No. 10," the proceedings of the 1st District Court, Territory of Montana, November 13, 1882 - April 11, 1886, the official record of hundreds of criminal and civil cases almost entirely in the hand of Theophilus Muffly - (1833 - 1898), a pioneer of the Territory who emigrated to Virginia City in December of 1864 and who was appointed to the bar by the United States Supreme Court. He was one of the lawyers present at the opening of the District Court of the Judicial District and subsequently served as Clerk of the Court, Attorney, Probate Judge, Justice of the Peace, and Police Magistrate. This remarkable offering provides great insight into the inner workings of the Territory's Judicial system, which on the surface amounted to little more than a glorified "good ol' boys club," with little concern given to the issue of "conflict of interest." There are instances whereby District Attorneys prosecuted cases one day and then represented defendants in the same court room the next. Thus, it created an environment whereby prosecutors opposed each other in some cases and then jointly prosecuted defendants in similar cases. In one instance, James E. Callaway (a signer of the 1884 Montana State Constitution) was appointed by the court to represent a defendant who could not procure counsel. Ordinarily this would not raise eyebrows except for the fact that Callaway was one of the most prominent District Attorneys in the court. Henry N. Blake, First Chief Justice of the Montana Supreme Court and arguably one of the most gifted jurists in the Territory had no qualms about handling an exorbitant amount of divorce cases, collecting his usual fee of $50.00. This was done while he was an Associate Justice serving on the Montana Territorial Supreme Court! One thing that is evident is that this ledger is a virtual who's-who of many of the most prominent figures in Montana history, including entries for lawmen who would eventually be murdered, lawyers who would become important legislators (including a Governor), and pioneers who would become founders of the State Constitution. Many of these people lived colorful and distinguished lives while others would be forever clouded by controversy. Of special interest to historians will be the very last cases of Justice Everton Judson Congers (1834 - 1918) -- a Civil War hero who sustained several wounds in combat but who will forever be remembered for his role in the capture of John Wilkes Booth. He was appointed to the Court in 1880 by his friend Rutherford B. Hayes despite being a confirmed alcoholic, morphine addict, and habitual gambler. He made many political enemies and in 1883 was suspended from the bench due to "incompetence, neglect of duty, and keeping companionship of low, vile people," a decision upheld by President Chester A. Arthur. Public outcry and an internal investigation later attributed his drinking and drug addiction to injuries sustained during the war. Congers was re-appointed to the bench but it was just one day before his term was set to expire and he was out of a job. Interestingly, in his later years, he relocated to Hawaii where he served as the attorney for Queen Liliuokalani. Congers presides over several interesting cases including an indictment for "marking and branding a calf with intent to steal same," of which he set bail at a staggering $500.00. On the other hand, a person convicted of "manslaughter with malice" received a generous sentence of six years incarceration. Charles W. Turner (1846 - 1907), a prominent attorney who appeared many times before Congers, might have summed it up best when he said, "He called them the way he saw them with little left to the imagination or reason." Turner became a law partner of Andrew F. Burleigh (1846 - 1907), who is also heavily represented in this book, and was subsequently murdered by a gunman in 1907.         LORD PALMERSTON

1882 - London: Wm. Isbister, 1882. Original terra-cotta cloth on flexible boards. First Edition, first state -- dated 1882, in smooth cloth and black endpapers (later copies, dated 1883, were in a grained cloth, with white endpapers). This was the second volume in Isbister's ill-fated "English Political Leaders" series, modeled after Macmillan's series "English Men of Letters"; SIR ROBERT PEEL had been the first volume, and WILLIAM PITT would follow, but that would be it for the venture. For this series Isbister adopted the brief early-1880s experiment of binding with staples rather than string -- a dismal failure (and making whole copies very scarce today).~This is a very good copy, with very little wear but with a bit of cover soil; the title page bears a 1955 signature. One of the least-seen Trollope titles. Sadleir (Trollope) 63. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Temples and Towers of the Virgen [Grand Cañon District Atlas Sheet IV]

[New York]: Julius Bien & Co, 1882. Tinted lithograph by Julius Bien & Co. (Small tears to original fold and a repaired tear in the left margin). A fine image from "one of the grandest publications of the scientific explorations in the American West", by arguably one of the greatest American topographical artists who recorded this important era of westward expansion This magnificent image is from the atlas volume of the official government report of the first great geological survey of the Grand Canyon. The team assembled to carry out the survey included some outstanding talents: Clarence E.Dutton, the scientist; Jack Hilliers, the photographer, and William Henry Holmes and Thomas Moran as artist-topographers. Holmes had already taken part in the Hayden survey of 1872-1877, and after serving with the Geological survey from 1880-1884, he turned to Ethnology and Anthropology, becoming chief of the Bureau of American Ethnology in 1902. From 1930 to 1932 he was director of the National Gallery of Art. The intention of the survey of the Grand Canyon was strictly scientific, but as Dutton writes in his preface, "I have in many places departed from the severe ascetic style which has become conventional in scientific monographs." This is also true of Moran and Holmes: both were clearly inspired by their subjects. As Wallace Stegner wrote in his introduction to the 1977 reprint of the whole work "Later specialization has eliminated from scientific publications most of the elements that make The Tertiary History so charming. No report written as this one is written would now be published by any government bureau. No illustrators like Moran and Holmes would be permitted to illustrate it... A great book... The Tertiary History has kept its value precisely because it does not specialize". Cf. Francis P.Farquhar. The Books of the Colorado River & the Grand Canyon (Los Angeles: 1953) 73; cf. W.B.Reese & G.A.Miles Depicting America (New Haven: 1992) 40.

        Signed Autograph Letter

England, [1882]. Very Good. An interesting two page letter written on April 28th 1882 by Trollope to Dr. Macleod. Trollope died the same year on December 6. Donald Macleod was the editor of "Good Words", which published Trollope's short work The Two Heroines of Plumpington in 1882, so the letter may refer to that story. Trollope writes on stationery engraved Harting, Petersfield: "April 28, 1882, My dear D. Macleod, I find that 25 of your pages will considerably exceed 100 ordinary novel pages. I could not do this amount of work for [pound sign] 75 guineas. I will do it, if you like, for 100 guineas, making the payment nearly equal to the [pound sign] 1 a novel page. In that case the copyright should be left to me. I can let you have it by the end of July. But I shall not be sorry to see the task go elsewhere, as it is always hard for me to cudgel my brain for a Xmas story. Where is your brother George and when does he leave town Yours always Anthony Trollope." Written on both sides of 4 1/2 x 7 inch paper. Two small spots on left margin of front page. Very good condition. AUTO/022916.

Die Funde von Olympia. Ausgabe in einem Bande. Hrsg. von dem Direktorium der Ausgrabungen zu Olympia. 40 Tafeln.

Berlin, Wasmuth, 1882. Groß-Folio (54 x 39 cm). Textheft: 38 Seiten. Dazu 40 Tafeln, meist in photographischem Verfahren (Lichtdruck in Gelatinetechnik), 7 in Lithographie. Versand D: 5,00 EUR

The Bibliography of Izaak Walton's Compleat Angler

London: Peyton &Co., 1882. - 8vo., (8 ½ x 6 ¾ inches). Original brown paper boards as issued (spine worn away but binding holding, boards a bit rubbed). Provenance: Number 23 of a limited number of copies printed for presentation only. With manuscript presentation inscription: "Wm. Senior Esquire with Tho. Satchell's best respects. Hampstead: April 15th, 1882" to verso of title page. Noted in pencil on free endpaper "N/B Bot [sic] at Senior's sale." First edition. NUMBERED LIMITED EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY. A bibliography of Izaak Walton (1593-1683)'s "Compleat Angler," produced in a very small edition. The Compleat Angler was first published in 1653, but Walton continued to edit and add to it for 25 years. It celebrates the art and spirit of fishing in prose and verse, with editions published in 1655, 1661, 1668, and 1676. Satchell here records 87 "dated, redated and undated editions and reprints, with dissimilar imprints" (p. 23). The author has added a manuscript note here, "of which fifteen, issued before the year 1864, (the date of the 'Chronicle') have escaped previous notice." This copy was presented by the author to William Senior (1837-1920), also known by his pen name "Red Spinner. He was an Anglo-Australian journalist, angler, co-founder of Brisbane's famed Johnsonian Club, and editor and writer of short stories. In 1876 Senior became the first officially appointed Principal Short Hand writer for the Parliament of Queensland and served as special correspondent and reporter for several publications, including the London Daily News, the Manchester Examiner, and the Brisbane Courier. Senior also wrote a number of short stories for the Queenslander during his time in office. He returned to England in April 1881, becoming editor-in-chief of the sports journal "The Field," where he had previous served as the angling editor. He wrote and edited this journal for over twenty-five years, still frequently using his old nom de plume "Red Spinner."         Outstanding and historically important ledger book

Territory of Montana, 1882. hardcover. very good(-). 478 pages, folio (12.5 x 7.75 inches), original marbled boards (worn) re-backed with maroon linen, designated: "Minute Book No. Burleigh performs his duties as District Attorney but also represents gold mine owners and railroad interests throughout the book. There is no doubt that the experience he acquired from these cases laid the groundwork for his becoming Receiver of the Northern Pacific Railroad. Another prominent District Attorney whose earliest known cases are documented is Robert B. Smith (1854 - 1908). He was appointed to the job by President Cleveland in 1885, launching his political career which culminated in his being elected Governor in 1896. Smith procures indictments and then prosecutes defendants charged with a host of frontier crimes including "grand larceny," "drawing and exhibiting a deadly weapon in an intimidating manner," and "driving away steer." Approximately half of the cases cited pertain to Civil Court issues, several with high-powered litigants such as Simon R. Buford (1845 %u2013 1905), a pioneer and prominent businessman who owned S.R. Buford & Co. Another litigant was Amos C. Hall -- the most prominent banker in the Territory and owner of Hall-Harrington & Co. There are several entries of "Officers of the Court" who would later become prominent sheriffs and marshals, including Frank S. Metzel, who was shot and killed while intervening in a bank robbery, and James E. Summers, who was killed while attempting to serve an arrest warrant. It should be noted that this book contains many more names of prominent people. All cases presented, be they criminal or civil, are adjudicated from beginning to end -- from indictment to sentencing and from service of warrant to final litigation. The rarity of this book lies in the fact that it is unique and that it is the only documentation of the proceedings within. Staining inside the covers does not affect the interior. Very good(-) condition.

Manuscript - Unpublished Lecture Notes on "Ancient Modes of Travelling"

England 1882 - The writer presents himself as a namesake of John Taylor (1578-1653), known famously as the Water Poet, and is therefore presumably a descendant. He may possibly be John Taylor of Plymouth, horse currier [a person who curries horses - to curry-comb and prepare a horse]. The National Archives, Plymouth and West Devon Record Office, holds a mortgage (1867) and assignment papers (1870-1887) relating to this John Taylor, currier. An accompanying photographic postcard names a Mr. Sydney Taylor who was evidently affiliated the Plymouth Photographic Society and whom is most likely a relation, which may also lead to details about the author's lineage. Excerpts from the manuscript: "My object is to trace the progress of locomotion, to contrast the old times with the present, to mark the marvellous changes that have taken place, to note the conquests over difficulties." ".man is also induced with strong feelings of curiosity, and desires for investigation, and to this there seems to be no limit - he will pry into every corner of the world - he climbs the mountains and peeps into the mouths of the volcanoes - he burrows into the earth and searches for treasure there - he traverses the surface, across its oceans, or dives into the deep - no place seems too remote for his perseverance over the material - of mind over matter. " "To assist him in his travels many of the animals have been utilized - the ass, the horse, and the camel were in very early days. representations on the Egyptian and Assyrian monuments. Sledges were used for transporting the dead." ". When the horse was first reduced to submission and servitude we cannot tell. but it is believed that horses were first used to draw the luxurious or triumphal chariot or war-car. " ".Yoked in couples to the war-chariots, they formed the strength of the Egyptian Army. Egypt possessed a very valuable race of horses - specimens of which still linger in the Valley of the Upper Nile." ". It is worthy to notice that the Jews were forbidden to raise large companies of Horse like other nations, or to go down to Egypt to purchase them, less they should make improper treaties with the heathen, and put their trust in their horses & chariots rather than trusting in Jehovah." ". as a beast of burden the camel is most remarkable and the wisdom of the creator is most strikingly displayed in its adaptation to the Eastern World. his legs & thighs are stripped of every muscle, not essential to their movement. his foot is cushioned with a spongy pad, specially suited to a dry sandy surface. stomach is provided with water-cells. the hunch upon his back is really a storehouse from which the body is nourished when food is otherwise not obtainable." ". When Jacob fled across the Wilds of Mesopotamia we read, 'He rose up, and set his sons and wives upon camels', in like manner do the Arab migrate in the present day. There is one species of the camel, called Dromedary, which is distinguished for its fleetness and which is generally used for conveying intelligence. said to travel up to 100 miles in 24 hours.         Savannah River to Saint Helena Sound including Calibogue Sound, Port Royal and Broad River

London: Published by the Admiralty, 1882. Engraving. Printed on wove paper. In excellent condition. Image size: 25 1/4 x 38 1/4 inches. A fantastic Admiralty chart of the Savannah River to St. Helena Sound, produced by the British Hydrographic Office. The British Hydrographic Office was founded in 1795 by George III, who appointed Alexander Dalrymple as the first Hydrographer to the Admiralty. He immediately set to work but it was not until 1800 that the first Admiralty chart was published of the waters around Quiberon Bay in Brittany. Unlike the U. S. Coast Survey the Hydrographic Office was given permission to sell charts to the public and they produced a great number of sea charts covering every corner of the globe. Most of the Admiralty charts produced by the Hydrographic Office delineated coastline as well as high and low water marks and record depth of water as established by soundings. In addition these charts included information on shoals, reefs, and other navigational hazards that plagued mariners across the world. Thanks to the innovations of Sir Francis Beaufort, who developed the Beaufort Scale of wind strength, the British Hydrographic Office became one of the leading producers of sea charts. This large chart covers the Port Royal Sound including the Savannah River, the Calibogue Sound, and the Broad River. Water depths and sand bars are all carefully recorded, as are the various lighthouses along the coastline. This is an important sea chart of this area and a wonderful example of the maps produced by the British Hydrographic Office.

HEAD OF THE ARKANSAS, FREMONT PASS, COLORADO 1882

Jackson Phot., Denver, Colorado 1882 - HEAD OF THE ARKANSAS, FREMONT PASS, near Leadville, COLORADO, 1882. Original mammoth-sized (21 inches by 17 inches) albumen photographic print. Excellent tones and contrasts, exhibiting variations of "eggplant-skin-like" darker colors. Although W. H. Jackson was more regularly employed by The Denver & Rio Grande Railroad, this image appears to have been taken along the tracks of the Denver, South Park & Pacific Railroad. The destination of both railroads in this region of Colorado was Leadville where a magnificent silver boom was in progress. In capturing this image on a glass-plate negative, Jackson intended to exhibit to Eastern investors that the Rocky Mountain wilderness was being tamed by humankind's significant endeavors. Mammoth print is framed in a museum conservation manner and protected behind UV glass. [Attributes: First Edition]
