Three autograph letters signed "Peppina Verdi" to Giuditta [Ricordi] regarding Verdi's Otello

      - - 3 pp. Octavo. Dated Genoa, December 25, 1882. On stationery with Strepponi's monogram embossed at head. In Italian (with translation). Strepponi discusses family matters, and, most intriguingly, her husband's unfinished opera, Otello. She mentions the third pregnancy of [Filomena?] Maria [Cristina Verdi?] and the ill health of Ricordi's mother. Finally, she thanks Ricordi for a Christmas panettone, upon which a chocolate half-figure of Otello is mounted. ". Last night we received a wonderful panettone with a half-grown Otello! Poor thing! He's still in the limbo of the Holy Fathers! I thank you for my portion of panettone that I will eat! I believe that Verdi will write about the rest. " Slightly worn and foxed; creased at folds and with several short tears; slightly lacking at blank upper edge of central fold, with no loss to text.- 2 pp. Small quarto (ca. 90 x 116 mm.). Dated Genoa, April 23, 1888. On cardstock with Strepponi's decorative monogram embossed at head. In Italian (with translation). Strepponi writes of the "grumbling" weather, which has not adversely affected her health, and Verdi's wish to leave Genoa. She and her family will soon leave for the "poetic beaches" of St. Agata. She thanks Giuditta for "the cordial reception and continuous kindness we always find in Milan in the Casa Ricordi." "The Milanese sun accompanied us to the mountains, only to make room for clouds in Genoa. Verdi, in spite of the grumbling weather, wanted to leave right away Thursday morning, and the rain blessed Genoa and St. Agata for two days! We are covering up all furniture and I think we will leave for the poetic beaches of St. Agata as soon as the illustrious Greis comes back to us. The apartment in Genoa is a huge mess; that's why I'm writing to you so little. " Very slightly worn.- 2 pp. Small oblong octavo (ca. 59 x 114 mm.). Dated Paris, October 15, [18]94. On visiting card with "Giuseppina Verdi" printed to recto. In Italian (with translation). Strepponi writes about the first Paris production of Otello, in which tenor Alberto Saleza almost strangled soprano Rose Caron. She hopes Ricordi, who has escaped to the country, will be able to rest. If her husband comes to Milan, she may "embrace" her good friend in person. ". As you know, Otello went really well, but he made one of his bungles: he almost strangled Desdemona with his jealousy and today Madame Caron is in bed. For the second performance she will be replaced by Bosmann!!! Mah!!!" Slightly worn. Giuseppina Strepponi, who became Verdi's companion in 1846 and his second wife in 1859, was a gifted soprano in her own right. Donizetti wrote his Adelia (1841) for her, and she created Abigaille in Verdi's Nabucco (1842). She retired from the stage in 1846. She was described as having a "?limpid, penetrating, smooth voice, seemly action, a lovely figure; and to Nature's liberal endowments she adds an excellent technique'; her ?deep inner feeling' was also praised." Julian Budden in Grove Music Online. Giuditta Ricordi was the wife of Verdi's music publisher, Giulio Ricordi (1840-1912). "From 1879 until 1887, Giulio Ricordi worked tirelessly to bring about Verdi's composition of Otello, arguably his greatest masterpiece. The annual Christmas cakes presented to the Verdis from 1881 on were designed to keep the 'chocolate project' in the forefront of the composer's mind." Sotheby's catalogue, December 6, 1996. In the nineteenth century the noun "chocolate" was also used to describe men of African descent. For further explanation of the racial and cultural connotations of the word, see Naomi Andre: "From Otello to Porgy: Blackness, Masculinity, and Morality in Opera," in Blackness in Opera, pp. 12-13. Otello was first performed at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan on February 5, 1887. The Paris première of the opera, which Strepponi mentions, took place on October 12, 1894. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER A Tale for Young People of All AGes

Boston: J. R. Osgood and Co, 1882. First American edition, with "Franklin Press" on the copyright page. With 192 illustrations. Square 8vo, publisher’s original sheep binding, a deluxe binding offered by the publisher, one of a small number, now quite scarce. 411 pp. A handsome copy, the sheep in quite good condition with some typical rubbing and an antique strengthening to the hinges. All in all, a quite collectible copy with some of the age evidence one would expect with all of the sheep bindings. THE RARE FIRST STATE IN ONE OF THE MOST ELUSIVE BINDING STATES. Twain's timeless tale of two little boys who switch places to see how the other half lives. This is the scarcest and most expensive binding offered by the publishers and is very elusive in the marketplace. THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER was quite unlike anything Twain had done up till that time. It is a fine adventure with a delicate vein of “Twainian” humor running throughout. Twain took up a short domicile in Montreal in an attempt to establish residency there so that he could register the copy-right in Canada, England and the United States. His past encounters with piracy led him to make this attempt.

Ned Nimble Amongst the Bushrangers of Australia.

      - London, Edwin J. Brett [188-?]. Two volumes large octavo, bound together in a modern wrapper with a copy of a cover mounted; original illustrated wrappers bound in. 276pp, 23 full page illustrations. Some repairs and splodges to the wrappers; natural browning of the paper in the first volume; still, rather good. Ned Nimble's Australian romp appeared in the 'Boys of England' in 1882 and in parts and collected editions in two versions. This is the first, coming out of the Boys of England offices. The other comes out of Harkaway House, a name change made in the early nineties. The second version came in, I think, 17 weekly parts adding up to 264 pages. The wrappers are sensibly recycled with part numbers and price at the top (parts 28 and 30, price 4d) and volume numbers and new price stamped at the bottom (Nimble Series Vol 9 and 10; price one shilling). And the volumes are recycled from unsold parts with the original stab marks visible. I don't get how they could have spun this out to 30 parts, there are clearly 23. Trove finds two copies of the first and one of this. But the covers of that one have different Nimble series volume numbers. Confused? Bored?

Manuscript Travel Diaries of Around the World - MP of Whitby

World, 1882. Italy, England, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, America, 1882-1902. Archive of manuscript diaries, 8 volumes, penned by British peer and aristocrat Ernest William Beckett, 2nd Baron Grimthorpe (1856-1917), mostly written during his tenure as MP of Whitby, also at the time of his affair with Alice Keppel who would later become the favourite mistress of King Edward VII and who is mentioned in at least one of the journals. Content deals extensively with his travels around the world, the earliest volume also containing social observations and reflections which reveals his character in the making. Includes a yearly diary for 1882, 1892, 1894, 1895, 1896, 1898, 1899, and 1902, respectively, with varying amounts of entries. Seven are small 8vo. leather bound volumes titled in gilt by the publisher, and measuring approximately 9 cm x 13,5 cm. The earliest is an 8vo. diary in green cloth boards, measuring approximately 13,5 cm x 20,5 cm. Very minor age-toning to boards, otherwise all volumes are in very good condition. Eight years in the life of a widely travelled and well-connected British banker and politician are offered up in the personal diaries of Baron Ernest William Beckett, which features innumerable important colonial names, travels to some of the world's most exotic and remote locations, confirmation of a romantic affair with a royal mistress, some parliamentary duties, and glimpses into an intermittent family life. The earliest and most detailed journal was penned in 1882, the Baron being twenty-five years of age. A most interesting read, with this diary we can see Beckett developing theories of what life ought to be, in terms of relationships and society. He learns about banking and politics through his father's work, and by attending political meetings. His passions include travel, theatre, literature (including Ruskin, Byron, etc), socializing with upper class families, and learning Italian. In February he makes a trip to Paris, continuing by rail he passes Marseilles and arrives at Cannes, this region becoming a favourite place to travel to, as seen by his frequent returns in future diaries. He also visits Monte Carlo, then goes on to tour Italy - Pisa, Rome, the Island of Capri, Naples, and so forth. He ascends Mount Vesuvius, and tours the Vatican including the Sistine Chapel. This volume also contains excellent descriptions of Italy as he travels extensively, perhaps for the first time as an adult. Some excerpts from the 1882 diary: 6 January 1882. "Spent the day in an atmosphere of politics - went with Papa to York to a meeting called together to decide on a candidate for the [...] Riding." 22 January 1882. "English is a nation of travellers. Men are generally over anxious. It is a common complaint that life is too short..." 24 February 1882. "Everything is more enjoyable in anticipation than in possession. I wonder if a wife is the same - it would seem so, by the number of unhappy marriages there are. " 11 March 1882. "Ascended Vesuvius... a vast heap of ashes... Up this we are dragged by an hydraulic railway... first walked over the old crater covered in sulphur... descended the mountain a little way to see the stream of lava which was flowing..." 17 March 1882. [Naples] "... museum... bronzes... some Pompeiian frescoes... sculptures... most of it from Pompeii Herculaneum..." 17 May 1882. "Went to Leeds. A furious debate in the Commons. [William Ewart] Gladstone violently attacked by A.J.[Arthur James Balfour] Dalfour..." 14 October 1882. "An ignorance of our past - the world lives now in a selfish absorption in the present, knows nothing of history, cares for nothing but the petty events which surrounds us..." 18 October 1882. "Preparations are being made to receive our soldiers in grand style on their return from Egypt..." End excerpts. The diaries continue ten years later, in 1892, a year of extensive travel for Beckett. In January, at the start of the volume, he is in Rome enjoying the opera, fine dining, visiting historic sites and posh places of various sorts including the Villa Doria Pamphili. From Rome he travels to Naples, then to Palermo where he spent some time with the Whitakers, [Sicilan-English ornithologist Joseph Whitaker (1850-1936), and his wife Tina].of the prominent Yorkshire family who developed the fortified wine industry in Marsala, Sicily, and settled there. At Taormina he writes to Mrs. Lee, referring to his wife by her maiden name, which he does throughout the years. End of February he is back in Rome with "Mrs. Lee." He returns to Monte Carlo in Monaco, then Cannes, where he visits some affluent English friends. Back in London, he lunches with banker, art collector, and politician Ferdinand de Rothschild (1839-1898) on 23 March 1892. Two days later he is at a dinner party with other aristocrats and politicians of London, radical statesman Randolph Henry Spencer-Churchill (Winston Churchill's father), barrister and politician Arnold Morley, and others. He dined with Churchill quite frequently. The remainder of the year he is mostly in London, sometimes in Whitby, and makes jottings of his work, meetings, a lecture he presented. The 1894 volume records tours of Germany and Italy, with brief sojourns in Scotland and France. In 1895 he makes few entries until April, when he is in his beloved Cannes. This volume also confirms his involvement with Alice Frederica Keppel who would later become an exceptionally influential mistress of King Henry Edward VII for twelve years. Some excerpts from the 1895 diary: 6 April, "At Cannes, Fine day...Drive to Antibes with mother and took train to Nice, where I met Miss Keppel... at Café Francais. We went to flower shew. Got back for dinner..." 8 April, "... After lunch went to Monte Carlo... at dinner... W. Walrun, Rev. Jack P. & Miss Keppel..." End excerpts. After more continental travels, the latter portion of the year 1895 sees the diarist beginning a voyage around the world, arriving at Bombay the 24th of October. He is at Karachi in Sindh within a week's time, then off to Quetta where he visits the British fortification built in 1889. Continuing on, he visits Fort Sandeman, a village now called Zhob, situated in Balochistan, and to the "Punjab Frontier" where he met the German General von Sauer, and where he had a "very fine view" of the "Afghan Frontier". A most adventurous journey he continues to Peshawar and Lahore. From Jahore Beckett travels to Delhi, arriving there 3 January 1896, and immediately sets off to Jeypore, for experiences entirely unavailable in his native country. On 7 January 1896, he writes, "Jeypore... streets wide & well laid out full of people (in every sort of coloured costume)... houses painted... trees on each side of street... I saw very large monkeys.... Rode an elephant last mile of journey. Saw several aligators in small lake at fort of Palace..." At Ajmer he saw the burial place of Moinuddin Chishti (1141-1236), and proceeded from there to Jodhpur, Benares, and Cawnpore, arriving there 39 years after the Indian rebellion of 1857 and the Siege of the city. Sailing across the Bay of Bengal to Burma, he disembarks at Rangoon 1 February, taking a steamboat north on the Irrawaddy River to Mandelay, then proceeding to Bhamo and back. From Rangoon where he visits the Golden Pagoda, he travels to Penang in Malaysia, and enjoys the colonial sights of Singapore including its spectacular Botanical Gardens. The world voyage continues on a vessel called Kaiser-i-Hind, which takes him to China, arriving at Hong Kong on 9 March 1896 after a rough passage on the South China Sea. From Hong Kong he goes to Canton (Guangzhou), then to Japan, arriving at Nagasaki on 17 March, and making a good tour of Kyoto, and Tokyo, with sojourns to Yokohama and Nikko, approximately two weeks in Japan. A Pacific crossing to America was without a doubt the next adventure to be had. The entry of 5 May 1896 reports Beckett's arrival at Honolulu, 4 pm, and check-in at the Hawaiian Hotel. A brief stay on the island, permits a tour to the Punch Bowl Crater (Puowaina) and an interview with Queen Liliuokalani. His visit to Honolulu was only three years after the overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii. Continuing on the same British Steamer, SS China, San Francisco was the next port of call. On the 13th he went to the races and toured China Town, the following day to the Hopkins House (the mansion of Mark Hopkins, s founder of Central Pacific Railroad). By rail he continues to Chicago, where he takes in an exhibition at a park. The following day he makes his way to Niagara Falls on a steamer, then travels to New York City to make the voyage home to London, concluding the world tour. In September, he attended a Yeomanry meeting held in Kirkstall, which Mr. & Mrs. Keppel also attended. None too idle, in the months of October, November and December, Beckett makes brief sojourns to Paris. On the 31st of December he closes the year in Rome. At the start of the year 1898 Beckett spends some time in Cannes. Springtime is spent in England. In the summer he travels in Germany including Frankfurt, Bad Wildbag in the district of Karlsruhe, and Salzburg, from where he travels to Vienna. Occasionally noting important world events in his volumes, on 2 September 1898 he remarks, "Khartoum taken," referring to the Battle of Omdurman and the Siege of Khartoum. On 6 September he is in Budapest in Hungary for a brief tour, returning home via Paris. In 1899 he remains mostly in England, noting Queen Victoria's 80th birthday celebration. A few days are spent at Duart [possibly Duart Castle on the Isle of Mull, Scotland], then a return to Italy ensues, for some delightful touring of Florence, Bellagio and Stresa. The 1902 diary begins with the writer already in Hong Kong, making a quick roundabout sojourn to Canton and Macao, then back to Hong Kong, and, embarking on a journey similar to that which he made in 1896, proceeding to Singapore. This time he visits Surabaya in Indonesia, and then Yogyakarta (here written as Djockja, often seen as Jogja), the Borobudur temple, the city of Buitenzorg (Bogor), Batavia, and back to Singapore where he settled at the famous Raffles Hotel. Next stop, Colombo in Ceylon (Sri Lanka), and a drive up to Mount Lavinia. On 23 February, the ship stopped at Aden for coaling. After one week navigating the Red Sea and cruising into the Mediterranean, Beckett reports passing Crete on the 1st day of March, his destination ultimately being Rome. Staying there until at least the 14th of March, on this day he pens the last of his travel entries. The remainder of this volume is blank, with the exception of one entry, made in England 2 May 1902. Presenting a firsthand record of a nobleman's life and travels, from 1882 to the turn of the century, much remains to be read and discovered in these eight manuscript diaries. British banker and Conservative politician Ernest William Beckett, 2nd Baron Grimthorpe (1856-1917) sat in the House of Commons as Member of Parliament for Whitby from 1885 until 1905 when he inherited the Grimthorpe peerage. He later became a partner in the banking firm of Beckett & Co, of Leeds, owned by his father. He was a major in the Yorkshire Hussars Yeomanry Cavalry, was commissioned for active service in the Imperial Yeomanry during the Second Boer War, and returned to the Yorkshire Hussars when he resigned from active duty in July 1902. On 4 October 1883 Ernest married American heiress Lucy Tracy Lee (1864-1891), or Luie, as she was better known, an event which was announced in Vanity Fair. She was the daughter of William Tracy Lee. They had 3 children: Lucy Katherine Beckett (born 1884), Helen Muriel Beckett (born 1886), Ralph William Ernest Beckett (born 1891). Luie died after bearing their son and heir, Ralph William Ernest Beckett. Ernest also fathered a son, Lancelot, and a daughter, Violet born in 1894, with Mrs Alice Frederica Keppel (née Edmonstone; 1868-1947), who was later the mistress of the Prince of Wales. Both children were illegitimate. [Her husband was Lieutenant-Colonel the Honorable George Keppel, MVO (1865-1947) whom she married in 1891. The couple had an open marriage, both having affairs. When Edward, Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII) would come to visit, George would conveniently leave. ] In 1904, Ernest Beckett bought a ruined farmhouse outside Ravello, on the Amalfi Coast in southern Italy. He expanded it and transformed it into a fortified palatial residence with towers, battlements and a mixture of Arabic, Venetian and Gothic details. He called it Villa Cimbrone. Between the house and the cliff edge he redeveloped the garden, high above the Gulf of Salerno. The garden is an eccentric mixture of formal, English rose beds, Moorish tea houses, picturesque grottoes and classical temples. After Earnest Beckett's death in 1917, the villa passed to his son Ralph. Ernest Beckett's daughter Lucy (Lucille Katherine Beckett, 1884-1979) also lived at the villa, where she was a keen gardener and breeder of roses, including the "Rose of Ravello" in the thirties. Ralph made Villa Cimbrone available to No. 1 Special Force as a rest and relaxation center during the Second World War. Many famous visitors came to the villa during the Beckett family's ownership including Sir Winston Churchill, Virginia Woolf, Leonard Woolf, E. M. Forster, John Maynard Keynes, and Lytton Strachey, D. H. Lawrence, Vita Sackville-West, Edward James, Diana Mosley, Henry Moore, T. S. Eliot, Jean Piaget, the Duke and Duchess of Kent, Greta Garbo and her then-lover Leopold Stokowski. The villa was sold in 1960 to the Vuilleumier family, who used it first as a private family home, and for the past few years as a hotel. Around the time of the Second World War the villa began to see decline. Marco Vuilleumier decided to undertake the task of recovering, conserving and protecting the cultural heritage site. It has indeed been restored to its former standing as a prestigious historical site and botanical garden. For centuries an aristocratic residence, Villa Cimbrone is now an exclusive, refined Hotel de Charme overlooking the Bay of Sorrento. The villa is now composed of many salvaged architectural elements from other parts of Italy and elsewhere. Little of the original structure remains visible. The first reliable mentions of Villa Cimbrone can be found around the 11th century, intermingling with those of Ravello's golden era. The origins of its name come from the rocky outcrop on which it stands: this was part of a large estate with lush vegetation covering over eight hectares that was known as "Cimbronium". It initially belonged to the aristocratic Acconciajoco family. In the mid-1300s it passed into the hands of the powerful and wealthy Fuscos, a noble family from Ravello who were related to the Pitti family in Florence and the D'Angiò family from Naples. Ernest's cousin was Edmund Beckett, 1st Baron Grimthorpe was an architect, horologist, and designer of the clock mechanism of Big Ben. . Very Good.

En Folkefiende [An Enemy of the People.] Skuespil I Fem Akter.

Gyldendalske Boghandels 1882 - FIRST EDITION, pp. [iv], 219, crown 8vo, original grey wrappers printed in black to both covers, ownership inscription of Erik af Edholm at head of front with later ownership inscription above (see below), spine cracking (but holding) with loss at head, sound. The scarce wrappers issue of this important play by the Norwegian dramatist - 'a comedy, [.] based on a serious idea' (letter to Frederik Hegel, June 1882), written in response to the scandal created by 'Gengangere'. It is among the most modern of Ibsen's works, and has been consistently performed for both stage and screen. This is a significant association copy, belonging to Erik Wilhelm af Edholm, a high-ranking Swedish military officer who became director at the Kungliga Operan (Royal Opera) and the Kungliga Dramatiska Teatern (Royal Dramatic Theatre) in Stockholm - in the latter context he was responsible for bringing the work of Strindberg and Ibsen to a wider audience, and he corresponded with both playwrights. This play was performed at the theatre in March 1883. The later ownership inscription is simply the word 'dubbl' - likely a playful way of conveying that the book then passed to Edholm's son of the same name (Erik Gustaf ad Edholm), like his father a high-ranking military officer.

Lyon, A. Storck; Paris, A. Chérié, 1882. Bon exemplaire.

It has tape to the spine. It is in Very Good Condition for the year. The tape is neatly done and holds the book together well, the covers have some marks and age toning , mainly to the bottom of the rear cover. Internally it is very nice and clean and hasn't been opened for a while. No restoration other than the tape applied many years ago. A hard year to find.
