Marion Fay

London: Chapman and Hall, 1882. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. A Very Good copy of this Trollope triple decker in the publisher's original cloth, decorated in black (spine ends a bit worn, evidence of prior lending library label to each volume's front board, common soiling, lending library label to each volume's front pastedown, label number neatly written on each volume's spine, page blocks settled, Volume III's hinges cracked); a very good copy of a Trollope title generally found quite faded and worn when found in the scarce original cloth, with copies tending to have been so worn as to have required rebinding. The novel centers around the Marquis of Kingsbury and his second wife who labors to see that the children from the Marquis's first marriage do not marry, so that her own will inherit his title and wealth. Then, of course, onto the scene then comes Marion Fay, a girl from the town who falls in love with the Marquis's son. A Very Good copy of a Trollope triple decker that often turns up rebound.

        Die fröhliche Wissenschaft.

Chemnitz, Schmeitzner, 1882. 8vo. Contemporary half cloth with gilt lines and gilt leather title-label to spine. A very fine, fresh, and completely unrestored copy. 255 pp. With the ownership signature of Oskar Schlemm, dated 1884, to title-page.. The very rare first edition, first issue - one of only 212 copies - of what is arguably Nietzsche's most important work, namely the work in which he introduces his three most important concepts: "God is Dead", the "Eternal Return of the Same", and the "Superman", which together provide the basis for almost all of his later writings, including "Also sprach Zarathustra" (part 1 of which was published the following year). "The Gay Science" was originally published in the usual 1.000 copies, but by 1886, 788 of them remained unsold; these remainders were sold to the publisher Fritzsch, who destroyed the original title-page and re-issued the work along with new material and with a new title-page in 1887. Thus, merely 212 copies exist of this first issue, making it one of the scarcest of Nietzsche's works to find in the first edition. This main work of modern philosophy is absolutely central to Nietzsche's philosophy. Not only does it introduce the concepts and notions that we now primarily connect with Nietzsche, it also constitutes one of the clearest and most profound expositions of his philosophy. "The Gay Science" contains Nietzsche's first consideration of the idea of 1) the "eternal recurrence", a concept which would become critical in his next work "Thus Spoke Zarathustra" and underpins much of the later works. In fact, Nietzsche himself considers section 341 to be the very first articulation of the basic idea of Zarathustra:"What if some day or night a demon were to steal after you into your loneliest loneliness and say to you: 'This life as you now live it and have lived it, you will have to live once more and innumerable times more' [...] Would you not throw yourself down and gnash your teeth and curse the demon who spoke thus? Or have you once experienced a tremendous moment when you would have answered him: 'You are a god and never have I heard anything more divine.'"2) "God is dead", formulated for the very first time in section 108:"After Buddha was dead, peopleshowed his shadow for centuries afterwards in acave,-an immense frightful shadow. God is dead:but as the human race is constituted, there willperhaps be caves for millenniums yet, in whichpeople will show his shadow.-And we-we havestill to overcome his shadow!"And in paragraph 125 we find the famous sentence depicting the parable of the madman seaching for God, accusing us all of being the murderers of God:"'Whither is God?' he cried; 'I will tell you. We have killed him-you and I. All of us are his murderers..."3) the "Uebermensch" or "Superman", which is mentioned for the first time in Nietzcshe's writings in section 143. "Nietzsche wrote "The Gay Science", which he later described as "perhaps my most personal book", when he was at the height of his intellectual powers, and the reader will find in it an extensive and sophisticated treatment of the philosophical themes and views which were most central to Nietzsche's own thought and which have been most influential on later thinkers. These include the death of God, the problem of nihilism, the role of truth, falsity and the will-to-truth in human life, the doctrine of the eternal recurrence, and the question of the proper attitude to adopt toward human suffering and toward human achievement." (From the Cambridge University Press translation of 2001).Oskar Schlemm was a circuit judge in Uelzen i Lower Saxony. His son, Walter, belonged to Ernst Hardt's circle of friends, being a fellow George- and Nietzche-worshipper. Schaberg: 35

"Bird's Eye View of the City of Denver, Colorado"

Cincinnati, OH: Strobridge Lithograph Company, 1882. EARLY VIEW OF DENVER, CO. Dimensions are apprx. 28"x 59" There are 16 vignettes surrounding the view of Denver in 1859.They include City Hall, Denver High School, Rocky Mountain Brewery, Union Depot, Tabor Block, St. Mary's Academy, Arapahoe County Court House, St. James Hotel, Silver Queen Hotel, Central Presbyterian Church, St. Johns Cathedral, Col. National Bank, Windsor Hotel, Lavetta Place, National Mining & Industrial Exposition Building, and Tabor Opera House. With the invention of lithograph in the 19th century, the birds-eye view became not only a useful tool for documentation but as a marketing tool for developers as well as merchants. These visually attractive panoramas were easily understood and perhaps more meaningful to a public largely unskilled in map reading. The first formal survey of town views began in the 16th century with the publication of George Braun and Frans Hogenburg's Civitates Orbis Terrarium (Cologne, 1593). It took Braun and Hogenburg over forty years to collect the 305 plans contained in the volumes that form the complete work. The town view can be seen from the 16th century onwards.. Book.

Birch bark has a pale violet/grey tint for all but the middle facing leaves. With: two copies of a 1928 Lummis Foundation catalogue entitled "The Works of Chas F. Lummis," published the same year of his death. The catalogue indicates that the booklet went out of print in 1882. Lummis first published this set of poems in 1878, between semesters at Harvard. This 1882 printing is concurrent with the time in which he was living at his first wife's family farm in Chillicothe and working at a newspaper before famously tramping across the country to Los Angeles. Very little discernible wear to poetry booklet or the two catalogues.

        Razskazy [Stories]

St. Petersburg: Tip. A. M. Kotomina i Ko, 1882. First Edition. Octavo. Quarter marbled calf with marbled-paper boards; spine on five raised bands; gilt title to spine in Cyrillic; original front wrapper bound in (!); [5], 4-216, [1] pp. About very good; boards and hinges rubbed; front hinge a bit weak; front wrapper and title page lightly soiled; text clean save for one or two smudges. The first printing in book form of Vsevolod Garshin's famous stories, which originally appeared in Saltykov- Shchedrin's Otechestvennye zapiski (Notes of the Fatherland) and other so-called thick journals of the late nineteenth-century. This publication was prepared by Garshin himself, who was said to have distributed the printed books to Petersburg shops himself. It contains some of the most iconic stories, which established his innovative, unique approach to Russian realism: "Chetyre dnia," "Proisshestvie," "Trus," "Vstrecha," "Khudozhniki," "Noch'," "Attalea princeps," and "To, chego ne bylo." It's appearance met with the approval of Ivan Turgenev, who treated Garshin as his literary successor. A second volume of stories appeared later in the same year. Both volumes are rare; KVK, OCLC show one copy of the present one, at Giessen University.

'The Orient Liner "Austral" sunk in Sydney Harbour' [pencil title to verso]

Sydney, 1882. Albumen silver print, 150 x 200mm, pencil description to verso; a little creased and minor tear to lower margin, but very good. Remarkable photo showing the S.S. Austral after it foundered in Sydney Harbour while coaling off Kirribilli in November 1882. The striking scene shows the vessel sunk past the gunwales and listing heavily to starboard, the masts and funnels depicted starkly against the fog and calm sea. Around the wreck various smaller boats are in attendance; the perspective of the image looks south-east past Fort Denison towards Clark Island and Double Bay. The wreck provoked astonishment and curiosity among Sydney-siders, becoming a popular tourist attraction for the ferries of the harbour for some three months. A piece in the Sydney Morning Herald pondered the strangeness of a ship wrecking in such sheltered conditions, commenting that the 'Austral has not even the excuse of the sudden gust, she sank as by some evil influence, how far assisted by man's neglect remains to be shown.' The Austral was ultimately refloated and resumed service on the Although the present image appears to be unrecorded, it is similar to a photograph held by the National Library taken by Sydney photographer John Paine. Kent-born Paine, who won awards at the Sydney and Calcutta International Exhibitions, was a well established commercial and private photographer at the time working out of a studio in Waterloo.
