In 1944, Richardson went to Saipan to review Army troops and present awards. He did this without first consulting with Gen.         Handwritten Unpublished Poem with an original cabinet photograph

Denver, CO 1882 - American writer best known for his children's poetry and humorous essays. Exceptional unpublished signed poem, titled "My Thirty Second Birthday," 1 page, 8.5 x 4.75 inches, four stanzas. Written on the back of a restaurant check made out to Fields for $3.00 at the Hotel Brunswick in Denver, Colorado, on August 31, 1882. This humorous poem was created on the spot for his friend Corporal Raymond, who accompanied Field to the restaurant in celebration of his 32nd birthday -- and then picked up the check for $3.00, in small part, consisting of the 2nd and 4th verses: "The gallant Corporal Raymond said 'Who dares to send an order here?' Yet by the living and the dead - And by the hairs of this proud head, if it be Field - there's difference there! So Corporal Raymond paid the bill - Three dollars! Blush O muse, to say - Three dollars for the juice of still - And meats he took to make his fill - So fritter man their gold away!" Accompanied by an original cabinet photograph taken on that memorable day by Charles Bohm, depicting Eugene Field, Corporal Raymond, and two unidentified people posed in a studio setting, possibly unique. The poem has three horizontal folds, several small smudges, and a light strip of uneven toning on the right edge. Very good condition. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Leipzig 3rd September 1882 - 4pp manuscript letter in German dated Leipzig 3rd September 1882. ENGLISH TRANSLATION. "Leipzig, September 3, 1882 Dear Mr. Tuckett: This morning I received your valuable communication for 'Greece'. I am thanking you for this in the most heartfelt manner, as well as for the proposed additional help in the new project. I give you the assurance that I will take the same care of it as I did with the two volumes Palestine & Syria and Lower Egypt, so that all the support I get in that matter will result in my thanks and goodwill. From the two mentioned volumes you will have realised how much I am aiming at giving this Oriental enterprise a solid and scientific foundation for which I want to raise interest among eminent specialists, in order to gather the best possible material. Besides that, two of my colleagues and me, naturally each on his own, will travel in that country in order to be able to give in the book, if possible, firsthand information about each place gathered on location. When the manuscript has thus been finished I will have it typeset and send proofs to all the gentlemen who helped, asking them to revise the text again and meticulously. Please excuse me for having informed you about the production of these volumes in such detail. I felt the need to give - specially to you - a rough idea about that. I don't know yet whether I will come to Euboea myself; nevertheless, with your permission and referring to you I will try to get interest in the handbook as well from your friend Capt. Mansell in Chalkis. [in English:] Ever yours sincerely Karl Baedeker. Today at lunchtime I received a letter from Sparta written by a colleague who has been travelling since last autumn; I will have a passage from it copied. The accident, survived just by chance, is not without interest." This letter written by Karl Baedeker gives an interesting insight to the workings of the Baedeker company and the detailed attention they devoted to their guide-books. This letter was written a year before the first Baedeker on Greece was published in 1883. The last part of his Oriental enterprise.

[Bermuda. ca. 1882]. - Sixteen leaves, containing thirty-one mounted photographs, each approximately 7 x 9 inches. Oblong folio. Contemporary black cloth, neatly rebacked and recornered with contemporary black morocco, gilt. Light wear and soiling to cards. Images generally crisp and clean. Very good plus. A handsome 19th-century photo album which includes the work of one of the great photographers of Bermuda. Three of the images have been definitely attributed to N.E. Lusher - the first, showing the construction of a gangway to a docked vessel at St. Georges; the eighth image, showing a shaded crossroads; and the charming ninth image of a black woman and a young boy seated in a donkey cart. The remainder of the album includes a number of images of Bermuda subjects which are of a similarly high quality which suggest that they are all the work of Lusher. Lusher apparently worked as a professional photographer from 1882 onwards, and is known for a wide range of work. His success more or less tied in with the explosion of tourism to the island that followed the first visit of Princess Louise to Bermuda in 1883. The images in the present album offer a good selection of the best of his work. They range from the reportage of the dock scenes, to the topographical images of the lighthouse and other island locations, to the true art of landscape photography, to the whimsy of images which feature the local inhabitants. Eighteen of the photographs have been identified as images of Bermuda, while the remainder show unidentified American coastal towns, possibly Nova Scotia, including an image of a coastal fortification, possibly in Halifax. The Bermuda images include a view of the docks at St. George's; a view of the town of St. George's; a stone quarry; royal palms on the road to Paget; a donkey cart; Gibb's Hill Lighthouse; a field of Easter lilies; and stalactites, possibly in the Crystal Cave.

Catalogue of the Collection of Pictures, works of art, and decorative objects, the property of His Grace the Duke of Hamilton, K.T. Saturday, June 17, and Monday, June 19, 1882, and the following day [Five Portions complete].

Christie, Manson & Woods, London 1882 - 234 pp. + plates. 8vo. Cloth. Hardback. Illus. with 77 monochrome carbon print photographic plates. Two versions of this catalogue were produced, one without plates, and this, the illustrated version, with carbon prints by James Craig Annan (1864-1946), son of the Scottish photographer Thomas Annan. Annan was only 18 when he produced this series of prints (uncredited) for the spectacular Duke of Hamilton sale. There were 2213 lots auctioned over fifteen days in five sections which brought in 397,000 British pounds! In addition to the paintings offered, which could have easily formed their own museum -works by Botticelli, Breugel, Da Vinci, Durer, Fra Angelico, Giorgione, Holbein, Rembrandt, Rubens, Titian, Van Dyke, Veronese, and more- there was French furniture, Asian bronzes and lacquers, Sevres and Desden porcelain, and decorative objects in profusion. Photographs were somewhat new to illustrating auctions and "this is an early use of photography for a sale catalogue," according to William Buchanan in his "J. Craig Annan. Selected Texts and Bibliography," (Oxford. 1994), p. 137. Annan would go on to become an important British pictorial photographer and one of its master photogravure printers, contributing both his own work and gravures for other British photographers to Stiglitz' Camera Work (the January 1914 issue -no. 45- was devoted entirely to him). Scarce, especially in such beautiful condition and in such a fine binding. Buchanan 1. A near fine copy, rubbing on verso of plates, plates numbered in pencil.         Der Weltteil Australien

Leipzig and Prague: G. Freytag [and] Tempsky, 1882-, 1883. Four volumes, octavo, frontispieces in each volume, maps and other illustrations; original blindstamped green cloth. Influential German study of Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific. Karl Emil Jung, who had taught classics at Eton, emigrated to Australia in the 1850s, took part in several journeys into the interior, spent some years as a squatter, and worked as an educationalist including serving as Inspector of Schools for South Australia. He spent altogether more than twenty years in Australia, returning to Germany in the late-1870s where he wrote this extensive description of Australia and the Pacific with an audience of would-be German emigrants in mind. The book is divided into sections on: Australia and its native inhabitants; the Australian colonies including Tasmania; Melanesia, Polynesia; New Zealand; Micronesia. Jung became the German authority on Oceanic matters, and supplied information and articles on Australia and the Pacific to numerous periodicals, encyclopedias and text-books. His long stay in Australia had made him uniquely placed to give a comprehensive description of life downunder, and his book is very well illustrated with woodcuts, many of them full-page, of cities, landscapes, native peoples and natural features.
