        The Merv Oasis

London: Smith, Elder, & Co.,, 1882. Travels and Adventures East of the Caspian during the Years 1879-80-81 including Five Months' Residence among the Tekkês of Merv. 2 volumes, octavo. Original brown cloth, gilt lettered spines. Engraved portrait frontispiece of O'Donovan, 15 plates of maps, plans and facsimiles (some folding), large coloured folding map of the Russo-Persian frontier (in pocket at end of volume II). Very slight "dishing" of covers otherwise an excellent set. First edition. "In 1879 O'Donovan, still in search of adventure, undertook, again as Daily News correspondent, his celebrated journey to Merv in Turkestan—a daring, difficult, and hazardous feat, with which his name became associated. From the Russian advanced posts on the south-eastern shores of the Caspian Sea he travelled through Khorasan, and eventually, with great difficulty and at considerable risk, accompanied only by two native servants, he reached Merv. He was at first suspected by the Turkomans of being an agent of the Russians, who were then threatening an advance on Merv. For several months he consequently remained in Merv in a sort of honourable captivity, in danger of death any day, and with no prospect of release. According to his own account, O'Donovan helped mount artillery, and was made one of the ruling triumvirate. He managed to send into Persia a message, which was thence telegraphed to John Robinson, the manager of the Daily News. In this dispatch O'Donovan explained his position, and appealed to his friend: 'For God's sake get me out of this'. Robinson applied to the Foreign Office and to the Russian ambassador in London, and immediate steps were taken to effect O'Donovan's release. However, by his own efforts, combining courage with diplomacy, he extricated himself from his perilous position. On returning to London 'the man of Merv' was a celebrity, and he read a paper to the Royal Geographical Society. In 1882 he published a book on his adventures, The Merv oasis: travels and adventures east of the Caspian during the years 1879, 1880, and 1881" (ODNB).

Polychromatic Decoration As Applied to Buildings in the Mediaeval Sty

1882. AUDSLEY, W. & G. Polychromatic Decoration. As Applied to Buildings in the Mediaeval Style. viii, 32 pp. Illustrated with 36 plates, each with accompanying text leaves. Folio, 402 x 277 mm, bound in publisher's cloth. London: Henry Sotheran, 1882. |~||~||~||~| First Edition of this Victorian classic. The fine chromolithographs, printed by the Firmin-Didot, depict Mediaeval ornamentation as it applies to various architectural structures. The range of pattern, colour, and narrative elements were intended for the architectural profession but also for amateur decorators. The Audsley Brothers (George Ashdown and William James) were trained as architects in Scotland and moved to Liverpool where they established a practice in 1860. Until their collaboration ended in 1884, they produced many picture books on the various aspects of their profession. By 1890 both brothers were settled in the United States where their combination of scholarship and practice were just as successful. Polychromatic Decoration is a typical Victorian pattern book of the type made popular by Owen Jones with his Grammar of Ornament. Marginal tear on Plate XXII not affecting image, light scattered foxing, else a very good copy. McLean, Victorian Book Design, pg. 133.

Black-bordered Executive Mansion card signed ?Robert T. Lincoln / Jan 27. 1882.? as Secretary of War, 5? x 3.25?. In exceptionally fine condition. ?On July 2, 1881, President Garfield was scheduled to leave for a trip to New England. While some cabinet members and their wives were scheduled to go on the trip, [Garfield?s Secretary of War] Lincoln was unable to depart until the following day. He went to Washington, D.C.?s Baltimore and Potomac train station that morning to meet the President and let him know that the Lincolns would be along on July 3. He was about forty feet away and walking toward President Garfield and Secretary of State James G. Blaine when Charles Guiteau approached from behind and shot Garfield twice. ?By Lincoln?s own recollection, ?I think I reached him in fifteen seconds.? Secretary Lincoln immediately sent for Dr. D.W. Bliss, then ordered four companies of soldiers to immediately come to the train depot for security. When Garfield was moved back to the White House, Lincoln made sure that ?all intruders were out of the grounds and a strong military guard on duty there and another at the jail to prevent lynching and a reserve between.? As historian Jason Emerson notes, Lincoln?s decisive actions after the attack on Garfield were reminiscent of Secretary of War Edwin Stanton?s on the night Booth shot Abraham Lincoln. However, the memory of his father?s murder sixteen years before haunted him. ??My god,? he said to a New York Times reporter the day after the shooting. ?How many hours of sorrow I have passed in this town.? ... President James A. Garfield died on September 19, 1881, eighty days after being shot. Vice President Chester A. Arthur was sworn in as the 21st President of the United States and traveled to Elberon, New Jersey, where Garfield died, to escort his predecessor?s body back to the capital. After Garfield?s late September funeral and once Congress convened in December 1881, Arthur kept only one cabinet officer appointed by Garfield: Robert Todd Lincoln, who served as Secretary of War until the end of the Arthur presidency.? --- James A. Garfield National Historic Site, Mentor, Ohio. Robert Todd Lincoln was at the Petersen House where his father was taken after he was shot, consoling his mother on the night of April 14-15, 1865. On the evening of September 6,1901, Lincoln, then president of the Pullman Palace Car Company, was with his family on their way to Buffalo to attend the Pan-American Exposition. As their train pulled into the Buffalo station, a Pullman employee was waiting and immediately handed Lincoln a telegram that read: ?President McKinley was shot down by an anarchist in Buffalo this afternoon. He was hit twice in the abdomen. Condition serious.? He immediately went to the home of John Milburn, president of the Pan-Am Expo, where McKinley was taken, and spent a few minutes with the President who would die a week later.

Perrault was born in Quebec City in 1753, the son of fur trader Louis Perrault and grandson of François Perrault, and was brought to Trois-Rivières during the British attack on the town. In 1763, his father returned to Quebec City and left his children with his brother Jacques while he returned to France on business. Joseph-François studied at the Petit Séminaire de Québec. In 1772, he left the province to meet his father in New Orleans. When he arrived, his father was at St Louis, Missouri and they were finally reunited there in the spring of 1773.In 1779, the younger Perrault was captured by native warriors allied with the British and brought to Detroit. There, he met his uncle Jacques Baby, dit Dupéront. Unable to rejoin his father, Perrault began working for his uncle at Montreal. He later entered retail trade on his own, later leaving that business and becoming involved in various other activities, including teaching bookkeeping and translating legal publications. Perrault also became involved in theatre at Montreal with Pierre-Amable de Bonne. In 1795, he was named clerk of the peace and protonotary for the Court of King's Bench at Quebec. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada for Huntingdon County in 1796; he was reelected in 1800. In 1806, he helped establish the Courier de Québec and was also involved in the production of the Le Vrai Canadien at Quebec. Although he was originally a strong supporter of the English party, Perrault became a moderate Reformer later in life; he opposed the use of force to secure political change." Wikipedia.

        BLOOD-MONEY.

San Francisco: F. J. Walker & Co., 1882. - First edition. 8vo. Original green cloth stamped in black, titled in gold gilt and with a pictorial design of bags of money in gold on the front cover, floral decorated endpapers, v [blank], 7-237 pp. The author's first novel, an indictment of the conduct of California railroad companies which were forcing settlers off their land, based on the Mussel Slough Tragedy. This tragedy was a dispute over land titles between settlers and the Southern Pacific Railroad that took place on May 11, 1880 on a farm located 5.6 miles northwest of Hanford, California, in the central San Joaquim Valley, leaving seven people dead. The exact history of the incident has been the source of some disagreement, largely because popular anti-railroad sentiment in the 1880s made the incident to be a clear example of corrupt and cold-blooded corporate greed. Morrow was a San Francisco based author, a mentor and contemporary of Ambrose Bierce, whose stories mostly appeared in Bay area journals, and his tales astounded and fascinated readers in old San Francisco. He is best known for his collection of weird and macabre stories titled THE APE THE IDIOT & OTHER PEOPLE. Very light professional restoration to the spine ends and corners, else a very good copy of a very scarce book. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
