The Chambered Nautilus (longhand) signed 2/8/1881 framed

Boston: self, 1881. First Edition First Printing . Soft cover. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. This is a framed sheet, handwritten, signed and dated by Holmes of the last verse of his 1858 poem The Chambered Nautilus. "Build thee more stately mansions, O my soul, As the swift seasons roll! Leave thy low-vaulted past! Let each new temple, nobler than the last, Shut thee from heaven with a dome more vast, Till thou at length art free, Leaving thine outgrown shell by life's unresting sea! Oliver Wendell Holmes Boston Feb. 8th 1881" The sheet is mildly age darkened, but very clear. It lies on a plain piece of cardboard in an ordinary dark brown frame that to our inexpert eye seems to be from the period. There's some faint damp stain at the corners of the cardboard, but not on Holmes' piece. Holmes must have particularly liked this piece as repeated this action in later years.

Lesky - - First Edition! - Sigmund Exner (1846-1926) identified the superficial tangential fibres of the molecular layer of the cerebral cortex, known eponymically as "Exner's plexus". Also report of agraphia occuring with a lesion in the second convolution of the premotor cortex. McHenry 361 - Garrison & Morton No.1413

A grammar of the Cree language, as spoken by the Cree Indians of North America

London: Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge 12mo (161 mm; 6.375"). viii, 238 pp.. 1881 First edition of one of the first Cree grammars in English. Horden, who began his life as an ironworker, received his calling in 1851 and was sent to Canada with only two weeks notice — during which time he was expected to find a wife. He succeeded in finding both a wife and a fruitful career, eventually becoming the first bishop of Moosonee, diocese of Rupert's Land. Horden's approach here is rooted in descriptive grammar and is expressed in terms of classic Latin-based structure. He urges his language-learning students to begin with his grammar, but to "use the living voice of the Indians as much as possible" as their guide (p. vi). Publisher's green cloth with modest decoration and "Cree Grammar" stamped in black; dark grey discoloration (smoke?) to spine and adjoining one inch on each cover. Text block edges darkened, discoloration to endpapers, fly-leaves, and occasionally another page, with a slim crescent of grey to top of title page. Otherwise, occasional foxing only and a good, sound copy.

        Plataea Flavipes; Gould (Yellow-Legged Spoonbill)

This splendid hand-colored,folio size lithograph Platalea Flavipes: Gould, from John Gould?s (1804-1881) monumental book "Birds of Australia" is in very good condition with light foxing and staining throughout. Measuring 22" x 15", this lithograph magnificently displays the author?s scientific skill and attention to detail. Commonly called the Yellow-Legged or Yellow-Billed Spoonbill, these tall wading birds are expertly hand-colored in vibrant white with black accenting feathers and yellow bills and legs. The Yellow-Legged Spoonbills are finely detailed from each feather on their bodies to their spatulate bills, used for collecting food in the shallow waters they live in.At the time "Birds of Australia's" publication, the birds of this region were essentially unknown to a European audience and as Gould himself admitted in the preface to the book, ?the field was comparatively a new one?. John Gould was without question the most prolific ornithological artist of the 19th century, and the only one to rival John James Audubon in ambition and quality. The 19th century was a time of intense fascination with discoveries in natural history, especially regarding knowledge of the wildlife of exotic lands.Gould combined his passion for natural history with outstanding scientific, artistic, and entrepreneurial talents, and embarked on a series of projects that would eventually make him the leading publisher of ornithological illustrations in Victorian Britain. Gould?s unparalleled career spanned five decades, and he produced a monumental series of books of birds throughout the world. The Birds of Australia is John Gould?s largest and most important work. Because he himself spent so much time in the field making his own observations, the text that accompanies the illustrations is by far the most accurate and detailed of all his works. Each of the illustrations is stunningly colored and flawlessly drafted, highlighting the exquisite plumage and elegance of the birds. The colossal work is tremendous throughout, and quite rightly, it is considered Gould?s masterpiece. When Gould began work on the Birds of Australia, the ornithology of that continent was all but unknown in Europe. Gould started his research using specimens available in England, but quickly realized that the supply was far from sufficient. He discarded the work and traveled to Australia to beginhis effort anew on his magnum opus. Arriving in Australia in September 1838, Gould and his wife, Elizabeth, spent the following eighteen months exploring Tasmania and the adjacent islands, South Australia, and New South Wales, and penetrated well into the interior.Over the course of these extensive travels Gould made many of the preliminary drawings that were translated into the remarkable series of 681 lithographs. Gould collected and documented so many new species, more than three hundred, that very few additions have been made since. His voyage to Australia was unsurpassed in the annals of ornithology.

Die Endoskopie der Harnröhre und Blase.

. Dtsch. Chir., Lfg.51. - First Edition. In 1876, Josef Grünfeld of Gyorke/Hungaria, a pioneer of cystoscopy, was the first to successfully catheterize the ureters under vision, using malleable catheters introduced into bladder alongside his glassended endoscope. He also was the first surgeon which observe a bladder tumor by cystoscope (1885). - Murphy, 183 & 351; Kiefer Cat. 251; Nicht bei Benjamin Collection.

Jill spent all the time she could painting or designing and create beautiful embroidered pieces but in those less liberated times she had to juggle her art with the demands of looking after children and running a house.         Seven Years iin South Africa - Travels, Researches, and Hunting Adventures, between the Diamond-Fields and the Zambesi (1872 - 79) - in Two Volumes

Houghton, Mifflin, and Company, Boston, 1881, Hardcover, Book Condition: Very Good, Dust Jacket Condition: No Jacket, 1st EditionThis thrillingly recounted journey, of which this is the first US edition, is in two volumes. The brown waxed cloth covers of both volumes are, for their age, are still vivid. The gold print is bright, the pressed illustrations are unworn and evocative. The covers of both volumes have general wear and marking from use and storage. Volume II is the more marked of the two with storage spotting marks. The corners and edges are worn but not significantly so. The back covers are principally storage rubbed. The spines of both volumes are worn at the head and foot. The head of the spines have wear from pulling. Both have handling wear - but the printing is clear and strong. The bindings are muscular and strong. The frontispage of volume 1 is unmarked. That of volume 2 has damp staining. The end papers of both volumes have shallow cracks in the spine seams through to the binding stitching. In volume 2 there is a small half-circle open tear to the bottom end page towards the spine edge. The front pages of volume 1 are in very good condition. In volume 2 has a long crack along the spine seam. The frontis illustration page is loosened at the foot. The thin protective page has earned its keep and the condition thereon is good. In volume one the map is torn but complete. Volume 2 is the more handled of the two and has handling marking throughout. However, this adventurous, breathlessly boys-own like story is in very good condition. All pages and illustration plates are complete, intact and firmly attached to the bindings. The illustrations are courageous in their description and are a delight. The text in both volumes is clear, very readable and clean. fk Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 500 grams.         Kelly Reward Board. Report of the Board appointed to enquire into and report upon the proper mode of distributing the rewards offered for the capture of the Kelly Gang

Melbourne: Robert S. Brain, Government Printer, 1881. Tall folio, vi pp. (last blank) followed by the Minutes of Evidence (comprising titling leaf and 12 pp., last blank), cloth tape to spine edge, else fine. Aboriginal trackers acknowledged for Kelly gang capture. Following the brazen robbery of £2,141 from the Bank of New South Wales in Jerilderie by the Kelly Gang disguised as local constabulary, authorities raised the bounty to £2,000 per head (bringing the grand total to a staggering £8,000 for all four members of the Gang). After the spectacular gunfight and fire at Glenrowan a Board of Enquiry was established to determine the distribution of the £8,000 reward based upon the respective merit and bravery of the applicants. Clearly there was no shortage of claimants - indeed the report lists 24 persons deemed ineligible and unable to participate in the reward. This is followed by the long list of recipients with their names, occupations and the sum to be paid as reward. It is headed by Superintendent Francis Hare who was awarded £800 for 'The great energy he displayed, the risk he ran, and the serious, and unfortunately, permanent injury he has sustained...' Most of the recipients are constables, although eight men who manned the train carrying police to Glenrowan are generously acknowledged with rewards of £68 to £104 each.Of particular interest are the six Aboriginal trackers included in the list named Hero, Johnny, Jimmy, Jacky, Barny, Moses and Spider respectively. Each is awarded £50 although the preamble notes 'In dealing with the claims of the Queensland and Victorian native trackers, the Board has not intended in any way to deprecate their services, but they feel that it would not be desirable to place any considerable sum of money in the hands of persons unable to use it; and therefore recommend that the sums set opposite to their names be handed to the Queensland and Victorian Governments to be dealt with at their discretion.'Furthermore, the report lists men entitled to special recognition for their bravery and assistance to the police in apprehending the Kelly Gang. It is followed by the Minutes of Evidence comprising testimonies from George Vesey Allen, John McWhirter, Joseph Dalgarno Melvin and others.

Autograph Manuscript of Place de la Bastille, Paris

[c.1881]. Very Good. A very nice handwritten copy of this fine early poem by Rossetti. He wrote the sonnet on his trip to the continent with Holman Hunt in the autumn of 1849. This manuscript is undated, but it is possibly a draft of the final poem. It uses wording which was changed in the final version of the poem as published in Ballads and Sonnets in 1881 and the Collected Works in 1887. In the published collections, Rossetti writes in line twelve..."was blown abroad on gospel-tongues of flame." In this handwritten copy he writes "was blown abroad upon swift tongues of flame." It is known that Rossetti often wrote out slightly differing versions of his sonnets. Written on one side of a 4 3/4 x 7 1/8 piece of paper torn from a larger sheet, which has an embossed stamp at lower left edge that reads "best quality." Mounted on sheet of archival paper and protected by acetate. In very good condition. AUTO/102814.
