CRONACA BIZANTINA Periodico letterario, sociale, artistico. Si pubblica due volte al mese.

Roma, Angelo Sommaruga, 1881-1885.

Rare book from the Library of James A. Garfield and used by him as President ? his personal copy of the 1881 ?Manual for the Use of the Legislature of the State of New York?

"Protesting a Garfield appointment in their state, U.S. Senators Conkling and Platt resigned on May 16, 1881, and then sought reelection by the Republican majority in the N.Y. State Legislature to show their strong party support at home. The first Presidential memorial library, completed at the Lawnfield estate in Ohio by the widow of James Garfield four years after his assassination, houses almost 3,000 books that were used and treasured by the 20th president. Both James Garfield and his wife Lucretia were voracious readers and amassed a large collection of books. Some twenty years ago, several dozen of their books were de-accessioned, and one of these books is described below:Book ?Manual for the Use of the Legislature of the State of New York. 1881. Prepared pursuant to a Resolution of the Senate and Assembly of 1865, by Joseph B. Carr, Secretary of State,? 588 pages, 4? x 6.25?. Albany: Weed, Parsons and Company, 1881. Bound in red cloth with a double-line gilt rectangle at perimeters of covers. Gilt lettered on cover: ""President Garfield. / Compliments of / Joseph B. Carr / Secretary of State.? Spine professionally reconstructed and attached to the covers; five raised bands on spine, gilt-lettered in three compartments: ?Manual for / Legislature / Joseph B. Carr / 1881.? Fold-out diagrams of the New York State Senate Chamber (9.75? x 12?) and the New York State Assembly Chamber (11? x 12?) affixed to first free-endpaper. The name of each member and his seat location is on each diagram, as well as the officers and newspaper reporters. Garfield?s 2.5? x 1.25? bookplate ?Library of / James A. Garfield. / Inter Folia Fructus.? affixed inside front cover. Very good condition. The State Legislature convened in Albany on January 3, 1881. One of its first actions took place on January 13th when a joint caucus of the Republicans in the Senate and the Assembly nominated Thomas C. Platt of Tioga County as the Republican candidate for U.S. Senate. Elected to the United States Senate by the Republican-controlled state legislature, Platt served from March 4, 1881, to May 16, 1881, when he resigned because of a disagreement with President James A. Garfield, also a Republican, over federal appointments in New York. His Republican colleague Roscoe Conkling, who had represented New York in the U.S. Senate since 1867, also resigned in protest. Thinking they had the support of their party in the New York state legislature, Platt and Conkling announced their candidacy to succeed themselves. Undoubtedly, Garfield used this book listing the members of the state legislature who would elect the new U.S. Senator. After President Garfield was shot on July 2nd, ?The New York Times? reported that ?Mr. Conkling feared that some of his enemies would work up the impression that his resignation as a United States Senator and the subsequent events had precipitated the assault upon President Garfield.? When Charles Guiteau shot Garfield, he proclaimed, ?I am a Stalwart! Arthur is now President of the United States!? Conkling was the leader of the Stalwart wing of the New York Republican party which had successfully placed Stalwart Chester Arthur on the 1880 Republican ticket. In late July, the New York State Legislature elected two incumbent Republican Congressmen to replace Platt and Conkling. After the beloved President died on September 19th, Conkling refused to reenter politics. ?How can I speak into a grave? How can I battle with a shroud?? he asked. ?Silence is a duty and a doom.? In 1882, President Arthur nominated and the U.S. Senate confirmed Roscoe Conkling as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. Conkling, who had resumed his New York law practice, declined. ?The New York Times? suggested that his reasons were twofold: the salary was too low and there was no patronage."

UNCLE REMUS His Songs and His Sayings the Folk-Lore of the Old Plantation

New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1881. First edition. Near Fine. First printing with "presumptive" on page 9 and the correct ads in the back. (BAL 7100) A lovely, Near Fine copy of the book with bright gilt and clean boards. Light rubbing at the spine ends, minor separation within the page block and a short 1/4 inch tear at the inner margin of the title page. A total of eight plates, including the frontis, with several other illustrations within the text. First published in 1881, Uncle Remus was a landmark collection of African American fables and oral tradition that was adapted and edited by Joel Chandler Harris. The work includes 185 tales, which are woven together through the character of Uncle Remus, an older ex-slave who tells the stories to a group of children. The stories were actually written in dialect and many of them center around the character of Br'er (Brother) Rabbit, a kind of clever trickster. Read widely, the book was extremely popular as many people had not been exposed to the tales, lifestyles, and ways of speaking that book depicted. Mark Twain himself was a fun: "...in the matter of writing [the African-American dialect], he is the only master the country has produced." Despite its acclaim, the book has been somewhat controversial, with some questioning Harris' role in shaping the stories themselves. "But it is not merely as a collection of folk- lore that this book deserves notice. It is a valuable study of dialect..." (Contemporary review in The Dial). On both the Grolier Club's and Merle Johnson's lists for most important works of American literature. Near Fine.

Florae Fluminensis seu Descriptionum Plantarum Praefectura Fluminensi Sponte Nascentium liber primus ad systema sexuale concinnatus

Flumine Januario / Rio de Janeiro: Typ. Economica, 1881. First complete edition. Cloth. A very good copy, rear board rubbed, edges foxed, binder's stamp and bookplate of Glasgow Archaeological Society on front pastedown. 4to. Published in Archivos do Museu Nacional do Rio De Janeiro. Volume V. 1880. Added title page: Petro nomine ac imperio primo Brasiliensis imperii perpetuo defensore ... jubente, Flora fluminensis a' fr. Josepho Mariano a Conceptione Vellozo Ordinis monorum collecta, descripta, et elaborata anno M.D. CC. XC. Ex M.S. cod. Imperialis bibliothecæ eruta nunc primo etitur. Flumine Januario, A.D.M. DCCC. XXV, imperii IV. José Xavier Veloso (1742-1811), born in what is now Minas Gerais, Brazil, was ordained in 1766 in the convent of St. Anthony in Rio de Janeiro, where he studied philosophy and theology, later Geometry in San Paulo, and finally natural history. He collected plants, animals, and minerals in the Rio de Janeiro area from 1783 to 1790 at which time he moved to Lisbon where he worked at the Royal Academy of Sciences while preparing Florae Fluminensis, his greatest work, for publication. Using the Linnaeus? system of sexual classification of plants, he prepared very highly detailed texts and 1700 prints, many of them of new species. But the publication of the work was beset by problems. First sent to Venice, the plates were never completed. Later the French invasion of the Iberian peninsular, sent the Portuguese government, then Veloso and his manuscripts, into exile in Brazil, where he died in 1811. In 1825 an abbreviated version of the text was published, followed by the eleven volumes of the Icones in 1827, of which few copies survive. The complete text was not published until this edition in 1881. Rodrigues 2473. Sabin 98833n. For the shorter version of 1825 see: Barba de Moraes II, p. 343. Pritzel 468. Jackson 377.         THE OUTLAW BROTHERS, FRANK AND JESSE JAMES. LIVES AND ADVENTURES OF THE SCOURGES OF THE PLAINS

Published by Richard K. Fox, Proprietor Police Gazette, [1881]., 1881. 8vo. Pictorial yellow and black wrappers, [5], 67 pp. plus 7 pages of advertisements, frontispiece. Top of front panel says "Fifth Edition" and shows a picture of a hanged man, inside front cover and inside rear and back cover are advertisements. This is a rare item and we have only seen two other copies in the past years that state "Second Edition" at the top of the front cover. It has been said that this booklet was printed in a small quantity and as they sold and more were needed the publisher printed them as if sales were so good that another edition was needed. We don't know what actually was the reasoning, but this copy matches identically with all bibliographical sources. Six Guns 542 says "Rare." "Another example of the Police Gazette's historically worthless outlaw series, which have now become rare collector's items." Light wear to the spine ends, and moderate wear to the edges, else a very good copy housed in a quarter leather and cloth clamshell case with raised bands on the spine and titles stamped in gold gilt on the spine.

The Chambered Nautilus (longhand) signed 2/8/1881 framed

Boston: self, 1881. First Edition First Printing . Soft cover. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. This is a framed sheet, handwritten, signed and dated by Holmes of the last verse of his 1858 poem The Chambered Nautilus. "Build thee more stately mansions, O my soul, As the swift seasons roll! Leave thy low-vaulted past! Let each new temple, nobler than the last, Shut thee from heaven with a dome more vast, Till thou at length art free, Leaving thine outgrown shell by life's unresting sea! Oliver Wendell Holmes Boston Feb. 8th 1881" The sheet is mildly age darkened, but very clear. It lies on a plain piece of cardboard in an ordinary dark brown frame that to our inexpert eye seems to be from the period. There's some faint damp stain at the corners of the cardboard, but not on Holmes' piece. Holmes must have particularly liked this piece as repeated this action in later years.

Lesky - - First Edition! - Sigmund Exner (1846-1926) identified the superficial tangential fibres of the molecular layer of the cerebral cortex, known eponymically as "Exner's plexus". Also report of agraphia occuring with a lesion in the second convolution of the premotor cortex. McHenry 361 - Garrison & Morton No.1413

A grammar of the Cree language, as spoken by the Cree Indians of North America

London: Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge 12mo (161 mm; 6.375"). viii, 238 pp.. 1881 First edition of one of the first Cree grammars in English. Horden, who began his life as an ironworker, received his calling in 1851 and was sent to Canada with only two weeks notice — during which time he was expected to find a wife. He succeeded in finding both a wife and a fruitful career, eventually becoming the first bishop of Moosonee, diocese of Rupert's Land. Horden's approach here is rooted in descriptive grammar and is expressed in terms of classic Latin-based structure. He urges his language-learning students to begin with his grammar, but to "use the living voice of the Indians as much as possible" as their guide (p. vi). Publisher's green cloth with modest decoration and "Cree Grammar" stamped in black; dark grey discoloration (smoke?) to spine and adjoining one inch on each cover. Text block edges darkened, discoloration to endpapers, fly-leaves, and occasionally another page, with a slim crescent of grey to top of title page. Otherwise, occasional foxing only and a good, sound copy.

        Plataea Flavipes; Gould (Yellow-Legged Spoonbill)

This splendid hand-colored,folio size lithograph Platalea Flavipes: Gould, from John Gould?s (1804-1881) monumental book "Birds of Australia" is in very good condition with light foxing and staining throughout. Measuring 22" x 15", this lithograph magnificently displays the author?s scientific skill and attention to detail. Commonly called the Yellow-Legged or Yellow-Billed Spoonbill, these tall wading birds are expertly hand-colored in vibrant white with black accenting feathers and yellow bills and legs. The Yellow-Legged Spoonbills are finely detailed from each feather on their bodies to their spatulate bills, used for collecting food in the shallow waters they live in.At the time "Birds of Australia's" publication, the birds of this region were essentially unknown to a European audience and as Gould himself admitted in the preface to the book, ?the field was comparatively a new one?. John Gould was without question the most prolific ornithological artist of the 19th century, and the only one to rival John James Audubon in ambition and quality. The 19th century was a time of intense fascination with discoveries in natural history, especially regarding knowledge of the wildlife of exotic lands.Gould combined his passion for natural history with outstanding scientific, artistic, and entrepreneurial talents, and embarked on a series of projects that would eventually make him the leading publisher of ornithological illustrations in Victorian Britain. Gould?s unparalleled career spanned five decades, and he produced a monumental series of books of birds throughout the world. The Birds of Australia is John Gould?s largest and most important work. Because he himself spent so much time in the field making his own observations, the text that accompanies the illustrations is by far the most accurate and detailed of all his works. Each of the illustrations is stunningly colored and flawlessly drafted, highlighting the exquisite plumage and elegance of the birds. The colossal work is tremendous throughout, and quite rightly, it is considered Gould?s masterpiece. When Gould began work on the Birds of Australia, the ornithology of that continent was all but unknown in Europe. Gould started his research using specimens available in England, but quickly realized that the supply was far from sufficient. He discarded the work and traveled to Australia to beginhis effort anew on his magnum opus. Arriving in Australia in September 1838, Gould and his wife, Elizabeth, spent the following eighteen months exploring Tasmania and the adjacent islands, South Australia, and New South Wales, and penetrated well into the interior.Over the course of these extensive travels Gould made many of the preliminary drawings that were translated into the remarkable series of 681 lithographs. Gould collected and documented so many new species, more than three hundred, that very few additions have been made since. His voyage to Australia was unsurpassed in the annals of ornithology.

Die Endoskopie der Harnröhre und Blase.

. Dtsch. Chir., Lfg.51. - First Edition. In 1876, Josef Grünfeld of Gyorke/Hungaria, a pioneer of cystoscopy, was the first to successfully catheterize the ureters under vision, using malleable catheters introduced into bladder alongside his glassended endoscope. He also was the first surgeon which observe a bladder tumor by cystoscope (1885). - Murphy, 183 & 351; Kiefer Cat. 251; Nicht bei Benjamin Collection.

In volume 2 there is a small half-circle open tear to the bottom end page towards the spine edge. The front pages of volume 1 are in very good condition. In volume 2 has a long crack along the spine seam. The frontis illustration page is loosened at the foot. The thin protective page has earned its keep and the condition thereon is good. In volume one the map is torn but complete. Volume 2 is the more handled of the two and has handling marking throughout. However, this adventurous, breathlessly boys-own like story is in very good condition. All pages and illustration plates are complete, intact and firmly attached to the bindings. The illustrations are courageous in their description and are a delight. The text in both volumes is clear, very readable and clean. fk Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 500 grams.
