        Lusiads, Lyricks

1880. First Edition . Signed. CAMOENS, Luis Vaz de. Os Lusiadas [The Lusiads]. Two volumes. WITH: Camoens: His Life and His Lusiads. Two volumes. WITH: The Lyricks. Two volumes. London: Bernard Quaritch, 1880, 1881, 1884. Six volumes in all. Small octavo, original gilt-stamped green cloth, uncut. $4800.First edition set of Richard Burton’s translations of Camoens, with commentary volumes, inscribed by Burton in Volume I of the Lusiads, “With the Author’s very best wishes, [in Arabic] Peace, Abdullah.” Sets containing all six volumes are very scarce, and presentation inscriptions by Burton are extraordinarily scarce.First published in 1572, The Lusiads describes Vasco da Gama’s 1498 discovery of the sea route around Africa to India, the very same route Camoens would take in 1553, when he was sent to India as a soldier. “Burton was attracted to Camoens as the mouthpiece of the romantic period of discovery in the Indian Ocean. The voyages, the misfortunes, the chivalry, the patriotism of the poet were to him those of a brother adventurer. In his spirited sketch of the life and character of Camoens it is not presumptuous to read between the lines allusions to his own career… Burton’s aim was to present to modern English readers as much as might be of the influence that Camoens has exercised for three centuries upon the Portuguese… What to the unimaginative may seem nothing but a tour de force is in truth the highest manifestation of the translator’s art” (DNB). Burton’s translation “is absolutely wonderful… the Portuguese nation owes Burton a very considerable debt for making known to the English the works of their greatest poet. Burton put his soul into ‘Camoens’ chiefly because he so thoroughly sympathized with his hero. There was much in common between the two, both were great patriots who had been neglected by their country, both endured the bitterest disappointments without a murmur, both had suffered much in foreign lands. When a man knows a language thoroughly as Burton did Portuguese, and can add to it a sympathy with his hero, such as in this case, the qualifications for a perfect translator are practically complete” (Penzer, 15). Biographer Edward Rice notes that Burton’s “later handwriting changed into near illegibility,” a statement certainly true of the cramped hand of the inscription in Volume I of the present copy (Rice, 117). While operating undercover as a Pathan doctor, “the name that he took was Al-Haj (the pilgrim) Abdullah, as he used ever afterwards to sign himself in Arabic characters,” as here (DNB). Penzer, 103-106. Bookbinder tickets; armorial bookplates in Volumes III and IV (Life).Light rubbing and soiling to publisher’s cloth bindings, a few inner hinges repaired. Near-fine condition.

Large folio (15-1/2 by 22-1/2 inches), original half green cloth, original green printed boards. $22,000.First edition of this lovely Gould monograph, with ten beautiful hand-colored plates, in original printed boards as issued. The Pittidae is a family of brilliantly colored and thrush-like insectivorous birds, mostly limited to the subtropical and tropical forests of Asia, Indonesia and Australia. ""In the field of natural history the accomplishments of this man [John Gould] are truly monumental. No other ornithologist has ever exceeded (or will ever exceed) the number of Gould's bird discoveries and the magnitude and splendor of his folio publications"" (Sauer, John Gould, the Bird Man, xv). ""Lithography which introduced a greater freedom of line and softer tones than had hitherto been known was ideally suited as a medium for bird pictures, the finished prints resembling watercolors with the birds set in their natural habitats often amongst plants and flowers. Gould was meticulous about accuracy both in design and coloring"" (Nissen, IVB 381). ""The 10 hand-colored lithographs are mostly taken from the Birds of Asia, Birds of Australia, and Birds of New Guinea"" (Sitwell, 102). Originally projected for completion in four parts, the Pittidae was abandoned after Gould's death. No title page or preliminary letterpress was issued; the title is taken from the front cover.         Philips' New Series of Travelling Maps. Tasmania and New Guinea with Index.

London & Liverpool: George Philip & Son, circa, 1880. Folding map measuring 540 x 720 mm., printed in colour on original linen backing, 24 pp. index, a few marks and flecks; very good in original brown cloth case lettered in black and gilt, cloth case a bit stained and rubbed. Another well-preserved mid-nineteenth century travellers' map, this example with fine maps of Tasmania and, unusually, New Guinea, rich in detail with settlements both small and large, landscape features and new railway lines marked for the use of emigrants to Australia. The map is entirely as issued, housed within the publishers folding cloth case with an index of place names and co-ordinates to the inner flap of the front cover. In Printed Maps of Tasmania Tooley notes two maps titled Van Diemen's Land, but does not list this folding map titled 'Tasmania and New Guinea'. The colony was officially known as Tasmania from January of 1856, indicating the map was issued after this date; furthermore, the publisher's details list Philip's address at Fleet Street, premises occupied from 1856 onwards. The presence of the railway lines, notably the line from Hobart to Launceston, would effectively confirm a date sometime in the 1880s. This is further confirmed by the naming of "Emperor William's Land" on the north coast of New Guinea.

Salamanca, Antonio Ramires, 1609. 4to (19 x 14.5) . With a woodcut illustration of a man carrying Saint Francis across the Ganges River in India on the title-page and a woodcut centaur below the colophon. Vellum (ca. 1880).

      - Huth library (1880), p. 1523 (this copy); cf. Barbosa Machado, Bibliotheca Lusitana, I (1741), pp. 154-155 (the other 1609 Spanish ed.); not in KVK/WorldCat. The only known copy of what appears to be the first edition, in the original Spanish, of a legend of the miraculous appearance of Saint Francis of Assisi (ca. 1181/82-1226) in India, taken from a manuscript account by Andrés de Santa Maria in Goa, who was Bishop of Cochin from 1588 to 1615. The text gives an account of a miracle Saint Francis is said to have worked in Islamic Bengal. Although Saint Francis's travels never took him further east than Egypt and the Holy Land, he did succeed in improving Christian-Islamic relations soon after the Islamic conquest of Bengal. The present story was apparently related by a Bengali man said to be 380 years old. The man had been an Islamic beggar and was talking to a friend on the bank of the Ganges River when a Christian monk appeared and asked for help crossing the Ganges. The man picked up the monk in his arms and carried him across the holy river. On the other bank the monk revealed himself as Saint Francis of Assisi and rewarded the man with youth, good health, black hair and a good character to the end of his days. There are two Spanish editions, both published in Salamanca and dated 1609, each known only from a single surviving copy, but the order of their publication remains uncertain. From the library of one of the greatest collectors of all time, Henry Huth (1815-1878). In fine condition and with generous margins. Only known copy, preserving the original Spanish text of a legend of Saint Francis in India.

Fine unsigned Woodburytype Portrait Photograph, by Lock and Whitfield, (Charles, 1809-1882, Naturalist, Writer of 'The Origin of Species')]

1880 - showing him head and shoulders, three quarter face, with his full beard, oval 4½" x 3½" on mount 10¾" x 8", no place, no date, circa The term Woodburytype refers to both a photomechanical process and the print produced by this process. The process produces continuous tone images in slight relief. A chromated gelatin film is exposed under a photographic negative, which hardens in proportion to the amount of light. Then it is developed in hot water to remove all the unexposed gelatin and dried. This relief is pressed into a sheet of lead in a press with 5000 psi. This is an intaglio plate. It is used as a mold and is filled with pigmented gelatin. The gelatin layer is then pressed onto a paper support. It is thought to produce the finest photographic images. The Woodburytype was developed by Walter B. Woodbury in 1864, first used in a publication in 1866 and widely used for fine book illustration from about 1870 to 1900.

Punch and Judy is a traditional, popular, and usually rather violent puppet show featuring Pulcinella or La Polichinelle (Mr. Punch) and his wife Judy. The performance consists of a sequence of short scenes, each depicting an interaction between two characters, most typically Mr. Punch and one other character (who usually falls victim to Mr. Punch's club). It is often associated with traditional British seaside culture. The various episodes of Punch and Judy are performed in the spirit of outrageous comedy - often provoking shocked laughter - and are dominated by the clowning of Mr. Punch. The show is performed by a single puppeteer inside the booth, known since Victorian times as a "professor" or "punchman", and assisted sometimes by a "bottler" who corrals the audience outside the booth, introduces the performance, and collects the money ("the bottle"). The bottler might also play accompanying music or sound effects on a drum or guitar, and engage in back chat with the puppets, sometimes repeating lines that may have been difficult for the audience to understand. In Victorian times, the drum and pan pipes were the instruments of choice. Today, the audience is also encouraged to participate, calling out to the characters on the stage to warn them of danger or clue them in to what is going on behind their backs. Also nowadays, most professors work solo, since the need for a bottler became less important when busking with the show gave way to paid engagements at private parties or public events.

Montpellier , Coulet, Paris, Delahaye, 1880. ____ Première édition. DSB 12, 45 : "Sabatier also compared the thoracic and pelvic girdles in the vertebrate series. He based this comparison on muscle insertions, which appear to be similair along the vertebrate series and to exhibit a certain similary among bony structures. This work resolved several lengthy debates, including that on the significance in man of the coracoid process. He demonstrated that this structure is analogous to the pubis of the pelvic girdle." Armand Sabatier était professeur de zoologie à l'Université de Montpellier. Rare tiré à part des Mémoires de l'Académie des sciences et lettres de Montpellier. Illustré par 9 planches hors-texte en lithographie. Provenance : "L. Galavielle, Prix Tempié 1889". (Inscription doré en bas du dos). Couleur du dos un peu passée. Bon exemplaire. *****. In-4.         Cassell's Popular Natural History.

London: Cassell, Petter, Galpin, circa, 1880. Four volumes in two, large octavo; contemporary half green morocco. This is a beautifully, if somewhat romantically, illustrated overview of the animal kingdom, using an idiosyncratic taxonomical system. The coloured plates include Adam naming the animals, a pastoral scene overflowing with rabbits and hares and a boudoir scene redolent of angora cats. Pictures of battling animals abound, interspersed with engravings of dissected creatures and skeletons used for comparative purposes - including the head of a chimpanzee compared to the regal bust of a Greek philosopher! This "everyman encyclopedia" also includes a section on Australian animals. A good copy.
