PHOTO ALBUM WITH 76 FINE PHOTOGRAPHIC VIEWS. PARIS. Circa 1880-1890.

In horizontal folio (26x36 cm) with 38 cardboard folios containing 76 photos (black and white albumen) with 20.5x27.5 cm. Contemporary editor?s percaline binding, with leather corners and repaired spine. The front board has a blind tool with the word ?Paris? Contains photos of Paris, Bois de Boulogne, Parc de St. Cloud, Palais de Versailles, and Parc de Versailles, all of them originally identified with the number of the cliché of the original negative. Professional album of an anonymous author, with images of several important historical and architectural places in Paris. The overviews were taken from above, showing the skyline of the city, like, for instance, Les Septs Ponts viewed from St. Germain; La Cité viewed from the Louvre; etc. Other photos show the traffic and the daily buzz of the city of Paris in the intersections of its avenues with the boulevards, like the Boulevard de la Madelaine and the intersection of the Boulevard des Capucins near the Opera. The avenues show the traffic of private and public transportation, like the carriages stops and terminals, and the horse carriages, among which the Imperial Omnibus service, with two floors, typical of the time, and that usually served between Passy-Bourse, Place Wagram-Bastille and Place Maine-Gare du Nord, Madeleine-Bastille, among other destinations, like is shown in some of the photos. We also point out the historical importance of these photos, since they are snapshots of the daily life in Paris, showing its inhabitants doing their daily tasks, wit

[COLLECTION OF SEVEN LATER 19th-CENTURY CABINET CARDS AND ONE STEREOVIEW OF SAN ANTONIO PRODUCED BY FRANK HARDESTY AND THE SAN ANTONIO VIEW COMPANY]

San Antonio, 1880. Seven albumen photographs, most 4 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches, plus one stereoview, measuring approximately 3 3/4 x 6 1/4 inches. Mounted on card. Cards with some edge wear, one more heavily chipped. Some light dampstaining and other marks affecting several images. Good plus. An assemblage of eight attractive images of San Antonio, consisting of seven large cabinet cards and one stereoview, produced during the 1880s by professional photographer Frank Hardesty. Hardesty operated the San Antonio View Company, which published a series of stereoviews of the city by several photographers, including Hardesty himself, H.A. Doerr, and H.L. Bingham, and is most well known for his photographs of Geronimo when he was being held at Fort Sam Houston. There is one stereocard example in this collection, depicting two street vendors, a Mexican and a younger white boy. The cabinet cards consist of larger single versions of the images used for the stereoviews. The photographs include images of a partially completed San Fernando Cathedral, the Missions of San José and Concepción, the Government Tower, San Pedro Park, as well as photographs of two wagons fording the San Antonio River underneath a railroad and of an older woman preparing food. Very interesting and scarce images of later 19th-century San Antonio.

A DICTIONARY OF THE OTCHIPWE LANGUAGE, EXPLAINED IN ENGLISH. PART I. ENGLISH-OTCHIPWE. A new edition, by a missionary of the Oblates. [bound with:] A DICTIONARY OF THE OTCHIPWE LANGUAGE, EXPLAINED IN ENGLISH. PART II. OTCHIPWE-ENGLISH. A new edition, by a missionary of the Oblates

Montreal, 1880. Two volumes bound in one. [6],301,[1]; viii,422pp. printed in double columns. Contemporary three-quarter calf and cloth covered boards, spine gilt. Spine rubbed and worn, with a crack along upper portion of rear joint. Hinges reinforced. Slight stain along top edge, not affecting text. Very good. Baraga's lexicographical masterpiece, still the preferred reference work on the subject. Here the two volumes, published separately, have been bound together. It was among the Indians of Michigan and the adjacent areas that Father Frederic Baraga served as a missionary beginning in 1831. Though in 1853 he was consecrated bishop of Upper Michigan, he continued his hands-on work among the natives until his death in 1868, making a study of the Chippewa (a.k.a. Ojibwa) language and producing, in addition to this dictionary, a grammar, a catechism, a volume of sermons, and a volume of devotional meditations. Pilling ALGONQUIAN calls Baraga's dictionary, coupled with his Ojibwa grammar, "perhaps the most important contribution to Indian philology made hitherto." AYER INDIAN LINGUISTICS (CHIPPEWA) 6. PILLING, ALGONQUIAN, p.28. PILLING, PROOF-SHEETS 250, 251.

Each of the mounted photographs is enclosed with a decorative ink border, and hand-lettered caption showing the individual's name and office. Among these are: Benjamin B. Smith, Bishop of Kentucky, 1832--; John Williams, Bishop of Connecticut, 1851--; Horatio Potter, Bishop of New York, 1854--; William H. Odenheimer, Bishop of New Jersey, 1859-1879; Alfred Lee, Bishop of Delaware, 1841--; William B. Stevens, Bishop of Pennsylvania, 1862--; Joseph C. Talbot, Bishop of Indiana, 1860--; Daniel S. Most are shown in full-length images, and all are in clerical garb. The album itself bears a London stationer's label on the rear pastedown, and is less than half full, despite the "Vol. 1" on the cover. It would be interesting to know the genesis of this effort, which was obviously undertaken with much thought and care.

Terrestrial table globe - Jan Felkl, c. 1880.

SMALL TERRESTRIAL TABLE GLOBE WITH STANLEY?S NEW DISCOVERIES IN THE CONGO?Aardglobe naar de Nieuwste Bronnen bewerkt door W.J. Geerling. Fabriek van J. Felkl. te Praag?, small (16 cm) terrestrial globe with 12 gores produced in Prague by Jan Felkl c. 1880. Lithographed in black and two shades of blue, with Asia, Australia, the Americas and parts of Antarctica outlined in red. With a brass meridian ring graduated in degrees and a brass pointer at the north pole (dial lacking), in a contemporary four-legged wooden base with central support, the horizon ring with a facsimile of a contemporary paper horizon ring pasted on it.A charming little globe, produced in Prague for the Dutch market by Jan Felkl (1817-1887) with the assistance of W.J. Geerling of Arnhem. Schools formed a large part of Felkl?s market, though the globes sold to schools are not distinguished from those sold to others. Since Felkl left Prague for Rostok in 1870 and traded as Felkl & Sohn from 1875, the plates for the present globe must have been made no later than 1870. Africa shows the results of Henry Morton Stanley?s exploration of the Congo in the years 1874 to 1877, so the plates must have been updated. It depicts the upper Congo accurately, reduces the old elongated Lake Albert to its proper extent and perhaps attempts to depict what are now lakes Edward and George. The presence of Transvaal Republic in South Africa suggests a date before its annexation by England in 1881.Condition: professional repair of a 1 cm hole in the Atlantic Ocean, east of West Indies, and a few minor scuffs, but still in good condition overall. A nice little globe from the famous firm of Felkl in Prague.Price: ?3.000,-.
