        Egypt: Descriptive, Historical and Picturesque

London, Paris and New York: Cassell, Petter and Gilpin, 1880. First edition of this monumental work on Egyptology. Folio, 2 volumes, pictorial brown cloth, gilt tooling and stamping to the spine and front panels, bevelled boards, all edges gilt. Illustrated with full-page plates. Very lightly rubbed; corners bumped. Translated from the German by Clara Bell. With an introduction and notes by S. Birch. An exceptional example, uncommon in this condition. Professor of Egyptology at Leipzig, Georg Ebers wrote histories and romantic novels relating to Egypt and was one of a handful of men who promoted and popularized its rediscovered ancient wonders. This work, handsomely illustrated with full-page wood-engraved plates and in-text vignettes of temples, pyramids, hieroglyphs and scenes along the Nile, is part history, part travelogue, and provides a fascinating view of Egypt in the late 19th century. The fine wood-engravings are by prominent contemporary artists, chief among them Lawrence Alma Tadema, "the most prolific and skilled of all who worked in [Egyptology]--'the painter of the Victorian vision of the ancient world" (Clayton, Rediscovery of Ancient Egypt, 178).

Across the Zodiac: The Story of a Wrecked Record Deciphered, Translated and Edited by . .

London: Trübner & Co., 1880, 1880. First edition. Locke, Spectrum of Fantasy, page 96; not in Wolff, who had but one novel by Greg. Hinges and spine skillfully repaired; very good copy. Rare.. 2 vols, 8vo, original brown cloth, gilt lettering. A major work of Victorian science fiction, the story of "a flight, in a huge spacecraft powered by a force called apergy, to Mars, which is found to be populated by a scientifically advanced people" - Locke. The story purports to be a translation of a manuscript in Latin, which is discovered by a former Colonel in the Confederate army, after he is shipwrecked on an unknown island in the South Pacific. Percy Greg (1836-1889) was a journalist from Manchester, who had an interest in American history, particularly the Civil War; hence the Confederate character in an English novel of science fiction. He wrote several other novels and was a prolific contributor to Blackwood's, the Manchester Guardian, Fraser's, etc. See Allibone, Supplement, and the ODNB.

[PHOTOGRAPHIC PANORAMA] Brisbane from Observatory in 4 pieces.

[Title from contemporary inscription verso]. Brisbane : Imperial Photographic Company, [c.1880]. Photographic panorama comprised of four contiguous albumen prints, each 250 x 280 mm, versos with wet stamp of 'Imperial Photo. Coy. Brisbane' and contemporary sequence numbers 1-4 in pencil, number 3 also inscribed with title 'Brisbane from Observatory in 4 pieces'; the four albumen prints are loose, having never been mounted; each has mild foxing, short edge tears and some creasing; panels 2,3 and 4 also display silverfish damage along the left hand edges; the photographic quality of the prints is exceptional, with beautiful chocolate tones and superb detail. A rare and impressive panorama of Brisbane, complete in four separate panels, as issued by Daniel F. Metcalfe's Imperial Photographic Company. We can locate no other complete example in Australian collections, although copies of individual panels may of course be preserved in contemporary albums of Brisbane views. American-born photographer Daniel F. Metcalfe opened his first Australian studio in Sydney in 1864. When the business failed, he joined the photographic firm of his step-father, Thomas Skelton Glaister. In the late 1860s, in partnership with Robert Millington, he travelled throughout regional New South Wales, ultimately making his way to Brisbane where he established a business in Queen Street from 1870. After brief business partnerships with his half-brother Thomas Skelton Middleton Glaister and William True Bennett, in 1880 D.F. Metcalfe took over the formerly Daniel Marquis-owned Imperial Photographic Company in Queen Street, which he relocated to George Street. A notice placed by Metcalfe in The Telegraph, Brisbane, 6 May 1880, advertising large format photographic prints of the type used in his four-panel panorama of Brisbane from Bowen Terrace, read: 'Wanted. The Public to inspect the Large Direct Pictures now executed by Imperial Photo. Company. Prices from 7s 6d. each; Carte de Visites 7s 6d, and Cabinets, 15s per dozen.'

        Jerusalem.

(Palestine, 1880s). - Oblong album (445 x 315 mm) with 71 large albumen photographic prints, mostly ca. 22 x 28 cm, signed and captioned in the negative (in French and English), mounted on both sides of the album's leaves. Includes a three-part folding panorama of Jerusalem from Mount Olivet, measuring 82 x 21 cms. Ornamental endpapers printed in gilt. Original auburn morocco with gilt upper cover. All edges gilt. A rare and unusually massive Palestine souvenir album containing 71 photographs by the renowned studio of Félix Bonfils (1831-85), the French-born photographer who had come to the Levant with General d'Hautpoul in 1860 and remained active in the East. Based in Beirut, Bonfils produced thousands of photographs depicting Palestine, Egypt, Syria, Greece and other parts of the Ottoman Empire. In the early days of western tourism to the Middle East, his works soon became popular as souvenirs. The photographs were available both separately and as individually arranged albums, but sets of this scope were uncommon, very few exceeding fifty images. The sumptuous binding which the owner chose underlines that this was a luxury souvenir for a more than ordinarily wealthy traveller. It features landscapes and city views, famous sights such as Jaffa Gate (Bab el-Khalil), sites sacred to the three religions (Church of the Holy Sepulchre, Church of the Flagellation, Al-Aqsa Mosque, Mosque of Omar, Wailing Wall), but also sights outside Jerusalem, including Hebron, Bethlehem, the Dead Sea, the River Jordan, Jericho, Wadi el-Kelt, Khan-el-Ahmar, Bethany, Nazareth, and Emmaus. - The photographs occasionally show some insignificant loss of contrast, but are altogether in good condition. A few edge flaws to the cardboard leaves, including a chafe mark across the lower edge where the paper has buckled. Binding in good condition, with occasional scuffing (more obvious on lower cover). A fine album of photographs of Palestine. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Nine photographs of Egypt.

Egypt, [1880s]. - 9 albumen prints (approx. 340 x 260 mm), each mounted on backing cardboard (ca. 400 x 330 mm). Three edges gilt. A fine set of nine albumen images of Egyptian sights and views, including Karnak, ships on the Nile, the Aswan cataract, the Temple of Edfu, murals at the Sanctuary at Karnak, camel drivers on the Sinai, etc. Pascal Sébah (1823-86), a leading photographer of the Middle East, was renowned for his well-judged compositions and for the excellent print quality achieved by his technician A. Laroche. His studio, founded in 1857, was continued under his brother Cosimi and his son Jean. A single image in this series is not by Sebah: a view of the island of Philae (near the First Cataract of the Nile) is signed "A. Beato" in a shaded portion of the image, identifiying this as the work of Antonio (Antoine) Beato (after 1832-1906), a British and Italian photographer noted for his genre works, portraits, views of the architecture and landscapes of Egypt and the other locations in the Mediterranean region. - Slight fading; well preserved.         Constantinople et Athènes.

Istanbul and Athens, [1880s]. - Oblong album (370 x 284 mm) with 47 large albumen photographic prints, generally ca. 20 x 26 to ca. 22 x 28 cm, mostly signed and captioned in the negative (in French), mounted on both sides of the album's leaves. Original half calf binding with burgundy cloth covers, title gilt to upper cover. All edges gilt. A rare souvenir album containing 40 photographs of Istanbul and 7 of Athens. The Turkish images are almost exclusively signed by the renowned studio of Guillaume Berggren (1835-1920), the Swedish-born photographer who had come to Constantinople in 1866 and remained there for the rest of his life. Berggren's photographs were particularly popular with Scandinavian, German and Austrian tourists seeking souvenirs of their Middle-Eastern journey. The present album includes landscapes and city views, famous sights such as the Galata Tower and Bridge, the Yeni Cami Mosque, the Hagia Sophia with its interiors, a "shadirvan" fountain for ritual ablutions in front of the Hagia Sophia, the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, Rüstem Pasha Mosque, Skutari Cemetery, views of the Golden Horn, street scenes, dervishes, the Bosporus, the French embassy in Tarabya, the city port, the steps leading up the Grand Street of Pera (where Berggren's studio was located), etc. The Greek views include Mount Lycabettus, a two-image panorama of the Acropolis, the Olympieion and the so-called Theseion (Temple of Hephaestus). - A few photographs show insignificant loss of contrast, but they are altogether in good condition, mostly preserving their original crispness. A few images captioned in pencil on the backboard. Corners of binding bumped; leather chafed and spine-ends more markedly flawed. A fine collection. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Sushchnosti sotsializma d-ra A. Sheffle. i.e. The Quintessence of Socialism].

[N. p., 1880s]. - [92 pp.] 175:113 mm. Handwritten brochure, quires (sections) sewn together. Paper with watermarks (Uglich manufacture #6), ink. Foxing, quires are separated from each other, a tear and soiling of the last page. The text of the brochure is translated from the eighth edition (Gotha: F.A. Perthes, 1885) as it stated on the first page. The brochure contains nine chapters. Every leaf is numbered starting from the first chapter (44 numbered pages). With introduction to the first and the second editions. This manuscript book was created by Russian underground Marxists as they tried to spread their ideas. This kind of books were banned in the country at the time and a person cought distributing them would had faced arrest. This is an interesting historical evidence of the most revolutionary time in Russian history. The Quintessence of Socialism by a German economist Albert Schäffle (1831-1903) was mostly interpreted as an unbiased presentation of socialism but outside of Germany it was used as a basic introduction to socialism. It was a strictly scientific yet popular and easy to understand account of socialism. Among other things the author analyzes socialist idea of the public organization of production and the role of collective property in the process of production and sharing. It's not surprising that the book attracted a lot of attention of Social Democrats because Schäffle based a lot of his brief exposition of socialist economics on the theories of Marx. He concentrated solely upon economic theory and inadvertently emasculated Marxism of its political and truly revolutionary implications. Marx responded negatively to Schäffle's work claiming he had never built a socialist system in his works and called Schäffle's views on socialism fantasies but these fantasies became very popular among certain groups of revolutionaries including Narodnaya Volya in Russia. Schäffle's book was widely read by interested Social Democrats cannot be doubted, for it was admirably brief, clearly written, and easily available. Obviuosly the Social Democrats could not accept Schäffle without some modifications. Nevertheless, some of them imbibed a sufficient dosage to set up a tension within the movement between the traditional democratic-political principles and what they took to be their socialist-economic principles as defined by Schäffle. For example, a member of Land and Liberty group (Zemlya i Volya) Osip Aptekman wrote in his memoirs: ''[.] Marx's Zur Kritik and The Quintessence of Socialism by Schäffle were going the rounds. Plekhanov importuned me to scrutinize these two books. I constantly read it outloud and translated while Plekhanov was catching it on the fly and capturing it in his memory'' (Aptekman, O. Obshchestvo Zemlya i Volya of 1870s). First Russian translation was published in Geneva in 1881 (from the 7th German edition). In 1906 were published first Russian editions in Odessa and St. Petersburg. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        John Inglesant: A Romance

Birmingham: Cornish Brothers, 1880, 1880. First edition, one of 100 privately printed copies. This copy is signed "J. Henry Shorthouse / Lansdowne, Edgbaston" on the verso of the title page. Sadleir 3054; Wolff 6300. Spine water-stained; parchment a little soiled; some scattered foxing; good, sound copy.. 8vo, original white parchment boards, red lettering. An adventurous philosophical romance set in England and Europe of the early 17th century. John Inglesant was first published at the expense of its unknown author, an obscure middle-aged manufacturer in Birmingham. A copy came to the attention of Mrs. Humphrey Ward (who had recently published her first novel), and its strong themes of devotion in the face of religious and social upheaval strongly impressed her. She passed her copy on to Macmillan and that firm brought out the trade edition in 1881. John Inglesant became an immediate success, selling upwards of 80,000 copies, bringing literary fame to Shorthouse and ensuring the novel a place among the minor Victorian classics.

[ABORIGINES] Diorama of a bush scene, South Australian Court, Melbourne International Exhibition

Albumen print photograph, 210 x 285 mm, laid down on its original album leaf of thin card, no photographer's imprint; the albumen print is in good condition with excellent tonal range, a small surface blemish to the right of the Aboriginal figures in lower left corner, and some fading towards the upper and right margins; the mount with a few light marks;verso with a smaller format albumen print (probably also of the interior of the Exhibition Building), showing a display of jewellery in cabinets, including one case with printed sign reading '... of the Hanau jewellers'. Another view of the same scene, taken from a slightly different angle, is held in the collection of Museum Victoria, as part of an album of 61 photographs of the Melbourne Exhibition of 1880 presented by the Trustees of the Exhibition to its Assistant Secretary, Thomas B. Hill. It is believed that the photographer Ludovico Hart was given a private commission by the Trustees to photograph the exhibition. The similar view in the Hill album has a printed caption, '49. South Australian Court. Bush Scene'. The diorama, which features two life-size wax models of a male and female Aborigine dressed in possum skin cloaks, is remarkably similar to a diorama sent by the Colony of Victoria to the London Colonial and Indian Exhibition in 1886. The two Aboriginal figures are positioned outside a mia-mia, with a small group of traditional implements scattered on the ground. Opposite the mia-mia is a settler's bark hut with animal skins hung on the walls. A selection of taxidermied fauna, including several wallabies, large goannas and native birds, adorns the middle ground, with an impressive painted backdrop overlooking the entire scene; around the front perimeter of the diorama are what appear to be small plots of mineral and/or soil specimens from various locations in South Australia. The diorama was designed by an English journalist living in Adelaide, Richard Twopeny (see McKay, Judith.A good show : Colonial Queensland at international exhibitions, Memoirs of the Queensland Museum, Cultural Heritage Series, Volume 1, Part 2b). Inspired by the success of the Melbourne Exhibition, Twopeny and his business partner, French entrepreneur Jules Joubert, staged their own smaller exhibitions in Adelaide, Perth and Christchurch in 1881.
