1880s. This collection of predominantly advertising trade cards demonstrates the emergence of vanity products towards the end of the Victorian era. The collection concentrates 33 advertisements on hair renewers promoted to cure all hair imperfections. It claimed to return aging hair to its original color, prevent or reverse baldness, keep dandruff away and make hair grow thick and strong. Additionally it was to add luster and was recommended for people of all ages. Products include Barry's Tricopherous, Columbia Herp. C. Toilet Powder claimed to remove tan, sunburn, greasiness or oilness, unnatural dryness, freckles, redness, pimpms and other skin troubles as well as conceal blemishes of disease. Toilet powder was designed to make the skin graceful and matrons look twenty again. Burnett's Kalliston Toilet Water made an additional claim of affording instant relief for 'itching Piles'.         [ABORIGINES] Diorama of a bush scene, South Australian Court, Melbourne International Exhibition

Albumen print photograph, 210 x 285 mm, laid down on its original album leaf of thin card, no photographer's imprint; the albumen print is in good condition with excellent tonal range, a small surface blemish to the right of the Aboriginal figures in lower left corner, and some fading towards the upper and right margins; the mount with a few light marks;verso with a smaller format albumen print (probably also of the interior of the Exhibition Building), showing a display of jewellery in cabinets, including one case with printed sign reading '... of the Hanau jewellers'. Another view of the same scene, taken from a slightly different angle, is held in the collection of Museum Victoria, as part of an album of 61 photographs of the Melbourne Exhibition of 1880 presented by the Trustees of the Exhibition to its Assistant Secretary, Thomas B. Hill. It is believed that the photographer Ludovico Hart was given a private commission by the Trustees to photograph the exhibition. The similar view in the Hill album has a printed caption, '49. South Australian Court. Bush Scene'. The diorama, which features two life-size wax models of a male and female Aborigine dressed in possum skin cloaks, is remarkably similar to a diorama sent by the Colony of Victoria to the London Colonial and Indian Exhibition in 1886. The two Aboriginal figures are positioned outside a mia-mia, with a small group of traditional implements scattered on the ground. Opposite the mia-mia is a settler's bark hut with animal skins hung on the walls. A selection of taxidermied fauna, including several wallabies, large goannas and native birds, adorns the middle ground, with an impressive painted backdrop overlooking the entire scene; around the front perimeter of the diorama are what appear to be small plots of mineral and/or soil specimens from various locations in South Australia. The diorama was designed by an English journalist living in Adelaide, Richard Twopeny (see McKay, Judith.A good show : Colonial Queensland at international exhibitions, Memoirs of the Queensland Museum, Cultural Heritage Series, Volume 1, Part 2b). Inspired by the success of the Melbourne Exhibition, Twopeny and his business partner, French entrepreneur Jules Joubert, staged their own smaller exhibitions in Adelaide, Perth and Christchurch in 1881.

Hardy's Oomoo and other first class Adelaide wines

Melbourne and Sydney : Charles Troedel & Co., [c. 1880]. Lithograph printed in colour and gold, 525 x 705 mm, laid on linen, framed. A magnificent example of colonial printing. The central vignette with the Oomoo label features two Aboriginal hunters in an Australian landscape stalking kangaroos and an emu, flanked by a wreath of Sturt's desert pea (emblem of South Australia) and foliated vine leaves surrounding medals of prizes the wine has won at international exhibitions. Thomas Hardy arrrived in South Australia in 1850 and in 1853 planted shiraz and grenache grapes in a property a few miles out of the city on the banks of the River Torrens with an aim to 'create quality wines that will be prized in the markets of the world'. In 1857 his first vintage was sent in hogsheads to England and in 1859 he visited England with wine samples. Hardy launched Oomoo Wine in 1870. He named the wine after the local aboriginal word for ‘good’. A single example recorded in Australian collections (State Library of Victoria, donated by Troedel in 1968)

        The Trumpet-Major.

London: Smith, Elder & Co.,, 1880. A Tale. 3 volumes, octavo. Original red cloth, titles and illustration to front covers in black, titles to spines gilt, triple rule frames to rear covers, top edge untrimmed, others trimmed. Housed in a custom red cloth slipcase with red silk ribbon. Spines slightly faded, minor wear to tips, faint marks to rear covers, a couple of gatherings unopened; an excellent set in unusually bright cloth. First edition in book form of one of Hardy's lesser-known novels. Written during the year 1879 and serialised in the magazine Good Words (where it was bowdlerised by its Scottish clergyman editor), it is a tale in which Hardy compiled the three separate strands which at that time most affected his life. One strand was his own Dorset background, and in particular the idea of a family reminiscence; another is the strand of historical study, and in particular the concentration he was then giving to the years 1804–1805 and the effect of the then recent French Revolution. "These two strands... are firmly woven into the construction of the novel, and give it remarkable unity and a steady sense of reality. Hardy was determined that the charges of unreality, brought against 'The Return of the Native', should not be repeated" (Gittings). The third strand, natural in that Hardy was then writing with an idea of how his books might appear onstage, is that the characters are "universal figures from the traditional rituals of the theatre". "It was an inspired time to begin dramatic work. Ellen Terry had joined [Henry] Irving as his leading lady in 1878... Hardy's concentration in 1879 on theatrical matters held a great importance for the novel he was writing... The pattern of the book, embracing nearly every major character, derives from the old Italian Comedy of Masks, whose debased form, the harlequinade, was showing in nearly every Victorian theatre, burlesque and ballet" (ibid). In any event, The Trumpet-Major was a triumphant success with the critics; however, in spite of Hardy himself drawing the two vignettes for the volumes' front covers, the novel in book form did not sell well. On this copy the blank rear covers have a blind-stamped three-rule border; other copies are identical except for a two-rule border. Of the 1,000 copies printed, 600 were issued with the two-rule border (almost entirely to lending libraries), 1,500 were issued with the three-rule border a month or two later, and the remaining 20 unbound quires were remaindered two years later. Since the three-decker format was intended to be rented rather than bought by the public (the vast majority of first edition copies always went directly to lending libraries), it is increasingly difficult to find Hardy's pre-1890 novels in condition approaching this.

        The Works.

London: J. S. Virtue & Co.,, [c.1880]. Imperial Edition. Edited by Charles Knight. With Illustrations on Steel from Pictures by C. W. Cope, R.A.; W. P. Frith, R.A. … and others. In two volumes. 2 volumes, folio (370 x 270 mm). Contemporary purple half morocco, purple cloth boards, raised bands, compartments lettered and elaborately decorated in gilt, marbled endpapers, edges gilt. Engraved vignette title pages, frontispieces, and 42 plates with tissue guards. Bound with earlier variants of both Lists of Illustrations. Boards a little marked, occasional foxing to plates, otherwise a fine set. An attractive Victorian edition of Shakespeare's works, beautifully illustrated by some of the leading contemporary artists, with commentary by the great Shakespearian critic Charles Knight. Knight's "first major project as an author took shape in 1837, when he resolved to produce a pictorial edition of Shakespeare's works. He started searching for 'authentic' visual materials and began a critical reading of the texts. His edition was based substantially—indeed, too substantially—on the first folio edition, although he made comparisons with other quartos and, in some cases, with originals in the British Museum. His background reading led to a deep interest in Shakespeare's life and the edition, published between 1838 and 1841 (he published six later editions of the works of Shakespeare), was prefaced with a one-volume biography. Knight succeeded in contextualizing Shakespeare's life as no biographer except Nathan Drake had done, and in dismissing a couple of the more absurd legends surrounding the playwright's early life" (ODNB).

Across the Zodiac: The Story of a Wrecked Record Deciphered, Translated and Edited by . .

London: Trübner & Co., 1880, 1880. First edition. Locke, Spectrum of Fantasy, page 96; not in Wolff, who had but one novel by Greg. Hinges and spine skillfully repaired; very good copy. Rare.. 2 vols, 8vo, original brown cloth, gilt lettering. A major work of Victorian science fiction, the story of "a flight, in a huge spacecraft powered by a force called apergy, to Mars, which is found to be populated by a scientifically advanced people" - Locke. The story purports to be a translation of a manuscript in Latin, which is discovered by a former Colonel in the Confederate army, after he is shipwrecked on an unknown island in the South Pacific. Percy Greg (1836-1889) was a journalist from Manchester, who had an interest in American history, particularly the Civil War; hence the Confederate character in an English novel of science fiction. He wrote several other novels and was a prolific contributor to Blackwood's, the Manchester Guardian, Fraser's, etc. See Allibone, Supplement, and the ODNB.

O soprotivlenii zhidkostei I o vozdukhaoplavanii [On the resistance of fluids and aerial navigation]. St Petersburg, Sentiabra, 1880. 8vo. Modern cloth with the original wrappers preserved.

DSB IX, p. 286; cf. Brockett, Bibliography of Aeronautics VIII, 337. First edition of this extremely rare treatise by Mendeleev, the eminent Russian chemist. This work is very important for the appendices which encapsulate a survey of and commentary on the leading authors on fluid mechanics. Mendeleev here includes detailed analyses of the sections of Newton's Principia treating the behaviour of fluids. In addition to treatises by Bernoulli, Bossut and Rankine, he evaluates Poisson's Traité de mécanique as well as Euler's translation of Robins' New Principles of Gunnery on fluid resistance to high-speed objects. Wrappers slightly soiled. Good copy.

        The Trumpet-Major. A Tale.

London: Smith, Elder & Co., 1880 - 3 volumes, octavo. "These two strands. are firmly woven into the construction of the novel, and give it remarkable unity and a steady sense of reality. Ellen Terry had joined [Henry] Irving as his leading lady in 1878. Hardy's concentration in 1879 on theatrical matters held a great importance for the novel he was writing. Purdy pp. 31–5. [Attributes: First Edition]

Arab Types. Syria, [ca. 1918-ca. 1921]. Oblong album (18 x 26 cm). An album containing 14 black and white photographic portraits (mostly about 17 x 12 cm) plus a smaller print of one. Mounted in a ca. 1930 album of black paper leaves (boards covered with black cloth).

Fascinating collection of 14 photographic portraits showing 13 sheikhs and tribesmen from several tribes in and around Syria, all with captions that usually give the subject's name and tribe. The photos, often highly expressive profile studies, were taken and assembled by Lt. Col. Walter Francis Stirling (1880-1958), T. E. Lawrence's Chief of Staff in 1918. The named tribes are the Shammar (nomadic Bedouins in northern Arabia, Syria and Iraq), Ruwalla (semi-nomadic Bedouins led by the Sha'lan family, also in northern Arabia and Syria), Hadidiyin (nomadic Bedouin sheep herders in Syria and northern Iraq), Walda (Kurds in Syria), Yazidis (Kurds in northern Iraq), Agaidat (Beduoins in Syria) and "Abu Klamin"[?] (not identified). The best known subjects are Fawaz al Sha'lam, Emir of Ruwalla (grandson of Nuri Sha'lan (1847-1842!), who commanded a large portion of the troops that entered Damascus with Faisal in 1918) and Daham al-Hadi, Sheikh of the Shammar. The latter is described as "Paramount Sheikh"of the Shammar (in Iraq), a title granted him by the British in 1920 that he lost when Faisal became King of Iraq in 1921.One photograph slightly damaged, mostly outside the image area, but further in very good condition, with only an occasional small surface scratch or spot. Rare photographic portraits of sheiks and tribesmen in T.E. Lawrence's Damascus circle of friends and enemies.

Alice and Other Fairy Plays for Children

London: W. Swan Sonnenschein and Allen,, 1880. Octavo. Original green cloth, titles and vignettes to spine and front board in gilt and black, all edges gilt, cream coated endpapers. Frontispiece with tissue-guards, 7 plates, 4 pictorial initials by Mary Sibree, and music scores to accompany each play. An excellent copy. First edition of the first printed dramatic adaptation of the Alice stories, and the first version to appear without Tenniel's illustrations. The volume includes two illustrations of Alice and a picture initial of Alice by Mary Sibree. The play was "intended to be acted for children" (Cohen, p. 402) and includes scenes from both Alice books, together with musical settings for "Speak Roughly" and "Beautiful Soup". Having failed to engage Arthur Sullivan to write some songs for a musical production in 1877, Dodgson might have been expected to be protective of his copyright, but he proved amenable: in the preface the author writes, "I have to express my sincerest gratitude to Mr. Lewis Carroll for the permission to dramatize his charming story." On 6 November 1879 the author presented a copy to Dodgson, which he sent back for inscription: "I may candidly confess, it would be a much higher gratification to me to possess a copy given to me by the author, with my name written in it in her own hand". Ten years later, on 19 December 1889 he notes in his diary "Went over to Birmingham to see a performance of 'Alice' (Mrs. Freiligrath-Kroeker's version) at the High School."
