Embossed illustrated celluloid front board with figured cloth spine and rear board, metal clasp (lacking the hasp). 20 cabinet card albumen photographs inserted in thick card leaves with gilt edges. ». Exemplaire de la plus intime provenance.

Diwan al Hammasah, a Selection of Arabic Poems by Abu Tammam Habib Ibn Aws al-Tayi, Prescribed for the Decree of Honor Examination in Arabic for Civil and Military Officers. Edited from the collation of three old and accurate MSS, by Mawlawi Kabir Ud Din

Urdoo Guide Press, Calcutta 1880 - TWO VOLUMES. Volume I: 112 pp., / Volume II: 113-232 pp., Arabic text, title printed in Arabic in volume one & in English in volume two, previous owner’s name inscribed in Arabic on front endpaper, contemporary green cloth, slightly spotted and rubbed round edges, browning to end leaves/ Extremely rare. In the last quarter of the 18th century, Calcutta grew into the first major centre of commercial and government printing. For the first time in the context of South Asia it became possible to talk of a nascent book trade which was fully fledged and included printing, binding, subscription publishing and also libraries. The work explains how the British East India Company introduced printing not simply to facilitate trade, but more importantly, to consolidate the empire. Fort William College, founded in Calcutta in 1800, provided a further stimulus for printing Arabic, Persian and particularly Urdu texts needed to instruct servants of the East India Company in those languages. By 1820 about twenty Arabic and another twenty Persian texts were printed for the College’s use at various Calcutta presses. The East India Company had introduced lithography to India in the early 1820s, which rapidly displaced typography for Islamic printing as presses were established right across Northern India." (Encyclopaedia of Islam Volume VI, pp. 805-06). Not at Copac. Size: 8vo [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[Attributes: Signed Copy]

        Kitab al-Luterjia al-'Ilahiyya.

Shuwair, Lebanon 1880 - 102 pp., Arabic lithographic text within borders, printed in red & black, partly two column per page with some Greek text, title printed in red & black, engraved vignette on title page, contemporary full calf, decorated & gilt, raised band spine, scattered light foxing, pages browned, previous owner’s name inscribed on front end paper, copy in very good condition, Printed at Dayr Mar Yuhanna al-Sayigh, Shuweir, 1880. Yuhanna Famm al-Zahab known as Saint John Chrysostom (347-407) is considered both by the Greek Orthodox Church and the Eastern Catholic Church to be one of the earliest saints. He was famous for his extensive philosophical works and his sermons. He lived the life of an ascetic in one of the caves near Antioch. In the year 386 Chrysostom was ordained priest by Flavian, and from that moment began his real importance in ecclesiastical history. His chief task during the next twelve years was preaching, which he had to do either instead of or with Bishop Flavian. But no doubt the larger part of the popular religious instruction and education fell upon him. The earliest notable occasion which showed his power of speaking and his great authority was the Lent of 387, when he delivered his sermon "On the Statues". In 398 Chrysostom was elected a Patriarch of Constantinople. But, as the result of a conflict which broke out within the Church, Chrysostom was abducted to Cucusus, a secluded and rugged place on the east frontier of Armenia, and his followers were accused of treason. Chrysostom has deserved a place in ecclesiastical history, not simply as Bishop of Constantinople, but chiefly as a Doctor of the Church. He wrote numerous letters and books, including the one which was published by Saint John Convent at Shuwair Mount Lebanon. Size: 8vo. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Bengal Paper Mill Co., Ltd., Sign

(Calcutta, India: Bengal Paper Mill Co.), n.d.. Papermaking. metal sign (30 by 19.5 inches) backed by wood. A large metal sign advertising the Bengal Paper Mill Co.'s "Well Known Quality Tiger Brand Papers." John C. Eddison states that the company was established during the 1880s by members of the British business community in Calcutta. It was founded "at a time when the outlook for Indian papermaking seemed very promising," just after the British government announced, in 1881, a policy of giving trade preference to Indian made articles. In the 1890s, the company developed a "workable process for the pulping of bamboos." The company fared less well after World War II. See Eddison, A Case Study in Industrial Development--The Growth of the Indian Pulp and Paper Industry (Cambridge, Massachusetts: Center for International Studies of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1955), 215-25. Eddison also noted that the company submitted semi-annual reports to the Registrar of Joint Stock Companies in Calcutta from 1893 to 1953. In 1971, the company was still listed in the Times of India Directory & Yearbook (Bombay: Times of India Press, 1971), 746. Although there are rust spots, mainly along the edges, the sign is quite legible. Its color logo, at the center of the sign, is in fine condition.

[PACIFIC - TAHITI] Spitz, Charles Georges; Hoare, Susan; Miot, Paul-Emile. [Album of Fifty Early Original Photographs of Tahiti, Including Portraits of Queen Pomare IV, King Pomare V and His Wife, Queen of Bora Bora, French Naval Officers, Views of the French Naval Transport Ship Scorff, Matavai Bay, Titled:] Souvenirs l'Ocean Pacifique

Ca. 1880-1887. 32,5x25 cm. Sixty album leaves (ten blank). Fifty albumen prints (one in two copies) of various size, from 7x4,5 cm to ca. 20x25,5 cm, the majority are ca. 11x16,5 cm or slightly larger. Photographs are mounted on rectos of the album leaves (with one mounted on verso, one loosely inserted); the majority with period manuscript pencil or ink captions in French on the mounts. Nine photos additionally mounted on card (including five images on the cabinet cards of Papeete photo studios of Georges Spitz and Mrs. S. Hoare). Contemporary cloth album with colour stamped decorative ornament on the boards and spine; paper label with a faded ink title on the front cover, spine and back cover with some mild fading, but overall a very good album and strong interesting photographs. Interesting collection of early views of Tahiti taken by prominent local photographers just a few years after the annexation of the island by France in 1880. The photos were apparently collected by a French naval officer during his service in 1886-1887 on the transport ship 'Scorff' of the French Pacific Naval Division under command of Raymond Paul Adolphe Marie de Royer de Saint Julien (1849-1900). The album opens with a portrait of Queen Pomare IV taken by an important photographer of Tahiti Admiral Paul-Emile Miot in ca. 1870; a part of the outstanding series of photos of Oceania taken by Miot during his service as the chief of staff of the French Naval Pacific Division on board the frigate 'Astrée' in 1868-71. The other images in the album belong to the Papeete studios of Charles Spitz and Susan Hoare: five photos are mounted on the distinctive studio cards with printed names of the photographers, and eight more were identified on the basis of Jean-Yves Tréhin's ''Tahiti, l'Éden à l'épreuve de la photographie'' (Gallimard, 2003, see pp. 68, 72, 84, 85, 89, 94, 100, and others); the other images most likely were taken by the same studios, judging on the similar style and choice of objects. The photographs include several port raits of the rulers of the Society Islands, including those of Queen Pomare IV, King Pomare V and his wife Queen Marau, the king surrounded by his tohitus (chiefs), and the Queen of Bora Bora; the members of the influential Salmon family (the founder of the clan Alexander Salmon (1820-1866), a merchant from Britain, became the first Jew to reside in Tahiti); interesting studio group portraits of Tahitians in traditional costumes; a well-known portrait of a Marquesan warrior, families of the ''Tahitians from the interior'', and others. There are also interesting street views of Papeete and several photos of the interior of Tahiti (most likely taken by George Spitz during his travels across the island): Matavai Bay, Fautaua River and Falls, Le Diadème Peak, Taravao; and a distant view of the Moorea Island. Ten 'naval' photos include a portrait of Rear-Admiral Marcq de Saint-Hilaire, the commander of the Pacific Division at the time, group portrait of 'Scorff's' officers (in two copies), views of the 'Scorff', 'Décret', 'Duquesne' and other ships of the Pacific Division on the Tahitian roadstead, festivities on the 14th of July in the Papeete harbor, a large view of a military review, and others. There is also an interesting photo of the distribution of prizes at the first Papeete Catholic school for boys in 1886, featuring Delphino Moracchini (governor of French Polynesia in 1885-1886).

PACIFIC - TAHITI] Spitz, Charles Georges; Hoare, Susan; Miot, Paul-Emile. [Album of Fifty Early Original Photographs of Tahiti, Including Portraits of Queen Pomare IV, King Pomare V and His Wife, Queen of Bora Bora, French Naval Officers, Views of the French Naval Transport Ship Scorff, Matavai Bay, Titled:] Souvenirs l'Ocean Pacifique

      - Ca. 1880-1887. [Photo Album]: European Travels

1880. Near Fine. Oblong folio. Full brown leathers with the words "album of photographs" stamped in gilt on the front board. 11" x 14". A collection of 65 sepia toned albumen photographs some include captions and photographer information in the plate. The photos vary in size with most of them measuring 8.25" x 10.5" or 6" x 10". Very good with modestly worn edges and some foxing on the pages. An assemblage of photographs from roughly 1880 beginning in Paris with detailed exterior and interior photographs of La Sainte-Chapelle and the Hotel de Ville. The album continues through Belgium, Nuremberg, Switzerland, Prague, England, and Milan among others, displaying some of the most impressive attractions and architecture of each country or city. Some of these include La Fleche de la Cathedrale in Strasbourg which was the tallest building in the world until 1874; Lausanne Cathedral of Switzerland; and The Frauenkirche Church in Nuremberg. Towards the middle of the book are scenes of locals, one of a dark skinned gondolier, uncaptioned but presumably in Venice, a boy and an older woman sitting in an ally in San Remo, and priests sitting by a well on the grounds of the Carthusian monastery in Florence. Photo credits include the Italian photographer, Edizioni Brogi, A. Wimmer, and the German photographer Giorgio Sommer. The album is full of beautiful European landscapes and views of numerous churches, abbeys, and castles throughout the continent. A lovely assortment of late Victorian photography.
