Lord Stanley engraving Sir Frederick Arthur, 1st Baron Stanley of Preston, 16th Earl of Derby (Lord Stanley of Preston) (1841-1908)

London : published by Morris & Co. 392 Strand W.C. , [1880]. 1st Edition. No binding. Good+. TRULY RARE. WE CAN FIND NO OTHER COPIES OF THIS ENGRAVING. No date but probably circa 1880 when he would be about 39 years old. [Frederick Arthur Stanley, 16th Earl of Derby] "Lord Stanley" engraving London published by Morris & Co. 392 Strand W.C. Drawn by C.W. Walton. Paper size is 17 1/2"" x 23 5/8". Plate mark size is 10 1/2" x 13". Image size is 5" x 7". Signature Imprint: Lord Stanley ( [facsimile signature] ) Stanley family motto, "Sans Changer" or without changing. Some soiling overall on paper (but not on actual image) and top left corner bent and dark marks. Bottom left corner with darker mark and small bent corner. Overall condition is good+. In 1892, this Lord Stanley, 16th Earl of Derby gave a treasured national icon Ñ the Stanley Cup to symbolize hockey Championship in Canada. It is the same Stanley Cup the National Hockey League competes for each year now. He was the 6th Governor General of Canada., National Portrait Gallery, London has only one similar engraving of Lord Stanley where he is older and their different Lord Stanley engraving is printed later. , "There are 13 portrait lithographs by the artist (Walton) in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London. Many of the works he produced were of contemporary figures, including Francis Thomas de Grey Cowper, Seventh Earl Cowper (1834 -1905), who became Lord Lieutenant of Ireland and Charlotte Anne Montagu-Douglas-Scott (née Thynne), Duchess of Buccleuch (1811-1895), who served as Mistress of the Robes to Queen Victoria. Some of Walton's portraits were used to illustrate books. It seems that many of his earlier works were published by the firm of Morris & Co., 392 Strand, but he later published his own works from 103, Shaftesbury Avenue. Interestingly, a lithograph by Walton of Philip William Skynner Miles in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery was published by 'Morris, Walton & Co', so it seems he may have briefly been in partnership with Morris & Co." quoted from Philippa Martin, Curator, Information and Research (Historical) UK Government Art Collection

New York 1880 New York, 1880. 13-3/4 x 11 inches. The caption: "Mr. Johnson, leaving his office for his country home loaded as usual, meets a French Dressmaker" [who says] "Ah Monsieur Johnson--I catch you just in time, here are three new dresses for Madame, you will carry them very careful and not muss them.". Old folds, else near fine. Peters, Currier & Ives, I, p. 70 et seq . Thomas Worth (1834- 1917), "Uncle Tommy" as he was known to all his acquaintances and friends, sold his first comic sketch to Nathaniel Currier in 1855; he was to become one of the most popular of Currier & Ives's artists. He specialized in comic and caricature work--one of his "Darktown Comics" lithographs sold 73,000 copies--but also did racing and sporting scenes, as well as other subjects. In addition, he illustrated Dickens's Old Curiosity Shop, and contributed to "Judge" and other periodicals. He was a careful craftsman, often revising his work until he had achieved the best possible effect, and was noted for his enormous personal charm

        [Strindberg] Klubbens handlingar.

Första kapitlet. 23 november 1880-1881. Stockholm, Central-tryckeriet, 1881. (12) s. + (STAAFF, ERIK) Strindberg och "Klubben". Ur Pehr Staaffs efterlämnade papper. Tidningsurklipp ur Dagens nyheter den 25 augusti 1918. (3) s. Ej i Zetterlund.

TABLE MOUNTAIN, Cape of Good Hope, South Africa

Cape Town:. 1880.. 13-1/8" x 7-7/16". Broadside, printed recto only. 11 stanzas of verse. Text double column, with thin vertical rule dividing. Signed in type at conclusion: "Charles F. Crewes. / Cape Town, June 2, 1880. / 42, Adderley-street.". Age toning & spotting to paper. 5 faint horizontal fold-lines. A VG. copy.. A poetical tribute, "Kingly Mountain, soaring high ... Imperial monarch of the plain!", to this prominent geographical sentinel watching over Cape Town, which, from the earliest to the present day, remains a popular attraction to the populace below.Ê The author a bit of an enigma... Theal records no other works by Crewes, with additional research suggesting he was a Cape Town photographer, having a studio, during the early 1880s, at the broadside's printed address: 42, Adderley-street. With respect to the piece itself, we are unable to find this literary work recorded in any major on-line database, including that of the University of South Africa, nor do we find it in the NUC. A rare 19th C. Cape Town publication. . At top, an S. Hampton drawn image, 2-9/16" x 6-1/8", depicting Cape Town harbor, with Table Mountain, Devil's Peak & "The Lion" in the background. Lithographed by H. Doree, Burg St., Cape Town.

Garfield’s signed copy of the 1880 “Report of the Commissioners of Fisheries of Maryland” – the year he was elected President

The first Presidential memorial library, completed at the Lawnfield estate in Ohio by the widow of James Garfield four years after his assassination, houses almost 3,000 books that were used and treasured by the 20th president. Books were a scarce commodity to young James, who lost his father before the age of two, and was raised by his mother who struggled to maintain a humble existence. Both James Garfield and his wife Lucretia were voracious readers and amassed a large collection of books. Some twenty years ago, several dozen of his books were de-accessioned, and one of these books is described below: Book, “Report of the Commissioners of Fisheries of Maryland January, 1880,” soft cover, 78 pages plus 269 page Appendix “Development of the American Oyster,”, 5.5” x 9”. Annapolis: Maryland Republican Print., 1880. Signed “J.A. Garfield” on the cover. Illustrated with charts and diagrams including ten plates “Development of the Oyster.” Attached to the last page is a fold-out 21.5” x 36.5” United States Coast Survey color map, “Coast Chart / Chesapeake Bay” (slight tear). Light soiling at the top and right edges of the cover. Foxing on the fore-edge. Housed in a custom blue-cloth covered clamshell case with “Report of the / Commissioners / of Fisheries / of Maryland” stamped in gilt on a blue leather label at the top of the spine and, on lower portion, also in gilt, “James Garfield’s / Signed Copy / 1880.” On January 13, 1880, the month this report was issued, U.S. Representative James A. Garfield was elected to the U.S. Senate for the term beginning March 4, 1881. On November 2, 1880, Garfield was elected President. At that moment he was a member of the House of Representatives, Senator-elect, and President-elect. On November 8th, he resigned from the House and on December 23rd, after the Electoral College met, he declined his January 1880 election to the Senate. On March 4, 1881, he was inaugurated President.

Alexander Edelmann Leipzig: Alexander Edelmann, 1880. 8vo. 44pp. Original printed wrappers, spine a bit chipped. 230 x 153 mm. Ownership inscription on front wrapper of "Fehling," most likely H.C. von Fehling (1812-85), professor in the Technical High School, Stuttgart, best known for his test for sugar in urine (G-M 680, "Fehling's solution," 1848), a test which opened the way for a definitive chemical study of diabetes mellitus. First Edition. Garrison-Morton 2329: ". . . Among [Cohnheim's] many valuable experiments, the greatest perhaps was his successful inoculation of tuberculosis in the anterior chamber of the rabbit's eye, 1877, an account of which is included in the above work. This proved that tuberculous material derived from different sources owed its infectiveness to the same contagious factor. . ."         Dorothy: A Poem

Autograph Manuscript. 78 folio leaves, written on the rectos only. Small tears at the extremities, some smudges, a few pencil corrections, mostly editorial in nature, near fine, housed in a cloth chemise and slipcase. Dated in pencil 14 March 1880. Laid in is a Typed Letter Signed from the author's great nephew, A.N.L. Munby, the compiler of the monumental catalog of the fantastic Sir Thomas Phillipps collection of manuscripts, dated in 1956 to an American bookseller, thanking the bookseller for informing him that he has three of Phillipps's manuscripts, which he will add to his lists, expressing interest that the dealer has his great-uncle's manuscript, and mentioning that the rest of A.J. Munby's manuscripts are at Trinity College in Cambridge. The author's finished and final draft of this epic poem about a working woman, a subject he apparently found fascinating, as he clandestinely married a maidservant while he continually interviewed working women. His diaries of these interviews are generally considered of equal or even more lasting value than his poetry. .

A.L.S. Longfellow to noted poet and journalist Charles Kent

4 pp. Cambridge, Apr. 29, 1880. 12mo. Neatly written letter from Longfellow to Charles Kent (1823-1902), well-known English poet, biographer and journalist, concerning a book written by Kent ("Corona Catholica), and others sent to Longfellow for which Kent had never heard back concerning Longfellow's receipt of the books. He writes: "My Dear Mr. Kent, I hasten wit all speed to thank you for your kind letter and for the "Corona Catholica," both of which reached me safely and are very welcome. But I am troubled by what you say of the other books sent so long ago, your collected Poems, and "Charles Dickens as Reader." They were both received and I wrote to you at the time a letter full of thanks, particularly for the Poems and among the Poems, more particularly for the beautiful lines addressed to me, which I always deeply feel." He goes on to say that he is truly grieved that his letter never reached Kent, with the only consolation being this letter. He also thanks Kent for the "Corona" but states that is "very curious..." and that he does care as much for the "Prophecy of St. Malachi" as Kent does. "But I do care for the versions of your lines in various languages. I have always been much interested in such things, and this is a valuable addition to my little store of linguistic curiosities. Signed in full, "Yours faithfully, Henry W. Longfellow. Superb letter in very good condition.
