        A.L.S. Longfellow to noted poet and journalist Charles Kent

      4 pp. Cambridge, Apr. 29, 1880. 12mo. Neatly written letter from Longfellow to Charles Kent (1823-1902), well-known English poet, biographer and journalist, concerning a book written by Kent ("Corona Catholica), and others sent to Longfellow for which Kent had never heard back concerning Longfellow's receipt of the books. He writes: "My Dear Mr. Kent, I hasten wit all speed to thank you for your kind letter and for the "Corona Catholica," both of which reached me safely and are very welcome. But I am troubled by what you say of the other books sent so long ago, your collected Poems, and "Charles Dickens as Reader." They were both received and I wrote to you at the time a letter full of thanks, particularly for the Poems and among the Poems, more particularly for the beautiful lines addressed to me, which I always deeply feel." He goes on to say that he is truly grieved that his letter never reached Kent, with the only consolation being this letter. He also thanks Kent for the "Corona" but states that is "very curious..." and that he does care as much for the "Prophecy of St. Malachi" as Kent does. "But I do care for the versions of your lines in various languages. I have always been much interested in such things, and this is a valuable addition to my little store of linguistic curiosities.         Ancient Chester: a Series of Illustrations

      London & Manchester: Henry Sothern & Co, 1880 Of the streets of this old city, taken sixty years since, including views of Edgars Cave, St Johns Church & Eaton Hall. In contemporary black leather spine with crimson cloth covers, bumped and worn at edges and corners, large title in gilt to black leather label to front cover. Spine has contemporary gilt tooling. Internally, endpapers have been tidied up, endpapers have a very small amount of foxing, title in red and black ink within double ruled red ink borders, titlepage has some tiny paper loss to thumbing at very edge of page, 29 full page atmospheric etchings, each with a leaf of text, not paginated. A great Chester title.Hughes, social reformer and children's writer sought an appointment, which he was given in July 1882, as a county court judge. This brought an end to his involvement in politics, and a move to Chester. He resigned from the Co-operative Union. His work as a judge seems to have been congenial to him although, according to John Telford, ‘his rough and ready justice became a byword for constant reversal on appeal’ (Telford, 10). During the 1880s he wrote four more biographies, including Daniel Macmillan (1882) and David Livingstone (1889). He built himself a house called Uffington, at Dee Hills Park, Chester, to which he moved in October 1885. See ODNB for a full Bio.

Mary Anne Evans, better known by her pen name George Eliot, was an English novelist, journalist and translator, and one of the leading writers of the Victorian era. She is the author of seven novels, including Adam Bede (1859), The Mill on the Floss (1860), Silas Marner (1861), Middlemarch (187172), and Daniel Deronda (1876), most of them set in provincial England and well known for their realism and psychological insight. Throughout her career, Eliot wrote with a politically astute pen. From Adam Bede to The Mill on the Floss and Silas Marner, Eliot presented the cases of social outsiders and small-town persecution. Felix Holt, the Radical and The Legend of Jubal were overtly political, and political crisis is at the heart of Middlemarch, in which she presents the stories of a number of denizens of a small English town on the eve of the Reform Bill of 1832. The novel is notable for its deep psychological insight and sophisticated character portraits. With vignette title pages andtwenty-five plates, collated complete. Spine nonexistent at foot. Calf significantly rubbed, missing in most places. Boards rubbed, loose. Text clean, brittle, but loosely bound; some pages loose. Text in good condition. In a cloth clamshell case, leather label. Edward Paul Duffy was a soldier and printer aboard the U.S.S. Trenton. During his time on board Duffy printed the TRENTON HERALD, a twice monthly newspaper. Newspaper clippings pasted to the front board of his journal herald Duffy as the pioneer of American amphibious printing and estimate his readership to number one thousand. Duffy also served as a correspondent to the BALTIMORE SUN, writing of the activities of the European Squadron and his experiences in various Mediterranean cities. Clippings of his articles from the BALTIMORE SUN are tipped in, as well as several pieces of his shipboard printing, INSPECTION OF POWDER DIVISION and COMPARATIVE STATEMENT OF TIMES OF EVOLUTIONS DURING INSPECTION OF EUROPEAN SQUADRON. Duffy's journal records the daily weather, activities aboard the Trenton, and his trips off the ship in cities such as Madeira and Villefranche. He frequently notes his press and letters or activities related to it, i.e. the printing of a program for the Snowflakes which performed before Christmas of 1880 and subscriptions made to his paper by prominent Americans such as capitalist J.W. Mackay. The Trenton sailed home for the centennial celebration of the victory at Yorktown, but Duffy was honorably discharged after two years of service and discontinued his journal upon reaching the Chesapeake Bay. A wonderful record of shipboard printing in the American Navy.

COBDEN-SANDERSON (stamp-signed and dated on rear turn-in), covers diapered in gilt with Tudor roses on leafy vines (C-S Design #20), each compartment formed by the roses containing an "M," the center cruciform panel on the upper cover with the name "MITFORD" tooled in gilt, a "B" above it and a "C" below it, rear cover with the date "24 FEBRUARY 1886" in the center compartment; raised bands, guttered (i.e., concave) spine (as intended), spine panels with central Tudor rose surrounded by leafy vines and much stippling, gilt turn-ins, all edges gilt and gauffered. Spine with just a hint of sunning (toward caramel, as almost inevitable with green morocco), a pinprick hole just below the rose in the tail edge panel, light foxing to frontispiece, otherwise AN EXTREMELY FINE COPY INSIDE AND OUT AND A BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE OF THE TASTE AND SKILL OF A BINDING DONE WITH COBDEN-SANDERSON'S OWN HANDS. This is one of the most attractive volumes--and almost certainly the most important binding--we have ever offered for sale: an early specimen of the work of the central figure in the history of English bookbinding, and a volume with a charming, romantic story as well as technical issues of considerable interest attached to it. Cobden-Sanderson (1840-1922) did not produce many bindings with his own hands, but he did nothing short of change the entire course of bookbinding in England. Tidcombe's detailed and exhaustive catalogue lists just 167 examples of bindings produced by him, all of them executed between July of 1884 and March of 1893. Through this small corpus of work, Cobden-Sanderson "rejuvenated English binding" with his theories of design "and set it on a new course of development." (Morgan Library Exhibition catalogue) Nixon calls our binder a "pre-eminent figure . . . both as a designer of great originality, who rescued the craft from half a century of purely imitative work, and as a craftsman of outstanding ability." Produced during the first 20 months of his career (the 33rd item in Tidcombe's census), the present binding marks two firsts: the first use of the new Tudor rose and rose leaves (tools 2a, 6a, 6n), and the first employment of an important improved method of preparing the leather (specifically, the manner in which our binder crushed, or pressed, the morocco in preparation for its gilt decoration). Access to the personal side of this volume can be found in Cobden-Sanderson's journal entry for 22 December 1885, which records that "on Saturday [19 December] Mitford and Lady Clementine came and were exceedingly polite. Mitford brought me a large paper (Kegan Paul) 'Princess' to bind by the 24th February, mode and finish to be left entirely to myself." The binder's notes observe that "the design of back-side varies from front. The 'M' is inverted in the lower half [of the back]. This, an accident, [is] a great improvement. Time 54 3/4 hours. Undercharged." We know from the letter tipped into the volume that the book was delivered on 23rd February 1886 "by a sure hand," arriving just in time, as it was to be Lady Clementine's gift to her husband on his 49th birthday, the next day. Cobden-Sanderson visited the Mitfords in April and was pleased to find Bertram Mitford thrilled with the binding, even though his "Philistine friends" had thought the (intentionally) concave spine a flaw. Cobden-Sanderson records in his journal on 2 April 1886: "I advised him to stand by the gutter [i.e., defend the spine design], for it was most beautiful." Mitford (1837-1916), the diplomat and author, was created first Baron Redesdale in 1902; he is best known for being the grandfather of the brilliant and scandalous Mitford sisters, including noted writers Nancy and Jessica, Nazi sympathizers Diana and Unity, and the current dowager duchess of Devonshire. Not to be overlooked is the fact that the present volume comprises a beautifully printed strictly limited luxury edition of "The Princess" (about which, see item #144, below).

        Romola

      London: Smith, Elder & Co, 1880. Two royal octavo volumes. (xii), 306, (ii); (xii), (404)pp. One of 1,000 numbered copies comprising a deluxe edition. Illustrated with twenty-four engraved plates by Sir Frederick Leighton and numerous smaller vignettes. Each volume features three fore-edge paintings in the typical Fazakerley style: in each, a larger central painting is flanked by two smaller, atmospheric paintings, all of which are directly related to Eliot's novel. The large painting depicts the title character assisting her blind father in his study, and the smaller paintings show the front of a Florentine villa and a bridge scene; the second volume's large painting has Romola kneeling before the monk Savonarola to receive his blessing, and this is surrounded by an archway above and a sea cliff below. These paintings, which characteristically do not require fanning to view, are further heightened by Fazakerley's trademark gauffered strapwork, which essentially frames each painting, giving it further emphasis. This strapwork carries across the three edges of the text block. & & The set is bound by Fazakerley in brown crushed levant in a near-Jansenist style: save for a set of elaborate gilt monograms on the upper covers, the exterior is plain. The doublures feature a Greek urn with two tendrils rising in a delicate swirling pattern, with a variety of buds and flowers emanating from them and filling the panel. This motif is framed by a triple gilt rule, with beveled corners and a scalloped fillet border. Thomas Fazakerley served an apprenticeship with John Sutton in 1813 before establishing his own bindery in 1835. His son, John, succeeded him in 1860 and continued the business until the outbreak of World War I. The Fazakerley bindery was noted for the high quality of their work, especially on their full crushed Levant "reliures de luxe," which featured triptych fore-edge paintings, such as the present example. Calligraphic gift inscriptions to front blank leaves of each volume. Internally fine, save for foxing to the plates from the tissue guards. The bindings show faint uniform fading to spines and a few minor scratches, otherwise fine.

        The City of Dreadful Night

      London - Reeves and Turner, 1880 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. James Thomson's first and most important book. In the very scarce first issue large paper copy, of which only forty were printed. The City of Dreadful Night is a study in melancholia and the introverted mind. It is a city of the mind, but real: a real unreal city. Nobody knows how they got there because the place itself is lost in a trackless wilderness of savage mountains, ravines, and bleak moors. Even the sea into which the River of the Suicides flows is called shipless'. From the hills, the city is a nocturne in lead and faded gold: a line of faint light marks where the city broods in its own endless night. On the skyline, like congealed grief, looms the city's goddess, Melencolia. In day time the city shrinks till it's no bigger than a human heart but it is always there, a place of despair peopled by a sad brotherhood of monks and kings, priests, drunks, artists, poets, soldiers. It is a brotherhood, being inhabited mainly by men. Few women are there and, says the poet thankfully, fewer children. Nor are there many elderly men, which may suggest that the people afflicted this way either grow out of it or die young. (Thomson wrote the poem in two stages, when he was thirty-six and next when he was thirty-eight. He was only forty-seven when he died. ) Condition: In a cloth binding. Externally sound, with some rubbing and marks to the boards. Both hinges are very tender, and held by cords only. Front joint has started but still firm. Wear to top and tail ofspine. Internally, generally firmly. Pages have scattered spotting. In need of a recase, but well worth it. Overall: GOOD ONLY..

Half- title, title, dedication to the Queen of the Netherlands and foreword in French, parallel text in French and English. 40 chromolithographed plates by P. Depannemaeker after Hoola van Nooten. Original printed paper boards, rebacked and recornered to style. Third, and improved edition of this magnificent display of spectacular Javanese fruits and flowers, their bright colours ideally suited to the then new technique of chromolithography. 'Europeans who beheld these plants for the first time... could not but have been moved to wonder and amazement' ('Oak Spring Flora') Berthe Hoola van Nooten (1840-1885), a latter-day Maria Sibylla Merian, produced the present work as a heroic response to circumstances which left her on Java, a widow in her early twenties with a family to support and little money, certainly not enough to pay for her family's passage home to Belgium. 'Aware of the vogue in Europe for exotic flora, she decided to take advantage of her enforced exile and put to use the skill at flower painting that she had no doubt acquired as a girl. Thus she prepared forty magnificent plates for Fleurs, fruits et feuillages choisis de l'Ile de Java... [van Nooten] was clearly a more than competent artist, for the splendid tropical plants, with their lush foliage, vividly coloured flowers and exotic fruit, have been depicted with great skill. She managed to accentuate the splendour of each species by adopting a style that combined great precision and clarity with a touch of neo-Baroque exuberance, revelling in the rich forms and colours of the tropics. The reader's eye is immediately captured by the dark leaves, shown furled or crumpled or partly nibbled away by insects, the delicately rendered details of the follicles and seeds, and the heavy clusters of flowers that cascade down the page. The excellent reproduction of the artist's drawings in the form of chromolithographs lends an added tactility to these striking images' (Oak Spring Flora) The work consists of a lithographed dedication (in rhyme) to the Queen of the Netherlands. This is followed by a preface in which the author hints at the tragic personal circumstances which led her to seek a publisher for the work, and the forty plates, each of which is accompanied by detailed text in French and English giving a description as well as occasional information on the plants' culinary, medical, religious and other uses. The plates depict a mixture of indigenous, naturalised and introduced plants and include shrubs, flowering trees and, perhaps the most striking of all, 16 portraits of plants with edible fruits: pomelo, rambutan, mangosteen, custard-apple, bread-fruit, mango, bananas, star-fruit and papaya amongst others. Of the 20 or so of Froebel's "Gifts & Occupations", 3 are represented in this album: "Weaving" [the 14th gift];"Folding" [the 18th gift]; & "Cutting" [the 13th gift]. The album contains 48 woven glazed black & white paper panels of various intricate designs, each approx. 4 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches, mounted 4 per-page; 4 sets of folded purple paper work, or origami, 80 examples in all, mounted to 9 of the album leaves; 14 leaves of cut paper work; and 5 leaves of strip folded paper designs. A remarkable album that must have taken many hundreds of hours in its execution. 4to ( 12 x 9 3/4 inches), contemporary half black morocco; joints split but firm, backstrip very chipped. Original blue-grey cloth decorated in black and gilt, all edges gilt. <p>First British Edition of one of Verne&#39;s odder tales... Wealthy Chinaman hears that his fortune is lost. Opts for honorable suicide by arranging for a friend to kill him. Learns that his fortune isn&#39;t lost after all. Tells friend thanks but there is no need to kill him. Friend replies that he has already arranged for some thug to do the deed and now can&#39;t contact him...</p> <p>This Verne title is also unusual in that all three early publishers of this tale, on both sides of the Atlantic, ultimately published it in the exact same cloth binding (showing several characters "afloat on their backs, propelled by the wind caught in minisails attached to toe-masts, controlled by waistband halyards" [T&M]).</p> <p>The first edition in English was published in September 1879 by Lee & Shepard of Boston, translated by Virginia Champlin and unillustrated, both in wrappers and in plain cloth. By November, George Munro then published it in wrappers in his Seaside Library. About a year later (October 1880), Dutton of New York published the tale from the British plates (a different translation, by Ellen Frewer) -- with fifty full-page illustrations from the original French edition, and in the binding designed by Sampson Low. In November Sampson Low published it in England (perhaps waiting to make it a holiday offering). Finally, a year after this (September or October 1881) Lee & Shepard re-published the Champlin translation but with the fifty illustrations that had appeared in the Dutton and Sampson Low editions, and in the same binding they had used.</p> <p>This copy is in light blue-grey cloth (the only color in which we have seen the Sampson Low edition, just once before), and is in near-fine condition (wear limited to one little spot on the front joint). Although this is an example of the ill-conceived early-80s experiment of binding with staples rather than with string, this copy has held together remarkably well. Altmann coined the term "nucleic acid ," which he introduced in his 1889 paper "Ueber Nucleins?en," and developed a convenient and general method for its preparation. His work on nucleic acids represents an early stage in the development of molecular biology. Altmann was a student of Johann Friedrich Miescher, who in 1869 discovered a hitherto unknown substance in the cell nucleus that he named nuclein; we now know it as DNA. Altmann worked with Miescher at Miescher's institute in Basel, called the "Vesalianum" after the great 16th-century anatomist. At the time Miescher was performing biochemical investigations of salmon sperm, from which he had succeeded in isolating protamine, an important constituent of spermatazoa. However, Miescher "fell into an error: he detected purine bases in the protamine he had isolated by the murexide reaction, no doubt caused by contamination with adhering DNA. Later, Miescher requested that [his associate] Piccard re-investigate this question. Piccard also detected purine bases in the acid extract of spermatozoa from which protamine was isolated. However, he concluded (correctly) that nuclein also contained purine bases. This confusion was not resolved until R. Altmann in 1889 separated protein (free of purine bases) from nuclein (called by him nucleic acid), containing xanthine bases" (Wolf). Our copy of Altmann's paper on nucleic acid bears the stamp of Miescher's Vesalianum, as does the third offprint in the collection, a paper on the theory of imaging. The photos are in very nice condition. A few with a little fading. No foxing.. A photo album depicting Rome as well as its ruins and art works. Each photo has a caption in the negative below the image. The first photo has a barely visible stamp by the photographer Olivieri. Presumably, also the rest of the photographs are by Olivieri since they all are in the same style. Olivieri had two photo studios and a binding service in Rome. He managed to be metioned in the 1890 edition of the all important Baedeker guide. The competition among photographers in Rome for the tourist trade was fierce. To be mentioned in the Baedeker guide was very important

"Grosart, Alexander Balloch (1827-1899), literary scholar and theologian...Grosart's reputation was as a great Elizabethan and Jacobean scholar. He reprinted thirty-nine volumes under the general title of the Fuller Worthies Library (1868-76), including authors such as Donne, Herbert, and Crashaw. This was followed by eighteen volumes of another series entitled Occasional Issues of Unique and very Rare Books (1875-83), which was privately printed. This series, like the others, included a list of the subscribers to each volume, alphabetically and democratically arranged, and found among these lists were such well-known names as Edmund Gosse, George Saintsbury, A. C. Swinburne, H. H. Furness, F. S. Palgrave, and Henry Morley....Grosart reprinted and edited volumes for the Chetham Society, for the Roxburghe Club, and for the Camden Society, in addition to a number of volumes not associated with any series or society. One estimate puts the total number of volumes he reprinted and/or edited at 300. He also added to his editions of the works of the puritan divines a small number of religious publications. And he was himself the author of hymns and religious poems which were collected and published in 1890 under the title Songs of the Day and Night, or, Three Centuries of Original Hymns. Possibly his proudest moment was when he was thanked by Tennyson for his dedication to the poet of his edition of Spenser (Letters of ... Tennyson, 3.298, 301-3)." (DNB)

A fabulous book of nonsense rhymes printed by the DALZIEL BROTHERS AT THE CAMDEN PRESS. Printed on one side of the paper, each recto features an incredibly unusal and boldly colored picture highlighted in gold, beneath which is a nonsense rhyme. Facing pages are broadsides expanding upon the histories of the various characters. There was a king called HAKKI-PAK Who wore his coat upon his back But his subjects who were many Had not any. The illustrations are stunning and the book is extremely unusual and creative.

From 1861 to 1868 Robert Russ attended Albert Zimmermann's class on landscape painting at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts and taught in place of his teacher from 1870 to 1871. The artist went on numerous journeys to Italy, Germany, The Netherlands and Belgium. He typically paints scenes of the Austrian Alps. He regularly participated in exhibitions, for instance in the Künstlerhaus Vienna. In addition he received several tributes. From 1870 to 1871 lectured on landscape painting at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts whose honorary member he became in 1888. Robert Russ exhibited five paintings at the World Exhibition of 1873. In the 1880s numerous museums ordered paintings and Robert Russ had international success. He painted, for instance, landscapes for the Imperial Theatre and the Museum of Natural History. Robert Russ was befriended with Emil-Jakob Schindler, Eugen Jettel and Rudolf Ribarz. His early landscape paintings resemble those of Schindler and Jettel. Russ painted in South Tyrol, Italy and in the Austrian alpine lands. His paintings capture the change of colours that goes along with the different times of the day and seasons of the year. He was called "master of the lighting effect" by his contemporaries. Si vende in cornice.

A fact that still applies today... the work somewhat uncommon on the commercial market, especially in collectible condition as is this copy; ABPC shows 1995 the last one to auction. .       Brussels and Leipzig: Librairie Européenne C. Muquardt, [No date on title, but with a foreword dated 1880]. Folio. (21 7/8 x 15 3/4 inches). Half- title, title, dedication to the Queen of the Netherlands and foreword in French, parallel text in French and English. 40 chromolithographed plates by P. Depannemaeker after Hoola van Nooten. Original printed paper boards, rebacked and recornered to style. Third, and improved edition of this magnificent display of spectacular Javanese fruits and flowers, their bright colours ideally suited to the then new technique of chromolithography. 'Europeans who beheld these plants for the first time... could not but have been moved to wonder and amazement' ('Oak Spring Flora') Berthe Hoola van Nooten (1840-1885), a latter-day Maria Sibylla Merian, produced the present work as a heroic response to circumstances which left her on Java, a widow in her early twenties with a family to support and little money, certainly not enough to pay for her family's passage home to Belgium. 'Aware of the vogue in Europe for exotic flora, she decided to take advantage of her enforced exile and put to use the skill at flower painting that she had no doubt acquired as a girl. Thus she prepared forty magnificent plates for Fleurs, fruits et feuillages choisis de l'Ile de Java... [van Nooten] was clearly a more than competent artist, for the splendid tropical plants, with their lush foliage, vividly coloured flowers and exotic fruit, have been depicted with great skill. She managed to accentuate the splendour of each species by adopting a style that combined great precision and clarity with a touch of neo-Baroque exuberance, revelling in the rich forms and colours of the tropics. The reader's eye is immediately captured by the dark leaves, shown furled or crumpled or partly nibbled away by insects, the delicately rendered details of the follicles and seeds, and the heavy clusters of flowers that cascade down the page. The excellent reproduction of the artist's drawings in the form of chromolithographs lends an added tactility to these striking images' (Oak Spring Flora) The work consists of a lithographed dedication (in rhyme) to the Queen of the Netherlands. This is followed by a preface in which the author hints at the tragic personal circumstances which led her to seek a publisher for the work, and the forty plates, each of which is accompanied by detailed text in French and English giving a description as well as occasional information on the plants' culinary, medical, religious and other uses. The plates depict a mixture of indigenous, naturalised and introduced plants and include shrubs, flowering trees and, perhaps the most striking of all, 16 portraits of plants with edible fruits: pomelo, rambutan, mangosteen, custard-apple, bread-fruit, mango, bananas, star-fruit and papaya amongst others.
