        Lilium longiflorum, var eximium

London 1880 - Henry John Elwes (1846-1922) was a British botanist, naturalist and author, celebrated for his travels throughout Asia, including the Himalayan Mountains, with the Geographical Section of the British Association and noted for his collection of lily specimens. In 1880 Elwes published a spectacular collection of prints depicting various species of one of the world's favorite flowers, the lily. The “Monograph of the Genus Lilium” is the result of a collaborative effort, the organization and text by Elwes and the images by renowned botanical illustrator Walter Hood Fitch. Although Fitch's drawings for Elwes' “Genus Lilium” were the last great works of his career, in his lifetime, Fitch produced nearly 10,000 illustrations. This hand-colored folio size lithograph, Lilium longiflorum, var. eximium, measures 21.75” x 14.75” and is in mint condition. This lily, commonly known as the Easter Lily, is richly colored with a vibrant green stem and leaves and large white flowers with yellow stamen. The flowers are illustrated at different angles, as they would on a real plant. In addition to the flower, sections of the bulb and root and a sketch-like drawing of the plant in its entirety add a scientific aspect to this magnificent lithograph.

Original signed letter sent from China byAmerican Plantation Owner and Diplomat William Henry Trescot offering gifts of Chinese embroidery from the Imperial Palace, to Secretary of State William M. Evarts and his wife

Manuscript Signed Letter, circa 1880-1881, penned by South Carolina's influential diplomat William Henry Trescot, commissioner on the China Treaty of 1880, addressed to Mrs. William Evarts, wife of Secretary of State William M. Evarts, in which he is presenting gifts of Chinese embroidery "made and used only in the Imperial Palace" which he acquired firsthand from the Chinese Royal Court during diplomatic negotiations. 8vo. Double-leaf watermarked stationery, measuring approximately 3.5 x 5 inches. Very good condition. Trescot had worked for Evarts in China in 1880 on a commission to modify the Treaty of 1868 by restricting the immigration of Chinese laborers into the US. The intense pressure to reduce the number of Chinese laborers felt by the members of the commission had come primarily from American labor on the Pacific coast. Trescot and the other commissioners were greeted cordially by the Chinese government. Extremely reluctant to change the terms of the treaty, the demand to reduce the number of immigrants was seen by China as an offensive discrimination, they eventually capitulated. [The Treaty of 1880 stipulated that the restriction "shall only apply to Chinese laborers, other classes not being included in the limitation".] The recipient, William M. Evarts was, at the time of this correspondence, Secretary of State in Rutherford Birchard Hayes' administration, and chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on the Library. This letter was written upon Trescot's return to the US, before being sent to Chile only months later. Excerpts from the letter: "During my stay in Peking, I had an opportunity which rarely occurs, to get some embroideries made and used only in the Imperial Palace." "... they will remind Mr. Evarts at Windsor [Vermont] not only of my personal feeling but of the policy..." "one of them is a full length of a Manchu Princess... the robe is as perfect as the one worn - " "the other is a group of chrysanthemums arranged in the shape of a Chinese character which means Health and Prosperity..." End Excerpts Trescot was an aristocratic South Carolinian whose plantations afforded him leisure for scholarship, travel and service to his country. He was despatched by the US government on a mission to China, then to Chile and Mexico. He was instrumental in advocating for South Carolina planters for the return of their lands, immediately following the American Civil War [In 1865 President Johnson reversed Sherman's Field Order 15 by ordering that virtually all plantation lands given to freed slaves be returned to the original plantation owners]. .

[two lines in Hebrew, then] Liber psalmorum. Textum masoreticum acuratissime expressit ... notis criticis confirmavit S. Baer. Praefatus est edendi operis adjutor Franciscus Delitzsch

Lipsiae: Ex officina Bernhardi Tauchnitz 8vo (22.4 cm, 8.8"). [1] f., 82 pp.; manuscript notes bound in.. 1880 This "textum masoreticum" book of psalms, i.e., the traditional Hebrew text, was edited by masoretic scholar Seligman Baer (1825–97) and theologian Franz Delitzsch (1813–90) as part of their Masoretic Bible series, published by Tauchnitz between 1869 and 1895. A truly => unique copy, this particular volume is thickly interleaved with variously sized sheets and tabs containing the fastidious manuscript notes of published author => Walter Robert Betteridge, D.D. (1863–1916), a notable faculty member in the Old Testament Department of the Rochester Theological Seminary who swathed page after page in minute inked marginalia, and added yet more bulk with clippings from related texts — annotated, of course. Among the doctor's publications was an article on "The Accuracy of the Authorized Version of the Old Testament" (1911), including the Hebrew psalms. Provenance: Donated by Mrs. Betteridge to the seminary library, with institutional bookplate noting this on rear pastedown. Recent black moiré silk, spine with gilt-stamped leather title-label. Ex-library with bookplate on rear pastedown as above, pressure-stamp on title-page, call number in lower margin of second leaf; paper brittle, dust- or sometimes soot-soiled(?) at edges, and prone to chipping. Replete with scholia, this is => a stunning testament to one scholar's study of the O.T.

        Lilium tigrinum

Henry John Elwes (1846-1922) was a British botanist, naturalist and author, celebrated for his travels throughout Asia, including the Himalayan Mountains, with the Geographical Section of the British Association and noted for his collection of lily specimens. In 1880 Elwes published a spectacular collection of prints depicting various species of one of the world's favorite flowers, the lily. The ?Monograph of the Genus Lilium? is the result of a collaborative effort, the organization and text by Elwes and the images by renowned botanical illustrator Walter Hood Fitch. Although Fitch's drawings for Elwes' ?Genus Lilium? were the last great works of his career, in his lifetime, Fitch produced nearly 10,000 illustrations. This hand-colored folio size lithograph, Lilium tigrinum, measures 21.75? x 15? and is in mint condition. This lily, commonly known as the Tiger Lily, is richly colored with a pale stem but vibrant green leaves and decorative red-orange flowers and stamen. The flowers are illustrated in many states of bloom. In addition to the flower, sections of the bulb and root and a sketch-like drawing of the plant in its entirety add a scientific aspect to this magnificent lithograph.

        Delta de Mississippi

Madrid: Published by the Spanish Admiralty, 1880. Engraving. Printed on wove paper. In excellent condition. Image size: 24 x 37 1/4 inches. A wonderful sea chart of the Mississippi Delta produced by the Spanish Admiralty at the close of the nineteenth century. This is an impressive sea chart of the Mississippi Delta produced by the Spanish Admiralty in 1880. The coast line is clearly mapped out with little detailing except for the soundings around the Delta. There are two compasses and a number of lighthouses identified along the shoreline. The chart uses the surveys conducted by the U. S. Coast Survey, which were carried out between 1853 and 1877. It is a wonderful chart of this important area and superb collector's piece for anyone interested in early maps of the Americas.

The Unanimous Declaration of the Thirteen United States of America in Congress. [Benjamin Tyler-Giles Lithograph printing of the Declaration of Independence]

Durham and New York: The Giles Lithographic and Liberty Printing Co. for Mess. W. Duke, Sons & Company, 1880. Broadside. Very Good. Lithographic print on parchment. Approximately 20.5" x 27". Original metal trim still present at top and bottom. Minor edge wear. Three professionally repaired short marginal tears. Small wrinkles at lower margin. This print of the Declaration of Independence is of the famous facsimile originally published by Benjamin Owen Tyler, a self-taught calligrapher, in 1818. Tyler's documents were the first to produce the Declaration in script and included amazing facsimile signatures of the signers. "The publisher designed and executed the ornamental writing, and has been particular to copy the Facsimiles exact, and has also observed the same punctuation, and copied every Capital as in the original. . . . [The signatures] are curiously exact imitations, so much so that it would be difficult if not impossible for the closest scrutiny to distinguish them . . . from the original." (Bidwell, 1989) Tyler's documents are among the most sought after printings of the Declaration and over the last ten years have sold for between $7,500 and $35,000. As noted by Bidwell, the Giles lithographs are the only exact reproductions of Tyler's work. These were produced as premiums for Duke tobacco products and could only be obtained by collecting certificates from 75 packets of Duke products. As such these lithographs are scarcer than the Tyler originals. As of 2014, no examples are listed in OCLC, and Bidwell only found one example at the New York Public Library as well as a photostat reproduction at the American Antiquarian Society. Between ABPC, AE, and Worthpoint, only two examples are shown as ever having been sold at auction; one for $1,024 in 2009 and one for $7,995 in 2011.
