        Fourteen Months in Canton

London.: Macmillan.. 1880.. Black and white line illustrations, 444pp + 43 pages of publisher's advertisements at rear. Some light spotting, half title diagonal crease. Little wear extremities, upper cover creased, 19th century inscription front free endpaper. Good copy of a scarce title. The author whose husband John Henry Gray, was at the time of the book?'s publication Archdeacon of Hong Kong, was resident in Canton for the 14 month period between April 1877 and May 1878. Archdeacon Gray had been Chaplain to the British community from 1851 until he left Canton in 1878. Their residence must have been in the parsonage to Christ Church, Shameen, in the British concession hard by the Chinese City, opened after the Anglo-French China War of 1860. Mrs Gray was stimulated by what she saw around her. Her lively, detailed letters to her mother which form the text of this book give a fascinating picture of China and the Chinese in Canton and surrounding areas at the time. That Mrs Gray was unusually open minded is immediately evident on reading these letters, and not surprisingly she found herself to be rather one of a kind in European circles, remarking as she does to her mother in one letter: "I have not mentioned my early morning ramble in the city to any of the European community. I fear they may think me strong-minded; and what is the use of speaking of these things to those who take no interest in the manners and customs of the singular people among whom they dwell?" Archdeacon Gray was the author of Walks in the City of Canton, published in Hong Kong in 1875, and of the two-volume China, A History of the Laws, Manners, and Customs of the People, like Mrs Gray?'s book also published by Macmillan in London in 1878. He was therefore very knowledgeable about Canton and the Chinese people, and his knowledge of the city must have been very useful to his wife. She is, however, an important, though neglected, writer in her own right. A charming, female eye-witness account. (JH, 2014). .

Rare Civil War Book Collection offered for sale:"The War of the Rebellion: A Compilation of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies" (commonly called "The Official Records"), published by the Government Printing Office, 1880-1901. 128 volumes. This complete set is the original GPO issuance (published in the late 1800?s); however, the books were re-bound some time prior to 1980. Binding is leather with gilt. The volumes are in very good condition; a few show discoloration on some page edges and there is minor cracking on a few of the bindings. Those labels have the correct volume information for those mis-labeled volumes.)The owners of this collection purchased the set in 1982 from Glenn Books, Inc., an antiquarian book store, which was located in downtown Kansas City, Missouri. Since that time the books have been shelved in the owner?s library and kept in pristine condition.Specific information about the contents of these volumes can be seen at the Cornell University website: volumes feature correspondence, reports, communications and accounts of the American Civil War.         Views of Nizhniy-Novgrorod.

s 1880 - 13 albumen prints (from app. 11 x 15 cm to 16 x 22 cm): 3 by Dmitriev, 9 by Karelin, photographer's credits printed on all cards apart from one; fair tonal range, some spotting to cards, repaired marginal tear to one card. Collection of views by two award-wining photographers - Dmitriev (1858 - 1948) and Karelin (1837 - 1906), who almost single-handedly created an image of XIX century Nizhniy-Novgorod. By the mid-19th century, Nizhny-Novgorod was firmly established as the trade capital of the Russian Empire. The all-Russia industrial and art exhibition was held in Nizhny Novgorod in 1896. Other industries gradually developed, and by the dawn of the 20th century it was a first-rank industrial hub as well. Henry Ford helped build a large truck and tractor plant (GAZ) in the late 1920s, sending along engineers and mechanics, including future labour leader Walter Reuther Famous writer Maxim Gorky was born there in 1868. During his lifetime, the city was renamed Gorky following his return to the Soviet Union in 1932 on invitation of Joseph Stalin. The city bore his name until 1991. During that time, the city was closed to foreigners to safeguard the security of Soviet military research. An end to the "closed" status of the city has accompanied the reinstatement of the city's original name in 1990.

A book from the James Garfield library, name and date-stamped one month before winning the Presidential election and undoubtedly used in his short term. An incredible Presidential book rarity

"The first Presidential memorial library, completed at the Lawnfield estate in Ohio by the widow of James Garfield four years after his assassination, houses almost 3,000 books that were used and treasured by the 20th president. Books were a rare commodity to young James, who lost his father before the age of two, and was raised by his mother who struggled to maintain a humble existence. Both James Garfield and his wife Lucretia were voracious readers and amassed a large collection of books. Some twenty years ago, several dozen of his books were de-accessioned, and one of these scarce books is described below:The Agricultural Progress of The Nation in Cheapening the Food of America and Europe, examined by Samuel B. Ruggles; Henry Bessey, Publisher, New York 1880. Tall folio, 31 pps. With a 19 page appendix and a tipped-in, hand colored, fold-out map of the United States on back free end paper. Stamped, ? J.A. Garfield / Oct 6 1880? on the front free end paper. Light scuffs and soiling to exterior. Interior toned with foxing and minor worming to endpapers, else near fine condition. In October, 1880, James Garfield was a Congressman from Ohio and the Republican candidate for President. He would win the presidential election one month later. This book of facts and figures would have held great interest to Garfield. In a speech he delivered to the House of Representatives in 1869 regarding census information, Garfield declared, ?The developments of statistics are causing history to be rewritten. Till recently, the historian studied nations in the aggregate, and gave us only the story of princes, dynasties, sieges, and battles...Now statistical inquiry leads him into the hovels, homes, workshops, mines, fields...and all other places where human nature displays its weakness and its strength. In these explorations he discovers the seeds of national growth and decay, and thus becomes the prophet of his generation...? Garfield no doubt would have noted the reference to the impending presidential election on page 21, ?It would be idle to expect any wholesome and efficient legislation on the subject of our agricultural necessities during the feverish excitement of the present season, when the nation is passing through the periodical and constitutionally recurring quadrennial distemper attending the genesis of a President, so utterly demoralizing and distracting the swarms of partisan politicians of every grade and stripe hovering around, and some of them actually finding their way into,...the forty-eight legislative halls between the two oceans. When the present heated term shall have passed away...the farmers of our country...might do wisely to...examin[e] the immense agricultural statistics...They might also...much facilitate the proper distribution of the great bodies of agricultural immigrants, now landing weekly by tens of thousands in our seaports, forming, historically, a part of what a far-seeing political writer of our age so grandly depicts as ?the great procession of nations, incessantly crossing the Atlantic, with the solemnity, dignity and certainty of a providential event.??"

Kusakabe was the great Japanese commercial photographer of the nineteenth century. There is a direct relationship between the work of Beato, Stillfried and Kusakabe which is the culmination of a cross-cultural view of Japan during the period. It is probable that Kusakabe began as Stillfried's operator, eventually buying his stock when the latter departed from Japan in the mid 1880s. He operated his own firm until 1912, when he disappeared from view. Kusakabe's speciality was his penetrating studio portraits of the Japanese sitter.

Ogni tavola conservale veline originali.

London 1880 - Henry John Elwes (1846-1922) was a British botanist, naturalist and author, celebrated for his travels throughout Asia, including the Himalayan Mountains, with the Geographical Section of the British Association and noted for his collection of lily specimens. In 1880 Elwes published a spectacular collection of prints depicting various species of one of the world's favorite flowers, the lily. The “Monograph of the Genus Lilium” is the result of a collaborative effort, the organization and text by Elwes and the images by renowned botanical illustrator Walter Hood Fitch. Although Fitch's drawings for Elwes' “Genus Lilium” were the last great works of his career, in his lifetime, Fitch produced nearly 10,000 illustrations. This hand-colored folio size lithograph, Lilium longiflorum, var. eximium, measures 21.75” x 14.75” and is in mint condition. This lily, commonly known as the Easter Lily, is richly colored with a vibrant green stem and leaves and large white flowers with yellow stamen. The flowers are illustrated at different angles, as they would on a real plant. In addition to the flower, sections of the bulb and root and a sketch-like drawing of the plant in its entirety add a scientific aspect to this magnificent lithograph.

Original signed letter sent from China byAmerican Plantation Owner and Diplomat William Henry Trescot offering gifts of Chinese embroidery from the Imperial Palace, to Secretary of State William M. Evarts and his wife

Manuscript Signed Letter, circa 1880-1881, penned by South Carolina's influential diplomat William Henry Trescot, commissioner on the China Treaty of 1880, addressed to Mrs. William Evarts, wife of Secretary of State William M. Evarts, in which he is presenting gifts of Chinese embroidery "made and used only in the Imperial Palace" which he acquired firsthand from the Chinese Royal Court during diplomatic negotiations. 8vo. Double-leaf watermarked stationery, measuring approximately 3.5 x 5 inches. Very good condition. Trescot had worked for Evarts in China in 1880 on a commission to modify the Treaty of 1868 by restricting the immigration of Chinese laborers into the US. The intense pressure to reduce the number of Chinese laborers felt by the members of the commission had come primarily from American labor on the Pacific coast. Trescot and the other commissioners were greeted cordially by the Chinese government. Extremely reluctant to change the terms of the treaty, the demand to reduce the number of immigrants was seen by China as an offensive discrimination, they eventually capitulated. [The Treaty of 1880 stipulated that the restriction "shall only apply to Chinese laborers, other classes not being included in the limitation".] The recipient, William M. Evarts was, at the time of this correspondence, Secretary of State in Rutherford Birchard Hayes' administration, and chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on the Library. This letter was written upon Trescot's return to the US, before being sent to Chile only months later. Excerpts from the letter: "During my stay in Peking, I had an opportunity which rarely occurs, to get some embroideries made and used only in the Imperial Palace." "... they will remind Mr. Evarts at Windsor [Vermont] not only of my personal feeling but of the policy..." "one of them is a full length of a Manchu Princess... the robe is as perfect as the one worn - " "the other is a group of chrysanthemums arranged in the shape of a Chinese character which means Health and Prosperity..." End Excerpts Trescot was an aristocratic South Carolinian whose plantations afforded him leisure for scholarship, travel and service to his country. He was despatched by the US government on a mission to China, then to Chile and Mexico. He was instrumental in advocating for South Carolina planters for the return of their lands, immediately following the American Civil War [In 1865 President Johnson reversed Sherman's Field Order 15 by ordering that virtually all plantation lands given to freed slaves be returned to the original plantation owners]. .
