New York: Im Verlage von W. L. Rosenberg (Wilhelm Ludwig Rosenberg). Erste Separatausgabe.. Wilhelm Ludwig "William" Rosenberg (1850-unknown, 1930s) was a German-American teacher, poet, playwright, journalist, and socialist political activist. He is best remembered as the head of the Socialist Labor Party of America from 1884 to 1889. Wilhelm Ludwig Rosenberg was born in Hamm, Westphalia, Germany in January 1850. Rosenberg was university educated, and worked as a teacher of Latin and French in Frankfurt am Main. Rosenberg was politically radical from an early age and was a contributor to Die Neue Welt (The New World), a German socialist newspaper. Rosenberg was forced to emigrate from Germany in 1880 under the pressure of the Anti-Socialist Laws of 1878, landing in America. Rosenberg resumed life as a teacher in Boston and joined the fledgling Socialist Labor Party of America (SLP). Rosenberg subsequently moved to Chicago, where he served as editor of a succession of politically oriented newspapers, including Die Fackel (Sunday edition of the Chicagoer Arbeiter-Zeitung, 1881-1884), the SLP's official organ, Der Sozialist (1885?-1889), Der Tramp (New York, 1888), and Vorwärts, (New York City, from 1892). (Wikipedia) While in Chicago, Rosenberg wrote politically charged plays to be performed in the several working-class theatres of the city.[7] One of these dramas, Die Nihilisten (The Nihilists), was performed in honor of the Paris Commune in 1882 and featured three future defendants in the 1886 Haymarket affair — Michael Schwab, August Spies, and Oscar Neebe — playing leading roles.[7] The play dealt with legal proceedings against a group of Nihilists in Tsarist Russia, who were sentenced to exile in Siberia, and finally freed by their comrades following the overthrow of the Tsar.[8] In the May 18, 1882 performance in North Side Turner Hall, the role of the liberators was played by members of the local Lehr-und-Wehr Verein (Education and Defense Society), an armed workers' militia movement sweeping the German-American radical community in the Chicago area at the time.[8] The implications of this casting could not be missed. Another play by Rosenberg, Die Tochter des Proletairiers (The Proletarian's Daughter) was performed at the 1883 celebration of the Paris Commune in Chicago.[8] This play dealt with the daughter of a class-conscious worker who fell in love with the son of a factory owner and was subsequently repudiated by her father.[8] By 1883 the membership of the SLP had fallen to an estimated 1500 members in just 30 Sections, a depressing atrophy which had led to the abandonment of the organization in April of that year even by its nominal head, Corresponding Secretary Philip Van Patten.[9] Two individuals filled the role on a temporary basis for the rest of the year, culminating in the party's 4th National Convention in December 1883. There the 16 delegates, in an effort to forge links with non-party revolutionary socialists in an effort to keep them out of the camp of the rival anarchist movement, decided to steer the organization on a leftward course, curtaining the authority of the governing National Executive Committee and abolishing the centralizing post of Corresponding Secretary altogether in an effort to render the SLP a more decentralized organization amenable to the revolutionary left.[10]

        Extracts from the Coran

London: Trübner & Co.,, 1880. In the original with English rendering. Octavo. Original brown cloth, titles to front board gilt, geometric border blind-stamped to top and bottom edges of boards, brown coated endpapers. Author's signature to front board in black ink, similar presentation inscription to half-title. Slightly rubbed with strip of mild cockling to front board, corners and ends of spine lightly bumped, edges lightly foxed. A very good copy. First edition of Muir's uncommon volume of extracts from the Qur'an, printed in Arabic with English translations. Presentation copy with no stated recipient but, unusually, an elaborate further inscription to the front board. Muir (1819-1905), orientalist employed by the Bengal civil service, states that he had originally intended to produce a trilingual work with renderings into Urdu as well, but was advised by his "Mahometan friends … that the very act of using extracts selected from it would be held a desecration". Here finally published, the author affirms that "There can be no better introduction to this noble tongue, than the eloquent lessons of the Prophet himself"; in his other works, notably his chef d'œuvre "Life of Mahomet and History of Islam to the Era of the Hegira" (London, 1858-61) and "The Coran: Its Composition and Teaching; And the Testimony it Bears to the Holy Scriptures" (London, 1878), Muir professes a similar sympathy for Muhammad but as an evangelical Christian cannot bring himself to credit Muhammad's divine calling, concluding instead that the Prophet was mentally deranged. Rather uncommon institutionally, with Copac giving eight copies in UK libraries and OCLC adding nine worldwide, and rare in commerce.

A BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF THE LIFE OF WILLIAM B. IDE: WITH A MINUTE AND INTERESTING ACCOUNT OF ONE OF THE LARGEST EMIGRATING COMPANIES. (3000 MILES OVER LAND), FROM THE EAST TO THE PACIFIC COAST. AND WHAT IS CLAIMED AS THE MOST AUTHENTIC AND RELIABLE ACCOUNT OF "THE VIRTUAL CONQUEST OF CALIFORNIA, IN JUNE, 1846, BY THE BEAR FLAG PARTY."

[Claremont, N.H.]: Printed for the subscribers, [1880]. - [2],239,[1]pp. Half title. 12mo. Original purple morocco, stamped in blind and gilt, rebacked at an early date, a.e.g. Very good. Provenance: E. Truman Ide (signature on half title and inked stamp on the final leaf). An Ide family association copy, with the ink stamp of E. Truman Ide of Denver on the front free endpaper and final leaf of text, and his signature (at Elgin, Illinois) on the half title. "This SKETCH contains an account of the early years of W.B. Ide, recollections by his daughter of the family's trip across the plains to California in 1845, and an account of the Bear Flag revolt of 1846 as told by Ide to his brother in 1849, and in a letter to a Senator Wambough which, as Ide died in 1852, must have been written within a few years of the event. [An] interesting account of the overland journey of 1845 and important source on the beginnings of American rule in California in 1846." - Streeter. The work is also important in that it is one of the few overland journals written from the point of view of a woman (Ide's daughter, who at eighteen accompanied her father west in 1845), and is unique in its exclusive treatment of the Bear Flag Revolt. Howes speculates that this first edition, printed by the author at the age of eighty-six on a handpress, "was probably small." A rare and important California book. HOWES I4, "b." STREETER SALE 2967.         Der Wanderer und Sein Schatten (The Wanderer and His Shadow)

Chemnitz: Schmeitzner, 1880. First edition. Very Good +/none. NIETZSCHE, Friedrich. Der Wanderer und Sein Schatten (The Wanderer and His Shadow). Schmeitzner, Chemnitz , 1880. TP + [3]-185 + [186] + [I]-XVII = advertisements, Octavo. First Edition, First Issue. Schaberg 32.Written as a second sequel to Human All Too Human, The Wanderer and his Shadow was first published in the year following Nietzsches departure from academia. Perhaps the title here is somewhat autobiographical, reflecting Nietzsche and his shadow heading off into the wilderness of the unknown. Wanderer contains a series of aphorisms and is published on December 20, 1890. It is received enthusiastically by Nietzsches friends, though fails to sell more than 200 copies. Yet, it was viewed by Nietzsche himself as a triumph. "In a letter to Schmeitzner written on December 18, Nietzsche remarks: "Der vollendete 'Wanderer' ist mir fast etwas Unglaubliches... [The completed 'Wanderer' is to me something almost unbelievable... The entire 'humanity' with the 2 supplements is from a time of the most bitter and continual pains - and yet seems to me to be a thing full of health. This is my triumph]"(The Nietzsche Chronicle).CONDITION: Contemporary quarter morocco with marbled boards, gilt trimmed. Title page with small triangular repair done with archival tape along inner edge. There were somewhere between 325 and 500 original copies in this state, rarely found separately bound in contemporary boards with the advertisements saved. A scarce copy of one of Nietzsches most penetrating books. PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. Contemporary quarter morocco with marbled boards, gilt trimmed. State "A" (no sequence established) of the sheets which bulk 1 3/8 inches. State "B" (no sequence established) of the binding stamping with border curved at inner edges. Blanck notes "that some copies have heavily blindstamped on the back cover, immediately below the publisher's device, a numeral: 0, 4, 7, 8, 88, have been observed", and this is one of them, stamped with the number "8". Blanck continues, saying "it is possible that each numeral identifies a specific agent (the book was sold by subscription) and was designed to permit detection of any agent who violated the publisher's rule which forbade the sale of copies to retail bookstores." Pasted to the front pastedown endpaper is a full sheet of the author's original manuscript, approximately 105 words. It is written in purple ink, has the addition of six words where parts of two lines were scored out by Clemens, and corrected page number. On the facing front free endpaper is a full-page autograph inscription by Merle Johnson in reference to the manuscript, and to the bibliography of the book, signed, in which he begins: "Opposite you see a page of the original Mss. of this book - I'm sure of that, but I've spent hours trying to locate the exact page." The exact page are pages 397-98.

[Archive and Scrapbook of Aerial Ballonist C W Williams of Williams & Young]

Various, ca. 1880-1890. Folio. Ornate commercial Victorian album. 43pp. on 22 leaves, all but last both recto and verso, covered with a variety of scrap - mostly newspaper clippings. Several dozen more clippings additionally loosely laid in. Also included: several promotional broadsides and a small selection of business documents (letterhead, promotional flyers, etc.) for Williams & Young's air show, several small original sketches by Williams, a 7pp. manuscript entirely in Williams' hand entitled "Biograph of the World Famous Aeronaut C. W. Williams," plus an additional 1+p. manuscript essay also by Williams on parachuting. Scrapbook fair condition only. Spine perished. Several leaves loose, toning through, and chipping to the edges. Overall, fragile. Manuscripts also worn and a bit fragile, but entirely legible. Remainder of documents very good. Though manned ballooning was pioneered in the late 18th century in Europe, it took longer to establish itself in the States. However, by the middle of the 1800s, ballooning was a popular American entertainment, featured both in circuses and other traveling shows, as well as in festivals and on its own. Here offered is an important archive of a pioneering aeronaut and a substantial record of 19th century ballooning, assembled by a prominent practitioner. Williams and Young were most active from the early 1880s through the early 1890s (when Young perished in a ballooning accident). The duo were best known for their "Parachute Jump For Life," in which Williams ascended to 5000 feet and parachuted to safety below. The duo were also purported to have the largest hot air balloon in the world at the time, some 50 feet high and 70 feet around. They worked throughout the country and on both sides of the Atlantic. The scrapbook portion of the archive covers not only the exploits of the compiler's own company, but also those of their fellow balloonists. Indeed, the clippings alone amount to an impressively comprehensive portrait of ballooning as it neared the end of its popularity (the Wright brothers first flight was 1903) - and demonstrates both Williams' love of aeronautics and his careful monitoring of his competition. Together with the manuscripts and business portions, a rare primary collection relating not only to early flight but to its business and promotion as well.

Michel Lévy 1880 - - Michel Lévy, Paris 1880, 15,5x23,5cm, relié. - Edition originale.

Original edition.Binding half old red grief with some discreet restorations, back with five nerves, when tail, paper plates to the tank, and contreplats combed guards lined paper, preserved covers, red head, then bindingPrecious autograph signed by Victor Hugo Alphonse Daudet.Buffer library of Madame Daudet on the first guard.Victor Hugo is for Alphonse Daudet, like other writers of his generation, the undisputed master of arts Hall of Fame. His father figure sprinkles the works of Daudet, commonly called alongside those of Rousseau, Byron, Sand and Delacroix. If during childhood and youth Daudet, Hugo, exiled giant on his island of Guernsey, remains an unattainable ideal, "almost beyond humanity," Back in France allows him to meet him someday. Around 1875, shortly after the publication of his first works, Alphonse Daudet and Julia are well received in Hugo who now lives with Juliette Drouet. They therefore become intimate of the house until the poet's death. Victor Hugo is involved in the education of the young Léon Daudet, best friend grand-son of Hugo, George and later husband of Jeanne ephemeral. In his Memories of a literary circle, Julia Daudet evokes friendship of ten years with the "idol of all France poetic""I see the great Victor Hugo end of his table; the old master, a bit isolated, a little deaf, sits with God silences, absences of a genius on the brink of immortality. The white hair, colored head, and this eye old lion that develops side with power ferocity; he listens to my husband and Catullus Mendes between which is very lively discussion about youth and celebrity known men and their attractiveness to women. [...] During the debate we went to the salon, Victor Hugo dream by the fire, and famous, universal and demigod regret perhaps his youth, while Mrs Drouet sleeping quietly. »The friendship between the last great romantic writer and one of the masters of the early naturalist school reflects the sharpness of Victor Hugo who, at the height of his fame, and retains a special kind attention for the remote yet modern literature Hugo's lyricism. This dedication Hugo Daudet on a skilled, with The Pope and The Supreme Pity, of "philosophical testament" by Henri Guillemin, symbolically resonates as a legacy by a devout follower of the political and moral responsibility of the writer.Provenance: Alphonse Daudet, sales Sickles (1990, IV, No. 1200) and Philippe Zoummeroff sale (2 April 2001).Gift extract of a literary circle by Julia Daudet:"How can we forget that first visit home, rue de Clichy, in the modest apartment so disproportionate to his glory, the idea we had of the glory that had filled palaces: He gets up the seat he occupied the fire in front of Madame Drouet, his old friend, (...) I am amazed at its size, but soon, when it will meet me and talk to me, I would find it very big, very intimidating. And this I felt so shy, I always try them in front of Victor Hugo, the result of this great admiration, respect it as an absent god, my parents instilled in me the genius of a poet. I will overcome never that trembling voice every time I answer his kind words, and I say astonish for nearly years to hear women, admitted to him, maintain their inner and their usual trivia. That night, when he had made me quite confused, Mrs Drouet, she said with a charming good grace - Here is the corner of the old and you are too young for us. But Victor Hugo will introduce you to his daughter, Mrs. Lockroy; alone has standing to that. And I was driving on the other side of the room, moderately large, though, but that was as divided in two by a table topped with a bronze elephant, very majestic, Japanese or Chinese, I think. It was enough to make two very distinct small groups that communicate easily, but without merging. At the time of his return, Victor Hugo was dazzling wit, many memories and told with an inexhaustible verve when the policy is not too invading his hospitable table. And grace in the home, what noble ways, what a beautiful smile grandfather in her hair I have gradually seen to blanch the snow eighty years I poets, all the poets attending this salon on Rue de Clichy, later the hotel Avenue d'Eylau. But here it was the change of place? There was like a step down in health, and in the spirit of good old man. Yet he always loved to entertain his friends, and the hospitality of this open house was not one of his charms least because, around the table, embellished with a piece by the two grandchildren of the Master, the guests were seeking their watchword in the eyes of the host, and he sometimes found a vein of memories so vivid, so picturesquely expressed, which remained blinded entire evening. M mo Drouet slowly growing old with him, sheltered under two snow bands, a somewhat theatrical elegance and quaint, until a ruthless evil dug his face so thin, made painful effigy has painted Bastien Lepage, who was to die prey to the same torture. In the recent times, the Master looked painfully, intimate dinners, that empty plate, that noble ravaged face.- Mrs Drouet, you do not eat, you must eat, have courage.Eat! She was dying. Did he know? Was he trying to delude himself the fine old so tough and strong, and who saw this companion from fifty years! In the large room where looks beautiful portrait of Bonnat, the paternal gesture, where the bust by David presides immensely; in the lounge, decorated with these striped multicolored tapestry that seemed strained to Dona Sol; in the garden come to the verandah by a flight of stairs two reappear Leconte de Lisle, Meurice and Vacquerie, Paul de Saint-Victor, smiling Banville, Flaubert and Goncourt conversing together, Mallarmé, Leon Cladel, Francois Coppe, Catullus Mendes, Clovis Hugues, shadows in a faded Eden; and Leon Glaize, Gustave Rivet, Pierre Elzéar, the tiny pink Ms Michelet offering a festive evening, and ambassadors, diplomats, Emperor of Brazil; painters, sculptors, and many politicians that I do not remember the names! Here the immediate impression that I drew one of those evenings when we visited, Alphonse Daudet and me, a snowy evening, where during the ride our horse fell three times across the Esplanade des Invalides:I see the great Victor Hugo end of his table; the old master, a bit isolated, a little deaf, sits with God silences, absences of a genius on the brink of immortality. The white hair, colored head, and this eye old lion that develops side with ferocity of power; he listens to my husband and Catullus Mendes between which is very lively discussion about youth and celebrity known men and their attractiveness to women. Alphonse claims that in a living room filled with all sorts of talents, of any age, a young man, the unknown author, the poet will ignored her female eyes beautiful it is. Catullus Mendes replied that he will initially unnoticed, and that all women will go to awareness: this seems true to me. Fortunately women do not have the eyes of their face, but those of the mind and heart. For the intellectual, the beauty of an artist, a poet does not count, it is the look of the thinker, the tormented face of the man who lives his feelings. They go to the talent, grief passes, they hardly thinking about physical beauty. Now one might reply that this is an ambitious sympathy they seek famous authors, but the other feeling, one that would attract to this tempting youth whose Alphonse speaks, seems less blameless. And I laugh to this claim of two charming conversationalists, generate, analyze us. But to say the woman is like saying the bird; there are so many species and genera, warbling and plumage are so different!During the debate we went to the salon, Victor Hugo dream by the fire, and famous, universal and demigod regret perhaps his youth, while Mrs Drouet sleeping quietly. His beautiful white hair shading his fine head like two wings of a dove, and knots of her bodice following her sweet breath, almost resigned, old woman asleep. It was soon after this event took place the great manifestation of scrolling Paris Avenue d'Eylau, before the windows of the small room that became mortuary in May 1885 filled with roses and simply furnished, such as accounts, museum Victor Hugo, a part taken in the former apartment of the poet, Place Royale.Although suggestive, the old home of the Marsh, "and when you think that there Victor Hugo wrote almost all his historical plays one imagines the poet, opening, the morning hours that were familiar to him, this high window on hotels all equal and same style, around the square, and remembering tournaments, duels, walks and agitations of several generations disappeared under the shadow of these ancient and solid arcades and not keeping track of the fugitive humanity. We still had dinner at Victor Hugo week before his death. He tells us by entering paler than usual, the inflected approach:- I will soon go, I feel it; and then relying on the shoulder of George: No 'that' a long time ago that I would be gone.I have never forgotten the focus rather solemn and as prophetic those words, I was imbued with sadness and foreboding; I felt the dispersion of this unique center and could not re ever! In particolare svariate località del Massachusetts (Weston, Charleston, Martha's Vineyard, Waltham), Indiana (Notre Dame), New Hampshire (Seabrook) e Ohio (Van Wert).

Provenienz: Sammlung Simon Ravenstein, Frankfurt a.M. Literatur: H. Thode, Thoma. Des Meisters Gemälde, Stuttgart/Leipzig, DVA, 1909, Abb. S. 156 unten.
