BEAUTIFUL SEAWEEDS Illustrated by natural specimens Also instructions for collecting and mounting marine Algae, and a list of all the British species

      J. & J. Cook. Paisley. 1880. LIMITED EDITION. Folio. (15.4 x 11.6 inches). One of just 30 copies with 42 specimens of Seaweed mounted onto pages among 90 leaves with printed text. The book calls for 40 specimens but this copy has an extra one as a frontispiece and another smaller one mounted onto the title page below the printed text. The title page is dated 1878 but a note from Cook printed on a whole leaf in the prelims is dated Christmas 1880. The note states that a previous edition of 50 copies was issued in smaller format with 35 specimens but that this larger volume is produced in smaller numbers; "Of copies on the size of page chosen for this volume, it will not be possible to issue more than a very limited number. For the few now prepared, the illustrations, forty in number, have been specially selected for their luxuriance of development and excellence of condition.". Bound in publisher full red morocco binding with ruled borders to the boards in gilt and blind, and with gilt corner decorations. Spine with raised bands, each decorated with gilt piping. Compartments triple ruled, decorated and lettered in gilt. Inner boards with double gilt ruled lines to the turn-ins. Floral endpapers. A few of the specimens have a very minor amount of loss to edges and they have offset a silhouette onto the opposite pages, as one would expect. Binding a little rubbed and bumped but overall a better than very good copy of this interesting and attractive work. ----- Rare. A search of Copac locates just one copy of this enlarged and superior edition which is in the Natural History Museum in London.

        On the Algebra of Logic.

University Press, Cambridge 1880 - American Journal of Mathematics, Volume III, Issue Number I. [15]-57, Quarto, 9½" x 12", First Edition Offprint (Ketner P00167).The Rare Offprint of On the Algebra of Logic.NOTE: On the Algebra of Logic lacks the original printed front wrapper. This is common - both Harvard and Brown note the lack of this brief title page ("Reprinted from the American Journal of Mathematics, vol. III") in their copies. In his 1880 paper On the Algebra of Logic, Peirce made a significant new addition to the theories he had begun exploring in his 1870 Description of a Notation for the Logic of Relatives (offered here separately), detailing the first definitions of logical addition and multiplication suitable for modern Boolean algebra. "These definitions were included in a section on the logic of non-relative terms, which is often regarded as the first presentation of Boolean algebra in its modern form." (Grattan-Guinness editor, Companion Encyclopedia of the History and Philosophy of the Mathematical Sciences, Volume 1, p. 608). This expanded Boolean algebra is in turn the basis for logic gates, and hence a basic conceptual building block for today's computers. In that regard, Peirce was almost clairvoyant. In 1886, he wrote a letter to Allan Marquand at Princeton noting in part "I think you should return to the problem, especially as it is by no means hopeless to expect to make a machine for really very difficult mathematical problems. But you would have to proceed step by step. I think electricity would be the best thing to rely on." (Writings of Charles S. Peirce 1884-1886, p. 422) Indeed! Missing the front cover which, as noted above, is uncommon even the copies found in the finest libraries. Some minor remnants remain along the left edge. Neatly trimmed top and bottom but deckled along the right edge. With several small chips to the preserved rear wrapper. Overall, an excellent copy of this rare and important offprint.         Autograph Letter Signed [to novelist George Manville Fenn]

1880. [an early literary letter] One leaf folded, with Hardy's own address in his hand "Trinity Road, Upper Tooting S.W." Two pages of text, addressed to "My dear Sir," signed "Yours very truly Thomas Hardy," and dated "Sept. 2" [no year but 1880]. The purpose of this early Hardy letter is accomplished in his first sentence: "You have my full permission to make what extracts you please." But the value of this letter is accomplished in the rest of Hardy's letter, in which he is open, personal and generous to another writer like himself -- who was self-educated, who shared the assiduous nature required to rise in the literary world from lowly beginnings, and who offered critical social commentary on Victorian England.~George Manville Fenn (1831-1909) would write some 160 novels (mostly historical tales of adventure for boys), beginning in 1864 when a tale of his caught the attention of one Charles Dickens. But he was also an editor (of Cassell's Magazine since the 1870s) -- and it was in this capacity that he had asked Hardy (on 31 August 1880) for permission to cite extracts from one or two of Hardy's works. But after giving his permission here, Hardy goes on to write:~I question if any one of them [Hardy's own passages to be cited] will affect your readers as I was affected by a fugitive piece of yours in the Graphic a short time ago -- on nightingales. I read it in the train on my way to the Continent -- and thought as I read how much I would like to know the writer -- till at the end I came by your name. I am so glad of this opportunity of expressing to you my sense of the intense pathos of that apparently simple article. The subject lingered with me all day.~The piece Hardy had read on board the train (the Hardys were en route to Normandy) was Fenn's "Nightingale Notes" in the Graphic's issue of 24 July. As implied by Hardy's words, this appears to be the first time Fenn and Hardy were in touch with each other.~The letter is in fine condition except for traces of prior mounting on the (blank) reverse side. Purdy & Millgate TH Collected Letters Vol. I, p. 79 (where much of the above background information on this letter is provided).

Lew Wallace, a Hoosier, was a prominent military man in the Mexican War and in the Civil War, during which he rose to the rank of major general. Thereafter he returned to Indiana to practice law and to write -- first in 1873 with THE FAIR GOD (regarding the Spanish conquest of Mexico), and then with BEN-HUR...~Against the background of the life of Jesus is told the story of Judah Ben-Hur, a Jewish patrician youth wrongly accused by his former friend Messala of attempting to kill the Roman governor of Judea. He is sent to the galleys for life, and his mother and sister are imprisoned. Escaping, Ben-Hur returns as a Roman officer, and enters the chariot race in which Messala has wagered heavily upon himself. Messala hopes to ruin Ben-Hur, but instead is seriously injured during the race. His cruelties are discovered, and he is slain by his wife Isas. Ben-Hur rescues his mother and sister, now hopeless lepers, and all three are converted to Christianity after the disease is cured through the intervention of Jesus. [OCAL]~BEN-HUR was successfully adapted for the stage by William Young in 1899, but is today best known for William Wyler's 1959 film starring Charlton Heston, one of the landmarks in movie history.~This copy properly has the date 1880 on the front of the title page, and the two-line dedication "To | the Wife of My Youth". (Copies without a dated title page, though frequently seen listed as first editions, are merely reprints.) Condition is fine (only the very slightest of rubbing at the extremities, spine just a shade faded); the light soil-prone cloth is, on this copy, unusually clean. The front free endpaper bears the signature of Rev. W. C. Hubbard (of the Niagara Falls area, where he was a trustee of DeVeaux College), dated Christmas 1880 (the month after publication). Blanck 20798; Wright III 5720. Housed in a fine morocco-backed slipcase with inner chemise.

Tagli colorati. History of the Donner Party; A Tragedy of the Sierra

      - San Francisco, A.L. Bancroft & Co., 1880, second illustrated edition. Very scarce, embossed blue cloth 8vo, 261pp. Ffe has a scuff mark about 3" long and about 1/4" wide, a very small book plate, and a few very small closed tears to edge. Verso of ffe and both sides of Bfe are lightly tanned. Tips are lightly scuffed on top, bottom tips are wearing through. Black ink? smudge on the spine cover. Spine top and bottom are scuffed to the headband, otherwise very tight and clean with only minor foxing to a few pages. Scans or further info available on request. Unlike the first edition, this very comprehensive second edition has 12 portraits of members of the infamous Donner Party (i.e. Reed Family, Breen Family, Donner Family, Graves Family, Stanton Family, and others) that was marooned in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in the winter of 1846-47. The party was beset with problems from the first; bad advice, bad decisions, Indian attacks, equipment breakdowns, and no real knowledge of what they were facing. Many perished, dying of hunger in one of the worst winters the Sierra had ever recorded. A fascinating look at the people and their travails. It is based on letters, journals, interviews and correspondence with the survivors. The REAL story. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Saddled camel with calf and owner

Smyrna: Rubellin, 1880 Albumen print with oval corners 17.2 x 20.0cm, pasted on original album leaf titled in ink in a contemporary hand Smyrna Turkey in Asia, preserved in an acid free mount. The bearded and turbaned trader stands in front of his camel with its calf behind in a cobbled and flag stoned street beside a building with five columns at the side with shuttered windows. In the background can be seen the rear of another camel and beyond an archway.Smyrna was one of the most important harbour settlements of Western Anatolia - the largest city of Asiatic Turkey and her greatest trade centre, and the second largest city of Turkey. The most mentioned issue by visitors are the camels that pass the lanes and narrow streets while carrying loads, Schubert wrote "When two camels came across in lanes, the one carrying less valuable load would sit down on its knees and the other one would jump over it. At this time, people on the streets would have to shelter in shops."Maison Rubellin had a studio in Smyrna at 120 rue Franque from the 1870?s where they advertised themselves as Photographie Parisienne. They produced some fine views of the entire area around Smyrna...another speciality was Types et Costumes de l?Asie Mineure."A photographer most likely of French origin, established his studio in Smyrna (Izmir), Turkey, in 1860, advertising his business as Photographie Parisienne. Rubellin specialized in views of Smyrna and surrounding areas, focusing on ancient ruins. The firm also produced studio portaits, portrayed the types and costumes of Asia Minor, and photographed Istanbul and Athens. When at least one of Rubellins sons joined the studio it became known as Rubellin père et fils, becoming Rubellin fils in 1900". Getty Research Institute
