Les Baisers précédés de mois de mai. Poème. Mit zahlreichen Stichen in doppelter Suite [Text Französisch].

Lemonnyer, Rouen 1880 - 1880. XXV, 106 Seiten, 48 Seiten. Salamanca, Antonio Ramires, 1609. 4to (19 x 14.5) . With a woodcut illustration of a man carrying Saint Francis across the Ganges River in India on the title-page and a woodcut centaur below the colophon. Vellum (ca. 1880).

Huth library (1880), p. 1523 (this copy); cf. Barbosa Machado, Bibliotheca Lusitana, I (1741), pp. 154-155 (the other 1609 Spanish ed.); not in KVK/WorldCat. The only known copy of what appears to be the first edition, in the original Spanish, of a legend of the miraculous appearance of Saint Francis of Assisi (ca. 1181/82-1226) in India, taken from a manuscript account by Andrés de Santa Maria in Goa, who was Bishop of Cochin from 1588 to 1615. The text gives an account of a miracle Saint Francis is said to have worked in Islamic Bengal. Although Saint Francis's travels never took him further east than Egypt and the Holy Land, he did succeed in improving Christian-Islamic relations soon after the Islamic conquest of Bengal. The present story was apparently related by a Bengali man said to be 380 years old. The man had been an Islamic beggar and was talking to a friend on the bank of the Ganges River when a Christian monk appeared and asked for help crossing the Ganges. The man picked up the monk in his arms and carried him across the holy river. On the other bank the monk revealed himself as Saint Francis of Assisi and rewarded the man with youth, good health, black hair and a good character to the end of his days. There are two Spanish editions, both published in Salamanca and dated 1609, each known only from a single surviving copy, but the order of their publication remains uncertain. From the library of one of the greatest collectors of all time, Henry Huth (1815-1878). In fine condition and with generous margins. Only known copy, preserving the original Spanish text of a legend of Saint Francis in India.

He based this comparison on muscle insertions, which appear to be similair along the vertebrate series and to exhibit a certain similary among bony structures.         STRANGE STORIES FROM A CHINESE STUDIO. Translated and Annotated by Herbert A. Giles .

London: Thos. de la Rue & Co., 1880 - Octavo, two volumes: pp. [i-vii] viii-xi [xii-xiii] xiv-xxxii [1] 2-432; [i-iv] [1] 2-404, rebound in quarter green cloth and marbled boards. First edition of this translation. The first publication in English of an extensive selection of stories from the classic collection of Chinese stories of the supernatural. Translations of 164 stories from the LIAO- CHAI CHIH-YI based on the Chinese text published by Tan Ming-lun in 1842, collated with the edition of Yü Chi published in 1766. The LIAO-CHAI could be called, in terms of scope and influence, though not style, the 1001 Nights of China. P'u Sung- ling (1640-1715) collected about 500 supernatural tales throughout China during his lifetime. P'u is believed to have completed the majority of the tales about 1679, though he may have added stories as late as 1707. He was too poor to publish his work, but it was circulated in manuscript before it was published posthumously. Sources differ in their account of the year of publication. One source claims the LIAO-CHAI was published by P'u's grandson in 1740. However, the earliest surviving print version was printed in 1766 in Hangzhou. One of the best original-language editions was that of Tan Ming-lun, published in 1842 in sixteen small octavo volumes of about 160 pages each. Before Giles's collection only fifteen of these stories had been published in English versions. Giles (1845-1935) served as a British diplomat in China during most of the last quarter of the nineteenth century, then took a post as professor of Chinese at Cambridge. He was an eminent Sinologist and his translations are careful and copiously annotated, though sometimes a little dry. The stories are often wildly imaginative, with motifs and themes distinctively Oriental. What is perhaps most remarkable is that, although generally very short, the stories never feel abbreviated or sketchy. Modern selections and translations in English have appeared under many different titles. Critics have called Giles's Victorian era translations "prudish" and they have been dismissed as "orientalist bowdlerizations." (These same criticisms apply to more modern translations as well.) Historically, a very important pioneer work. See John Minford and Tong Man, "Whose Strange Stories? P'u Sung-ling (1640-1715), Herbert Giles (1845-1935), and the Liao-chai chih- yi," East Asian History, June/December 1999, numbers 17/18, pp. 1-48. Bleiler (1978), p. 82. Not in Reginald (1979; 1992). A very good copy. A rare book. (#150886) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Die polnischen Ausstande seit 1830 in ihrem Zusammenhange mit den internationalen Emsturzbestrebungen

First edition. According to Quaritch, 'this phrase, intended as the allurement of a bribe to the land-labourers - a class at all times and in all countries struggling for existence - was used in 1848 by the Polish Revolutionary committee, in order to obtain the co-operation of the Polish peasantry in the Grand Duchy of Posen'. The ephemeral material bound in to this volume comprise: 1. 3 autograph letters signed and 1 autograph card signed from Knorr to Quaritch, all from Berlin on various dates in 1886, totalling 13pp. 2. Knorr's printed business card (carte de visite). 3. Two autograph notes signed to B.Q. from H D Dudgeon of similar date. 4. An autograph note signed from Major E Gunter to B.Q. of similar date. 5.         Supremely desirable AMS in French, signed "J. B. d. A.,"

      n. p., no date but circa 1880 - Folio. 5 pp. Draft for the introduction to his 1880 pamphlet of literary criticism entitled Goethe et Diderot. In part (translated): "These two studies about Goethe and Diderot have been published separately at rather distant periods,—and in a journal, with a style of publication invented at an age pulverizing everything, even thought, but by their double subject, they imperatively required [the two studies] overall and unity of the book. It was expedient to place Goethe and Diderot within the scope of the same volume to bring them closer to each other that way, to make it a better judgment and give a more exact and clearer view of their identity because, hence differences of country and period, language and idea, influence and destiny, Goethe and Diderot—who dug and penetrated beyond—are minds of identical nature Goethe,—the last to come of the two—is certainly the greatest in mankind opinion, as Charlemagne is greater than Pepin, but it is Diderot who is the predecessor and the father,—and yet is it [inserted] a father who has not given all his temperament to his son! Goethe, without Diderot, could exist maybe as Diderot himself, but the both of them are no less minds of same substance and same race,—and so much, than while writing about Goethe, the Voltaire of Germany, who had no one to counterbalance his glory, it is impossible not to think of Diderot, who had Voltaire next to him to kill his by comparison!" Handsomely custom-bound in dark red leather with a matching slipcase. Repaired separations to intersecting folds and a few repaired tears, uniform toning, and a bit of paper loss to corners, otherwise fine condition. Barbey d'Aurevilly was known as a harsh literary critic and earned the nickname ‘The Constable of Literature’ while writing for for Le Constitutionnel. With the exception of the opening paragraph, this introduction focuses almost entirely on Goethe and his reception as a genius in Germany and France. It is a fascinating attack on Goethe’s status as a literary great and is a fine embodiment of Barbey d’Aurevilly’s criticism, as he never hesitated to go against the tide of popular opinion. - Former collection of Philippe Zoummeroff (1995, n°273)

And what is claimed as the most authentic and reliable account of "the virtual conquest of California, in June, 1846, by the Bear Flag Party"

Printed for the subscribers, [Claremont, N.H.] 1880 - (6 1/2 x 4 1/4 inches). [2],239,[1]pp. Half title. Expertly bound to style in period purple straight grain morocco, covers bordered in blind, upper cover lettered in gilt Provenance: E. T. Ide (signature on title) An Ide family association copy of a Bear Flag Rebellion rarity. "This Sketch contains an account of the early years of W.B. Ide, recollections by his daughter of the family's trip across the plains to California in 1845, and an account of the Bear Flag revolt of 1846 as told by Ide to his brother in 1849, and in a letter to a Senator Wambough which, as Ide died in 1852, must have been written within a few years of the event. [An] interesting account of the overland journey of 1845 and important source on the beginnings of American rule in California in 1846." (Streeter). The work is also important in that it is one of the few overland journals written from the point of view of a woman (Ide's daughter, who at eighteen accompanied her father west in 1845), and is unique in its exclusive treatment of the Bear Flag Revolt. Howes speculates that this first edition, printed by the author at the age of eighty-six on a handpress, "was probably small." A rare and important California book. Howes I4, "B"; Streeter Sale 2967; Tutorow 3466; Graff 2059; Zamorano 80, 45; Cowan 1914, p.118. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

A Map of the City of New York by the Commissioners Appointed by an Act of the Legislature Passed April 3rd, 1807. Commissioners' Plan of 1811

New York: C. Van Benthuysen & Sons, 1880. unbound. Map. Lithograph. Image measures 23" x 39". This unique publication of the original 1811 "Commissioners' Plan" of New York City, was issued as part of "The special and local laws affecting public interests in the city of New York. In force on January 1, 1880." The map covers Manhattan from the Battery to 155th Street, including Great Barn Island (modern day Wards Island). Also includes remarks and seals of John Randel, Gouverneur Morris, John Rutherfurd and Simeon De Witt as they appear on the original plan. The 1811 Commissioners Plan, of which this map is a copy of, is considered to be "the single most important document in New York City's development". Based on John Randel's surveys of 1807, It formally lays out New York City's famous grid system. Also known as "Manhattan's Master Plan", it was adopted by New York City's Common Council for the development and sale of land above Houston Street, which was at the time a patchwork of farms, houses and estates. The Slate Legislature appointed Gouverneur Morris, John Rutherfurd and Simeon De Witt the "Commissioners of Streets and Roads". Based on the surveys of John Randel, the Commissioners submitted their plan in 1811, which established the grid up to 155th street. The plan is considered to be visionary, and defines Manhattan to this day. Central Park, not envisioned until 1853, is not part of the plan. There are smaller squares named Harlem, Bloomingdale and Manhattan as well as the Grand Parade, which is today Madison Square Park. The map is in good condition with some toning and wear along folds, including minor losses. Lined for stability. This map, although a copy of the original "Commissioners Plan", is a rare find.
