THE ROYAL GORGE (GRAND CANON OF THE ARKANSAS.) DENVER AND RIO GRANDE RAILWAY - THE SCENIC LINE OF AMERICA [manuscript caption title]

Denver, 1880. Light discoloration in the sky in the upper center portion of the image. Near fine. Matted, glazed, and framed, with calligraphic manuscript title below the photograph. Contemporary wooden presentation frame (see below). A beautiful mammoth-plate albumen photograph by William H. Jackson of the Royal Gorge in central Colorado. Jagged cliffs rise steeply into the sky, and the track of the Denver and Rio Grande Railway comes toward us from the distance, running along the Arkansas River. Jackson used a slight time exposure in taking this image, giving the river a very fluid quality. The photograph is in a contemporary presentation frame, inscribed with the initials of the Denver and Rio Grande Railway in the bottom panel. This photograph was taken during Jackson's Denver era when he did extensive work for the railroads of Colorado and was given his own personal railroad car from which he based his photographic excursions and operations. This photograph is an example of the work Jackson did for the Denver and Rio Grande Railway. Jackson (1843-1942) began his career in photography in 1858, working as a retouching artist in a studio in Troy, New York. In the 1860s, after serving briefly in the Union Army, he worked at several studios in Vermont before moving to Omaha, Nebraska in 1867, where he established his own studio. He worked on an extensive series of views for the Union Pacific Railroad, which earned him enough notice to be recruited by Ferdinand Hayden for the U.S. Geological Survey team. With the Survey, Jackson explored and photographed vast areas of the West, including Yellowstone and parts of Colorado, Montana, Utah, and Nevada. In 1879, his work with the Survey at an end, he set up a commercial photography studio in Denver, marketing landscape photographs of the West. Jackson stayed in Denver until 1898, when he moved to Detroit. A lovely image by William Jackson of this Colorado scene.

[RARE 1880 BROADSIDE PROGRAM FOR A SHOOTING EXHIBITION FOR KAISER WILHELM I OF GERMANY]

Berlin, 1880. Some toning and dust-soiling, a couple minor creases. Backed on thicker paper some time ago. News clippings pasted to verso. Very good. A fascinating broadside, printed in German, for an exhibition from the "Champion rifle shot of the world," William Frank "Doc" Carver, held in Potsdam, Germany on June 13, 1880. In 1879-80, Carver toured Europe to perform in a series of shooting exhibitions, where he engaged in contests with shotguns, rifles, pistols, and shot both from horseback and on foot. Thirty various exhibitions of gunplay are enumerated on the present broadside, such as "Zerschiessen von wenigstens 75 Glaskugeln aus 100" ("Shoot to pieces at least 75 out of 100 glass targets"). During this tour Carver visited France, Belgium, Austria, and Germany, but spent most of the tour in Great Britain. Upon returning to America he would partner with Buffalo Bill Cody on a traveling Wild West show. In later years Carver would invent the diving horse stunt, the origin of which, like most of Carver's story, is shrouded in legend.

THE FIFTH CAVALRY IN THE SIOUX WAR OF 1876. CAMPAIGNING WITH CROOK

Milwaukee, Wi., 1880. Original printed wrappers. Spine chipped at top (half inch) and bottom (2 inches). Wrappers soiled, moderately dampstained, and with small chips at edges. Contemporary inscription on front wrapper: "compliments of the author." Light age toning internally. A very good copy. In a half morocco box. This is the rare first edition, of which King states in the preface to the 1890 reprint: "Only enough copies were printed to reach the few comrades who rode the grim circuit of the 'Bad Lands' in that eventful year, and the edition was long ago exhausted." King was first lieutenant of the Fifth Cavalry, and served through the Big Horn and Yellowstone Expedition of 1876. His journal of the expedition is one of the most interesting narratives of Indian warfare in the Wyoming and Dakota country ever published. The company left Laramie on June 22 for the purpose of cutting off the Indians on the South Cheyenne line. On July 7 a courier reached them with news of the annihilation of Gen. Custer and his favorite companies of the Seventh Cavalry. The Fifth Cavalry, with nothing but the clothes they wore and without supply wagons, started in pursuit of the Indians, trailing and fighting them through nearly a thousand miles of country in a period of ten weeks, halting only at the head of the Heart River, when the last ration was gone.

        Photographic Scenery of South Africa

1880 - ALEXANDER, Sam. Photographic Scenery of South Africa. [Syracuse, New York]: Sam Alexander, 1880. Thick quarto, original full maroon morocco, gilt-stamped pictorial front board, gilt ruled spine, watered silk endpapers, all edges gilt. $4500.First edition of this handsome 1880 photographic album, published by subscription only, containing 100 vintage collotype prints of colonial South Africa, each measuring 4 by 5-1/2 inches, captioned and mounted on heavy gilt-edged stock, with mounted collotype portrait of British colonial leader Sir Henry Bartle Edward Frere on the title page, richly bound in original morocco gilt. This handsome photographic album of South Africa, issued by subscription only, contains 100 vintage collotype prints of South African cities and towns, verdant landscapes and portraits of tribal peoples. The splendid 4 by 5-1/2 inch views, each mounted on thick gilt-edged stock, feature images of Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Zanzibar, mountain waterfalls, the “Diamond Fields” of De Beer’s Mine and others, Bird Island, King Williams Town, Natal, the Transvaal Gold Fields, Mozambique and scenes of battles from the Zulu War. Albums such as this, with its important contemporary visual history of colonial South Africa, prove central to an understanding of colonial histories in documenting military campaigns, “topographical features… and visible mineral resources,” while also demonstrating photography’s role as “an integral part of… the colonial enterprise” (Lenman, 132). The volume also includes informative text on South African history and a biographical essay on British statesman Sir Henry Bartle Frere, to whom this volume is dedicated. Frere served as “governor of the Cape and high commissioner for the settlement of native affair in South Africa” and his leadership was instrumental during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 (DNB). Printed by Sam Alexander and issued by subscription only, with 100 tissue-guarded vintage collotype prints produced by Marion and Company, a London photographic firm.         A BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF THE LIFE OF WILLIAM B. IDE: WITH A MINUTE AND INTERESTING ACCOUNT OF ONE OF THE LARGEST EMIGRATING COMPANIES. (3000 MILES OVER LAND), FROM THE EAST TO THE PACIFIC COAST. AND WHAT IS CLAIMED AS THE MOST AUTHENTIC AND RELIABLE ACCOUNT OF "THE VIRTUAL CONQUEST OF CALIFORNIA, IN JUNE, 1846, BY THE BEAR FLAG PARTY

[Claremont, N.H.], 1880. Half title. 12mo. Expertly bound to style in period purple straight-grain morocco. Very good. Provenance: E.T. Ide (signature on titlepage). An Ide family association copy, with the ownership signature of E. Truman Ide of Elgin, Illinois on the titlepage. "This SKETCH contains an account of the early years of W.B. Ide, recollections by his daughter of the family's trip across the plains to California in 1845, and an account of the Bear Flag revolt of 1846 as told by Ide to his brother in 1849, and in a letter to a Senator Wambough which, as Ide died in 1852, must have been written within a few years of the event. [An] interesting account of the overland journey of 1845 and important source on the beginnings of American rule in California in 1846..." - Streeter. The work is also important in that it is one of the few overland journals written from the point of view of a woman (Ide's daughter, who at eighteen accompanied her father west in 1845), and is unique in its exclusive treatment of the Bear Flag Revolt. Howes speculates that this first edition, printed by the author at the age of eighty-six on a handpress, "was probably small." A rare and important California book.

Presented in a beautiful mahogany box, the collection is spread over five layers and comprises specimens of rocks, shells and fossils from all around the world. It originates from the Tennant's shop, which was located at 149 Strand, London and offered all manners of geological specimens, shaped stone ornaments, models, storage cabinets and objects for the microscope. Together with the box comes a small book comprising printed texts related to Tennant's work and a manuscript list of all the specimens contained inside. One of the texts is a 1878 detailed list of the previous year's UK mineral production by county and by type. It is followed by a guide to the Wakefield Tower exhibition, which presented the crown jewels and the famous Koh-i-noor diamond, "the most splendid jewel in the possession of Her Majesty". It also includes content of the lectures given by Professor Tennant at his residence on the Strand and three pages of notes on diamonds from the Cape of Good Hope accompanied by illustrations. The manuscript list dated December 1880 and written by James Tennant himself provides names and origin of all the 216 items included in the box. It is divided into the following groups: minerals which are either the components of rocks or are found embedded in them (1-46), combustible minerals (47-52), metals and metalliferous minerals (53-76), rocks (77-106), fossils (107-109), Pliocene (110-123), Eocene (124-149), Cretaceous (150-168), Oolite (169-177), Lias (178-184), Carboniferous (185-189), Carboniferous limestone (190-197), Devonian (198-201), Silurian (202-212) and lower Silurian (213-216). Tennant's first acquaintance with minerals came at an early age, when he worked as an apprentice to John Mawe, a renowned London dealer of geological specimens. After attending classes at the Royal Institution, he was appointed as a teacher and later professor of geological mineralogy at King's College. In 1838, he was elected a fellow of the Geological Society and in 1862, President of the Geological Association. When diamonds were first found in South Africa, like Tennant had predicted they would be, he himself maintained their genuineness. He superintended the recut of one the world's largest diamonds, the koh-i-noor, as he was appointed "mineralogist to the Queen" in 1840.

I-IV zusätzlich nummeriert) - daher hier insgesamt 3.366 farbige & 9 unkolorierte Tafeln enthalten. 45000 Gramm.

ONE HUNDRED TRICKS WITH CARDS. GAMBLERS' TRICKS WITH CARDS, EXPOSED AND EXPLAINED.

New York: Dick & Fitzgerald, [ca. 1880]. - 114,[46]pp. including illustrations. Publisher's printed wrappers. Minor shelf wear, upper spine repaired with tape, rear wrapper similarly repaired. Internally very clean. Very good. Jonathan H. Green, "the reformed gambler," is the most important figure in the early literature of American gambling. A famed gambler in his youth, he was known for his talents from Texas to Boston and all points in between. He abandoned gambling just shy of age thirty, and became an advocate against it, seeking to expose the tricks of the trade. Here he offers the inside scoop on games such as Dog Loo (played on the Red River), Whist, Thimbles (or cups), Poker, and Euchre, and on techniques such as palming, lapping, forcing cards, shuffling, cutting, dealing, stocking the pack, and cogging dice. Many other interesting subjects are also discussed, including horse racing, and nailing a card to a wall by a pistol shot. Green adds numerous tales of personal experience, and the illustrations offer the reader the ability to recognize common sleights of hand. Of course, by offering detailed information on how to recognize gamblers' tricks, Green is also providing an advanced tutorial for the aspiring gambler or cheat. The copyright date on the verso of the titlepage appears to read 1850 (the first year of publication), but the worn type throughout, as well as the other titles advertised as available by Dick and Fitzgerald, indicates that this edition was likely produced around 1880. In any edition, a rare and significant work. TOOLE-STOTT 324.

[PAIR OF ORIGINAL WATERCOLORS OF THE CAMP OF K AND F COMPANIES OF THE NINTH U.S. INFANTRY DURING THE UTE WAR, AT SNAKE RIVER, WYOMING TERRITORY, IN 1879 - 1880]

[Wyoming, 1880. Very minor wear. Near fine. A pair of lovely watercolors of the camp of two U.S. Infantry companies in Wyoming Territory during the Ute War in 1879-80. The watercolors show the camp of K and F companies of the Ninth Infantry near the Snake River. Based on the scenery, these must depict the southern part of Jackson's Hole, the only area which corresponds to the views shown. One shows the camp during the summer, and the other shows it in the winter. The camp was established in a valley, which is shown as lush and green in the summer scene, but barren and snow-covered in the winter scene. A note on the verso of the summer scene says that the "pictures were painted with water colors by a soldier of this command." The verso of each card contains pencil descriptions of each scene. For example, in the comments on the summer scene it is noted that "the brush back of the tents are sage brush...the timber back of the camp follows the river still to the right are mountains and hills with cedar timbers." Some of the text on the verso of the winter scene discusses the various buildings in the camp, including the cook's house and the sutler's store. The Ninth Infantry was ordered into the field as part of Army strategy during the Ute War, and established their camp along the Snake River in Wyoming Territory in November 1879. They remained there until July 1880. Original artwork from the Indian wars of the West is rare.
