The Unanimous Declaration of the Thirteen United States of America in Congress. [Benjamin Tyler-Giles Lithograph printing of the Declaration of Independence]

Durham and New York: The Giles Lithographic and Liberty Printing Co. for Mess. W. Duke, Sons & Company, 1880. Broadside. Very Good. Lithographic print on faux parchment. Approximately 20.5" x 27". Original metal trim still present at top and bottom. Minor edge wear and light wrinkling. Three short marginal tears, mended on verso with what appears to be tissue or archival tape. This reprint of the Declaration of Independence is of the famous facsimile originally published by Benjamin Owen Tyler in 1818. Tyler's documents were the first to produce the Declaration in script and included exceptionally realistic signatures of the signers. "The publisher designed and executed the ornamental writing, and has been particular to copy the Facsimiles exact, and has also observed the same punctuation, and copied every Capital as in the original. . . . [The signatures] are curiously exact imitations, so much so that it would be difficult if not impossible for the closest scrutiny to distinguish them . . . from the original." (Bidwell, #2, pp. 286-287) As also noted by Bidwell (see the note after the entry on p. 287), Giles lithographs are facsimiles of Tyler's work. These were produced as premiums for Duke tobacco products and could only be obtained by redeeming certificates from 75 packets of Duke products. As such, it is likely that few of these lithographs remain, and they may possibly be as scarce as the Tyler originals. As of 2015, no examples are listed in OCLC, and Bidwell found only one example at the New York Public Library as well as a photostat reproduction at the American Antiquarian Society. Between ABPC, the Rare Book Hub, and Worthpoint, only two examples are shown as having been sold at auction; one for $1,024 in 2009 and one for $7,995 in 2011.

        Le Guide du Carrossier

Paris: ca. 1880. Album of 47 maquettes of fancy carriages and sleds, including one water color of a ceremonial “traineau”* ; the others printed in lithographs and carefully hand-colored (some heighted with gold or silver). A few signed by Lagard*2. The finished maquettes were reproduced in the monthly issues Le Guide du carrossier et les équipages Å• Paris, Revue de la construction des voitures et des automobiles (1880-1900) *3 . The publisher was Brice Thomas *4. These illustrations picture examples of excessively decorated luxury carriages (carrosse France, Luxuswagenbau. Germany) driven by wealthy Europeans in an era before the automobile . The album includes six highly decorated sleds (traineau. France; schlittern. Germany). The watercolor “traineau” unsigned, from the early 19th century, is essentially 2 a ceremonial sleigh used by the wealthy society to appear in a winter festival. The sled is modeled on a baroque style of traineau shaped as a slipper, decorated with cupids. Not only are the maquettes beautiful in their own right, but they are clearer and sharper than the final photographs that would appear in the semi-monthly periodical. Before the automobile was invented , horse and cart were necessary but could also be a luxurious means of transportation. Driving in the private carriage unfolded in the 19th century as never before and sparked a boom in Luxuswagenbau. New wealthy strata of society at that time developed a large mobility and need for representation. (Furger. Introduction) Notes: *1. The ceremonial traîneau was first created as a means of winter sporting for the pleasure of the European royalty and aristocracy in the 17th and 18th century. Far from having a purely utilitarian purpose, these fabulous vehicles were used throughout Europe in parades and races. “Parade sleighs came into fashion in the Renaissance and remained in vogue until the French Revolution.” No expense was spared in the construction of sleighs, which were executed by leading court artists and sculptors, and no detail was overlooked, as even the upholstery and blankets were lavishly decorated and the horses were outfitted with silver, feathers, and jewels … A further interesting aspect of 18th century “traîneau culture” was that it enhanced the woman’s role in court ceremony…the occupant of the sleigh would be female “the real center of the event was the lady…in which she displays in the most magnificent attire her wealth and beauty…the head covered with diamonds…she appears as a Venus in her vehicle, and is conscious of the admiration of thousands of people.” (Hobbs) *2 Lagard, Luce André (Lagarde ?) was an important designer of carriages, especially for Le Guide du Carrossier, 66 Rue Abbatucci, Paris, France. He was awarded the Class XIV. The Hub Medal of Merit," for best design and working drawing of a One-horse Cab adapted for public use in cities.” (Hub, 1880) *3 Le Guide du Carrossier later La Carrosserie française : publication spéciale traitant de la construction des voitures et de la sellerie-harnais: paraissant tous les deux mois. 1859-1913. Montly, bi-monthly Le Guide du Carrossier described and pictured luxury carriages as well as vehicles for transport and public service. It employed carefully drawn illustrations with practical information followed by dimensional measurements for all necessary parts to major construction including énchantillons. It printed details for painting saddlery and harnesses, and it recounted the historical and commercial history of the different body types. The carriages were drawn to scale in outlines, shaded in black and printed in colors (as here). *4 Thomas, Brice (Pierre-Brice-Marc-Antoine Thomas) was born in Friaize , a small town of Eure et Loire ( 28) , July 16, 1820. From the age of 13, apprenticed to a cooper as a 3 wheelwright. He was a mechanic during the early Tours de France. Called to military service, he served in the artillery and learned elementary and descriptive geometry, mathematics and industrial design. According to an article in The Hub, In 1858, Thomas founded Guide du Carrossier as well as a school for the instruction of young men who were ambitious to occupy responsible positions within the carriage and later automobile manufacturers. He is author of Traité de menuiserie en voitures,..[Privatedly printed: 1870] (Hub, 1913). Reference: Furger, Andres:Kutschen Europas des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts, Band 1: EquipagenHandbuch.         Photograph album of Sydney, NSW, New Zealand, Fiji, Victoria.

Ca. 1880.. A photographic record of a trip to Fiji, New Zealand, Sydney, the Blue Mountains & Victoria, ca. 1880, by an American, we believe. The nicely designed album of albumen photographs has the photographs mounted in an accordian-style, the album opening in two directions, with the photographs mounted on both sides of the linen coated boards. None of the photographs have photographer's names on the images, and most are hand-captioned, but some have printed captions most likely garnered from a photographer's letterpress. The album begins with photographs by the Dufty brothers in Fiji, with 15 views (8x5 1/4") including a composite photograph British Colonists & Natives in Fiji; Hall in Government House, Lavuka (sic) (wonderful tribal art); Levuka, looking towards the North; a Fiji settlement (native community); cotton plantation; Halfrontes Residence Loma Loma Vanua Balavuk Fiji; "Dakin" Savu Savu Bay, Vauna Levu (2 small Caucasian boys sitting in front of their grass home); The King's Canoe (many Fijians on board); Native Trading Canoes on the Beach Levuka; Looking towards the South Dr. Brower's House; the Common outrigger dug out with sail (2 Caucasian men); taro patch & 4 cartes de visite of a bathing scene, natives, a lawyer Fiji & Wallace Island New Caledonia. There are 8 large New Zealand views (7 1/4 x 5 1/4") and they include New Zealand Scenery No. 1 Harrison's Cove, Milford Sound, With the Government the Steamer Luna, and the yacht Jessie Nichol at anchor; Dart River on Martin's Bay Track; Tooth Peak Mts.; Jollie River Pass; Mt. Blowhard (with 3 children seated in foreground); Kawarau River; Mt. Cook; Naseby, N.Z. (this image is located in the Museum of NZ photographic collection as C.014137, although the title "Naseby in '79" and Burton Bros Dunedin is trimmed off). We were only able to identify one photograph amongst the many displayed on the most excellent digital collection of the Museum of New Zealand photographic collection. The New South Wales & Victoria portion of the trip has 6 large views (8x6") including The Craggs at the Entrance Harbor (sic) of Sydney, Australia. "33" in lower left corner; Mountain scenery in the Interior above Sydney, "43" in lower left corner (2" closed tear) Victorian Views, The Yarra, from the Botanical Gardens Bridge Looking toward Richmond; The Old Cement Works, Schnapper Point; Scene from the North Shore, Sydney Harbour; St. Leonard's Township from the Hill, an oval photograph, possibly by Nicholas Caire? Then follows a collection of 21 photographs of Sydney, most likely by Alexander Brodie. They are stereoscopic view size images measuring 3" square, mounted panoramically. There are 7 of Sydney harbor, Governor's residence; 4 botanical garden scenes, 2 of the Heads, 4 unidentified harbor views; 3 of the Blue Mountains including the Zig Zag. The view of Pyrmont Bridge appears to be the same as one held in the Mitchell Library (Digital Order No. a602005). Nicely bound in a brown cloth album decoratively stamped in black with the gilt title "Card Album" on both the front and back covers, 11 x 8 1/4". Both the photographs and the album are in very good condition.

"Alfredo Leonardo Edel, semplicemente conosciuto come Alfredo Edel (Colorno, 15 maggio 1856 ?

Fagin the Jew, Poster by Cruikshank for Dicken's Oliver Twist

The Calhoun Print Company c.1880s, Hartford, CT - Fagin the JewOriginal Poster Illustrated by George Cruikshank for Dickens’ Oliver Twist(ENGLISH ANTI-SEMITISM) Oliver Twist, Fagin the Jew. Illustrated by George Cruikshank. Hartford, CT: The Calhoun Print Company. [Circa 1880s]. Full color woodblock poster measuring 80 inches x 39 inches linen backed. Very Good condition.A brilliant example of late 19th century woodblock technology, this poster was created from individual boxwood blocks produced separately for each color. The imposing size provides room for three separate vignettes from the novel Oliver Twist: Fagin’s Last Night Alive (Fagin alone in his cell, the largest and most central image); Oliver Introduced to the Old Gent; and Oliver’s Reception by Fagin and the Boys. Fagin appears in each drawing bearing the characteristically loathsome Jewish nose as seen through anti-Semitic vision. Oliver Twist was soon adapted for the theater, where it proved to be an enduring favorite. This poster would have been used as an advertisement for such a production in America.Oliver Twist, Charles Dickens’ second novel, was written in 1837 and tells the story of the orphan Oliver, set against the seamy underside of the London criminal world. First published in monthly parts in Bentley’s Miscellany, it was originally illustrated by George Cruikshank, from which these images are produced.Dickens was severely criticized for introducing criminals and prostitutes into his novels, as well as for targeting the Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834, which renewed the importance of the workhouse as a means for relief for the poor. The public apparently wanted more of the lighter fare that previously had been given them in The Pickwick Papers. The anti-Semitism ingrained into English society at the time Oliver Twist was written emerged boldly in Dickens’ depiction of Fagin, who was seen as a crook and a corruptor of young children. This vivid portrait endures as one of the most memorable of any of the author’s characters and maintains its fascination due to the complexity of the character. Fagin is a Jew and an immigrant and as such had to live under appalling conditions. Although he robs, steals, and trains young boys to be criminals, he also possesses a moral sense, and it is this contradictory morality which makes him so compelling. In a way, Fagin is still a child himself, and thus has a genuine love of children. He is not a violent man and knows that in order to bring children to himself, no violence must be used. He treats the boys with great fondness, keeps them warm, and protects them. Dickens expressed surprise when the Jewish community complained about the stereotypical depiction of Fagin. Later, when he sold his London residence, Tavistock House, to a Jewish couple, whom he befriended, he felt compelled to make restitution. In his novel, Our Mutual Friend, Dickens created Riah, a positive Jewish character. Also, when editing Oliver Twist for the later editions of his works, he eliminated most references to Fagan as "the Jew".George Cruikshank (1792-1878) was a humorist of the school of Hogarth and is considered by some to be one of the best that Britain has ever produced. From the beginning he was concerned with satire, achieving public notice with painting theatre backdrops, and making pamphlet etchings and illustrating Punch magazine, but his political caricature work was soon overtaken by his work as a book illustrator. His best known work was for Charles Dickens, starting with Sketches by Boz and reaching its zenith, perhaps, with Oliver Twist. Among his large number of other illustrated books were a Grimm’s Fairy Tales (1827), a Pilgrim’s Progress and Paradise Lost, and seven novels by Harrison Ainsworth. Our research indicates that this poster is very rare. Printed in the 1880s, it has not been seen before by the Head of the Poster Department at Swann Auction Galleries in New York, who has provided a letter of authenticity which accompanies the artwork. In the 1950s, a reproduction usi

        Islands of the World

      - This beautiful set of two schoolgirl or schoolboy manuscript maps depicts the various islands of the world. The first map includes the British Isles, Sardinia, Iceland, Ceylon, Sicily, Corsica, Cuba, New Zealand, Anglesea, Madagascar, Candia, Newfoundland, Isle of Man, Balearic Islands, Haiti, Long Island, Tasmania and the Isle of Wight. The second map features Sumatra, Borneo, Mauritius and Bourbon, Madeira, Galapagos, Long Island, Prince Edwards Island, the Canary Islands, Cyprus, New Guinea, Jamaica, Java, Trinidad and Socratra Island. Both maps are beautifully colored in pink. The maps are in good condition with minor wear along the original centerfolds. Minor toning and foxing at places with some edge wear. Second sheet includes rip near top. The maps date to circa 1880 and were most likely made by a student or apprentice as training in geography, drafting, and penmanship. Manuscript map-making was a useful educational tool in the 19th century, a period of imperialism and increased world trade in which geography grew significantly as a field of study. In the United States and northwestern Europe, reform movements that sought to improve the quality and accessibility of childhood education pushed for the inclusion of geography in school curricula. One common method of teaching was the making of manuscript maps. Working from wall maps, globes, and atlases, students were made to meticulously hand-reproduce maps in pen and ink and with watercolor. Such exercises not only provided a way to review and retain geographical knowledge, but they also functioned as training in penmanship, calligraphy, and drafting. This map is a lovely document that straddles the line between art and geography. Map Set. Two maps. Pen and ink with watercolor. Each sheet measures 7 x 8.5".

Catalogue of Architectural and Ornamental Castings, Manufactured by George Smith & Co., Architectural Ironfounders and Sanitary Engineers, Contractors, By Special Appointment, To Her Majesty's War Department. Section VI. Spray Fountains, Drinking Fountains, &c.

Glasgow (and London and Dublin): George Smith & Co., Sun Foundry. William Gorman & Co., draughtsmen and Lithographers. Hardcover. Good. N.d., circa 1880. Elephantine folio, 43 by 28 cm. Frontis rendering of the Sun Foundry elevation, title page, [2], 39 plates with a wide variety of fountains, some monumental and spectacular, and their component parts (sculpture, pools, canopies, aquarium fountains, etc.) A few of the illustrations are full page, and two are double paged (counting as two plates each). While the illustrations are simple line scaled drawings and straightforward lithography, the elaborate fountains, with their seraps, dolphins, cranes, acanthus and other Beaux Arts detailing, are visually arresting and make this an extraordinary trade catalogue. There are other George Smith catalogues to be found on OCLC First Search, but none are this particular one or in this large a format, and the total number of Smith catalogues in book form is also not large. (Other catalogues, presumed slightly earlier, can be of a fuller line offered by the company.) Soiling on the blue paper pastedown. Some looseness of the hinge. General wear.

        Islands of the World

Map Set. Two maps. Pen and ink with watercolor. Each sheet measures 7 x 8.5". This beautiful set of two schoolgirl or schoolboy manuscript maps depicts the various islands of the world. <br><br>The maps date to circa 1880 and were most likely made by a student or apprentice as training in geography, drafting, and penmanship. Manuscript map-making was a useful educational tool in the 19th century, a period of imperialism and increased world trade in which geography grew significantly as a field of study.<br><br>In the United States and northwestern Europe, reform movements that sought to improve the quality and accessibility of childhood education pushed for the inclusion of geography in school curricula.

Fine folding duotone lithographed map with printed color in outline, laid down on cartographic linen in 35 sections (some toning). Original publisher's brown pebbled cloth gilt (a bit edgeworn). Provenance: With the inkstamp of Frederick Hodges to front pastedown. With inkstamp of "W. B. Walkup & Co., Framers, Map and Chart Mounters, 540 Clay Street, San Francisco." From the important cartographical library of Warren Heckrotte, his sale, Rare Cartography, Exploration and Voyages, Part II, December 3, 2015, Lot 133. "LARGEST SCALE MAP OF THE TERRITORY" (Streeter) First edition. Large and important map of Arizona as the mineral boom was taking hold, with mining districts designated through outline coloring as well as the counties and Indian reservations, with military telegraphs also shown. There is the Seal of the Territory with signature in plate of J.C. Fremont, Governor. Distances are indicated along the roads. Tombstone, founded a few years earlier, is prominent on the map, with its own district designation, but farther south Bisbee, founded the year the map was published, does not make an appearance. On the inside of the front cover is mounted a leaf of text, titled "Table of distances from and to Different Stations in Arizona Territory to Accompany Official Map." Paul Riecker, a nationally renowned civil and mining engineer, drew this map from his previous topographical survey of California and Arizona as part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. It is the first official map of the Arizona Territory. Riecker led an early exploration party across the Colorado Plateau and was among the first to make contact with the Havasupai at the Grand Canyon. Paul Riecker sued for homestead rights, thereby creating the origins of Riecker's Addition. He built the first houses north of the railroad tracks in Tucson in 1880. In 1896, Paul Riecker mapped Pasadena, California, and laid out Inglewood and Redondo Beach, California. He was also involved in the Panama-Nicaragua Canal controversy as one of the original surveyors of the Nicaragua Canal route. Phillips Maps, p. 123. Streeter 526. Graff 1204. Rumsey 2980.
