Beaman and James Fennemore and is credited with many of the photographs from the second expedition. Powell was impressed with Hillers skills, hiring him as the first staff photographer of the Bureau of Ethnology and continued working for Powell's US Geological Survey through 1919. His remarkable photographs of the Zuni and Hopi Pueblos in New Mexico and Arizona are some of the earliest photos made in the region and remain primary source material for the study of these cultures.         British Fresh-Water Fishes

London: William Mackenzie,, [1879]. 2 volumes, folio (365 x 265 mm). Original red-brown morocco-grain cloth over bevelled boards, spines and front boards lettered and decorated in black and gilt, rear board blocked in blind, all edges gilt, dark green coated endpapers. 41 chromolithographic plates heightened in gum arabic including frontispieces, all by A. F. Lydon, title pages printed in red and black, engravings to the text. Spines gently rolled, and lightly frayed at ends, tips bumped and rubbed, scattered markings to text, and occasional browning apparently from laid-in plant pressings (now gone), a few plates slightly soiled in margins, vol. 1 half-title spotted, vol. 2 front free endpaper creased, half-title and title marked, pale tide-mark to fore margins of a few plates, sometimes just touching the images. Overall a good copy with vivid colour plates. First edition of this "classic and beautifully illustrated" work (Everard and Knight, Britain's Game Fishes, online), "even more lavishly illustrated [than Houghton's previous titles]. Full-page coloured plates of each species were included, as well as a landscape scene in black and white of a freshwater location where the fish could be found. Each section of the book discussed where the fish thrived in Britain, its size, its colour, and whether or not it was edible, and if so, how, it tasted ? In a delicate balancing act, Houghton avoided 'God-talk' as well as any discussion of evolutionary theory ? He also deferred to professional scientists in order to bolster his own authority" (Lightman, Victorian Popularizers of Science, pp. 84-6). There was a second edition in 1895, and a third in 1900.

        THE SEASONS: A ROMAN IDYLL?SUMMER - Alma-Tadema.

Whistler v. Ruskin. Art & Art Critics

London: Chatto & Windus [1879?]. 'Third edition'. Hard Cover. 17 p.; 19 cm. Printed brown paper cover; below Whistlerââ?‰?¢s name & address is the date "Dec. 24, 1878." With this is bound Mr. Whistlerââ?‰?¢s 'Ten o'Clock' (a talk delivered by James McNeill Whistler in London, February 1885), published in London by Chatto & Windus in 1888. Publisherââ?‰?¢s device on title-page and on last leaf of the first title. "The 1878 libel suit of Whistler v Ruskin, which elucidated the conflict between the newly formed aesthetic movement and the Victorian ideal of art, embodies the struggle between the establishment and a new worldview. It is yet another example of the reluctance with which the old makes way for the new. In this case, the conflict was played out on the stage of aesthetics and morality in late Victorian England. John Ruskin represented all that was essentially Victorian in both theory and virtue, whereas James Abbott McNeill Whistler illustrated what was to be the vanguard of modernity in art practice and theory." Both works are signed twice in Whistler's "butterfly" signature. They are bound together in simple full leather by Zaehnsdorf with the bookplate of George G. T. Treherne and the original wrappers bound in. A prize copy of a notorious icon of modern art theory. Stock#OB681.
