        SOMETHING BETTER.

Boston: Boston: Lee and Shepard, Publishers, 1878., 1878. First edition. First edition. 12mo. Original red cloth, advertisements on endpapers, 232 pp. plus 8 pages of advertisements. Book title four of six books published as the "Sparkling Series" of the publisher's many book publications. Presents Detective Gabriel Gooch, in a book published in the same year as THE LEAVENWORTH CASE written by Anna Katharine Green. Although Detective Gooch appears in only three chapters, he is somewhat unusual, "If Marcus Graves committed an error in placing his case unreservedly in the hands of Detective Gooch, that worthy made a great mistake when he adopted the profession of detective. He was singularly unqualified for that calling...." Gabriel Gooch sounds like a parody of "Ebenezer Gryce" in THE LEAVENWORTH CASE. Lyle H. Wright's third volume of his bibliography on Fiction, Wright 111-5071 cites two copies of the book, one copy in the Huntington Library and the other copy at the Library of Congress. OCLC cites four copies, Huntington Library, Library of Congress, Ohio State, and Yale University. Not listed in any of the standard reference books, such as Hubin, Barzun & Taylor, etc. Some minor spotting to the cloth, else a very good, tight copy.

        Max Klinger: Endzeitliche Landschaft (Originalzeichnung)

Octavo, original red cloth. $1500.First edition of this work on money supply and international bimetallism, in original cloth. In this widely influential series of lectures Walker addresses the money supply question, a topic of vital importance during an era of continued industrial expansion. In addition to these and other theoretical contributions, Walker helped to systematize and greatly improve the teaching of economics while president of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. ""Unquestionably the most prominent and best known of American [economic] writers"" (F.W. Tausig, quoted in DAB X:343-44). Bookplate.Interior quite nice, only minor rubbing and soiling to cloth. Housed in custom cloth clamshell box. $1600.First edition of the text of this lecture delivered by George in the Metropolitan Temple, San Francisco, on March 26, 1878.One of GeorgeÂ’s few separate publications prior to his immensely influential landmark work, Progress and Poverty, which appeared in 1879 shortly after this speech was delivered. Addressing the causes of poverty and class conflict—the central theme of Progress and Poverty—George here calls for a confiscatory tax on land in order to maintain the American traditions of cheap land and entrepreneurial freedom. Though his analysis was scorned by trained economists like Alfred Marshall, Karl Marx, and George B. Dixwell, it proved extremely popular with the American public. Reformers such as the California Tax Reform League, who sponsored this speech, propelled George to the head of the Single Tax Movement opposed to monopolism and socialism. In 1886 George narrowly lost the mayoral election of New York City (but finished far ahead of Theodore Roosevelt). Tiny stain to front wrapper, otherwise a fragile piece in exceptionally good condition. Scarce.

        1870s Collection of "Sea Mosses"

Santa Cruz, California 1878 - Two folio presentation albums of beautifully arranged sea moss (seaweed) specimens, a total of 125 pages, presented by C. L. Anderson of Santa Cruz to Mills Seminary, in elaborate gilt stamped and tooled fine leather bindings.Collecting, drying and pressing sea moss became a popular pastime in the mid to late 1800s. On the east coast, the Harvard naturalist Louis Agassiz undertook the first formal survey of plant and animal life throughout Buzzards Bay and Vineyard Sound in 1873. One of the specimens here is from Cape Ann, Mass. Sea moss specimens were dried and prepared for display, often in albums, as in this presentation by Charles Anderson to Mills College. The first album has manuscript botanical names of each specimen of seaweed and the location where it was gathered, and the second album with the sea mosses arranged decoratively. The first album includes a full page manuscript presentation page, in which the author explains that the specimens are arranged not by system, but by "grand divisions", which include: the Rhodosperms or Red Algae; the Melanosperms, or Dark Algae; the Chlorosperms, or Green Algae; and the "plant like animals, often gathered as "Sea Mosses", the Hydroids & c." The presentation page dated Jan 1st, 1878, Santa Cruz, Cal., and signed C. L. Anderson. The book plates of the Margaret Carnegie Library, (Mills College, Seminary Park 1870) at the front paste down of each volume. Most of the locations for the specimens are Santa Cruz; other locations include New York Bay, NY; College Point, NY; Cape Ann, Mass; Eastport, Maine; Plymouth, England; and Picton, Canada. A few of the specimens include notes on their naming, such as "Pikea Californica, named for Col. Pike author of "Subtropical Rambles". The second folio volume includes sea moss specimens arranged decoratively, most of them in floral bouquet form. Others are very decorative, including a wreath, an astonishing harp in which each string consists of a delicate strand of seaweed; a ship's anchor; a cross; a double star; and a basket of flowers. Charles Lewis Anderson (1827 - 1910) trained in medicine. In 1864 he moved to Santa Cruz, California, where he lived until his death in 1910. He was an amateur botanist and an avid collector of plants in Nevada and California. Many of his Carson City collections appeared in Asa Gray's 1865 paper "New Plants of California and Nevada, chiefly from Professor W. H. Brewer and Dr. C. L. Anderson." (Proceedings of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, 6, p. 519-556).Folio volumes with gilt titles and elaborate borders at front boards, titled in gilt "Sea Mosses" at front covers and spines. Spines with gilt raised bands, and gilt decorated compartments. Marbled end papers, gilt inner dentelles. Volume I, [62] pp, most of the specimens laid down on separate paper tipped in to the album. A few pages with 2 or more specimens. Volume II: [63] pp, multiple specimens per page, laid down on album pages. Volumes not paginated, but Vol. II numbered in pencil, with pages 2, 6, 7, 14, 22 and 57 not present. A total of 125 specimen pages in the two volumes.A truly handsome labor of love.         The Bakerian Lecture: On Repulsion Resulting from Radiation. Part V" [Crookes] WITH "New Determination of the Mechanical Equivalent of Heat" [Joule] in Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London, Volume 169, Parts I & II., 1878, pp. 365-385 [Joule]; pp. 243-318 [Crookes]

London: Harrison & Sons, 1878 FIRST EDITION & PRINTING OF A LONG & IMPORTANT PAPER IN THE HISTORY OF VACUUM PHYSICS BY BRITISH CHEMIST SIR WILLIAM CROOKES. In it, Crookes "looked at the effect of repulsion due to radiation on chemical precipitates, varied the characteristics of the radiation, investigated conductors and experimented with the presentation of surfaces", comparing the reactions of various substances by using radiometers (Wess, Crookes's Radiometers, Notes and Records of the Royal Society, 2010). Volume includes Parts I & II of the Phil Trans bound together and 70 plates. Of this paper, James Clerk Maxwell wrote: "Mr. Crookes describes several most extensive series of experiments. The labor, skill and ingenuity displayed in these experiments are marvelous and many of the individual results are valuable but I think the improvement of the methods of making measuring and preserving a vacuum is likely to be still more valuable to science than any of the actual experiments" (Maxwell, The Scientific Letters, 681). And Maxwell was right: Crookes did a great deal of important work, but "he was a pioneer in the construction and use of vacuum tubes for the study of physical phenomena" (Wikipedia). "With his thorough grounding in the experimentally difficult art of vacuum physics, Crookes laid the foundation for the fuller investigation by J. J. Thomson of the behavior of radiant matter in the discharge tube, showing, for example, that it induced phosphorescence in minerals like…; that it caused the glass of the discharge tube to phosphoresce; that its stream could be deflected by a magnet; and, most important of all, that since it cast a shadow of an opaque object . . . it travelled in straight lines and was corpuscular in nature" (DSB). ALSO: FIRST EDITION & PRINTING OF JOULE'S FINAL DETERMINATION OF THE MECHANICAL EQUIVALENT OF HEAT. Inspired by his belief that heat was derived from work, Joule spent a great deal of his life converting mechanical work directly into heat without any electrical steps as he worked to determine the mechanical equivalent of heat. The concept of the mechanical equivalent of heat states "that motion and heat are mutually interchangeable and that in every case, a given amount of work would generate the same amount of heat, provided the work done is totally converted to heat energy" (Wikipedia). In this paper, Joule discusses problems relating to his discovery of the first law of thermodynamics, the principle of the conservation of energy, and presents his final measurement of the mechanical equivalent of heat. His final measurement of the mechanical equivalent of heat was 772.55, a number Joule also requested be engraved on his gravestone. The result of Joule's final experiments by the direct method of friction presented in this paper agreed almost exactly with the value he had found in 1850. "It appeared, therefore, that the cause of the discrepancy lay in the unit of resistance. Any doubt as to this was soon resolved, for Rowland, in the same year as Joule's last paper was published… showed that the standard of resistance was about 1 per cent smaller than the committee of 1864 had intended it to be, and that, making this correction, the results of his own experiments by the methods of friction and of electrical heating agreed very closely both among themselves and also with Joule's value, 772.5. "The exactness of his work has been amply verified" (DNB, 30, 216). CONDITION & DETAILS: London: Harrison and Sons. Ex-libris bearing a tiny on the title page and a pencilled notation; no other markings. Full volume, Parts I & II, complete. 4to. (288 x 213mm). Part I: [4], 12, [318], Part II: [18], 319-826, [4]. 70 plates. Handsomely rebound in aged calf. 5 raised bands at the spine, each gilt-ruled; gilt-tooled fleur de lis at the spine. Red and black, gilt-lettered spine labels. Tightly bound; new endpapers. Bright and clean throughout (including plates). Occasional and minor small closed tears at the margin. Near fine.

Superb long Autograph Letter Signed in German (with translation) to FREDERICK WILLIAM IV (1819-1901, Queen of Great Britain)

1878 - (1795-1861, King of Prussia, Godfather to Edward VII) thanking him effusively for his letter and "for the touching way in which you expressed your opinions, and please rest assured that I shall continue to reciprocate openly and unchangingly your inestimable friendship. I shared every moment of your journey to St Petersburg . and am now longing to know that you are safe . in the arms of your dear Queen . It may have been the Tempter who reminded me of the dangers and uncertainties of this mortal life . he also gives me through your kindness . the most visible proofs of your protection and the most wonderful ways of attaining comfort and strength. Such a way was also provided by the visit of my brother ERNEST and his young wife ." (ERNST II, Duke of Saxe Coburg & Gotha, 1818-1893, Prince Albert's elder brother), married on 3rd May 1842, ALEXANDRINE (1820-1904, daughter of Leopold, Grand Duke of Baden), "She completely won my heart, and no-one can possess a purer, simpler, more loving or more faithful heart than she . Your Majesty must have felt the same pain as I did upon hearing the news of the sudden appalling death of the Duke of ORLEANS ." (Ferdinand, Duke of Orleans, 1810-1842, Prince Royal and eldest son of Louis Philippe I, King of the French, died in a carriage accident on 13th July), "The letters I have had from Paris testify to the immense anguish and deep distress that fills the whole of the Royal family .", she then changes the subject and says that "Your Majesties will perceive that my desire to comply with your wishes does have its limits: despite your order you have had an answer from me . The Prince of Wales is doing very well, as also his sister and has received the greetings from his royal godfather .", she ends by sending greeting from herself and her mother, 5 sides 4to, on crested mourning paper, Windsor Castle, 3rd August

Geometry and Optics of Ancient Architecture

1878. First Edition . PENNETHORNE, John. The Geometry and Optics of Ancient Architecture, Illustrated by Examples from Thebes, Athens, and Rome. London and Edinburgh: Williams and Norgate, 1878. Elephant folio, modern three-quarter dark green morocco, raised bands. $4000.First edition of PennethorneÂ’s magnum opus, richly illustrated with 12 double-page and 42 full-page lithographed plates (54 of 55), nine beautifully color-printed, and numerous in-text woodcuts and diagrams. “Extremely rare” (Blackmer); one of only a few hundred copies printed at the authorÂ’s expense.Architect and mathematician John Pennethorne was one of the first to prove that the classical architecture of Greece was based not upon strict rectilinear parallels but rather on subtly curved lines that heightened the sense of proportion and symmetry. The Greek architects “changed the first figure of their design into one which should produce to the eye an apparent symmetry and accuracy of outline, or, in the words of Plato, ‘The artists, bidding farewell to truth, change the real symmetry, and accommodate to images such commensurations as are only apparently beautiful.” Pennethorne arrived at these conclusions independently, in 1837, very near the time that architects Joseph Hoffer and Schaubert were investigating and publishing on the same topic. Subsequent work by F.C. Penrose provided Pennethorne with additional measurements upon which he could “set forth in minute detail his theory of the manner in which the actual proportions of the original design were adapted to the optical conditions of correct perspective” (DNB). John RobinsonÂ’s expert illustrations adorn the text, ten of which are intricately colored and depict the complicated designs of the Greek columns. Without Plate II of Part I, a color plate depicting Egyptian columns. Blackmer 1280. Text and plates bright. A magnificent work, handsomely bound.
