Shores of the Polar sea. A narrative of the Arctic expedition of 1875-6.

London M. Ward & Co. 1878 - Bound in publisher's decorative cloth. 1st ed. Folio, 48 x 34 cm. All edges gilt. 83 pages illustrations, color map. 16 color mounted chromolithograph plates, each preceded by a leaf with descriptive letterpress. Dr. Edward Moss, the ship's surgeon and artist for the H.M.S. Alert, produced this book 2 years after the expedition's return. Moss sailed with Captain George S. Nares' Arctic Expedition aimed at reaching the North Pole or the highest latitude possible. They ventured up Baffin Bay, into what later would be named Nares straight, along the northern shores of Ellesmere Island (called Grinnell Land on the map) and Western Greenland. The expedition became trapped in ice and was forced to travel by sledge. Markham's sledge party made achieved the furthest north point, in the ice covered Lincoln Sea (83 20' 26"N). Scurvy sapped the crew's energy and nearly doomed the expedition. Moss provides vivid views of Greenlanders, Musk Ox, sledge parties, and the rituals of the crew. The lithographic plates are especially attractive. NMM 1, 954; Books on Ice, 4.7. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Shores of the Polar Sea. A Narrative of the Arctic Expedition of 1875-76. Illustrated with Sixteen Chromo=Lithographs and numerous Engravings from Drawings made on the Spot by the Author.

London, Marcus Ward & Co., 1878. Folio. (49 x 35 cm.). Orig. full pictotial cloth. Richly gilt. Spine-ends repaired. First inner hinge strenghtened. Edges gilt. Halftitle with a stamp. (1-7)8-83 pp. With 16 mounted, fine chromolithographed plates, many textillustrations, 1 map. Title-page printed in red/black. Internally clean fine. First edition. "It is believed by both Artist and Publishers that a much fuller and more vivid idea of Arctic scenery can be produced by careful chromo-lithographic fac-similes of the original drawings made by Dr Edward L. Moss during the Expedition, than by any rendering in black and white. The sketches are not designed to illustrate the progress of the Expedition, or any stirring events in its history, so much as the appearance of the strange and desolate country by the shores of which the ships slowly steamed, the wonderful phenomena of the sky, and the effects of light and shade produced by a midnight sun, or a mid-day moon, on the ice-bound rocks which form the scenery of the region. They are here reproduced ... in order to make them more generally accessible ... It must be added that the sketches are all the work of one hand - Dr Edward L. Moss, who served on board the Alert in the Arctic Expedition which left England on the 29th of May, 1875, and entered the Arctic regions on the 4th of July in the same year. Although the Expedition failed in reaching the Pole - which was among the sailing orders on which it started - it yet achieved results of the highest scientific and geographic value. Of what kind was the life they led - what strange experiences they gained of natural phenomena, and the freaks of light on ice and rock - the accompanying drawings illustrate with a vividness and fullness never before arrived at in sketches of Arctic life."         Menschliches, Allzumenschliches. Ein Buch für freie Geister (Human all too Human. A Book for Free Spirits).

Ernst Schmeitzner, Chemnitz 1878 - Half title + TP + [i] = Vorrede + [iii] = Inhalt + half title + [3] - 377 + [378] = Printer's information + [379]-[380] = Printer's ads. Octavo. First Edition, First Issue, (Schaberg 29). An Original Wrap Copy of Nietzsche's First "Aphoristic" Work - His Introduction of "Perspectivism"INCLUDING all of the important issue points, one or more of which are usually lacking: the initial half title before the full title page, the advertisements at the end and the "eere" correction, cut and pasted by Schmeitzner over "menon" (a non-word) to create "meere" (sea) on p. 290 (aphorism 431). Only 489 copies of this first edition, first issue, as the remaining 511 of the original 1000 first edition copies were sold to E. W. Fritzsch in 1886 for use in a new edition with new title page and without the ads. Thus, this copy is extremely rare in any state. This is the first book by Nietzsche where he is listed simply as Friedrich Nietzsche rather than as "prof." In fact, Human, All Too Human constituted such a radical departure in style and content for Nietzsche that he first proposed to his publisher that it be released anonymously or with a pseudonym. Schmeitzner, however, would not allow it. Reluctant to construct a philosophical "system," and sensitive to the importance of style in philosophic writing, Nietzsche composed these works as a series of several hundred aphorisms, a departure from his style up to this point. Much of the work is devoted to what one might now call "psychoanalytical" insights into the nature of common human experience and the origins of our human valuations. At the time, serious inquiry into such things as the nature of dreams, the meaning of pity or the phenomenon of laughter had no place in the field of philosophy. Human All Too Human also contains Nietzsche's reflections upon cultural and psychological phenomena in reference to individuals' organic and physiological constitutions. The idea of power sporadically appears as an explanatory principle, but Nietzsche tends at this time to invoke hedonistic considerations of pleasure and pain in his explanations of cultural and psychological phenomena. It is here, too, that Nietzsche's famous epistemological "perspectivism" is first broached: the view that "truths" are nothing more than interpretations of reality, formed from different perspectives and more or less successful in their struggle against competing "truths." Like the four books to follow, the present work is addressed to the "free spirits of Europe." It was the present work that finally divided Nietzsche from his greatest friend, Richard Wagner, more and more in Nietzsche's mind motivated by only the most simplistic greed for power, and betraying the promise of his art. Publisher's original front wrap with some wear and reinforced corners along with the partial remains of a bookseller's ticket sein ???? Joan 26 März 1881".         A Few Choice Words to The Public, With New and Original Poems Written by the Author / Her Second Book

Julia A. Moore, Grand Rapids, Mich. 1878 - Not a reprint but an original, 4-1/4 X 6-inch , 56-page (softcover) pamphlet in semi-gloss gray wraps. Booklet is complete, though rear wrap is being held in place only by a small piece of clear ("Scotch"?) tape applied long ago. Printed by C.M. Loomis, Grand Rapids, Mich., and originally priced at 25 cents. Julia Ann Moore, the "Sweet Singer of Michigan" (1847-1920) was America's challenger to Scotland's William McGonagall as the 19th Century's master of bad poetry in English -- a requirement for contention being, of course, that the poet couldn't be working tongue-in-cheek. Born Julia Ann Davis, she started writing poetry in her mid-teens, mostly in response to the deaths of children she knew, though (like McGonagall) any newspaper account of disaster could inspire her. At age 17, she married Frederick Franklin Moore, a farmer. She ran a small store and, over the years, bore ten children, of whom six survived to adulthood. Moore's first book of verse, "The Sentimental Song Book" was published in 1876 by C. M. Loomis of Grand Rapids, and quickly went into a second printing. A copy ended up in the hands of James F. Ryder, a Cleveland publisher, who republished it under the title "The Sweet Singer of Michigan Salutes the Public," sending out review copies to newspapers across the country, with a cover letter filled with mocking "faint praise." Contemporary reviewers had fun with her tear-jerking efforts, the Rochester Democrat commenting that "Shakespeare, could he read it, would be glad that he was dead." The Hartford Times added that "To meet such steady and unremitting demands on the lachrymal ducts one must be provided, as Sam Weller suspected Job Trotter was, 'with a main, as is allus let on.'" The collection -- in effect the last gasp of the school of obituary poetry that had been broadly popular in the U. S. through the middle of the 19th Century -- became a curious best-seller. Moore staged a reading with song and orchestral accompaniment in 1877 at a Grand Rapids opera house. She managed to interpret jeering as criticism of the orchestra. Moore's second collection, "A Few Choice Words to the Public" appeared in 1878, "but found few buyers," Wikipedia reports. Moore gave a second public performance at the same venue in late 1878, by which time she'd deduced the praise directed at her was ironic, the jeering sincere. She began by admitting her poetry was "partly full of mistakes" and that "literary is a work very hard to do." Moore ended the show by telling the audience "You have come here and paid twenty-five cents to see a fool; I receive seventy-five dollars and see a whole house full of fools," reports Thomas J. Riedlinger in "Mortal Refrains: The Complete Collected Poetry, Prose, and Songs of Julia A. Moore, The Sweet Singer of Michigan" (MSU Press, 1998.) Her husband reportedly then forbade her to publish more poetry, moving the family 100 miles north to Manton in 1882, where they made a success, he with an orchard and sawmill, she with a store. A year after her husband's death in 1914, Mrs. Moore, 68, published in pamphlet form her earlier newspaper serial "Sunshine and Shadow," a novella set during the American Revolution, which concludes when a farmer facing foreclosure is rescued by his wife's decision to publish her secret cache of fiction. The works of Julia Moore are now available almost exclusively in later reprints. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Money

1878. First Edition . WALKER, Francis. Money. London: Macmillan, 1878. Octavo, original red cloth. $1500.First edition of this work on money supply and international bimetallism, in original cloth. In this widely influential series of lectures Walker addresses the money supply question, a topic of vital importance during an era of continued industrial expansion. Money, Walker argues, includes banknotes and anything else used as a medium of exchange. He urges countries to adopt the system of international bimetallism (the use of silver and gold) as the truest path towards fiscal responsibility. In addition to these and other theoretical contributions, Walker helped to systematize and greatly improve the teaching of economics while president of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. ""Unquestionably the most prominent and best known of American [economic] writers"" (F.W. Tausig, quoted in DAB X:343-44). Bookplate.Interior quite nice, only minor rubbing and soiling to cloth.         Herrn Eugen Dühring's Umwälzung der Wissenschaft. Von Friedrich Engels. [I. Philosophie.] II. Politische Oekonomie. Sozialismus.

Leipzig, Genossenschafts-Buchdruckerei, [1877-]1878. - 8vo. VIII, 274 pp. Contemporary blue cloth. Extremely rare first separate printings of Engels's "Anti-Dühring" (properly, "Mr Eugen Dühring's Revolution in Science"), previously published only in serialized form in the "Vorwärts" between January 1877 and July 1878 and today considered one of the most influential Marxist texts. At the suggestion of Liebknecht, who had his eye on the generally poor socialist readers unwilling to spend the cost of an entire book at one go, the work was then separately released in two fascicules: the first appeared in mid-September 1877, while the second came out together with the book edition in July 1878. The present volume unites these two separate instalments, using the title page of the second and including the preface - issued with the second part - before the first, so as to approximate the appearance of the complete book edition. - Prompted by a need to counter the growing influence of Dühring's anti-Marxist brand of socialism on German social democracy, the polemic was - as Engels wrote to Marx - an attempt "to produce an encyclopedic survey of our conception of the philosophical, natural-science and historical problems". While the term "scientific socialism" was not in fact coined by Engels, it was in this work that he invested it with the meaning as it is generally understood today: by praising it as the most epoch-making achievement of Marx's work and the theoretical expression of the proletarian movement, (pp. 175, 236), Engels here prepared the ground for Marxism as a doctrine. - The preface (usually bound between pp. 120 and 121) is dated "June 1878". As nearly always only one of the two possible title pages is included, namely in this case that of the second instalment, with the heading of part one, "I. Philosophie", supplied in ink by a contemporary owner above the printed caption "II. Politische Oekonomie. Sozialismus" (the book edition was given a new title reading "Philosophie. Politische Oekonomie. Sozialismus"). - The typographical errors have been corrected in the text by a contemporary hand in pencil. Some browning as common due to paper. Very minor rubbing to extremeties; a very good copy. Stammhammer I, 72, 4. Marx/Engels-Erstdrucke 41. Das Werk von Marx und Engels in der Literatur der deutschen Sozialdemokratie 189 & 212 (and cf. 213). Rubel 76. Ex libris Marx/Engels Nrn. 137 (first instalment only, 120 pp., 1877) and 138 (the book edition, 1878, with the new, complete title). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1878 - 1878 Original Paperback Wisden, Facsimile Spine, Very Good.

Hi, This lot is an Original 1878 Wisden Paperback with facsimile spine, The last of the rarer first 15 books. This is in Very Good condition, for the year. The covers are original and less faded than most 1878 which all have a sheen to them (same as in '79) there is a line across the front cover from the top left corner to a third of the way down from the right hand side. It has a couple of light marks too, the rear cover (Oxford vs Cambridge which is incorrect in many facsimiles) is in very good condition. Internally very nice indeed, a small amount of foxing to the odd page and red speckles to the page block. A very nice first 15 Wisden.

The Life of Yakoob Beg; Athalik Ghazi, and Badaulet, Ameer of Kashgar.

London: W. H. Allen & Co., 1878 - Octavo. Original red cloth, rebacked with the original spine laid down, title gilt to spine, blind panelling to the boards, dun surface-paper endpapers. A little rubbed at the extremities, perhaps a quarter of an inch lacking head and tail of the spine, hinges slightly cracked, light toning, overall a very good copy. Folding coloured map frontispiece. First edition of this uncommon life of this "remarkable Muslim adventurer" (Hopkirk, The Great Game, p. 322) from Piskent, Kokand – now Uzbekistan – who became ruler of Kashgaria. He signed treaties of amity and commerce with both Russia and Britain, but crucially failed to get them to support him against the Chinese. He died in 1877, after his army had been routed by the Emperor's invasion force – "whose leisurely progress included the planting and harvesting of its own crops", taking three years to reach Kashgar – most likely the victim of a poison plot: "Four of Yakoob's sons and two of his grandsons fell into the hands of the Chinese. One son was beheaded, one grandson died, and the rest were sentenced to be castrated and sent as slaves to the soldiers on the Amoor" (Giles, A Chinese Biographical Dictionary). The author was one of the founders, and First editor, of the Asiatic Quarterly Review and a leading publicist of Empire and Asian affairs. [Attributes: First Edition]

Die Arabischen Handschriften der Herzoglichen Bibliothek Zu Gotha. Auf Befehl Sr. Hoheit des Herzogs Ernst II von Sachsen-Coburg-Gotha verzeichnet.

Gotha: Friedrich Andreas Perthes, 1878-92 - 5 volumes, octavo (231 × 150 mm). Near-contemporary black half morocco, marbled boards, title gilt to spines, edges sprinkled, turquoise endpapers, original wrappers bound in. From the library of British Arabist and colonial agent Col. S. B. Miles (1838–1914), with printed bookplates noting his widow's bequest of the collection to Bath Public Library in 1920, and associated manuscript shelf-marks and blind-stamps as usual. Light shelf wear, pale browning, occasional small blind stamps, a scatter of foxing fore-edge, front and back only, a very good set. German and Arabic text. First editions. Uncommon in complete state, OCLC shows perhaps fewer than 20 sets completing worldwide; Copac lists just two: SOAS and Glasgow, the Oxford set lacking the much later fifth volume; no other copies traced at auction. The five volumes comprise the catalogue of the extraordinary collection of Arabic manuscripts at the ducal library at Gotha, most of which were originally purchased on behalf of Augustus, duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg by the German Orientalist Urlich Jaspar Seetzen (1767–1811) during his residence and travels in Constantinople, Aleppo, Damascus, Jerusalem and Cairo. The compiler Wilhelm Pertsch (1832–1899) had studied oriental languages in Berlin and Tübingen, with a nine-month Studienreise taking in Paris, London and Oxford. He began work at the ducal library at Schloss Friedenstein in 1855, the start of nearly 25 years spent working with the more than 3,000 Oriental manuscripts in the library, which eventually resulted in the five volumes offered here, as well as another three covering the Persian and Turkish collections. Pertsch was also responsible for listing the Persian and Turkish manuscripts in the Prussian State Library in Berlin. In 1879 he was appointed chief librarian at Gotha and in 1883 made director of the scientific works at Friedenstein; he was also made an honorary member of the Berlin, Leipzig and Göttingen Academies of Science. Pertsch's reputation rests upon his exemplary catalogues of the oriental manuscripts at Gotha and Berlin. This important collection remains intact at the Forschungsbibliothek Burg Friedenstein.         In the Time of Constantine - Alma-Tadema, 1878.

Prijs: ?575,- (incl. lijst).

LA MÉTHODE GRAPHIQUE DANS LES SCIENCES EXPÉRIMENTALES.; ET PARTICULIÈREMENT EN PHYSIOLOGIE ET EN MÉDECINE

      G. Masson, Paris 1878 - 8vo., xix, 673 pp., errata, 348 illustrations from charts, graphs, and drawings. Publisher's red cloth, titled in black ink on the upper cover and spine. There is faint foxing on the foredge, a slight smudge to the red cloth near the lower corner of the front cover and slight creasing at the board tips only. A very good and bright copy. [with] Marey, E.J. LA MÉTHODE GRAPHIQUE DANS LES SCIENCES EXPÉRIMENTALES. Augumenté d'un supplément sur LE DÉVELOPEMENT DE LA MÉTHODE GRAPHIQUE PAR LA PHOTOGRAPHIE. Paris: G. Masson, 1885. Deuxième Tirage. 8vo., [iii], xix, 673 pp., errata, 383 illustrations; [supplement] vi, [i], 52 pp., 35 illustrations. Original printed wrappers which are lacking a portion from the front panel with the partial loss of a single letter "L" from the title; scattered foxing and minor wear. Marey pioneered the use of graphic recording systems and devices, many of his own manufacture, to record data that was not possible merely by observation. He applied his methodology to the respiratory, circulatory and musculature systems, the study of human and animal locomotion, etc., notating in detail his findings and the sources from which he built upon. He conceived "of the body as an animate machine run by a complex motor whose functions could be reduced to the newly discovered laws of thermodynamics - Marey chose to study the body's most manifest form of energy: movement." The implications of his work "changed how the working body was conceived and how it was represented in both the social and aesthetic domains. He provided a scientific basis for developing the endurance of the soldier, and for the creation of a national physical education program in France. His instruments were used to analyze worker's movements and even to rationalize a physiological basis for psychology." see: Braun, Marta, ENCYCLOPEDIA OF NINETEENTH-CENTURY PHOTOGRAPHY, p. 890 - 891. It was these graphic methods that lead Marey to his invention of the chronophotograph, the precursor of cinematography, which he enumerates and illustrates in his important supplement to the second edition.
