Les Oiseaux De La Chine (Two Volumes)

Les Oiseaux De La Chine: G. Masson, 1877 Text volume is 573 pages, indexed. Atlas volume contains 124 hand colored lithographic plates with tissue guards, and are tipped in on bound paper tongues. Volumes are bound in original rust colored cloth, with gilt stamped lettering and ruled black stamped decoration. An additional gilt and black stamped image of a bird can be seen on the top cover of the Atlas Volume. Top edges are gilded. Ankler (1938/1973, #113) describes this as an important review of the Chinese Empire discussing 807 species of which 249 are peculiar to China. The plates printed by Becquet of Paris are described as "finely drawn and colored," a sentiment echoed by Zimmer (1926, page 159). Text volume shows rubbing along bottom edges of covers, with a little wear at heal. There are some slight and small blemishes and other very light wear on the covers. There is a small booksellers sticker at top of front paste down, and slight residue where book plate was removed. Front free end page shows a few edge chips. Atlas volume has been nicely rebacked and retains most of original cloth covers including all lettering and decoration. There is a little rubbing along bottom edges of covers. This volume also shows a small booksellers sticker at top of front paste down, and slight residue where book plate was removed. Free end leaves show a couple of edge chips. Moisture stains affecting the upper portions of first non-plate leaves. All plates remain in at least Very Good condition, with 104 of the 124 plates being nearly Fine or better in condition. The remaining plates show light moisture stains up to a half inch from the top edge, affecting blank surface only and NOT affecting any of the images. Plates are tipped onto binding tongues, and some show a little separation from these tongues. Both volumes are complete and have been collated, and both volumes remain tight and are otherwise very clean. . First Edition. Cloth - Hard Cover. Good/No Jacket.

THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS, or What Alice Found There (Sequel to Alice's Adventures In Wonderland

London: Macmillan, 1877. Carroll, Lewis [Charles Lutwidge Dodgson]. THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS, or what Alice Found There. London: Macmillan, 1877. Early Edition, published five years after the first edition. PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE AUTHOR TO THIS NEPHEW, inscribed on the half-title: "Bertram James Collingwood/ from his affte. Uncle/ the Author/ August. 7. 1878." Original cloth, all edges gilt. GOOD only, having endured old and inexpert attempts at repair to the spine and inner hinges. There is some dark smudging to the last eight pages but the covers are relatively clean. While not glistening with eye appeal, this is an important copy having been presented to one of the author's two beloved nephews (the other became his biographer). Bertram James Collingwood [1871- 1934] shared his uncle's love for mathematics and logic (illuminating letters between the two which discuss these subjects can be found in various institutions). When Dodgson made his funeral arrangements, he arranged for Bertram to receive (in 1898) that portion of his library related to Mathematics, Science, and Medicine. Like his uncle, Collingwood became a professor and had a brilliant career at University (Cambridge) but, unlike his uncle, he was a fanatical sportsman and is best known today for having donated the "Collingwood Cup" which is still the championship trophy for Irish University Football, celebrating its 100th birthday in 2014. While we have seen numerous copies of the author's inscribed books, those actually presented to members of his family are highly uncommon, especially in original cloth. In a splendid new quarter-morocco slipcase.. Inscribed By Author. Decorative Cloth. Good. Illus. by John Tenniel.

[Smetham, James- Autograph Letter] to Dante Gabriel Rossetti

Voluminous four-page letter by James Smetham, Pre-Raphaelite painter, close member of the Pre-Raphaelite circle and personal friend of Gabriel, who arduously tried to promote his paintings throughout their association lasting many decades. Smetham, also an essayist and art critic, suffered terribly from mental illness and sustained a final breakdown in 1877, living the rest of his life in seclusion. An early letter, dated Dec. 20, 1864, over 600 words, in which Smetham discusses painting practices and techniques, and thanks Rossetti for sending information on dealers, "perhaps the best effect has been to impress on me... the power of the "Portfolio.'" Rossetti's letter "led me to revise the idea.. of the use of water color as a medium ofr small designs..." etc., and "...I find that a watercolor design takes me twice or three times as long as one of these studies in oil." And interestingly, regarding the intrusion of photography on portrait painting: "I am almost free from anxiety as to market- a thing that since Photography walked off with portraiture I have often had to contend against." He is excited to see Rossetti in the studio and would like him to see some new studies and 'variety' in method. Discusses etching, the 'misadventure of the binder... the stupid binder, etc..." "The prospect of the Photography from your designs gives me much delight- there is nothing in Art I should value more.." etc. The two pages, once joined at the fold, have neatly severed. Together with a William Michael Rossetti holograph eight-line explanation and short bio of James Smethan on a separate sheet (small corner torn away and lost), as was WMR's habit, in annotating various autograph letters with separate notes. A truly great assemblage of historical and artistic PRB content.

Grapes and Grape Vines of California published under the auspices of the California State Vinicultural Association; oleographed by Wm. Harring from original water color drawings by Miss Hannah Millard.

Folio. San Francisco: Bosqui, 1877. Folio, 19 x 13 inches, a single plate (The Flame Tokay). With the overprinting of the Italian Swiss Colony imprint on the plate. In very good condition. A single plate from the masterpiece of California color printing which is perhaps the rarest and one of the most expensive American color plate books ever published. Fewer than 15 copies are known to exist (of which 6 are complete), as the book was not well subscribed when it was issued in parts and very few subscribers completed their sets. Copies are thought to have been destroyed in a fire at Bosqui’s plant along with the original paintings. Italian Swiss Colony issued several of the plates as a promotional or advertising piece, presumably getting them from Bosqui’s overstock when his edition failed to sell. Zamorano Select #34: “Both as a work on viticulture and as a color-plate book, Grapes and Grape Vines of California was was an unprecedented achievement for a California press.”

Autograph manuscript written in ink, with two pencil sketches, signed with his butterfly monogram.

      N. p., [probably early 1877]. - 8vo. 3 pp. on bifolium. To "my dear Black": "Noch nicht! noch nicht! my dear Black! I am a little behind hand - curious aint it! That confounded Peacock Room has nearly ruined me and I have had to work frightfully to make up for it. It will be all right directly of course but I am woefully pushed. - Beseech HRH to be indulgent and appoint some day next week - say Saturday or Friday afternoon at about 5 'o'clock and I will try to be ready for her and shall be so enchanted to see her interest in what I have been doing - I think you will like the pictures - manage this my dear Black for your [xxx] [Whistler's butterfly monogram]. Just write a line to say it is all right". - The letter discusses a proposed visit from Princess Louise, the daughter of Queen Victoria and wife of the Marquis of Lorne. The Princess was herself an artist - a sculptor of note - and Whistler's correspondence indicates she took a keen interest in his work. The two pencil sketches appear to have been drawn before the letter was written. If they are by Whistler, we can assume that they have something to do with a commission he was working on for Princess Louise. The drawings seem to be preliminary sketches for a crest, which features a dog and crossed swords. - The stupendously opulent and beautiful Peacock Room was painted by James A. McNeill Whistler during late 1876 and early 1877. The entire room is decorated in oil colour and gold on wood, leather and canvas, its Orientalist theme crowned by Whistler's painting The Princess from the Land of Porcelain. The Peacock Room is now installed in the Freer Gallery of Art (Smithsonian Institution) in Washington D.C., but was originally designed for use as the dining room in the London residence of Frederick R. Leyland, a wealthy English shipping magnate. In 1904, after the house had changed hands, the American Charles L. Freer, founder of the Freer Gallery of Art, was able to purchase the contents of the room, have it dismantled and shipped to his home in Detroit, where it was installed in an addition to his home in 1905. In 1919 it was once more dismantled and transported to its permanent location in the Freer Gallery in Washington, D.C. - Slightly stained. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The career of Jesus Christ: Being a supplement to the author's Science of the Bible.

Streator, IL: Free Press Publishing House 8vo (20.7 cm, 8.2"). Frontis. (incl. in pagination), 52, [2] pp.; [60 (20 blank)] ff.. 1877 Uncommon sole edition of this Freethinker interpretation of the New Testament, focusing on an astrological/astronomical analysis in which Jesus personifies "the annual Sun" and the events of the Gospels overall serve as a representation of the phenomena of the seasons. Wooley uses these "discoveries" to claim that Christianity as a religion is "a fraud of the blackest dye" (p. 51), adding that the working classes (former slaves explicitly included) are duped and oppressed by the capitalists (Northern and Southern) who encourage them to besot themselves with religion, whiskey, and tobacco rather than work towards real, liberating knowledge. The printed Career is followed in this little volume by an extended manuscript section containing neatly written excerpts from Wooley's Science of the Bible or an Analysis of the Hebrew Mythology. Contemporary half calf over textured cloth, spine with gilt-stamped leather title-label and gilt-ruled raised bands; front cover detached, leather scuffed. All page edges marbled. Upper portion of front free endpaper torn away; two front fly-leaves partially excised. Back free endpaper with pencilled owner's name. Printed portion very slightly age-toned, with faint creasing to first section.

        Voyage aux Etats-Unis

1877. Oblong folio. (13 1/4 x 18 1/2 inches). 19 original watercolours (11 3/8 x 7 7/8 inches and smaller), mounted recto and verso of 7 thin card leaves (one page mounted with 4 drawings, one with 3 and one with 2, the others with 1 drawing per page, the final page blank), all painted by a single hand, and all with the location identified in ink in the lower margin of each drawing or on the mount just below. Modern blue half morocco gilt, blue morocco title label centrally-placed on upper cover 'Voyage aux / Etats-Unis / 1876-77' A fine series of original watercolour views of Lake George, N.Y., and elsewhere - including one watercolour of Central Park, New York. From the heading ('Voyage aux Etats-Unis / 1876-1877') on the first page of this album, as well as from the wording of the captions to the drawings, it is clear that these highly accomplished watercolours are the work of a French-speaking visitor to North America in 1876-1877. They include 14 views of Lake George and its vicinity (including one of Caldwell [now Lake George Village] and one of Tea Island). Also included is a single view of a rocky outcrop and trees in Central Park, another of Glenn Falls on the Hudson, and a third of the Montmorency Falls just outside Quebec, as well as two fine but rather unexpected Swiss views of Amphion, Lake Geneva (both dated 1877).

The career of Jesus Christ: Being a supplement to the author's Science of the Bible

Annals and Antiquities of Rajasthan, or the Central and Western Rajpoot States of India ... Second edition

Calcutta: [printed by G.C. De. The New Sanskrit Press] published by Harimohan Mookerjee, 1877. 2 volumes, quarto. (10 3/4 x 8 3/4 inches). Pp.[i]-xxxiii, [1], [1]-639 [1]; [1-4], [i]-xxvi, [1]-674. 2 folding letterpress tables. 16 plates by N.C. Bose, S.C. Dass, T.N. Dev and others after Captain Waugh (6), Ghafsi (5) and others (including: 1 folding engraved cross-sectional map and 1 folding plate of script printed on recto and verso), occasional illustrations. Original green cloth, covers blocked in blind, the flat spines divided into five compartments with double fillets in blind, lettered in gilt in the second and fourth compartments Very rare Calcutta edition of this valuable early study of the history, beliefs and topography of Rajasthan: only a single incomplete copy is recorded by OCLC. No complete copies of this Calcutta edition are recorded by OCLC, and no copy is listed as having sold at auction in the past thirty-five years. The plates are of particular interest. The plates are after the London edition of 1829-1832, and provide an interesting insight into the work of engravers working in the region at the time: little is known or recorded of the work of native engravers working in India in the mid-19th century. The author went to India as a cadet in the Bengal army of the British East India Company in 1799. He commanded the escort attached to the Resident at Sindhia from 1812 to 1817. In the latter year he was in charge of the Intelligence Department which largely contributed to the break up of the Maratha Confederacy in the Third Anglo-Maratha War, and was of great assistance in the campaign in Rajputana. In 1818 he was appointed political agent for the states of western Rajputana, where he successfully acted as an arbitrator between rival chieftains, settling their feuds. While Resident in Rajputana, Tod collected materials for his Annals and Antiquities of Rajasthan , a work of great importance for South Asian scholars. Tod presents the contemporary geography and a detailed history of Rajputana along with the history of the Rajput clans who ruled most of the area at that time. Tod's work drew on local archives, Rajput traditional sources, and monuments such as the Edicts of Asoka found at Junagadh. He returned to England in 1823 with a wealth of material for what became a fundamental study of Rajasthan's historical development. The first edition was published in London between 1829 and 1832, with a total of fifty plates. Most of the images were engraved by Edward Finden from originals from various sources - most notably a local artist whose name is given as Ghafsi, or Captain Waugh, a friend and kinsman of the author. The present edition demonstrates the esteem in which the work was held in the region, even fifty years later. A more immediate token was given by the ruler of Udaipur, who, when the work first appeared, renamed a village in Tod's honour: Barsawada became "Todgarh" (or Tods fort) - a name that it still bears today. OCLC 504180584 (British Library copy, imperfect: i.e. BL integrated catalogue, shelf mark 9057.cc.12).

Map of the City of Brooklyn, and village of Williamsburgh, showing the size of blocks and width of streets as laid out by the Commissioners, the old Farm lines Water line and all recent changes in streets. Laid out from accurate surveys & documents

New York: Benj. S.D. Demarest, 1877. Lithographic map, with original colour, in eight sections with linen joints, four sections linen-backed, two backed with marbled paper and two mounted onto the inner covers of a pair of half calf cloth-covered boards, the boards expertly rebacked and cornered, 33 3/8 x 47 3/8 inches, in modern cloth box. A very fine large-scale map of Brooklyn, depicting the city in the middle of the 19th century, with detailed information about the city's early settlers As the map itself makes clear: this is a reissue of a map that was originally published in 1846 by Richard Butt. It was transferred by George A. Buckingham Jr., in February 1877, and photo-lithographed by Robert A. Welcke. The addition of colour not only adds greatly to the attractiveness of the image, it also allows the boundaries of the early land holdings (most marked with the names of their original owners) to be clearly seen despite the presence of the grids of the modern streets. A fascinating historical record of Brooklyn's past. Phillips, Maps of America , p.176.

1877. Hi, This lot is an 1877 Original Paperback Wisden. It has tape to the spine but it is in Very Good Condition for the year. The tape holds the book together well and so is tightly bound. The covers are a bit dark with marks but you do not see 1877 covers too often. Inside however the book is nice and bright and clean, a very rare book. No restoration other than the tape applied to the spine. A hard year to find. 14th Edition.

(C. Sieber-Lehmann, Lemma ?Burgunderkriege?, in: HLS). Karl war im Prinzip den Eidgenossen durchaus freundlich gesinnt.
