Annals and Antiquities of Rajasthan, or the Central and Western Rajpoot States of India ... Second edition

Calcutta: [printed by G.C. De. The New Sanskrit Press] published by Harimohan Mookerjee, 1877. 2 volumes, quarto. (10 3/4 x 8 3/4 inches). Pp.[i]-xxxiii, [1], [1]-639 [1]; [1-4], [i]-xxvi, [1]-674. 2 folding letterpress tables. 16 plates by N.C. Bose, S.C. Dass, T.N. Dev and others after Captain Waugh (6), Ghafsi (5) and others (including: 1 folding engraved cross-sectional map and 1 folding plate of script printed on recto and verso), occasional illustrations. Original green cloth, covers blocked in blind, the flat spines divided into five compartments with double fillets in blind, lettered in gilt in the second and fourth compartments Very rare Calcutta edition of this valuable early study of the history, beliefs and topography of Rajasthan: only a single incomplete copy is recorded by OCLC. No complete copies of this Calcutta edition are recorded by OCLC, and no copy is listed as having sold at auction in the past thirty-five years. The plates are of particular interest. The plates are after the London edition of 1829-1832, and provide an interesting insight into the work of engravers working in the region at the time: little is known or recorded of the work of native engravers working in India in the mid-19th century. The author went to India as a cadet in the Bengal army of the British East India Company in 1799. He commanded the escort attached to the Resident at Sindhia from 1812 to 1817. In the latter year he was in charge of the Intelligence Department which largely contributed to the break up of the Maratha Confederacy in the Third Anglo-Maratha War, and was of great assistance in the campaign in Rajputana. In 1818 he was appointed political agent for the states of western Rajputana, where he successfully acted as an arbitrator between rival chieftains, settling their feuds. While Resident in Rajputana, Tod collected materials for his Annals and Antiquities of Rajasthan , a work of great importance for South Asian scholars. Tod presents the contemporary geography and a detailed history of Rajputana along with the history of the Rajput clans who ruled most of the area at that time. Tod's work drew on local archives, Rajput traditional sources, and monuments such as the Edicts of Asoka found at Junagadh. He returned to England in 1823 with a wealth of material for what became a fundamental study of Rajasthan's historical development. The first edition was published in London between 1829 and 1832, with a total of fifty plates. Most of the images were engraved by Edward Finden from originals from various sources - most notably a local artist whose name is given as Ghafsi, or Captain Waugh, a friend and kinsman of the author. The present edition demonstrates the esteem in which the work was held in the region, even fifty years later. A more immediate token was given by the ruler of Udaipur, who, when the work first appeared, renamed a village in Tod's honour: Barsawada became "Todgarh" (or Tods fort) - a name that it still bears today. OCLC 504180584 (British Library copy, imperfect: i.e. BL integrated catalogue, shelf mark 9057.cc.12).

Map of the City of Brooklyn, and village of Williamsburgh, showing the size of blocks and width of streets as laid out by the Commissioners, the old Farm lines Water line and all recent changes in streets. Laid out from accurate surveys & documents

New York: Benj. S.D. Demarest, 1877. Lithographic map, with original colour, in eight sections with linen joints, four sections linen-backed, two backed with marbled paper and two mounted onto the inner covers of a pair of half calf cloth-covered boards, the boards expertly rebacked and cornered, 33 3/8 x 47 3/8 inches, in modern cloth box. A very fine large-scale map of Brooklyn, depicting the city in the middle of the 19th century, with detailed information about the city's early settlers As the map itself makes clear: this is a reissue of a map that was originally published in 1846 by Richard Butt. It was transferred by George A. Buckingham Jr., in February 1877, and photo-lithographed by Robert A. Welcke. The addition of colour not only adds greatly to the attractiveness of the image, it also allows the boundaries of the early land holdings (most marked with the names of their original owners) to be clearly seen despite the presence of the grids of the modern streets. A fascinating historical record of Brooklyn's past. Phillips, Maps of America , p.176.

1877. Hi, This lot is an 1877 Original Paperback Wisden. It has tape to the spine but it is in Very Good Condition for the year. The tape holds the book together well and so is tightly bound. The covers are a bit dark with marks but you do not see 1877 covers too often. Inside however the book is nice and bright and clean, a very rare book. No restoration other than the tape applied to the spine. A hard year to find. 14th Edition.

Das Vorwort von Gerold Vogel ist datiert ?Zürich, October 1877? ? (C. Sieber-Lehmann, Lemma ?Burgunderkriege?, in: HLS).

Grape Vines. Grapes And Grape Vines Of California.

      - [San Francisco: Edward Bosqui, 1877] San Francisco: John Windle, 1980. Folio, [64] pp., 10 color plates with text. A fine copy in sheets and portfolio as issued. Limited to 40 copies for sale in sheets; this exact facsimile of the first California ampelography to show the grapes in superb color printing by the renowned printer Bosqui was reissued by San Francisco printers and binders from one of the few extant perfect copies (now at the Lilly Library). It is the rarest of American color plate books and this wonderfully accurate facsimile has an introduction by Kevin Starr. The edition was not completed and only 65 sets were released (of which 25 were bound). Zamorano Select (2010) 34A writes that "in his valuable introduction to the Windle facsimile" Kevin Starr provides historical background for the original edition. "Both as a work on viticulture and as a color-plate book, 'Grapes and Grape Vines of California' was an unprecedented achievement for a California press" as indeed was the facsimile which was so impressive that Harcourt Brace Jovanovich reissued it in a reduced format trade edition that went through two large printings before being remaindered.

EHON TAKA KAGAMI: THE ILLUSTRATED MIRROR OF HAWKS. PICTURES OF DIFFERENT KINDS O

[Tokyo 1877-79, Nakamura]. Stitched yellow wrappers, title. slips, very good, issued in two parts: part I: vols. 1-3;. part II: vols. 1-2, profusely illustrated by woodcuts, the. complete 5 vol. set, clean contents, new cloth Chitsu case.. THE MOST MAGNIFICIENT SINGLE RESOURCE ON JAPANESE FALCONRY JAPAN'S PREMIER SINGLE RESOURCE ON FALCONRY: A major resource on Japanese falconry, the capture, taming & teaching of falcons, the grooming, feeding and culture of the bird of prey. Wonderful illustrations of falcons, the associated tools & equipment, stands, methods of warming in winter before the hunt, winter hunting, respect for. On the flushing to expose game birds to be hunted by the falcon, the kill, capture of the quarry. How to tether, hoods, master's gloves and other accoutrements, field work, breeding, bathing &c. * EDITION: FIRST AND ONLY EDITION: This magnificent work was issued once in a single FIRST AND ONLY EDITION, and is complete in five volumes. The first series: 3 vols. were published in 1877, followed by the second series consisting of 2 volumes in 1879. Each volume has identifying title slips with: series 1: volumes jo, chu, ge in 3 parts]; series 2: the supplement jo, ge in 2 parts. * PRINTING TECHNIQUE: This marvelous work uses crushed mica as an integral part of the hand-made Washi paper. These tiny flecks of mica give a sparkle to the illustrations, and are especially effective on the feather portion of the falcons. Mica gives a realistic and "high-tech" touch to the wood-cut printing technique. Printed by hand. * Per Dr. Shigeru Oikawa, the eminent scholar on Kyosai, in a letter from him to us in 1998, he discusses the dates of the set. He states: "Takakagami was, I think, first published in 3 volumes with the title ...cover was blue or black. Then came the last 2 volumes ...this time the...color was yellow. The exact date is not known but the first edition in 3 volumes [first series in vols. 1,2,3,] could be 1860's and some examples of the full set in 5 volumes has the date of 1875. Kyosai had finished all of the drawings in 1860's but the publication seemed to be delayed..." In essence what he is saying that the first 3 volumes were published first, then later the balance of 2 volumes were published to make a full set of 5 volumes. We have never ever seen the first three in a separate group, in any color except yellow with dates of 1877, nor have we seen in our 45 years tenure any copies in blue/black. We have not found any reference books stating any information about any 1875 edition, we have only found the 1877-79 edition. One would assume that if such an earlier edition did exist bibliographers would have recorded this along with the current edition we now offer for sale. ***** * ABOUT THE ARTIST & AUTHOR KAWANABE KYOSAI: * Per N. Brown: BLOCK PRINTING AND BOOK ILLUSTRATION, p.196. Kawanabe Kyosai aka: Gyosai [1831-89] was a Kano painter, printmaker, illustrator, the son of a Samurai. Studied as a child under Utagawa Kuniyoshi, then in Tokyo under Maemura Towa, later under the most celebrated Kano Tohaku Chinshin who gave him the name Toiku at 19 years old. Loved drinking Sake, did some of his best work while under the influence, exhibited a the Vienna Intl. Exposition in 1873 & in Paris in 1883, where the West recognized his greatness. * Josiah Conder recognized his great talent & wrote a grand reference book on him: PAINTINGS AND STUDIES, Tokyo 1911. His famous KYOSAI GADEN, [L. Dawes p.92] was widely appreciated in Europe, it even had English captions for the foreign market! This was Kyosai's attempt to show the world a wide variety of ancient Japanese & Chinese painting styles; it is a magnificent set. Please inquire with us for to see if we have a copy for sale. * COLLATION & SPECIAL ILLUSTRATING TECHINIQUES: None of the above reference books list details of a full set which was issued complete in 5 volumes: 3 + 2 vols. supplement. The full list of the set titles appears in the back of vol. 5 where a catalogue of Kyosai's titles are listed by the publisher. This title was issued as a serial in 1877,the supplemental 2 volumes in 1879. * The collation of the set is: vol. 1,3,4,5, each have 10p.; vol. 2 has 11p. Every page is nicely illustrated, it contains some 111 illustrations in all. Most copies have mica-flecked paper that gives a sparkle and sheen to the bird's feathers. This technique is difficult to create and is exceptionally and RARE ! * THE VARIETY OF BIRDS USED: * The Siberian goshawk or [falcon] O-taka [in Japanese] has been considered the best variety for use in falconry in Japan since ancient times. The Chinese call these birds Lao Ying. * RARITY: Seldom found in the complete five volume state, in clean and collector's condition. This work is the most comprehensive single monograph devoted to Japanese falconry ever published in the 19th century or in prior periods. Gyosai's superb artistic skill and solid ability to capture the essence and feel of real and live Japanese falconry has yet to be surpassed in woodcut media. The application of mica dust is now a lost art, and never done. The work outlines the ancient methods and culture of the falcon. This work records the last of the ancient falconry methods of care, raising and training, again a lost art in Japan. Japanese E-hon [illustrated books] on this subject are SCARCE, and are seldom found if ever on the open market, or in auctions in a complete and excellent state. * This set is an historical monument, a corner-stone, the "Sui Generis" on the subject of falconry in Japan. A major treasure to any fancier of falconry or ornithology in Japan. The Siberian goshawk or [falcon] O-taka [in Japanese] has been considered the best variety for use in peregrine falconry in Japan. **** REFERENCES/BIBLIOGRAPHY: * N.         FUGAKU HYAKKEI: THE HUNDRED VIEWS OF MT FUJI

Tokyo 1877, Hayashi. Black stitched stiff wrs., 3 vol. set,. woodblock printed on hand-made paper, very good, vol.1 cover. edges bit worn, contents clean, clear impressions, tones of. grey, Sumi, black, indigo blue Chitsu case. RARE. HOKUSAI'S MOST CELEBRATED BOOK ON SACRED MT. FUJI Perhaps Hokusai's [1760-1849] most famous work in book form, illustrating a profusion of views of Mt. Fuji from all perspectives. This was also the prototype for his great color print series on Mt. Fuji. A delightful & impressive work, used as a standard for over a hundred years by artists, designers and collectors. This monograph is devoted to Japan's most sacred Mt. Fuji in all its glory, portrayed in various seasons and as seen by common folk as they go about their daily lives & occupations. * The volumes are 22.5 x 15.5 cm., with 25+25+25 double folded leaves or 150 pages in all, with illustrations of Mt. Fuji on 144 of the pages, 6 pages of Japanese text. The history of the various editions are complex, suffice to say that the work was originally issued in two volumes [it could be that the whole work was simply bound within two covers]. Then there were basically two main editions: the first being published in 1834-5, and reprints of this the first edition in pink covers called "FALCON FEATHERS," later ones in yellow covers. Another in 1875, in black stiff covers. The contents in all cases identical, the size varied by only a few centimeters, essentially all are identical. * The introduction consisting of the first two pages in volume one were actually written by Hokusai. * The work is marvelous, and shows how Mt. Fuji was portrayed in the life of the Japanese. How in the spring time people sat outdoors and viewed the cherry blossoms with Mt. Fuji in the background. The theme is how Mt. Fuji was always present in their daily lives as a background. The artistry and skill of Hokusai is without parallel, he illustrated using his keen ingenuity at drawing skills. He put the sacred mountain in the picture in a myriad of ways. The mystical quality of Mt. Fuji is illustrated and conveyed by his acute composition, insight and visionary-like avant-garde skills which were head and shoulders above most all other artists of his time. Hailed as perhaps Japan's greatest artist of the 19th century. All of his original woodcut books are rare and of great value. * REPRINT EDITION: The 1948 reprint edition was an exact woodblock-printed edition of the earlier edition and has all of the same pages and illustrations found in earlier editions, with a paper Chitsu or folding cover, nicely done, good registry, color, the exact same size as earlier editions. * AN ENGLISH TRANSLATION: If you are interested in the English translation of each page of this set, please inquire with us for this title. It is a superb work, giving valuable insight to the texts found in this stunning work. It bears the title: FUGAKU HIYAKU-KEI: ONE HUNDRED VIEWS OF FUJI BY HOKUSAI. See bibliography below. *** CONDITION NOTE: The 1877 edition has a small mend at the last page, the colophon in vol. 3, else very clean, nice. *** BIBLIOGRAPHY: * H.         MÈmoires d'un Gommeux. Par Saint-Patrice [pseud]

Paris: E. Dentu, 1877 - 8vo, contemporary black morocco with coat-of-arms gilt-stamped on the upper and lower boards, gilt lettering and inner dentelles, a.e.g. Frontis and three plates. ? James Harden-Hickey's own copy of his third novel, MÈmoires d'un Gommeux, with his quasi-bogus coat of arms and armorial insignias gilt-stamped on the binding. Harden-Hickey (1854-1898) was one of the most colorful and picaresque figures in 19th century Western literature. Born in San Francisco during the gold rush, he moved with his mother to Paris at an early age and during his formative years was effectively a Frenchman. He was flamboyant, adventurous and had serious delusions of grandeur, which he managed to in part fulfill by marrying wealthy women. He was made a baron of the Holy Roman Empire and years later when sailing the Atlantic, he noticed that the south Atlantic island of Trinidad had not been claimed by a country. He proceeded to claim it for himself. He took the title Prince James I of Trinidad and began selling Trinidad government bonds in New York City. The British seized Trinidad in 1895 and Harden-Hickey's dreams of his own country were over. He died in 1898 from an overdose of morphine in an El Paso, Texas hotel, a fitting end considering that one of the books he wrote was Euthanasia: the Aesthetics of Suicide (NY, 1894). In all Harden-Hickey wrote 12 books, several of them novels issued under the pseudonym Saint Patrice, and he edited the Paris newspaper Tribolet. ? Later bookplate of Jean-Marie Bernicat on the front paste-down and small oval ownership stamp of the same on the title-page.         Grape Vines. Grapes And Grape Vines Of California.

[San Francisco: Edward Bosqui, 1877] San Francisco: John Windle, 1980. Zamorano Select (2010) 34A writes that ?in his valuable introduction to the Windle facsimile? Kevin Starr provides historical background for the original edition. ?Both as a work on viticulture and as a color-plate book, ?Grapes and Grape Vines of California? was an unprecedented achievement for a California press? as indeed was the facsimile which was so impressive that Harcourt Brace Jovanovich reissued it in a reduced format trade edition that went through two large printings before being remaindered.

Panorama of San Francisco from California St. Hill

[San Francisco]: Morse's Gallery, 1877. Folding albumen photographic panorama mounted on eleven panels, (7½ x 87¼ inches overall), backed with cloth, caption title, photographic credit, and publisher's imprint printed on center panel. (Old staining to the panels below the photographic prints). Original gilt cloth binding (some old dampstaining to the lower edge of the covers), cloth chemise, half morocco and cloth slipcase, spine gilt. Perhaps the most famous early view of San Francisco. One of the landmarks of 19th-century American photography, and an iconic image of San Francisco. This remarkable panorama dramatically shows the growth of San Francisco nearly thirty years after the onset of the Gold Rush. In the 1870s, San Francisco audiences were hungry for panoramic displays, and the rest of the country was intrigued by San Francisco, the largest city in the West. Muybridge satisfied all appetites by providing a 360° degree view of the city, creating what Rebecca Solnit calls "an impossible sight, a vision of the city in all directions, a transformation of a circular space into a linear photograph." David Harris calls Muybridge's San Francisco panorama "one of the supreme conceptual and technical achievements in the history of architectural photography." Eadweard Muybridge took the photographs that make up this panorama from a vantage point on the central tower of the unfinished Nob Hill residence of railroad baron Mark Hopkins, then the highest point in the developed portion of the city. The work was done in June or July, 1877, and took some five hours to complete, based on the shifting shadows seen in the image. Muybridge began in the late morning with a view toward the southwest (the tenth plate in the panorama) and proceeded in a clockwise direction, moving his camera away from the sun from one image to the next. Muybridge's view is from some 380 feet above the sea level, and the view reaches some fifty miles into the distance and encompasses a width of fifteen miles. Despite the great scope of the work precise details of the city are visible throughout, and one can clearly see hanging laundry, ships in the harbor, shop signs, and a clock on a tower in the fifth panel reading quarter to two (other copies of the panorama show the clock reading nearly five-thirty). San Francisco spreads throughout the panorama and the dynamism of the city is clearly evident, as many unfinished buildings and roads under construction are also seen. Muybridge's panorama was advertised as being for sale in July 1877, offered for eight dollars rolled or ten dollars accordion-folded and bound, as in the present copy. Buyers could buy the panorama directly from Muybridge, or through Morse's Gallery. Eadweard Muybridge (1830-1904) was one of the great photographic innovators of the nineteenth century. Born in England, he came to San Francisco in 1855 and built his reputation on photographs of San Francisco, Yosemite, and other western locales. The year after he produced his San Francisco panorama, Muybridge, at the behest of another railroad magnate, Leland Stanford, produced a sequence of photographs of a galloping horse that proved that all four of the animals hooves were off the ground at the same time. Muybridge's work in sequential photography, in which he photographed animals and humans in motion, laid the groundwork for motion pictures. A remarkable view of San Francisco, and a high point in the photographic representation of the West. David Harris, Eadweard Muybridge and the Photographic Panorama of San Francisco , 1850-1880, catalogue item 31, and pp.37-53; Rebecca Solnit, River of Shadows: Eadweard Muybridge and the Technological Wild West; Paul A. Falconer, "Muybridge's Window to the Past: A Wet-Plate View of San Francisco," in California History (Summer 1978), pp.130-157.

Caroline Scott Harrison died of tuberculosis in The White House on October 25, 1892.In 1872, 42-year-old lawyer Benjamin Harrison unsuccessfully campaigned for the Republican nomination for Governor of Indiana. He continued to make speeches on behalf of Republican candidates and policies. In 1876, the original Republican nominee for Governor dropped out of the race and Harrison accepted the Republicans' invitation to take his place on the ticket. He lost. When U.S. Senator Oliver H.P.T. Morton died in November 1877, the Republicans nominated Harrison to run for the seat, but he lost because the party failed to gain a majority in the state legislature, which at that time elected U.S. Senators. In 1880, Benjamin Harrison was elected to one term in the Senate, serving from 1881-1887."

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

        VOCABULARY OF THE SHOSHONE LANGUAGE

Salt Lake City, 1877. Original green printed wrappers. Very minor wear and soiling. Near fine. First edition, issued by the author. As early as 1855, Alexander Ross in his FUR HUNTERS OF THE FAR WEST had included a two-page "Snake Language" word list, but Hill's work is the most comprehensive vocabulary of English-Shoshone to have been published. Not in Streeter, Pilling, or Graff, and a rarity of western Indian linguistics.

CANADA - GOVERNOR-GENERAL: Autograph Letter Signed "Dufferin" to an Eton Teacher of his Son, "Lord Clandeboye," Discussing the Boy's "Arithmetical Failures" and Confessing that "to this day I have been unable to master the multiplication table, but I am particularly fond of mathematics."].

1877 - 1 October 1877. Small Octavo bifolium (ca. 20x12,5 cm). 4 pp. Black ink on watermarked laid paper with a printed letterhead of the "Government House, Ottawa." Left upper corner of both leaves of the bifolium cut out, only slightly affecting the upper lines, but the text is completely understandable. Mild fold marks, but overall a very good letter. Interesting letter written by Lord Dufferin while on service as the Third Governor-General of Canada, revealing some curious details of his personality. Addressing an Eton teacher of his son (either his eldest son Archibald Leofric Temple (1863-1900), or his second son Terence (1866-1918)), Dufferin writes: "I think he is very young of his age, which is some excuse for his thoughtlessness, and I trust in time his mind may sufficiently ripen to master at least the elements of mathematics. I am afraid I must consider myself responsible for his arithmetic failures, for to this day - only I should not wish the fact to be published in .[?] - I have been unable to master the multiplication table, but I am particularly fond of mathematics, and indeed the only prize I ever obtained at Eton was a mathematical one, so I trust that Clandeboye's difficulty over his figures need not necessarily imply any weakness in the logical faculty. I have always consoled myself with the reflection that Newton himself could never do a compound addiction sum correctly." "Lord Dufferin brought an immense passion for Canadian unity to his duties and was equally at home in English and French. During his tenure, Prince Edward Island joined on federation (1873), and the Royal Military College and the Supreme Court were established. Lord and Lady Dufferin were the first to use La Citadelle in the city of Québec as a second vice-regal residence. Residents of that city long had a particular regard for Lord Dufferin after he persuaded municipal officials not to tear down the walls of the Old City to accommodate the provincial capital's expansion. Lord Dufferin established the Governor General's Academic Medals to reward excellence by Canadian students in high schools, colleges and universities, and they are still awarded today. After serving in Canada, Lord Dufferin was appointed Viceroy of India (1884 to 1888), took up several high-profile ambassadorial posts, and died in Ireland in 1902" (Heraldic Symbols in the Senate Speaker's Chambers/ Parliament of Canada online). He also went on a journey to the North Atlantic in 1856 on the schooner Foam, visiting Iceland, northern Norway and Spitsbergen. His travel account "Letters from High Latitudes" (London, 1857) "was extremely successful and can be regarded as the prototype of the comic travelogue" (Wikipedia).
