The London Fish Market at Billingsgate Erected by the Corporation of the City of London

C.F. Kell, 8 Castle Street, Holborn, [c.1877]., London, - Billingsgate Chromolithograph printed on card and laid on card title sheet, lettered in lithograph. A view of Billingsgate Fish Market, in its original location in Billingsgate Wharf, in Lower Thames Street. The market had existed informally since the sixteenth century, but an official building was put in place in 1850. The market quickly outgrew it, and a new building was designed by Sir Horace Jones, who also designed Tower Bridge. The market was built to incorporate a riverside landing, so that fishermen could unload their produce directly into the building. As the caption underneath commemorates, work began in 1874 and was completed in 1877, the presumable date of the print.Billingsgate was the biggest fish market in the world when the print was made, and was already notorious for the foul language used by the stallholders and porters.         Spy cartoon & autograph of W. G. Grace, "Cricket" [with] autograph. "no cricketer, living or dead, has ever approached him"

Vanity Fair, London 1877 - Spy cartoon of the eminent Victorian cricketer, with a cut signature of Grace. Impressive full length portrait of Grace, putting on his right hand glove, his bat tucked under one arm, wearing a colorful hooped cap and sash. His beard carefully trimmed and a quizzical expression on his face. William Gilbert Grace (1848 - 1915), was an British amateur cricketer considered to be one of the greatest players of the game and known by all as W. G. (also the Doctor, the Champion, the Big 'Un, and the Old Man). The Guardian said of Grace: "Dr. William Gilbert Grace was by common consent the greatest and most attractive figure that ever appeared on the cricket field. In his all-round mastery of the game, in the length of years during which he stood far above all rivals, in the amazing sum total of his cricketing achievements, and by no means least of all in the popular interest he excited, no cricketer, living or dead, has ever approached him, and it is doubtful if any ever will. For many years he held the record for the highest individual score. The most remarkable year of Dr. Grace's career was 1895, when he was 47 years of age. In that season he scored a thousand runs before the end of May, completed his hundredth century and finally scored 2,346 runs. (The Guardian, obituary Monday 25 October 1915).Printed for "Vanity Fair" magazine supplement, color chromolithograph, 10 1/2 x 16" [with] nicely signed autograph "W. G. Grace" in black ink and underlined, approximately 4 1/2 x 1 1/2". The caricature with a shallow quarter inch crescent chip at right edge and faint damp stain which is completely obscured by archival mounting. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

        Architecture in Ancient Rome - Alma-Tadema, 1877.

Prijs: ?750,- (incl. lijst).

Set of six original pencil drawings of the crab Daphnella Brachyura

1877. WEISMANN, August. Set of detailed anatomical drawings of the crab, Daphnella Brachyura. [Lake Bodensee, Austria], 1877. Six original pencil drawings on stiff paper, the largest measuring 12 by 8-1/2 inches, the smallest 6-1/2 by 4-3/4 inches. $1800.Six intricate pencil drawings of the crab Daphnella Brachyura used to produce the five plates in Gruber and WeismannÂ’s 1877 monograph, Ueber einige neue oder unvollkommen gekannte Daphniden.Neo-Darwinian and one of the founders of the science of genetics, August Weismann, is perhaps best known for his theory of “germ plasm,” forerunner of DNA theory, in opposition to the prevailing doctrine of the inheritance of acquired traits. Germ plasm, he contended, is not affected by anything the body learns during its life, and therefore has no information to pass on to the next generation. This came to be called the “Weismann barrier.” In his capacity as professor of zoology at the University of Freiburg, Weismann published numerous memoirs on insect embryology, small crustaceans and hydrozoa (DSB). This series of intricate anatomical pencil drawings of the crab specimen, Daphnella Brachyura, taken from Lake Bodensee (Constance) in Austria, is finished and keyed, ready for the engraver. They were used to produce the five folding plates that illustrate Gruber and WeismannÂ’s Ueber einige neue oder unvollkommen gekannte Daphniden (1877). According to the authors, Daphnella belongs to the group Brachyura, which included the majority of Crustacea, although more recent discoveries suggest that this specimen resembles the classification Anomura, characterized by a stunted fifth pair of legs. “The fifth pair of legs is generally weak, not fit either for walking, swimming, or grasping food or preyÂ… I am not aware that any function has ever been assigned to the fifth pair of legs in this section of the Anomura, though in another family, the Lithodidae [stone crabs], where the fifth pair of legs are slender, chelate, and folded in the branchial chambers, they may be used to keep the branchial clear of parasites and thus be of advantage to the animal” (T.R.R. Stebbing). Two drawings contain manuscript notations in German. Two drawings contain manuscript notations in German. Extremely good condition.

Small octavo, modern three-quarter crimson morocco gilt, raised bands, marbled boards and endpapers. $2500.First edition of this scarce survey of Balochistan (today the largest of PakistanÂ’s five provinces), this copy made unique with the tipped-in insertion of two pages of autograph notes handwritten by the author on the geology of eastern Balochistan. Illustrated with seven mounted Woodbury-type photographic plates and a large folding lithographed map, hand-colored in outline, handsomely bound.HughesÂ’ valuable work covers the history, geography and ethnography of the region, based on a wide range of official and largely unpublished sources. Blanford, a member of the Geological Survey of India, during 1876-77. Blanford, who joined the Survey in 1855, was a deputy Superintendent, and worked in a number of locations in India, including Orissa, the Rajmahal Hills, Raneegunge and Malwa and the Central Provinces. With a manuscript title-page with a mounted cut out of an albumen print of the arms of Friesland, and 34 albumen prints mounted on 26 leaves with manuscript captions below, and 3 albumen prints mounted on 3 loosely inserted leaves, without captions, but matching the others and including 1 repeat. Contemporary blind-tooled brown cloth, with metal clasps, gilt title on front board, gilt edges.

      - NCC (2 copies); cf. C. Boschma, "De historische tentoonstelling van Friesland in 1877" in: De vrije Fries LVII (1977), pp. 17-32; for Matthijsen and Ringler see: photographen.nl. Album containing 37 photographs (including 1 repeat) of the Historical exhibition of Friesland held in the royal palace of Leeuwarden in the summer of 1877, giving a valuable display of the exhibition and its historical artefacts. The well-received photos were made by the, Leeuwarden-based, female photographer Gerarda Henrietta Matthijssen (1846-1879) by request of Antiquarian Cabinet of Friesland, upon which she was allowed to call herself royal photographer. The photos were apparently also sold together in a limited issue album as we could locate two other copies: one in the library of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam and one in the collection of Tresoar, Leeuwarden. One of the three loosely inserted leaves with photographs, contains a manuscript owner's inscription of another Leeuwarden-based photographer, Hendrik Anthonie Karel Ringler (1846-1879).Some minor thumbing on the title-page and some occasional foxing throughout, not affecting the photographs, otherwise in very good condition. Binding slightly rubbed along the extremities, otherwise good.

John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1877 - 1877 Original Wisden Rebound with Covers

1877. This 1877 Wisden was rebound a little time ago in brown boards with a green leather spine and corners. The original wrappers have been preserved and are in excellent, unrestored, clean condition. There are are one or two small marks to the front and rear boards. The spine has the title and year in gilt and an old owner's initials at the base of the spine. Internally, the book is in fabulous condition. The wrappers are complete, unrestored with just the odd tiny mark. The remaining contents are complete, original, unmarked and in fine condition. I suspect that the book was rebound quite some time ago and as a result the original contents and wrappers have been brilliantly preserved. A really nice example.

        Autograph letter signed ("Napoléon").

Apparently Camden Place, Chislehurst, Kent, [1. V. 1877]. - 8vo. 1 page on bifolium. In French, to "mon cher Général" whom he invites to England to speak with him about the turn that events will take. A meeting is about to be held in Camden where the general will meet among others Raoul Duval (French politician, 1807-1893). On the eve of this meeting Napoléon IV would like to take the advice of the most influential and powerful men. Napoléon IV does not want to give an official character to this little reunion in order not to harm certain people but still he asks the general to show this letter which could be taken for a convocation rather than an invitation. Napoléon IV ends his letter by sending his regards to the general's wife and sons as well as to the general himself, asking him to arrive in England on the 5th or 6th May. - On headed paper "Camden Place, Chislehurst".

Panorama of San Francisco from California St. Hill

San Francisco: Morse's Gallery, 1877. First edition. original burgundy cloth lettered in gilt. Expertly rebacked and refurbished, preserving original cloth, interior with minimal brown spots and foxing. Quarto (covers). 11 albumen prints, approx. 88 inches altogether when opened, each photo approximately 8 by 7.5 inches, mounted on linen and accordion folded This iconic panorama, 360 degrees, of San Francisco was created by Muybridge the summer of 1877 and consists of eleven photographs. The panorama was photographed from the tower of the unfinished residence of Mark Hopkins, the railroad king, at California Street hill, now known as Nob Hill.         Architecture in Ancient Rome - Alma-Tadema, 1877.

Prijs: ?750,- (incl. lijst).

Huge volume containing an important collection of articles and papers on fish and especially eels, by the Danish biologist Ernst Johannes Schmidt (1877-1933), probably all his papers published in this period. Schmidt is best known for his findings on the migration patterns and breeding places of the eel, which he researched during various Danish expeditions in the North Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. He also, accidently, caught the first leptocephalus larva outside the Mediterranean Sea, which are also discussed in many of the papers. The book opens with a general title-page Havunders

        Autograph postcard initialed

1877. Signed. WHITMAN, Walt. Autograph postcard, initialed by Whitman. Camden, October 2, 1877. Original postcard measures 5 by 3 inches); handsomely window framed with portrait, entire piece measures 18 by 12-1/2 inches. $4500.Original autograph postcard to fellow poet Edward Carpenter: “Camden, New Jersey, US America. Oct 2 [1877]— I merely write to say at once that your letter & the postal or[der] have both been safely rec’d.— The books (to the address given) will be sent immediately.— I am well for me— H[erbert] G[ilchrist] is at John B[urroughs]’s on the Hudson— Mrs. G[ilchrist] is ill in bed— Harry [Stafford] is well— Will write more fully soon. Thanks & love, WW.” Framed together with a portrait of Whitman. On October 2, 1877, Whitman wrote this postcard to his friend British poet Edward Carpenter, whose best-known poem ""Towards Democracy"" clearly shows Whitman's influence, informing him of a shipment of books, probably copies of the second printing of Two Rivulets. Two Rivulets had first appeared a year earlier, ""partly as my contribution to our National Centennial,"" and was reissued in September of 1876. Whitman's reference to Herbert Gilchrist's visit with John Burroughs took place at ""Slabsides,"" Burroughs' ""hermit's retreat"" on the banks of the Hudson. Herbert's mother, Anne Gilchrist was one of Whitman's greatest admirers. Her appreciative article on Leaves of Grass was praised by William Rossetti as ""the fullest, farthest, and most eloquent,"" and Whitman thought there was ""no eulogium so magnificent."" In December of 1877 she wrote a friend that she was still recovering from ""a somewhat severe operation (under ether) to cure an injury received at the birth of one of my children"" (Kaplan, 366). Harry Stafford was Whitman's ""young man,"" whom he had met ""at the Camden print shop, where Whitman saw Two Rivulets through the press"" (Kaplan,359). Postcard lightly embrowned, expert repair to vertical tear. Very desirable Whitman item with revealing content.

Erste Ausgabe. Bildthemen sind u. a. „Die Lerche" mit dem Selbstbildnis Vogelers, „Frühlingsmorgen", „Um Mittag", „Frühlingsblumen", „Froschbraut", „Der Fischer", „Storch überm Weiher", „Die Amsel" und „Märznacht" sowie das melancholische Blatt „Vor Feierabend".
