CHEROKEE HYMN BOOK. COMPILED FROM SEVERAL AUTHORS, AND REVISED

      Philadelphia: American Baptist Publication Society, 1877.. Philadelphia: American Baptist Publication Society, 1877.. 96pp. 16mo. Original printed wrappers. Wrappers lightly chipped, contemporary inscription in pink ink on front cover. Internally clean. Very good. A later edition of the Cherokee hymnal, with the titlepage in both English and Cherokee, and a chart of the Cherokee alphabet on the rear cover. An interesting copy, boldly inscribed in pink ink across the front wrapper: "Compliments of Wm. Rasmus Asst. Secy. Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory, Tah- la-quah. En. March 8th, 1880." William Rasmus (1838- 1910) was a Cherokee by adoption and a resident of Tahlequah. He had married a part-Cherokee woman and become a licensed trader and subsequently lawyer in Indian Territory, involved in tribal affairs on a national level. That a high-ranking Cherokee official with a foot in both the Native and the white worlds would use this little volume as a gift evokes a certain amount of necessary daily cultural diplomacy. The hymns are without music, as is usual. PILLING, IROQUOIAN p.173.

        Hunting Register [Cover title]. 18 Seasonal Diaries,1877-1898, recording Hunt Meets with the Beaufort Hunt and others

      [Elmestree, Tetbury, Gloucs., 5 october 1877 to 23 march 1898]. [Elmestree, Tetbury, Gloucs., 5 october 1877 to 23 march 1898]. (BEAUFORT HUNT) 18 volumes bound in two vols., Oblong folio. Dated manuscript entries in ink in copies of Spiers and Son's Hunting Register, with holograph lists of Horses in Stable, various directions to binder, occasional inserted ephemera. Contemporary half navy blue morocco, cloth sides, spines titled in gilt. Some minor rubbing, superficial traces of damp staining to cloth, else fine and internally clean . Significant group of sporting diaries recording the participation of Lt.-Col. Francis Henry (d. 1931) at the meets of the Beaufort Hunt during a twenty year period. Henry A.W.F. Somerset (1847-1924), ninth duke of Beaufort, was one of the great sportsmen of the nineteenth century, and the Badminton pack hunted a wide country with legendary energy. Hunstman Will Dale recalled that one season the pack hunted 186 days "and I was the only one of the firm who went the whole lot". It was under the ninth duke that the Badminton Sporting Library series was produced (1885-1902). Frank Henry hunted with the Beaufort from 1866-7, served as Honorary Secretary for the hunt for more than two decades, and compiled the 'Members of the Beaufort Hunt Pats and Present' (privately printed, May 1914, see below), which includes a substantial historical Appendix. His diaries record hunts with the Beaufort (the Dukes as he called it), as well as the Quorn, Lord Suffolk's Harriers, Vale of the White Horse, the Cottesmore, and others. His residence at Elmestree, Tetbury, Gloucestershire, is still at the center of hunt country and adjoins Highgrove, the country residence of the Prince of Wales. Entries (October to April of each season) include date, pack, fixture (place of the meet), hack ridden to meet, hunter ridden, coverts drawn; foxes found, killed, or run to ground; weather; and usually a few lines of narrative summary of the day's events. At his most active, Henry was hunting four and five days a week. With an 1890 autograph letter, signed ("Beaufort"), from the ninth Duke, on mourning stationery; and several newspaper clippings. With a copy of: [HENRY, Frank, compiler]. Members of the Beaufort Hunt Pats and Present. Printed in blue on buff paper. 80pp. Cirencester: Standard Printing Works [for Private Circulation], 1914. The historical Appendix, compiled by Henry, gives highlights, including Henry's accounts of his best days with the Badminton pack, and the presentation to Henry of a portrait by John Bacon, R.A. in 1912. Henry noted that "Farmers and foxhunting go hand in hand" and that during his tenure as secretary subscriptions rose from 91 to 291 members. A sporting manuscript of outstanding interest

        L'Histoire de France

      ONT>Racontee a Mes Petits-Enfants, 1877. ONT>Racontee a Mes Petits-Enfants, 1877 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A scarce edition of this history of France, written by Francois Pierre Guillaume Guizot. In French. Illustrated throughout with317 plates (counted, no collation available), including many coloured maps, and many engravings in the text. Franois Pierre Guillaume Guizot (17871874) was a French historian, orator, and statesman. Guizot was a dominant figure in French politics prior to the Revolution of 1848, a conservative liberal who opposed the attempt by King Charles X to usurp legislative power, and worked to sustain a constitutional monarchy following the July Revolution of 1830. He then served the citizen king Louis Philippe, as Minister of Education, 183237, ambassador to London, Foreign Minister 18401847, and finally Prime Minister of France from 19 September 1847 to 23 February 1848. Guizot's influence was critical in expanding public education, which under his ministry saw the creation of primary schools in every French commune. But as a leader of the Doctrinaires, committed to supporting the policies of Louis Phillipe and limitations on further expansion of the political franchise, he earned the hatred of more left-leaning liberals and republicans through his unswerving support for restricting suffrage to propertied men, advising those who wanted the vote to enrich yourselves (enrichissez-vous) through hard work and thrift. As Prime Minister, it was Guizot's ban on the political meetings (called the Paris Banquets, which celebrated the birthday of George Washington) of an increasingly vigorous opposition in January 1848 that catalyzed the revolution that toppled Louis Philippe in February and saw the establishment of the French Second Republic. Complete in seven volumes. Bookplates of Alan Carr to front pastedowns. Condition: In half-morocco bindings with marbled boards. Externally rubbed, with wear to the heads of two spines. All hinges strained. Internally, generally firmly bound althogh strained in places. Ink signature to recto of front free-endpaper. Pages are bright, though with some scatteredfoxing throughout. Condition: In original half morocco binding with marbled boards. Externally, a trifle rubbed with joints starting but firm. Hinges tender. The Ingoldsby Legends or Mirth and Marvels

      London - Richard Bentley and Son, 1877. London - Richard Bentley and Son, 1877 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. The myths, legends, ghost stories and poetry of Thomas Ingoldsby, the pen-name of English clergyman Richard Harris Barham. With an illustrated frontispiece and numerous furtherillustrations in the textby George Cruikshank, John Leech and John Tenniel. The legends were first printed during 1837 as a regular series in the magazine Bentley's Miscellany and later in New Monthly Magazine. The legends were illustrated by John Leech and George Cruikshank. They proved immensely popular and were compiled into books published in 1840, 1842 and 1847 by Richard Bentley. They remained popular during the 19th century but have since become little known. An omnibus edition was published in 1879: The Ingoldsby Legends; or Mirth and marvels. As a priest of the Chapel Royal, Barham was not troubled with strenuous duties and he had ample time to read and compose stories. Although based on real legends and mythology, such as the hand of glory, they are mostly deliberately humorous parodies or pastiches of medieval folklore and poetry. The collection contains one of the earliest transcriptions of the song A Franklyn's Dogge, an early version of the modern children's song Bingo. Other than this, the best-known poem of the collection is the Jackdaw of Rheims about a jackdaw who steals a cardinal's ring and is made a saint. Condition: In a decorative full morocco binding. Externally smart with just some rubbing to the cover. Internally, firmly bound. Bright and clean with just the odd spot, more to the endpapers. Overall: VERY GOOD.

        A History of Greece, from its Conquest by the Romans to the Present Time. B.C. 146 to A.D. 1864

      Oxford: At the Clarendon Press, 1877. Oxford: At the Clarendon Press,, 1877. Revised by Rev. H.F. Tozer 7 volumes octavo. Original pinkish-red cloth. Title gilt to the spines, Greek key roll across the top of the upper board and spine in black, and the lower board in blind. Portrait frontispiece to volume I. A little rubbed, spines slightly sunned, small snag repaired on upper board of volume I, volume III a touch bubbled on the upper board, free endpapers browned, foxing to the frontispiece and title page of volume I, some hinges just started, overall a very good set. Publication originally began in 1844, this is "a new edition, revised throughout, and in part re-written, with considerable additions by the author". A history of the Greeks by a prominent British philhellene. While at university in Göttingen Finlay came into contact with enthusiasts for the movement to liberate Greece from Ottoman rule, he "'resolved to visit Greece and judge for myself concerning the condition of the people and the chances of the war.' In November 1823 he met Byron at Cephalonia. 'You are young and enthusiastic,' said Byron, 'and therefore sure to be disappointed when you know the Greeks as well as I do'" (DNB). Finlay settled in Greece and retained "a special interest in the development of the kingdom and his writings reveal activity at a high level. He was at King Otho's hunting and dinner parties … but as a liberal was never really in favour at court … In July 1834 he was appointed 'commissionaire extraordinaire' to the nomarch of Athens in matters concerning the development of the new capital but in November resigned in despair at perpetual frustrations. Nevertheless, in his own way he continued to promote both cultural and material progress. The university, the library, and the archaeological society were indebted to him for untiring canvassing for support, outside as well as within Greece". The publication of this great series of histories commenced in 1844, and was completed in 1861, when he wrote "the autobiographical fragment which is almost the sole authority for his life". The final two volumes, covering the period of Finlay's presence in Greece, are a particularly valuable contemporary source "not yet fully exploited", and the "frequently ignored medieval volumes should not be swept aside as entirely outmoded, as they anticipate certain modern revisions and emphasize the importance of social and economic conditions as distinct from central politics". An attractive set of this important history. Book-labels of A.J. Cornwell, historian of the Oratory School to the front pastedowns.

        Trois Contes

      Paris: G. Charpentier, 1877. Paris: G. Charpentier, 1877 First edition, first printing. Finely bound in ½ brown Morocco, over brown marbled boards, five raised bands, gilt lettering and decorations to the spine, top edge gilt, magenta marbled endpapers. A near fine copy, with the publisher's yellow paper wrappers bound in, a minor hint of wear to the spine ends and corners, light spotting throughout, else fine. Very scarce. Trois Contes is a collection of three stories: "Un cœur simple," "La légende de Saint-Julien l'hospitalier," and "Hérodias." Flaubert had been working on his incomplete novel Bouvard and Pécuchet (published posthumously) for over a decade when he decided to take break to write these short stories. Although each has a different and unrelated plot, Flaubert envisioned these three stories as a single unit, leading to their publication in a single volume. Each story has a religious motif, ranging from characters undergoing spiritual enlightenment and traveling with disguised angels to an adaptation of the Biblical tale of the beheading of John the Baptist. The title Trois Contes emphasizes the religious undertones by making this volume a trilogy rather than a collection of stories, alluding to the Biblical Holy Trinity.. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. NOVUM TESTAMENTUM GRAECE: AD ANTIQUISSIMOS TESTES DENUO RECENSUIT (Editio Critica Minor Ex VIII, Maiore Desumpta)

      J.C. Hinrichs, Lipsiae (Leipzig), Germany 1877 - Three-quarter rebinding in dark brown morocco on banker-green antique cloth with laid finish. Spine ruled on gilt. in custom-fashioned slipcase. Light age-tanning to pages. Two pages of previous owner's neat annotations to pp. 898-899. 1056 pp. What can be said but that Constantin von Tischendorf was an assiduous and tireless scholar who spent nearly his entire adult professional life seeking out the most authoritative recensions of The New Testament. His lifelong search took him to remote monasteries throughout Europe, Egypt, Sinai and The Levant. His discovery of certain ancient manuscripts predating any known to that day, led to the most authentic critical recension, as well as his extremely rigorous critical standards for assessing the authenticity of any future recensions of the New Testament, are still drawn upon to this day, nearly 150 years after first publication. A Dictionary of Chemistry and the Allied Branches of Other Sciences

      Longmans, Green, and Co. 1877-1882, London - 9 vols.: vi, 1137; 985, 2, 15; 1096, 15; 804; vi, 1118, 15; xiii, 1136, 15; 1215, 15; 838; 842 to 2174, 15 p. 24 cm. 885 b&w figures and hundreds of tables, graphs and charts, five of which pull out. Blue cloth hardcovers with blank and gold impressing. Sunned spines. Spine ends softened and vol. IV has some tearing at top. A few bumped corners. Hinges cracking internally. Text block edges a little soiled. Interior clean and bright. The first edition of this mammoth chemical encyclopedia appeared from 1863 to 1868 but a new edition became necessary within just a few years due to the considerable changes occurring constantly in scientific knowledge. The 19th century was an age of revolution in the manner of viewing and describing chemical reactions. Particular attention in these volumes is given to analytical processes, both qualitative and quantitative. Though editor Henry Watts (1815-1884) was a well-known scientist in his own right, the list of contributors to the volumes reads like a who's who of 19th century chemists. William Dittmar (1859 - 1951) was a German who made his career in Britain; he was responsible for discovering the average salinity of seawater in 1884 while analyzing 77 samples from around the world. Another German, August Wilhelm von Hofmann (1818 – 1892), invented the Hofmann voltameter for electrolyzing water. Sir Michael Foster (1836 - 1907) was a physiologist who taught at Cambridge. Frederick Guthrie (1833 - 1886) was a British scientific writer and professor who helped found the Physical Society of London (now the Institute of Physics) in 1874; he was well known for his view that science should be based on experimentation, not discussion. William Odling (1829 - 1921) was an Englishman who contributed to the development of the periodic table. Sir Henry Enfield Roscoe (1833 - 1915) was particularly noted for early work on photochemical studies. Two of these scientists wouldn't have got along. Sir Edward Frankland (1825 – 1899) was considered one of the foremost chemists of his day. An expert in water quality and analysis, he originated the concept of combining power, or valence, in chemistry. James Alfred Wanklyn (1834 – 1906), however, is remembered today for his "ammonia method" of determining water quality and for his fierce arguments with those, such as Edward Frankland, who opposed him over matters related to water analysis. Paris: Hebert et Cie, Successeurs a Ve Adre Houssiaux, 1877. Paris: Hebert et Cie, Successeurs a Ve Adre Houssiaux, 1877 This is the complete 20-volume set of Honoré De Balzac's works, originally published by Alexandre Houssiaux and later by his widow, who had the rights to Balzac's works from 1846. Each volume also has gilt titles to a 4-banded 5-compartment spine. Covers are edgeworn with rubbing to leather and bumped corners. Also the lower fore-edge of each board has lost some of its marbling, due to water damage, which has also discoloured varying amounts of the lower quarter of most pages of most volumes.
The volumes are as follows:
Scènes de la Vie Privée - (Vol 1-4) -
Scènes de la Vie de Province (5-8);
Scènes de la Vie Parisienne (9-12);
Scènes de la Vie Militaire et Scènes de la Vie de Campagne (13);
Etudes Philosophiques (14-16);
Scènes de la Vie Parisienne: Les Parents Pauvres; La Cousine Bette -- Le Cousin Pons (17);
Scènes de la Vie Parisienne: Scènes de la Vie Politique; Scènes de la Vie Campagne: Etudes Analytiques; Splendeurs et Misères des Courtisanes; Dernière Incarnation de Vautris; L'Envers de L'Histoire Contemporaine; Les Paysans -- Petites Misères de La Vie Conjugale (18);
Theatre: Vautrin, Les Ressources de Quinola, Pamela Giraud, La Maratre, Le Faiseur (19);
Les Contes Drolatiques: Colligez ez Abbayes de Tourayne (20). MR. NIGHTINGALE'S DIARY

      , 1877. 1877. A Farce in One Act. Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1877. Original terra-cotta cloth decorated in black. First "Collectible" Edition of this play first performed in 1851. We say first "collectible" because there are only four known copies of the original 1851 pamphlet; supposedly a fifth, from which Osgood printed this edition, was destroyed in the Boston fire of 1879. This is a volume in the publisher's "Vest Pocket Series," so named for its diminutive size (a second Dickens "comic burletta" was published in this series the same year -- IS SHE HIS WIFE?).~This copy is terra-cotta in color; others are green, without priority. It is a bright, near-fine copy (minor rubbing at the tips, one small mark on the fore-edge of the leaves) -- quite uncommon in this condition. Eckel pp 64-5.

        NOVUM TESTAMENTUM GRAECE: AD ANTIQUISSIMOS TESTES DENUO RECENSUIT (Editio Critica Minor Ex VIII, Maiore Desumpta)

      Lipsiae (Leipzig), Germany: J.C. Hinrichs, 1877. Hardcover. Near Fine. Three-quarter rebinding in dark brown morocco on banker-green antique cloth with laid finish.
