1876 1877 1878 Paperback Wisdens with Facsimile Covers. VG

Hi, I recently purchases a rebind in fabulous condition, inside the binding were 1876 through to 1878 but it was in such good condition I decided to split them out and had facsimile covers added to them hence, and to keep them together ... This lot is a set of three Original Wisdens 1876 , 1877 1878 , Paperbacks with facsimile spines and covers in very good condition. The books are in very good condition, the pages are very clean and pretty much unmarked. There is a touch of foxing to the 1877 but it is only slight and to the odd page, the other two have minimal foxing. Although it used to be rebound there is not much trimming with nice margins. A fabulous set of 3 early Wisdens at a great price. Please see the large pictures. More available on request. Buy-it-now. More Photos on request. Payment: Card, Paypal, Cheque or BACS

The Movements and Habits of Climbing Plants

John Murray, London 1876 - Second Thousand. 8vo; viii,208,32(publisher's catalogue)pp, with 13 text woodcuts. Original publisher's royal green pebbled cloth, covers paneled in blind (arches-style), spine lettered and decorated in gilt, chocolate-brown end papers, period owner's stamp top of half title. Originally published in the ninth volume of the Journal of the Linnean Society, in 1865. Our copy is the first hardcover edition (second edition overall), second thousand. Only 500 copies were printed, making this, Freeman believes, "probably the smallest issue of any [John] Murray Darwin" title. Darwin described the origins and writing of this book in his autobiography, where he noted: "Some of the adaptations displayed by climbing plants are as beautiful as those by Orchids for ensuring cross-fertilisation." Boards to Vol. I clean and complete, with a few very small scuffs near edges and corners, and some rubbing in similar places and at outer hinges. Spine a bit dulled with more rubbing to raised bands though gilt tooling is still visible. Other two volumes' boards in much the same condition, with the titling plate to the spine of Vol. II slightly separating at one corner, and a faint white marking near the front outer hinge of Vol. III. All else in order. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Mark Twain's Copy. The Ancient Regime; Source Book for 2 of Twain's Major Novels

New York: Henry Holt and Co, 1876. First American Edition. Hard Cover. Mark Twain's copy of Taine's book, signed by him and with his annotations on the last page of text, stating that he had read it twice: "Finished Jan. 29th" and beneath that note, "Finished Sept. 10th." Twain scholar Sherwood Cummings wrote of this book, "[Twain] not only referred to it during the next decade in his notebooks and correspondence, but borrowed liberally from it for material and incidents in both The Prince and the Pauper and A Connecticutt Yankee." Moreover, Twain scholar Stephen Railton (Professor at the University of VA) writes in his endnotes to "A Connecticutt Yankee in King Arthur's Court" [NY, Barnes & Noble Classics, 2005] (Endnote 13): "As Hank implies here and more explicitly on page 256, 'le droit du seigneur' (the privilege of the lord) was to have sex with an untitled woman on her wedding night before her husband. The list of aristocratic abuses here is derived from material Twain originally found in Hippolyte Adolphe Taine's 'The Ancient Regime' .....which was also a source for several other passages in the novel." Signed "Samuel L. Clemens / Hartford 1876" on front end paper, and with Twain's estate bookplate on front pastedown, signed by his executor, Albert Bigelow Paine. Please call for complete description of incidents and material in this book, which appear in Twain's novels. Light dampstain to the final few leaves; wear at spine ends, inner hinges stressed. A very good copy. [together with:] Reference copies of The Prince and the Pauper and A Connecticut Yankee, with pages bookmarked at passages sourced in "The Ancient Regime."

        Traditions des Iles Samoa

Paris: Ernest Léroux, 1876. Octavo, pp. 589-604; a fine copy in original printed wrappers, spine split. Exceptionally scarce work on traditional beliefs in Samoa. This is an offprint with a specially printed wrapper - typically this might have been produced only for presentation by the author - from the Revue d'Anthropologie. Pierre Adolphe Lesson was the brother of René Primevère Lesson who sailed with and wrote about the Duperrey voyage. P.A. Lesson (1804-1888) was also a ship's doctor and spent much of the 1840s in Oceania. He also wrote Les Polynésiens et leurs migrations.
