Muirhead Bone: St. Mary Le Strand, Circa. 1902 (Pastel and charcoal, signed 290 x 170 mm)

      - Muirhead Bone (1876 -1953): ST. MARY LE STRAND, CIRCA.1902. Pastel and charcoal, signed 290 x 170 mm. A beautifully atmospheric record of St. Mary Le Strand at night with St. Clement Danes in the distance, a characteristic Bone portrayal. The foreground activity depicts the redevelopment which took place in the early years of the last century, when the graveyard was flattened, and the graves moved out of London in order to widen the Strand. Excellent condition. (Framed). SIR MUIRHEAD BONE 1876 -1953: Muirhead Bone was born in Partick, a suburb of Glasgow in 1876. As a young man he was apprenticed to a firm of architects and in the evenings attended classes at the Glasgow School of Art. Aware his vocation was art, and not architecture, he devoted his time almost exclusively to drawing. He continually sketched the streets, buildings and slums of Glasgow imbuing the urban decay with a dignity and sentiment he so admired in the work of the Dutch artists whose townscapes he had studied in the Glasgow Corporation Art Galleries. Bone moved to London in 1901, holding his first exhibition at the Carfax Gallery in 1902. His success both critically and financially was rapid. His status as an etcher in the early years of the last century placed him amongst the worlds most celebrated artists. It is not an exaggeration to say that his international reputation among collectors and the curators of the 'Great Print Rooms' of Europe and America was without parallel. He was appointed the first Official War Artist in World War I and was the doyen of War Artists in the Second World War. He was instrumental in the foundation of The Imperial War Museum, and became a Trustee of The Tate and The National Gallery. He was knighted for his services to art in 1937. Taste, fashion and the culture of the period have inevitably changed, but the essence of his inspiration and the 'curious hard beauty' of his work remains. 'Few drawings have been seen to equal his, since the time of Rembrandt, and in his studies of scaffold-covered buildings in the breaking or the making, he has followed an individual path and shown a feeling for the great harmonies of line which is beyond praise', Arthur M. Hind, Keeper of the Department of Prints, British Museum, 1933-1945. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Muirhead Bone: Edinburgh High Street, Circa. 1900 (Original pencil drawing, signed 195 x 140 mm)

      - Muirhead Bone (1876 -1953): EDINBURGH HIGH STREET, CIRCA.1900. Original pencil drawing, signed 195 x 140 mm. A drawing of the Royal Mile Edinburgh prior to the young artist's move to London in 1901. Bone's technical skill, poetic vision and developing fascination for scaffold-clad buildings are apparent in this superb drawing. The distinctive Tron church in the middle distance and the detailed moving crowd enhance the sense of place, an enduring characteristic of his work. The picture is in perfect condition having been re-mounted into its original Colnaghi's frame, which bears their label and the inscription, 'Sir Muirhead Bone, High Street Edinburgh'. (Framed). Provenance: James Bone; P&D Colnaghi & Co; Sir David Scott. Exhibited: London, Arts Council of Great Britain Drawings and Dry Points by Sir Muirhead Bone, 1876 -1953, 1955, No: 7.         CATALOGUE DE LA EXPOSITION ANNUELLE DES OEUVRES DES ARTISTES ET AMATEURS FRANÇAIS ET ÉTRANGERS AINSI QUE DES APPAREILS ET PRODUITS, APPARTENANT À TOUTES LES BRANCHES DE L'ART PHOTOGRAPHIQUE

Société Française de Photographie, Paris 1876 - 8vos., various paginations, from approx. 25 pp. to 65 pp. Original printed paper wrappers. 10 volumes, all published. The issue of 1859 has a dampstain running along the blank lower margin of the first 20 pp. and soiled wrappers. The 1861 issued has the neat stamp of André Jammes on the blank lower margin of the front wrapper. Minor wear or lacking a few tiny chips at the spines. Near fine. Housed in a newly made clamshell box of cloth with printed paper label. "Within months of its founding, the SFP began to organize photographic exhibitions; the first opened in September 1855 and coincided with the Paris Universal Exposition which featured a remarkably strong showing of photographic work. Between 1855 and 1876, the SPF organized eleven photographic( biennial) exhibitions - a continuous program of exhibitions which roughly coincided with the Paris painting salons. Exhibitions were open to members and non-members, and to foreigner practitioners. The SPF's exhibitions quickly achieved the status of the photographic salon on the order of the official painting salons. By far the most press recognition and critical attention accorded to photography was directed to the exhibitions of the SPF. With the exception of the 1855 exhibition, every later exhibition was accompanied by a catalogue which listed photographers by name and nationality, described the subject of submitted images, and identified both negative and print processes. They constitute an invaluable resource for researchers." From the article by Kathleen Stewart Howe, p. 1280-81, Encyclopedia of Nineteenth-Century Photography.A complete run of this biennial publication which began in 1857 with the DIEUXIÈME EXPOSITION and continues through to the ONZIÈME EXPOSITION. Titles vary slightly, as well as the printers, who include: Imprimerie de Mallet-Bachelier, Imprimerie et Lithographie de Renou et Maulde, and Imprimerie de Gauthier-Villars. Extremely rare with WorldCat locating only one full set at Harvard Fine Arts; with three locations for only the 1857 issue. [Attributes: First Edition]

Rare lithograph commemorating the farthest north record set by Commander Markham on May 12th. 1876, showing the five flags of the expedition. The British Arctic Expedition of 1875-1876, led by Sir George Nares, was another attempt by the Admiralty to reach the North Pole. Although the expedition failed in its goal to reach the Pole a sledging party under Commander Markham did in fact set the new record commemorated by this broadside.

        1st A POEM ON SHELLEY'S DEATH

Edited by H. Buxton Foman, Originally written not long after Shelley's death in 1822 in one of Mary Shelley's journals, this poem remained unpublished until 1876 when it was privately printed by Forman, loosely bound in the original card covers with title label fixed to upper cover, printed on very nice quality handmade paper, pages un-sewn with a loosely inserted engraved portrait of Shelley, 14pp, some mild corner creasing to the covers, a couple of minor marks within, else in very nice clean condition, no indication of the size of the print run for this printing, but I would imagine it was a very small, very scarce

        Letters and Social Aims

1876 - EMERSON, Ralph Waldo. Letters and Social Aims. Boston: James R. Osgood, 1876 [i.e. 1875]. Octavo, original terracotta cloth. Housed in a half morocco chemise and full morocco slipcase. $11,000.First edition, first printing, association copy, of the last volume of essays published during Emerson's lifetime, bearing the ownership signature of Emerson's neighbor, Jeanie M. LeBrun, and additionally signed for her by Emerson and dated by him in the year of publication, "6 Jan 1876."This was the last volume of essay published during Emerson's lifetime. By the 1870s, Emerson had faded and "gradually slipped into a serene senility in which his mind finally became a calm blank" (OCAL). "A longtime friend, James Elliot Cabot, was enlisted by the family to help put Emerson's literary manuscripts in order and prepare his lectures for delivery and his writings for publication". Cabot and Emerson's daughter Ellen put together a final volume of essays, Letters and Social Aims (1876), some reprinted ('The Comic,' 'Quotation and Originality,' and 'Persian Poetry') and others drawn from Emerson's manuscripts ('Poetry and Imagination,' 'Social Aims,' 'Eloquence,' 'Resources,' 'Progress of Culture,' 'Inspiration,' 'Greatness,' and 'Immortality')". Emerson died quietly in Concord and was buried at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, close to the graves of the Alcotts, Hawthornes, and Thoreaus" (ANB). First printing, with "N" on page 209 and with "inviolate" and "choices" on page 308 (changed respectively in the second and third printings to "inviolable" and "choice"). Though this work is dated 1876, the first printing took place on December 16, 1875 and was first advertised on Christmas of that year in Publisher's Weekly. Myerson A43.1a. BAL 5272. This copy belonged to and bears the ownership signature of Jean M. LeBrun, a Concord neighbor of the Emersons, as well as the Thoreaus, Alcotts, and Hawthornes. LeBrun's signature is dated Christmas day, just days after publication, suggesting that this book may have been a gift to her""one that she embellished by securing Emerson's signature. LeBrun would later attain her own minor fame for a piece she wrote to the Boston Advertiser in 1883 (later separately published in booklet form) that responded to the 1882 first book-length biography of Thoreau. The biography was written by Frank B. Sanborn, yet another Concord neighbor who worked as a schoolteacher instructing the children of Emerson, Hawthorne, and James. Sanborn also proposed to Emerson's daughter, Edith, who rejected him. In his biography of Thoreau, Sanborn presented an unflattering and ungenerous portrait of Thoreau's mother. Jean LeBrun, in her piece for the Advertiser undertook to defend both Thoreau and his mother posthumously.Interior with only a couple faint stains, light rubbing to extremities of binding. A near-fine copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

The Effects of Cross and Self Fertilization in the Vegetable Kingdom.

London: John Murray,, 1876. Octavo. Original green cloth, covers blocked with a blind panel, spine lettered and decorated in gilt. Errata slip inserted at p. 1; diagram at p. 53; 109 letterpress tables. Spine slightly darkened, a couple of black marks to front cover, very minor wear to spine ends and lower tips, hinges cracked but holding. A very good copy. First edition. Darwin's research on fertilisation in plants was an offshoot of his work on evolution and natural selection. To demonstrate that genetic variation gave organisms an advantage in the struggle for survival, he performed experiments demonstrating that self-fertilisation weakened plants in comparison with those that had been cross-fertilised. Darwin considered this volume to be a compliment to his 1862 book, Fertilisation of Orchids, though this one was more technical and the initial print run was low, with only 1,500 copies selling in the first year.

Report of the Exploring Expedition. in 1859

1876 - MACOMB, John N. and NEWBERRY, John S. Report of the Exploring Expedition From Santa Fé, New Mexico, To the Junction of the Grand and Green Rivers of the Great Colorado of the West in 1859. Washington: Government Printing Office, 1876. Quarto, contemporary three-quarter navy morocco, raised bands, marbled endpapers and edges. $6500.First edition of the account of Macomb and Newberry's expedition from New Mexico to Colorado and the Grand Canyon, with 22 full page plates, including eleven chromolithographed plates, eight lithographed plates of fossils and three lithographed plates of landscapes, along with "one of the most beautiful maps ever published by the Army" (Wheat), association copy of Vannoy Hartrog Manning, a Confederate Civil War officer in the Civil War who later served as Mississippi's Representative to the U.S. Congress (1877-83)."In June 1859 Capt. John N. Macomb, chief topographical officer in New Mexico, was ordered to lead an expedition northward along the Old Spanish Trail in search of the desired military road into Utah. Twenty thousand dollars was appropriated for the expedition, and Macomb was authorized to take along John Strong Newberry". Macomb [and] Newberry". made their way". across the tortured landscape toward the junction of the Green and Grand rivers. At one point their view swept across a wide expanse of the country and Newberry wrote that it was "˜everywhere deeply cut by a tangled maze of canyons, and thickly set with towers, castles, and spires of the most varied and striking forms; the most wonderful monuments of erosion, which our eyes, already experienced in objects of this kind, had ever beheld" (Goetzmann, 394-7). Macomb's geographical report was initially issued without Newberry's geological report (because Newberry was still working for the Sanitary Commission in the west), but publication was delayed for 15 years owning to the Civil War, allowing time for Newberry's contribution to be included. The plates depict the various canyons and rivers the expedition encountered, as well as eight geological plates. The folding map, measuring 30 by 36 inches, "is one of the most beautiful". ever published by the army. Like Ives' maps it was done by "˜Baron' F.W. Egloffstein". Again he speaks of the "˜Big Cañon' of the Colorado River, thus making it clear that the term Grand Cañon had not yet emerged". This is a landmark map" (Wheat IV, 142-3). Howes M179. Wagner-Camp 379b. Graff 2647. Farquhar 23. This volume was specially bound for Vannoy Hartrog Manning, who was a Representative for Mississippi in the 45th, 46th and 47th U.S. Congresses (1877-83) after serving the Confederacy in the Civil War as Colonel of the 3rd Arkansas Infantry and 2nd Arkansas Battalion. With gilt-lettered "Van. H. Manning" printed to the spine end.Text and plates very fresh and clean, several expertly repaired small closed tears to gutter edge of folding map, slight edge-wear, faint rubbing to boards. A scarce near-fine copy with a memorable provenance. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

CATALOGUE DE LA EXPOSITION ANNUELLE DES OEUVRES DES ARTISTES ET AMATEURS FRANÇAIS ET ÉTRANGERS AINSI QUE DES APPAREILS ET PRODUITS, APPARTENANT À TOUTES LES BRANCHES DE L'ART PHOTOGRAPHIQUE

Paris: Société Française de Photographie, 1876. First editions. 8vos., various paginations, from approx. 25 pp. 1280-81, Encyclopedia of Nineteenth-Century Photography. A complete run of this biennial publication which began in 1857 with the DIEUXIÈME EXPOSITION and continues through to the ONZIÈME EXPOSITION.
