        Pictures by Daniel Maclise, R.A

London: Virtue and Co., 1876. Decorative Cloth. Good. Maclise, Daniel. [1876] Contains 11 engravings of Maclise?'s work, presented as tissue guarded plates. Engravings by R. Graves, F. Joubert, S. Sangster, J. Franck et al. 58 pp. Folio— 35x27 cm. Green moiré effect cloth binding with black and gilt tooled decoration and titling to both boards and backstrip. Bevelled edges. Aeg. Corners and top / tail of backstrip worn as well as a few points on the bevelled edge. There is a reasonable amount of foxing, but fortunately this does not affect the front of the plates. Note: The binding for this book requires attention. The bands have become detached from the boards, the quires are still being held together, by the bands, but the entire text block is unstable and requires some work. The good thing is that apart from a 3 inch split at the ffep the endpapers are intact. I could arrange for my bookbinder to undertake the necessary repairs and these would be charged at cost. N. B. This is a heavy book [1.8 kg] and so postage outside the UK will require a supplement. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall.

        BEAUCHAMP'S CAREER

1876 - In Three Volumes. London: Chapman and Hall, 1876. Original green cloth decorated in black. First Edition of this novel, published actually in November 1875, near the end of its serialization (August 1874 - December 1875) in The Fortnightly Review.~BEAUCHAMP is the first, and greatest, of his [Meredith's] less deeply personal books. It is political. It dabbles with ideology. It has much to say -- and nearly all of it severely critical -- of the condition of England in the middle 1870s. It is a strange, absorbing book, one that makes demands on the reader. It is lyrical, oracular, subtle in its shifting point of view, and funny too. BEAUCHAMP preserves its greatness as a political novel for the main reason that it is the expression of a paradox. It promotes no cause. It isn't Tory. It isn't radical. It floats the notion, everywhere now gaining support, that small is beautiful. [Williams]~This is an unusually clean, near-fine copy, with very little wear (a few faint cover marks, one small hole near the top of one spine) -- quite remarkable for a three-decker novel, as most copies (but not this one) went straight to the lending libraries where they would be plastered with labels and then rented out. Meredith's two last novels, from the 1890s when the libraries were dying out, do frequently turn up in this condition -- but not the earlier ones, such as BEAUCHAMP'S CAREER. Collie IX; Sadleir 1688 (and pp 380-381, where he ranks this novel eighth in scarcity among Meredith's fifteen works of fiction). Loosely inserted is the 1948 customs declaration when the most-recent owner of this set bought it from Myers & Co. of New Bond Street. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The pages edges, gilt all-around, as bright, clean and without tears. There are no stamps or attachments in either volume. There are a few pencil notations, but no ink or other indelible marks.         The Effects of Cross and Self Fertilisation in the Vegetable Kingdom

London: John Murray,, 1876. Octavo (180 × 119 mm). Contemporary brown half morocco by Woolman of Stockton-on-Tees (with his ticket), decorative gilt spine, marbled edges and endpapers. Armorial bookplate of William Kirk to front pastedown, his gilt crest in tail compartment of spine. A few neat marginal pencillings, paper flaw in blank margin at foot of p. 465, bound without the errata slip. A clean handsome copy. First edition, with the three-line errata slip facing page viii. Darwin's research on fertilisation in plants was an offshoot of his work on evolution and natural selection. To demonstrate that genetic variation gave organisms an advantage in the struggle for survival, he performed experiments demonstrating that self-fertilisation weakened plants in comparison with those that had been cross-fertilised. Darwin considered this volume to be a compliment to his 1862 book, Fertilisation of Orchids, though this one was more technical and the initial print run was low, with only 1500 copies selling in the first year.

Longfellow compares the flowers to the Flower Dial at Upsala "which marked the hours by the blooming of the flowers, that composed it. These mark the years on a larger dial, and suggest perhaps graver thoughts." Longfellow then quotes the first stanza, four lines, of Felicia Dorothea Hemans's poem "The Dial of Flowers." SIGNED "Henry W. Longfellow." A touching and poetic letter. Horsford was the wife of Eben Norton Horsford, professor of chemistry at Harvard and a neighbor of Longfellow's. A few faint glue stains from where a tissue engraving, still present, was once attached. Near Fine [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Paris, Guillaumin, 1876.. Octavo. Pp. 135. Printed on thick paper. Bound in the original stiff printed wrappers, bit thumbed, old decorative paper label to front. In about fine condition. Overall an excellent copy. ~ First edition, very rare in the original printed wrappers. Michel Chevalier (1806-1879) a French economist. In 1840 he was appointed professor of political economy at the Collège de France and subsequently became one of the most eminent economists of his time and a great influence on the economic policies of France. He negotiated and successfully concluded the French-English commercial agreement in 1860, followed by similar treaties with other countries. He predicted, as early as 1857, the decline in the value of gold. Henri Cernuschi (1821-1896), Italian politician and economist. Cernuschi is best known for his publications on financial questions, more especially bimetallism.         The Works

Sunnyside, Orpington, Kent: George Allen,, 1876?-1884. 11 volumes, octavo (211 × 134 mm). Contemporary royal blue calf over bevelled boards, titles and volume numbers gilt to second, third and fourth compartments, raised bands with foliate roll in black, fleurons to first, fifth and sixth compartments, triple fillet panels in blind to the boards, fleuron corner-pieces, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Plates, and illustrations to the text, series title page to each. Lightly rubbed with the occasional scuff, light toning to the text, but overall a very good set. Mixed editions as usual, titles, dates and editions listed below. Attractively presented set of Ruskin's own "accumulative edition" of his works. They were printed and published in Kent by George Allen, a skilled joiner who became a pupil of Ruskin's at the London Working Man's College, progressing there to become his assistant drawing master in 1857, and subsequently serving as Ruskin's general assistant, engraver, and publisher over a period of 50 years. It was late in 1870 that Ruskin decided to set Allen up as a publisher in order to avoid the evils of the publishing trade; " At a week's notice, and without any previous experience, Allen started upon this enterprise at his home at Heathfield Cottage, Keston, Kent, so giving rise to a sarcastic journalistic reference to Ruskin's idea of publishing 'in a field in Kent'. At first he worked mainly as a distributor … However, he was also authorised to launch the 'revised and enlarged' edition of Ruskin's works, which focused attention on his social, cultural, and economic theories rather than his views on the visual arts … In 1874 Allen secured a loan from Ruskin in order to build himself Sunnyside Villa at Orpington, Kent; he developed his business in an outhouse on the property and tended its garden in his spare time. From that time Ruskin officially dubbed him his publisher, and publication of all of Ruskin's books was gradually transferred to him" (ODNB) The set comprises of the following essays: Sesame & Lilies - 1883, 5th edition; Munera Pulveris - 1880, second thousand; Aratra Pentelici - 1879, second thousand; The Eagle's Nest - 1880, second thousand; Time and Tide - 1882, second thousand; The Crown of Wild Olive - 1880, second thousand; Ariadne Florentina - 1876, first edition; Val d'Arno - 1882, first edition; The Queen of the Air - 1883, revised edition; The Two Paths - 1884, New Edition, second thousand; A Joy for Ever - 1880, first edition.

        The Adventures of Tom Sawyer

Hartford, Conn: The American Publishing Company, 1876. First edition. Very Good. First printing, with the half-title and the frontis illustration on separate leaves, printed on wove paper. Collates complete as per BAL 3369. Only 5,000 copies of this first printing were originally issued. A Very Good copy in the publisher's original blue cloth, stamped in black and gilt. Rebacked, preserving the original spine, with the inner hinges mended. Cloth lightly soiled, internal contents generally in attractive condition. One of the classic American novels, Twain's bildungsroman follows the adventures of Tom Sawyer - and his friend Huck Finn -- in St. Petersburg, Missouri told with Twain's characteristic and unmatchable wit and humor. It would become his best-selling book and its sequel, "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn," is arguably the greatest American novel of all time. "Mr. Samuel Clemens has taken the boy of the Southwest for the hero of his new book... and has presented him with a fidelity to circumstance which loses no charm by being realistic in the highest degree, and which gives incomparably the best picture of life in that region as yet known to fiction." (Contemporary Atlantic Monthly Review). Very Good.
