HISTORY OF CHEYENNE AND NORTHERN WYOMING EMBRACING THE GOLD FIELDS OF THE BLACK HILLS, POWDER RIVER AND BIG HORN COUNTRIES...

Omaha: Printed at the Herald Steam Book and Job Printing House, 1876. Original printed green wrappers, expertly rebacked in matching green paper. Wrappers a bit wrinkled, a few small tears in edges. Faint circular ink stamp on front wrapper and titlepage. Very clean internally. Very good. In a cloth clamshell box, spine gilt. A fundamental and very scarce work on the region, based on the author's twelve years of residence in the Rocky Mountains and on the plains. He recounts details of the settlement of Cheyenne, events in its early history, the actions of the vigilantes, the pioneer press, early commercial endeavors, etc. The thirteen terminal pages of this work comprise a business directory, including ads for the Union Pacific Railroad, stage lines, land promoters, merchants, etc. "The work is the result of personal observation and experiences in the Dakota- Wyoming country extending over a period of some twelve years on the plains and in the Rocky Mountains. Triggs set out in June of 1863 from Davenport, Iowa, as Lieutenant of the Seventh Iowa Cavalry. He accompanied the command of General Mitchell on the Sioux-Cheyenne expedition of 1864, was then assigned to duty at Fort Halleck; joined the staff of General Curtis at Fort Laramie; fought in the Indian Campaigns of '65, retiring as Captain. From that year onward he devoted himself to prospecting and exploring in the Wyoming Territory" - Eberstadt (asking $200 for a copy in 1937). Triggs produced the first directory of Laramie City in 1875. The map, drawn by W.M. Masi, covers the present state of Wyoming. As a whole, this work comprises one of the earliest and most important histories of the Wyoming-Dakota region. "Exceedingly rare" - Adams, SIX-GUNS. "Of greatest importance"- MIDLAND NOTES.

The Holy Bible: Containing the Old and New Testaments; translated literally from the original tongues.

Hartford: American Publishing Co. 8vo (25.5 cm, 10"). [2], 892, 276 pp.. 1876 First and only edition of this interestingly nonconformist translation, done by a vocal suffragist known for protesting the taxation of unenfranchised women. Julia Evelina Smith (1792–1886), one of the five celebrated, talented siblings sometimes referred to as the "Marvelous Smith Sisters of Connecticut," became a member of the Sandemanian sect after much independent religious study. She chose to have her private labor of love published to serve as a public demonstration of the intellectual capabilities of women, rebuking one dubious banker with the comment that she "thought it just as well to spend money to print this Bible as to put it into a thousand-dollar shawl" (New York Times, 9 March 1886). Smith endeavored to provide an extremely literal, word-for-word rendition to enhance her and her sisters' understanding of the text. Regarding the rather tangled results, she notes in her preface that "readers of this book may think it strange that I have made such use of the tenses . . . It seems to me that the original Hebrew had no regard to time, and that the Bible speaks for all ages." Priding herself as a student of ancient languages particularly on her Hebrew, this translator closely followed the Masoretic text for the O.T. and => consistently used "Jehovah" for the Tetragrammaton. Publisher's pebbled brown cloth, title and translator's name simply gilt-stamped within blind-stamped panel; recently rebacked and original spine reapplied (spine slightly rumpled), one corner restored, other corners mildly rubbed. Hinges (inside) reinforced. Front pastedown with affixed newspaper clipping on the Smith sisters. One page with short tear from lower edge, not extending into text; pages clean. => A nice copy of a very desirable Bible.

Thirteen Volumes of The Waverley Novels

Edinburgh - W.P. Nimmo, Hay and Mitchell 1876 - An attractive set of the Waverley Novels by Sir Walter Scott, in decorative half-morocco binding, and comprising the complete twenty six works included in this edition, in thirteen volumes. Titles are as follows:Waverley and Guy ManneringWoodstock and The Fair Maid of PerthAntiquary and Rob RoyPeveril of The Peak and Quentin DurwardCastle Dangerous and Highland WidowAbbot and KenilworthOld Mortality and Legend of MontroseBetrothed and TalismanSt Ronan's Well and RedgauntletIvanhoe and MonsteryAnne of Geierstein and Count Robert of ParisPirate and Fortunes of NigelSir Walter Scott was a Scottish historical novelist, playwright and poet. The first English language author to have a truly international career in his lifetime, Scott's works are still read today, and many of his works are considered classics of both English and Scottish literature. During his own era, and for nearly a century subsequently, the works were among the most popular and widely read in Europe. Although Scott had attained celebrity status through his poetry during his lifetime, he is most famously remembered for his novels which were originally published anonymously under the title of 'The Author of Waverley'. Here, twenty six of the works are presented alongside biographical and critical notices by the Reverend P. Hately Waddell, with additional glosseries of Scottish phrases and foreign words, as well as forntispiece plates and decorative title pages. Several volumes contain the book plate of one Robert G. Shephard Dalkin. Condition: In decorative half-calf binding with gilt detailing and paper-covered boards. Externally smart, there is wear to the extremities, joints and backstrip, with odd minor wear to boards. Internally, the pages are firmly bound and generally bright and clean aside from spotting to endpages and the odd spot throughout. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Royal Asiatic Society Offprints. 400 Title Collection. 1876 to 1990

1876, First Edition. A collection of over 400 rare and uncommon Offprints from the prestigious Journal of The Royal Asiatic Society. A huge and wide ranging selection that would prove very expensive to buy individually and be very time consuming to assemble, if you even could easily do so. A full list of the titles in the collection is available on request. The condition will reflect the fragile and ephemeral format of the production; very good overall. PLEASE NOTE: These are not reprints or extracts, they are rare Offprints, not extracts or reprints. An offprint is produced by the publisher's of journals in very small quantities, with the usual intention of allowing the author to present them to friends or colleagues and for review. The printing is done simultaneously with the main journal, and then they are bound up in specially printed wrappers with the author's name and title printed. They are considered quite collectable and desirable due to their intimate connection to the author of the work, rather than the more mass produced nature of the full journal. The Royal Asiatic Society is dedicated to the serious study of the culture, history and languages of Asia. Founded in 1823 by the Sanskrit scholar Sir Henry Thomas Colebrooke, and has counted many distinguished and important explorers, writers and eminent individuals among its members, including Sir Richard Burton (1821-90), Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941), and Sir Wilfred Thesiger. A full list of the titles in the collection is available on request. Size: Octavo (standard book size). Item Type: Journal. Quantity Available: 1. Category: Royal Asiatic Society; Britain/UK; Inventory No: 196913.

        The Adventures of Tom Sawyer

Hartford, Conn: The American Publishing Company, 1876. First edition. Very Good. First printing, with the half-title and the frontis illustration on separate leaves, printed on wove paper. Collates complete as per BAL 3369 with the triple fly-leaves on laid paper, front and back, and four pages of publisher's ads following the novel. Only 5,000 copies of this first printing were issued (compared to 30,000 for Huck Finn). A Very Good copy in the publisher's original blue cloth, stamped in black and gilt. Without any repairs to the cloth (which is uncommon). Rear inner hinge professionally repaired, otherwise untouched and in very good shape internally. Chips to the cloth at the spine ends, less than 1/4 of a inch at the top and 1/16 of an inch at the base, some fraying to the corners, otherwise a tidy copy. One of the classic American novels, Twain's bildungsroman follows the adventures of Tom Sawyer - and his friend Huck Finn -- in St. Petersburg, Missouri told with Twain's characteristic and unmatchable wit and humor. It would become his best-selling book and its sequel, "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn," is arguably the greatest American novel of all time. "Mr. Samuel Clemens has taken the boy of the Southwest for the hero of his new book… and has presented him with a fidelity to circumstance which loses no charm by being realistic in the highest degree, and which gives incomparably the best picture of life in that region as yet known to fiction." (Contemporary Atlantic Monthly Review). Very Good.

On the return journey he picked up George Nares's dispatches from the Carey Islands, bringing home the latest news of Nares's expedition" (ODNB). Young was later knighted for his services in connection with Nares's expedition. The author was a well-known American war correspondent who had made his name with his despatches from the Franco-Prussian War, his account of Skobelev's annexation of Khiva, and later for his reporting of the Turkish atrocities against the Bulgarians in 1876 and the Russo-Turkish was of 1877-8. MacGahan is still remembered in Bulgaria for his rôle in the fight for Bulgarian independence, with a street and a school in the capital, Sofia, named for him.

RARE !. AN EARLY JAPANESE EDITION OF GRAY'S ANATOMY This is a famous anatomical atlas, done after the celebrated classic: Henry Gray: ANATOMY OF THE HUMAN BODY, London 1858. * THE JAPANESE EDITION: This is an early copy and translation of the Henry Gray book. * COPPER-ETCHED ILLUSTRATIONS: This stunning work consists of fine copper-etched engravings: vol.1: 152; vol.2: 329, for a grand total of 500 fine engravings. The work is complete in 2 volumes. *** EDITOR/PUBLISHER: The work was edited and published by Noriaki Matsumura of Tsuruga, Fukui prefecture. It was distributed by Zembei Maekawa, Osaka, and also Toshisuke Shimamura, Tokyo, Meiji 9th year [1876]. *** THE BINDING: The work was beautifully bound in an accordion folded format, in elegant gold-brocade silk cloth cover, showing pine trees as the motif. *** FAITHFULLY FOLLOWING GRAY'S ANATOMICAL ATLAS: The Japanese edition faithfully follows Gray's drawings and format as found in the original. Each example is properly titled, showing the names of all illustrated items, arranged in Gray's order. *** ALTERNATE TITLE: This work has an alternate title: GRAY-SHI KAIBOH KUNMO ZU. *** THE FINE COPPER-ETCHHINGS: The work was completely printed from copper-etched plates, and therefore reflect the minute attention to detail in the illustrations. Copper etched books in Japan were very rarely done, and only for early Japanese medical book, which required the most detailed of illustrations. The process was rare and very expensive. *** CONDITION: The work is bound in the original cloth. There a few old worm holes mostly mended from the verso [typical of period Japanese books], nicely restored from with Washi [hand-made] paper and rice glue. The book is solid, and a few of the accordion folds are double folded but solid. . The illustrations very bright & clean, no fading, there are a few tiny stains [tiny rust spots] on one page, and another illustration was amateurishly hand-colored, else no other issues. All in all a very nice copy. *** INDIGO-BLUE FOLDING CLOTH CHITSU: The set of two volumes are contained in a folding cloth Chitsu, with two bone pegs. *** REFERENCE: Henry Gray: ANATOMY OF THE HUMAN BODY, London 1858. . The English anatomist Henry Gray was born in 1827. He studied the development of the endocrine glands and spleen and in 1853 was appointed Lecturer on Anatomy at St George's Hospital Medical School in London. In 1855, he approached his colleague Henry Vandyke Carter with his idea to produce an inexpensive and accessible anatomy textbook for medical students. Dissecting unclaimed bodies from workhouse and hospital mortuaries through the Anatomy Act of 1832, the two worked for 18 months on what would form the basis of the book. Their work was first published in 1858 by John William Parker in London * Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gray%27s_Anatomy *** Not in: MESTLER, Gordon E.A GALAXY OF OLD JAPANESE MEDICAL BOOKS WITH MISCELLANEOUS NOTES ON EARLY MEDICINE IN JAPAN. The simple reason this was not found in Mestler, is that it Mestler did not find any copies of this on his two trips to Japan in the 1950's. * Not in: KERLEN, H.         LIFE STUDIES OF THE GREAT ARMY

New York: Harry Johnson, 1876. Large folio. Original publisher's cloth, gilt. Front board present, gilt worn away; rear board lacking. Cover somewhat dampsoiled and worn. Light foxing and soiling, heavier to first plate, though mostly confined to margins elsewhere. A few plates with small marginal tears or chips. Good. Edwin Forbes was one of the most notable illustrators of the American Civil War. From 1862 on he was a correspondent for HARPER'S WEEKLY, producing illustrations to accompany war news. During most of this period he accompanied the Army of the Potomac on its campaigns in Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. Although Forbes portrays battle scenes, he was much more interested in depicting the everyday life of the private soldier in camp and on the march. Typically his scenes include such topics as "Washing Day," the camp cook, vendors of supplies to soldiers, picket duty, and other incidents of camp life. A number of other illustrations show life on the march, fording streams, the supply train, and the like. All of the plates are etchings, evidently executed by Forbes himself from his original drawings (which were mainly pen and ink wash). The forty plates contain fifty-nine scenes, since some plates have two or three scenes, and one has five. A table of contents appears on the inside of the front board, where each plate has a more lengthy textual gloss as well. The front board proclaims the publication was sold "to subscribers only." It divides the plates into ten parts, so it would seem the publication was issued over a period of time, although all plates are dated 1876. A major graphic record of the Civil War, by one of its most notable recorders.

        GETTYSBURG. REPULSE OF LONGSTREET'S ASSAULT

Boston: James Drummond, 1876. Some tanning, with some darker vertical columns of browning. A very good example of this amazingly detailed engraving. A superb panoramic steel engraving capturing in fantastic detail John Bachelder's conception of the climactic event of the Battle of Gettysburg: Longstreet's assault, including Pickett's Charge, on the third day against the Union center at Cemetery Hill. On July 3, 1863 Gen. Robert E. Lee ordered Lt. Gen. Longstreet and his commanders (including Pickett) to assault Union General Meade's positions on Cemetery Ridge. Over 12,000 Confederate soldiers marched across the battlefield in an attempt to breach the Union lines, but were caught out in the open, taking heavy losses, suffering approximately a 50% casualty rate. This advance marked the "high-water mark of the Confederacy" and is arguably the turning point of the Civil War; as the war would continue for another two years, the Confederates never launched another offensive campaign. This fascinating engraving was executed by H.B. Hall Jr., based on a larger painting by James Walker under the supervision of Bachelder. John Bachelder was a portrait and landscape painter, lithographer, and photographer. During the Civil War he accompanied the Army of the Potomac and made many sketches of military life and important battles. He is best known as the historian of the Battle of Gettysburg and was a dominant factor in the preservation of the Gettysburg Battlefield.

Rochester, NY: D.M. Dewey, 1876. Hardcover. Poor. Half-bound in black leather with beige cloth over boards, 4to (11 inches [27.9 cm] tall), pp. unpaginated (plates numbered in pencil at top corner), 31 hand-colored plates, most with "D.M. Dewey's Series, Colored From Nature : American Fruits and Flowers" printed at foot. Front pastedown with the penciled name "Wm. Kettlewell Esq. / Nurseryman / London" [John William Kettlewell is listed in the "Dictionary of British and Irish Botanists and Horticulturists : Including Plant Collectors, Flower Painters and Garden Designers" by Ray Desmond. London. 1994], as being "fl. 1860's " [active 1860's]; a museum and deaccession rubber stamp, price list in pencil and a tally in pencil to rear pastedown. Volume poor and mostly disbound, backstrip ragged and partially detached, plates soiled and toned with pencil marks, cuts and tears, old tape repairs near gutters, three plates trimmed to the smaller "pocket book" size and a fourth print sized - but not cut - and annotated in pencil "Size of Pocket book". Many plates have also obviously been removed by the nurseryman who worked with this salesman's tool. Nurseryman's books are uncommon survivors, and desirable in any condition, given their intended use. The terminal plate "Austrian Pine" has printed on verso "The Centennial Trees / 1776 - 1876 / ... The great centennial year of this nation, 1876, will be thus commemorated by thousands all over the land... / copies of the Declaration of Independence complete with facsimile of the signatures of the signers ... Tree agents will find this a desirable gift for their customers." including instructions for holding such a party and at what point to sing "Hail Columbia" and "The star spangled banner." and also gives "Rochester, N.Y." as Dewey's address on recto. Some plates have also been printed on different paper and in a slightly different style, indicating possibly, that pages were added or removed as stock and customer preferences changed. Ref.
