[SEDER TEFILAH] GEBETE FÃœR DEN ÖFFENTLICHEN GOTTESDIENST DER TEMPELGEMEINDE AHAWATH CHESED. VOL I.

New York : Rubens & Freund,. 1875. Hardback. Original Boards. 8vo. 249 pages ; 15cm. In German with German and Hebrew. Title translates into English as, ?Order For Sabbath, Festivals, And Weekdays: Prayers for the Public Worship of the Temple Congregation Ahawath Chesed. ? Singerman 2511. Huebsch was born in Liptovsky Svaty Mikulas, Hungary, in 1830. He served as an Orthodox rabbi before earning a Ph. D. From the University of Prague in 1861. In that year he became the rabbi of the Neu- Synagogue in Prague and in 1866 he left for America to become the rabbi of Ahawath Chesed in New York. It was under his direction that the synagogue adopted certain reforms. Huebsch was a founder of HUC. He died in 1884. Huebsch first published (this work) in 1872 because the revision of ?Minhag America, ? begun in 1869, was taking too long. Although (it) contains less Hebrew than Minhag America and omits many more prayers, according to Eric L. Friedland ?it is a prime example of what can be seen as a subtle gradation between Reform and Conservative liturgies ... The many ab initio Hebrew alterations and the translational permutations notwithstanding, the Huebsch rite has, after all is said and done, a remarkably traditional aspect. ?" (Goldman, 62) OCLC lists 8 copies worldwide. Back hinge starting, some edgewear on boards. In about very good condition. (AMR-47-14) .

Das Königl[ich] Württemberg[ische] Haupt- und Landgestüt. Marbach, no printer, 1875.

1875. 24 vintage photographs (albumen prints) by Ch. Schmid, Reutlingen, mounted on cardboard with printed captions (c. 487 x 320 mm; images c. 270 x 210 mm to 190 x 137 mm). With 4 pp of letterpress text (folio, green papered spine). Fine set of original photographs showing the Royal Wuerttemberg Stud in Marbach and its famous horses. Owned by Wilhelm, King of Württemberg, Marbach was the first Arabian stud in Europe. From 1852 to 1871 it was directed by Baron Julius von Hügel, who purchased valuable stock from the Egyptian stud of Abbas Pasha, "thus raising it to the highest standard of excellence" (W. R. Brown, The Horse of the Desert, p. 161/166). Hügel was succeeded by Cäsar Paul von Hofacker (1831-96), who issued the present photo series and also composed the accompanying text: the latter discusses the history of the Stud and its horses, including the stallion Sanspareil, son of the Arabian Bajan and bred in 1816; in 1860 another pure-bred Arabian was acquired from the Wuerttemberg Weil Stud. Among the photoportraits are the pure-bred Arabian Zarif, his daughter Zinka, and the stallion Shah. Well-preserved.

The Chinese Opium-Smoker. Twelve Illustrations; Facsimiles of Native Drawings. With a Translation of the Original Chinese Text Accompanying them, and Appendixes. London, S. W. Partington, no date (1881).

Pp. 44. Including 12 coloured lithographed illustrations with descriptive text opposite each plate. A printed letter by Storrs Turner, loosely inserted. Original printed wrappers, spine ends chipped. A couple of leaves with rusty staple marks at inner margin. Second, enlarged edition (first 1875?) of this anti-opium pamphlet. The illustrations depict the gradual downfall of a opium smoker. Commencing with a man on a couch in his mansion, followed by images of the dissipation of the man who becomes a victim of the drug and eventually leaves home and becomes a homeless beggar. It's believed that the sketches were made by a Christian Chinaman named Tai and later published by the Chinese Anti-Opium Society of Canton. The pictures were sent to England and published with an English translation in the 1870's. This enlarged edition includes a.o. a letter by Commissioner Lin to the Queen of England. Reverend Frederick Storrs Turner was the founder of the Society for the Suppression of the Opium Trade, and the editor of the Society's newspaper "Friend of China". A printed letter by Storrs Turner adressed to "the Editor" stating that this pamphlet was not published for profit "but with the hope of increasing the public interest in a subject of great national importance", is loosely inserted.

Slave Trade. No. 1 (1875). Correspondence with British representatives and agents abroad, and reports from Naval Officers, relative to the East African Slave Trade. Presented to both Houses of Parliament by command of Her Majesty. 1875. [C.-1168]. London, Harrison and Sons, 1875.

1875. Folio. VI, 139, (1) pp. Publisher's printed blue wrappers. Rare British parliamentary papers and correspondence with local agents and officers on the slave trade, including a report on the results of the treaties entered into with the Sultans of Oman and Zanzibar and of British ships cruising off Ras al Hadd and the southern coast of Arabia. Also, a report to the effect that of the nearly 12,000 slaves marched north from East Africa since December 1873, "few, if any, have reached Arabia, and none have been shipped for the Persian Gulf [...] There is still undoubtedly a constant supply of slaves from the Portuguese Settlements in the Mozambique to the coast of Madagascar, and it is even supposed to be the intention of some of the Arab slave-dealers to attempt to run dhows from the north end of Madagascar direct to the Persian Gulf in large seaworthy vessels" (p. 120). The relevant sections are "Zanzibar" (pp.1-89); "Muscat" (p. 90); "Reports from Naval Officers [relative to the East African Slave Trade]" (pp. 96-139). - Neat stamp on the upper cover.         Autograph letter signed in full

      - On a postal card (ca. 89 x 139 mm.). Dated Mulhouse, November 17, [19]25. In black ink. With a photograph of La Pierre des bavardes at Mulhouse to verso. With original envelope with Ravel's address, Le Belvédère Montfort L'Amaury (S. & O.), printed to verso. In French (with translation). The composer makes arrangements to meet an old friend."Perhaps I will leave with you for Montfort if I can't take the train on Thursday evening."Together with a waist-length postcard photograph of the composer in his later years published in Paris. Slightly creased; small stain to lower right edge; date slightly smudged; envelope slightly worn and soiled; two postmarks and postage stamp to recto. French composer Maurice Ravel (1875-1937) "was one of the most original and sophisticated musicians of the early 20th century. His instrumental writing - whether for solo piano, for ensemble or for orchestra - explored new possibilities, which he developed at the same time as (or even before) his great contemporary Debussy, and his fascination with the past and with the exotic resulted in music of a distinctively French sensibility and refinement."         [Binding title (also at the head of each plate):] Nil-Album. [Vienna, Leopold Sommer and Comp., Anna Lynker and Conrad Greve, ca. 1875].

1875. Oblong Imperial 1mo (53.4 x 70 cm). Album with 32 chromolithographed plates (26 measuring 25 x 35.5 cm; 6 measuring 36.5 x 60.5), mounted on paperboard leaves, each leaf with lithographed title "Nil-Album" (above), and caption, imprint and note that they were painted from life by Anna Lynker (30) or Hans Sattler (2). All chromolithographed by Conrad Greve. Printed by various Viennese printers: K. K. Hof- und Staatsdruckerei, E. Köke, M. Fein, Conrad Greve, Leopold Sommer and Comp. and Johann Haupt. [32] chromolithographed plates. Contemporary red half goatskin morocco, textured-cloth sides, the front board with the title "Nil-Album" (on the spine "Nil Album") in gold, watered-silk pattern endpapers. An extraordinary and extremely rare album with breath-taking colour-printed views of Egypt and Nubia, made after watercolours painted from life at the sites. We have located only one other copy, and it has fewer plates than the present copy. Although there is no title-page, each plate and the contemporary binding have the title "Nil-Album" (Nile album). The plates show a dozen ancient Egyptian temples, the pyramids at Gisa, the two famous colossal statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III at Thebes (the Colossi of Memnon), and other ancient sites, some with hieroglyphic inscriptions. While the colour views of these sites as they were ca. 1870 would be of the greatest importance by themselves, the present album provides much more. These are not mere archaeological sites showing dead ruins, but views of living Egypt, with several mosques, merchants and others operating boats and rafts on the Nile, men smoking (both a straight clay pipe and a waterpipe) in a coffee house with children and a cat, four or five tubaned musicians performing while topless women dance, men hauling water at the Nile, a street scene with a camel and fully laden donkeys, a busy street scene in Cairo (also with a man smoking a pipe) and much more, as well as landscapes and riverscapes. Thirty of the original paintings were made by Viennese landscape painter Anna Lynker (1834-post 1909: some sources say 1893), who moved to the Middle East soon after completing her studies in Graz, Karlsruhe and Dusseldorf around 1865 and remained there to at least 1877, painting in watercolours and oils. Some of her paintings were brought back to Europe before she returned herself, so the present set may have been published while she was still there. The other two were painted by Hubert Sattler (1817-1904) from Salzburg, who painted in Egypt in the 1840s and 1850s. The production of the chromolithographs was overseen by the artist Conrad Grefe (1823-1907) for Leopold Sommer (1812-1880), whose firm traded as Leopold Sommer & Comp from 1868 to 1877 or possibly later. The only copy of the present series of prints that we have located is Staatsbibliothek in Munich and contains 30 plates. - Some spotting, a few leaves with marginal restorations, inner hinges reinforced, binding slichtly chafed and the joints slightly cracked, otherwise in very good condition. WorldCat (1 copy, 30 plates only).

Autograph letter signed. Bayreuth, 2. VI. 1875.

1875. Large 8vo. 2 pp. on bifolium. Important letter to the publisher Adolf Fuerstner in Berlin about the publication of the final edition of "Tannhäuser", recorded in Wagner's catalogue of works as "state 4", which since 1876 has remained to this day the most widely used and staged version. Save for a short quotation in a 1977 Stargardt catalogue, this letter is unpublished and therefore especially valuable. Fuerstner had taken over the rights from Meser at Dresden, who had published the first edition in 1845. Now, Wagner sends him the signed contract, announces the finally-revised full score, explains the main changes he has made, and remains in joyful anticipation of receiving the agreed sum of 3,000 Goldmarks. Moreover, he reports that the Russian-born pianist and composer Josef Rubinstein, a friend and ardent admirer of Wagner's, will finish the arrangement of the Venusberg scene within the next few days and send it to Fuerstner. - Rubinstein was famous for excellent pianoforte transcriptions including the "Ring des Nibelungen"; in 1869 he was appointed "Kammerpianist" by Grand Duchess Helena.

Insectivorous Plants. London, John Murray, 1875.

1875. 8vo. X, 462 pp. With woodcut illustrations in text. Contemp. full calf with spine gilt in six compartments, giltstamped green spine label, gilt inner dentelle, leading edges gilt. Marbled endpapers; all edges marbled. First edition. - Presentation copy from the library of the British architect William Cecil Marshall (1849-1921), inscribed to him on the half-title ("From the Author") by a clerk at the publisher's, and with Marshall's autograph ownership above that. Darwin and Marshall had corresponded over insectivorous plants the previous year (cf. Darwin Correspondence Project no. 9627F, letter dated 7 Sept. [1874]). In 1876 Darwin would engage the architect's services to build an extension to Down House on the north side (a billiard room with dressing room and bedroom above). - Extremeties worn; front marbled flyleaf weakened. Still an appealing copy.

The Bosporus and Istanbul. [Istanbul], 1875.

1875. Oil on wood. Signed and dated. Framed (455 x 258 mm). Museum-quality panoramic painting of Istanbul with steamships and sailboats on the Golden Horn and the Hagia Sophia in the background. The foreground is dominated by the Grand Vezier Hüseyin Avni Pasha in a coach, escorted by horsemen, surrounded by a crowd. - The Regensburg-born Heinrich Lang, noted painter of horses and battles as well as writer and illustrator, studied with Karl Steffek in Berlin, Friedrich Voltz and Franz Adam in Munich and Adolf Schreyer in Paris. He travelled to Greece and Turkey and proved himself a careful observer of Ottoman costume and culture. His colourful paintings of Turkish tradesmen, camel drivers, donkey-drawn wagons and splendidly decorated carriages show his great attention to detail and were greeted by contemporaries as a much-welcomed relief from the grey military scenes that had dominated the previous years (cf. ADB Ll, 551).

        Autograph letter signed. [London], 20. I. 1875.

1875. 4to. 1 p. In French, to the Parisian printer Louis Justin Lahure (ca. 1850-1878), who was supposed to be producing the French edition of "Das Kapital" but had lately been trying the author's patience: "Monsieur, Vous recevez aujourd'hui deux paquets contenant p. 982-1033. ("Dear Sir, You receive today two packets containing pp. 982-1033. Only 28 pages, forming the conclusion of the manuscript, are outstanding. There remains the afterword, as well as table of contents and the errata, which I cannot prepare without having before me all the as yet unpublished livraisons. As you do not apparently wish to answer my letters nor send proofs, nor seem desirous so far to make up your mind, I advise you that my time is not absolutely at your disposition [...]"). On the same day, Marx wrote to Max Oppenheim in Prague, describing his preoccupation with the French translation of the "Capital" and noting that he had introduced many changes and additions to the final parts of the French edition. Ten days later, Marx wrote to his publisher Lachâtre in Brussels, announcing his having finally completed the manuscript. He explains once more that he cannot go ahead with the table of contents, errata or afterword without the unpublished fascicles and complains that Lahure has stopped printing altogether three months previously: "He has not even returned the proofs of livraisons 34 and 35, and I am now beleaguered with other work [...] As I do not wish again to write to this gentleman, I would request you to communicate to him your instructions" (cf. MEW 34, p. 120, no. 4). According to the contract with Lachatre, the "Capital" was to appear in 44 livraisons of one print sheet each. In fact, five such instalments were combined into a series, so that the French edition was published between September 1872 and November 1875 as livraisons I through IX. Not in: MEW 34 (Berlin 1966): Briefe Jan. 1875-Dez. 1880.

ANNA KARENINA: FIRST APPEARANCE IN PRINT] Anna Karenina // Russkiy vestnik [Russian Herald]

      - 1875. vol. CXV, nos. 1-4; 1876, vol. CXXI, nos. 1-2, vol. CXXII, nos. 3-4, vol. CXXVI, No 12; 1877, vol. CXXVII, nos. 1-4. 8vo, pp. [243]-336, [1], [742]-817, [2], [246]-316, [1], [572]- 641, [1], [305]-390, [679]-745, [1], [291]-339, [1], [641]-693, [1], [687]-737, [1], [267]-324, [1], [830]-898, [329]-382, [709]- 763, [1]. Any sections of text not from Anna Karenina are covered in old paper. Inkstains to first few leaves, edges guarded, some mild staining and fingermarking in places, some marginal waterstaining towards the end. Contemporary half morocco, re-backed preserving original spine. All parts bound together. Anna Karenina was serialized in Russkiy Vestnik in 1875. This copy was created by a devoted reader who removed all the parts from 13 issues of the journal and bound them in a single volume. Owing to a political disagreement between Tolstoy and the journal's publisher, Mikhail Katkov, over Serbian independence (Katkov and his journal were in favour, and Tolstoy was against) the last part of the story was never printed. A complete edition (with the final part) was published in book form in 1878, but this was the only separate edition (that is, excluding collections and selections) during Tolstoy's lifetime. Rare both as an example of devotion to Tolstoy by an unknown reader and as the first appearance in print of this canonical text. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Autograph letter signed to the editor of the Berliner Börsen Courier, George Davidsohn. An important letter regarding the first performance of portions of Götterdämmerung

Apparently unpublished. Wagner-Briefe-Verzeichnis 7091, location "unknown." The concert in Berlin (actually, there were two, on April 24 and 25, 1875) was part of a series of performances designed to promote the inaugural Bayreuth Festival in 1876. Besides the immolation scene, the program included a "Grosses scenisches Vorspiel" (apparently an orchestral arrangement of the beginning of Götterdämmerung) and the scene of Siegfried's death. Barth, Mack, and Voss, eds., Wagner: A Documentary Study, p. 227, reproducing a broadside announcing a concert in Vienna on March 1, 1875. Amalie Materna (1844-1918) sang Brünnhilde at the inaugural 1876 Bayreuth Festival. Dr. Josef Standthartner (1818-1892) was a neurologist and patron of music in Vienna. "Music director Stern" possibly refers to Julius Stern (1820-1883), founder of the Stern'sches Konservatorium. George Davidsohn (1835-1897) was the editor-in-chief (and intitially, publisher) of the daily newspaper Berliner Börsen Courier.. 2 pp. Octavo. Dated Bayreuth, April 4, 1875. In black ink in Wagner's characteristically dense, elegant hand. In German (with translation). Wagner writes about preparations for an upcoming concert in Berlin featuring excerpts from his (then unperformed) opera Götterdämmerung. He confirms the participation of the Viennese soprano Amalie Materna, gives instructions for the program book, and discusses rehearsal work. The Viennese doctor and patron of music Josef Standhartner and a "music director Stern" in Berlin are mentioned. "Frau Materna has received her leave for leave for the Berlin concert... Her participation is making the full presentation of the concert possible since I would not have attempted the great closing scene [Brünnhilde's immolation] without her. You can now have the exact Vienna program for Berlin announced; I hope that the announcement of Materna as guest artist will have a definitive positive effect... I am greatly concerned about the orchestra this time. Is our friend, Music Director Stern, doing anything about it?"
