Bookplate to all volumes. Pages edges slightly age toned. A superb set. The set comprises all the books, fiction and non fiction, published during Jefferies' lifetime, as well as 2 titles posthumously published, Field and Hedgerow (1889) and The Toilers of the Fields (1892). John) Richard Jefferies (1848-1887) is best known for his prolific and sensitive writing on natural history, rural life and agriculture in late Victorian England. However, a closer examination of his career reveals a many-sided author who was something of an enigma. To some people he is more familiar as the author of the children's classic Bevis or the strange futuristic fantasy After London (the central theme of which is unstoppable nature reclaiming its birthright after the collapse of civilisation), while he also has some reputation as a mystic worthy of serious study. Since his death his books have enjoyed intermittent spells of popularity, but today he is unknown to the greater part of the reading public. Jefferies, however, has been an inspiration to a number of more prominent writers and W.H. Hudson, Edward Thomas, Henry Williamson and John Fowles are among those who have acknowledged their debt to him. In my view his greatest achievement lies in his expression, aesthetically and spiritually, of the human encounter with the natural world - something that became almost an obsession for him in his last years (Simon Coleman).

Two ink drawings, initialed and dated 1875.A pair of two original pen and ink drawings.Image sizes: 6 1/2 x 6 3/8 inches: 165 x 162 mm. Beautifully matted, framed and glazed separately with a cream mat and gray border. (Each frame size: 16 1/2 x 13 1/2 inches; 419 x 343 mm.).This pair of very sweet drawings that are full of emotion are most certainly in the early style of Kate Greenaway. One depicts a young girl and boy in a garden by a water pump and large urn. The boy is holding an apple an the girl is offering him a bite of a pie. The other drawing shows the same girl and boy crying as the large urn has shattered into pieces at their feet. We have been unable to identify the initials but we believe that they were done by a very accomplished mid-Victorian artist.

Journey Across the Western Interior of Australia...

London: Samson, Low, Marston, Low & Searle, 1875. Octavo, frontispiece portrait, eight plates and a large folding map, 30 pp. publisher's advertisements dated February 1875, bookplate; an attractive copy in the original gilt-decorated green cloth. First edition of Warburton's enthralling narrative of his expedition from the Telegraph Line to the west coast, which won the race to cross the continent from east to west.Warburton beat Ernest Giles to the honour, but at a terrible cost. In the harsh Great Sandy Desert his expedition deteriorated into an endless search for water; within a few months half their camels were dead; provisions were low and much of their equipment had been lost; they could only travel by night in the intense summer heat. Warburton was blinded in one eye and so weak that he had to be carried prone on his camel. They reached the Oakover River just in time but even here they faced starvation and had to eat stewed camel hide while waiting for relief to arrive. As a result of the extreme hardship and malnutrition that he experienced, Warburton was unable to prepare his journals for publication. The scientific results were edited and arranged by eminent naturalists of the day, including Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker and John Gould, while the text of Warburton's journals was edited into a narrative by H.W. Bates of the Royal Geographical Society.

London, Revised and Corrected to the Present Time by E. Walford, M.A.

London: Virtue and Company, circa, 1875. Three thick quarto volumes, engraved vignettes, full page plates, page-edges gilt; in contemporary red morocco gilt, flat spines elaborately gilt, cloth boards marked. Beautifully illustrated collection of essays on the history of London bound in ornate handsome contemporary gilt decorated red morocco. In addition to hundreds of charming engraved vignettes the set includes a large number of fine and beautifully composed steel engraved plates specially commissioned for the work.Charles Knight (1791-1873) was one of the most prolific and industrious English publishers of the nineteenth-century. The magisterial six volume London remains one of his most ambitious projects, rivalling the scale and complexity of his widely acclaimed English Cyclopaedia. Knight was the son of a printer who went on to study journalism after completing training with his father. This combination of writing finesse and publishing canniness allowed Knight to publish engaging and learned works for a popular audience in attractive editions at modest prices.London in six volumes is a comprehensive series of articles on the history of the city, incorporating a wide range of themes. A small selection of the articles include: relics at the East India House, old London booksellers, gardens of the Zoological society, surgical hospitals and lunatic asylums in the past, history of Jewish inhabitants of the city, the Royal Exchange and the South Sea House, famous Astrologers and the Royal Observatory, the Foundling hospital and very much more. Very good.

The South America Pilot Part II. Comprising Magellan Strait, Tierra del Fuego, and West Coast of South America.

London: printed by the Hydrographic Office and sold by J.D. Potter, 1875. Large octavo, two plates of maps; untrimmed in the original faded green linen boards, title in gilt to front board and spine. An important and very rare pilot, comprising the detailed surveys of South America undertaken by King and Fitzroy on the Adventure and Beagle. This is the seventh edition, updated, but still substantially the work of King and Fitzroy: any edition of this work is now of some rarity because of both the heavy use to which copies were subjected, as well as the standard rules regarding Hydrographic Office printing. In command of the Adventure was Phillip Parker King, the Australian-born son of the third governor Philip Gidley King, who became the British navy's leading hydrographer and was one of the first native-born Australians to reach world stature: King completed the Australian coastal exploration begun by Flinders, and then commanded the Adventure on her South American survey in company with the Beagle. The surveys which resulted in this work were supervised by Phillip Parker King whose Sailing Directions for the Coasts of Eastern and Western Patagonia, now a very rare book, was published by the Hydrographic Office in 1832.The present work borrows from the Sailing Directions, but appears to have been first issued in the present form by the Hydrographic Office in 1850 (with the title Sailing Directions for South America, Part 2). The work was revised for the fifth edition of 1860 by Thomas A. Hull RN, who chiefly added new directions rather than particularly revising the work of King and Fitzroy. Reflecting the way in which the work was intended to be used by mariners, the two pages of maps are included as an "index to Admiralty charts alluded to in this work."As a result, this is one of the rarest of any works relating to either King or the Beagle voyage. No copy appears to be recorded in any Australian collection, and the sum total of any of the editions in international collections could be counted on the fingers of less than two hands. Attractively, this copy has pencil notes confirming that it was once owned by Captain L.D. Smith of Chatham Massachusetts. Smith was the captain of the Bark Moro Castle, and he has signed the front endpaper and dated it 15 November 1883. According to the 1889 List of Merchant Vessels of the US, the bark Moro Castle was built in 1869 in Mystic Connecticut, and its home port was Boston. The board stained and a bit water-marked, but a very good copy.

        The History of Japan.

Second edition revised. London. King. 1875. 2 volumes. Volume I: 1853 to 1864 with a Sketch of Earlier Periods. Attractive folding plan of Kioto frontispiece, folding plan The Emperor's Palace at Kioto, folding black and white map of Japan at rear. Short repaired tear in border of both plans not affecting image. Volume II: Folding map of Japan frontis somewhat carelessly folded, with a short closed tear along one fold, full page plan library stamped. xiv356pp. Both volumes bound in worn, but still sound, half goat binding. Marbled endpapers, neat 19th century Inner Temple Library bookplate front pastedowns, small rather attractive stamps on prelims and occasionally in text. Gilt library insignia at foot of spine of each volume. Text is very clean and sound. A good ex-library set. These two volumes cover Japanese history from its earliest times to 1871, but the strength of the work is the detailed account it gives of Japanese affairs and Japan's relations with the West between 1853 - 1871. The earlier history is covered briefly in 100 pages and provides the context only for the majority of the work which covers this most fascinating of times when the Edo period was giving way to the Meiji.         Chowbokiana or Notes about the Antipodes and the Antipodeans.

[Bombay]: 1875. Octavo, 100 pp., New York Public Library stamp on verso of title-page, preserved in solander box of half green morocco, marbled paper boards. Rare: although often quite whimsical in tone, this work is in fact an empassioned plea to protect the Maori from the worst excesses of European settlement, and includes important comments on the wars: 'So much nonsense has been written of late about the land of the Maori by interested persons... that the writer ventures to offer these notes, in the hope that they may contains scraps of information useful to those who ought not to go there... 'Thomas Cockburn-Hood (1820-1889), was one of Australia's early settlers, the first to take up the Peak Downs run, upon which the town of Rockhampton now stands. In his lengthy antipodean career he was appointed to both the New South Wales and Queensland Legislative Councils, and became a member of the Philosophy Society and a Fellow of the Geology Society of London. He spent some years in Canterbury, New Zealand where he took a deep interest in fossil remains. Cockburn-Hood died on 15 January 1889 in Edinburgh, Scotland (see Obituary in Journal of the Geological Society London, vol. 46, 1890).With notes derived from any number of visitors to New Zealand, among whom the negative remarks made by Charles Darwin on the Beagle come in for especially critical comment, this work is, as Bagnall notes, 'a lengthy tirade against New Zealand, the social customs and pretensions of its European inhabitants with strong criticism of the reporting of incidents in the Taranaki campaigns.' The work is divided into three sections, on 'The Pakeha' (non-Maori settlers), 'The Maori and Anecdotes of the War', and a brief section on 'New Zealand its Attractions and Drawbacks'.The "Chowbok" of the title was a minor character in Samuel Butler's Erewhon, a Maori chief with a taste for drink who nonetheless manages to outwit the narrator at every turn, becoming a bishop in London by the end of the book despite having never relinquished his original spiritual beliefs (see Roger Robinson, 'Samuel Butler, 1835-1902,' NZETC online).         OUR BARREN LANDS. THE INTERIOR OF THE UNITED STATES WEST OF THE 100th MERIDIAN, AND EAST OF THE SIERRA NEVADAS

Cincinnati, 1875. 53pp. Contemporary blue cloth. Spine slightly faded. Ink stamp on front fly leaf, several library ink stamps in margins. Else very good. Hazen served as an army officer in the trans-Mississippi west after the Civil War. He was convinced the land west of the 100th meridian was effectively useless for agriculture and wrote letters to New York papers to that effect. General George Custer wrote refuting this, and claiming the lands were fertile. Herein Hazen angrily rebuts Custer, accusing him of "personal interest," and marshals considerable data to support his assertions that the Far West is too arid to support agriculture. "Hazen, who had as much experience as Custer on the frontier and was more academically minded, was in this instance caught rather far out on a limb. His pronouncements about wintering cattle on the plains and other difficulties to be expected in settling the West proved to be wrong" - Decker. "Contains considerable data on the actual explorations and experiences of the contestants in the region" - Eberstadt. An important and rare pamphlet. GRAFF 1834. HOWES H372, "aa." LUTHER 31.         The Science of Modern Cotton Spinning: embracing mill architecture; machinery for cotton ginning, opening . preparing and spinning, with all the latest improvements; also articles on steam and water power . gearing and American system of belting compared . boiler explosions, &c; .

      - Manchester, Palmer & Howe &c 1875. Two volumes largish quarto publisher's gilt decorated cloth (spines faded and rubbed); viii,152,[8] & x,153-320pp and 41 plates, plans, elevations and measured drawings (one chromolitho and several double page), illustrations through the text. Inner front hinge of volume one strengthened with paper (neat enough); the rubbed spines are a bit of a puzzle because the contents show few signs of ever being used. A rather good set. Third edition, it was first issued in parts in 1871-72 and two more editions followed this; all seem unchanged. A handsome and authoritive work. Leigh was by this time a grand old man of engineering and invention with 'almost half a century's personal experience'. He uses the recent India Mill at Darwen designed by Ernest Bates (the 300 foot chimney though comes straight from Rawlinson) as an example of a 'first class type' and one of the 'noblest specimens of mill architecture'.

A Clan Campbell family photograph album illustrated with finely drawn pen and ink illustrations

Argyllshire, Scotland, 1875. Album. Very good. This 8" x8" photograph album contains 56 photographs ranging in size from 2" x 2.5" to 4" x 5.5", each affixed to a single page. 28 of the photographs are identified on their pages. 42 of the pages contain finely drawn pen and ink sketches, presumably related to interests or careers of the subject. Three of the illustrations are multi-color. Three other pages have pencil illustrations that had not yet been finished in ink. All edges gilt. The photos are in nice shape; some have been trimmed. The pages are generally clean but have some finger-smudging at the top and bottom margins. The album has a slight bow and edge-wear. Clan Campbell has been one of the largest and most powerful of the Scottish Highland clans. Their lands were in Argyll, and the chief of the clan became the Earl and later Duke of Argyll. From 1450 until the early 1900s, members of Clan Campbell played leading roles in the government and military of Scotland and Great Britain. Today the family is still influential, but primarily in commercial, cultural and charitable roles. The hand drawn illustrations that frame the photographs in this album are extraordinary well done. The first features a drawing of the family's Memorial Cross erected in memory of the MacNeill Campbells of Melfort in 1873. Other illustrations feature highland scenery, sailing and maritime scenes, estates, plants and flowers, shells, an artist's palette, an African scene, hunting, dogs and horses, waterfalls, music, etc. Information about a number of the family members in this album can be found in A Memorial history of the Campbells of Melfort, Argyllshire which includes records of the different highland and other families with whom they have intermarried by Margaret Olympia Campbell, London: Simmons & Botten, 1882.

Papyros Ebers.

- Already in the papyrus itself the pages XXVIII and XXIX are not numbered. There is, however, no text omitted. - Printed in France by Folio Imprimerie Cooperative, Saint-Julien-du-Sault. Epiphi (9. Ipip) im 9. Regierungsjahr des Amenophis I. vermerkt." ARCTIC CIRCLE / NORTH POLE: MAP OF THE COUNTRIES ROUND THE NORTH POLE.

London 1875 - Chromolithograph, dissected into 24 sections and laid upon original linen, folding into original blue cloth covers with yellow printed pastedown label and advertisement sheets pasted to inside cover (Very Good, some minor old areas of creasing to the lower right of the North Pole, some small tack marks to corners and some areas of minor toning and discolouration; cover with shelf-ware and spine a little frayed, but overall still very attractive), 67.5 x 69.5 cm (26.5 x 27.5 inches). The scarce first edition of Edward Stanford’s excellent map of the Arctic Circle – from what was by far the most authoritative and influential map series of the region to be made during the great age of Polar exploration. This excellent production is the first edition of Edward Stanford’s map series of the Arctic Circle, the most authoritative and influential general map to issued during the great age of exploration in the Northern Polar regions. The map is centred on the North Pole and embraces all of the Northern Hemisphere as far down south as 50° North. The geography of the known lands is very precisely delineated, while the high polar regions not yet encountered (such as Northern Greenland, much of Canada’s Arctic Archipelago and the extremities of certain Russian Arctic Islands) is shown to remain an enigma, part of the enormous ‘Unexplored Polar Region’. Each nation is distinguished in its own attractive colour, and the treeline is shown running across North America. As noted in the inscription in the lower right corner, the dark blue seas are free of ice, while the seas coloured light blue seas usually feature pack ice, while the hard white areas represent permanent ice sheets and glaciers. Through the 19th Century and the early 20th Century, the exploration of the Arctic regions was seen not only as the last frontier in exploration, but the ultimate ‘extreme sport’. Over this period the focus gradually shifted from the 400-year old economic dream of finding the supposed ‘Northwest’ and ‘Northeast’ Passages, towards the more idealistic goal of reaching the actual North Pole itself. The distances through the Arctic’s icy waters and lands were so vast, and the conditions were so severe that expeditions were often literally frozen and crushed, ensuring that many of the explorers never made it home. Even surviving the Arctic, let along making important discoveries, was a great badge of pride for European and American naval officers, noblemen and scientific societies, and a multinational race ensued to see who could become the first to reach the North Pole (or, at least, make it to the northernmost point attained) – with both personal and national honour at stake.         MARK TWAIN'S SKETCHES, New and Old

1875. Now First Published in Complete Form. Sold only by Subscription. Hartford, Conn., and Chicago, Ill.: The American Publishing Company, 1875. Original blue cloth decorated in black and gilt, all page edges gilt. First Edition, first issue, of this collection of amusing sketches. A curiosity of this first edition is that (on all copies) the title on the spine is reversed, SKETCHES OLD AND NEW. These sketches are quite "early Twain"; his next literary attempt, bound similarly, would be THE ADVENTURES OF TOM SAWYER (1876).~The first issue, as here, includes "From 'Hospital Days'" on p. 299, and has the p. 119 footnote inadvertently repeated on p. 120. "From 'Hospital Days'" was discovered, too late for the first copies, not to have been written by Twain after all (it was by Jane Stuart Woolsey); this copy includes the erratum slip tipped in at that spot, so advising the reader.~This copy is a standard copy with plain page edges (a small number had gilt edges, an option for which the original subscriber would have paid extra); it is a bright, very good copy (light wear at the spine ends, front endpaper cracked only at the top, a couple of marginal stains on the first few leaves). In our experience the first issue is scarcer than the second, and has become quite uncommon in highly-desirable condition. Housed in a cloth slipcase with leather label. McBride p. 35 (citing seven second issue copies but only two first issue ones); Blanck 3364. Provenance: small leather "Blairhame" bookplate of Mrs. J. Insley Blair.
