Exploration of the Colorado River of the West and its Tributaries

Washington, D.C.: Government Printing Office. Good with no dust jacket. 1875. First Edition. Hardcover. Modern 3/4 dark green calf over original boards. Report to Congress from the Powell expeditions on the Green and Colorado Rivers. Green pebbled boards with blind ruling on front and back. Collated complete with scarce map and profile present in rear pocket and are in very good condition. Edges are rubbed, surface blemishes to boards. Has been recently re-backed and stabilized. Several pages were loose when we acquired this volume and show chipping to the edges; they are now tipped in. The Ioose pages likely were used in research by Wallace Stegner as noted below. Interior is free of markings. Wallace Stegner's name and address are on the first edpaper; also ex-library copy. This copy was used by Wallace Stegner in his research for "Beyond the Hundredth Meridian". No notes or marginalia noted. "Beyond the Hundredth Meridian" was unlike any of Stegner's previous works, requiring research spanning 5 years. Stegner often consulted with his mentor Bernard DeVoto during the writing. At one point Stegner writes to DeVoto, "I really am scared to death to let anybody see this, for some reason. Maybe I know the thing stinks." The writing of Hundredth Meridian would solidify Stegner's growing environmentalism and the book remains a classic of the history of the west. Book was acquired directly from the Stegner family. Powell's mostly definitive record of his exploration of the Green and Colorado Rivers; curiously, he ignores almost entirely his second expedition 1871-1872, and chose to re-write the report and publish "Canyons of the Colorado: " in 1895. Farquhar 42A. ; Book; 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall; 291 pp .

A Clan Campbell family photograph album illustrated with finely drawn pen and ink illustrations

Argyllshire, Scotland, 1875. Album. Very good. This 8" x8" photograph album contains 56 photographs ranging in size from 2" x 2.5" to 4" x 5.5", each affixed to a single page. 28 of the photographs are identified on their pages. 42 of the pages contain finely drawn pen and ink sketches, presumably related to interests or careers of the subject. Three of the illustrations are multi-color. Three other pages have pencil illustrations that had not yet been finished in ink. All edges gilt. The photos are in nice shape; some have been trimmed. The pages are generally clean but have some finger-smudging at the top and bottom margins. The album has a slight bow and edge-wear. Clan Campbell has been one of the largest and most powerful of the Scottish Highland clans. Their lands were in Argyll, and the chief of the clan became the Earl and later Duke of Argyll. From 1450 until the early 1900s, members of Clan Campbell played leading roles in the government and military of Scotland and Great Britain. Today the family is still influential, but primarily in commercial, cultural and charitable roles. The hand drawn illustrations that frame the photographs in this album are extraordinary well done. The first features a drawing of the family's Memorial Cross erected in memory of the MacNeill Campbells of Melfort in 1873. Other illustrations feature highland scenery, sailing and maritime scenes, estates, plants and flowers, shells, an artist's palette, an African scene, hunting, dogs and horses, waterfalls, music, etc. Information about a number of the family members in this album can be found in A Memorial history of the Campbells of Melfort, Argyllshire which includes records of the different highland and other families with whom they have intermarried by Margaret Olympia Campbell, London: Simmons & Botten, 1882.

Nauka o pochodzeniu gatunków i darwinizm. [i.e. "Descendenzlehre und Darwinismus" / "The doctrine of descent and Darwinism"].

Warszawa, Spo´lki Wydawniczej Ksiegarzy, 1875. 8vo. In contemporary half calf with three raised bands. Spine with a bit of wear, internally with light occassional brownspots. (4), 368 pp. The rare first Polish translation of Oscar Schmidt's seminal "Descendenzlehre und Darwinismus" which was the first work to introduce Poland to Darwin and essentially was the most important work, even after the first full Polish translation published in 1884, in the speading of Darwinism and his evolutionary thought. An attempt to publish a Polish translation of 'Origin of Species' was made as early as 1873. This was, however, never completed and only half of the work was published (Freeman 739), thus making the present work the first to give a full account of 'Origin of Species' in Polish. As seen in several other countries (especially in Japan) the majority of Polish intellectuals adopted a Social Darwinism perspective at a very early stage, rather than appreciating the English naturalist's caution in applying his ideas to human society."Before the first translations of Darwin's appeared [...], many Polish intellectuals, such as positivist writer Eliza Orzeszkowa (1841-1910) complained about the increasing confusion over the essence of the English naturalist's ideas, which had all too often been mixed up with all sorts of ideological debates. However, when Darwin's books were actually available in Polish translations, the novelty of his concepts gradually wore off, making room for more serious attempts to come to terms with evolutionary theory." (Glick, The Reception of Charles Darwin in Europe). "It appears that the struggle for or against Darwinism in partitioned Poland prefigured a pattern that is relevant for Polish thinking up to the present day: the conflict of striving for progress with the help of powerful allies abroad and of virulently rejecting all foreign advice for fear of losing one's cultural identity." (Ibid.).Eduard Oscar Schmidt (1823 - 1886) was a German zoologist and phycologist and an early proponent of Darwinian evolutionary thought. He published extensively on the subject, the present work being his most popular and influential.

John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1875 - 1875 Original Wisden Rebound without wrappers Near Fine Cond

1875. As far as I am aware this is the first time that an 1875 Wisden has been offered for sale on Wisden Auction. The book has been very recently rebound in green cloth with a green leather spine and the title and year in gilt to the spine. The front and rear end papers are marbled and the binding looks fabulous. The book itself has been rebound without the original wrappers. The book consists of 212 pages and is in fabulous condition. The pages are clean and unmarked and there is no hint of any foxing. A super book in a superb binding and of course the holy grail for Wisden collectors. I have added plenty of photographs but am happy to answer any queries or questions. The book will be fully insured in transit and packed to a professional standard.

A pair of two original pen and ink drawings. Image sizes: 6 1/2 x 6 3/8 inches: 165 x 162 mm. Beautifully matted, framed and glazed separately with a cream mat and gray border. (Each frame size: 16 1/2 x 13 1/2 inches; 419 x 343 mm.). This pair of very sweet drawings that are full of emotion are most certainly in the early style of Kate Greenaway. One depicts a young girl and boy in a garden by a water pump and large urn. The boy is holding an apple an the girl is offering him a bite of a pie. The other drawing shows the same girl and boy crying as the large urn has shattered into pieces at their feet. We have been unable to identify the initials but we believe that they were done by a very accomplished mid-Victorian artist.

The Elite Private Address and Carriage Directory and ladies' Visiting and Shopping Guide to New York City, Containing the Names of the Upper Classes of Society Arranged in Street Form and ... Business Houses..Price Six Dollars

New York: Phillips, Andrade & Co, 1875. 12mo. 268p. After the success of the 1874 edition which had 218 pages, the size expanded and now has full page ads in the back for Steinway Pianos as well as the more prestigious carriage companies in an era before the automobile. At a price of $6.00, this could only be afforded by the very well off and was essential for the wealthy to know exactly where their friends (and potential rivals lived). Whether it is John Jacob Astor, whose wife dictated who would be admitted to the "400" (the Vanderbilt's were excluded since they were represented by the nouveau riche). Their magnificent mansion built at 660 Fifth Avenue (still a vacant space according to this directory) became a magnet of so many rich and famous that eventually Mrs. Astor was forced to accept them into their elite society. These books were kept by the great families and were indispensable for the social elite. One of the essential guides for a study of New York Upper Classes in the 1870's. (Later editions such as the 1877 showed more of the middle classes and by the last edition in 1891 virtually anyone with the smallest piece of property was included). Original cloth binding with all edges gilt, gilt stamping on cover and spine "Elite Directory". A very good copy with light edge wear.

Reich illustrierter Sammelband zur Gründung des Malteser Sanitätsdienstes in Österreich.

Wien, Seidel, 1875-1879. 25 x 16 cm. [Catlin's North American Indian Portfolio. Hunting Scenes and Amusements of the Rocky Mountains and Prairies of America. From Drawings and Notes of the Author, made during Eight Years' Travel amongst Forty-Eight of the Wildest and most Remote Tribes of Savages in North America]

[London: Chatto & Windus, 1875. Large folio. (23 3/8 x 17 inches). 31 tinted lithographs after Catlin and McGahey. Without title or list of plates, found in few copies. Contemporary dark blue morocco backed marbled paper covered boards, morocco lettering piece on the upper cover, spine lettered in gilt (expert repairs to joints)The Indian Portfolio in the rare 31-plate tinted issue. This issue of Catlin's famous work on American Indians includes the rare six unnumbered lithographs, comprising two portraits, a group portrait of Ojibways, two tribal dance scenes, and a hunting scene. These six plates were evidently executed on lithographic stones in 1844 when Catlin envisioned a whole series of "Indian "Portfolios," but were not printed and issued until Chatto & Windus acquired Henry Bohn's stock of, and copyright for, Catlin's North American Indian Portfolio in 1871. This copy does not have any title or text leaves, as usual for this issue.Catlin's North American Indian Portfolio contains the results of his years of painting, living with and travelling amongst the Great Plains Indians. In a famous passage, Catlin describes how the sight of several Indian chiefs in Philadelphia led to his resolution to record their vanishing way of life: "the history and customs of such a people, preserved by pictorial illustrations, are themes worthy of the lifetime of one man, and nothing short of the loss of my life shall prevent me from visiting their country and becoming their historian." From 1832 to 1837 he spent the summer months sketching the western tribes, finishing his pictures in oils during the winter. He painted around 600 highly realistic and powerfully projected portraits of Indians, carefully recording their costume, culture and way of life. Catlin then exhibited his Indian Gallery in London beginning in 1841.Encouraged by his warm reception, he planned a series of four portfolios, with a total of 100 plates, to illustrate Indian life. By the time the first Indian Portfolio appeared in late 1844, Catlin had desperately overstrained his budget, and was forced to sell the entire project, lithographic stones and all, to the preeminent English publisher of color plate books, Henry Bohn.Research by William Reese has demonstrated that Henry Bohn issued the Indian Portfolio in several variant versions while he controlled the copyright, from 1845 until his retirement in the late 1860s. In 1871 he sold the copyright and working materials for a number of his books to the firm of Chatto & Windus. According to the surviving Chatto & Windus records, they acquired the original lithographic stones made in 1844, including an additional six, never printed, which must have been prepared for Catlin's next projected Indian Portfolio. Thus, the extra six plates only appear here. The thirty-one-plate issue is far rarer than any of the twenty-five-plate issues, by a ratio of about four to one. Reese located fifteen other copies of this issue (out of 165 copies in his census on copies of the Indian Portfolio). The plates are as follow:1) "North American Indians."2) "Buffalo Bull Grazing."3) "Wild Horses, at Play."4) "Catching the Wild Horse."5) "Buffalo Hunt, Chase."6) "Buffalo Hunt, Chase."7) "Buffalo Hunt, Chase."8) "Buffalo Dance."9) "Buffalo Hunt, Surround."10) "Buffalo Hunt, White Wolves attacking a Buffalo Bull."11) "Buffalo Hunt, Approaching a Ravine."12) "Buffalo Hunt, Chasing Back."13) "Buffalo Hunt, Under the White Wolf Skin."14) "Snow Shoe Dance."15) "Buffalo Hunt, on Snow Shoes."16) "Wounded Buffalo Bull."17) "Dying Buffalo Bull, in Snow Drift."18) "The Bear Dance."19) "Attacking the Grizzly Bear."20) "Antelope Shooting."21) "Ball Players."22) "Ball-Play Dance."23) "Ball Play."24) "Archery of the Mandans."25) "Wi-Jun-Jon an Assiniboine Chief."[unnumbered] "Joc-O-Sot, the Walking Bear."[unnumbered] "Mah-To-Toh-Pah, The Mandan Chief."[unnumbered] "O-Jib-Be-Ways."[unnumbered] "Buffaloe Hunting."[unnumbered] "The War Dance."[unnumbered] "The Scalp Dance."Wagner-Camp 105a; Howes C243; Field 258; Abbey Travel 653 (ref); McCracken 10; William S.
