Gute Expl. Am bekanntesten ist Spencer durch das Konzept "survival of the fittest" geworden, welches er in seinem Buch "Principles of Biology" (1864) beschrieb, nachdem er Darwins "On the Origin of Species" gelesen hatte. Kurz vor seinem Tod wurde er für den Literaturnobelpreis vorgeschlagen (1902). Er war mit einer der einflußreichsten Philosphen im England des 19. Jahrhunderts. (Zitat)

        Album] Romances et Chansons

1875-6 1875 - Oblong, 28 by 19 cm. Unpaginated, 57 leaves, or 114 pp. with vignettes and larger illustrations, in ink and/or watercolored, on most pages, and with some lyrics written out in a neat calligraphic cursive hand also on most pages. The illustrations would appear to be all by one hand. While the many human figures depicted among them can have an awkwardness in their execution typical of the amateur effort, even these never lack for charm, and most of the other illustrations and ornamentation are pulled off with real brio. The artwork very much speaks to its period of the 1870s in dress and elements of taste. Overall, the album is quite extraordinary in its tight conception, scale and indeed, realization. One of the watercolors is signed Feraud, from which one can infer that a Feraud put together the entire album. Inner hinges cracked. Rubbing and wear to leather binding, and surface loss of paper pastedown to slipcase. Full Morocco, Slipcase with Paper Pastedown

        Shakespeare's Library

London - Reeves and Turner 1875 - A scarce edition ofShakespeare's Library edited by William Hazlitt. Rebacked in cloth with the original paper-covered boards. Volumes I - VI, complete. This is aset of the plays, romances, and poems that inspired the works of Shakespeare. William Shakespeare, d. 1616, was an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright. William Hazlitt, 1778 1830, was an English writer, remembered for his humanistic essays and literary criticism, and as a grammarian and philosopher. He is now considered one of the great critics and essayists of the English language, placed in the company of Samuel Johnson and George Orwell. During his lifetime he befriended many people who are now part of the 19th-century literary canon, including Charles and Mary Lamb, Stendhal, Samuel Taylor Coleridge and William Wordsworth. Condition: The bindings are tight and firm. There is some mildwear to the extremities, including some mild bumping. Internally the pages are generally clean with slight browning to the page edges. There is a small closed tear to the front free-endpaper of volume 4. Overall thecondition is very good. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

New York, n.d.. Ca. 1875. 12 x 8-1/2 inches, in an archival mat. Pen and ink on paper, with Chinese white. Fine . A very pleasing design by Will, advertising his studio school at Broadway and Astor Place, where he taught drawing and painting, as well as executing commissions for Harper's, Scribner's, The Century and other magazines, and books. He was a painter in oil and watercolor, and an illustrator and draftsman, although his first work to be exhibited at the National Academy, in 1858, were four crayon portraits.         Adventures of Tom Sawyer

American Publishing Company 1875 - First Edition, with mixed points. This scarce book has the first edition points of 1875 printed on the copyright page, and 1876 on the title page. Later editions have a later year such as 1879. The binding is exceptionally nice, with minor wear to the spine ends and corners. Besides light wear to the panels, this copy is rich in colors. The pages are in good shape with the exception of the first five pages starting with the title page that have a tear to the right of the page. However, it doesn't effect any of the text, and for a book over 100 years old, it's hard to find a perfect copy. Besides some light soiling to a few other pages, the pages are in good shape. Overall, an attractive copy in collector's condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        The Way We Live Now

London: Chapman and Hall, 1875. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. A Very Good copy of the first edition, first printing, bound in 3/4 blue leather with coordinated blue cloth, top edge of the closed page blocks gilded (board edges, spine tails, and board corners modestly rubbed, some rubbing to the spine heads with some tiny splits where the spine heads meet the board edges); a wonderful novel which proved Trollope's continuing power as a novelist amid talk that his powers were waning. The book tells the story of the rise and fall of the fictional stock market manipulator, Augustus Melmotte -- and its effect on his daughter's options for marriage. The tale is an excellent social satire which Walpole deemed to be one of the most remarkable of all English novels published between 1860 and 1890. The story remains vibrant and has currency even today. A Very Good copy.

THE CACTUS HUMANUS, METHODICALLY, VIZ.; INDUCTIVELY & DEDUCTIVELY, TREATED, ANALYZED, & ILLUSTRATED, BY ALBIGRAECUS CACATUS PEDO, TRANSLATED FROM THE LATIN MS., FREELY ANNOTATED, & PROVIDED WITH AN ORIGINAL INTRODUCTION AND APPENDIX, BY BEAUMONT & FLETCHER

np, [Reading, PA] 1875 - Original manuscript of 42 leaves, plus two hand-drawn plates. In contemporary composition book of sheep-backed marbled (tourniquet) boards; inked in a fine though unusual hand on blue-lined, chain-laid paper with calligraphic title and dedication pages. Leather spine perished; boards detached; several leaves separated from the text block; old soil and staining to dedication leaf. Else apparently complete; fair to good only, but fresh and fully legible condition. An eccentric piece of 19th-century scholarly humor, the more remarkable for being the product of a small, provincial American city. The author, using the pseudonym of "Beaumont & Fletcher," purports to present a scholarly translation of a medieval Latin MS by one "Albigraecus Cacatus Pedo" (which loosely translates as "Dog Turd - Shit Foot") on the many shapes, varieties, and life-histories of the "Cactus Humanus," the author’s euphemism for the singular unit of human excretion, or, if one prefers.the turd. Using the language and format of nineteenth-century scholarly botanical treatises (with which he is clearly familiar), the author delineates the taxonomy of various "Cactus" species, including sub-species and local variations. Throughout, the text is peppered with multilingual puns (Horace: " "Exegi monumentum aere perennius"); broad double-entendres ("Full many a flower is born to blush unseen, and waste its sweetness on the desert air"); and pseudo-scholarly references to imaginary works by both real and non-existent authors. A detailed and fully-realized parody, some 7500 words in length, accompanied by two finely rendered plates of figures (laid in) – the first keyed to passages in the text; the second a "pictorial history of the development of conservatories" (i.e., "privies" - above left). A work of Swiftian brilliance with a heaping measure of Sterne thrown in, a hilariously modern (or even postmodern) piece of Merdiana. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Queen Mary: A Drama.

London: Henry S. King, 1875. - An interesting association copy of the first title in Tennyson's historical trilogy (Harold and Becket were the two subsequent titles): on the front free paste-down is the book plate of Sir Henry Irving, who produced and performed in the first production of Queen Mary at his Lyceum Theatre in April 1876. On the half-title is Tennyson's bold signature "A. Tennyson," below which in Ellen Terry's hand is "From her loving / Ellen Terry," and below that in Irving's hand is "Her old friend / Henry Irving." Though it is difficult to ascertain with certainty what took place here, it is probable that this was given by Tennyson to Irving, who later gave it, together with close friend Ellen Terry, to another unidentified female friend. 8vo, contemporary red morocco, elaborately gilt decorated, a.e.g. NCBEL III, 415.         Scottish Football Association Annual 1875-76

A small preface by WM Dick, the honorary secretary notes that publication of the volume was only decided on a week before it went to print, nevertheless it contains a fair selection of information, including the laws of the game, a paean to football and the benefits of physical education as opposed to the fashion "in some circles, to affect a contempt for anything in the form of physical exercise, and to glory in quoting mystic verse from Tennyson". Also the constitution of the Association, club competition cup results from the prior year and a list of fixtures for the following one. A list of the clubs in the association with addresses and a list of the principle players of the association. 1st edition. 12mo. 50pp. plus 8 blanks pages for memoranda of matches and 6 pages of adverts to rear. Internally very good. Clean and bright, occasional very light handling marks and light edgewear to some leaves. One page of the notes filled out in pencil and the previous owners name entered in neat ink, dated 1875 to the title page. Maroon cloth over green card, the front with gilt embossed title and crest. Covers a touch grubby and with slight edgewear and bumping to corners. The rear portion has some small water damaged portions that affect the adverts only of the rear of the text block and the rear cover has been creased but entirely intact. From Asyut in December 1873 Rohlfs followed the caravan route to the Farafra Oasis, then the next year proceeded to the oasis of Dakhla. From there he struck south-southwest into the sand desert for about 150 kilometers, turned north-northwest and after an epic crossing of the Great sand sea, which he was the first European to penetrate, arrived back at the Siwa oasis. Returning to Dakhla by a safer and more easterly route, he passed through the oasis of El Kharga to reach the Nile at Esneh in April 1874" (Howgego, Continental Exploration 1850-1940, R28).         Rallicula Forbesi (Forbe's Rail)

London 1875 - John Gould (1804-1881) was an English ornithologist, self-taught artist and naturalist. Gould first worked as a gardener under his father in the Royal Gardens of Windsor, from 1818-1824, where he began his illustrations. He became and expert taxidermist, opening his own practice in London in 1824 and in 1827 he became the first Curator and Preserver at the museum of the Zoological Society of London. Through his work he was about to meet with the country’s leading naturalists and view new collections of birds given to the Zoological Society. His interest in birds was continually developing and in 1830 he published his first volume on birds, “A Century of Birds From the Himalaya Mountains.” For the next fifty years, Gould, his wife and artists working with them traveled around Asia, the East Indies and Australia. While is Papua New Guinea, he decided to embark on a final folio as a complement to his unprecedented Birds of Asia. The Birds of New Guinea was Gould's last full-scale work, left incomplete on his death in 1881. Gould completed twelve of the twenty-five parts, and the task of finishing the project fell to Richard Bowdler Sharpe, a superbly qualified successor, who had been Gould's colleague, assistant and friend. One of Gould's most exotic works, the five magnificent volumes of the Birds of New Guinea contain an extensive series of beautiful images of birds of paradise, bower birds, parrots, parakeets, cockatoos, kingfishers and hawk-owls. All of the 320 images are extraordinary for their color and artistry, interesting backdrops and animated compositions. Gould and Sharpe created some of their most engaging and active scenes of bird life in the Birds of New Guinea, and the great popular reception of the work was such that it was one of their only productions that led to a sequel, Sharp's Birds of Paradise (1891-98). Missing from that later production, however, was the almost overwhelming variety of species of the Birds of New Guinea, which, like the Birds of Asia, was the most comprehensive chronicle of the island's ornithology ever issued. This folio size, hand-colored lithograph, Rallicula Forbesi measures 14.75" x 21.5" and is in mint condition. More commonly known as Forbes's Rail, these birds are expertly colored and finely detailed. The fine lines creating the patterns of feathers give the birds added dimension. Their coloring, a burnt orange, is further emphasized with black and white detailing. As they rest on the waters edge, one bird looks questioningly at a small bug, crawling along the underside of a leaf.

Gute Expl. Am bekanntesten ist Spencer durch das Konzept "survival of the fittest" geworden, welches er in seinem Buch "Principles of Biology" (1864) beschrieb, nachdem er Darwins "On the Origin of Species" gelesen hatte. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
